On Thursday morning several volunteers were the first people to experience Detroit's new experimental new public transportation system known as "DBUB". A group of 17 commuters were handcuffed and trapped inside a giant soap bubble blown by a child who still believed in magic, while scientists monitored their brainwaves from a safe distance. After floating up up and away, over the tallest mountain and the lowest valley, beyond the tranquil meadow and the boundless plain that comes after, into untouched lands of ancient wilderness, passengers arrived at a strange and whimsical section of forest inhabited by the Hungry Tree Gnomes. According to the scientist's analysis, the commuter's brain patterns corresponded at first to wonder, followed by an adjustment period of profound terror, before finally settling into a calm so serene that it could only be compared to an unimaginably deep sleep. In an official statement released this morning, the department of transportation called the experiment a "resounding success", with mayor Figleaf Bonecleaner adding that "The full implementation of this project should result in pedestrian traffic reductions upwards of ninety percent". The city hopes to fully implement the new system by 2024, with a predicted cost of only seven dollars allocated for buying the children some sweets and treats. Let's talk about our bone processing.

Everyone has a different method for bone cleaning and through the years of trial and error, we have found we prefer 3% peroxide over bleach .

Bleach breaks down the structure of bones, so can leave them chalky, brittle, porous and even result on bones eventually deteriorating over time.

Diluted peroxide is much more gentle, keep the bones integrity in tact and you can still achieve that bleached white appearance if that is your desired outcome.

How do we clean with peroxide?

It's easy!

We just soak our flesh free cleaned bones in a jar/old Tupperware container or bucket anywhere from over night to a few days.

The longer you leave bone to soak, the lighter and whiter they will become.

So if you like that natural look over 'bleach white' don't soak your bones for more than a day.

I've been pretty silent on social media so far this year as I've been working mostly on pet memorializations. It was such an honor working with this 155 pound Mastiff, the largest dog I've worked with to date. His cleaned skull is quite heavier and denser than an average deer skull with antlers. I'd like to thank his owner/companion for allowing me to share his photos. I’ve had my first ever experience finding bones in the woods! They were pretty clean (not fleshy) and in a clear pile on the edge of a hiking trail, so I feel like they were left there by a human maybe? Maybe they kept their favorites and left the rest. Anyways, I stuck them in some hydrogen peroxide to soak when I got home and went to look up your bone cleaning post(s) to check how long you recommend soaking for, but now I can’t find it. Can you link me? Also, do you take picture submissions for species ID requests? I think maybe mule deer, as that’s the only thing that size in the area that seems to be around, but I guess if they were left by someone then they might not be.

Sure you can send for bone ID requests, but I'm only really good at skulls. @boneidentification is better! Don't forget to add a scale like a ruler.

There was a how-to-clean-bones on a now-defunct blog called bonecleaning (why do people delete blogs? it's not like you have to maintain them? No shade, it's your right, I'm just confused why people destroy their own work)

Here's a bone cleaning guide from Jake's Bones. The amount of time to soak in peroxide is not really specific, it's based on several factors...until they're done!

It's probably a deer. If that's the right size and most common in your area, whether someone moved the bones or not, that'd be my guess!

Cleaned a roe deer skull and mandibles. Just need to recolour the antlers and they’re ready to go. This one was a road collision so there was a couple of superglue surgeries I had to do.
