Spotlight: Joanne Kyger

I found this book while looking through the stacks for something completely different and noticed the illustration on the cover and decided to investigate further. Sadly the cover has a big ol' call number sticker smack-dab over the title, but the book is Trip Out and Fall Back by California native beat/Black Mountain/New York School/uncategorizable poet Joanne Kyger. It was published in 1974 by Arif Press in Berkeley, California and features drawings by American artist and curator Gordon Baldwin, who was part of the same community as Kyger in Bolinas, California.

The book is a "notebook-like poetic travelogue composed of social, geographic, temporal, and spiritual movements" following a cross-country journey from California to Brooklyn. The poems are big and small at once, capturing moments and movements under the sprawling skies of the United States. Kyger, who practiced Buddhism, said the following of her own work in a 2005 artist's statement:

"The shape of the day, the words of the moment, what's happening around me in the world of interior and exterior space—these are my writing concerns. Living in a semi-rural environment the cast of characters in my poems are often the quail, deer, raccoons, coyote bush, oaks, the ocean, the weather, and a few treasured friends. All are equally valid in the environment of place. Some talk more than others. My attention to writing is a daily practice, which then builds an accumulative narrative of chronology. Which ends up as the story of one's life. An historical sense of 'self,' breathing and experiencing what is common to every human—the local, the ordinary, the non-motivated sense of just 'being.' One is also aware of the accumulations of lineage of all those writing persons who have come before and to whom one owes the inheritance of this written moment."

MICHAEL GREGORY

Born in 1955 in Los Angeles, CA, he received his BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1980. Previously living and working in Bolinas, California, Gregory has been fascinated with the study of old barns and silos. While he paints them from his imagination, the barns often appear so true to life and so rich in detail that they can almost be construed as photographic in nature. He works from a limited palette of whites, greys and blacks to create an often brooding landscape that invites contemplation. The barns dominate the space they are set in, commanding attention as they freeze in time that rare light before a storm.

Does art make a difference?

Aw, sure. Of course there are degrees of extremity to the potential change that art can effect, depending on how many people are able to engage with it. The Beatles made a huge difference in the world. But Henry Darger, Jeff McKissack, Karen Dalton, Pauline Oliveros, Kenneth Patchen – there are so many folks who have made great art and not gotten massively famous for it, yet I think there are all sorts of ways their work informs and shapes other people’s work, and brains, and decisions.

Should politics and art mix?

Well, everything mixes, the New Statesman! That’s like asking if a knee-reflex hammer and a quadriceps tendon should “mix”.

Is your work for the many or for the few?

That’s for the many/few to say. I just crank out the hot jams.

If you were world leader, what would be your first law?

Gravity. I feel like we need to tighten up the constitutional protections that particular law enjoys. It’s a ticking time bomb, if you ask me.

Who would be your top advisers?

Cute angel on one shoulder, cute devil on the other.

What, if anything, would you censor?

Maybe we could all agree to not bust each other’s chops all cut-dang day.

If you had to banish one public figure, who would it be?

Don’t know, banishment might be a little extreme, but I’d sure like to take that Stephen Hawking dude down a notch or two. Right? Are you with me?

What are the rules that you live by?

Basically, “bros before hos”. I feel like if you stay true to that, everything else just kind of falls into place.

Do you love your country?

Chicano Eats: Recipes from My Mexican-American Kitchen by Esteban Castillo

Esteban Castillo grew up in Santa Ana, California, where more than three-quarters of the population is Latino. Because Mexican food was the foundation of his childhood, he was surprised to see recipes for dishes on popular food blogs that were anything but the traditional meals he grew up eating. He was inspired to create the blog, Chicano Eats, to showcase his love for design, cooking, and culture and provide a space for authentic Latino voices, recipes, and stories to be heard. Building on his blog, Chicano Eats is a bicultural and bilingual cookbook that includes 85 traditional and fusion Mexican recipes as gorgeous to look at as they are sublime to eat. Chicano cuisine is Mexican food made by Chicanos (Mexican Americans) that has been shaped by the communities in the U.S. where they grew up. It is Mexican food that bisects borders and uses a group of traditional ingredients—chiles, beans, tortillas, corn, and tomatillos—and techniques while boldly incorporating many exciting new twists, local ingredients, and influences from other cultures and regions in the United States.
