Notes: this is a teaser of another series i want to start on AO3! once i finish the mainstay fic, i want to make ones of all of my favorite ships!! this is one that’s super near and dear to my heart, so i hope you love it as much as i do!!

“I want you to destroy it.”

KAY/O couldn’t bring himself to do it, holding the small device in his hands much like a small child would hold a lightning bug; with a gentle curiosity that produced nothing but destruction. 

It was one of Killjoy’s personal thumb drives, painted with little splatters that looked eerily like Raze’s abilities. He was handed it after being dragged here for “privacy reasons”, before the girl locked the door and began to divulge its contents; a trove of memories from the man that he technically was.

The memories of Alpha Earth’s Tariq Porter.

Apparently, Alpha’s KAY/O never got out of testing due to his “violent nature”. They still destroyed this man and took his memories, only to scrap his life’s work because of a testing flaw.

“Don’t you want to see who you were here? You can’t meet your Alpha Counterpart, but you have his memories!” The young girl’s concerned enthusiasm was almost endearing, had it not been for her subject matter.

“Killjoy.” Whether he sighed through his voicebox or took a moment to compress the steam out of his chassis, she will never know. “I have no reason to see his memories.”

“You are Tariq Porter, and I know that.” She crossed her arms. “The Tariq I knew was always so kind, and it’s such a shame that he died for this before I could step in to stop it.” According to Kingdom files, the project had been started immediately after First Light, and his memories had been extracted only months after. 

This was many months before Killjoy was promoted to take over Research and Development, but she still had not forgiven herself for his death. “This is just as much for me as it is for you.”

“His memories do not matter to me.”

There was some kind of pull from within him, but he pushed it aside.

“I know that’s a lie.” The atmosphere in the room quickly soured.

He would frown if he could. He hated seeing her hurt, something in his servos would ring and jitter every time, but he knew that this was going to be bad. He already had to partition his memory logs to deal with Brimstone, he couldn’t do this to himself again.

He turned to walk out of the room, but stops to look back at her for a moment.

“I want you to destroy it.”

He could see this pierce through her heart as they locked eyes and he nodded heavily.

“Not until you look at the memories. Until then,” she smiled fondly. “I miss Tariq!” Her smile dissolved into a chuckle, “so I’m going to scrub through them.”

“What are you looking for?” His body turned back to face her. “What do you know about him?”

“Tariq was like Brim,” she smiled. “There’s so much I want to tell you about him, but I need you to watch this with me. There’s something there, but I can’t tell you why without it.” 

He took a moment to think about this, morbid curiosity taking over. What was it that he needed to know about this universe’s Tariq? Was he not just the same man on a different path? Killjoy took this moment of contemplation as a confirmation that he was willing to go through with her plan as she dragged him back into the heart of the room, encouraging him to sit down.

“Wait!” She beamed brightly. “I need to have a third here for viewing non-mission Kingdom files, I’ll go get Brim!”

That felt too on the nose, and he needed to push. “Why him specifically?” His head cocked to the side as his display changed to a question mark.

She stopped for a moment and breathed lightly, seeming to collect her thoughts.

The silence continued to stretch before she blurted out her thoughts. “He’s important, especially in regards to Tariq.” The girl patted his head lightly, almost awkwardly. “Who was he to you, in Omega?”

“He was…” He had to stop himself, this wasn’t hers to hear. Even if she couldn’t know, she still needed to know. For her sanity and his partitioning. “… He is very important to me, and my purpose on Omega Earth.”

Her voice and face softened. “Well, he was very important to our Brimstone too.” The heaviness in the air seemed to dissolve as she smiled fondly. “He’d want to see these. He never got to say goodbye, I don’t think.”

“Did you?” His response was so quick, he almost didn’t even catch it. The young girl did, however, and almost looked offended at the question.

“Of course not!” Her harsh laugh broke through the still-slightly-precarious air. “He ‘went missing’ while I was still an intern, and…” She seemed to choke up a bit. “… and it really hurt both Brim and I. Tariq was like another dad to me, like Brim is, and having to grieve the loss of him and watch my father figure grieve the loss of his-“ Her voice stopped softly as she took a step back. “I’ve said too much, I’m going to get Brimstone.”

okay so. this is gunna be weird. bc there are two very distinctive sides of me. there is the half that quite literally forgets kayo exists. that sees him exclusively for lore purposes. that loses interest in him because he is not a girlboss. but. but but but but

Sova

- Sova is a big guy alright, we all know that

- that means he’s getting real close with his crush right now

- if you’re looking for it, you can feel his heartbeat. It gets faster the longer y’all are smushed together

- honestly this probably happened on a mission and was a duck-for-cover gone wrong

- so he’s like. Mildly out of breath, his eyes are all intense from the fighting

- if you ask, the blush creeping up his neck is just from exertion, totally not because he can feel you pressed against him the way he’s imagined so often

- he wants the moment to last, wants to keep looking down at you but there is a mission and he is the golden boy

Cypher

- this one also happened on a mission

- cypher was set up for surveillance and had covered his hiding spot to hell and back with tripwires and cages

- thoughtful you went to go check on him, tripped about 48 times, and narrowly avoided stepping on a piece of his equipment

- in the process of Not Dying, you end up knocking cypher against the wall

- and hoooooooo man if that doesn’t do it for him a little bit

- fr tho he is.. well he’s cypher so he’s gonna be suave and be grateful he wears a mask so you can’t see his dopey smile because cmon that was kinda endearing

- doesn’t mean you can’t hear it in his voice as he teases you tho

- “you should really look where you’re going habibi”

- he likes seeing your eyes this close, he thinks they’re beautiful

Chamber

- you and chamber were having a petty argument about weapon design whilst walking down the hallways of the VP headquarters

- he’s passionate about it and thinks he knows better than you

- so to get your point across, you pull on his tie to bring his head close to yours

- you figured he’d keep his balance but poor chamber wasn’t expecting that at all and one hundred percent stumbles forward

- now you’re caught off guard and both of you end up crashing backwards into crates of supplies left in the hallway

- thankfully for chambers ego, he holds himself up against the crates so that he’s leaned over you and you’re trapped between his arms holding his tie like an idiot

- and because he is chamber, he flirts

- “if you wanted me closer, all you had to do was ask. Best not to make a mess, non?”

Yoru

- remember how in retake phoenix ziplines with his gun or whatever

- so he’s bragging about that and yoru is like “watch this” and tries to do it too but Cooler B)

- so a small group of you are gathered in the practice room, watching yoru zipline across the room

- except he slips 3/4 of the way down and crashes right into you

- y’all end up falling back into a cramped space meant to be rubble

- his pride- but also he’s worried about you because he did kind of just fall on you

- you’re fine, just a few lil scrapes

- the embarrassment on yoru’s face makes up for him falling on you

- he’s totally trying to brush it off, especially in front of you and the other agents, but you saw that genuine care he has for you

Omen

- you’re hunting around in one of the little supply closets on the base when omen teleports in

- he was looking for some of his yarn that he’d ordered and didn’t expect anyone else to be in the closet

- so he teleports in and jump scares you basically

- he catches you by instinct but the supply closet really was not made for more than one person to be in it at a time, especially with all the stuff in there

- it’s a little cramped but he feels too awkward to teleport out now. And also he wants his yarn

- this close, you can really see the way his slits get bigger and smaller repetitively, mimicking a kind of blinking

- his hands are cold too, where they’re on your shoulders to steady you

- bless his heart, he doesn’t know what to say except for a quiet “sorry”

- you laugh it off and ask him what he was looking for

- “yarn.”

- if you pay close attention you can see that his face slits are growing brighter than they usually do and some of his shadowy smoke seeps from under his hood

- you help him find his yarn but not before omen moves to stand in the doorway instead so you have space

- he flexes his claws as he watches you, a nervous habit he’s picked up over the years

- y’all have some idle chit chat about what he’s working on. Omen even offers to keep you company while you do whatever

Phoenix

- he trips and falls forward onto you

- it’s not graceful At All

- he’s kinda dumbfounded, holding himself up with his hands by your head

- 1. He’s embarrassed but 2. Holy shit he’s this close to you and the way you’re looking at him

- huh that’s weird the heater came on but only in the common room

- “you okay phoenix?”

- that snaps him out of his little moment and he scrambles back on his feet to help you up

- he apologises so much but really it’s fine, accidents happen! Still, he feels like he wants to make it up to you in some way

- you suggest watching a movie

- and if you snuggle a little closer during it, it’s just cos he’s warm and toasty ;)

Kayo

- it happens on the way back from a mission

- y’all are in the back of the vulture

- you’re behind Kayo cleaning gunk and dirt off of him when y’all experience some turbulence

- you were standing to clean him and end up getting jostled around

- you probs would’ve fallen on your face had he not reacted ultra fast and pulled you close to him

- you’re basically in his lap now

- like Phoenix, his body heats up and it’s totally just a robot thing, no other reason

- you’re startled, being this close to Kayo

- but since you’re here now, you start cleaning the front of him too

- this is what makes him short circuit lmao

- the fact that he’s fully capable of doing it himself but you’re cleaning him just to be nice

- the face you make in concentration, picking at a spot that won’t come off- that’s his new favourite face of yours. The way your eyebrows pull together a little, a bit of a nose scrunch as you peer closer

- he has never felt so cared for by a human before

Harbor

- some of the younger agents wanted to see harbors powers so he was showing off a little bit

- poor you turned the corner at just the right time to be smacked in the face by a wall of water

- okay he laughs a little bit but he is immediately apologising

- he pulls you behind him to a bathroom and gets a towel to dry you off

- you just kind of let him dry at least your head off. You’ll go change into different clothes after

- he’s very meticulous in drying you off and when he gets to your hair he ruffles it with the towel

- you shriek and try to duck away from him but he is having way too much fun with this

- he finally stops when you put your hands over his and damn that big stupid smile on his big stupid face

- “you look like a wet sewer rat”

- you fake gasp and try to hold back a smile

- and harbor is just thinking about how he could get addicted to seeing that

Breach

- one of his arms came off during a mission so you’re hanging out with him in his room while kj fixes it

- he gets up to get smth but doesn’t realise how off balance he is without the other arm. I mean those things have gotta be fuckin Heavy

- so he instantly starts tilting over and then you shoot up to help balance him

- but he’s too far gone and now you’re falling with him

- at least you land on his chest which is softer than a metal arm

- he’s kind of at a loss for words though and the fact that you’re basically laying on top of him does not help his brain function

- for once he has nothing to say

- which is only worrying to you

- “are you ok? That looked like it hurt. Sorry for falling on you too”

- he’s totally fine except for not being able to get that image of you out of his head

- he totally imagines you cuddling up to him while sleeping now

Brimstone

- not to be an old man but he definitely got a sharp knee pain and stumbled

- you made him sit down so you could make sure he was ok, that it wasn’t bruised or anything after a mission

- he’s fine just aging but the thought makes him feel fuzzy inside

- he tries to reassure you he’s okay but you seriously insist on taking him to see sage or Skye just to make sure there’s nothing wrong

- he secretly adores how doting you can be and won’t complain if you stick close to him for a bit after

I saw Brimstone with the sunglasses in the key art for the Episode 7 Act 1 kickoff and got inspired to doodle him, but then that turned into doing all of my mains since I haven't done so yet.

Even though I play Brimstone by far the most in game, I fucking loooooooooveee the Initiators (specifically KAYO and Fade's) utility and their character designs, so they're by far my favorite agents in Valorant. Also, I really love the dynamic between Raze and KJ lore wise, and their utility in game is also pretty fun to use so I decided to learn them in case I needed to play Duelist/Sentiental

um no one asked but here’s some Val hcs I have:

killjoy knits and crochets, I like to think she learned this from a coworker at kingdom cause I think she’s a very creative person but can’t take a break for the life of her so crocheting and knitting is her way to be like all technical and stuff but take a nice break bc those activities (CAN BE) very relaxing

Raze can cook an amazing meal! I think she’s great at cooking and makes these beautifully looking and tasting meal however I think she struggles with baking since with cooking she does what I call the Asian way of cook; she just goes with the vibes of the meal and gets the right ratios every time but baking is like a fine delicate art so like as much as she tries she just cannot bake.

Sova bakes like a fucking master this man will and can bake anything he’s like “oh you want this really intricate baked good? I gotchu” and makes it. like wtf

He’s also not a natural blonde he actually has black brownish hair (it’s either a brownish black or a very very dark brown that looks black sometimes) and on this note he helps all the agents dye their hair when asked like he normally helps jett but sometimes gekko is lazy and asks for help, neon asks for help with the underdye she has, sometimes he helps yoru and fade too!

Phoenix gifts people cologne and perfume I have no reasoning for this other than I think it’s funny but he means it very well and gets the most fitting scents for everyone

sage cannot keep a plant alive for the life of her. She tries to hard but they all keep on dying some how. she gets distraught about it because everyone assumes she can and gets her plants but she can’t.

Skye regularly holds wood carving lessons at the protocol, all agents have stopped by at least once and she keeps everyone’s first attempt. Breach, Gekko, Killjoy, Raze, and Omen are the most frequent.

Yoru is very good at styling hair and will always give a hand to his fellow agents if needed, albeit reluctantly and constantly complaining. Sage and Skye don’t hear his complaints though.

Astra is pretty much the protocols 2nd mother. As much as everyone jokes sage is the mom, Astra does her part in watching over everyone! She helps out with minimal tasks, offers help to everyone, checks up on people and makes sure they’re doing alright, yells at people to take breaks (cypher, killjoy, sage, brimstone), keeps up a positive and lovely atmosphere and keeps everyone in line when needed!

K/AYO holds a game night every thursday night for everyone! Usually board games, sometimes video games. He has written very specific rules including: no playing Mario kart, Uno, and sorry. Monopoly is fine as long as no one gets into a fight. (He def has more, but these are the ones in BOLD)

Sova, Skye, and breach go on morning jogs together regularly! Others are free to join them! Fade and Deadlock tend to join them every now and then.

Deadlock and Sova r very much sibling energy but on a more chill level.

Gekko’s crew helps around the base a BUNCH. Wingman helps sage a lot, dizzy helps in the kitchen, thrash helps at the range, and mosh is very much emotional support.

On that note Jett and Neon ask jokingly for a therapist to be hired, Brimstone actually considers it every time because some people here are concerning then turns it down due to it being a security hazard.

Brimstone has a little box for people to put requests into: these requests can be about anything. Raze has asked for a free for all or team death match style of paintball! Viper, kj, cypher, and breach always ask for more equipment. Some agents ask for hobby stuff, trips, or group bonding. He goes through them every week and if it’s urgent like fixing something, they normally tell him or sage straight up.

Everyone in the protocol don’t really talk about their past, like ever. However, if the moment is right, they’ll drop a bomb to make a story or lesson really stick. Sova dropped the fact he has 5 sisters when Jett and Phoenix got into a fight and he had to tell them to quit it or else he’d make them hand write apologies together and stick them into a shirt like his sisters did to him and his younger sister. silly stuff like that nothing serious yk.

Also on the note of Sova (can you tell hes on of my favs) I don’t think he HATES cypher, just dislikes the fact he’s so secretive yet will through out information about others. He feels as if it’s hypocritical and dislikes this. idk if I explained this very well and can go more into detail it’s kinda fun I like cyberowl a lot !!

Harbor also realllyyy likes pottery, he’s a historian yk and sees a bunch of artifacts and pots that are from decades ago. He’s learned how to replicate and learned how respective periods made their pots/anything else clay related!! he’s very much into historical accuracy of how artistic things are made (ie paintings, clothes, pottery, and more)

Im half awake so the harbor one is a little wild but yeah if u want more lmk I got plenty.

being protocol's "little sibling"

notes: the agents are sorted into categories based on how i thought they would act (you can talk about how i did in the comments), some have special headcanons, some don't + the woodworking class and the morning jogs thing with skye is apparently something she actually does, according to the val wiki

congrats! (regardless of your age) you're the little sibling in the protocol family! :)

responsible older siblings: brimstone, sage, sova, skye 

these people will always be looking out for you and your best interests. they're not really the type to allow you to get into trouble and are serious about setting a good example. this doesn’t mean they don't have fun with you (sova definitely does with archery and his owl drone), it's just that their idea of fun is a lot more restricted. they'll let you get away with a few things at most.

skye only allows you to get into trouble with her creatures. if she catches you doing anything you're not supposed to (or if she just chooses to invoke her power as an older sibling), she’ll probably make you take her woodworking class and participate in her morning runs.

sova and skye are more lenient than brimstone and sage, as you could probably guess.

if you pester him enough, sova would eventually give in with a heavy sigh and try to keep you from getting caught if you're up to something. he swears he won't let it happen again… until you give him puppy dog eyes, exploiting his one soft spot.

older siblings who do not care/are too busy to: viper, chamber, and (bonus) omen

nuff said. jk, they just…have looking after a younger sibling on a much lower priority than most other things, whether it be experimenting in the lab or working on gun design. that, or they just don't care in the first place. don't expect any family bonding time from them.

honorary mention: omen, but idk, he just kind of seems like a hit or miss with a younger sibling. he would probably be too preoccupied with figuring out his whole situation to take care of someone else. he may not even know how to express his consideration outside of knitting them something.

teasing/immature older siblings: phoenix, cypher, breach, jett, raze, astra

they relentlessly pick on you (in a lighthearted way), but at the end of the day, you're still their younger sibling. they'd never let anyone else outside of protocol talk to you like that. they do a lot of dumb stuff with you and pretty much enable tons of idiotic stuff. even though they're not the best role models, they sure do let you have fun.

cypher makes sure you eat well and keeps you out of trouble for the most part, but he'll bend a couple of rules for you. like sova, he'll keep you from getting caught, but sometimes, unlike sova…he’ll just partake as well.

phoenix, jett, and raze all must have babysitters of their own when watching you. they cannot be trusted.

cool older siblings: cypher, reyna, killjoy, yoru, astra, fade, neon, jett, and (bonus) phoenix

they let you get away with most stuff, and they end up being that sibling that you want to model yourself after because you're just so amazed at everything they do.

killjoy is mostly working in the lab (and in that way kind of goes in the ‘too busy to care’ category), but occasionally, she appears and gives you little robots to keep you company. then, she blips out of existence for another year. jk, she tries to spend time with you and teach you everything she knows in her lab, even if you don't understand half of what she's saying.

i was gonna put yoru in the teasing/immature category, but he's really just the teasing part of it. he's kind of ruthless with it. he wants to look cool and succeeds most of the time, and he’s not as immature as some of the people in there (phoenix in particular).

the other agents would certainly stick up for you, but these are the people who would kill for you if it came down to it…that may be a bit of a stretch for some, but they’ll definitely take all precautions when it comes to your safety and would go a step further when actually defending you.

kay/o MAY go in the category with viper and chamber, but honestly, after losing brimstone (who he was obviously very close to), i would imagine that he's learned how to care and have close relationships with others, including a familial one with you. and he doesn’t want to lose you too.

neon may not seem like she's on the same level as the other people here, but she is still really passionate about her family and may not be able to control herself and her anger when it comes to you.

yoru can obviously fight, and if he finds out that someone other than him (and the protocol, he guesses) is being mean to you, they're getting those hands.

cypher and fade are definitely going to be revealing all the secrets and fears of people who hurt you. only if you want them to, though. 

omen, as i said, is a hit or miss, but if he does care, he cares deeply, and he’ll do everything in his power to give your enemies a nightmare.
