i've been poking at this too long to care how visually appealing it is anymore. My headcanons for the main characters' sexualities, based on canon information! (has no bearing on ships.) Canon speculation below the cut.

marcille (bi): fascinated by romance and loves romance. we only see her show explicit interest in a male (fictional character (General Halleus from the book series she loves)), but i don't think she's fully straight.

falin (aro? ace? lesbian? genderqueer?): falin's only interest in relationships in canon is 'she considered accepting shuro's proposal because she was afraid nobody else would want her, but felt it'd be unfair to him because she had no feelings for him'. i consider whether she's aroace or a lesbian or maybe bi/pan, and she also seems like she might have some genderqueer feelings, based on some of her discomfort with her body and wearing certain types of femme clothing. (Also the fact that she‘s part male dragon.) Since she ends the story going on a journey for herself, it feels like she'll finally get the chance to figure out what she wants.

laios (pan, demi): he hasn't shown explicit interest in men, but similar to marcille, i don't feel he's fully straight. He’s aesthetically attracted to monsters, at the very least, so gender probably doesn’t factor in for him. romance/sex just don’t seem to be much of a high priority to him in general, but he did think his ex-fiance was cute and didn't seem uncomfortable with the idea of marriage (just seemed unhappy with being trapped in his hometown), so i feel like demisexuality fits him well.

About his succubus: He was very noticeably not stopped in his tracks by it like Chilchuck and Marcille, but that could possibly be because it just….looked exactly like Marcille, not an obvious fantasy. shuro: the token straight (in love with falin, asked her to marry him). i love you shuro <3 (but i can also see him being into men. there's no evidence to the contrary)

izutsumi: aroace. literally no question. her succubus is her mother.

sloane would like namari and chilchuck, for their work ethics, and if she knew more about laios and senshi she would respect them too but superficially theyre just the monster freaks. she would be nice to marcille and falin. i think chilchuck would respect her back, and is surprised she seems to understand already hes not a 10 year old. namari would blush and sloane would carry her away.

fry would be kind of mad that theres a wizard prodigy thats taking all of beryls attention but he would be too busy talking to laios and senshi about monsters. he uses their ingredients in his potions so he needs experts that can tell him the best way to harvest. handsome experts. just sitting there smiling while they explain something for 90 minutes. he would like falin and marcille too regardless. he would happily invite marcille on a shopping trip. and talk shop about magic. i think falin would like him most though, because hes silly.

billy would be intimidated by such a large and effective group, but probabably get along with the other dungeon dweller senshi. they would also really like namari for other reasons. theyd be ok with chilchuck but i think he can sense/see that theyre living in the pits + like it and also like to rip people off so chilchuck wouldnt be a fan. laios would be interested in the were-rat thing if they decided to talk about it and idk how billy would feel. not bad but not loving it. id say senshi also thinks theyre a child but they look so rough he probably thinks their either a sickly teen or a sickly adult. either way hes giving them soup

Red Dragon Part 2!

This one was also overall good, great performances all around, beautiful animation by Trigger. Sorry this is going up so late!

More thoughts:

They did not put in the continuation of the Namari, Kiki and Kaka resurrection office scene here like we thought they might... So why did they have the scene with Namari at all??? Instead of wasting that time to show that Namari... doesn't know Falin's age, and that Falin's body isn't in the office (we already knew this) they could have instead shown Namari interacting with Kiki and Kaka? Learning their story? Telling her own? Literally anything else. They included this scene but didn't do ANY of the most important parts (explaining details of how resurrection works) and instead left something that is mostly unimportant... So weird.

I know in the previous episode I complained about the lack of the skull shot, where Laios pulls Falin's skull out of the hair mat and it looks like a baby's head coming out of a vaginal opening… But in this episode they made the opening in the dragon's body behind Falin look like a vagina instead, so maybe they were trying to make up for it lol.

Wish they'd left in Chilchuck and Laio's brief conversation about if there's any way for them to profit off of the dragon's body. They mention Laios' savings, but it would have been nice to establish more firmly that Laios and party *make a living* off of the dungeon and that not having anything (treasure, monster bodies) to bring back is a big problem. Going into the dungeon is a JOB and they are not doing it very well!

(This will be important later to understand what the hell Kabru's deal is (ie: laios' dungeon behavior is illogical because he's not making money by going in, so why is he going into the dungeon?), so lack of clarity on the subject is unfortunate.)

I wish there was some way for them to tweak the dark elf comment because anime onlies and people who only read the manga are now going to think dark elves (drow) exist in dungeon meshi. It would be really nice if the anime added something from the extra materials explaining that Chilchuck is just being racist and ignorant lmao and that's why Marcille's annoyed about it. Alas.

Interesting how The Bath Scene was changed. They turned the original mood from slightly menacing foreshadowing to much more cute and flirtatious. Marcille is blushing and tilting her head towards Falin now, leaning in... She looks much less tired, Falin's no longer looming over her, but at the same level as she is, and Marcille is looking directly in front of herself, instead of up at Falin. Also Marcille's hand is at a lower, more natural position for hand-holding... Not up by her face, like a defensive gesture.

I don't know if this is good or bad really, just different. I personally preferred the more ominous tone from the manga, where the shadow Falin cast was more obvious, and Falin was placed higher above Marcille and Marcille looking up at her.

Ep 2 was an episode centered on them both that had the "Magic/Traps are my domain, don’t interfere!" parallel… And now with ep 3 we’re back to them being haters together. That’s her emotional support man

In ep 4, it doesn’t show well with a screenshot but when Senshi talks about his unmanned vegetable stand with a treasure chest, while in the manga Marcille and Chilchuck both think the same thing, "That’s why that treasure chest akways had money in it…", but in the anime instead they literally finish each other’s thought. Talk about being on the same wavelength.

Ep 5 is a marchil goldmine actually, it showcases perfectly how much of a package deal they are lol. Always sticking close to each other. Glancing at each other during meals… They literally nod at each other before they try a bite to steel themselves. They exchange a serious thoughtful glance when Laios talks about Falin truly being gone atm. They argue a bit but they go right back to sitting right next to each other after the meal <3 My god I can’t deal with them they are so…… "Hate this bitch, not my friend" 3 secs later "Heyy bestie!!" I already posted a screenshot from the trailer of when Chil had his head on his knees sitting next to her, but after seeing episode 5 I think it’s a fun and interesting trend to notice that they sit next to each other way unnecessarily close wow. They continue to banter a ton, she continues to be very casual with touch, and they’re really cute! I love just how much Marcille blushed damn- It’s really cute too when you remember with the bicorn chapter that Chilchuck teases Marcille BECAUSE he enjoys getting a rise out of her, flustering her and seeing her reactions. I support the teasing -> laughing because her reaction is over the top all-Chilchuck economy. Also she apologizes for having let him go alone and be gone for so long by helping him with sewing his cowl… Cuties

She looked so happy when he opened up about his age!… And then seemed… Disappointed? When he "truly was just a kid". "So you really are a kid! for chilchuck, laios, mickbell and namari, how about reader giving them surprise kisses on the cheek or top of their heads when they pass them by or if they are distracted somehow?

that sounds positively delightful id love to do some of these.

Every time you pass by chilchuck will jump in surprise as he whirls around and bats away at you with the map or some piece of clothe to try and shoe you away.

He gets so grumpy when you kiss him on top of the head, it makes him feel short. and he will pout for the next half hour as you chuckle.

Secretly he likes it but will never admit it.

Laios is excited for them, each time you kiss his cheek he ends up blushing and smiling. He will chuckle and give you a small hug if he can or even thank you for the kiss.

Dont be surprised though if when you surprise him with a kiss he quickly grabs you and pulls you into a great big hug lifting you off the ground. Mans a hugger after all.

He will also do the same to you, kissing your cheek or top of head whenever your distracted. He loves showing affection to you after all.

Much like chilchuck he will throw a fit whenever you do this saying how you should show him some respect! Kuro nodding in agreement.

However when you dont do it he looks over confused and a little upset, he secretly loves them but cant let anyone know this. So when you stop doing it for awhile he gets upset about it and looks at you with a face of "where are my kisses?"

From then on you know whenever he throws a fit at your kisses that he doesnt mean it and you sometimes even see him give you a quick little wink.

Each time you kiss her head or cheek she gets all flustered, the way he face turns so red it almost turns the same shade as her hair.

She will start stuttering and get so flustered she can barely speak, her voice even cracking as she asks whats the big idea.

Of course if anyone pokes fun of how she reacts to your kisses she gets mad and tells them to shut up, putting an arm around you grumbling how its not her fault your so cute
