#blademaster raven

I love Raven so much. The endless search for redemption for crimes he had no real say in committing really resonates with me for some reason. For context this post is focusing on his Blademaster path.
Obligatory @my-hyperfixation-hell elsword post disclaimer here; I am not at all caught up with canon because I have not had a laptop that can run Elsword for years, so what I say may be outdated or misremembered information (but I've familiarized myself with the character trailers and wiki here so I think I have the gist)
But I think it's also something about how Raven repeatedly starts at the bottom, at Velder Academy to leading his own merc group and getting engaged with Seris, from being a Nasod experiment to joining the El Search Party only to realize the Nasods are using combat data gathered from him- and so many times seems to drop back to the bottom again.
That must be so fucking exhausting.
It's also interesting to me how in his first path story movie, for Blademaster, he says, "No, this is redemption. I'm merely correcting my own wrongdoings. There's no reason to involve my past or my emotions."
He chases after redemption so hard, but isn't that concept inherently intertwined with his past and emotions? What is redemption if not the product of past actions and your feelings of remorse for them?
Blademaster Raven craves a vague form of redemption, while at the same time wanting a clean break from his past and it comes off to me like he is torturing himself trying to find a way to have both.
I wonder, mainly because of the part of the same story path movie mentioned above where, upon seeing the Nasods programmed with his combat information, he says "Even though I thought I escaped, I was still being exploited." how much of this was really about redemption and how much of it is actually just about wanting to feel in control again after what the Nasods did to him?
Even if it means shouldering the sins from things he did under their control, at least taking accountability for them inherently implies some sense of autonomy. Even if it comes with a hefty helping of guilt, redemption is both a genuine want to him, I don't want to discount that at all, he definitely does believe he has things to make up for, but I think there is also some comfort like I said in believing that these are his actions, because after spending so long feeling manipulated (both by Owen's betrayal and the Nasod mind control he frequently cites), he needs to believe he had a choice in it.

“Ready?”
“Ready.”
With a pair of battle cries, the two warriors swung down from their ropes and landed in the valley floor. Immediately they found themselves surrounded by a small army of ravenous insects. Despite the overwhelming numbers disadvantage, however, neither the human nor kor were fazed.
“Heh,” chuckled the human. “Hey, Nys! Looks like the scutes only outnumber us by a…few thousand, this time!”
“Ah, I see now, Tala. What a welcome surprise,” smirked the kor.
As if on cue, the bugs began to make a deafening chorus of chitters. Still undeterred, the warriors prepared themselves. Their courage quickly failed them, however, once they reached for their scabbards and found them empty.
“Right. That last skyclave. The magnetic rocks.”
“Ohhhh yeah. You brought the backup swords, right?”
“…It was your turn to bring them.”
“What? No-”
Again the swarm cried out hungrily. This time, the warriors found themselves intimidated by the noise, and frantically began searching their packs for anything usable as a weapon.
“Hurry up. I don’t know how much longer these guys are gonna…wait for us?”
“What do you think I’m doing? There’s got to be something in here. Although, I guess we could always just use a rock or something-”
Finally losing patience, the swarm surged forward. Nys took their bag in their hands and frantically turned it upside-down.
“We’re out of time! What have we…got.”
A lonely pocket knife fell out of Nys’s bag and clattered against the ground. Not in a position to choose, they sadly brandished it against the countless bugs.
“Tala…I don’t suppose you found…?”
Nys’s face fell as they watched the human upturn her own bag, revealing nothing of note. With a defeated expression, Nys continued to hold the knife in their begrudging grip.
Tumblr media
[Blademaster and Tactician seem like a pretty good synergy, at least in draft. Also, you’d think Utility Knife wouldn’t do much, and I guess in a vacuum it doesn’t, but it still activates any and all abilities referencing equipped creatures…just like a certain kind of rock.]

Let's (re)Read The Eye of the World! Chapter 4: The Gleeman
Tumblr media
Welcome back, my pretties. Sorry for not posting yesterday. It was a day. Today is trying to be in the same mold but we'll see what happens. Anyway, this is a very spoiler-heavy reread of the series, so if you don't want spoilers, now is your time to flee!
[The cloak] was really quite thick, Rand saw, despite what Master al’Vere had said, with the patches merely sewn on like decorations.
This is of course a hint that Thom is not a regular gleeman but a former court bard and isn't just self-aggrandizing when he says as much later. When you consider that he hasn't had such a lofty title nearly the entirety of Rand's life though, the good quality of his cloak is a bit more impressive.
He wondered if there was a place where nobody had dark eyes. Maybe Lan comes from there, too.
Rand's only seen Lan for thirty seconds and he's already desperate to be adopted by him. Poor Tam, getting tossed aside so quickly for the edgier Blademaster with the even cooler Aiel War-related backstory. I'm sure Rand'll come crawling back eventually Tam, but only once he's been internalized some horrible lessons.
The yokels in that village on the hill tell me I can get here before dark, neglecting to say that that was only if I left well before noon.
Oh. My feelings that something significant was going on with this were completely silly. Thom just got punked. LOL.
Egwene’s face was a study, her goggle-eyed amaze at a gleeman in the flesh marred by a desire to defend Nynaeve. “Your pardon, Master Gleeman,” Rand said. He knew he was grinning foolishly, himself. “That was our Wisdom, and—”
Interesting that Rand doesn't appreciate that he and Egwene are having literally the exact same reaction, only Egwene is passive and he's active.
“So. I thought I recognized Padan Fain in there.” His voice was still deep, but the resonance had gone, replaced by scorn. “Fain was always one to carry bad news quickly, and the worse, the faster. There’s more raven in him than man.”
Jordan is usually quite good at making the world feel large and expansive, but this particular detail makes it feel rather small.
Egwene was glaring at him, and he had not even smiled.
Because your silence at your friends' bad behavior (they're not wrong that Thom's just playing her, but jeez) is douchey and implies you agree that it's laughable she might be very pretty.
“But the war,” Mat began eagerly, only to be cut off by Master Merrilin.
It's no surprise Mat ended up being the general and strategist, since he really does love the idea of it long before he gets super powers.
Not with your full growth on you yet, but I doubt there’s another man in the district with your height.
There isn't, but why do you all keep calling the region a district? It implies an administrative perspective that this region is utterly lacking. And of course, two sentences later we get our first actual instance of someone saying Rand looks Aiel.
“Well, now. Made-up creatures from my stories. Is that what they are? You lads are widely traveled, then, it seems.”
It's a rather interesting thing about this series that rumors about mundane or at least relatively mundane things are almost invariably so distorted as to be completely wrong, while nearly everything said about magical things is perfectly true.
[Egwene] broke off, her cheeks turning pink, and the look she gave Thom Merrilin was not as friendly as it had been. “It is not right to make. . . . It isn’t. . . .” Her face went redder, and she fell silent.
Since I pointed out last chapter that Egwene isn't a super awesome friend on average, I will give her a small amount of points here for standing up for the village shitheads who laugh at her.
Tales of great wars and great heroes, for the men and boys.
More of Jordan's unconscious sexism. His world has plenty of women who are heroes, and you'd think there'd be plenty of gals who want to hear about them, and farmboys who wouldn't mind hearing a rags to riches story of some strapping young cowherder winning the heart of a noblewoman and spending the rest of his days in luxury.
The Thousand Tales of Anla, the Wise Counselor.
You might think it's unlikely that Third Agers would remember Ann Landers, defunct newspaper personality, but OBVIOUSLY what happened was is that some microfiche in a library basement archive survived the nuclear war and since it was the most complete relic of the old days the early channelers and they preserved it very well through their age. You all must feel pretty silly for not being able to extract the UNQUESTIONABLE canon from this single sentence.
She had never liked stories about adventures and long journeys. Her favorites were always the funny ones, or stories about women outwitting people who were supposed to be smarter than everyone else. He was sure she had asked for tales about Lenn and Salya to put a burr under his shirt.
Or maybe because she's planning on going on some travels of her own she's looking for reassurance? Like, whatever happens to John Glenn and Sally Ride in the stories has to be a thousand times worse than any reasonable event that might happen to Egwene on the friendly country roads.
Ages when men ruled the heavens and the stars, and Ages when man roamed as brother to the animals. Ages of wonder, and Ages of horror. Ages ended by fire raining from the skies, and Ages doomed by snow and ice covering land and sea.
Silly Thom, even if I take you seriously I suspect that you're not going back any further than the late seventh age, when humanity was paleolithic and the climate was icy.
Oh and right after this he lists a bunch of other first age tales. If you can't recognize these you're even sillier than I feared.
For a moment Thom looked at Moiraine sideways, his face and body still except for making the balls disappear into his capacious coat sleeves. Then he bowed to her, holding his cloak wide. “Your pardon, but you are surely not from this district?”
"Dammit kids, I just told you I don't do Aes Sedai! Why didn't you tell me that there was one visiting?"
Suddenly Rand wondered what sort of entertainment a lady like her might be offered in a city like Baerlon, or Caemlyn. Surely it could not be anything better than a gleeman.
Rand clearly wasn't listening, or more likely not believing, when Thom told him outright he used to be a court bard.
“I assure you, none of my stories will displease. All will please and entertain. And you do me too much honor. I am a simple gleeman; that and nothing more.”
Rand is of course missing that Thom and Moiraine are having two or possibly three simultaneous conversations (at least one where they're making damn sure neither outs the other and possibly another I'm too thick to suss out on top of that), though he does recognize what Thom feels about the situation.
“Is he supposed to be a gleeman or a king?” Cenn Buie asked in annoyed tones. “A waste of good money, if you ask me.” Bran al’Vere half turned after the gleeman, then shook his head. “That man may be more trouble than he’s worth.”
Y'all haven't let him have a smoke and a drink and you're bitching? I can see why you don't get gleemen very often. They probably come the once, see how unfriendly you lot are, and realize they should never return.
Rand knew there must be some way to stop her from leaving the Two Rivers, but the only way he could think of was not one he was prepared to take, even if she was willing.
Good thing Rand's not book OR show Perrin, or he'd have an entirely different idea of how to stop Egwene from leaving.
“I’ve never seen Master al’Vere so mad,” was the first thing Rand said, getting him a disgusted look from Mat.
Mat sees him this mad about two or three times a month and is deeply disappointed that Rand doesn't dedicate himself to the art of pranking like Mat does.
“Battles interest me,” Mat said, and Perrin added, “What did he say about them?”
More good Mat foreshadowing. Not a whole lot going on with Perrin - I feel like Luhhan being the guy who can make Buie see reason is supposed to nod towards the kind of guy Perrin is meant to become, but he never becomes that guy so that's a moot point, innit?
The war is in Ghealdan, and the Aes Sedai are the Light knows where, but none of it is here. The man in the black cloak is, or have you forgotten him already?
The war is about a False Dragon (and the real one is here). An Aes Sedai showed up yesterday evening. And while Rand is right that the Shadowspawn are the real problem, at this point he's a little silly for not worrying that the rider is the false Dragon on the run, using saidin to appear and disappear at will. So he's right and wrong on every count; quite an achievement.
He could already hear Master al’Vere laughing. More witnesses certainly could not hurt. And if three of them had seen the fellow, others had to have, too. They must have.
This doesn't necessarily follow, but lucky for Rand in this particular case it does.
The peddler’s team munched their oats in eight stalls, and Master al’Vere’s massive Dhurrans, the team he hired out when farmers had hauling beyond the abilities of their own horses, filled six more, but only three others were occupied.
ONLY seventeen stalls occupied. This inn and stable are REALLY old if "only seventeen" is the way of phrasing things. They must have expected quite a few more horses back in the day.
“Father,” he said finally, “I don’t understand why the Council had to question Padan Fain.”
It's a good thing he's not a corrupting nightmare yet, or the whole of Emond's FIeld would be screwed.
They chose us for the Village Council because they trust we can reason things out in the best way for everybody. They trust our opinions. Even Cenn’s, which doesn’t say much for the rest of us, I suppose. At any rate, they will hear there isn’t anything to worry about, and they’ll believe it.
Here's some Perrin foreshadowing: in three books the mindless sheep of the Two Rivers will be looking to him and him alone for their opinions instead of the elected officials. Joy!
(Shame the timeline doesn't work to blame Fain for everyone's collectively throwing away their brains the way Elaida did.)
When Haral Luhhan mentioned Perrin jumping shadows, though, it all came out. Jon Thane’s oldest son saw him, too, and so did Samel Crawe’s boy, Bandry.
Moiraine might be behind the Shadow in narrowing down the region, but she is way ahead in narrowing down the candidates. Myrdraal don't seem to be as smart as they should be.
There was nothing the black-cloaked horseman could do that the people of Emond’s Field could not handle together.
Oh sweet, innocent Rand you naive little lamb. You gormless ray of sunshine. You absolute Ann Perkins. Your town is about to get FUCKED.
But that's next chapter. See you then!

hc + 🗡 for a weapon-themed headcanon
Ormir’s signature weapon(s) are a pair of hand-held hatchets that he affectionately calls his ‘birds.’ Their cheeks are engraved with imagery of Odin’s ravens (Hugin and Munin) in place of the Blademaster’s heron sigil, though he'd flirted with affiliation in the Warrior’s Guild in his past. They’d not flown in many years before the attack on Nornwatch. Ormir had originally purchased them for show, mainly as insurance when he was a young salesman in the lower city, long before he was enlisted or had any clue how to wield them properly. They’re now battle-tested and rough with notches to mark his souls.

Life on ZDR, Volume II: Ancestry and the Philosophy of Death
Welcome to my brainrot dump. This time, I'll be talking about Mawkin beliefs surrounding death. None of this is canon; I invented half of it in the shower and the other half in bed when I should have been asleep.
<- Previous post.
Death
The Mawkin are warriors; they crave death. They spend every waking moment knowing it could be their last, and when it finally comes to them, they welcome the end of their lives with a brand of grim fervor not exhibited by other tribes. Death is inevitable. The Mawkin understand this, and embrace it as a reward for their service to the tribe.
In this vein, suffering is idealized. Life is going to throw everything it has at you to make you miserable. The world is cruel and doesn't love us as our parents do. Storms and other phenomena will ruin crops and structures, making life harder for everyone who needed those resources. Life sucks, so the Mawkin value the will to trudge through the muck despite these hardships.
Their lust for the void is enough to distinguish them culturally from the other tribes, but their philosophy on the ideal death splits that division further. The Mawkin would rather die a glorious, honorable death in battle than in their sleep: the prospect of dying peacefully at an old age disturbs them. Mortals are not meant to die weak and alone, they are meant to struggle. A warrior's death should be an ordeal to be witnessed. There is little honor in dying soft and lazy, so what's the ideal way to go out?
For a warrior's death to be honorable, they must suffer or bleed. An old warrior who knows their time is near will seek death from one of their peers in the form of a duel. It is not enough that their peers know of their past deeds; a warrior must prove themselves at the end of the road. In the very early days before technology was so advanced, warriors didn't always live upwards of thousands of years. They were killed, whether by beasts or opposing forces. This ritual reflects that.
This ideal is a cornerstone of Mawkin death-worship. Consequently, a desperate elder may lash out. Long before Raven Beak's time, the Mawkin were led by the High Lord Shrouded Owl, who ruled until cruel nature took his eyes and all feeling in his left knee. His is a famous example of the proving death, if not for the fact he was a high-profile individual, then because of the spectacle of it all. As his inevitable death drew near, he grew reclusive and had frequent outbursts over trivial infractions.
Tumblr media
He may have lost his marbles towards the end there, but he was a king through and through.
Eventually, he emerged from the citadel, weapon drawn and shirtless, and called the army to attention. He demanded a worthy successor to step forth and supplant him, but none dared try; despite being completely blind and having a limp, he was still the most skilled blademaster on the planet. Enraged by this display of cowardice, he threatened to slaughter them wholesale until a worthy body could stop him. The most ambitious among the Mawkin realized they had no choice but to try, so they stepped up to the challenge one by one. He killed eleven soldiers in successive duels, shouting to the ancestors to witness his glory all the while. He was finally brought down by an accomplished aviator and firearms specialist named Red Tail, who ruled for 50 years until she was assassinated by a member of her honor guard.
The Mawkin revere the primal Self. Life is fleeting, death is glorious, and the marks borne upon one's flesh are proof of a warrior's existence. All are born to die, and the body is a vessel that carries one to the end. Pain is a reminder of the fragile life cradled within that vessel, and scars are trophies that allow others to witness your experience. It is integral that a warrior maintains their physical aptitude: training regularly, never skipping daily meditation, bathing often, eating when they're hungry, staying hydrated, etc. The Mawkin strive to be in peak condition not just so they can serve the tribe, but as part of a bid for spiritual fulfillment. If an individual does not nurture the body as the soldiers do, they train the mind to compensate.
Tumblr media
This scholar might not perform eighty three repetitions every morning, but the brain is also a muscle.
Basic Mawkin philosophy can be summarized with a pair of quotes from high priest Silver Wind: "The body is sacred: it carries us from the egg to the tomb. [...] A warrior's duties are threefold: serve the Mawkin, honor the Ancestors, and seek fulfillment in glory."
The Mawkin harbor no fear of death. This makes them a valuable ally and a fearsome foe. This fact also influenced the Thoha's decision to enlist their aid in driving back the Metroids. You can't go wrong with asking a warrior to help you beat back a gelatinous menace, but an army whose soldiers are raised from hatching to welcome death with a smile? They're a force to be reckoned with.
Heritage
Ancestry is important to the Mawkin. It is crucial that a warrior remembers those who paved the way for their existence, and those whose sacrifices brought the tribe where it is today. I mentioned in a previous headcanon post that any member of the tribe could rattle off their entire family tree at a moment's notice, and I wasn't kidding.
Tumblr media
Like I said: on a dime.
The greatest of the Mawkin ancestor spirits are the old Warlords. When a Mawkin dies, their remains can be handled in one of many ways (the most common being a stone cairn marked with something personal or a strip of burgundy cloth), but the Warlords are always interred in an extravagant vault. Most of these vaults lie in the plateaus surrounding Ferenia, as the dry climate is suited for protecting the remains of valuable individuals from rot or general destruction. A Warlord can choose what they want to be done with their corpse just like any other soldier, but they don't get a choice in being deified following their death. Every Warlord gets a fancy place to store their remains after their death, even if it's a secluded little hole in the ground.
Ancestor Worship and You: a Primer
The Mawkin participate in ancestor worship. The Warlords are the greatest of their ancestors: they lead the tribe in life, and are considered "ancestors to us all" when they finally kick it. The Mawkin don't necessarily pray to their ancestors, but they take great care in tending the remains of their fellow tribesmen and go as far as to seek guidance from their predecessors and the greater spirits in times of hardship. When I say the old Warlords are deified, they're not literally elevated to the status of a god. Rather, they are put on a pedestal and held up as one the entire tribe should look to as an example of what can be accomplished in life. Proof of their existence is carved out in a vista somewhere, and chicks hatched to future generations will hope these great ancestors take notice of their struggles and offer advice.
Tumblr media
Dressings from the tomb of High Lord Many Whispers: a figure resembling the dead or someone important to them, and a canopic jar with painted flourishes utilizing imagery both new and old.
Even further, many Warlords are associated with a particular concept or hardship depending on what they accomplished in life. For instance, those who made it their goal to wage war on others have their names invoked in times of conflict or by those seeking glory in battle. Commander Red Tail is respected by pilots, who may utter a few words in her name before taking off during a particularly nasty storm.
The act of asking one's ancestors for advice deserves a whole post of its own, because it turns out death is not a one-and-done effort (tune in next time when we talk about priests). As for why they do it? Dead people have lived full lives. They have experience, and they can give us advice on what to do when we're struggling. It's like asking your grandpa about the right technique on your next woodworking project, but he's not really your grandpa, you're asking him how you should navigate a tumultuous relationship, and he's been dead for a hundred years.
If you're born to the Mawkin, you will be remembered by someone 600 years from now, whether you do anything of note or not. The exception is if you do something to dishonor the tribe, but even then, your name will be cursed and held in the knowledge of a small conclave of priests.
Mawkin culture is built off a blend of stark-naked science, brutal philosophy, and the odd superstition. Most of that superstition revolves around the dead.

Assorted Chapter 16 - 24 thoughts
GALAD IS A WHITECLOAK NOW!?!?!? I really like Galad as a character. Crazy that he does the right thing no matter what and decided that that included joining the white cloaks.🤡 Very interested to see if he ends up protecting his sister and her friends therefore kind of supporting the Aes Sedai, an organization he is now theologically against, or if he hands them in, betraying the trust of his family which also seems like a big thing for him. Which side of right will win out inside of himself?
Gawyn * rolls eyes * I liked him at the beginning but ever since the Tower coup incident I do not like him at all. He’s so annoying! And the way he thinks he’s right about everything? No thank you. He and Egwene better not end up together or I will commit a crime. He does not deserve Egwene.
I’m really liking how this book has given us a lot of different perspectives! It’s refreshing to see what other characters are up to!
Elayne, Thom is basically your step-dad. Please, I am begging you.
Finally, the Black Ajah are going to be scary and not just a totally useless group of 12 people! I’m excited to actually be afraid of them. Absolutely loving Moghedien!
Glad to get the confirmation that Gaebril is indeed Rahvin.
The mind control/compulsion weave is super unnerving from the perspective of someone under the compulsion. The fact Morgase has months and months of fake memories is terrifying!
I would read an entire book about Morgase though ngl.
LINI!!!! I need Lini and Nynaeve to meet so bad. When she said, when you get to my age all sayings are old sayings, I lost it. I would die for Lini.
MORGASE WAS GONNA MARRY THOM SSFDDFSGSDGGDS
Wildly invested in this Morgase-Gareth-Siuan side plot.
I kind of want Morgase and Gareth to meet up before Gareth and Siuan just because I very badly want to see their exes reunion.
Ngl I have no idea what is going on with Padan Fain anymore. I was so sure he was going to be set up as a foil or some kind of parallel to Mat but he seems to be obsessed with Perrin now? Not sure why, but I’m loving his batshit insane vibe.
Something something Moiriane and her relationship to time. Her being like “I have no time” a couple of chapters ago to now being like your right your right we have time.
The Aiel honour system giving positive points to being Aes Sedai and negative points for being Cairhenin making Moiraine cancel out. Amazing.
Everytime Rand is forced to make a big choice I take psychic damage. Baby no... 🥺😢
I want to know more about Aiel Flower symbolism actually. What kinds of plants grow in the waste?
MAGIC SWORD MAGIC SWORD MAGIC SWORD I LOVE MAGIC SWORDS. The Cairhein sun motif just goes so hard. There better be a cool thematic thing that happens with this sword otherwise what is the point??? Also where is this sword from cause like I really doubt that Laman was a blademaster, man does not give me those vibes. SO HYPED FOR THIS MAGIC SWORD WITH A SORDID BACKSTORY!!!!
Just realized Mats thing has a raven on it. Does that have something to do with the Seanchan maybe? Like maybe the Seeker people with the raven tattoos? Or I guess it could just be cursed by the dark one or something. Mat would become un-possed just to go and immediately pick up another cursed object.
RAND BABY NO
What is up with that other doorway terangreal? WHY DOES MOIRAINE CARE ABOUT IT? I just need to know.
Nynaeve as the carnival book-keeper is everything I did not know I needed from life. Every second of screentime Nynaeve gets, I love her more. OF COURSE she says she's the book-keeper.
Everyone reading into everything Rand does as the madness. Me frantically pointing at mat: "is anyone gonna look at that???"
For real though, I don't think Rand is mad at all yet. The little bits and pieces of information we get from his past as Lews Therin are definitely starting him in that direction for sure but all of his choices have been well thought out and logical so far. A lot of characters are saying he's become colder and/or harder since starting on this journey that has now been almost an entire year and are quick to blame this change on the madness. But really all of his choices and decisions are of someone trying to gain trust and respect from those around them and doing what needs to be done. Like sorry Egwene but Rand has not become harder because of the madness. He has become harder because that's what he has needed to become to survive and gain followers.

@defyances said :   recklessness is felt through her muscles when she presses her lithe body against the demon’s, the dancer no longer listening to the rhythm of her mind but of her heart as it aches for intimacy & seethes in irritation. irelia’s fingers find their way to the purgatory of evelynn’s hips, piercing the soft flesh with dull nails while plump margins clash desperately against otherworldly ones -- and boundaries are once again crossed when teeth clash and breaths are stolen : all of it a dance of hate.
Oh, how the Ionian often found new ways to mesmerize the immortal demoness. her will was strong --  was. the she-demon could give credit where it was due, she had resisted the call to temptation for quite a time, but just like every mortal evelynn had come across thus far, irelia eventually fell like the rest.
Once she was precise, even now in how the raven-haired beauty approached her. the digits of irelia’s hands feel rehearsed, as if this confrontation had been scripted ; had she thought of this scenario so many times in her mind that the blue-eyed woman was too frustrated to wait any longer, her patience having finally run out, & took the chance despite the risks ?
Regardless, evelynn is drinking in the guilty pleasure that the other had been depriving herself of for so long. it tastes bittersweet, like truest piece of dark chocolate. the plump lips of the fair-skinned blademaster are soft, & they themselves held the flavor of tea with a tinge of salt, perhaps from a sprinkle of sweat after training earlier that day.
The she-demon has her flavors, too. Her own lips taste of decadent sweetness, invading past irelia’s defenses & assaulting her senses with overwhelming amounts of satisfaction that came with the sampling of a kiss. as much as evelynn gleefully drank in the absolute malice that dripped from the blademaster’s being, the shape-shifter knows she wants more.

Grim Dawn: Nightblade Build Guides for Beginners
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Copyright Crate Entertainment Nightblade is a melee assassin mastery that excels in killing enemies. Considered as the deadliest of all mastery, Nightblade’s sets of skills focuses on ending lives quickly as well as walking away from harm. Note: Recommended Devotions are not in order. Meaning, it is up to you what constellation you should learn first. Just in case you don’t know, devotion points can also be re-assign in order to meet certain requirements. When it comes to gear components, resistance to different damage types should be the priority for your character to survive on higher difficulty.
Basic Blademaster
A dual wielding build that deals huge amount of pierce and bleeding damage. This is personally my most recommended build for beginners since its play style is simple yet powerful. The build’s foundation in killing enemies is in its basic attacks with multiple passive bonuses. Attributes Physique is the primary attributes of this build in order to survive the harsh environment of melee combat. But don’t forget to assign points on cunning to equip the best one-handed weapons, and enough spirit to equip the best jewelries. Nightblade Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Dual Blades (16 points) – Belgothian’s Shears (8 points) – Amarasta’s Quick Cut (8 points) – Whirling Death (8 points) – Execution (8 points) Ring of Steel (16 points) – Circle of Slaughter (12 points) Shadow Strike (1 point) Blade Barrier (12 points) Blade Spirit (16 points) Phantasmal Armor (2 points) Soldier Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Cadence (1 point) Field Command (12 points) – Squad Tactics (12 points) Oleron’s Rage (12 points) Devotion Tortoise Assassin’s Blade Empty Throne Harpy Assassin Blades of Nadaan Bard’s Harp Harvestman’s Sycthe Unknown Soldier – Assign Living Shadow on Cadence for optimize effect. Oleron – At this rate, you will be 2 points short on devotion points. Just learn the necessary prerequisites to get the Blind Fury. Equipment Priorities Your main priority here are items that increases pierce and bleeding damage. It is also a good idea to equip items that gives you chance to auto cast Ring of Steel such as Reaver’s Claw. Once you reach level 75, use Seal of Blades on your weapons. The component’s bonus perfectly fits for this build. How to play? Use Shadow Strike to quickly engage enemies, then immediately cast Ring of Steel whenever it is available. The primary damage dealer of this build is its barrage of basic attacks, that’s more than enough to finish enemies in no time.
Cold Assassin Spellbreaker
Dual-wielding build that mainly deals cold damage, as well as elemental damage. A great path if you prefer to be dealing magical type of damage while dual-wielding melee weapons. It has also high survivability due to multiple skills that can freeze mobs and absorbs full damage. Another advantage of this build is it has the best starting skills for early speed leveling (Olexra’s Flash Freeze, Night’s Chill, Pnuematic Burst). This build can take you from level 1 to 50 in no time. Attributes Put enough points on both cunning and spirit depending on requirement of your desired equipment. Since this is another melee type build, majority of points should be put on Physique. Nightblade Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Dual Blades (1 point) – Execution (8 points) Ring of Steel (16 points) – Ring of Frost (1 point Shadow Strike (16 points) – Nightfall (12 points) Pnuematic Burst (12 points) – Breath of Belgothian (1 point) – Shadow Dance (1 point) – Elemental Awakening (12 points) Veil of Shadow (10 points) – Night’s Chill (10 points) Blade Barrier (9 points) Blade of Spirit (16 points) Merciless Repertoire (12 points) Arcanist Skills Mastery Bar (20 points) Olexra’s Flash Freeze (12 points) – Absolute Zero (12 points) Mirror of Ereoctes (1 point) Maiven’s Sphere of Protection (12 points) Devotion Tsunami – Assign Tsunami on Olexra’s Flash Freeze Spider Raven Quill Hawk Owl Harpy Amatok the Spirit of Winter – Assign Blizzard to Blade Spirit. Leviathan – Assign Whirlpool to Ring of Steel. Blind Sage – Assign Elemental Seeker to Execution. Equipment Priorities Equip items that grants cold or elemental damage bonus. For weapons, make sure the character is dual-wielding or else it won’t get bonuses from dual-wield exclusive skills. How to play? This build relies on both normal attacks and spamming skills. After initiating the fight with Shadow Strike, immediately cast Olexra’s Flash Freeze to control the mobs around you, saving your character from multiple potential harm. Once you initiated the fight, use Ring of Steel and barrage of your basic attacks to quickly finish off your enemies. Tip: For a more convenient and effective game play, assign Ring of Steel to your left click as basic attack.
Melee Frost Spellbreaker
A Spellbreaker build that wields powerful two-handed weapon called Soulrend. When in combat, the build deals massive frostburn and cold damage that often scores critical hit. Attributes This build also relies on Physique to survive in melee combat, so put large amount of points there. Then 15 or 30 points depending upon your preference on cunning, this will ensure that you will often deal critical damage. Scoring critical hit is important for this build to often proc Dread Ice from Soulrend and Blizzard from Amatok the Spirit of Winter. You may choose not to put any points on spirit, since the mastery bar from Arcanist and Nightblade can provide enough of those attributes. Nightblade Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Amarasta’s Blade Burst (16 points) – Lethal Assault (12 points) Ring of Steel (16 points) – Ring of Frost (1 point) Shadow Strike (16 points) – Nightfall (12 points) Pnuematic Burst (1 point) – Elemental Awakening (12 points) Blade Barrier (8 points) Phantasmal Armor (1 point) Merciless Repertoire (12 points) Arcanist Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Iskandra’s Elemental Exchange (1 point) – Elemental Balance (12 points) Maiven’s Sphere of Protection (12 points) Star Pact (12 points) Devotion Tsunami Spider Raven Quill Hawk Empty Throne Harpy Amatok the Spirit of Winter Kraken Leviathan – Assign Whirpool to Ring of Steel. Blind Sage – Assign Elemental Seeker to Amarasta’s Blade Burst Equipment Priorities The first damage type that you should look for from equipment is Frostburn, then cold. Recommended weapon is Soulrend that can drop from Alkamos, Lord Executioner inside Steps of Torment: Anguish. How to play? Spam your skills on enemies by using Shadow Strike first, then Amarasta’s Blade Burst and Ring of Steel To survive enemies that can deal heavy damage like bosses, hit and run tactics is recommended. Bursting all your skills on target, then running away to recover your health and cooldown, letting your massive frostburn damage melt your enemies. Or you can just use Blade Barrier after spamming your skills, then watch your enemies die from frostburn while you are inside a safe haven.
Cold Grim Reaper
Very similar to Melee Frost Spellbreaker. Cold is still the main damage type of this build, while Soulrend from Alkamos is still the recommended weapon to use. The difference in this build is in the primary attack which is Bone Harvest enhanced by Harvester of Death, this transmuter makes the skill more powerful when a two-handed melee weapon is equipped. Attributes Same as Melee Frost Spellbreaker. Nightblade Skills Mastery Bar (50 points) Ring of Steel (16 points) – Ring of Frost (1 point) Shadow Strike (16 points) – Nightfall (12 points) Veil of Shadow (10 points) – Night’s Chill (10 points) Blade Spirit (16 points) Blade Barrier (12 points) Phantasmal Armor (4 points) Merciless Repertoire (12 points) Necromancer Skills Master Bar (32 points) Bone Harvest (16 points) – Harvester of Death (1 point) – Dread (12 points) – Soul Harvest (12 points) Necrotic Edge (12 points) Devotion Same as Melee Frost Spellbreaker. Equipment Priorities Same as Melee Frost Spellbreaker, but cold damage should be prioritize instead of frostburn. How to play? Just like Melee Frost Spellbreaker, spam your skills including your main damage dealer Bone Harvest.
Melee Dual-Wield Pierce Infiltrator
An Infiltrator build that makes use of almost all pierce damage skills in arsenal for melee combat. This build has the survival advantage of having inquisitor seal that can benefit this character and its allies.
