You know what?

I actually fucking hate COVID conscious spaces, messaging, groups. I hate being COVID conscious. I hate masking, I hate contact tracing and taking precautions. I hate waiting after exposure to a sick person for 3-4 days for their PCR to come back. I hate learning about COVID, I hate thinking about it, I hate asking people for accomodations, I hate needing to be careful.

I'm still gonna fucking mask. I'm still gonna be considerate of people's needs. I'm still taking precautions.

But it's fucking sucks. It's not fun. I tried to make it fun, to desire it, to be a maskfluencer type. But it's traumatic, exhausting, it's giving me burnout.

I think it's important to be honest about this. I cannot tell you how many times people have justified their choice not to mask with "It's uncomfortable," "I don't like it," "Masks give me a headache." A way of framing it as an individual preference instead of a necessary public health intervention.

You know what? Me too buster. I would rather never mask again. For awhile I felt fondness, safety, even comfort and love when seeing other people mask, an expression of love. I don't shame anyone who has learned to desire the changes they've had to make.

But some days I am so utterly exhausted with being a Cassandra. I'm not above a burger and fries with the homies late at night. I miss what we had. Freely eating in cafes. God, I love kitchen culture. I miss restaurants, the cultural exchange the nightlife, the clubs. I REALLY miss live music. I miss being in a teeming crowd and feeling exhilaration rather than terror or apprehension or soil weariness at all the unmasked faces. I miss believing in people. I hate that most people have become Plague Rats. I don't want to preach at them. I don't feel morally superior anymore. I feel exhausted, heartbroken, grieving the way the world felt before the global pandemic.

COVID conscious people could really stand to strengthen our position by actually divorcing it from identity, and moral posturing.

Dawg this shit sucks. It's just what we gotta do. Let's keep it real.

Maybe a better messaging campaign in America would be: Don't be a Pussy. Wear a Mask. Viruses don't care about your feelings. Real Men protect the Immunocompromised. Public Health is Badass. Conquer your demons:wear a mask.
