Watabe Yunichi  A Criminal Investigation
Text by Titus Boeder
Editions Xavier Barral / Le Bal, Paris 2011, 100 pages,  70 black-and-white photographs,  28,9 x 21 cm., Hardcover,  Text in French and English ISBN  9782915173826

From the publisher: "On 14 January 1958, the disfigured and amputated body of a man was discovered near Lake Sembako in Japan. Two investigators from Tokyo came to help out the local police in order to resolve what at first appeared to be a banal case, but which proved to be more complex. For the first time, a photographer was authorised to accompany the police to document the investigation. Watabe followed the inspector as he questioned witnesses (workers in a tannery factory, local police officers etc.) and pounded the streets of the most insalubrious neighbourhoods in Tokyo--its bars, bridges, alleyways and hospitals--in search of the killer. Watabe's images record much more than simply a police investigation, they reveal Tokyo in the 1950s in a way that has rarely been shown."

Jenna Coleman and Tahar Rahim in The Serpent episode 7.
Once again, I will write my thoughts about this episode below. Spoilers!
There is a nice contrast at the start and end of this episode, with Marie leaving a shower in a luxurious Paris hotel at the start, and standing in the rain in a Mumbai slum at the end.
Herman is finally successful in getting the world to pay attention, by contacting a newspaper, and getting in contact with Interpol. After the finding of her diary, Herman found out her real name. Due to her frequent calls back home to Quebec, Herman also found out where she currently was. And so the net is starting to close in on them throughout this episode.
Alain and Marie at first believe that they don’t need to have the slightest worry in the world. But Marie’s dream of starting a new life with Charles who she hopes would renounce his old ways, starts cracking early on.
When they visit Charles’ mum, as Marie had been looking forward to for a while, she instead learns of the deep dislike they have for each other, and Charles’ mum’s warning for her. This causes Marie to start asking more questions, and dig up what she had wanted to bury earlier on, despite Charles’ insistance that she forget the past. But now that she wanted to start a family and begin anew, she realised that she did want to know who Charles really was, and what really happened back in Thailand, whether she really wanted to have his children, or not.
They are confronted with the Thai newspaper stories about them when they try to sell their gems to Boeders, and Marie only barely keeps her composure, but this clearly starts worrying her a lot.
She starts asking more questions, but wants to know for sure, knowing, but not wanting to admit to herself, that Charles is lying to her. So she goes back to Charles’ mum, alone. And this is where it all goes wrong for Marie. Within a few minutes, her dream world she constructed for herself, breaks down completely.
She finds out that Charles had been constantly lying to her, that Juliette is still alive, and not dead as he had told her. Charles’ mum basically tells her to not believe anything he says, and to understand that though it might seem as though he loves her, he doesn’t actually love her.
And as she leaves her house, she sees the newspapers everywhere, that are proclaiming Charles and herself to be worldwide wanted murderers. And so she confronts Charles, who finally tells her the truth, but manipulates her once again. Jenna brilliantly portrays this devastation of Marie of being called a murderer, even though that was only Charles’ doing, that she was never directly involved in. How she fears the consequences, and once again is manipulated by Charles to believe that he is her only chance of escaping the death penalty. And so they flee, from Paris to Mumbai, in what seems like a desperate, if pointless attempt to flee the net rapidly closing in on them.
The amount of development Marie goes through in The Serpent is really exceptional, and it wouldn’t be nearly as moving and impressive if it weren’t for Jenna Coleman’s incredible portrayal of her, bringing out the full spectrum of emotion. It is this fantastic performance that makes you despite, but at the same time really feel sorry for her.
We all know that Jenna’s outfits in The Serpent are absolutely incredible. But in this episode, the producers took it up by another notch. Jenna wears her most stylish outfits ever, and without paying attention to the plot, one might think that this episode is nothing but a Jenna Coleman fashion show. Her outfits here are really beautiful, excpetionally stylish, and suit her perfectly.

For many of us, uncertainty and a lack of control trigger feelings of unsafety. Yet in the face of multiple pandemics and an explosive political season, these difficult emotions are an all too familiar baseline. More so, when we are surrounded by escalating risks and panic — ranging from fear for the health of ourselves and loved ones, financial uncertainty, and social unrest — it becomes increasingly difficult to be fully aware of the toll of these threats to the safety of our health, financial well-being, and community on our bodies and minds.
For anyone with a trauma history, including survivors of sexual assault, these layers of distress awaken the imprints of sexual trauma on the body and mind. Molly Boeder Harris, Founder and Director of The Breathe Network, describes how destabilizing this experience can be:
“...some of our bodies are consciously and unconsciously remembering past states of threat, overwhelm, and inescapable attack. This remembering may set off a number of internal physiological alarms, thereby causing survival patterning to re-emerge.”
Whether you are a survivor, advocate, educator, or loved one, reflecting and noticing your thoughts, feelings, and body sensations is a gateway to self-care. For many of us, stress pulls us in the opposite direction, dampening our awareness of our bodies and breath and making it difficult to stay grounded and mindful.
