Hi!!

Quick question: Is the level of regular engagement/posting/meta for BL series right now (particularly Step By Step and La Pluie, but others as well) a typical amount of engagement for a show in this little Tumblr corner? or above average? (or below average??)

Is it increasing because (from what I understand) things are changing and there's more to talk about nowadays?

As a newbie, I am having a FABULOUS time with reading and seeing everyone's different thoughts and perspectives and insights and learning new things. 'tis excellent. I don't think I've ever enjoyed watching TV more.

However, from what I understand the amount of BL coming out right now is actually in a bit of a lul? and so if this level of engagement is typical for the majority of shows (or only good shows idk) I'm going to have to put some time management stuff in place.

I just want to be prepared! Because this is Awesome!

Oh, this is a complicated one. I'm going to tag @absolutebl, @so-much-yet-to-learn, @lurkingshan, @ginnymoonbeam, @liyazaki, @negrowhat, @respectthepetty, and any other old fans reading this to also weigh in.

I think we are a shell of what we once were. At the height of 2gether, Bad Buddy, I Told Sunset About You, and a few other big shows you were getting banger after banger in the tags. I feel like I've been writing more lately because I miss that era and feel like I have to directly contribute to fostering it with new fans entering the space.

On the real, in 2020 @asianmade organized fans to submit letters and other content and assembled books to thank Bright and Win for the work they did on 2gether. We even got confirmation from Bright that they got the books.

I think good storytelling begets good reactions. The more invested we are, the more we're going to talk about it. I think fandom really only works when we're all actively contributing to it in some way. Reblogging and leaving fun comments in the tags. Writing crack posts. Sharing clown theories about what might be happening. Making gifs. Making fan vids. I genuinely think that the experience of watching the show improves when fans come together to share their ideas and build each other up.

Still, there used to be a lot more of us on tumblr. I hope that we continue to be this invested in the shows that follow. I feel like we're about to turn a lot more of our attention to Be My Favorite.

The one thing I hate about the BL fandom community as a multifan is the lack of comprehending the nuances of BL as a soft power . Like, the fact that some of these individuals who are performing in these shows/movies and series …many times we are watching ACTORS tap into a lifestyle many of them know/knew very little about. A lot of westerners (myself included) can not comprehend that LGBTQA+ communities and individuals are not as free and safe or even allowed the opportunity to live openly in many countries in the world. I’m exhausted that this is a constant reminder that many of these people themselves are very ignorant and sometimes riddled with isms + phobias. I really wish there was a way in which folx can understand that; yes, some actors are using BL as a come up, with these people I think it’s clear as day too.. like 🤭 and yes, there are actors who found themselves through playing their Bl role with their partners (*cough* *cough*, 🫠🫶🏽you know who you are) and yea, some of these men are simply doing their job, they’re stepping into their role, giving it their all and just acting…. We need to be clear on who is who. The come ups: they don’t care about queerness or using their privilege to uplift and help condemn prejudice acts and violence unleashed against queer people in their countries.. that’s a given. They want the fame.. The newly found queers: they are literally hiding their relationships bc fans are insane.. their hiding who they are bc they don’t feel comfortable bc BL fans are unhinged, entitled and insane. And the actors: they’re just in it for a good time but get tired and off put because again, as loving as fans are…some of us just ruin nice things. I just..there are so many different things that can and should be focused on and it’s very tiresome to be a Black queer person in a white supremacist world, seek solace in this art form and have it constantly criticized but in a surface level way that lacks any depth and is just to uplift obvi mediocre, white washed Eurocentric looking straight boys.. I’m tired. Y’all.. like real tired…

This is just straight up disrespectful. I’m in no way the most qualified person to talk about the impact of colorism so just look at this.

Ameiro Paradox (2022). Drama review

Ameiro Paradox (飴色パラドックス) | 2022 | Japan | screenplay and direction: Furumaya Tomoyuki

Ameiro Paradox is one of those dramas that are not complex, but even though very enjoyable to watch. There is no extensive network of connections between characters, no digging into their pasts, and no twists and turns. I came across the term comfort series the other day, and I think this drama fits the category perfectly.

Yes, I love to lose myself in multi-layered plots and breathtaking frames. But, for balance, I like stories that warm my heart. That's why Ameiro Paradox will stay in my memory for a long time.

The main characters are Onoe and Kaburagi, who work for the weekly gossip magazine Dash! - Onoe as the reporter, Kaburagi as the cameraman. They are assigned to work as a duo, which is not convenient for them. Onoe follows ethical principles in life, while Kaburagi has nothing to do with them in case of getting a scoop. Onoe despises Kaburagi's flirtatiousness, and Kaburagi is annoyed by Onoe's naivety.

At first glance, they are different and do not fit together as partners at work, let alone a romantic relationship.

However, as history progresses, it turns out they have as much in common as they differ. Just like the fact they are both introverts. Their dislike for each other is incredibly short. Most of the story is feigned dislike, which only adds to their relationship's charm.

Onoe is fascinated to discover that Kaburagi actually has a gentle personality. The hard shell is something that Kaburagi created because of and for the work. Onoe is the only one who manages to break through it. While he doesn't endorse Kaburagi's methods of achieving goals, Onoe also admires that he always gets what he wants.

Kaburagi admires that Onoe stays at peace with himself even in such environment. Onoe appears to him as pure, unsullied in this dirty world. He notices his brilliance, analytical thinking, and ability to connect the dots. Looking at his advantages, even his flaws, such as clumsiness or naivety, seem winsome.

At some point in the story, there is a misunderstanding between them. Onoe is carrying out the action alone, without Kaburagi and it ends successfully. While Onoe is very pleased with himself, Kaburagi becomes cold and distant towards him. Why is he sulking for no reason, is he a hypocrite? After all, he is the one who deceives people to achieve a goal, so why is he so offended when Kaburagi only did his job well? What's this about?

When they worked as a duo, there was a kind of division of blame. When Onoe went on a mission alone, it stripped him of his innocence. Kaburagi always wanted to protect him during their work - not only from direct threat as kidnapping or abusing. He didn't want Onoe to become cold and soulless like him. Poor Onoe, he just wanted to show himself as an independent individual who could be as good at investigating as Kaburagi. It took the opposite turn than intended.

Fortunately, the characters explain everything to each other in the end. Their love is sweet, charming, and this is the warmth in the heart that I wrote about at the beginning.

Coming to the end of my review, I have to mention Masayan, Onoe's friend who runs the pub. The pub is Onoe's contemplative area, and Masayan is the voice that allows him to gather his thoughts, put together mismatched puzzle pieces, and helps him make a decision. In dramas we often deal with a phenomenon - I would call it - talking for talking's sake. Good friends but lousy advisory. I'm not saying there should be philosophical treatises, but I can't stand truisms and pointless advice. Here we have one of the most valuable characters in dramas at all. We need more of them! Such friends in real life too :).

As for me, the drama has the potential for the second season! I'd love to see further adventures in Kaburagi's and Onoe's demanding work and how their relationship develops.

Struggle Bus: Grief and Loss

Hey Loves. I’ve alluded to my struggle a bit on here but I’ve decided to share a bit because I can use all the support I can get, even from anonymous online friends and moots. I’ll share more of what’s going on with me personally after the break. But before I go further please know: I am safe, I have excellent mental health care and a huge, supportive community including friends, 12-step family, a sponsor,  my sister and her partner, and some incredible fandom friends all over the world. I am never alone unless I want to be. I don’t want to hurt myself and that desire isn’t part of my history.

If you are struggling like me, just know I love you and I feel you. We can get through this together. In my recovery program we often say “we can do together what we could never do alone” and I firmly believe that.

Things you can do to support me if you’re inclined:

1. make me a k-pop playlist (I use spotify) If you need it, here’s a link to my Feel Better My Darling kpop playlist

2. Recommend me fic from fandoms I love (or write it!). Currently: Bad Buddy, The Eclipse, Love in the Air, Until We Meet Again, Between Us.

On 11/27/2022 I lost my sister in law to suicide. I knew her for 17 years. She was 30 years old. She suffered with her mental health for a very very long time. My entire family is devastated. I had to put my husband on a plane while he was still in shock, so he could make it for the burial then I had to tell our kids alone, which was tough. 

My mother in law was not coping well and on 12/3/2022 she decided to write a note saying goodbye and attempt suicide. She survived and is medically ok but still receiving psychiatric treatment. 

Most days, it feels like we have barely had a chance to breathe. My lil family is full of love but we are obviously struggling emotionally. We are being fed by our community (literally and figuratively) and every little bit of love matters at the moment. I already had trauma from a previous loss to suicide so my grief is layered and complex.

Thanks for listening, my sweets. Again, I love you. Take care of yourselves and please, be honest and get help when you need it. Whether you feel like you will be missed or not, YOU FUCKING WILL.
