#book: american psycho

reading American Psycho by Brett Easton Ellis and I want to present my Thoughts™️ on the big question.

I don't think that Bateman killed anyone. in the book, at least. I think he's a terrible person with violence thoughts/tendencies, but I don't think he actually killed somebody. to me, the murders were just elaborate fantasies meant to pleasure him in response to the stress of everyday life. having to constantly keep up appearances while feeling belittled by those around him is what seems to motivate these escapist fantasies the most.

sometimes, Bateman tells us that somebody noticed blood on his clothing, floors, or whatever, but that this person is unable or chooses not to speak up. I think these are part of Bateman’s delusions. at work, he doesn’t seem to be noticed for his accomplishments or efforts; in fact, when he is praised by Paul Owen, Bateman is actually being mistaken for somebody else. these “murders,” he sees them as accomplishments. these people that “see” signs of Bateman’s actions, they are acknowledging his accomplishments. however, they never verbally accuse him, which would’ve given him concrete acknowledgement of his accomplishments. this frustration causes an escalation in the violence of his fantasies.

at work, he is not noticed for his success and is berated by those better than him. this has led to him harboring violent fantasies; but, even in his fantasies, he could never be noticed for his actions. despite being at the top, on his way to achieving the American Dream, he could never be noticed. just like the rest of us.

crazy how donna tartt (author of the secret history) and bret easton ellis (author of american psycho) went to the same college (bennington) AND were good friends and then went on to write two of the most misinterpreted satire novels by the media

I finished reading American Psycho a couple weeks ago and watched the movie afterwards! I honestly loved it and I personally think the movie was a pretty neat adaptation!!(The violence was 500x less, holy moly was the book gorey-) Anyways, here’s a Patrick doodle because he is my baby girl and I’m totally normal about him! :D
