6:47 P.M 

Toji knew there was something off when he came back home that day. 

The silence engulfed the house, with only the occasional sound of your knife slicing into the meat you were preparing for dinner. 

7:25 P.M 

When he finally gets a good look at you at dinner, you look shaky. Your eyes swirl with worry. So, he bites.

“How was the parent-teacher conference?” 

You snap your head up and put a smile that doesn’t reach your eyes. “It went well. Megumi is a great student, the teachers are mostly worried because he is quiet. They say he needs to participate more in class and interpersonal discussions.” 

Megumi casually rolls his eyes hearing the conversation and goes back to finishing his vegetables. 

Toji looks you over. Maybe, you're just tired? Probably, a mood swing of yours. He shrugs and looks down at his plate. 

“...Ok.” 

10:00 P.M

The night is deadly quiet. He hoped that after Megumi had gone to sleep, you would be better. You weren’t. So, he put his faith in a good night’s rest. It’s been an off day for you, you can just sleep it off. 

3:30 A.M 

Toji wakes up to an empty bed. He fucking hates it. It reminds him of the lonely days of being a widower. He slowly gets up and begins his mission to find you. 

He checks the bathroom and doesn’t find you nor does he find you in the guest bedroom. So, he goes downstairs. He finds you lying on the couch with the tv playing some type of liminal rain ASMR, or whatever white noise helps you sleep. However, when he peeks over the arm, you’re still awake. 

“Ma, are you aware of what time it is?” He asks cheekily. 

You slowly rise and rub your eyes. Even with the low glow of the TV, he can tell they’re puffier than usual. He bites for a second time. 

“Hey Ma, what’s got you so worked up huh?” 

You look down. “Nothing, baby.” 

Toji sits down on the couch. The third time is the charm right? 

“Bullshit. What happened? Hm?” 

You sigh. Toji has always been persistent. 

“Toji..have you ever noticed that Megumi is like really mature for his age?”

He tilts his head to the side as if you’ve asked him the most idiotic question. 

“ ‘m, yeah. What about it?” 

You scratch at the nicotine patch on your arm. You stopped smoking when Toji decided he and Megumi would move in with you almost a year ago. 

“I don’t see any reason why you should stop, seems like more trouble than it’s worth.” 

“Kids learn by example, If I smoke what kind of message is that sending to Megumi?” 

You fiddle with the patch, still unused to the foreign feel as you grin. 

“Besides, I don’t think he would like the smell.”

“Toji…that’s not normal.” You sigh. 

He raises a brow. He knew Megumi was different. However, he always accepted  it as a funny, convenient quirk. 

You stand up and drag your hands down your face. 

“Kids are kids for a reason Toji. They’re supposed to be chaotic, messy, emotional, hell even unpredictable. Megumi is none of those. Every move that child makes is so carefully planned and throughout. He’s never excited about toys, games, or cartoons. he’s always offering to help around the house, Toji he fuckin asked me about our finances once. Hell, even his teachers agree! How can you look me dead in the eyes and tell me that a 6-year-old is “Mature for his age” as a good thing!” 

You take a heavy pause. You scratch at your leg. 

“He’s only a first grader Toji. He shouldn’t be like this. He-he shouldn’t be a mini adult! He shouldn’t have his guard up all the fuckin time! He’s a child!” 

You sit back down on the couch and throw your head between your legs. Toji rubs your hands that are placed on the back of your head. 

Your voice cracks, “And-and I know I’m not his mother, hell, I’d never try to replace her. I don’t need him to call me “mom” and have me baby him 24/7, but god..god I’m so fuckin worried.” 

You raise your head slightly. Your eyes have become more red and puffy with unshed tears. Toji knows you hate crying. You’ve only cried in front of him twice. First time when you thought your pet Doberman ran away. Second, when you picked Megumi up from school, his homeroom teacher referred to you as his mother. 

“I…I just want to tell him that he’s safe. That-that he doesn’t have to worry about not keeping everything in check. That he can exist without having to be “useful”, that he’s not a burden or unlovable because he’s a little kid. I just want him to exist. I just- just don’t want him to turn out like us.” 

You slump back on the couch and scratch your nicotine patch again. You look at Toji with glossy eyes. 

Usually, he’d put in a snarky remark of “What’s so wrong about me, huh?” but he’s all too aware. Additionally, the shock of you acknowledging your family. He’s always had suspicions, but he, of all people, knew better than to ask. If someone doesn’t talk about their family, its for a reason.

He looks back at you and pulls you into a hug. You lay your head on his broad shoulder. You’re shaking. He slowly leans back to lay you both down. He runs his hand through your scalp. 

“You know…” He quietly speaks, almost as if he’s afraid to startle you. 

You turn your head to hear him better. 

“I think..you’re pretty great. I think…that me and Megumi are thankful to have someone like you. It’s hard right now…but things take time. Don’t push yourself.” 

A few loose tears fall as you snuggle in closer to him. 

“Thank you, baby.”

-Demencia considers 505 and Flug her weird family. If she actually has one or not, Alan can’t tell, they brainwashed him.

-Black Hat can enter the dream realm and give you nightmares or dreams, it depends on his opinion about you.

-Stephan does Flug’s handwriting because it’s horrible (like doctor’s handwriting)

-Penumbra thinking that Sunblast is the lightbulb is comedy/cartoon logic, but it is also because the Numbra sickness makes people a little blind due to their eyes being sensitive to the light. 

-Flug does the grocery shopping

-Flug must do a list for everything he does or else he goes crazy. He’s super intelligent but can be silly with the little things, like Penumbra with the light bulb.

-Black Hat can feel discomfort and some sort of pain, especially when he sees 505, he feels dizzy and ill. He really doesn’t like the bear. Timestamp: 35:46

The first thing that he came up with was a paper bag, then he was like ‘nah that’s too silly’, but then he was like ‘no, it’s perfect because it’s ridiculous and Flug’s miserable, and what’s more embarrassing than wearing a paper bag on your head’. His actual face has already been sketched by Alan too.

Fran Drescher, Millennial Whisperer – The New York Times

Fran Drescher’s voice, if you ever have the chance to hear it deployed in very close vicinity over shrimp tempura and spicy tuna sushi, is actually quite soothing.

When Drescher played Fran Fine on “The Nanny,” the 1990s sitcom she created with her then-husband Peter Marc Jacobson, she was pitching her voice higher, squeezing it up her nose, acting. Back then, The New York Times compared Drescher to “the sound of a Buick with an empty gas tank cold-cranking on a winter morning.” But here in her living room above Central Park, sitting among crystals, fresh lemons, fine sculpture and photographs of herself meeting establishment Democrats, she sounds more like a Mercedes purring out of the Long Island Expressway. For those who grew up with “The Nanny” as our nanny, her voice is so embedded in the subconscious that hearing the softened version is almost therapeutic. Imagine if Nanny Fine had an ASMR setting.

“I’ve heard it’s like a foghorn, a cackle,” Drescher said carefully, balancing her plate in the lap of her little black dress. “I always just describe myself as having a unique voice.” When she left Queens for Hollywood in the late 1970s, her manager told her, “If you want to play other parts, besides hookers, you’re going to have to learn to speak differently,” she recalled. Instead Drescher leaned into her natural gifts. In 1992, she pitched herself as a sitcom star to the president of CBS: “Because of the voice, they think I’m the seasoning in the show,” she told him. “That’s wrong. I’m a main course.”

America has not heard from Drescher much lately — she has not appeared regularly on television since her TV Land sitcom “Happily Divorced” ended in 2013, and “The Nanny” is sadly hard to stream — but this week, at 62, she returns to TV with NBC’s “Indebted.” As in the pilot of “The Nanny,” Drescher appears unexpectedly on a doorstep, except this time, it belongs to her adult son (Adam Pally). She and Steven Weber play Debbie and Stew Klein, a couple of boomer dilettantes who crash their kid’s married life with the news that they’re in debt. The role of Debbie, a boundaryless hugger who swans around her son’s suburban home as if it’s her own personal retirement community, inverts the “Nanny” dynamic: Now the kids have to take care of her.

When Drescher weighed whether to take on the show, a family sitcom that draws on generational conflict, she thought of her own family. “My parents, who are still alive, thank God, were so excited about me being on network television again,” she said. “You know, not everybody could find TV Land,” she added, “but everybody could find NBC.”

The role was not written for Drescher, exactly. The pilot script had called for a “Fran Drescher type,” and when the real Fran Drescher signed on, she required a few adjustments. “People are used to seeing an annoying mother-in-law in a sitcom, but that’s not what I signed up for,” Drescher said. “When you have somebody whose persona is bigger than the part, you got to make it right for me. Or why have me?”

That meant giving Debbie Klein some passions of her own. “I had to bring myself into it,” she said. “I really infused the sex appeal, the sensuality, the vivaciousness of the character.”

“Indebted” creator Dan Levy, a comedian and producer for “The Goldbergs,” said that he originally modeled Debbie and Stew after his own parents, but that the steaminess was all Drescher. “My mom was like, ‘That’s not based on us,’” Levy said. “She elevated that to a whole level that I was not expecting.”

In the decades since Drescher first opened her mouth onscreen, the Fran Drescher type has achieved a quiet dominance over popular culture. “The Nanny” has been syndicated around the world and remade in a dozen countries, including Turkey (where it was called “Dadi”), Poland (“Niania”) and Argentina (“La Niñera”). In “The Nanny,” for anyone who doesn’t have the chatty theme song implanted in her brain, Drescher plays a Jewish woman from Queens hired to tend to the three precocious children of a wealthy English widower, Maxwell Sheffield, who is also Broadway’s second-most-successful producer (after his nemesis, Andrew Lloyd Webber). In foreign versions, the ethnicities are recalibrated — in the Russian one, the nanny is Ukrainian — but the Fran Drescher type is otherwise preserved. Wherever she goes, the ethnic striver is transplanted into a posh setting as the help, and her appealing culture and individual charm pull off the ultimate makeover — reinventing the strait-laced insiders in her own brash image.

Across the internet, Fran Fine is helping to perform similar tricks. With her pile of hair, power-clashing wardrobe and cartoon proportions, she has been fashioned into an avatar of stylish self-respect. In GIFs spirited around social media, she can be seen in a cheetah-print skirt suit, sipping from a cheetah-print teacup; inhaling a plate of spaghetti with no hands; and descending the Sheffields’ ivory staircase as if entering New York’s hottest club.

“I send this when I’m excited,” Drescher said, summoning her phone from her assistant Jordan and thumbing to a GIF of Fine twirling across the mansion in a fuchsia dress and a self-satisfied look. “How many people can send their own GIF?”

The Fran Drescher type is a kind of advisory role. First she was the world’s nanny, showing kids how to mix prints and be themselves, and now she has matured into a cool-aunt persona, modeling a fabulous adulthood. (“Broad City” made this transformation literal, squeezing Drescher into a low cut rainbow and cheetah-print dress and casting her as Ilana’s Aunt Bev, and by extension the spirit guide for a new generation of Jewish comediennes.) “I’ve never had kids, so I’m not really parental,” Drescher said. “I’m a mom to my dogs.”

“I’m kind of an influencer,” she added. Drescher has led an unconventional life, and “I share it,” she said. “It gives my life purpose.” In two memoirs, she has discussed being raped at gunpoint in her 20s, surviving uterine cancer in her 40s, and divorcing Jacobson only to acquire a new gay best friend when he subsequently came out. Recently she thrilled the internet when she revealed that she has secured a “friend with benefits” whom she meets twice a month for television viewing and sex. “I don’t think it’s that shocking a thing,” Drescher said. “I’m not in love with him.”

The kids who grew up watching “The Nanny” are now Nanny Fine’s age, old enough to properly covet her closet and cultivate a newfound respect for her persona. On Instagram, the @whatfranwore account catalogs classic “Nanny” outfits, and @thenannyart pairs them with contemporary art pieces. Cardi B once captioned a photo of herself in head-to-toe cat prints: “Fran Drescher in @dolceandgabbana.” The actor Isabelle Owens will mount a one-woman song-and-dance show dedicated to Drescher in New York this month, called “Fran Drescher, Please Adopt Me!” “As everything from the ’90s comes back, people are rediscovering her,” Owens said, noting Drescher’s fashion, her confidence, and her voice; Owens is still working to perfect her impersonation. “There are so many layers to it,” she said. “It’s so delicate and lyrical.”

The Fran Drescher type, no matter how big it gets, still risks reducing the woman behind it. “All of her is in me, but not all of me is in her,” Drescher said. “I don’t think any of my characters could have ever created and executive-produced ‘The Nanny.’” Fran Fine might have been able to wrap the boss around her red-lacquered little finger, but Drescher is the boss. When she secured her own New York apartment, in 2004, it was here, just across the park from the house that stood in for the Sheffield mansion on “The Nanny.” Soon her transformation into Mr. Sheffield will be complete: She is developing a Broadway show of her own, a musical adaptation of “The Nanny” that she will co-write with Jacobson.

“The Nanny” is a timely bid for Broadway. Drescher takes the stage’s most classic feminine archetype and gives her a modern upgrade: She is Eliza Doolittle if she refused to take her voice lessons.

That’s perhaps the biggest misconception about the Fran Drescher type — that the voice is an unfortunate obstacle, rather than a cultivated asset. Once, a fan asked Drescher about the classic “Nanny” scene where Fran Fine goes for sushi, naïvely swallows a wad of wasabi, and says, in an eerily neutral broadcaster’s voice, “Gee, you know, that mustard really clears out the nasal passages.” The fan wanted to know how Drescher had managed to pull that voice off. Sitting in her parkside apartment, perched in her producer’s chair, confidently apportioning her wasabi, Drescher revealed her secret: “I’m very talented.”

Are you staying home from work/school?

Yes. I'm currently in day 9 of social distancing/quarantine and is still waiting for more news on when are we coming back to school, as we're supposed to go back on the 29th but I doubt that it's happening as it seems like the virus is getting worse here. I heard that the national examination is also cancelled.

If you're staying home, who is with you?

I'm with my mom, dad, and little sister.

Who would be your ideal quarantine mate?

Definitely my best friends. Maybe my parents too, as we're quite close and most definitely a cat. I don't have a cat anymore and I know that a cat can helps a lot in this situation.

Are you a homebody?

Sorts of? I definitely enjoy going out to malls for window shopping, watching a movie, eating out and also spending unholy hours in bookstores and café. But I also like staying in and this whole staying home thing doesn't seem to affect me as much as it does to other people.

An event you were looking forward to that get cancelled?

Definitely Black Widow release. It is supposed to be postponed, but I'll be very mad if they decide to release that for only Disney+ instead of at the cinema. I was supposed to cosplay when watching the movie at the cinema too.

What movies have you watched recently?

None. I still have to do my essay and there's plenty of homework from school, I hadn't got the time.

What shows are you watching?

I usually just tag along with my mom while she's watching her crime show, as again, too much homework to do a personal binge session. Would love to watch B99, Black Mirror and AA again though.

What music are you listening to?

A lot of things! I typically listen to one of those rooms ASMR things when studying or writing, but I listen to anything ranging from rock to pop, to classic in break time. I've been listening to a lot of Halocene, Paramore, Chopin, Little Mix, Black Pink, Queen, Tchaikovsky, et cetera.

What are you reading?

Also a lot of things. I just finished Red, White, & Royal Blue yesterday; it was excellent and filled me with so much hope at the ending. The day before, I finished reading a novel titled "Night Witches" and then a history book about the Night Witches. I've also been trying to finish Pride & Prejudice, Hamlet, and The Mystery of Marie Roget. There are still 41 unfinished books in my Scribd account, better work on that.

What are you doing for self-care?

Nothing much?? Then again, I've been cooking a lot as well as reading and lighting a lot of candles. So I guess that counts. I wish that I can go back to knitting and binge watching though.

MVM TOP 8 OF 2018: SONGS

This is late and kind of a moot point because my favourite song every year since it’s release is Limitless by NCT 127. But anyways, let’s get into this:

1. Regular by NCT 127. When you’ve recovered from your coronary, hear me out. I have listened to this song every single day since it’s release and I like the contrast between the arrogant flex of the English version and more earnest flex of the Korean version. The raps were good (meaning: Taeyong stayed on beat and didn’t fuck up the rhythm), the lyrics were so ridiculously memorable in both versions (VVS my diamonds, stop hitting my line, bust it for a real one), it’s a jam to gym to and that dance practice is probably my favourite one of theirs so far (Yuta went nuts). The production is tight and there were SO many ad-libs in the background that added to the colour and flavour of the song. Also: they all looked great this era and the MV/teasers had some insanely good editing and lighting. Nobody appreciates how hard it is to light something really well.....I’m such a loser about this, I know okay?

2. Ddaeng by BTS. I’m linking to that fanmade video because it’s actually awesome and the lyrics are there too. On the surface it’s just another fire rap line release but the meaning! the word play! the beat! the backing track! Namjoon’s verse! I really wish this was a legit official release and got it’s own official MV. Whenever I’m ambivalent and fatigued with BTS, I listen to this and I’m right back in. I will also link to this amazing explanation of the lyrics because they really pushed this up to Another Level. 

3. Baby Don’t Stop by NCT.  ASMR-Rap. Everything about this is tight and perfect. There’s just so much personality and style in this. I don’t have much to criticise, it was all good: the vocals, the rap (again: Taeyong staying on beat and not glitching), the choreo and the location where they shot that MV is such an interesting choice because of the juxtaposition of this sensual song against harsh Brutalism Architecture. Who even thought of that? I don’t know why it works but it does. I love the dance practice so much and every single one of their live stages was solid. And er, Taeyong has never ever looked better than he did during this entire era, especially during the live stages for BDS and Boss.

4. Fake Love (Rock Version) by BTS. I know I know, this predictable as hell. I was tossing up between this and Tear but I genuinely love the lyrics to this more because I feel them on a sharply personal level. BTS are really great at taking depressing concepts and crafting a song you still jam to. This is really the area they excel at and nobody even comes close at the moment. I think a lot of the criticism for this song was because it felt like HYYH Part 1000 and sometimes you just need a break from that. I get it. But this song is still well done if you’ve ever been in a confusing relationship and feel totally suffocated. 

5. Tear by BTS. Well. I don’t know what y’all were expecting, they are my bias group when it comes to music. I’ve shown considerable restraint here by only picking three songs! They have plenty of bland music but when they get it right, boy do they get it fucking right. This one is completely tortured, which means I can really relate to it haha. I love the power and bitterness when they spit out the chorus, that really translate through my headphones. The intro instrumental to this is one of my favourite things to be release this year and I wish it was a lot longer and used to more effect because the only word I can use to describe it is: epic. I would love to see them perform this with a full orchestral backing. I’ve been waiting for full on orchestra incorporated into kpop. 

6. Goodbye Road by IKON. Contrary to popular belief, Love Scenario is nowhere near being my favourite IKON song (that would be Just Go) because I think Hanbin has written better material than that. This is just one of those songs that is really pleasant, soothing and comforting to listen to but when you read the lyrics, it’s depressing as hell. I really dislike Hanbin’s off-beat rapping but other than that, this song is attached to the time I saw them live in Melbourne last year. Ah, memories. 

7. Siren by Sunmi. Retro-Pop. Gashina Part II (sorry Heroine was just not as good). She’s the only who can outdo her own tracks. I’ve seen so many people attempt Gashina Part II but it all sounds like a off-brand copy. I like the attitude, the styling, the jam, the sentiment and she brings so much maturity and gravitas to her tracks. I don’t often watch her perform and leave unconvinced. That’s how you know when someone is a legit performer. This track always makes me feel so positive and lucky to be a woman who doesn’t need a guy if she doesn’t want one. 

8. Bad Boy by Red Velvet. I went from disliking this song to really loving it, it only took 10 months but I got there! I am partial to the English version too. The verses are lot stronger than the chorus but I have to say that they brought a lot of personality into this and the MV. I’m kind of sad that they don’t do more songs with this kind of flavour because the darker, Black Widow R&B/Trap vibe really suits them. They’re much too refined to be constantly releasing bullshit like #CookieJar and Power Up, I honestly found those kind of insulting to the group. Anyways, Seulgi’s blunt fringe was my favourite GG styling choice this year.

grey; x1 Has a rainy day ever ruined your plans? Yeah. There were a couple times where I was at an outdoor thing and caught in a rain storm.

I like my alone time, but I wouldn’t want to be completely alone with just me and my thoughts and no one else to talk to for that long. As it is, at night when I’m the only one up is bad cause I’m just lonely in my own head thinking about everything and just.. s a d.

And it’s not that I didn’t have obstacles or things to worry about either, but honestly those things aren’t what really stands out when I think of my childhood. I had a good childhood. I was also a brave, resilient kid and not the scared, weak adult I am now.

x4 Are you well-hydrated? Do you like water? I try to be, but I could definitely be drinking more water.
