it's been a while! I've been working on a few things, but couldn't pass up today's @drarrymicrofic prompt, starfish. (T, 250 words)

On the nights that Harry was away, Draco had the option of sleeping in the middle of their king-sized bed, limbs akimbo, taking up as much space as possible. He could pile pillows on either side of him, so he wouldn’t have to drag one set with him when he inevitably tossed and turned midway through the night. The sheets were cool against his skin, the bed an absolutely perfect temperature for sleep without the furnace of Harry’s body occupying it.

It was something he talked about with friends, Hermione particularly understanding the joy of starfishing in a giant empty bed. 

But secretly, Draco hated it. The bed was too cold without Harry, too lonely without Harry. 

He much preferred to be crowded to the edge, grumbling, with one careless, heavy limb thrown over his chest, body half-in and half-out of the sheets even on winter nights to try and regulate his body temperature. He much preferred the security of having his husband between him and the door, keeping away mythical intruders. He much preferred waking up to Harry’s morning breath and soft, sticky kisses before either of them brushed their teeth, reminders of love and belonging his favourite way to begin any day.

So on those starfish nights, Draco stayed on his side, arguably a third of the bed instead of half. He piled pillows at his back, a rough semblance of Harry’s presence. He cast unnecessary warming charms.

And he waited for Harry to come home to him.

Beloved Beast

It wasn’t easy, keeping a secret of that magnitude for twenty-one years. But Lucius had experience, he’d kept it for just as long himself. Like his father before him and grandfather before him. Generations of beautiful Malfoy men, using their Allure for wealth and power. 

Lucius was lucky. I was his bride and mate. Not all Malfoy’s have enjoyed such good fortune. Many were left to die in loveless marriages as their mates lived on. 

What were we to do? Keeping Draco’s condition a secret felt right at first, we were doing what was best for him. After the war I doubted. But his confidence had been decimated, and I couldn’t deal him another blow. For who would love a beast but a wife or mother? 

Only a life partner, bound with a vow. I tried to find him a marriage contract, hoping for the best—a true mate. Stealth and force were of no use. The stubborn boy refused all matches and called me “old fashioned” for attempting to arrange a marriage for him. I couldn’t correct him. 

It was only a matter of time. Every minute ticked omniously after he turned twenty-one, and I waited for the inevitable explosion in his blood. 

It happened in public, to my horror. Triggered by his mate, no less. Not his sweet bride, or even a passionate lover—but Potter. The boy who lived, my son’s death sentence. The boy I saved to end my son. Looking back, nothing would have made a difference. It would always be Potter; my Draco destined to die by his hand. 

Now the Potter boy chases me for answers. So I run, and I grieve for my perfect boy. I only wish that Death will be swift and kind to my beloved beast, my only child.

Excerpt:

The continuous buzzing of his mobile pulls Harry out of an enjoyable dream and grumbling unhappily about some people’s audacity. He rolls away from Draco and searches his nightstand with bleary, unfocused eyes. Finding his glasses first, Harry drags himself into a half-upright position before reaching for his phone. He blinks a few times to sharpen his vision, and his thumb hovers above the touchscreen, ready to swipe to accept the call. The words ‘there better be a catastrophe about to happen’ dance on the tip of his tongue, and he’s prepared to show his prickly side when he notes the Caller ID — Teddy is calling, and it’s a video call too.

Harry’s irritation over being roused from his sleep at six in the morning on a Sunday dissipates in an instant and checking on Draco—who is still fast asleep—Harry pushes his duvet back and slips out of bed. He doesn’t bother with his slippers, and accepting the call, he places a finger across his lips to stop Teddy from speaking. Harry makes it out of the bedroom in a few large strides, and closing the door behind him; he heads across the landing into his study.

As he steps into the room, he finds himself squinting. Sun’s pouring through the windows and he’s not prepared for quite that much light this early in the morning. He waves his hand to wandlessly close the curtains, temporarily banning the sun’s golden fingers from flooding the room with a pearly glow.

“Hey,” he says softly, looking at Teddy, whose face is right there in front of him.

He has never realised that the other man is a few centimetres shorter than him, but Draco can comfortably nestle his face in Potter’s hair, redolent of cedarwood and vanilla, and urge his face closer to his neck until he feels Potter’s nose and his stubble not against his robe but against his skin. These broad shoulders that appear so unyielding melt to Draco’s touch.

“What now?” Potter doesn’t look worried, his gaze level as it meets Draco’s, a flash of something odd, too happy and young in his eyes. Draco has no clue. Short term, they should probably get off the rooftop before Draco’s fingers go completely numb. Long term, he should probably start calling Potter by his first name. The idea of it doesn’t really make his stomach twist uncomfortably anymore.

He shrugs, the movement of it made lopsided by the way Potter is pressed so closely against his left side. He doesn’t tell Potter that he might be in love with him, but he thinks maybe Potter gets that something has once again shifted and settled between them, hopefully for the last time. For now it feels ok to just stay here for a bit, Draco’s home spread out below him. Maybe sort of pressed right next to him as well.

“Not angrier than I am, I assure you. I can’t believe you’ve made me love you so fast,” Draco said, wiping the tears off Harry’s cheeks with his thumbs, which he then dried on the stupid sweatshirt. “This is the worst thing you’ve ever done to me.”

HP Rec Fest - Part 1 (Days 1-16)

Boy, has it been a moment since I've gone through my fanfic bookmarks. Thankful that @hprecfest has given me a reason to do so and rediscover some old gems!

Anyways making this list made me realize that I'm a connoisseur of explicit content so most of these are smutty and I'll leave that up to you to decide whether that's good or bad

(These are almost exclusively post-war fics where everyone is an adult, unless otherwise stated!)

1. A favorite fic under 5k: If We Lie Like This by everythingokay

(Harry x Charlie Weasley, rated E, 4.1k)

Harry/Charlie is one of my absolute favorite ships of all time, and this is one of the sweetest pwps I've ever read of them, so you know this had to be my first rec.

2. A comfort fic: Lumos by birdsofshore

(Drarry, rated E, 41.5k)

This is one of my oldest bookmarks, and still one of the best. I love, love, love eighth year fics, in no small part because of this one. The summary really says it all:

"Harry never expected to spend eighth year listening to Draco Malfoy wanking."

4. A fic with art: What Have You Been Hiding Under Those Robes, Professor Malfoy? by Booktopus

Finding art in my fics is such a rare, exciting surprise, especially because I rarely go looking for them. Now, a GIF? And a smutty gif at that? Of tattooed professor Draco? What. A. Find.

5. A non-AO3 fic: The Lust of Gryffindors by Fearful Porpentine

(Harmione + so many pairings/groupings, rated M, 381.5k, aged-up during canon)

Yeah, I'm pretty much exclusively an AO3 girlie, so I don't have many options for this one. Still, this is a standout as one of my favorite smutty extravaganzas.

6. An unreliable narrator fic: Touch by bixgirl1

(Drarry, Rated E, 45k)

I had this fic on my TBR for so long before I actually read it, and when I finally did, I was KICKING myself for waiting so long! I love touch-starved characters finally getting what they need (is it self-fulfilling? perhaps), and I never thought a sleep-deprived Harry could be so funny.

(I'm aware this is an unreliable narrator in the loosest sense of the word but I'm sticking with it because it NEEDS to be recced)

7. A canon-compliant fic: With the Edges Worn Down by MayatheBee

(Harry x Ron x Hermione, rated E, 13k)

By "canon-compliant," we mean "takes place so far in the future that canon can't disprove it," right?

If so, then here's my pick. After Ginny's death, Ron and Hermione decide to finally act on feelings that have been ignored for their entire friendship. It is so, so sweet and so, so hot.

8. A canon-divergence fic: Safe Word is Devil's Snare by ShayaLonnie

(Neville x Hermione, rated E, 97k)

Hot Neville Agenda? Hot Neville Agenda.

Neville is fast becoming one of my favorite characters in fic (both in reading and writing). 9. A rare pair fic: 93 Diagon Alley by Schmem_14

(Harry x George, rated M, 30k)

I'm quickly realizing that most of the fic I consume (outside of drarry) is rare pairs, but this is one of the best. Harry and George leaning on each other through their grief, and realizing what they need to get through said grief is, in fact, each other? Sign me up. I usually avoid stories that feature Fred's death as a significant plot point, but this is too well done to ignore.

10. A fest fic: Beware: Naked People Ahead by SonnenFlower

(Lots of pairings, rated M, 6.6k)

I’m recommending this fic not only because of the absolute hilarity of the premise, but because it is a part of one of the best fests I’ve ever come across — the Hermione’s Nook Naked Weasley Fest! This fic had me laughing the whole way through (and crying when I wasn’t.)

11. A dark fic: Whore by orphan_account

(Harry x Fred x George + noncon, etc, rated E, 141.6k, takes place during canon)

Listen, I don't read dark fics very often. They tend to crush my soul and spin me out. This is my "I want to hurt" fic — SO MIND THE TAGS.

12. A WIP you're following: New Blood by artemisgirl

(Pairings still evolving, rated M, currently 1.3 million words, takes place during canon)

As a general rule, I don't read many in-progress fics (this is a personal fault because I get too impatient and invested). But when I started this fic, it had over 1 million words and didn't seem to be stopping anytime soon, so I took the plunge. It features a Slytherin, overpowered, badass Hermione, deep fae/wix lore, and a unique twist on all our favorite characters!

13. A fic with over 100k words: Finding Sophrosyne by mlfoyskhione

(Drarry, rated T, 136.5k)

An eighth year fic where everyone in Hogwarts falls into an unwakeable sleep...except Draco and Harry. Absolutely delectable.

14. A favorite series: Harry Potter & Seven Years of Chaos by Severitus812

(Harry x Fred + Severitus, unrated, 1+ million words; takes place during canon)

When I started this fic, the first six parts were published and part of the seventh. I DEVOURED them in a week, and I still haven't gotten around to finishing it because I'm positive it's going to break my heart. Still, an absolute beast of a story that is so, so fun to experience!

Okay, I’ve bookmarked entirely too many fics since the start of this fest, so to avoid repeats, I’m recommending the last fic I bookmarked BEFORE then. Based on my url, it couldn’t be more perfect — Draco, George, Harry, AND Fred? Absolute perfection. Sexy, sexy perfection.

From the title of this fic through the end of it, I was laughing. And where I wasn’t, I was fanning myself because. Hot. Damn. I’d never shipped Harry and Theo Nott until reading this.

What Have You Been Hiding Under Those Robes, Professor Malfoy? (E, 15k) (Draco/Harry)

After an accidental explosion in the Potions classroom, professors Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy have to utilize the emergency showers at the back of the classroom. Harry is surprised to find that prim & proper Draco is positively covered in tattoos. And… are those nipple piercings? 

You can probably tell where this goes.

If you’re an avid tattoo fan and want to read something deep, heartfelt yet sensual, this fic is it. I love the way Maddy portrayed Harry and Draco as two people who have matured and grown wiser, yet they still feel like things are at stake. Like their reputations, and the friendship they have with each other. The pacing is perfect, and it's such a breath of fresh air to see these two finally slow down and communicate for once. And what a perfect way to weave in the use of showers in here, too!

Winning in More Ways Than One (E, 8.1k) (Marcus/Oliver)

Marcus and Oliver have always been at each other's throats, that much hasn't changed now that they're thirty and playing for the same team - in more ways than one. Marcus gets in a little over his head after a bet to determine who the better player is leaves Oliver in a pair of green lace knickers, which leaves Marcus in quite a pickle. What happens when the fucking is better than the fighting?

This fic is such a fun take on a classic enemies to lovers ship. This was Maddy's first Flintwood fic, and it's because of this fic that I started reading her other works. Her clever way of working in fun and humorous teasing, flirting and banter between these two hotheads is gold. Of course, there are feels and bits of fluff. And knickers. More than one pair of them, in fact. What a smashing combo. The summary says all, so give this a read if it's up your alley!

For today’s edition of May We Lift Each Other Up, I want to send a big hello to Maddy ( @thebooktopus​ | Booktopus on AO3). Maddy is wonderful - reader, writer and reccer in the HP fandom, and not only is she a big Drarry fan but she also contributes so much for the rarepairs of the fandom! In addition, she works really hard to lift up her fellow creators, and it’s just such a fantastic positive energy she brings to the fandom, and I’m so glad to share this corner of it with her!

Today I want to bring your attention to her most recent fic (as of my writing this anyway), Subscribed (Jeddy, 4624, Explicit). Okay. So. I will confess, I dabble in Jeddy and this fic was SO FUN! I love fics that bring more of the modern world in, and in this one, James has a TikTok!! And Teddy enjoys it!!

I love some mutual pining and that moment, THAT MOMENT, you know the one?? Where all of a sudden it clicks for both idiots (loving) and it’s like, oh. OH. Yeah, that moment and Maddy just absolutely nails it! 

This fic also does a wonderful job of navigating the space of sweet AND hot AND funny, and her banter is spot-on. I’ve said it before, but I think good banter is really difficult to write, and Maddy’s done it so well!

Also, the smut is scorching hot and has those moments of realism that are so funny and just so true! Go check it out!

Liv's list this morning reminded me of your absolutely fab artwork of dragon tamers drarry and this was the result. I hope you're having an amazing day!! (T, 375 words)

Harry did some quick mental maths, calculating his speed against the distance between him and the Snitch, as well as Norberta’s incoming velocity and likelihood that she’d singe him. 

“Potter, don’t you dare!” Draco called out behind him. Harry could hear a hint of fear, but that hadn’t ever stopped him before. 

One quick barrel-roll and a lot of faith in his favourite dragon on the reserve, and Harry was holding the Snitch overhead, grinning back at Draco. “Don’t be a sore loser, Malfoy,” he teased.

Draco glared at him before heading for the ground. 

Harry groaned. “We’ll play again tomorrow, ‘Berta, promise.” He thought he caught a look of sympathy from the docile predator. 

Throwing his broom in the equipment shed, Harry chased after Draco, who was stomping towards the row of cabins. “Draco, come on!” he called, jogging up and reaching for him.

“Don’t touch me.” Draco jerked away. 

“Draco,” Harry pleaded. “I knew she wasn’t going to blast me. We were having fun, weren’t we?” 

Draco spun, his eyes full of the fire that Norberta had held back. “Fun? We were having fun until you decided that catching the Snitch was more important than your own life!” He shoved Harry.

“Draco—” Harry caught Draco’s arm and ran his hand down the leather of Draco’s armour.

“Don’t ‘Draco’ me, you arse,” Draco snapped, but he didn’t pull away. 

“I’m sorry I scared you.” Harry linked their fingers together. “I promise next time I’ll forget the Snitch.” 

Draco scoffed, but let Harry pull him closer. “Whatever, Potter.”

“Oh, so I’m ‘Potter’ today?” Harry tentatively pressed a kiss to the side of Draco’s mouth.

“Until I’m done being angry with you, yes.” Draco’s words didn’t match his tone, though, and he accepted another lingering kiss from Harry. 

“Okay, darling,” Harry said, squeezing his hand. “Do you still want to catch the sunset?”

Draco looked up, as if assessing the pinks and oranges and determining their worth. “Yes. But from the porch, not from our brooms.” 

Harry nodded, picturing how he’d pull Draco into his lap so they could share the rocking chair, how Draco would fuss but ultimately settle his long limbs and nuzzle into Harry’s neck. 

There were worse ways to spend an evening.

Thank you for sending this my way :) Apologies I don’t have a ton to rec for myself (blushes). I only started writing late January 2022, yes this year, so I think I have a decent excuse!

That said, here’s what I got:

1 - Candy Hearts “I Love You” - I really challenged myself with Candy Hearts (I did 19/28!), especially when a prompt didn’t particularly inspire me. This was one of such instances, and I remedied the lack of inspiration by throwing a ton of myself into the writing. So it’s written in first person Draco/M POV lol I think this one may be my all-time fave.

2 - Candy Hearts “Beloved" I got the idea while brushing my teeth, slammed my toothbrush down, and ran to write it. It’s weird, it’s spooky, I love it. It got 8 likes on Tumblr but one person *got* what I was going for and wrote it in the tags, and I s2g I jumped up and YESSSSed. I have no chill. I also HC my stories a ton and I like to pretend that this is Draco from “I Love You” doing *anything* to keep his Harry safe.

3 - Kinkuary Toys My first smut! I’m really proud of myself for actually going through and writing it, and even more proud of myself for asking for help with it. I was *very* nervous, especially because I wanted to show hot sex in an irl setting where things aren’t usually all CLOTHES OFF OMG LEGGO. It was also the first story I ever used a Beta for, and I haven’t stopped screaming about Maddy (booktopus) since. I’m actually not tagging on purpose b/c she’s probs sick of my screaming (I said I have no chill).

4 - Under the Tuscan Moon My first fic! I love this story so much, and it would be done if I had not become fest obsessed (I have 3 current fest pieces in the works…). I started writing it with clear journeys for Hermione and Harry, but have fallen in love with Ron’s. I’m so excited for what’s to come for them.

5 - Rebel, Rebel The longest work I’ve written to date! It’s a fluffy feel-good piece that started as me asking myself (while listening to David Bowie, duh), “What would happen if Scorpius went Muggle to give his father hell?” That’s not what I ended up writing, but I kept the title 🤣 I have so many HCs about the characters that I couldn’t quite add in there, and I'm really proud that the OCs have resonated with people. He has his own playlist and a very special place in my heart!

There is something very vulnerable about being creative. Even if your story or art is for your eyes only, it is still a piece of your soul you’ve ripped free and given shape to.

It can be a moment of pride, seeing it exist outside of yourself, but scary, too.

Scarier when you allow others access to it.

Scarier still, when its shape is not one many will see beauty in. When it is too dark, too rough for others to love.

You can't control how others will receive your creation. And you can't always anticipate it. Might not know to brace yourself when it is ripped to shreds. Might not know how to feel when it is ignored; untouched and unwanted.

There is thrill and validation in praise. It is what we hope for. Hope to see these labors of love embraced and accepted. It's a part of yourself being loved, after all.

On Commenting (as a Reader and Writer)

Plenty of people will tell you just how important commenting is, and they are right. Yes, they are meaningful. Any kindness you spread will be meaningful.

As a writer who is friends with other writers (and many other types of creators in general), I can tell you that I've yet to encounter a creator who is judging your kindness. No one scoffs or rolls their eyes. They are, as a whole, touched by every bit of love they receive.

As a writer...I love comments! They make my world go round. I have so much love for this fandom and I put so much heart into my stories that it is very reassuring to know that other people enjoy them. And getting to hear people's takeaways? What they thought, how they felt? There's something so beautiful about that! (Also, I won't lie, the comments where I'm getting screamed at for wrecking hearts are -chef's kiss-.)

Especially as fan creators, we'll never be paid in any sort of currency for what we do. And no one is obligated to "pay" us in comments, but it sure helps keep the lights on (in a creative and wellbeing sense, rather than a literal sense.)

As a reader...I love comments! As in, reading them! It's so fun to finish up a story you fell in love with and then check the comment section for what other people had to say. Other people who, more than likely, also enjoyed this story! Even better if the creator RESPONDS so you might just see more of what the creator has to say about their work!

It makes me excited all over again, seeing how the work has impacted other people. And knowing that it isn't just me. We're not alone in loving fanfiction anymore than we're alone in loving the fandom itself.

As a commenter...I love comments! As in writing them! I LOVE commenting.

The funny story is this...That once upon a time I was too scared to comment. I didn't feel that anyone would value anything I had to say. I felt like I would be bothering the creator with my flailing incoherency. That I had too much to say, too much enthusiasm, blah blah blah. The idea of commenting was embarrassing. Of putting your love out there for someone you don't know, and not knowing how it will be received.

Then I fell so madly in love with a story I couldn't not comment. I dipped my toes into the water at first and, when my more restrained comments were well-received I lost my goshdang mind. Began writing ESSAYS about my love for that work.

It's always a little scary for me. But what I realized is that it's the same sort of fear I have when writing. Wishing I said things better. That I had more to say, or less. Worried about how it will be seen. Etc, etc.

Creating means putting yourself out there. You put so much heart and soul into this work and then you share it and it's such a vulnerable experience. And you hope and you hope and you hope that it's okay.

Commenting is similar, in a way. Exposing in a way. But it's a GOOD thing. The act of sharing love is pure and joyous and infectious! Go scream at that creator that "OH MY GOD THIS IS SO GOOD", nice and simple and will put a smile on their face. Or write them a dissertation about how their work has wrecked your existence in the best of ways. They'll eat it up, I promise!

Rest assured, sharing your love is spreading goodness in a world that very much needs it.

But if you're looking at what's in it for you...Well. It's just plain FUN. Chatting about things you like is FUN. Even a simple "OH MY GOD I LOVED IT" is fun to get off your chest!

Not to mention I find that, especially in my more long-winded comments, the more I talk about what I love, the more I love it. Sitting there and thinking it out and really mulling over the more meaningful parts...ahh!! I thought I was excited before, but I'm really excited now!!!!

Commenting gives you the opportunity to take an extra moment with the creation that touched you. Extra time to think about it. Extra time to enjoy it. And extra time to give back to it.

You don't have to comment, of course not. I hope no one ever feels obligated to do so. But it is an opportunity you have to interact more with the work and also bring joy to someone else while doing it. So if you ever feel like you want to, I hope you feel encouraged to do so!

(Wow I really meant for this to be a short "commenting is fun!" piece but, much like my comments, it quickly got out of control. Oops!)

“Remember when I was fit?”

The question startles a laugh out of me, which I choke back when Harry whips his head around to glare at me. 

“Harry,” I say placatingly. He grumbles, turning back to the mirror and kneading at his doughy midsection. 

I sigh quietly, throwing off the duvet and marking the place in my book with the photo of us from James and Teddy’s wedding. I stand, my bad knee protesting, thinking it was done supporting me for the day, and press my chest against Harry’s back, wrapping my arms around his waist. 

I meet his stormy eyes in the mirror. They’re no less brilliant than the first time I saw them decades ago, even though they have more lines around them now. 

“You’re still quite fit, old man.” I run my fingers through his salt and pepper hair, still full and curly, unlike my own receding hairline. 

“Am not. Should’ve never taken a desk job.” 

I resist the urge to snort. “Head Auror is not exactly ‘taking a desk job,’ love.”

He grins despite himself. 

“There’s Witch Weekly’s award-winningest smile!” I kiss his neck playfully, leaving my lips pressed against his warm skin.

“Stop!” He protests, but his arms tighten around mine. 

“Why don’t I show you all the things I still love about you?”

I take the way he relaxes against me as consent and wrestle him over to the bed. We fall in a mess of limbs, rearranging ourselves into a familiar position, our heads nestled together on a pillow. 

I trace my thumb over his laugh lines. “Proof we’ve shared a happy life.”

I skim my fingers over his paunch. “Proof that one of us finally learned how to cook.”

I bring his hand to my lips, kissing the knuckle below his wedding ring. “Proof that you’re mine.”

I brush a greying curl away from his forehead. “Proof we’ve survived, against all the odds.”

I cup my hand over his cock, which is getting hard. “Proof I still do it for you.” 

He presses me back against the mattress, kissing me in a way that still steals my breath.

“Would it make you feel younger if we rutted against each other like teenagers?” I tease, rolling my hips up. 

“Maybe.” He smiles against my lips. 

“Let’s see that legendary stamina.” 

When he collapses against me, my body limp and sated, he whispers, “Thank you,” so quietly I almost miss it.

I just hug him tighter, this legend of a man that I’m so lucky to call my own.
