Theory: Handsome Jack's mother was a Siren?

+ Rhys is trans/intersex explanation

I'm super late to the most of the Borderlands train but you tell me if my writer's thinking still working well 🤔

Jack's mother got a "siren gene" from her father and after Jack's dad died she left the family leaving Jack to her own mother/Jack's grandmother to keep him safe.

Imma say dad's death was connected to siren powers kinda like Angel's mom, who was killed by her, by accident. So being a danger to her own son, Jack's mom left forever (or died).

That also partly explains why Jack's gran was so abusive – her husband inflicted this "curse" on their daughter and ruined their lives. So Jack was just a reminder of men™️ who carry the Siren DNA that hurts the non-men but not themselves.

Meaning Angel's whole plot is even more Jack's fault: not only disconnected parenting but also unfortunate biological material, yay! /s

And trans Rhys (and Timothy) headcanons fit waaay too well bc Rhys literally got the tattoos (and Timothy had Jack's DNA which would make him (arguably) an Y-chromosome-less Jack-Siren HELL YEAH 🔥) It is partly supported by the Gearbox when Troy Calypso who is a cis male with a friction of siren powers.

If we hold to the idea that Y chromosomes and/or testosterone suppress the Siren powers, then depending on the mix of those each trans/intersex person has, they wouldn't have any insane powers like Lilith or Tyreen, be last in the list for the "inheritance", not knowing how to control them etc.

Like, if we treat Siren DNA as such, the more X chromosomes and oestrogen = more power, it would choose to transfer into the femme bodies first.

TDLR: Jack had a Siren DNA from his mother, passed it to Angel. Rhys is trans/intersex bc he has a Siren tattoo but no powers.

BL3: Moxxi's Heist of the Handsome Jackpot - notes on Timothy + theories

Ok this is more of me just trying to take notes on his character for some future projects in one place ohisafiosfa

1) Timothy's behaviour and appearance

a) Introducing with his name

In Pre-Sequel, Timothy is established to have a face bomb that prevents him from saying his name. When he gets to Roland, he also says his name rhymes with Jimothy.

But in BL3, he just... introduces himself?

"But my name is just Timothy."

During the DLC, he mentions that his face-bomb stops him from escaping the casino. My best bet is that the face bomb got reprogrammed and can have a limited amount of conditions that might cause it to blow up.

b) Injected with Jack's DNA...or is he

Timothy is the reason why we believe the body doubles (or at least Tim) has Jack's DNA in them, causing them to talk like him.

"Follow this fine ass! Uh, god."

But as we see the body double in BL2, some get voice lines to say to seem Jack. (BTW I really love @kolbasos ' headcanon that Timothy is the only doppelganger that got plastic surgery).

To me, Timothy was onlymade to believe that DNA thing (as DNA shouldn't have behavioral traits in them), just like he was made to believe he was branded with the Vault mark (headcanon taken from @kitkat578 ).

Kit noticed that if Timothy had the same Vault mark as Jack, we would see it through the crack in the mask. Yet it's just not there!! Not a single blue tint anywhere on that skin!

Like, even Customer 1345 has some more resembling of that mark than him. The marks could possibly be just afterdoing when people find out Jack is dead and thus the guy just got the marks which even more makes it weird that we can't see Timothy's mark.

It is plausible that the amnestic anaesthetic mentioned in Pre Sequel tapes is a bit of a key. Timothy might not remember every single operation well enough or might have memories scrapped, so he just has some lies surrounding those moments.

Vault Mark seems like something Jack wouldn't want people to know about - that's why he has the mask, duh. But Timothy knows about it anyway. It's possible that he had some surgery to get the mask hinges on him, and was told he also got the mark just so he would resent Lilith and everybody connected to her.

With the DNA part - I think it's supposed to serve as motivation. Timothy was shit at acting as Jack in Pre-Sequel. Most people knew he wasn't Jack, he even introduced himself as not-Jack, during Space Slam and most people refer to him as Vault Hunter. It's really rare for him to act as the dude he is paid to act as. I think this lie was either told to him or he made it up, as he started at some point to say and think like Jack more. Even if he hates it, giving himself an excuse for it could help him get more and more into the role, or he would talk way more often like Jack.

c) Swearing

A thing that seems to be very silly about Borderlands series is its relationship with cursing. Handsome Jack is a great example of it- he doesn't like some curses. It's why Angel seems to hlt herself sometimes before cursing. Mr. Torgue has a censor wired to his voicebox due to the shareholders so, maybe Jack wants to keep those happy, too.

Timothy seems to be weirded out to being able to say "asshole" instead of a-hole, when referring to Pretty Boy. It's possibly either a voice modulator censorship or another face bomb thing that just like his name, got reprogrammed to only not letting him out.

He gets so happy he says it two times in a row foahissioa (also off top but his planning skills seem to match Rhys' <3)

2) Moxxi

a) Moxxi seems not to trust Timothy. It may be just due to him working for Handsome Jack for so many years. If there is some other reason though, feel free to tell me :0c

b) Date

Timothy mentions that when Jack got "mega-rich", Jack wanted to win Moxxi back, so Timothy went on a date with her. The issue I have with it, however, is when this date could have taken place.

In Pre-Sequel, when we meet Moxxi for the first time, Timothy says this:

"Holy shi-- hi! I'm uh -- Jack. Obviously. And I need your help. Are you SURE we're not dating? -- Wow!"

Due to his reaction, it feels as if this was really their first meeting. But there are only points in the story where the date could have canonically taken place:

Before Pre-Sequel (I think already after wife's death due to Jack's possible bad behaviour in the break up):

For: - Jack had just gotten rich enough to try to get Moxxi back. - Timothy's reaction can be like this due to just the outfit. Moxxi went on the date just due to hunger so she could have dressed more casually (just like in her garage outfit). - Timothy also at one point asks her to marry him. Iif they already had this date, it would also be an aftereffect to knowing each other better.

Against: - This dialogue really feels like their first meeting. - Timothy seems so focused on getting that second date in-game that it feels like it was their last meeting. But it's not a strong point, since it might just be him wanting to get a second date, who knows.

Before BL2:

For: - Jack got even richer. - They already knew each other so she would know that the body double she is spending time with is Timothy. - This moment could potentially strengthen his crush on her after she tried to destroy Jack in Pre-Sequel, esp since this would mean Timothy also would have died

Against: - Jack doesn't seem like a guy who would want a relationship with someone who tried to kill him ohsoai and he was already getting with Nisha - Jack has a part in the casino called "Foxxxi's" - which shows just how much he dislikes her.

While before Pre-Sequel makes sense, both options are plausible.

general opinions: Ohohohoho.. this motherfucker. /pos The one tied with Tina for being my favourite character in the franchise. The one I have the biggest, gayest, fattest crush on. First off, I use they and he interchangeably for Zer0, while most people use either one or the other. I also use it for them occasionally. They/he/it enby Zer0 is canon in my heart. Secondly, I personally like the theory that Zer0's an Eridian in some form. Possibly a guardian? I also think that aside from Tannis, literally no one knows who or what he is. Not even his best friend, Rhys. I feel like Rhys, like everyone, is curious about the subject, but has never pushed them on it. I think Zer0 has developed a bit of a soft spot for Rhys, and thinks he's cute. Not in a romantic way, but in the way that humans see puppies. It's never shied away from poking fun at him every once in a while, though. I'm not one to ship Zer0 and Fl4k, but they both have a love for the hunt, so I think they'd get along especially well. I also think he'd get a drink and shoot shit with Zane every once in a while. They're not too close with Amara or Moze, but likes them enough. I think he stayed in contact with all of the bl2 vault hunters, but Maya especially. I think they're closer friends with each other than they are with the others (the only exception being Maya and Krieg). I'm gonna shut up now, because this is getting long.

Troy’s Crystal Necklaces are IMPORTANT AND IDK HOW and other insane ramblings

No matter what happens from here on out, I think those crystals are important and I GOTTA know what they’re for! At the very least, they’re important to me. So cool... So glowy... *o* I want one...

So there are a couple possibilities for what they could be used for and my main guess is Stealing/Storing/Transferring Siren powers (Yes, I know, that’s probably Tyrene’s power, but, hey, humor me! I think it’d be an interesting twist to something we already know.)

Troy being able to steal siren powers and possibly keep them in the glowy crystals around his neck? Hell yeah! How? I have no fuckin’ clue!

Since his tattoos are red they could be derived from the crystals and, if this is the case, he is probably the one who stole Lilith’s tattoos during the trailer and possibly transfers them to Tyrene. (I’ll get more into this later as to why I don’t think he kept them) I lowkey kinda think they’re like raw seraph crystals or smth bc male siren goes against all the lore (maybe he’s like a seraph himself or some bullshit? yaknow, red vs blue... or he just used the crystals to steal a siren’s tattoos and put them on himself...) unless he’s actually trans which I'm afraid they wouldn’t have the balls to do. but oh mama if he is, that representation will be like nothing we’ve ever seen

Troy having gotten Siren powers from his sister Tyrene stealing them and giving them to him? I mean,,, yeah that’s probably what happened but GLOWY MAGIC CRYSTALS THE ERIDIANS DIDN’T LIKE BECAUSE SERAPHS COULD THEN STEAL THEIR POWERS AND USE THEM AGAINST THEM IN WAR (THAT IS [APPARENTLY] COMING)??? Now that’s some good reintegration shit mhmmmm. The Eridium buffeth and the Seraph taketh away.

Also, a siren being able to steal another siren’s powers seems kinda counterintuitive. Her power is useless unless she meets other sirens (THERE ARE 6 IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE - despite what the games want us to believe, that’s pretty fuckin’ rare!) and what is it even used for? All the other sirens we’ve met have very powerful, combat-oriented skills (even w/ Angel, while I’m still not sure what her power was exactly tbh. technological integration? (Phaseshift-ing of the bits???) that’s p powerful with Eridian tech I'm sure). If the Sirens were created by Eridians, they were probably made to be on the same side. If that’s the case, wouldn’t it make a lot more sense for something that didn’t want the Sirens around to have the power to steal theirs and redistribute them to their own forces?

I mean, after all, “their return is to be feared” and Seraph crystals only started appearing after the opening of the second vault on Pandora (which could be triggering the return of the Seraphs... thus causing them to want to plunder vaults/kill Sirens? who knows lol). Also, the cultists leaving Pandora and heading to Promethea could very well be bringing back Seraph crystals. Shit, the guy you sell the crystals to in order to get some seriously powerful gear could have been shipping them off to Promethea. 

My only problem is they’re pink, not red, but it might be a product of activating them/”storing” the siren powers in them/some weird bullshit. I know raw eridium is a shade or two darker than processed Eridium, so it could possibly be some bullshit like “raw seraph crystals are redder while processed seraph crystals are pink” or something.

Actually, now that I think about it, the only way to get Seraph crystals is through Seraph Guardians. Disregarding the Dragons bc its a DnD Campaign, the Seraph Guardians are all hopped up on whatever the seraph crystals did to them. Maybe the crystals are drained of their power once we kill the Seraph Guardians and that is why they are that shade of pink. Maybe when they’re charged up they’re a more saturated red color. I mean, Hyperius is able to grow to the size of a skyscraper and Gee can absorb elemental damage so 👀

This is all a huge reach, but I’m having fun, so let’s continue.

Now there is this tidbit from the Battleborn Easter Egg: “VISIT PROMET[H]EA CHILDREN OF THE VAULT. WE ARE NOT ON PANDORA ANYMORE. TANNIS IS NOT WHAT SHE SEEMS. DO NOT OPEN THE VAULTS”. Ignoring the Tannis bit, I’m very curious why they don’t want the vaults open. Maybe it would bring about the return of the Eridians and they don’t want that? I mean... technically the Watcher is already back after opening only 2 vaults (Pandora1 and Elpis). Which is a whole nother thing that I could totally get into if the twins (either of them) are actually stealing people’s Siren powers lmao, be it with just the magic crystals or their own magic alien powers. The war the Watcher mentions could 100% be against the Calypso twins. I can’t help but wonder if it should be something bigger though lmao... sounded so ominous... 

Now of the theory that Tyrene is the one who can steal powers and gave Lilith’s to Troy: Totally possible. Boring, but possible. There is that screenshot of her holding a really glowing lookin’ orb (AND THE INSIDE IS GLOWING REDDISH: THE SAME COLOR AS TROY’S CRYSTALS OHHHHH-) which is probably someone’s Siren powers. My only way to dispute this is to say she also doesn’t have any facial tattoos like Lilith does, (Angel doesn’t have facial tattoos either) though Maya and Steele did have tattoos on their faces, and Troy totally does have a unique facial tattoo that wouldn’t match up with Lilith’s at all (I mention this because it could hint that she is the one to get the powers transferred onto her, not the other way around). Also, immediately after the scene with the image below, there is a shot of an area being absolutely BLITZED by fireballs and Lilith is usually associated with fire (Firehawk).

I do think this snapshot happens right after they steal Lilith's powers. Tyrene looks so smug like “oh, let’s see what this baby can DO”. So either she just got Lilith’s powers, or she’s about to shove her glowing ball into her brother and idk which is worse lol

Now, I mentioned before that Troy has facial tattoos, which don’t match up with Lilith’s tattoos at all. You would think transferring the powers would transfer over the same tattoos. But Alas, to disprove this part of the theory, Tyrene actually has a unique set of tattoos as well, as far as I can tell. 

Her tattoos. I can’t tell if Troy’s are similar or not because of her jacket, but you can catch a glimpse of them here! (At least, I think those are his tattoos. His arm is kinda a weird gray color...  🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 Maybe the transference did an ouch of some kind)

AFAIK neither of these match Lilith’s.

Also, fun fact! Tyrene is the only Siren we’ve seen to not show off her chest tattoos. IDK if its a Siren thing or if they just want to show off their cleavage or what, but unlike the others, her clothes are not revealing whatsoever (in fact, she seals up her neck and stuff? Is weird). Troy, on the other hand, looks like he went on a shopping spree with Macklemore and V from DMC5. He’s also showing a fair bit of abdomen lol (Have you seen his ab tattoo that says Calypso? Neat). Interestingly enough, his red tattoos don’t seem to go down the left side of his abdomen like Siren tattoos do (easily seen on Lilith), nor his chest, and although they could be hidden by his jacket, I don’t think that’s the case. 

Also, I kinda wanna go on a tangent here and talk about his face? At first, I thought he had maybe gotten some Glasgow scars, but if you look up where his sideburns are, that is way too clean and almost mechanical to be scarring (plus, its super symmetrical, he has one right down the middle of his chin as well- which interestingly enough is not visible on his bust in the Mask of Mayhem... then again neither are Tyrene’s scars. Worship at its finest). My first thought after that was that he peeled someone’s face off and stapled it to his own 😅 I mean! He works with psychos, right? It’s not too far fetched? right? (tbh the placement of the metal bits (cheekbones, cheeks, one on his chin) gives me a huge Jack vibe, so maybe it's just his homage to the man, the myth, the legend)

Maybe the tattoos are fake/implanted technology in order to keep the cult in check and the crystals are there to keep them powered/working. Maybe he had to get a face stapled back on after whatever took his arm ripped his face off too. Who knowwwws. Maybe he had to have head implants for his arm to work (if its a prosthetic like Rhys’s, it could just be a huge exoskeleton arm) and being on Promethea (Pandora for a while before they left as per the easter egg I guess), they probably don’t have the greatest medical expertise, unlike Hyperion. Also, the crystals could totally just be a power source for his arm. That’d be super badass, just rip it off his neck and shove it into that ring looking area and power up. I’ll be honest, we’re throwing theories at the wall here to see what sticks!

But back on the topic of Power Stealing! For either one having the power of transferring (be it magic crystals or magic alien space superpowers), they could already have taken another siren’s power and are just adding onto it. Could be the reason Troy has 2 crystals (one for lilith, one for another siren), could be the reason both their tattoos are different from all the sirens we’ve seen so far. 

Personally, I like the theory that they stole the new little girl character’s siren powers and we’re going to help her and Maya get them back. Somewhere in the process, Lilith probably loses her powers to them. It would explain why he has two crystals instead of just one. Maya probably knows all this smart shit about who the twins are and what their cult is and has a plan but needs our help getting to the twins. 

I also just came up with this now, but I like the idea that the little girl is either actually working with the Calypso twins or being manipulated by them in order to get Maya and Lilith to show up on Promethea. Think about it. They need/want to collect Siren powers, right? What better way to do so than to jerk at the heartstrings of two super powerful sirens with a huge connection to their own powers by sending a little girl out who “got hers stolen by some big bad cult leaders”. In the Mask of Mayhem trailer, we see the little girl a few times. At one point, in the top right, right next to Troy and Tyrene, we see an unfamiliar smoll character who looks like this (below) and has the beginnings of what I think are growing wings at her back (meaning Siren) although her left arm is covered, which might mean she probably doesn’t have tattoos. Yet.

Maybe she was promised her own powers if she lured the two Sirens to the Calypso twins. I was going to use her earrings and gages to see if they were the same character but the girl below just so happened to be conveniently wearing a pair of headphones lol. Maybe its just coincidence. I do think their hair is different, the statue has a bun/ponytail, but that could be solved by her chopping it off with that huge knife or keeping it in a bun and keeping her hood up. Maybe the two characters are twins themselves and one joined the cult and the other wants to help her leave. Who knowwwwwsssss

I don’t trust her lies.

Also, one more thing, during the scene with Lilith on the floor, when they’re locking arms, Troy pulls away first, while Tyrene slowly retracts her hand like she’s unsure of what to do. Not the greatest of proofs indeed, but something to think about. Perhaps he’s just impatient to try out his new powers. Maybe he’s done this before and knows what he’s doing. She could just be annoyed and is giving him a death glare behind that fabulous collar. We may never know. There are plenty of ways to read into it.

Of course, Tyrene seems like to big boss type out of the whole thing anyway, so its more than likely she is the one that has the power to take and transfer Siren powers. She is the one in the Mask of Mayhem with the wings, and I find it interesting that they made it a point to have Troy’s left arm (the arm Sirens have their tattoos on!!) to be “under construction” during the video. It’s very likely the reason is because he gets his tattoos through his sister during the game. If that’s the case, well fuckin’ played Gearbox. Foreshadowing 100.

Shit, idk, maybe it's all just some weird shit that happens when your twin is a Siren. You get like... negative siren powers. it would explain his Shadow the Hedgehog color scheme smh. She stole all the blue pigment from him in the womb so he’s just red in the places her tattoos are lmao

Maybe his crystals are just Promethea’s version of Eridium, after all, the Vault key here seems to be producing a shitton of red light. be weird tho, since eridium didnt exist until we opened the vault so... maybe tannis just grabbed one of them siren-power-holding-crystals you just brought her after beating the shit out of an emo biker fuck and shoved in the vault key and prayed it would work while t-posing to assert dominance

anyways, still thinking about the one rhys ECHO log where he’s talking to zer0 about “her” because i’m like 99% certain that he’s talking about sasha? i thought maybe he was talking about finding fiona (since her and rhys disappeared at the end of tales), but reading the transcript i think it’s about sasha.

when he says “i’ve been so busy with this stupid war, maybe i could’ve… gah, i don’t know… done something to help.” and zer0 responds with “it is not your fault. no one vanishes from sight who wants to be found.”

i think the implied story here is that sasha wanted to go looking for fiona (perhaps she never returned from the vault disappearance), and rhys was initially helping her look before he got caught up in the war? and sasha was so dismayed at her sister being missing still that she disappeared off on her own to go look, and didn’t tell rhys because she didn’t want to hurt him and she also didn’t want him to try to stop her from leaving. and that makes me sad!!!!!!!!!!

Day 29/30 of Rhysha OTP. One is Crying.

When Sasha learned of the missile beacon uploaded into Rhys’ cybernetics, she immediately called him to try to warn him. It went to voicemail, and she remembered he had an investor meeting that day. Fiona stopped her from leaving a message, because there was also a spy camera in Rhys’ eye; if she warned him, whoever was monitoring it (Jeffery Blake, from the sounds of it) would know he’d been found out. Sasha was sickened to realize how much of her this Blake guy had already seen. They needed to find the missile launch site and stop it without Hyperion knowing they were coming. Fiona came up with a plan…but not one that Sasha liked. She suggested that Sasha trick Hyperion by tricking Rhys. She told Sasha to steal some of Atlas’ latest prototypes, making it seem like that was all she was ever after. That way, Blake wouldn’t find it suspicious when Sasha was gone from Rhys’ everyday life. Not to mention Fiona could use the new tech if she was going to storm a Hyperion facility. Sasha flat out refused at first. This was worse than what she did to August! This was exactly like what Felix did to them! She worked so hard to put the con-artist life behind her. She couldn’t do this to Rhys now. In the end, though, her older sister’s will prevailed. Fiona needed Sasha with her for this. She’d almost lost her sister once before; she’d do the job a lot easier if she wasn’t worrying about Sasha at the top of Atlas HQ, across the breakfast table from a ticking time bomb. As Sasha snuck away from Meridian City on her bike, bag full of stolen Atlas ware at her side, she loathed every tear that fell from her eyes. Even if she saved him, would he forgive her? (”Hence what the future holds” billboard explained here.)

Hey Zed fans out there!

In the new dlc GL&T, at the start of the Gondola quest when you click on Gaige she has several conversation prompts. There is one that mentions Zed and his wedding and...well this is what she says:

**WARNING: potential bl3 new DLC (GL&T) SPOILER ALERT** [read at your own risk.] 

GAIGE:  "We’ve had some hiccups but this isn’t the worst wedding I have planned by a long shot, heh! The only way Zed’s wedding could’ve gone worse is if he’d actually gone through with it! Bullet dodged! Well, actually...a lot of people weren’t able to dodge."

Note:  This post is purely speculation and still very fresh and perhaps premature so please take all this with a grain of salt and as one person’s own findings and opinions.. this is not actual fact.

 Why:

Tannis- Although there is somewhat of an indication that this is the plausible answer from BL2s last dlc, Commander Lilith.  Here’s why I think it isn’t Tannis and more likely a new character.

The wedding gift quest, one gift you find is from Tannis. Her sentiments give no hint (or bitterness), at her being previously betrothed.

With that said, Gaige would have likely commented something if indeed she was Tannis and Zed’s wedding planner, but nothing.

Further speculation, if it was Tannis, she was obviously over it by BL3 considering she disgustingly swoons over that annoying ugly little toad, Typhon DeLeon……as a matter of fact she doesn’t seemed bothered by it in any shape or form.

Which, if we all know Tannis..  I feel she’d hold more resentment and ill feelings about a wedding gone wrong and towards Zed.  She’d make it known she was left at the altar. I don’t see her letting that part go so easily.

So the Tannis theory is somewhat of a dead end. And if anything happened between her and Zed it may have just been a brief fling, but not leading to marriage.

 ***Special Mention:  I LOVE @Ladytalon1’s theory about Zed being heartbroken over Tannis’ rejection and rebounds only to still have feelings for Tannis in the end and it ultimately leads to his weddings demise..pretty interesting!

But..imo  I speculate it’s a new character…

Mystery Person or Blast From the Past?

Mystery Person- could lead to an interesting dlc.  Attempting to win Zed back or getting their revenge.

Blast from the Past- Could delve into a cool dlc regarding Zed pre-med, pre borderlands timeline..dare I say, young Zed.*faints*

From what Gaige says, it sounds like this Mystery Person was bad news and everyone but Zed noticed it…( “Bullet Dodged” and , “..the only way Zed’s wedding could’ve gone worse is if he’d actually through with it.”)  Hinting this person or situation was bad from the start.

But this is all speculation..

Your guess is as good as mine.

My biggest question is.. was Zed the one who didn’t go through with it?  Or was he not able to? ..bc it sure sounds like his wedding was crashed.

And if his wedding was crashed, who were the crashers?

Could one of his brothers, Ned or Ted have something to do with it?

Perhaps this is where we get a Ted dlc.

And again why…

Jealousy?  Forbidden love?  Sibling Rivalry? Backstabbing? Cheating? Ah! The list can go on!

Conclusively, I really don't know 'who' Zed was betrothed to.  And yes it's really going to drive me a bit crazy.  But I think the only factual information is the timeline.  Zed must have met someone between bl2 and bl3 (so within 5 years). Although my headcanon is shocked Zed would be the one with cold feet.  I am SUPER curious who the lucky, (ultimately unlucky) gal was.

 All I hope, and all I can do is hope, is that our beloved Zeddybabe finds a decent, good, charismatic person who is going to treat him right and give him plenty of goooooood loving.  Because DaddyZ deserves it!

..and honestly I'm surprised Zed has been single for this long.  I mean we can all agree he's hot af.. what is not to love about this man!?
