I’ve done a Vampire Weekend binge today, including japan bonus tracks/b-sides, non-album songs and live EPs.
The debut and Contra are a nice pair of indie rock albums, debut laying out the sound and Contra expanding on that sound.
I forgot how much I love Modern Vampires of the City. So much more cohesive than the first two. Even though I like the songwriting and production on those first albums, Modern Vampires really hits different, in a way that appeals to me so much more. I think the darker cover art and sound makes me forget about it more, which I shouldn’t be doing.
Father of the Bride is like the phoenix rising up out of the ashes, bigger and brighter. A true classic style sprawling double album, like The Beatles’ White Album, or Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti, it is incredibly well paced, a lot better paced than most near-hour long albums. Compared to most longer albums, it keeps me engaged the whole time, and feels like I’ve taken a journey, not just listened to 18 songs in a row.. I just love how eclectic and jammy it is, it really takes all the stuff I like from the last album and adds colour and expands upon it.
Gonna quickly go over the EPs and singles and stuff:
- Japanese edition bonus tracks: My thoughts on them as a whole is that they all make very good little addendums to each album. Their cover of Mickey Newbury’s “I Don’t Think Much About Her No More” from Father of the Bride is especially a standout track to me.
- “Jonathan Low”: Not much to say. It’s good, but nothing special. I wonder how it ended up on the Twilight Eclipse Soundtrack.
- “Con te partirò”: A beautiful sounding cover, I feel the love coming from it. I have no idea how good the Italian pronunciation is, and maybe that’s for the best.
- Spotify Singles: A very nice stripped (mostly) piano version of “This Life”, and a version of “I’m Goin’ Down” that I like more than the version from the iTunes Session.
- 40:42: The Sam Gendel version is neat and atmospheric, not much else to say about it. The Goose version is amazing, a full jam band version as it was always meant to be.
- The MySpace Transmissions: a fine little live session. Nothing too special aside from the occasional live strings, and the fact that it completes my library having a live EP from each era.
- iTunes Session: A really great session. All the songs are performed very cleanly, and the horn arrangements really work with the songs they chose. The covers are fine, the alternate arrangement of “Holiday” is fun.
- Spotify Sessions: Weird that it’s labeled as a “session”, even though it’s performances from the 2014 Bonnaroo Festival. Performance is good, nothing outstanding, but good to have.
- Live in Florida: I really like the current jam band version of the band, so I LOVE this EP, especially since it has the extended versions of “Sunflower” and “2021”. A rare moment where a band actually has extended versions of their really good really short songs, and they release a recording of them. The version of “A-Punk” with the guy from the crowd is super super fun too.
I also find it funny/neat that each era has a live EP exclusive to a different streaming service each time.
COLONY HOUSE releases “Would Ya Could Ya,” in anticipation of The Cannonballers, dropping 2/3/23
The music of Colony House—an indie rock band made up of brothers Will and Caleb Chapman, as well as Scott Mills and Parke Cottrell—is playfully self-described as “landlocked surf rock.” Their personal genre designation is as much inspired by their hometown of Franklin, Tenn., as their new album The Cannonballers is: within 11 tracks, the band delves into where they come from and how a place, and its memories, have made them.
“It’s too easy getting sucked into the grind of everyday life… the hustle and the hurry we all willingly subject ourselves to,” Caleb says of the newest single. “‘Would Ya Could Ya’ is about breaking the mold. At surface level, it’s a ‘let’s get outta here’ open road, never look back type of cruiser, but beneath the surface, I think it recognizes that we are often the obstacle standing in our own way and that it’s up to us to make the next move.”
Following the February 3rd release of The Cannonballers, Colony House will embark on a national tour, kicking off on February 11th at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Dates HERE.
The Cannonballers marks the band’s fourth full-length release: their three previous studio collections take listeners on a journey through stories of loss, grief, and heartbreak while welcoming them into the hope that comes on the other side. Their 2014 debut, When I Was Younger, included the single “Silhouettes,” which became the #1 most played track on Sirius XM’s Alt Nation for four months straight. Only The Lonely, whose title and demeanor pay tribute to the vintage sounds of Roy Orbison and the Beach Boys, followed in 2017. The surf-rock hit, “You Know It,” went viral on Tik Tok, and has amassed 100 million streams across all platforms to date, after being featured as the soundtrack to Samsung Mobile’s nationwide ad campaign.
Leave What’s Left Behind was released in January of 2020; the band managed to play half of their 40 city headline tour before being forced to pause alongside the rest of the world. Like many touring artists, they found different ways to continue to create, producing and directing a full-length feature film, “Everybody’s Looking For Some Light,” which was an official selection at the Nashville and Knoxville Film Festivals. The movie debuted at a two-day drive-in event produced by the band at Greystone Quarry in Franklin, TN. Over 2,000 people (in over 600 cars) showed up to watch the film and see Colony House perform.
The band has performed their songs for worldwide audiences with two appearances on both Late Night with Seth Meyers and CONAN, as well as The Today Show, VH1’s “Morning Buzz,” and MTV Live. They have also been part of several festival lineups including Shaky Knees, Austin City Limits, Firefly, WonderBus, and Lollapalooza. 2023 will see them adding Bonnaroo to that already impressive list.
The Cannonballers is an apt addition to the band’s catalog, staying true to what Colony House does best, and expanding on what their fans have gravitated to for the past decade: hope and light in the midst of it all. No frills, no gimmicks. Just heart-level rock and roll music.
The Cannonballers is now available to PRE-SAVE and will be out everywhere on February 3rd, 2023.

Band Members: Mitchel Cave, Clinton Cave, Christian Anthony
This week's artist highlight is one of my favorite bands of all time, Chase Atlantic. Chase Atlantic is a 3 member Pop, Rock, Alternative, and Indie boy band. Two of the members, Mitchel and Clinton Cave, are brothers while Christian is a long time friend of theirs. All three boys are Australian and first came together as a group in 2011. Chase Atlantic creates sensual pop that veers between emo-electronic, SoundCloud rap, and modern R&B. Before releasing their self-titled full-length debut in 2017, the group originally gained notoriety with their wildly popular 2014 single "Friends." Friends is a really great song that I highly recommend listening to. Phases, their second album from 2018, attracted additional attention, peaked at number one on the Billboard Independent Albums chart, and secured them a spot on the Warped Tour. Their seductive sound has been refined, as heard on 2021's Beauty in Death.
Mitchel and Clinton Cave were raised in Cairns, Australia and were educated in both jazz and classical music. Mitchel joined the boy band What About Tonight while still in his teenage years, where he first met guitarist Christian Anthony. The group competed on The X Factor Australia for a brief while, but soon disbanded. Before getting back in touch with Anthony and starting Chase Atlantic in 2011, the Cave brothers continued to make music throughout the following few years and released music on their YouTube page. The group started revamping their sound, fusing parts of modern hip-hop and trap production with inspirations from catchy pop and emo-rock. They released the Dalliance EP in 2014, followed by Nostalgia in 2015, which featured the hit song "Friends," that I mentioned earlier.
Two individuals by the name of Joel and Benji Madden of the rock band Good Charlotte were interested in these early releases and hired Chase Atlantic to work for their MDDN development firm. Following a deal with Warner Bros., the group released three EPs, all of which served as prelude to the arrival of their self-titled full-length debut in 2017. Tours in the US and Australia were followed by appearances at Bonnaroo and the Reading/Leeds Festival, as well as a spot on the 2018 Warped Tour. Phases, their second album, was released in 2019 and featured the singles "Her" and "Love Is (Not) Easy." (Side note: I literally listened to Love Is (Not) Easy twice a day for about 2 months, the song is just that good.) It debuted in the Top Ten on the Heatseekers chart and peaked at number 24 on Billboard's Independent Albums chart.
Chase Atlantic traveled extensively in 2018 and 2019 before returning to Los Angeles to continue writing music. Because the MDDN, owned by the Madden Brothers, was temporarily closed due to the COVID-19 epidemic, they primarily recorded at home. The band released their third studio album, the Billboard-charting Beauty in Death, in March 2021. A deluxe edition of Beauty in Death was released in 2022 and featured the follow-up songs "OHMAMI" and "ESCORT."
I really love Chase Atlantic's music so much. Their music is perfect to listen to when I'm doing homework or when I'm on a nighttime car ride. I really hope that the next time Chase Atlantic comes to an area like Charlotte or Atlanta that I can go because it is one of my ultimate dreams to see them live in concert.
Do you think you would like Chase Atlantic? If so, you should listen to one of the songs I attached to this post. They're really great and I think you would like them too!
At Bonnaroo 2014 (which very controversially had Kanye West as headliner) I watched this guy in the volunteer camp walk up to the big "FUCK KANYE" graffiti, cross out "FUCK" and replace it with "Accept"
And then as soon as he walked away another guy immediately laughed, crossed out "Accept" and rewrote "FUCK"

Sims Sessions (Featured Artists)
Bebe Rexha
Diamond-selling and two-time GRAMMY®-nominated New York City native Bebe Rexha is a musical force to be reckoned with. Her RIAA Platinum-certified debut album Expectations (released June 2018 on Warner Records) contained the Platinum single “I’m a Mess” and the global chart-topping smash “Meant to Be” (featuring Florida Georgia Line), now RIAA Certified Diamond. “Meant to Be” held the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for a record-setting 50 straight weeks, the longest reign ever by a female lead artist, and won Top Country Song at the 2019 Billboard Music Awards and Best Collaboration at the 2018 iHeart Radio Music Awards. It was subsequently nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 61st annual GRAMMY Awards® in February 2019, where Bebe was also nominated for Best New Artist.
Early in her career, Bebe won the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences’ Best Teen Songwriter Award, and then formally burst onto the scene when she wrote “The Monster,” a worldwide hit for Eminem and Rihanna that was certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA. Bebe went on to co-write and carry the instantly recognizable hook for the 3x Platinum “Hey Mama,” by David Guetta, which was nominated for a Billboard Music Award for Top Dance/Electronic Song. Bebe also hit #1 on the Billboard Pop and Rap charts with her 5x Platinum “Me, Myself & I” with G-Eazy. In 2017, Bebe released the critically acclaimed EPs, All Your Fault: Part 1 (with the Platinum single “I Got You”) and All Your Fault: Part 2 (with “Meant to Be”). In conjunction with GRAMMY® Week 2019, Bebe launched the GRAMMY® Music Education Coalition’s (GMEC) national campaign on behalf of its new All-Star Ambassador program. Better Mistakes, her new album, includes the hit singles “Baby, I’m Jealous” feat. Doja Cat and “Sacrifice.” To date, Bebe has amassed over four billion YouTube views and over 12 billion total global streams.
Glass Animals
Since 2010, Glass Animals have redefined alternative pop with their experimental sounds, cinematic visuals, and narrative lyrics. The Platinum-Certified UK quartet—Dave Bayley [lead vocals, guitar], Drew MacFarlane [guitar, keys, backing vocals], Ed Irwin-Singer [bass, keys, backing vocals], and Joe Seaward [drums, backing vocals]—first presented their signature style on their 2014 breakout debut, ZABA. It yielded the Platinum single “Gooey” and elevated the band into the global spotlight. 2016’s How To Be A Human Being notably garnered a nomination for the prestigious Mercury Prize. However, Glass Animals lifted off to a new stratosphere with Dreamland in 2020. It marked their first Top 10 debut on the Billboard Top 200, while their global smash hit “Heat Waves” has amassed millions of streams to date, went Platinum in numerous countries, gave the band their first #1 on the U.S. Alternative Radio Chart, Top 15 at Top 40 Radio, and hit Top 10 on Spotify’s US Chart. Skyrocketing to the forefront of popular culture, they garnered nominations in the categories of “Top Rock Song” and “Top Rock Album” at the 2021 Billboard Music Awards, delivered knockout performances on Billboard Music Awards, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, The Late Late Show with James Corden, and Ellen, and lined up global headline dates for the 2021 Dreamland Tour everywhere from legendary amphitheaters such as Red Rocks to Bonnaroo, Life Is Beautiful, Outside Lands, and more. The band sold over 130,000 tickets in three days for their 2021-2022 North American tour, with the majority of the tickets selling out instantly. All the while maintaining their unique connection to their fans by creating their open sourced website where fans can create artwork based on the world of Dreamland, putting on a “Live In The Internet” concert that sold 25,000 tickets worldwide, and more. They created unique music videos during the 2020 pandemic by DIY-shooting solo in Dave Bayley’s apartment directed solely over Zoom (“Dreamland”), asking neighbors to shoot on their iPhones while Dave walked down the street (“Heat Waves”), and inviting fans to take 3D scans of their heads (“Tangerine”). Racking up billions of streams across their catalogue, they even made history as “the first UK band to capture #1 on Triple J’s Hottest 100 since 2009” with “Heat Waves” down under in Australia, leading to the longest run at #1 in 2021 on the ARIA Official Singles Chart. Ultimately, Glass Animals continue to redefine what alternative can be, while they quietly overtake the mainstream.
Joy Oladokun
With a guitar in hand, baseball cap over her eyes, and hooded sweatshirt loose, a woman sings with all of the poetry, pain, passion, and power her soul can muster. She is a new kind of American troubadour. She is Joy Oladokun. The Delaware-born, Arizona-raised, and Nashville-based Nigerian-American singer, songwriter, and producer projects unfiltered spirit over stark piano and delicate guitar. Her music and story galvanized a growing fan base as she completed a successful Kickstarter campaign to release her independent debut, Carry. Her song “No Turning Back” soundtracked a viral baby announcement by Ciara and Russell Wilson, opening up the floodgates. She landed a string of high-profile syncs, including NBC’s This Is Us, ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy, and Showtime’s The L Word: Generation Q. On the heels of in defense of my own happiness (the beginnings), she garnered unanimous critical praise. Billboard touted the album as one of the “Top 10 Best LGBTQ Albums of 2020,” while NPR included “i see america” among the “100 Best Songs of 2020.” Predicted as on the verge of a massive breakthrough, she emerged on various tastemaker lists, including Spotify’s RADAR Artists to Watch 2021, YouTube “Black Voices Class of 2021,” NPR’s 2021 “Artists To Watch,” and Amazon Music’s “Artist To Watch 2021.” Not to mention, Vogue crowned her #1 “LBTQ+ Musician To Listen To.” She kicked off the new year by making her television debut on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with a stunning and stirring performance of “breathe again.”After attracting acclaim from Vogue, NPR, and American Songwriter, her words arrive at a time right when we need them the most.
