Elbert Frank Cox (1895–1969) was a pioneering American mathematician, best known for being the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in mathematics. Born in Evansville, Indiana, Cox displayed exceptional talent in mathematics from a young age. He pursued his undergraduate studies at Indiana University, where he graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1917. After serving in World War I, Cox taught high school before continuing his education at Cornell University, where he earned his Ph.D. in mathematics in 1925.

Two months after we were married, my husband took the opportunity to attend one of the top education programs in the nation for his Ph.D. A new marriage is challenging enough, so imagine that in addition to the rigors of doctoral study. Even so, we persisted and we supported each other every step of the way. During his second year, he encouraged me to apply to the Ed.D. program. Hey Fam... help me wish my #firstborn, my son a very #happybirthday! I thank God for blessing and helping me as a #solomom to raise a wonderful young man. Like most moms, time goes by too fast. After #divorcing his dad (cheating), I decided then the type of mom I'd be to him. Giving sacrificially and building a solid bond, plus I knew one day he'd be 6'5" like his dad. When I birthed my daughter he spent the night in our room until we brought her home. He's been a good #brotherfather to his sister. When her dad was not present in her life he was there. When I lost my job around Xmas time while they were young, he went and hustled for one, two jobs to make sure his sister had a wonderful Xmas. He's always been present.. I can share so many similar stories.. His family bear hugs when we were down. But, I am most proud that he persevered to achieve his greatest childhood dream as a Molecular Biologist & Genomic Scientist. Again, even when I had another financial loss, lost home, etc, and he was waiting so anxiously to hear from a university, he was accepted into a PhD program. "I'm not going to my PhD program, I'm going to stay and take care of you guys." "No you are not. Black men don't get too many of these opportunities. You are going. We will be OK" All the while he was away he sent money home to help us until I was employed again. In 2019 he graduated with his PhD and married my daughter in law. I am grateful for the two of them. Honestly, he's desired to be married since high school but I kept discouraging him from it. His wife is a resemblance of me, even in her actions and it cracks me up! So my son, you deserve this day! Be grateful, remain faithful to God he will continue to give you your hearts desires. This week was my first week of classes in my Ph.D. program and let me be the first to tell you that this was nothing like I anticipated. It is very easy to become overwhelmed and feel like (as my Stats professor said) “I am trying to take a drink from a fire hose.” But today, I am focusing on reframing and trying to remember that this is not a sprint, but a marathon. I can only do one day at a time and honestly that’s all I can handle at the moment. Yesterday I had the opportunity to present at my FIRST National Conference - The Society for Social Work and Research (SSWR) on ‘Resilience and African Americans - Does it Perpetuate Structural Inequalities?’ specifically speaking to Resilience and Mental Health among African Americans 👨🏾‍🏫👨🏾‍💻 • I’m forever grateful to have been able to present at my first national discipline conference along aside the Dean of College, Dean of my program, and two other doctoral colleagues. The icing on the cake was being able to meet Social Work Pioneers©️whose work I’ve not only read but cited in my research inquiries. It was a great set up from the beginning of the week that was quite strenuous and left me wanting to quit my program—-let alone present to anyone, I was defeated. I’m grateful to my family and friends for always and continuing to cheer me on—the fight continues.
