Rating the Femme en Noir Crimson Peak collection when I should be going to bed (it's not ALL critical, actually!)

no judgment at all to people who like the collection. nothing can achieve higher than a 7/10 because it's all synthetic. let's get into it

Edith Victorian Gown in Ivory

...yeah! that's basically Edith's nightgown copied exactly, so it's a 7/10 from me

2. Lady Lucille Victorian Dress With Capelet In Teal

What. um. What does this have to do with anything Lucille wears? It's blue velvet and it's a dress; there the similarities end. Why is there a ruffly capelet? That's something Edith wears, not Lucille. Why are there leg-o-mutton sleeves? Why is there no trim whatsoever? (that last is to become a running theme.) 3/10.

3. Allerdale Moth Wallpaper Babydoll Dress in Olive

There's a longer version, and were it a natural fabric, I'd be tempted to buy it and alter it into a blouse and over-skirt or something. This one is honestly pretty cute, though I forget what part of the house this wallpaper appears in. 7/10.

4. Edith Victorian Knit Cardigan in Olive

I get that they want to modernize these things for their target audience, but the original being SO much more fitted and sumptuous-looking just makes this one look sad. It's like Wish.com Edith. 5/10 for at least keeping the little velvet pumpkins.

5. Ghost Shoulder Bag

If this were leather, I would buy it. Not a huge fan of Margaret being the ghost on the front, though- I feel like Enola or Eleanor would be more photogenic. Poor Margaret. 6/10 though they're lucky I don't take points off for calling it "vegan leather" in the description. Be honest- it's plastic.

6. Belladonna Maxi Dress in Crimson Red

This is just an existing product of theirs But In Red. Pretty, but 4/10 for lack of effort.

7. Lady Mourning Victorian Gown in Black

It's the nightgown in black with a sash. Try harder. 3/10 and I'm skipping any color repeats labeled as different dresses from here on out.

8. Mourning Victorian Bonnet in Black

You know what? Yeah. Sure! That's a cute bonnet. Good job. 7/10.

9. Lace Mourning Scarf Veil in Black.

You can get a yard of nylon chantilly lace for less than $28, pretty as this looks. 5/10.

10. Victorian Cycling Pullover Sweater in Black

I mean. I guess. What does this have to do with Crimson Peak, exactly? Why is "Lucille" wearing puffed sleeves when, again, her clothing being tight has so much character logic behind it? It's a mystery. 5/10.

11. Victorian Velvet Bustle Skirt in Black

This didn't photograph well, but it appears to have some cool pleat details. I don't like 19th-century skirts getting shortened, but that's more a matter of personal preference than reaction to movie inspiration or lack thereof. 6/10.

12. Taffeta Edwardian Blouse in Marigold

This comes in multiple colors, but I picked the marigold because it illustrates that Wish.com effect once again.

The OG bodice from the movie that they're clearly trying to evoke. It has DETAIL! it has TRIM! It has LUSH FABRIC! And obviously you can't do that with a mass-produced piece, but ye gods, why would you set yourself up for failure by trying? If they hadn't gone for the look of a specific movie costume, their blouse wouldn't look disappointing by comparison. 5/10

13. Wicker Tilt Hat With Black Veil

Once again I feel they shot themselves in the foot here. It's cute! But it suffers by trying to be something that was better in the movie.

Not great by comparison; it's TOO close without going all the way. 6/10 because it is cute, though.

14. Victorian Hands Belt in Silver

THIS IS NOT THE CRIMSON PEAK HAND BELT. THIS IS NOT EVEN TRYING TO BE THE CRIMSON PEAK HAND BELT. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THIS IS?

IT IS THIS 1970S BELT- WHICH, LIKE THE ONE IN THE MOVIE, IS NOT BASED ON ANY VICTORIAN ORIGINAL THAT I'M AWARE OF -THAT HAS BEEN COPIED 50000 TIMES. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND WAIT FOR CUTTLE AND BONE TO HAVE ANOTHER PREORDER OF ACTUAL CPEAK HAND BELTS. 0/10.

Conclusion: Not all bad, but I feel like I actually would have gone in a more modern direction with the resources and limitations of this collection. You're never going to be as good as the movie costumes at their own game, not with mass-manufactured pieces. So why set yourself up for failure? Bringing the characters, themes, and motifs to a yet-unexplored time and place (with some Victwardian touches, of course!) seems like it would have been a better way to go about this, IMO.

Also stop being allergic to trim when you're taking inspiration from a movie with oodles of passementerie and beadwork and lace all over everything.

5/10 overall.

i love a good clueless best friends to lovers they only have eyes for each other thing so I tweaked the story a little bit also love confessions and sort of miscommunication but not the annoying kind, it get’s resolved quickly — more like momentary confusion :)

part two: fluttery.

Maybe I should’ve chosen something a tad more practical for a walk through the woods? She thought. Something that would protect from the harsh end-of-fall winds, and not just the cutest thing that popped out of the closet. Her cardigan had holes all about it, the loose crochet pattern being a little less desirable now.

But, Xavier had finally taken his eye off of that sketchbook and directed them onto her. He carried two, one that he let her have nearly endless access to – bringing to life little birdies and stick fingers that would dance around each other when you were down.

Or he’d even let her give the ‘artist friend’ role of their pair a try and they’d end up with a rather . . . diabolical dog rabbit deer thing running around his dorm in the middle of the night.  

Once. It was once. He hadn’t brought to life anything she’d put on a paper since. He, along with Rowan who woke up to a tickling on his feet, claimed it was a safety hazard.

The other sketchbook that is, he’d only bring out when his mind ran particularly quick. So quick that he’d forget to have a good breakfast and she’d have to bring him one of those weird jam packed bagels that he argued were so much better than a normal breakfast burrito.

Tomato, onion, cream cheese, and avocado. Lightly toasted bread. The lady behind the counter in the cafeteria didn’t even have to ask anymore.

Those moments more often than not, also included times where he couldn’t tell her everything right then and there. Preoccupied with whatever it was troubling him.

But she lived with it. Even if that meant talking to her best friend and the guy she had been in love with since she was thirteen like he was half way there. And feeling inadequate for the periods of time it lasted.

It’s not good for her, she knew that.

But it’s him. She knew him. Behind all of that brooding and mystique, he was just as much of a person with personal problems as everyone else. So, she could live with it. However long it took until he was comfortable with opening up – with as much enthusiasm her attention loving heart could pump through her veins.

“Here, take my hoodie,” Xavier offered, shaking the thick cotton off of his shoulders as he closed the door to the shed behind them, “I didn't notice how much you were shivering until now.”

“Then won’t you be cold?”

“I’m used to the chill. Take it, I need to look for something really quick.”

“What is it? Maybe I can help,” she smiled as she took the jacket out of his hands, taking a step to turn around and replace her jumbo sized cardigan for it instead.

It smelled comforting, like vanilla and shea, the vanilla she knew for a fact came from his shampoo and the shea probably from her own hair product.

“No, you can’t,” he rushed, averting his eyes as she quickly turned around, the sweater just half way on, “Um, it’s a gift. . . sort of, just look around and I’ll tell you when to close your eyes.”

“Okay,” she sang, a little unsure with his tone, pulling the rest of it down as he walked to a pile of papers on the counters lining the left wall.

She took just a second to watch him walk away, the muscles of his back moving together so nicely as he searched for whatever he was searching for. He could hunt forever for whatever, honestly. Maybe even get a canvas to capture his own back profile if that was possible. She knew she’d pay a commission.

Taking a deep breath, she shook her head, snapping out of whatever trance he had unknowingly put her in.

It looked just like his dorm, his side of it at least.

From ceiling to floor, he had pieces scattered all over. They were all so beautiful, she hadn’t realized he’d made things outside of black and white. They all stood out against the dark wood of the shed, pink, greens, reds, yellows, all shining bright from the artworks.

Faceless people reaching out to each other, hearts molding together, beautiful depiction of nighttime from a view that seemed familiar, peonies, cornations, and orchids all in the same bouquet. Dozens of swans in a pond under the stars, but only two stood out amongst them. Everything was of the same genre, as though it was. . . love that had been troubling him.

She scanned the room five more times, from the paint brushes, and the smocks, the mason jars of water, and the canvases uncompleted. Up and down, left to right, three-dimensionally if that was even possible. It was a wonder how a mere shed could somehow contain all of Xavier Thorpe’s life, heart, and soul.

She made sure to shy away from the whole romance thing, or at least she made the conversation never lead there. To keep your feelings in tact. But this, this was different. This wasn’t just him calling Bianca pretty in ninth grade, this was —

Had he fallen in love with someone else? She couldn’t even accuse him of that, it wasn’t like she was ever in the running of someone he was in love with. But was she the reason he’d been so preoccupied? Because his best friend wouldn’t let him talk about the person who was taking up his mind?

She focused on one in particular, a canvas bigger than all the others and some paint still wet.

Moonlight was painted from the sky, the moon was more of a rose if you looked at the highlights, a white rose. And her head was turned to it, she had the type of beauty where you didn’t even need to see her face — the essence of her was just enough.

Who even was she?

“Do you like it?” He asked from behind her with a grin, a box wrapped with a pretty ribbon held in his hands, “I’ve been working on it for a little bit but it was too hard to get the face completely right. . . I guess I needed to see it up close again.”

“So is this where you bring all of your girls?” She asked shortly, a little shake in her voice as she didn’t bother to look up at his green eyes she could feel staring a hole into her.

“All of my girls?” He questioned, a slight offense in his voice, “Come on, [ your name ].”

“I mean, just look at all of this, obviously there’s some girl who provoked all of this and you haven’t felt comfortable telling me about her.”

Some girl, was an understatement. For weeks since they’d gone to the dance together, it became harder and harder for him to keep his feelings about her just tucked to the bottom of his heart. But it was something about moonlight, the way it bounced off of the white crystals of her dress and reflected right to her eyes.

Beauty was an understatement for [ your name ], and to attempt to get it all out had presented itself as more difficult than he thought. She’d been the subject of his drawings before but drawing it, dreaming of her was something different this time.

Like he could feel something clawing its way out the heart valve he’d pushed it down into.

Day in and day out, he sketched sharp and soft, attempting to get all that was on his mind out of his head and onto some paper. Push back the thoughts of his friend, his dearest, loveliest, most enchanting friend.

Was she even interested in him? Was he mistaking a healthy friendship with someone who made him happier than ever, for something romantic? Was he one of those guys who did that? Had he been ignoring her for the last month?

He figured he had, judging by the sad puppy dog eyes that would settle on her soft features when he’d finally look up at her. So, he finally took Rowan’s words of encouragement and manned up about it. He even used an extra amount of the shea butter lotion she gifted him after he complained about how dry his skin was.

He never knew how her skin was so soft but apparently, lotioning straight out of the shower was a part of a lot of people’s normal routine.

A walk through the woods surrounding Nevermore, just when the sun started to rest. A note he left by her room door. So, they met with music and some snacks tucked away in her tote bag.

It made for an easy way to get out of actually doing it if he inevitably chickened out, and a way to make it up to her nonetheless.

And now, somehow, with everything surrounding them, she was just as clueless as he was.

“You don’t have to lie Xavier. There’s literally fifteen, probably more actually, drawings here that have her as the center of attention. You shouldn’t have to feel like you in order to protect my feelings you have to hide yours.”

He stayed quiet, confused. But then he smiled.

“Protect your feelings?”

She sighed, feeling a little defeated, “I’m so sorry,” she groaned, hiding her face in her hands.

“You just brought me to this beautiful makeshift art shed, like literally with neon letters saying how much you love whatever girl this is — and I’m telling you that I love you.”

“I brought you here, because I wanted to apologize for how I’ve been acting. And share this place with you because you mean a lot to me. Not to, rub yourself in your face,” he clarified, letting go of a breath he didn’t know he’d been holding.

“What?” Her voice was small as her eyebrows furrowed beneath the cracks of her fingers.

“I’m really, really sorry that I’ve been ignoring you these past few weeks [ your name ].”

He sat down the gift and wiggled her wrists until she gave up resistance. Slowly, he lifted her head back up to look her in the eyes.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you and me deciding if I wanted to show you all of this doesn’t excuse me being a dick. I treated you like a second thought. And I’m sorry. And this isn’t the first time I’ve done this, yeah?”

She hummed.

“Well, this is me promising to not close you off about things anymore. If I can’t tell you right then and there, I’ll let you know — I won’t just leave you in the dark.”

“So what are you saying Xavier?” She asked with a small smirk, voice leveling out.

“Well I’m confessing my love to you for one, and also saying that doing that shouldn’t start with you feeling like I’m ever gonna treat you like that — ever. And it’s not fair that I’ve been doing that.”

He redirected their attention to the painting that had started it all.

“This painting was after the rave’n when you needed to take a break outside. You said that it was too bright, and took off your corsage to hold it up to the moon. It’s been on my mind for weeks,” he breathed, a weight on his chest lifting as her smile grew and grew at his explanation.

He took both of her soft hands in his, not sure which of theirs was responsible for the clamminess.

“I’m telling you that ‘this girl’ is you. You’re my only girl [ your name ].”

“Oh. Wow. Oh my gosh,” she laughed, her face warm and burning as she hid it in his chest, “I’ve never been so jealous of myself before.”

“I think you were on the verge of crying.”

“A little, yeah.”

“But apology accepted. As long as you can acknowledge your acting like a dick and work on not being so dickish, it makes me happy and means a lot that you’re working to do better.”

He bit the inside of his check nervously, giving her a look of ‘what’s next’?

“I’m gonna need you to actually ask me Xavier,” she whisper teased, stepping so close that their heartbeats could sync together.

“Will you. Let me be your boyfriend. [ first name ] [ last name ]?”

His face dropped as she grimaced, “Oh I don’t know Thorpe, I’d have to check with the others. I’m a very popular lady this year, busy schedule, full happy planner— ”

He cut her off with an abrupt kiss, just wanting to close that painful space. But slow, and innocent in nature — hesitant as he chose where he wanted to go.

With such tenderness, he enveloped her top lip, consuming the crisp taste of a strawberry wafer in her mouth and from his, the three cuties he'd just stressed eaten on the way. They waited there for a moment or three, before breathing into each other's mouths.

They shared light smiles on each other's lips before she leaned in for a second.

“Are you free now?”

Some of my favorite lil moments in my local production of 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee!! It has been so much fun interning for this lovely show and i wanted to share some propaganda via fanart. If you're in or around the Makati area, please pleaaase check it out, i implore, it's so creative and energetic and fun. This was my first proper exposure to the show and honestly i think it was perfect. The direction, choreo, costumes, character choices, are all SO amazing!!!!

New One-Shot: everyone I love will know exactly who you are (Brian/Justin)

I have written so much in the last few days, I'm proud of myself. This is my 4th prompt submission for the QaF Prompt Challenge 2024. This one is for the prompt: Loss of Debbie. (Prompt #4) [4/21 for me personally]

Brian looked at himself in the mirror. He was starting to grey along his sideburns and a bit on the sides of his head. Despite taking a shower together, Justin was already in their bedroom getting dressed for the day ahead. Brian, meanwhile, had gotten distracted in front of the mirror with nothing but a towel on. Justin came meandering back into the bathroom. Brian looked up at his husband and grinned.

Justin was wearing a forest green cardigan over a grey collared shirt. His dark navy jeans accentuated his hips and thighs perfectly. His hair was in that messy styled look that he’d loved for almost a decade now. Despite being in his early 50s, Justin looked almost as young as he had the day he’d left Pittsburgh and moved to New York, 30 years ago. Brian loved that Justin seemed to grow more and more gorgeous with age. While Brian lived in fear of frown and laugh lines, Justin embraced them. The skin in the corner of his eyes was permanently wrinkled and if Brian was being honest it was one of his hottest features.

“Hurry up! I told them we’d be there around 10:30. With traffic it’s going to take us almost 2 hours to get to Jersey.” Justin patted Brian on the shoulder and placed a kiss on the back of his neck. 

“Why are we going to Jersey again? Why didn’t we insist they come here?” Brian squeezed some skin product onto his fingers and applied it to his face as he glanced at his husband in the mirror.

“Because Violet is only a week old and shouldn’t be traveling. We can go to her much more easily than Gus and Natalie can bring her to us.” Justin gave Brian a knowing look.

“I still don’t know why they insisted on settling in New Jersey…of all places.” Brian shuddered and Justin chuckled.

“Jersey City is hardly the bulk of New Jersey. It’s just over the water.” Justin shook his head, applying mousse to his hair to keep it in place. Then, he leaned over and stole some of Brian’s aftershave.

“Ugh.” Brian groaned, as he turned and wrapped his arms around Justin, “Why must you put that on when you know I can’t fuck you into the mattress like I want to.”

“I like your aftershave better than my own.” Justin gave a wicked grin and kissed Brian on the lips before pulling away completely. “Our car service will arrive in 15 minutes. Make sure you’re ready by then.”

Ten minutes later, Brian was in a pair of jeans and his well-worn black sweater. He was fiddling with his watch band when his phone lying on the bed started to ring. It was Michael, so Brian chose to ignore it. He watched as the phone went to voicemail, finally succeeding at getting his watch on.

Justin entered their room a couple of minutes later. His face was pale and he looked as though his tongue had been cut out. Brian was immediately on high alert. 

“What’s wrong?” He crossed over and placed his hand on Justin’s bicep.

Justin looked toward him, swallowed hard, and finally spoke in a soft, broken voice. 

“Debbie’s gone.”

“What?” Brian looked at Justin in confusion. “No, I just spoke to her on the phone the day before yesterday. She was fine. All excited about Violet.”

“Brian, that was Michael on the phone. He said she passed in her sleep sometime during the night. He’d gone to have his usual morning coffee with her and found her.” Justin repositioned himself to be fully facing Brian and placed his hands on each of Brian’s arms. “She’s gone.”

Brian’s brain short-circuited. His mom couldn’t be gone. She was the kind of person that was intended to live forever. She was only in her early 80s. This wasn’t supposed to happen yet. She was supposed to meet Violet next weekend. Her great-granddaughter. Brian stared into the deep blue abyss that was Justin’s concerned gaze. He couldn’t formulate the words to describe what he was currently feeling and thinking.

How was he supposed to go visit his son and daughter-in-law as if things were business as usual? How was he not? Brian took a deep breath, trying to center himself and figure out his next move.

He looked at Justin, finally able to speak, “We should head downstairs. The car will be here soon.”

“Brian.” Justin tried to object. Brian looked at him and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Let’s go. Gus and Natalie are expecting us.”

“They’d understand if we want to reschedule. We just found out some devastating news.” Justin fiddled with the shorter hairs just above Brian’s left ear. His voice was low and soft, as if he felt he needed to give Brian permission to feel things.

“We should go.” Brian repeated. He didn’t have time to worry about his grief for Debbie. They had plans that could be accomplished today, whereas no matter what else happened Debbie would still be gone. Not going to visit his granddaughter was a waste of time.

“Brian.” Justin cut in again, preventing Brian from walking out the door of their brownstone.

“Justin. I would much rather go see my son and granddaughter. Sitting around here thinking about her being gone isn’t productive.” Brian shrugged and managed to break free of Justin’s grip.

During the ride to Gus and Natalie’s, Justin kept looking at Brian as though he wanted the man to talk about his feelings, but he didn’t broach the subject. So they sat in silence for most of the ride. Brian’s thoughts swirled about what it meant to be alive in a world where Debbie no longer was. She had been the closest he’d come to having a loving mother. His thoughts also thought of Michael and the rest of the gang. How would everyone be taking the news?

Brian glanced over at Justin to find he was silently letting tears fall down his face. Brian reached over and clasped Justin’s hand in his own. The blond turned to look at him and Brian tried to convey how much he understood what Justin was feeling without uttering a single word.

“It’s going to be weird.” Brian’s voice came out croaky as he tried to hold back tears. “Being a grandparent without having Debbie a call away for advice.”

“How do you think I feel? My mom has been gone for a couple years now. How does life continue to exist without them both in the world?” Justin’s voice caught in his throat, so he cleared it forcefully.

A silence fell between them again. They passed a sign welcoming them to New Jersey. Brian knew they would be at their destination before long. Just as the car pulled up, Justin cleared his throat again and turned to Brian.

“Do you regret it?” Justin looked toward Gus’ house, a thoughtful expression on his face. 

“Am I supposed to be able to somehow decipher that?” Brian commented, following Justin as the blond climbed out of the car. He turned to the driver, “We will be done in about an hour if you’ll just come back then.” 

Brian handed a couple of twenties to the man and closed the door behind him. Justin was waiting for him on the sidewalk. 

“Having a child together?” Justin motioned toward Gus’ house, “More than having Gus I mean.”

Brian wrapped his arm around Justin’s shoulder, “What brought this on? I thought we’d both agreed that children were not something we wanted.”

“I know, but I guess losing both our moms now has me thinking about what happens to us when we die. Who will remember us? Aside from Gus? Should we have had more?”

Brian stopped Justin just short of reaching the front door. “Justin, I say this with the utmost sincerity. Wanting a child so that we aren’t the last of our family when we die is not a reason to have kids. You’re just saying this because the death of it all is freaking you out.”

Justin nodded, “You’re right.”

“I always am.” Brian winked at Justin and chuckled as he pushed the doorbell.

Moments later, a young woman with flaming red hair answered the door and broke into a bright smile. “Brian! Justin! Great to see you.”

“Hey, Dad.” Came from the hallway behind her. “Jus.”

Brian side-stepped around Natalie and embraced Gus in his tight hold. Justin, meanwhile, hugged Natalie so that she didn’t feel completely ignored.

“Did Michael call you?” Gus asked once he and Brian stepped out of their hug.

Brian nodded, “He caught us just as we were headed here. We decided to still come despite everything.”

“Yeah, there’s not much we can do for Michael today. Might as well come meet your granddaughter, old man.” Gus winked and slapped his dad on the shoulder.

“Don’t you dare call me the G word.” Brian pointed a finger at Gus and gave him a stern look.

Gus threw up his hands in protest. “I would never!” He paused for a beat before he continued, “Though you must admit it’s quite something that the week you become one I lose my last remaining one.”

“Don’t remind me.” Brian muttered, as he leaned over the crib and saw Violet for the first time. His mind flashed back to the day Gus was born, tears pricked the back of his eyes.

“She’s beautiful.” Brian breathed out, around his tears. “Can I hold her?”

Gus nodded and turned to pick up his sleeping daughter, as Justin came up and wrapped his arm around the small of Brian’s back. The blond leaned on his shoulder, staring at the brand new baby girl as she was placed in Brian’s arms.

“I’m reminded of the night I met you.” Justin whispered. “Only you wouldn’t have dared let me this close to you or him at that time.”

Brian turned his head slightly to address Justin, “I did let you name my son, if I remember correctly.”

“The way Gramma Deb always told it Momma Mel flipped shit that you couldn’t even remember Justin’s name but you let him name a child.” Gus smiled at the two men he’d always considered his dads.

“Yeah, Mel wasn’t happy. But I also think she’s just bitter she didn’t win the name war with her choice.” Brian looked at his son and smirked. “Thank God for that. I won’t have any relation of mine being called Abraham.”

Brian looked back down at his granddaughter and rubbed his finger along her cheek. She stirred slightly, moving her fist up to sit against the side of her head and worked her jaw inside her closed mouth. Brian had never really had an affinity for children, but he was in awe of Violet. 

“Deb was so excited to meet her.” Brian breathed through his unshed tears, “It’s a shame she won’t get the chance.”

“She will always be with her.” Natalie chimed in, her voice quiet, but commanding. “Violet Deborah Peterson-Marcus.”

Brian looked between Justin, Gus, and Natalie, a sad look on his face. 

“I love it,” he mumbled, looking down at the latest addition who’d already stolen his heart.

Beauty, dress codes, and fashion: Examining twenty fictional White female librarians [Part 1]

In her 2018 In the Library with the Lead Pipe article, "Vocational Awe and Librarianship: The Lies We Tell Ourselves," Fobazi Ettarh rightly points out that "librarianship is dominated by white women," noting the history of White women in the profession due to their characteristics, the fact that libraries have been “complicit in the production and maintenance of white privilege,” how these librarians participated in "selective immigrant assimilation and Americanization programs," and that librarianship "plays a role in creating and sustaining hegemonic values," while contributing to a culture of white supremacy like other institutions. She further asserts that depictions of libraries as "places of freedoms" like intellectual freedom, freedom of access, education, and more "do not elide libraries’ white supremacy culture with its built-in disparity and oppression," adding that values that librarianship builds itself upon is "inequitably distributed amongst society." She gives the example of segregation of public libraries in the U.S. South, desegregation efforts of those libraries,with access to materials "often implicated in larger societal systems of (in)equality." She also pointed to libraries gathering "large amounts of patron data in order to demonstrate worth" or can "operate as an arm of the state" by working with library vendors which work with government entities.

I could easily build off every single one of her points in a long and drawn out post. Instead, in this post, I will examine over 20 White female librarians across various animated series and how these fictional depictions are emblematic of the overwhelming Whiteness in librarianship. More directly I'll look at what this means when it comes to appearance, fashion, and standards imposed on librarians by Whiteness itself. Simply put, Whiteness is a socially constructed classification which conveys certain privileges, comforts, and advantages that those who not White do not enjoy automatically. It ends up setting the standard for reality and normality itself. Any deviations are seen as subversions, offenses, disruptions, or disturbances, policing its borders in a literal and figurative way. It can sometimes operate in hidden ways at different strata within library profession, while remaining multidimensional. [1]

I'll start with Kaisa, who is one of the most prominent librarians in animation to date, in the series Hilda. [2] As librarian and library instructor Gina Schlesselman-Tarango put it, library professionals often navigate White grooming and beauty standards, while people of color are policed within library spaces. Librarian Jessica Macias added that librarians often face dress and grooming codes. It is something which women of color doesn't always fit into, feeling alienated and different. Macias argued that these unwritten codes ban so-called "distracting" and "unnatural" hairstyles, unkempt clothing, hygiene, and hair. She, along with April Hathcock and Stephanie Sendaula adds that this is restrictive for people of color, facing implicit barriers, claims of unprofessionalism, and the idea that librarians of color are not librarians, as perceived by fellow patrons and librarians. [3]

Her unique appearance fits within White beauty standards, even though she is casually gothic and witchy. In the series, she wears a gray sweater, grey leggings, black skirt, black cloak, and white blouse. She often wears black-grey headphones attached to a media player. Librarians are often shown wearing skirts, cardigans, while others have been more stylish with dresses, cardigans, sweaters, tights, and coats. [4] While Kaisa has her own unique style it fits within those standards. It fits with her calm personality, although she can be strict at enforcing rules, or even stern. At other times, she can be secretive and soft-spoken, but has an ability to know what people are looking for. Undoubtedly, this leads to certain insecurities, and feeling like an outcast, despite the fact she can be nice, supporting Hilda, Frida or David in their tasks throughout the series.

Although Kaisa is perhaps the prominent librarian character in an animated series in recent years, there are other librarians which fit the White standards of appearance. These same standards, of course, exclude and restrict librarians of color, as Macias pointed out. [5] Other fictional librarians dress even more conservatively, even if their style is not as distinctive as the one that Kaisa has in Hilda. This includes the curmudgeon librarian in the DC Super Hero Girls episode "#SoulSisters Part 2." She wears horn-rimmed glasses, a hair bun, a whitish high collar, cuffed sleeves, and a bluish dress of some kind, I believe. She fully fits the spinster librarian stereotype as outlined by Jennifer Snoek-Brown on her blog, Reel Librarians.

The same can be said for the Violet Stanhope, the librarian ghost in an episode of Archie’s Weird Mysteries ("The Haunting of Riverdale"), Francis Clara Censorsdoll in multiple episodes of the mature animated series Moral Orel, Mrs. Higgins in a Sofia the First episode ("The Princess Test"), and Rita Book in a Timon & Pumbaa episode ("Library Brouhaha"). All of these librarians are dressed in a "proper" way and well-groomed, even if not all of them conduct themselves professionally. What I mean is that Francis burns books she doesn't like and Rita demands total quiet, while Violet and Mr. Higgins are more helpful. The latter two characters fulfill what the UMW Libraries called "quality service, positive attitude, good patron relations, and pleasing personal appearance." The clothing of the characters, is in line with existing library dress codes that ban shorts, halter tops / tank tops, flip flops, backless shoes, ill-fitting clothing, or t-shirts with writing / slogans, no bare shoulders, no or few face piercings, no denim pants, and no torn jeans. It often goes beyond what could be called "business casual" ins some contexts. [6]
