Exploring Emerging Trends: Enigmatic Reddish Brown Wig
Fashion transcends mere attire; it embodies a proclamation, a manifestation of one’s identity. Within the realm of fashion, evolution transpires swiftly, not only in sartorial choices but also in coiffures. Two phrases currently gaining momentum in the style sphere are “deep wave brazilian hair” and “reddish brown wig.”
Let us embark on an expedition into the universe of fashion to delve into…
st patrick's day at a daycare with such a disproportionate number of redheaded kids is hilarious bc ill be reading a book about leprechauns and all the kids are going "that's X!! that one is Y!!"
Some Christines donning three fairly different wigs
KIMILEE BRYANT: For her Basel run (left) she wore a big, bushy early European style. When joining the early US tour (middle) those wig also had elements of bushy, but they were more fitted around the head. This is similar to what she also wore in Toronto (not depicted). For her final Broadway run (right) she wore the more ringley-y style.
SIERRA BOGGESS: For her original Las Vegas run (left) she wore a wig with lots of volume over the temples, and ringley-y curls. For her later Broadway runs (not depicted) the wigs also had ringlets, but they were lower over the forehead. For one specific photoshoot she was also fitted with a wig with no forehead curls (middle). For the RAH celebrations (right) she wore a fairly classic UK look, but with looser and bigger curls - which sadly deflated during the performance, so here's one from the beginning of the show... She also wore a curlier UK wig for the Classic Brit Award (not depicted), and a similar wig with bigger and softer curls for the alas cancelled Paris run (also not depicted).
CLAIRE LYON: For her initial World Tour run (left) she wore the large-curled dark wig with defined drapes over the forehead/sides. For her second World Tour run (middle) she was fitted with a more UK styled wig with lighter drapes and small forehead curls, but with large and soft curls in the locks. A similar, albeit shorter and less curly look, was worn for her surprise emergency cover in the Restaged Aussie Tour (right).
HARRIET JONES: Oh the lady of many wigs! For her initial West End run (not depicted) she wore a pre-raphaelite like wig with long auburn locks with loose curls. Later during her West End run (left) she wore a similar wig with slightly more brown teint and tighter curls. When she joined the Greek-soon-to-be-Middle-East-tour production (middle) her wig was styled similar to her original West End wig, but blonde and without forehead curls. For her current run (right) she wears a shorter blonde wig with side-parted hair and tight curls.
GEORGIA WILKINSON: When she was in the Sydney Harbour production she both understudied Christine and stunted as the double. She wore what I think was the same dark brown wig, but sometimes seen with fairly loose big curls (left) and sometimes with tighter curls (not depicted). I assume this was due to humidity. When she joined the Greek/Middle East tour (middle) she first donned a long, sleek blonde wig similar to that of Harriet Jones, but platina blonde. Later on she too was fitted with a shorter, curlier wig with side-parted styling over the forehead (right).
BRIDGET COSTELLO: Her brown West End wig (left) was usually tightly curled and with defined curls over the forehead. A similar style was worn for the Restaged Aussie Tour (middle) but with less forehead curls and looser, bigger locks. For the Middle East Tour she wears a a shorter blonde side-parted with with tight curls, in the vein of Harriet Jones and Georgia Wilkinson.
HANNA-LIINA VõSA: She is the only Christine on the list who's never done the replica version yet she's managed to don three different wigs! For her initial Estonian run (left) she wore a short, blonde wig with side-parted hair and tight curls. For her first Finnish run (middle) she wore a reddish blonde wig with middle-parted hair and loose curls. For her second Finnish run (right) her wig was brighter red, with side-parted hair and more defined curls.
AMY MANFORD: For her West End run (left) her wig was brown, with defined forehead curls and tightly curled locks. Her Restaged Aussie Tour wig (middle) was also brown, but sleeker in look and without forehead curls. For her Greek run (right) she donned a blonde wig, but in styling not too unlike her West End wig.
(note: this is not a complete list, just those I had good photos of)
My JLY34, Lena, has been in my collection for over a decade at this point. Her hair is getting quite frizzy and thinned out, but I’d feel bad replacing her wig- she’s not a very common doll, and I’m not too fond of any of the auburn or brown wigs that exist out there on places like etsy. So for now she exists in my collection as is. Though I’d love to potentially give her a makeover someday!
A modern Wangxian au where someone framed Wei Ying, making it look like he was responsible for a big fire(explosion) at a Christmas Party that all major companies were invited to. Yanli was severely injured, but okay.
Since then, Wei Ying hid in the shadows, trying to find who or what organization was behind it. Everyone assumed he ran away, not wanting to face punishment.
Years later, Lan Zhan, an on-duty (undercover) officer tracked a suspicious person to a museum. Just as chaos breaks out, someone slams into him, knocking them both down. It's a woman with ankle-length auburn hair and a face full of makeup. Her eyes are honey-comb in color, but her expression is full of shock.
She looks familiar.
Heart-achingly familiar.
Instead of chasing after the suspect (at this point the fire alarm is going off, proof that someone set it off to escape as water is spraying from the sprinklers), he instead chases after this woman who's now running away from him. She kicks her heels off, even so, Lan Zhan should've been able to catch her. There's only been one person he hadn't been able to catch.
Finally he catches the woman, mainly because her feet are now bleeding from the streets. He pins her to the wall, makeup half washed off from the sprinklers, wet hair sliding off, revealing a wig.
They're both out of breath, exhausted, yet Lan Zhan pulls the wig off, seeing long dark brown hair in a flattened bun.
"Lan Zhan, who knew you'd turn out to be so pervy?"
That voice - his entire soul froze in disbelief.
Wei Ying. This was without a doubt Wei Ying, the one he had fallen in love with, the one who had falsely been blamed, the one who went missing eight years back. His cheeks were sunken in, an obvious sign of lack of nutrition.
And his voice, so recognizable, yet so much softer and lighter than before.
"Wei-" Said man pressed a finger to his lips, glancing nervously around them.
"They're probably listening. Would a strong, strapping man like you escort this feeble maiden home?" Lan Zhan rose an eyebrow in disbelief, only making Wei Ying smirk more. "It's the least you can do for making me lose my shoes!"
.... there was so much he wanted to say, so much he wanted to comment on, but Wei Wuxian was very intelligent. If he said someone might be listening, he was probably right.
"Apologies. I mistook you for someone else." Not a lie. He didn't know who this was when he gave chase.
Without hesitation he swept Wei Ying into his arms, carrying him bridal style. A deep (adorable) red stained those pale cheeks as those eyes fluttered in disbelief, revealing a little bit of his natural silver eyes now that his contacts were slightly askew.
"A-ah, you don't have to carry me! Put me down!"
"No," he simply said, tightening his grip when he felt the other squirm. "I am doing as you asked. I'm escorting the feeble maiden who shouldn't be on her feet."
Lan Zhan follows Wei Ying's instructions, driving him to a shady looking bar that's three stories high. Normally he would assume his friend just wanted to drink, but this felt different.
They enter through the back, the kitchen staff looking up at them in shock. Wei Ying let his hair loose, waving to everyone and - was he using sign language?!
The employees sign back, looking both worried and relieved.
Eventually Wei Ying whispered "there's stairs to the left," and he carried him up to what looked like a large living room. Someone was playing a piano, a walking stick propped up against the wall near him, and a child slept peacefully on the couch. Wei Ying motioned for him to go up the next set of stairs, leading him to a small den that had been transformed into a room.
"When did you learn sign language?"
"Ahahaha, well, there's a lot you don't know about me, Lan Zhan." And it was true. All around the room were Styrofoam heads sporting different kinds of wigs, both male and female. Dozens of non-prescription contacts boxes were tossed all over. Clothes were thrown haphazardly in one of the corners, forcing them both to sit on the bed. This obviously wasn't Wei Ying's first time wearing a disguise.
"I saw a suspicious person go through an employees only door the day of the party, and instead of saying something, I ran after them. They noticed and ran, which made me give chase. He ran by the kitchen and hit a switch, and everything went black"
"Why didn't you tell that to the police?"
Wei Ying blinked up at him with a sad smile. "You think I didn't?" Lan Zhan didn't understand. The responding officers were good friends of theirs, people who have been friends with their family since they were little. They knew Wei Ying. Might not have been fond of him, but knew he would never do such a thing. Yet Wei Ying wouldn't lie about this either.
"They nearly killed me, Lan Zhan. They hunted me down, even used their damned hell hounds. They wanted me dead so they could pin the whole blame on me without further investigation. That's when I met them, my new family."
Wen Qing and Wen Ning were out shopping when someone tried to rob a now blind Wen Ning. Unable to stand by, Wei Ying swooped in and stopped them. After that, they kept running into each other. Eventually he learned the Wens had been at the same Christmas Party and Wen Ning had suffered a nasty head injury, resulting in blindness. Hearing he was searching for the one responsible, they teamed up.
From there, they gathered their savings and bought this rundown building, turning it into a bar. It brought them business and income without the attention. They also got to chose their hours. Most of then Wens who stayed with them had disabilities such as being mute, blind, or deaf.
"It's... been a long time since I've had a long conversation like this." Wen Qing was fine, however she was hardly home, always taking shifts at the hospital to give them a steady income when the bar was slow.
Lan Zhan, against Wei Ying's protests, helps clean and wrap his feet, agreeing to work together to find the one responsible and clear his name.
"He knows I'm on his trail. He's planning something, something big. We can't let him succeed this time."
And so Lan Zhan escorts a beautiful woman around town, one who's mute (which is so ironic since Lan Zhan couldn't get him to shut up when they were growing up), and when Wei Ying feels mischievous, he arrives at meet up locations in a different wig and a completely different kind of outfit, giggling as people start spreading rumors that Lan Zhan has turned into a player.
That's all I have so far XD Hope you guys like it! Just a shower idea
9/10/23: Some hair/wardrobe updates for some of our girls.
Harrow's wig came! It's the Ardyn made by ZaZouCustomDolls (they can also be found on Etsy, eBay, and etc.). It's definitely more in keeping with the Harrow the Ninth book cover and Harrow's post-Lyctoral hairdo than her penchant for buzz-cutting, but let's be real, if I'm paying for a wig I want it to actually involve hair, and that's just cuter. As you can see, it's appropriately skrunkly.
She's also wearing the Snowflake Jumper that was available from 1998-2001; it's the most "nunlet" outfit that exists in the American Girls canon, imo, and is her unofficial "meet" outfit.
Dulcie's "meet" outfit also came! It's made by sewwitchy (the design, or a similar one, is available in other fabrics as well). I really appreciate the amount of Little Women-influenced doll clothes out there, I have to say, and I love this particular design for Dulcie becaues it's femme without being too frothy; if you made this outfit in different fabric it would be practically Dark Academia instead of cottagecore, and that's the real Dulcie Septimus for you. She's wearing the shoes from Rebecca's movie outfit.
Her wig, by the way, is a PurplePlumWigs design (they can also be found on eBay), the Alice in auburn brown. (Was it named Alice after Alice Cullen? Maybe, and that's fine by me. Alice is the most valid Cullen by a mile!) It looks so much like the wig I have when I, as a human, cosplay Dulcie, and that makes me smile.
Abigail still needs a new wig, but she got a new dress (made by anniesetc2006) and some glasses!
Why did they give Joe a wig though? Is that normal for Phantom?
Most Raouls wear their own hair, unless their hair is not long enough for the standard-ish "swoopy romantic side part" Raoul style. So that means that even though the design and Steve Barton had straight-ish blond hair, there have been ginger/auburn, dark haired, curly-haired, and even touch of grey haired Raouls. Because the majority of the time, they do wear their own hair, but maybe have fake sideburns, although some like Jordan Donica and Tomas Ambt Kofod grow their own. But some Raouls have been bald or balding or had greying hair or I think David Shannon had cornrows at one point 🙄, so the wigs department gave those actors a wig.
Joe Griffiths-Brown has a more modern undercut style of hair IRL right now, so that's probably why they gave him a wig.
But for completeness, there have been 6 black Raouls (Liam Tamne, Jordan Donica, Jemal Felix, Callum Francis, Lewis Francis and now Joe Griffiths-Brown) and about half of them have worn wigs.
AFAIK Liam Tamne (London 2014-2015) wore his own hair but I would have to go really digging through his Instagram/Twitter to find pictures of him in his "civilian life" besides that tiny blurry one from almost a decade ago.
Jordan Donica didn't wear a wig for either his 2016 run (left) or his 2022 run (center and right). Which led to him becoming the first replica Raoul with a ponytail.
Jemal Felix wore a wig as an understudy from 2021-2022 (first pic was from a dress rehearsal)
And in the non replica Australian Sydney Harbor production, Callum Francis and Lewis Francis both wore wigs with a very dramatic side part. But when Lewis Francis continued as an understudy in the Australian restaged tour, he wore his own hair and not a wig.
and i'm not even covering the old raoul wigs that they all wear. i know jordan donica didn't have an old raoul wig that matched his natural texture in his first run, lewis francis did have in the restaged tour, and i've typed all i can about raoul wigs and all i can hear is this song
I need to test something here. There is a correct answer and I'll make my argument at the end of the poll.
Also I know that "reddish brown" and "auburn" can be used interchangeably but according to the definition auburn is mostly red hair with brown tones and reddish brown would be mostly brown hair with red tones. I also know that her hair color varies in episodes depending on which wig is being used but we're not copping out of this one.

Pidge stares at Bridgit’s handiwork, the cerulean blue, micron-thin crescents applied high on each of her cheekbones, set back beneath the corners of her eyes. Elongated pointed ears, silicone prosthetics, are seamlessly attached to her rounded human ears. All in all, the makeup artist’s work is masterful, transforming boyish Pidge “Katie” Holt into a space-elf princess.
The constellations of freckles on her cheeks have been smoothed away by a flawless application of foundation; Pidge’s large honey-brown eyes made even more dramatic by Bridgit’s meticulous application of color, largely earth-tones, but with a touch of opalescent green. Her short hair, which normally bristles from her head giving her the appearance of a startled hedgehog, has been pinned close to her skull and is covered by a long wig. The color, at least, is her own, sandy brown chased with auburn with bright ribbons of blue and green interwoven into the long locks.
“Wow,” says Pidge.
Bridgit beams proudly, and rightfully so as it took no small effort to transform one boyish girl genius into a princess. The rest, however, is now up to Pidge.
Not for the first time she wonders, How did I get myself into this?
Katie Hall started as u/s Christine in West End in June 2008. She was and is one of the youngest Christines out there, cast at 16 and performing at 17. Photos from those days shows her with a light brown (almost auburn) and very curly wig.
She left around 2010, but returned as alternate Christine in autumn 2011, and remained so for a few months. Photos from her alternate run shows her with a sleeker and slightly more auburn wig.
She then left to prepare for originating the role of Christine in the Restaged UK Tour, opening in February 2012 and running until May 2013.
Further involvement in POTO includes being a Christine double and "surprise Il Muto maid" in the RAH celebrations in 2011.

Struck by the enthusiasm of the moment, I used nail polish remover to remove most of the brown-haired Katie's lip color and did a preliminary hack-off of her snarled and frazzled locks.
This specific doll is cuter as a little boy.
I tried the smallest of my extra wigs from wigging Cinderelsa, and while it fit, it gave me a little girl with chin-length hair, which is not the vision for this doll. This is a little boy.
So I went looking for flocking.
Good grief.
Flocking apparently had a moment circa 2017, the exact moment when I needed no flocking at all. That moment is long past.
After considerable gnashing of teeth about how it should not be this difficult to buy a small vial of auburn flocking, my fourth visit to Restore Dolls' site turned up Titian color, and I decided to spring for shipping, which is much cheaper than I'd braced myself for. It's more flocking than I need, but it opens the possibility of extending Kelsey's family with thrift finds who get fresh titian buzz cuts.
While enjoying the new Quiet Hour at Walmart and failing to find flocking, I picked up plain colored fat quarters appropriate for pants and some solid-colored baby socks for sweaters for smaller dolls.
Planning to dress a boy Katie made appallingly clear how much of sewing is built around ideals of frilly girlishness. Ordinarily, I'd be on the train of "boys can like florals too!" But after presenting as a girl for 30 years, Kyle is eager to wallow in stereotypical boy things. As compensation for likely giving him a pretty boring first outfit, I picked up a set of earth-moving vehicles for him at Dollar Tree.
