Highland communities are known for their rich and distinctive textiles, mostly made from yak hair or brightly dyed sheep wool. Here, the women of Lingshi, in their bright fur hats and iconic striped capes, perform a traditional song.

National  Bird

Raven (Corvus corax tibetanus) is locally known as Jarogi, and it was once a capital crime in Bhutan to kill one. Ravens are even known to nest in the walls of the nation's monasteries and Dzongs. National Flower 

Blue Poppy (Meconopsis grandis) Prain which grows at high altitudes of the alpine meadows of Himalayas, is the national flower of Bhutan. Despite its pretty and delicate appearance the blue poppy has the power to endure harsh weather, especially winter, and blooms to its full beauty in spring. 

National Animal 

Takin (Budorcas taxicolor whitei) an extremely rare bovid mammal of the ovine-caprine family. It lives in herds in the steepest and most thickly wooded declivities of native mountains at an altitude of 4,000 meters (over 13,125 feet), and eats bamboo. It can weigh as much as 250 kilograms (550 pounds)

National Tree 

Cyprus (Cupressus corneyana) is locally known as Tsenden. It is considered sacred and is often associated with religious places. It’s ability to grow in inhospitable soil and its strong and straight structure is believed to be akin to the element of simplicity, hardiness and bravery in the people of Bhutan 

People 

A majority of the Bhutanese are homogenous groups divided linguistically into Sharchops, Ngalon and Lhotsampa. There are a number of smaller groups such as the Bumthap in Bumthang, Tshangla in the east, Layapa in the north-west, Brokpa in the north-east and Doya in the south-west. 

Arts and Crafts

Zorig Chussum refers to the 13 traditional visual arts and crafts that have been practiced for generations. These arts are expressed through; painting, carving, sculpture, calligraphy, carpentry, gold, silver and black smithing, bamboo work, weaving and embroidery, pottery, masonry, paper and incense production. 

Sports

The national sport of Bhutan is archery. Other traditional sports include Degor, resembling shot put and Khuru, a kind of outdoor dart game and wrestling. These traditional sports , especially Bhutan archery festival are imbued with communal, religious and commercial significance. International sports such as soccer, basketball, volleyball martial arts, cricket, tennis and table tennis are also popular.

Ara 

Ara is a traditional indigenous alcoholic beverage of Bhutan. It is generally distilled from wheat and has water-clear appearances like that of vodka or Japanese sake. It is something you should try in your Bhutan Cultural Tour

Ara is either served neat or served with scrambled egg- fried in butter topped up with clear ara on special occasions. 

Ara, the local brew, is served at social gatherings, during childbirth, religious festivals, and even during death rituals. Thing is, if a Bhutanese serves you a cup of ara, you will have to take a second helping too. That’s tradition! 

Ara is also made from rice, millet, barley; and different grains produce different flavors and aromas.

Ara is a traditional indigenous alcoholic beverage of Bhutan. It is generally distilled from wheat and is clear and light in color like vodka or Japanese sake. 

Ara, the local brew, is served during childbirth, religious festivals, and even during death rituals. Thing is, if a Bhutanese serves you a cup of ara, you will have to take a second helping too. That’s tradition!

Chilies 

Chilies are a necessity in Bhutan and are consumed in huge quantities. In fact, the national dish is “Ema-Datshi”, a chili and cheese stew, taken with a mountain of rice. And yes, the hotter the better!

It is something you should try in your Bhutan Homestay.

Chugo 

The Bhutanese are known to be hardy, mountain people. No wonder, chugo is a staple in their snacks list. Chugo is dried cheese, made from yak milk, and as tough as nails to the teeth. Try it if you dare!

Doma

Doma is very much loved by the Bhutanese/ both men and women alike love it especially in winter because it helps them keep warm they say! It’s the Bhutanese central heating system!
