“Salvation cannot be lost; like oh I dropped my salvation.. oh I sinned too much I lost it. News flash: Pro-Tip Salvation wasn’t performance based to begin with! That which cannot be obtained by moral perfection cannot be lost by moral imperfection! It has nothing to do with merit and performance. You don’t drop it, you don’t lose it-“ -Dr. Michael S. Heiser. Thoughts?
Heiser seems to have completely misunderstood the nature of the relationship between faith and works, and thus the very nature of salvation itself. of course works cannot gain you salvation, because that is not how a court works. if a dude paid for five hospitals to be built, but then killed a kid, would his philanthropy justify the murder? Of course not. He would go to court, and if the judge is just he will sentence the murderer to prison, as that is the just punishment for his crime. The only way for this to be avoided is if the family of the deceased decide not to prosecute, an unprecedented act of forgiveness which cannot be earned. That is what salvation is: forgiveness.
so what are works then? works are the outward sign of a penitent heart. Think of Ebeneezer Scrooge from A Christmas Carol. A man who inflicted misery on others through his apathy and greed for decades suddenly one day turns around and starts helping people. Do his works earn him salvation? NO. what they do is they SHOW FORTH HIS DESIRE FOR FORGIVENESS. we know from the story that he has had a change of heart and wants to be forgiven for the evil he did, but that change of heart would have been empty and meaningless if it was not followed up with a genuine desire to make up for what he did.
Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 7:21
NOW WE GET TO "ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED". I LOATH this abomination of a doctrine; it goes beyond the ignorant claim of "faith alone" to become something truly monstrous. It implies that if you are forgiven once, you will stay forgiven, EVEN IF YOU CEASE REPENTING. If the murderer I described before got forgiven. Then he kills again, then asks for forgiveness again, and yet again the family forgives him. and he keeps doing it, each time repenting and each time inexplicably being forgiven. But what if, one day, he says to himself "they already forgave me once, obviously I don't need to ask them for forgiveness again. once forgiven, always forgiven after all!" salvation isn't an automated script which deletes your crimes as you commit them; you must ask, and ask, and ask. we are human. generally speaking this means that we will always sin over and over again, and God in his infinite mercy will always forgive us IF WE ASK WITH FULL INTENT OF MAKING AMENDS.
"ONCE SAVED ALWAYS SAVED" turns God into an automated script which deletes are sins passively as we commit them. It makes Him into a machine rather than a Person. it dehumanizes (dedeifies?) God Himself. It is a blasphemy.
also, as a historian I have a bone to pick with this foul invention of the human mind. This belief is an outgrowth of traditional Calvinist theology which asserts both positive and negative predestination. Do you know what that means? it means people are predestined both to Heaven and to Hell. this is literally the ONLY context in which the phrase "Once saved always saved" is internally consistent. But there are two problems with predestination, one historical and the other theological.
The first problem is that during the age of exploration it was used by protestant groups to justify atrocities. two examples come to mind. First, the original reasoning behind adopting the slave trade in many protestant circles was that if christians are predestined to heaven, then God would not let a true Christian commit a truly evil act (though he may permit them to sin). Obviously, if he can predestine someone to heaven, then he can also predestine them to avoid true evil. but then they saw that members of their own congregations were slave traders and slave owners, and seemed to both be incredibly pious in Church and incredibly cruel at work. They reasoned that God would not let such pious people do such things if they were truly evil, so therefore slavery and slave trade was not evil. this reasoning persisted for some time until sensible protestants like John Brown called bullshit and decided to do something about the hypocrisy. when american protestants originally began attempting to evangelize native americans and the like, they tried for a couple months or so and then just gave up on any given tribe. the reason for this was that the saw that the natives did not convert right away, and so reasoned that they were predestined to hell. they then used this reasoning to justify shoving them off their land to make room for "God-fearing" protestant settlers.
the OTHER issue is specifically with negative predestination. negative predestination means that some people are predestined to hell. this is different from saying that God knew they were going to hell. God knows everything from the beginning to the end of time. rather, negative predestination means that God made some people, actually a very large number of people, and then proceeded to MAKE them go to hell. he DESTINED them to do evil, SET THEM ON THE PATH TO HELL. this is the equivalent of building a sentient robot and programming him to find the nearest meat grinder and throw himself into it. don't get me wrong, God could do this if he wanted to; he can do anything. BUT HE DOESN'T WANT TO BECAUSE THAT WOULD BE SCREWED UP AND DOWNRIGHT EVIL. If God's will defines what is good and what is evil, then God doing something truly evil like this would simply be contrary to his nature.
so yeah, those are my thoughts on that quote and the philosophy that spawned it.

Title: The Fay
Written by: @daalseth
Deep in the forest lived a fay. Older than time, but as young as spring she had known every tree since it was a seed. She was the soul of the forest. When she was sad, the forest mourned, when she was happy the forest was bright, and when she was angry, well you didn’t want to be in the forest when the fay was angry.
The fay came across a fallen tree. It was lying on the ground, but it hadn’t blown down. It was cut off square at the base. Then she saw another. There was a clearing, a whole section of her forest that was dead and many of the fallen were missing. As the fay passed over she was horrified. What could have caused this?
Soon she came upon the camp of men where they were feeding the dying trees into grinders. The fay could hear the trees, still alive scream as they were shredded into wood chips. The fay’s horror grew deeper and she went to the men to plead for them to stop. Beg them to not kill the trees, her brothers and sisters. But as soon as she appeared the men grew angry at her interference. They yelled at her, threw things at her, they even tried to shoot at her.
The fay fled into the depths of the forest. She was heartbroken and began to cry. When she cried the rain began to fall. So deep was her sorrow that the rain came down in torrents and began to flood the blasted land. The fay went back to the camp. She saw that the men had stopped shredding trees. Now they were battling the waters. They had used machines to push earth up to block the water. The fay noticed that some metal barrels had been broken by the machine and were spilling their poison into the water. The water flowed across the clearing into the forest. Wherever the poison flowed, everything died. Fish, mouse, moss, and tree all died in agony.
The fay grew angry. The men could see fire in her eyes, and sparks illuminated her hair. The rain turned to thunder and bolts of lightning rained down upon the camp. They struck the shredder, and the building, and the piles of shredded trees, and the lightning struck the men, it ESPECIALLY struck the men. Electric hands reached into even the deepest hiding place to grab the terrified men.
Soon it was done. The fay came out and passed among the charred remains. She smiled a grim smile. The rain stopped and the sun came out. She was pleased. Though the fay mourned her lost friends, she knew the forest would heal with time.
At last she came to one man still alive. With his last breath he pleaded for help. She looked at him with cold eyes and turned away.
She was the fay of the forest and men were not her concern.
Title: “About Danny’s First Time”
Written by: @evanthenerd83
It was wonderful.
It was also kinda, sorta, a little gross.
There were a few glaring issues. Primarily the question of how Danny would get into the appropriate position, and how she would get into hers.
The swamp wasn’t all that big. It wasn’t even a swamp. The girl sat in a rather small pool.
Said pool was, of course, filled with water. And said water contained muck, yuck, and other things generally considered unpleasantly…  sticky. Twigs and fallen leaves floated along the surface—
No. Not floated, exactly. They were stuck on the surface, a skin not unlike jellied jam.
Which meant the girl could only sit on her knees, or lay on her stomach with her head propped up in her arms.
Danny particularly liked that position. Her skin was green, lighter splotches running down her neck and her arms and her spine. Her hair spilled over bare shoulders.
And it also made certain things much more… pronounced. Danny felt his blood rushing down.
The girl tried to explain why she couldn’t leave the pool. Something about an ancient curse and her mother. A woman who, as she so elegantly put it, hated her guts.
“All of my sisters are much more, you know. Beautiful. Human… er? More human? Humanoid?”
Danny didn’t care if her sisters were literal goddesses. They’d never compare to her. He pulled off his shirt, then threw it over his shoulder. The skull-and-crossbones printed on the front disappeared.
The girl blushed. An even darker shade of green filled her cheeks.
“Anyway, you’d be better off going to them. I don’t have, like, much experience with… you know… uh… physical stuff.”
Danny plunged into the pool. The water wasn’t cold. It wasn’t warm, either. It was nothingness.
The girl shifted in place, while Danny took her hand. It was only slightly warmer than the water, which surprised him.
He kissed it. “Neither do I.”
The girl stared, eyes wide. Then, she glanced down, at his bare chest. Then, up to his face. Then, down to his chest, again, and then—
“Oh, what the hell?”
Soggy lips met lips.
She laid back.
He leaned forward.
Calm hands clasped behind his neck.
Awkward hands panicked.
He grabbed the straps of her swamp-weed dress, the not-actually-fabric tearing apart, as easily as paper. Certain things were suddenly freed.
“Oh. Crap. Sorry—”
“Don’t be.”
Legs thin as twigs wrapped around his waist.
She undid the zipper to his jeans, yanking them down, discarding his underwear at the exact same time. Something else was suddenly freed.
“Now, let’s just… a little to the—”
“L-like that?”
“Oh! U-uh. Y-yeah.”
What happened next was kinda, sorta, a little gross.
But also… wonderful.
Title: “Sing Me Out a Storm”
Written by: @winterrose42
She couldn’t remember the last time it had rained this much.
Though she could only imagine the chaos that must be raging above the pond underwater it was as calm and serene as it had ever been. Idly, she swung her feet through the loose sand and reeds, blurring her vision with the silt she kicked up. That was just fine with her, there had never been much to see in her small abode to begin with. Sand and rocks worn smooth and sparkly lined to bottom, with the sides sloping up gently until they met the shore. She could swim from one end to another in about three minutes if she went slowly, and it was just deep enough that casual swimmers wandering in wouldn’t see her unless they knew to look. It was perfect.
Closing her eyes she sighed contently and stood her ears up just a little bit more to catch more of the soft pattering of rain that was still filling up her home at a slow and steady rate. The frogs had long stopped their evening croaking and she knew the few fish that lived here wouldn’t have a care that it was storming above their home. The pond hardly ever changed and when it did it simply meant there was a meal to be had, which was always fine with her.
Perking up she strained her ears as something new invaded her serenity. A low, mournful note drifted down to her slowly, draping itself around her shoulders and weighing them down with the burden it carried. Tears pricked her eyes as she pushed off from where she’d been sitting, intent on seeing what could make such heart jerking noises. Their voice picked up again, another long, drawn out note that was almost more moan than song. Curious and slightly concerned she drifted closer to the hunched figure. The song wrapped around her so slowly she hardly noticed it, pulling her along as gently as a suggestion with little intention beyond calling for aid. Closer and closer she came, reeds fanning out with her hair as she kept as low as she could with her eyes still above water, squinting through the storm to see clearer.
Quickly, so quickly even her natural instincts were too slow, the comforting net turned to one full of malice, her limbs cinched so close she could hardly breathe as she finally caught sight of the face of her entrancement. Cold eyes devoid of the emotion their owner had been singing peered at her viciously from under soaked bangs. The notes heightened in pitch, rocking up to a scream as her own voice stuck fast in her throat. Deep in her bones she knew a siren was not meant to be trapped this way; enchanting one wasn’t something she had ever heard of, but feeling the last tendrils of the song fade away into a cold nothing she knew it didn’t matter.
She couldn’t remember the last time it had rained this much.

We’d been traveling for little over two days when we found her. Cass had insisted on taking breaks over our journey, and, with some persistence, I was able to convince Sage to go along with her idea. The lake she’d found was far enough from the path that no one would notice us but close enough that we wouldn’t get lost. Those were Sage’s requirements, our quest would remain as secret as possible. They said word would travel fast about three teenagers going off to battle an evil force. Of course, they were probably right. It was raining when we finally reached the lake. Sage set about surveying the area, making sure nobody was around, and Cass began digging through a basket for some food, leaving me with nothing to do. I decided to go down to the lake to get some water. I couldn’t hear quite right over the rain, but I could’ve sworn I heard crying as I walked up to the water.
When I reached the shore, I was certain I that’s what I was hearing. I looked out over the lake, and that’s when I saw her. She didn’t look like the monsters Sage warned us about, but she didn’t look human either. I was so entranced by who she was or what she could be that I didn’t hear Cass and Sage approach me. Cass opened her mouth to speak, when the creature in the lake snapped her head to us.
“Who are you?” She sounded almost human. If I hadn’t been looking at her, I would have assumed she was. Sage and Cass immediately started arguing over whether or not we could trust her. Not that that was surprising. They argued over everything. The creature and I held eye contact, unnoticed by the others. Eventually I spoke, silencing my friends’ argument. “I’m Oliver. Who are you?”
“Nimue.” For a second her tears stopped, and it seemed as though a venom overtook her. “They destroyed my village.” The moment passed and she was crying again.
“Who?” Sage glared at Cass as she asked.
“I don’t know. Darkness started pouring down into the water, and I heard voices and then nothing. When I woke up, I was the only survivor.”
“Sound exactly like what we’re after,” Sage muttered. “It’s too much of a coincidence.”
Cass slapped them. “No, it’s not.”
I stepped into the lake and offered my hand to Nimue. “If I’m right, we’re already looking for the thing that destroyed your village. How would you like to join us in stopping it?”
Before Sage could yell at me, Nimue nodded and grabbed my hand. She climbed out of the water and became the fourth member of our quest.

Notes to Sean Bonney (1969-2019)
The great ruse of our political epoch: Cameron, Osborne and Clegg, and their crows in press, scorched a set of oppositions in the minds of the people. The whole of society encapsulated in an image of “workers versus shirkers”, “strivers versus skivers.” The great tragedy of our political epoch: the Labour movement, the left, and the social democrats took the bait of these laminated ghouls. They responded simply by saying that there were no skivers: instead there was a worthy working class, labouring away ever harder, and getting ever poorer. They said the whole thing was a myth, that the shirkers were a phantom, a chimera, a scapegoat, an image invented by evil overlords to turn the working class against itself, leaving it prone to the ideologies of reaction. The labour movement talked instead only about the working poor, or the unemployed who wanted always to get back to a good job, on a good wage, forever and ever.
Few resisted the ruse, but Sean Bonney was one of them. Perhaps it was because Sean himself was a skiver, a drunk, a scoundrel, a villain, an addict, a down-and-out, a fuck up. More likely it was because of his deep political intuition and understanding. For him, the politics of class warfare was never about worthiness; it was never about what the working class deserve at the end of a hard day’s work, but instead its crucible was the hatred of the social conditions that pummelled people, silenced them, boxed them in, boxed them up, oppressed them, made them suffer. This politics was uncompromising because it understood that any compromise was a failure: there is no weekend that redeems the week, no pension that makes good on the life wrecked by the conformity and unfreedom of work.
I like to think of Sean as the thing that terrified those Tories most, as one of those beautiful creatures who so absolutely threatened them that they had to transfigure him into a phantom. His poetry too was one with this politics in this. Every line is written in solidarity with the shirking class, a class whose underground history crawls and stretches backwards, a perpetual dance, an unending squall, as anonymous as it is enormous. If Sean was a skiver he was also always hard at work, undertaking an immense labour of compression, in order to make that history heard. And this furious labour was quick and angular, because it always came with some sense that history was, already, ending. As a singular voice that resisted the ruse, his writing is one of the most important political efforts of our time.
o scroungers, o gasoline there’s a home for you here there’s a room for your things me, I like pills / o hell.
*** Since hearing of Sean’s death I have been thinking a lot about what I learnt from him. Learning is maybe a strange way to look at it. Because Sean’s poetry was not really so complicated. He stated unambiguous truths that we all knew and understood. Just like Brecht’s dictum in praise of communism: “It’s reasonable, and everyone understands it, it’s easy […] it is the simplicity, that’s hard to achieve.” This was the plane on which we met. All of us, Sean’s friends, comrades, loves, beloveds, others we did not know who all were invited, all in this common place where we know how simple these truths are, even if none of us were able to express them with such concision as Sean – even if we were all somehow less rehearsed, less prepared, less audacious. And suddenly I know it was a common place he made, wretched and hilarious.
*** So communism is simple. But running beneath all of Sean’s work was an unassuming argument, from which I have learned so much. Although argument was not his mode – his poems were always doing something, accusing but never prosecuting – an argument is there, even if it was exposed as a thesis in its own right. It is something so simple, easy, and so obvious that it barely seems worth saying. Sean’s poems made an argument for the enduring power of French symbolism – for a power that surged through history in the spirit of that movement. No surprise for a poet who rewrote Baudelaire and Rimbaud. But constantly a surprise to a world that thought that mode already dead, a world no longer animated by the literary symbol, nor transfixed by the resurrection any such symbols could herald. His writing followed the traces of this hyperhistory that wrapped around the world and back, from the high culture of decolonial revolutionism back in to cosmopolitan centre where bourgeois savages feast greedily on expropriated wares; into the dark sociality of the prison, and out again into every antisocial moment that we call “society”; sometimes making the earth small within a frozen cosmos ringing out noise as signal to nobody and everyone; sometimes bringing the whole cosmos in crystalline shape (sometimes perfect, sometimes fractured) as the sharpest interruption within the world - every poem charting a history stretched taut between uprisings and revolts. He knew the rites of symbols, the continuing practices with which their political power could be leveraged.
Sean was one of the few untimely symbolists of our time. His poems are full of these things: bombs, mouths, wires, bones, birds, walls, suns, etc - never quite concepts, never quite images, never quite objects, but pieces of the world to be taken up and arranged, half exploded, into accusations; treasured as partial and made for us to take as our own, a heritage of our own destruction, at once ready at hand, and scattered to the peripheries on a map of the universe, persistently spiralling, in points, back to the centre, some no place.
But if Sean was a symbolist, if he was attentive to its fugitive history, a slick and secret tradition of the oppressed, then this was also a symbolism without any luxuriant illusion. It is a symbolism in which all knowingness has been supplanted with fury and its movements. Sean’s poems are spleen without ideal. They have nothing of the pointed, almost screaming, eternal sarcasm of Baudelaire when he ever again finds the body of his beautiful muse as white and lifeless cold marble, utterly indifferent to the desirous gaze. There is no such muse, no callous petrified grimace, half terrified half laughing, ancient enough to unseat Hellenism itself - although there is beauty still but it exists otherwise, amid a crowd, darkened and lively. When I think of Sean’s monumental work I imagine an enormous bas-relief of black polished marble jutting out from some monstrously disproportioned body, angled between buildings. This great slab flashing black in the white noise of the city. This great slab as populous as the world. Flashing black and seen with the upturned gaze. There is no oppression without this terrified vision that sees in ever new sharpness the oppressor.
When you go to sleep, my gloomy beauty, below a black marble monument, when from alcove and manor you are reduced to damp vault and hollow grave; when the stone—pressing on your timorous chest and sides already lulled by a charmed indifference—halts your heart from beating, from willing, your feet from their bold adventuring, when the tomb, confidant to my infinite dream (since the tomb understands the poet always), through those long nights in which slumber is banished, will say to you: "What does it profit you, imperfect courtisan, not to have known what the dead weep for?" —And the worm will gnaw at your hide like remorse.
*** I haven’t explained what I learnt. I ask the question, What does it mean to find the late nineteenth century stillborn into the twenty-first? Why should these febrile years, from 1848 to the Commune have been so important? What was Sean leveraging when he recast our world with this moment of literary and political history? And what was he leveraging it against? I have a sense that what was important to Sean was a sense of mixedness. There were those who would read these years, after the defeat of revolution, as a dreadful winter of the world. There were those who saw only society in decline. “Jeremiads are the fashion”, Blanqui would say while counselling civil war. And then there were those for whom arcades first provided an extravagant ecstacy of distraction and glitz. These were the years of monstrocity, from Maldoror to Das Kapital. These years of the great machines that chewed up humans and spat out their remains across the city, of great humans who chewed up machines and made language anew. These years in which the fury of defeat burnt hot. These years of illumination. These years where gruesome metallic grinding and factory fire met the dandy. Few eras have been so mixed, so utterly undecided. No era so perfect to carve out the truly Dickensian physiognomy of Iain Duncan Smith. This was neither the stage of tragedy nor comedy, but of frivolous wickedness and hilarious turpitude. The world made into a barb, and no-one quite knowing who is caught on it. The great progress. The great stupidity. Street life. The symbol belonging to this undecided realm.
Marx was famously dismissive of that “social scum” the Lumpenproletariat, who he described at the beginning of this period as “vagabonds, discharged soldiers, discharged jailbirds, escaped galley slaves, swindlers, mountebanks, lazzaroni, pickpockets, tricksters, gamblers, maquereaux, brothel keepers, porters, literati, organ grinders, ragpickers, knife grinders, tinkers, beggars — in short, the whole indefinite, disintegrated mass, thrown hither and thither, which the French call la bohème.” Marx saw in these figures, in their Bonapartist, reactionary form, a bourgeois consciousness ripped from its class interest and thus nourished by purest political ideology. But if he could excoriate the drunkenness of beggars, Marx failed to appreciate its complement: the intoxication of sobriety of the working classes, the stupefaction in methodism, their imagined glory in progress. Wine, as the beggars already knew, was the only salve to the social anaesthetic of worthiness and the idiotic faith in work.
If Sean were here I’d want to talk to him about this learning in relation to a fragment by Benjamin, which he wrote as he thought about the world of Baudelaire; this world of mixedness of the city constructed and exploded, and the people within it subject to the same motion:
During the Baroque, a formerly incidental component of allegory, the emblem, undergoes extravagant development. If, for the materialist historian, the medieval origin of allegory still needs elucidation, Marx himself furnishes a clue for understanding its Baroque form. He writes in Das Kapital (Hamburg, 1922), vol. 1, p. 344: "The collective machine ... becomes more and more perfect, the more the process as a whole becomes a continuous one — that is, the less the raw material is interrupted in its passage from its first phase to its last; in other words, the more its passage from one phase to another is effected not only by the hand of man but by the machinery itself. In manufacture, the isolation of each detail process is a condition imposed by the nature of division of labor, but in the fully developed factory the continuity of those processes is, on the contrary, imperative." Here may be found the key to the Baroque procedure whereby meanings are conferred on the set of fragments, on the pieces into which not so much the whole as the process of its production has disintegrated. Baroque emblems may be conceived as half finished products which, from the phases of a production process, have been converted into monuments to the process of destruction. During the Thirty Years' War, which, now at one point and now at another, immobilized production, the "interruption" that, according to Marx, characterizes each particular stage of this labor process could be protracted almost indefinitely. But the real triumph of the Baroque emblematic, the chief exhibit of which becomes the death's head, is the integration of man himself into the operation. The death's head of Baroque allegory is a half-finished product of the history of salvation, that process interrupted — so far as this is given him to realize — by Satan.
I won’t pretend to know all of what Benjamin means here but I have some idea. And those last sentences terrify me. Modernity begins with a war that is a strike, one that repeats through history. And the shape of this strike, this war, this repetition, is the shape of detritus of production interrupted. We shift perspective and the machine is revealed as other than it was once imagined: it is not some factory churning out commodities, but a world theatre of soteriology. An exchange takes place: the half-finished product for the half-destroyed body. Although what is created (albeit as a “monument to the process of destruction”) is some monstrous combination of the two. One and the same seen with two different perspectives, and the two perspectives separated by the distance between the promise that production will be interrupted, in rhythmic repetition, and the force of the machine that completes the product, kills the body into it, sealing death perfectly within the commodity, as its catastrophe. This distance, a tropic on the edge of the end of the world, is Hell.
This is a lot. But maybe it gets close to what I learnt. That all those bombs, mouths, wires, bones, birds, walls, suns, etc were for Sean the emblemata of our political times. These are the monsters, half-finished, half-human, half-machine, the bird interrupting itself with a scream a silent as the cosmos once seemed. I don’t know if they are to be taken up as weapons in the battle for salvation, or as mere co-ordinates on the map of hell. But they are certainly potent, and set here in commitment to redemption, for the work of raising the dead. Sean’s writing was always ready for this task, in constant preparation, and in constant interruption. Its angles quickly pacing between the two.
This has become theologically ornate. But perhaps something of the point is clear: that in the symbolic realm of Sean’s language are staked the great theological and materialist battles of our age. He had to deep dig into our time for that, furrow and dig so deep that he found the nineteenth century still there, crawling everywhere, right up to us. And all of this was set, furiously, against a more everyday view that production has all but disappeared from sight: society fully administered slips across screens with nothing but a sense of speed and gloss. His poetry decries, digs into, a laminated world with which we are supposed to play but in which we are never supposed to participate, never mind to get drunk, see the truth, raise the dead, even now as they slip away ever further through the mediatized glare.
*** Are we not surrounded by those who cast spells? Sorcery is the fashion, if only for the blighted, the meek, the poor, the oppressed. And it would be easy to mistake what Sean was writing for just another piece of subaltern superstition; promising mighty power for as long as it remains utterly powerless and otherworldly. But this is not right. Seans symbols are not just any old sign, or signal, or sigil. They are not arcana, but materials taken to hand out of the dereliction of the present. They are certainly magic, just as Sean was certainly a seer. But this is a materialist magic, a fury, a joy. They are not drawn from some other mystical world, but from this one. And his magic was to suspend them between this world and the next, between law made in the mouths of a class who hated him, and justice. He saw more deeply than most of us dare, and invited us along. Invited everyone along, including the dead who will rise, even if we have to dig and dig and drag them out of the ground and through the streets, to show the world what streets are really for. Here in this common place, between buildings, together. This is the place of magic, for riots, for burning cars; here a wall, there a blazing comet. Let his poetry dance on, and we will dance on too.

The Unnoticed Villain - Amberlin Merriweather
Sure as the sun rises, once they meet her face-to-face, they always ask “Why?”.
It’s an easy answer.  All she has to do is point to The Supernova Incident.  The Saturday Massacre.  The West Rail Collapse.  The news is full of events with catchy names that deaden the sheer, soul-crushing weight of the numerous tragedies.  Quirks used for evil, or carelessly, or even with nothing but good intentions that lead to one horrifying funeral procession after another.  The media paints every Hero who falls in the line of duty as a noble sacrifice made for the good of all.  At one point, she believed that.  At one point she stood in her uniform and held her head high and bit her lip until it bled to keep from crying out as caskets were carried past her.  As she loaned her shoulder to a friend - not in comfort, but as a pall bearer - never to be of help to them again.
Every year there were more.  Heroes.  Villains.  Vigilantes.  Civilians.  Put through the meat grinder.
Every year the academies brought in new faces, full of aspirations to make the world so much better.
Every year there were more.
Every year they were younger.
She couldn’t exactly recall when the moment was.  What exact time she decided that she’d had enough.  Who’s name she read in the obituaries.  Who’s child it was put into the ground “for the good of all”.  It all blurred together after a time.  There was a boy… he didn’t look like a boy when the Heroes surrounded him.  All shrouded in crackling energy and plasma arcs, screaming mad.  Not even old enough to have scruff on his chin yet.  A Sidekick overestimated his resistances, hit him too hard… not even a woman yet herself.  It was just one news report out of hundreds that aired, out of thousands that didn’t make it onto television.  For all that was in the public eye through the forces of Heroes and Villains, there was so much more hidden away where various governments and private cells kept things under wraps.  Children killing children.  Children being made into soldiers, weapons, sacrifices, “for the good of all”.  For power.  For profit.
At first Merriweather went without obstruction.  She began to make ripples as foreign powers buckled and collapsed, vanishing overnight.  Warlords simply abandoned their battlefields.  Companies dissolved.  Laboratories went up in smoke.  Villains turned themselves in.  It took time - months at the least in most documented cases, as the researchers began to take notice.  Simultaneous projects all running at the same time through a series of small machinations that all built up to a single sudden motion, like straws being stacked until the proverbial camel could take no more.  There were far too many observational resources available for her to be undetected, but for a long while the powers-that-be allowed her to go unchecked as she was targeting the right targets.  One didn’t need to be an official Hero to take out the bad guys, so long as one didn’t try to benefit from the Hero society’s practices.  Vigilantes were tolerated.
But then she ran out of the properly labeled “Bad Guys”.
At least, she wasn’t using the Hero’s labels in who she identified as worth targeting.  Those ripples, previously given a blind eye, began to encompass unexpected targets.  Villains still seemed to see the error of their ways in many cases, certainly.  But enrollment within prestigious Hero Academies plummeted over the course of two years.  A jarring 40% nose dive of new blood who seemed to decide there were better ways to use their Quirks and talents than to put on a mask and throw themselves into danger.  Older, well-established Heroes who suddenly felt a change of heart, who stood on national television to apologize for long-concealed crimes they had committed in the line of duty.
Even with all the spies and psychics and teleporters about, it took them a long time to corner her.  To meet her face-to-face.  Even with all the strange powers and effects at their disposal, it always ends up the same way.
They always ask her “Why?”.
Merriweather always has the same reply.  She pulls on the cigarette at her lips to soothe her long-frayed nerves, thinks a moment.  A ginger shift from side to side as she fidgets in place, never able to settle as comfortably as she’d like with the exo-skeletal Gear that braces her legs - that lets her stand as tall and defiant as she does.  She always replies with her billow of smoke and a heavy sigh.
“Because this is wrong.  It’s all wrong, and you know it.  You may try and justify it to yourself, but you know in your heart that there’s nothing good about this.  Nothing heroic.” she’s repeated it so many times, to herself and others, yet the seething fury in her voice has never diminished once.
“You’re going about it the wrong way.” they always say.  “We have to stop you.”
Once, she might have smirked.  She doesn’t have it in her anymore.  There’s just a tiredness in her eyes as she takes another drag.
“You won’t.  You can’t.” she insists as her words resonate like thunder in their bones.  “You never even found me.”
And just like that; they blink and nobody is there, with nothing but a trail of cigarette smoke lingering in the air.  Yet even as her words - planted deep as seeds of budding doubt as to the merits of their own cause - linger in their thoughts, none of them can remember ever actually seeing her.  The intel had been good, right?  She should have been there.  It must have been a mistake… they’d never even found her.  But the reports all pointed in the same direction.  How could they have been wrong?  What had allowed her to elude them before they ever came close again?  For the umpteenth time?
Sure as the sun rises, once they meet her face-to-face, they always ask “Why?”.
HERE MAMA MERRI FUCKING COMES
