For Colored Folk Who Still Support R. Kelly When Him Screwing A Child On Camera Wasn’t Enough

It has come to light that R. Kelly has been accused of kidnapping and holding women against their will in two different states. As I scrolled through social media, I saw a plethora of defense and jokes aimed at R. Kelly, the victims, and the situation as a whole. While that bothered me, what really troubled me was the rallying of the Black community behind a man who has a history of sexual preference towards very young, and even minor, girls. Earlier in his career, he was briefly married to R & B singer, Aaliyah Haughton, who was only 15 years old at the time of the marriage. Several years later he was accused of visually recording himself engaged in sexual acts with a 14-year old girl and others who appeared to be that age or even younger. 

So why is the Black community so intent on defending this man to the death? I am baffled by it and I am sure others are as well. According to data compiled by 

Healthy Place

, 

the following is true about child sex abuse in African American communities:

1 in 4 females and 1 in 6 males report to have been sexually abused as a child

Two-thirds of sexual abuse cases reported to police involve victims under the age of 18. In nearly 95% of all the cases, the perpetrator was a family member or a close, trusted acquaintance. 

Abuse is more likely to be reported in low-income communities, however, abuse goes virtually undetected in cases where predators and family members have access to money and resources to avoid authorities.

Black women are less likely than White women to report child sex abuse for fear of betraying a family member or close, trusted acquaintance.

About 70% of child sex abusers had between 1 and 9 victims. About 23% had between 10 and 23 victims.

Child sex offenders often operate in silence and isolation, using manipulation and often avoid violence in order to thwart authorities.

MANIPULATION. ALLEGIANCE. LOYALTY. SILENCE. SECRECY. DEFENSE. 

The case and issue with R. Kelly is that it highlights so much about passiveness in the Black community around child sex abuse. Some people’s responses have me believing that R. Kelly could screw a 10-year old in the middle of the Millennium Park lawn and folks will still find a way to make him a martyr. It’s all about the ‘fass ass’ girls and how they should have not tempted this man with their forwardness and aggressive approach. Like how does a pubescent girl force a 50-year old man to make decisions about how to act on his sexuality? But this is lateral with the behaviors of mothers who choose loyalty to a lover over their daughter who has been assaulted. The wife who lies to herself about why her husband slips out of bed a few times a week and steps into their daughter’s room behind a closed door. The family who meets to decide to not report that family member who has been abusing the younger ones and just ‘watch him more closely’. The bodies of girls are policed and they are advised on what to wear to sway the lusts of pedophiles and lustful eyes. Young boys are encouraged to be sexually open and even conditioned to connect that with masculinity. Girls are taught that it is their responsibility to manage the desires of others and, when they are violated, to examine what they could have done better to avoid that type of interaction ‘for the next time’. 

I think that we must stand up and face things for what it is in our communities. Across this country, millions of young black children are abused and live in secrecy. The weight of that secrecy usually results in consequences such as severe mental health issues, substance abuse, prostitution and vulnerability to human trafficking. Yet, the community continues to act as if it is not as big of a problem as it really is. People turn their heads the other way and feel compelled to cover and protect those who have even been proven to be prone to rip open the bodies and lives of young children. 

How can we say Black Lives Matter then take actions (or inaction) that show that black bodies don’t? What is the use of fighting the powers that be to keep our children alive when we will continue to allow them to fall prey to the predators in our own communities?

R. Kelly is a predator. He feeds off of the bodies of young girls the same way that a king feasts on a roasted pig in the middle of his dinner table. He is empowered in this behavior and tendency by the very Black community who will crucify a white person who commits the same actions. He is not an innocent man but a leeching vulture with access to resources that help him to evade the consequences of his actions. 

So the next time you rock your head back and forth to his tunes, know that you are also rocking to the sound of the cries of a broken girl.

The next time you pay for an album or song, know that you have just become a part of the exploitation of young black bodies. 

And you should be ashamed.
