#black bean chowder

Mexican-inspired Chowder

1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and chopped

1 green pepper, cored and diced 1 tsp garlic paste 1/4 tsp chili flakes

3 cups small potatoes, chopped 4 cups vegetable bouillon 1 can (400 ml) coconut milk 1 tsp cumin 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp oregano 1/2 tsp achiote (or paprika) 1/2 tsp turmeric

2 cups frozen corn kernels 2 cans (540 ml each) black beans, drained and rinsed

the juice of one lime 2 tbsp minced cilantro 1 tbsp pure maple syrup 1 tsp sea salt 1/4 tsp black pepper

Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Saute onion for several minutes. Add the green pepper, garlic paste and chili flakes and saute for another minute or two.

Stir in the; potatoes, vegetable bouillon, coconut milk, cumin, chili powder, oregano, achiote, and turmeric. Turn heat to high. As soon as soup comes to a boil, reduce to low heat and simmer about 10 minutes.

Stir in the corn kernels and black beans and cook for another few minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the; lime juice, minced cilantro, maple syrup, sea salt, and black pepper. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.

Yields; about 6 servings.

May 5 continues

Wendy, the travel agent, lives in Marathon and she recommended Sunset Grill for dinner and sunset view. We had conch (pronounced conk) chowder which is similar to mussels. It was pretty tasty. Then a local fish, hogfish, with rice and black beans and for dessert, key lime pie. This pie was the best we had so far.

The sunset was spectacular, and as it is close to the 7 Mile Bridge, the sun seemed to set under the bridge. Pretty cool!

Carlisle: Partial to tea, but also enjoys coffee from time to time. How she takes the former depends on how she’s feeling - sometimes black, sometimes with cream and sugar.

Chicory: Very fond of flavoured tisane and tea blends (often black or rooibos), served hot with cream or milk and lots of sugar.

Last Movie/TV Show: I’ve been watching a lot of murder mysteries and trying to re-watch all of project runway (it’s good background noise for me)

Favorite food: Aaaaa that's hard to pick--am I allowed to pick a drink? I would live off coffee if I could (both iced or hot), but as for foods, I'm a sucker for good thai curry, or really any sort of breakfast food. One of my favorites right now is this little Cuban place by me, that does really good steak and eggs, with rice and beans and yucca

Last song listened to: Never Stop Me, from the cyberpunk radio--I listen to it a lot at work, where I need some background noise that isn't too distracting.

Dream trip: I've always wanted to go to Costa Rica, and hike there (so many cool birds man), but I'd also love to go back to Germany!--I was only there for a couple days and feel like I hardly scratched the surface (or Prague beloved).

Current Obsession: Cyberpunk—tbh I think it’s just a permanent one at this point 😂—although I’ve been planning a fallout 4 and Skyrim replay here soon too

Spicy/Savory/Sweet?: Sweet please! I have a lot of favorites but recently it’s been this really good bridge mix from Sweetland candy store

I was exhausted, cold & wanted soup last night, but didn't have much in the way of groceries. So, I present to you...

Last Night's No-Spoons Crockpot Potato Chowder

INGREDIENTS:

1 bag of frozen Potatoes O'Brien

1 bag of frozen cut okra

1 can of black-eyed peas, drained

1 28 oz. can of green enchilada sauce

1 12 oz. can of evaporated milk

Nutmeg (measure with your heart)

Salt to taste

Pepper to taste

Throw everything in the Crockpot, and cook on high until the potatoes are tender.

Serve with nutritional yeast on top, for extra protein.

The base of this is the potatoes, enchilada sauce & evaporated milk, and is otherwise incredibly customizable. I used to make a variation of this chowder with canned corn when I worked at the domestic violence shelter. This is just what I had on hand last night. Feel free to add whatever else you'd like. I've made variations of this with corn, black beans, lentils, browned ground sausage, diced tomatoes. I think greens would be great. Cumin & coriander would be tasty spices to add. Just... throw in whatever you have on hand, or whatever sounds good.

for anyone who forgot, i believe this is the famous sisters stew anon is referencing:

The beer was brown, the bread black, the stew a creamy white. She served it in a trencher hollowed out of a stale loaf. It was thick with leeks, carrots, barley, and turnips white and yellow, along with clams and chunks of cod and crabmeat, swimming in a stock of heavy cream and butter. It was the sort of stew that warmed a man right down to his bones, just the thing for a wet, cold night. Davos spooned it up gratefully.

it does sound good as fuck. with the crabmeat and butter and vegetables. mmmmmm.

it happens a lot but i always love when they just mention having some bread and cheese for dinner, maybe a protein - jon does this a lot at the wall which makes sense bc it’s easy to preserve bread and cheese by freezing it. i am a charcuterie bitch lmao so whenever a character is like oh just a lil carbs and dairy, idk, i think it’s kinda cute and funny.

i have always loved the feast bran throws for his guests in bran iii acok because i love the descriptions of how differently the various houses in the north eat throughout the chapter. i also looooove seafood and the seafood the manderlys bring sounds so good:

Lord Wyman had brought twenty casks of fish from White Harbor packed in salt and seaweed; whitefish and winkles, crabs and mussels, clams, herring, cod, salmon, lobster and lampreys. There was black bread and honeycakes and oaten biscuits, there were turnips and peas and beets, beans and squash and huge red onions, there were baked apples and berry tarts and pears poached in strongwine. Wheels of white cheese were set at every table, above and below the salt, and flagons of hot spice wine and chilled autumn ale were passed up and down the tables.

I love honeycakes descriptions as well - i LOVE honey, i am a honey fiend, i love going to farmer’s markets and buying the lil sticks and getting organic types aksksk so i love when honeycakes are mentioned too. Like this breakfast description here, makes me soooo hungry, rich people really know how to do a good breakfast spread:

In the Queen's Ballroom they broke their fast on honeycakes baked with blackberries and nuts, gammon steaks, bacon, fingerfish crisped in breadcrumbs, autumn pears, and a Dornish dish of onions, cheese, and chopped eggs cooked up with fiery peppers. The best snake sauce had a drop of venom in it, he had heard, along with mustard seeds and dragon peppers.

I love hot sauce and it sounds like a spicy mustard! Having venom AND peppers?? HELL YEAH LETS GO BARBECUE!!!!!!

what is your favorite kind of soup. the gods above called me to ask you this question yes it is relevant etc etc

THIS IS MY FAVORITE QUESTION EVER

u are going to regret asking me this ro because not ONLY do i love to cook and i make 95% of my meals from scratch at home but ALSO soup is my favorite thing to make ((i love it so much that the only things i asked for for christmas this year were one (1) dutch oven for my soups and one (1) immersion blender for my soups))

OKAY so i experiment a lot with soups and i make a bunch of different ones based off of recipes i like but my top three are as follows:

1 - chili. u can’t go wrong with chili. it’s better in the crock pot & i just let that sucker stew on low for like nine hours and then it’s chili o’clock for a week straight. i do like four different kinds of beans: pinto, black, kidney, and chili. sometimes garbanzo or great northern or even some lentils if i’m feeling it. i do ground turkey sometimes but tbh it’s just as good vegetarian. lots of diced tomatoes lots of spices. cayenne and chili powder and cumin and garlic (fresh and powder) and onion (fresh and powder) and fresh japalenos, sharp cheddar, cilantro, and green onions to top

2 - i’m an absolute WHORE for zucchini and i’ve made my own version of this zucchini & tomato soup that’s so insane i make it like once every six weeks. it’s diced zucchini and onions and diced fresh romas, super soupy so lots of veggie broth, throw in some ground spicy italian sausage and top it with fresh grated parm, parsley, and chili flakes. INSANE. crusty bread on the side if you’re feeling fancy bc it’s not the most filling on its own

3 - guess what, MORE ZUCCHINI. every late summer when corn is in season i go to the farmer’s market and get me like ten ears of fresh corn. i shuck those bitches and cut all the corn off and make this creamy zucchini and corn chowder. lots of broth lots of onions and fresh veggies and top that shit with some smoked paprika, ground cayenne and parsley. it makes like twelve servings so i freeze half of it and get back into it a few weeks later it’s SO GOOD but i takes like three hours to make so i only do it once a year fjffhfnfh
