I pray "We are Magical Boys" never gets an official english release because it would instantly be turned into a political shit storm.

Honestly that is my BIGGEST fear. That if it got an official localization, some shitty fuckass "politically motivated" localizer like JelloApocalypse would get the task, and they'd fucking turn all the boys trans or some shit like that. Which COMPLETELY negates the entire POINT of the fucking manga, which is confronting the concepts of traditional masculinity - naw let's CONFORM to those concepts of traditional masculinity by saying boys AREN'T allowed to be cute and dress up in girlyness, no no no they HAVE to be GIRLS because ONLY GIRLS are allowed to wear girly clothes and be cute. Fucking 1920s ass conservative rhetoric wearing a pink and blue flag.

Thinking about how those bastards ruined Bridget and that they might try to do the same thing to Bokura wa Mahou Shounen legitimately terrifies me.

I wouldn't care what the fandom does. People are gonna be stupid about the series no matter what. But the thought of the official localization rewriting the series to insert trendy western gender politics, under some xenophobic ass excuse of japanese culture being "problematic" or some shit, is what makes me feel like it isn't worth the risk.

Like seriously, the manga is ALREADY perfectly tackling the topics of gender AS IS it doesn't need to be changed to fuck around with the main characters gender identities just because that's a hot button issue in the west right now.

I'm like legitimately taken aback that a manga that's targeted to young boys would be depicted in this way and explore the themes that it does One of the characters had imposter syndrome But also that chapter was about his friend noticing how uncomfortable and upset at the party he was and deciding to sacrifice his own enjoyment of the party to leave with his friend in order to make him feel better The story is literally about the main character having the emotional intelligence to notice something his friend was struggling with and deciding to set his own desires aside for the sake of him

Almost every conflict in the story is like that Just flawed characters and emotional interpersonal dynamics There's even a chapter where the main character struggles with insecurity because his dad is like "muh manlyness" and he thinks he'd be like ashamed of him for being a magical boy And it's like whoa literally the manga is exploring toxic masculinity Wtf

This is relatable and important messages for young boys who might read this

The series is perfect AS IS and deserves to be ACCURATELY AND AUTHENTICALLY TRANSLATED into english. But I fear from the bottom of my heart that whoever might get hired to do an official localization would take it as an opportunity to REWRITE the story to make it into something it isn't. Because the story they'd rewrite it to would be "more progressive" by whatever insane fucked up standard they decide determines that. Better for it to never get officially localized than risk that.

I was afraid it was going to be pervy but instead it's just extremely trans in a really really well done way, and it's making me emotional it's so good you have no idea. It's gender as fuck.

A new chapter of Bokura wa Mahou Shounen finally scanlated after more than 2 years! I'm so happy to see this series back, I missed it so much.

I love this. Kaito doesn't knock the mass produced girlinesses, but what makes his Thrilling Pink girliness special is that it comes from his own heart, his own confidence in his girliness. He may still be embarrassed about the frilly skirt, but he's proud of his own cuteness and the strength it gives him. He loves being Thrilling Pink, and he wants to go back to being Thrilling Pink so bad.

And look how happy he is when he can!

I love this series so much, it's so cute and sweet!

I was sad to read in the afterword/credits page that the one who translated this chapter passed away last year though. Rest in peace.

Bokura wa Mahou Shounen Vol. 2 Thoughts

Chapter 7 hit really hard as a transfem narrative - especially the fear that your male friends will treat you differently after transitioning; that was real personally affecting. But it spoils all that with its ending. The affirmation that Thrilling Pink, the feminine-presenting persona, *has* to be perfect in order to maintain respect, and that that's the only barrier to revealing Kaito's other side is... well, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

I like the redemption granted to Lofty Purple's femininity. Ch 10 makes it clear that the issue with him was his priority on attention over actually helping people, instead of a problem inherent to her style of girlyness.

Hello, fellow Bokumaho fan. I think that it is due for an anime adaptation. Do you have any dream studios, directors, seiyuu, singers for the OP/ED, etc. that you would like to see?

I would be over the moon if they did an anime for Bokura wa Mahou Shounen! And if it got an anime that would raise the likelyhood of the manga getting an official localization too (though I would be very very concerned about the possibility of a loose canon translator rewriting the story as part of the localization to turn the story into something it's not).

My blue sky hopes for an animation studio would be Kyoto Animation, though I don't know if the series is really up their alley. I think they could absolutely nail the art style though and they obviously always put out exceptionally high quality shows. I also think Trigger or Madhouse could do keep the art style of the manga while bringing animation to it, though those would be less conventional picks.

For more realistic choices I think it'd be REALLY funny if Shaft did it. The guys behind Madoka Magica doing a much more optimistic mahou show but that still has a twist to it just strikes me as appropriate and ironically hilarious. The most boring choice would probably be Toei considering they also do Sailor Moon and PreCure, and since I doubt Bokumaho would be a 52 episode series the quality would probably remain consistent under them.

Beyond that I wouldn't have any hopes or expectations. I'd just want the series to be faithfully adapted by people who appreciate and respect the intentions of the original story. But voice actor wise I would imagine it'd be, like, 99% a female cast all things considered lol.
