RAHHHH HER WRITING IS SO FUCKING GOOD AS ALWAYS... Cherrystar and Hopethistle still make me so emotional

"Cherrykit? Cherrykit, are you awake?”
Cherrykit blearily opened her eyes, her mind still feeling fuzzy at the edges. “Hopekit?”
“Yeah. Did I wake you?”
“Mhm.” Cherrykit yawned, sending a glance in Hailcrash’s direction. The queen was snoring softly, nose twitching as she slumbered. “What is it?”
“I was just thinking,” Hopekit whispered, brows furrowed. “Will we always be best friends?”
“Did you have another bad dream?” Cherrykit frowned, pressing her head against Hopekit’s shoulder. “Of course we’ll always be best friends.”
“I just wanted to make sure,” Hopekit mewed. “You can go back to sleep now.”
“Are you staying up?”
“For a little bit.”
“Then I’ll stay up with you,” Cherrykit decided.
“Are you sure?”
“Always.”
…
“Hopepaw, wait up!” Cherrypaw wheezed, stumbling along after her littermate. The trail they were traversing had started to become awfully steep, and Cherrypaw could feel the sharp stones scraping at her pads.
“It’s just a little further, I promise!” Hopepaw yowled back. “Just wait till you see it!”
“See what?” Cherrypaw huffed, shaking her head. Hopepaw was always rushing off, the raging wildfire to Cherrypaw’s gentle river. At times, Hopepaw’s recklessness made Cherrypaw want to wail in frustration.
“It’s a surprise!” Cherrypaw snorted, picking up her pace just as Hopepaw’s tail disappeared around a sharp bend. “Come on, a tortoise could move faster than you, Cherrypaw!”
Cherrypaw sighed. If it were any other cat, she would have turned right around and marched home. But this was Hopepaw. “I don’t think any tortoise could follow this trail!”
“Heh! Probably not,” Hopepaw chirped. Cherrypaw shook her head, fondness swelling in her chest. “Thanks for coming with.”
“Of course.” No matter how foolish, no matter how reckless, Cherrypaw knew one thing for certain: “Wherever you are, I’ll always be right behind you.”
She would follow Hopepaw anywhere.
…
“I got to meet Toro,” Hopethistle purred, tail curling behind her back. “She acts just like you! The way she talks, the way she smiles… I just know you’re going to follow in her pawsteps one day.”
“Oh, I don’t know.” Cherrydust ducked her head, suddenly feeling quite bashful. “There are plenty of other cats better suited to deputyship.”
“You’re just being humble,’’ Hopethistle argued, rolling her eyes. “As a brilliant medicine cat, I know that one day you’ll be clan leader. We’ll make history—the greatest sibling duo! Leader and medicine cat.”
“Come off it,” Cherrydust muttered, but she could feel herself grinning.
“Hopethistle and Cherrystar!” Hopethistle cheered.
Cherrydust couldn’t help it—she broke into a fit of giggles, Hopethistle soon joining her.
Across the camp, Hailcrash looked on fondly.
…
“He likes you,” Hopethistle hissed softly, gaze gleaming with delight.
“No, he does not,” Cherrydust retorted, mortified. “Now be quiet. What if he hears you?”
“It doesn’t matter! You need to tell him how you feel,” Hopethistle insisted, practically bouncing with glee. “You do feel the same, right?”
“I guess.”
“It’s a yes or no question.”
“Then yes, I do like him. I’m just not sure I want to commit to being mates yet.”
“If you two ever have kits, you have to name one of them after me,” Hopethistle cackled.
“And have two Hopes in the clan? No, I can barely handle one.” Hopethistle guffawed, swatting at Cherrydust in response. “Enough about me. Is there anyone you like?”
Hopethistle paused, eyes narrowing in consideration. “Actually, there is this one cat…”
“Really?” Cherrydust gasped, stunned. She had been fishing, teasing really. She hadn’t expected an actual response. “Who?”
“You have to promise not to laugh.”
“I promise.”
“Well…” Hopethistle hemmed, her typical nonchalant confidence fading. “I kind of, sort of, like Pebblefreeze.”
“Pebblefreeze?!”
“Shhh!” Hopethistle swatted Cherrydust, then swatted her a few more times for good measure. “Yes, yes, I know. It just sort of happened. She’s funny and mischievous and actually kind of sweet.”
“Okay…”
“Well, at least she isn’t a nervous mess,” Hopethistle added defensively, though her twitching whiskers betrayed her amusement.
“Ripplefade isn’t a mess,” Cherrydust argued, chuckling. “And at least he isn’t a no-good troublemaker.’
“Pebblefreeze is at least half-good.”
“No-good.”
“Half.”
“No.”
“A quarter?”
Both she-cats burst into laughter, earning a few odd looks from passersby. They hardly took notice.
…
“I’ll be fine, Cherrydust,” Hopethistle mrrowed, rolling her eyes.
“There have been multiple rogue sightings near the ArchClan border. What if it’s the same group that attacked the camp all those years ago?”
“That happened before we were even born,” Hopethistle argued.
“Yeah, and tons of cats died.” Cherrydust grimaced. “Would you at least take one of the other medicine cats with you?”
“No, Cherrydust.” Hopethistle’s ears pinned, irritation flickering in her gaze. A few moments later it faded, being replaced with steady determination. “I don’t want to always have some kit-sitter nipping at my heels. I can take care of myself.”
“I know.” Cherrydust exhaled. “Just, be careful, okay?”
“I’m always careful.”
“You really aren’t.”
“I know, but I’ll be careful this time.”
“Okay. You promise?”
“I promise.”
…
“She promised.”
“What?”
“She—she promised that we’d always be together.”
“I’m sure that she-”
“I can’t—I can’t do this with-without her. I can’t.”
“I’m sorry, Cherrydust.”
…
“Is StarClan always so… desolate?” Cherrydust has been expecting star-filled meadows and rumbling waterfalls gleaming with rainbow-scaled fish. To say that the barren, damp-smelling cave she now stood in was a disappointment would be an understatement.
“It appears differently for every cat,” Stormsight replied softly. “For me, it was always a mountain top.”
“Oh.” Cherrydust shuffled her paws. “So why is it… like this… for me?”
“Do you feel lost?”
“What?”
“This cave—do you recognize it?”
“No.”
“Then perhaps you associate StarClan with loss and isolation rather than freedom.”
“Is freedom how you viewed it?”
“Yes.” Stormsight nodded.
“How do you view it now?”
Stormsight shrugged, demeanor breezy. “It is how it is. I don’t really associate StarClan with much of anything anymore, now that I’m a part of it.”
“Ah.” Cherrydust nodded. “You’re here to give me one of my lives, right?”
“Indeed.” Stormsight chuckled. “Step closer, and I’ll grant you your first life…”
…
Seven lives, and still no sign of her. Cherrydust was beginning to grow restless, that thrum of starry energy coursing through her.
Was Hopethistle upset? Did she not want to see Cherrydust? The cave walls were beginning to feel even more constricting. She wished she could just fade out of them like the various spirits she had already greeted. Instead, the walls were solid against her pelt, an immovable barrier keeping her from StarClan’s true hunting grounds.
And then: “Cherrydust?” The voice Cherrydust had been waiting to hear.
“Hopethistle?” The starry tabby seemed to slink straight through the cave’s front wall, her gaze bright and cheery as she’d been twenty-two moons ago, before… before she died. “Hopethistle, I’ve missed you so much!”
Hopethistle purred, bounding forward in a few neat steps until she could rest her chin upon Cherrydust’s shoulder. “I’ve missed you too.”
“I don’t know if I can do this,” Cherrydust murmured, feeling her eyes flood with unshed tears.
“Of course you can! You only have two lives left to receive.” Hopethistle grinned, her smile lop-sided in a way that made Cherrydust’s heart ache even more.
“You know what I mean.”
“Do I?”
“Being leader!” Cherrydust exclaimed. “You always said we’d be together forever… I can’t lead an entire clan without you by my side.”
“You’ve been doing a splendid job without me already. You’ve been an excellent deputy, Cherrydust, and you’ll be an even greater leader. I know it.”
“What if I don’t want to do this without you?”
“Hm.” Hopethistle sighed, sitting down. “Well, I would say we don’t always get what we want. I seem to remember you telling me that plenty of times when we were younger.”
“Only when your complaining became too incessant.”
“Me? Complain? Never.” Hopethistle grinned. “At least not anymore. I don’t have anything to complain about, here.” When Cherrydust opened her mouth to argue, Hopethistle continued, “I mean it. I’m happy here, Cherrydust. I want you to be happy too. That means you need to let go of me. When it’s your time, I’ll be here waiting for you.”
Cherrydust swallowed. “Do you promise?”
“I promise.”
“You don’t really have a good track record with promises, you know?”
“Well, this is one I intend to keep no matter what.”
…
“Cherrystar! Cherrystar!” Finchkit’s yowl rang across camp. A tumble of kitten paws rushed towards Cherrystar. The whirlwind came to a halt directly in front of her, the shining eyes of Finchkit, Jumblekit, and Moorkit looking up at her. “Mama says your sister was a medicine cat. Is that true?”
“It is true. Her name was Hopethistle.”
“See? I told you,” Jumblekit chirped, nudging Blossomkit. “Hopethistle not Hopewhistle.”
Ignoring the other kits, Finchkit mewed, “Can you tell us about her? Please?”
“Hmm. Why don’t you gather the other kits and I’ll tell you all a few stories about Hopethistle?”
“Yes!” Jumblekit squeaked, beginning to run around in excited circles. “Stories!”
“I’ll get Moorkit and Ficklekit!” Finchkit announced.
“I’ll find Frecklekit, Hazelkit, and Sleepykit,” Blossomkit chirped.
“I’ll find, uh…” Jumblekit frowned, wrinkling her nose. “I’ll find Cloudpaw! He’ll want to hear stories too. Oh, and Littlepaw.”
“What about Ravenshade?” Finchkit asked.
“No, he’s mean,” Jumblekit stuck out her tongue.
“But-” Finchkit began to argue, only for Cherrystar’s amused voice to drown out her protests.
“Anyone who wants to listen can come.”
As all three kits hared off in different directions, Cherrystar couldn’t help the fond smile that crossed her features.
I hope you’re watching, Hopethistle. I promise not to slander you too much in any of these stories, Cherrystar thought to herself, chuckling.
I miss you still, but I’m doing better now. Great, actually.
There’s a lot of things I’ll get to tell you once I see you again. For now though, I’d better go make sure those kits don’t cause any trouble racing about camp like this.
With a contented hum, Cherrystar got to her paws, trotting after Jumblekit, who seemed to have already gotten herself into a bickering match with Ravenshade.
