Thank you to everyone who has read this chapter. Please let me know what your thoughts are. I'd love to hear your feedback. Thank you once again.
In the world of secret societies for underground criminals, there's a secret place for criminals to stay, a shop for criminals to buy their weapons, basically, criminals live like normal people but they can only go to places that are built for criminals.
That's the rule.
There's also a particular psychiatrist for criminals only. Since many of the criminals have demons in their minds.
For this job, Dr. Ben is the only person the criminals could go to and ask for advice and medicine so they could go to sleep. Most of them can sleep.
But the only person who has trouble is Bucky Barnes.
His name is enough to make everyone in the underworld shiver. His eyes are enough to make his opponents freeze.
Bucky is their answer if anyone wants a job done without any mistakes.
With the money from the job he finished, he could have a comfortable life for generations. But he doesn't need it because all he wants right now is to sleep.
"I tried what you told me. Work out until I'm tired, learn something new, clean all my weapons, upgrade my car, renovate my house with bulletproofing, sex," Bucky said while he lay on the couch, looking at the ceiling.
Dr. Ben kept writing while listening to his patient.
"I even went to pottery class, baking class, painting class, and sex," Bucky counted on his fingers.
"Still. Nothing works. I still can't sleep. It's been 7 years," Bucky said.
Dr. Ben, who kept writing, replied, "Yeah, you have mentioned sex multiple times."
"White noise, pink noise. In the end, I smashed the Bluetooth speaker. None of your methods work," Bucky said as he sat up and glared at Dr. Ben.
Dr. Ben adjusted his reading glasses. He remained calm, probably one of the few people not afraid even though Bucky was angry.
He clicked his pen and put the report on the table.
"Do you want to try reading fairy tale books?" Dr. Ben asked.
Bucky pinched the bridge of his nose. "Are you joking with me?"
Dr. Ben replied, "Most of you people have a shitty childhood. Have shitty parents. Perhaps deep down, your kind wants something related to fulfilling your inner child."
Bucky exclaimed, "Woah, doctor, calm down. You're brutally honest here." He sighed, because he knew this method will failed like the rest. "Fine. I'll try." Then he lay back on the couch and closed his eyes.
Dr. Ben picked a children's book and started to read, he flipped through the pages, and began to read aloud, "Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a brave little mouse named Timothy."
"Timothy was no ordinary mouse," Dr. Ben continued, "for he possessed a heart as courageous as a lion and a determination that could move mountains."
"Stop. Stop. It's so weird listening to you. Get someone else," Bucky interrupted, feeling uncomfortable.
Dr. Ben closed the book. "I'll get my apprentice."
Bucky raised an eyebrow. "You've got a new one?" He knew that none of Dr. Ben's employees stayed that long, given the fear of criminals who kept coming for therapy.
Dr. Ben adjusted his glasses. "She could tame Bruce Banner; I think she could do the same to you."
Bucky rolled his eyes. "Fine."
Dr. Ben got up from his seat and opened his office door. "Y/N, help me for a bit," he called out.
Bucky heard a melodious voice respond, "Yes?"
The door swung open, revealing a woman with a confident stride and a calm demeanor. She had striking eyes that seemed to hold a depth of understanding, framed by a cascade of dark hair that fell gracefully around her shoulders.
Her posture exuded poise and assurance, hinting at a quiet strength within. She carried herself in professional attire with an air of authority, yet there was warmth in her expression as she met Bucky's gaze.
As you approach your boss, he suddenly puts a children's book in your hand.
You look at him, puzzled. "Huh?"
Dr. Ben pointed at Bucky and explained, "This person can't sleep for years. So I want to see if reading a children's story could make him fall asleep."
Bucky huffs in frustration. As a top assassin in the underworld, it's humiliating if he can only fall asleep with a children's book. "Just do it."
You flinch, knowing the man in front of you is dangerous.
Dr. Ben pats your shoulder reassuringly. "Don't worry, he's just cranky. I'll be here too. I need to see if it's working or not."
"Okay," you respond, then sit in the chair near Bucky's couch.
Before opening the book, you can't help but notice the tattoos on his neck and hands.
"Are you done staring?" Bucky asks, irritation evident in his voice.
"Oh, right, I'm sorry," you apologize quickly. "I'll start reading. Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a brave little mouse named Timothy. Timothy was no ordinary mouse, for he possessed a heart as courageous as a lion and a determination that could move mountains."
As you continue reading, Bucky listens intently, his eyes focused on the ceiling as he tries to relax.
"Despite his small size," you continue, "Timothy dreamed of embarking on great adventures and proving himself to be the bravest mouse in all the land."
Bucky's tense expression begins to soften slightly as he listens to the soothing cadence of your voice.
"One day," you narrate, "a fierce dragon threatened the kingdom, causing panic among the inhabitants. But Timothy, undeterred by the danger, volunteered to confront the dragon and save his home."
Bucky's breathing starts to slow down as he gets engrossed in the tale, his earlier restlessness fading away.
"With unwavering courage," you go on, "Timothy faced the dragon, armed only with his wits and determination. And through his bravery and quick thinking, he managed to outsmart the fearsome beast and bring peace back to the kingdom."
As you reach the end of the story, Bucky's eyes grow heavy, and he finally begins to drift off to sleep, a sense of calm settling over him.
Dr. Ben watches silently, nodding in approval as he sees the story's effect on Bucky. It seems that, perhaps, there is power in the simplest of tales to soothe even the most troubled minds.
Bucky's eyes felt heavy. The childish story and your calm voice made him feel relaxed. Your voice seemed more effective than white noise in soothing his troubled mind. As he listened, the tension in his muscles gradually melted away, replaced by a sense of peace and tranquility.
Then Bucky opened his eyes, only to realize he wasn't in the same place in Dr. Ben's office anymore. He found himself on a bed inside an unknown room. Panic surged through him.
Had he been kidnapped?
It would bring shame to his name as the feared killer if true.
As he processed his surroundings, Bucky's hand instinctively went for his knife, ready to defend himself. But soon, he recognized the familiar surroundings of Dr. Ben's building. Relief washed over him, though he remained on edge.
A door creaked open, causing Bucky to tense, his grip tightening on the knife. But to his surprise, it was just Dr. Ben.
"Did you have a good sleep?" Dr. Ben asked calmly.
Bucky clicked his tongue in annoyance and massaged his shoulder. "No. Your methods didn't work. I'm still tired."
"Well, that's natural since you've been asleep for three days," Dr. Ben replied matter-of-factly.
Three days?!
He can't believe it, since he has only been able to sleep for one hour each night for the past seven years. Bucky's eyes widened in disbelief as he checked his phone, seeing the date and numerous missed calls and unread messages.
"It worked?" he muttered, incredulous. He had been able to sleep and hadn't even realized it.
Bucky's amazement lingered as he realized that he had slept for three whole days without even being aware of it. It was a stark contrast to the years of insomnia he had endured, struggling to find even a moment of rest.
The tension that had plagued his body for so long began to ebb away, replaced by a newfound sense of calmness and clarity. He couldn't deny the relief that washed over him, knowing that perhaps, just perhaps, there was hope for him yet.
Then, there was a knock on the door. It was you.
"How is he, doctor? Is he still asleep?" you asked, but you gasped when Bucky's intense gaze met yours.
Was he angry? Did he blame you for making him sleep for three days?
"Y/N, is it?" Bucky inquired.
You responded groggily, "Yes?"
Bucky got on his knees, his right hand resting on his left chest and his left hand reaching for you. He looked at you earnestly and asked, "Will you work for me?"
You were taken aback, as was Dr. Ben. Bucky's unexpected gesture felt like it could lead to a significant misunderstanding, resembling a proposal rather than a job offer.

You've mentioned many times how you think Hank is at his happiest and most fulfilled when he's with the Avengers, but why do you think that is? In-universe, I mean. Is it just how he gets along with certain Avengers as individuals? Is it about how the O5 knew him from a way younger age and now there's too much baggage? Is it about how one team exists for protecting the common people and the other for protecting our people, and there's different kinds of pressure that come with each? Is it about (and this one is maybe just a less generous read of the last one) how he's got unresolved issues regarding being a mutant and with the Avengers he can just ignore this?
I think the main reason why Hank thrives in the Avengers environment more than the X-Men is the difference in responsibility and expectation.
On the X-Men, Hank is their resident smart guy. You have a problem that needs fixed? Hank's your guy. Legacy virus? Hank will find a cure. Mutantkind's population has been destroyed and only a handful are left? Don't worry, Hank's on the case. Your powers are on the fritz? Hank will make it better for you. Need a spectacular invention for whatever reason? Call Hank! Hank is their resident doctor, teacher of students, engineer, mechanic, biochemist, physicist, culture critic, etc. Hank's most valuable commodity, the thing that makes him important and valuable to the team, is his intellect, and how he can use it to serve the X-Men and mutantkind as a whole.
And Hank does take on this responsibility... but I think he also resents the X-Men for it at times. That he's being pigeon-holed as a scientist, that he has to dedicate so much of his life and time to the X-Men.
It's why he reacts as badly as he does in that Trail issue of Bendis' Uncanny. He's given his whole life to these people, hasn't he? For the past few decades of his life, he's worked tirelessly to do everything that was needed for the X-Men and mutants to survive, and they thank him by embarrassing him in front of an entire student body of pupils he's taught. Yeah, never something that was going to go well.
Compared to Avengers, where he is at best, maybe 7 on the list of smart guys they have to solve something. Who is the resident genius? They usually have about two per team. Tony, T'Challa, Bruce Banner, Hank Pym, Bobbi Morse, Riri Williams, these are all different characters part of or associated with the Avengers who are geniuses and will help solve big problems. Hank isn't needed for his intellect. He's needed because they want him on the team. He adds an important role to the team dynamic, which can be stifling in its own way, don't get me wrong, but the weight of it is far less than it is on the X-Men. He instead gets to focus on levity and having fun and teasing Wanda and Simon and reading poetry and the likes.
It's not that he's never used as a smart guy; but the stakes are lower. If he fucks up then, they can probably speeddial Hank Pym or Bobbi or someone to come help and fix things. On the X-Men, where the consequences for failure is often making things materially worse either for his friends or mutants as a whole, the stakes are much higher.
But the other reasons you mentioned also influence why the Avengers is a more positive space for Hank. Certainly, if I was working and living with the people I'd known since high school where all of the same drama was still unfolding in its own way, just with more people to get involved, I'd want to get out of that situation as soon as too. No matter how much Hank loves the O5 and respects them and thinks highly of them, there is no way you can continue to essentially be perpetually trapped in your high school friend group without feeling stir crazy.
I think the Avengers being a more general space also appeals to Hank. Before Ben Percy, Hank was very much so a disciple of Charles' politics and perspective of mutants, which I've already talked about before on here are flawed and go hand in hand with his experience and struggles as a wheelchair user. It isn't that Hank is naïve to the struggles of mutants–he knows it better than almost anybody else, and he's worked insanely hard before in the past to make spaces for mutants–but he values different perspectives, I think, and his idea of a mutant community I don't think is a Mutant community, but a community where mutants are just one of a diverse group of people. Isolationist policies will never (or rather, should never) sit right with him, and with how insular the X-Men often are as a team, how often they stay confined to their own little corner of the Marvel Universe, I think it makes sense that Hank values how open the Avengers are regardless of origin, because I think in Hank's fantasy utopia in his head that's how things should be.
The thing is with Hank's feelings about his mutanthood and the Avengers is that, to be honest, Hank is probably more secure and comfortable in his skin as a mutant as an Avenger and Defender than he is as an X-Men. There's this issue of Avengers where Hank is dancing at a party with a woman, and this drunk guy gets incredibly angry and disgusted at Hank for, in his mind, stealing regular woman away from their own men. There's a confrontation, and Hank completely whoops the guy's ass and sends him into the wall and abjectly humiliates him, before going home in an understandably bad mood. X-Men Hank, while he would stand up for himself and call out bigotry when he sees it, I don't think would ever react physically the way Hank did there, because he is too aware of the optics of a non-human looking mutant hurting a non-mutant in public. He'll make fun of a bigot on live TV, but he won't hurt them, either. He keeps it under control. He feels like as a mutant in the public eye, he needs to be respectful and acceptable to a general audience.
Avengers Hank isn't as accepting. And it definitely isn't that being an Avenger means you can get away with more things like this than the X-Men can; Vision quite literally gets attacked by suicide bombers in Avengers, and Wanda and Vision's house gets burned down later in the series. The Avengers have never been a means of protecting yourself from bigotry, because it happens anyway. But I think the reason for this difference is because Avengers (and Defenders) Hank is not representing mutantkind as a whole. If he wants to do something for mutants, it's being done on his own terms, and not because if he does the wrong thing with an X, he sends a bad message not just to the larger non-mutant population, but to mutants too. It's why in the Whedon run it becomes a whole fight when he thinks about–doesn't even necessarily want to, just thinks about it–taking the mutant cure. Hank breaks ranks, he sends a message to every mutant in the world that taking a cure is preferable to looking non-human.
It isn't that Hank doesn't want to help mutants by representing them, but it needs to be something he chooses. Not something he is unwillingly participating in by virtue of having an X on his chest. He is perfectly willing to put himself out there when the time comes, but he also wants to be able to have a drink at a bar. You might be saying, "Well Brieuc, he's blue and furry, so people are always going to clock him as a mutant", and that's true, but I think with the Avengers and him fighting alongside Vision, who is also visibly nonhuman and acts far less ""human"" than Hank does, Vision sort of took a lot of that negative energy away. Hank might look like a blue ape man, but he laughs and might buy you a round of drinks and dances. Vision doesn't do any of that, and Vision is far less charming and personable than Hank is. Hank makes an effort in a conversation. Vision will just go through the floor and walk away if you're boring them.
The point being, while he is the only visible mutant on the Avengers, he's not the only person who doesn't look human, and I think that's another reason why he enjoys himself more. He feels more normal on the Avengers, because you have someone like Vision is so strange and off-putting that by comparison he's a regular man. On the X-Men, other than Kurt (and they've only been on the same team I believe twice in the history of X-Men), Hank is often the most mutated person on the team. He is the person most easily clocked as a mutant, and I think it's easy for him to internalise that fact, and to feel subconsciously resentful at his human-passing peers. Vs the Avengers, where he still is visibly a mutant, but he blends in more standing next to Vision, who is more of a mainstay on the team.
And to come to your first point for last, yeah, his experience on the Avengers probably wouldn't be nearly so positive if it wasn't for his best friend Simon. The Avengers could be a sadistic criminal organisation and I'm pretty sure Hank would still have positive things to say because he was doing it with his best friend, Simon Williams. He loves that man, and it stands out that when Simon left the Avengers, Hank did too, for a bit. His love for the Avengers is really his love for Simon, projected onto the whole team. Oh, he does genuinely like it there; but it's Simon's presence and friendship that changes things from a nice change of pace to objectively the best place for Hank to be. Simon's always brought out the best in Hank, and Simon is an Avenger, so that's where Hank is his best.

Planning a wedding with the man she loves and working small jobs with SHIELD seems like an easy task, but now that Jonathan is dead, Maggie and Steve have to continue tracking down HYDRA and cleaning up the mess left behind- which is easier said than done when the Winter Soldier has returned.

Masterlist Buy Me a Coffee
The steady beep of the monitor pulls me from the peaceful void of darkness, forcing me back to consciousness as I force my eyes open. The smell of antiseptic and an oddly sharp scent of clean drags me out of the peaceful void, and I turn my head to see Steve standing with a doctor, looking angry as he speaks with Helen Cho. I catch “blood loss” and “best we can" before the she notices me, rushing over to check the machine and my vitals.
“Maggie,” Steve breathes, relief flooding his previously furrowed features as moves closer, gripping my hand in his. “You’re ok, you’re safe.”
I swallow, brows furrowed as I try to sit up. “Where-”
“Hey,” He gently stops me, instead helping me carefully shift upright to more of a sitting position. “We’re back in New York, Tony was able to rush you back for surgery. You lost a lot of blood…”
“We almost lost you.” Dr. Banner says quietly, moving from the doorway to review what Cho checked. “If you’d been any later… Well, we were lucky to have Dr. Cho here to help. She was able to repair the cells so you could heal faster.”
I nod slowly, trying to process as I accept the small cup of water Steve hands me, a bit uneasy as I feel his gaze never leave my face. “Where’s Natasha and Wanda? Are they ok?”
“Everyone is fine,” He soothes, thumb gently stroking my knuckles. “They’re resting in their rooms.”
I release a breath I didn’t realize I was holding, finally able to relax knowing they’re ok. “Steve… We need to talk. About everything.”
He nods, eyes unreadable as his features harden a bit. “And we will. But right now, I care more about you and your health.” His hand gently brushes a strand of hair from my forehead. “I don’t want to interfere with you healing and getting better.”
“That’s not going to affect my health.” I say flatly, eyes narrowing a bit as I watch his mask slip back on- the Captain taking its place. “We’re not going to accomplish anything if we keep pushing it off.”
Steve releases a long breath. “… Alright. But give us a bit longer, just to make sure you’re stable. Please. When they almost lost you…” He swallows, shifting uncomfortably. “For my peace of mind. Then I promise we’ll talk.”
I nod, understanding the compromise- how much I scared him, all of them. “Deal.”
Bruce comes over to press a button, looking as distracted as usual as he jots things down in his notebook instead of the tablet Helen has. He never was able to fully swap to Tony’s tech, especially when he was so worried about the Hulk. “How’s Barnes? I saw he was cleared of all charges.”
“He’s fine.” Steve says dismissively, thumbs still stroking my knuckles like a lifeline. “I was stupid to be so worried with Tony and T’Challa. I was so scared to lose my best friend again... I let it ruin the life I have now.”
I swallow, still not fully convinced. “What are you really doing here, Steve?”
Bruce awkwardly clears his throat, mumbling how my condition is stable as he quickly excuses himself. Steve’s brows furrow as his face studies mine, features slowly sagging as he seems to realize I’m serious. “I wasn’t lying. You scared me, I thought I lost you. Seeing you there... I never want to be without you again.”
I swallow. “Steve...”
He shifts to kneel next to me, hands taking mine as he makes sure my eyes are on his. “I love you, Maggie. I will never let you go again.”
I release a breath, hands squeezing his. “We still need to talk. And work out everything, and probably talk to someone.”
He kisses my knuckles. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to have you back. I want you in my life, by my side, however you’ll have me.”
I blush, reaching to cup Steve’s cheek and relaxing once he leans into the touch. “I missed you, Steve...”
Steve smiles softly, turning to kiss my palm. “I missed you too. And there is someone determined to make sure I never forget it.”
“Bucky?”
He flushes a bit, looking a bit guilty. “The jerk never stopped asking about you. He wanted me to stay with you, but I was too stubborn to listen.”
I giggle a bit, enjoying the embarrassment on his face. “Good,” I tease, giggling more at the face Steve makes. “Sounds like I owe him one.”
“Oh, don’t tell him that, it’ll go straight to his head.” He grins, kissing my fingers again before rising. “Let me see how long they need you here, then we can get you more comfortable at home.”
...
I hum to myself as I flip the page in the file, lounging back on the couch with one of Steve’s warm blankets across my lap. “It looks good Scott, you sure you don’t mind the extra work while I’m out?”
Scott shrugs, trying and failing to not look like he’s staring at our small apartment. “I don’t mind, gives me something to do while Cassie’s gone.” He nods at me. “You feel any better?”
I shrug a bit, setting the file down. “Sometimes. I’m tired of being on bedrest, but it’s healing so I can’t complain.”
“She still tries though,” Steve chimes in, winking at me as he passes me another water. “I appreciate you bringing it here.”
“Of course, anything for the Captain.” He nods, excusing himself to leave and accidentally shutting the door hard. “Sorry!”
“I like him,” I grin, watching Steve settle into the cushion beside me.
“He’s good,” Steve hums, rubbing my leg. “A bit excited, but a good head. And more than happy to keep you busy while you’re off.”
I make a face. “I’m trying...”
“Hey,” He gently squeezes my hand. “I know you are. I know what it’s like to be pushed to the sidelines, I get it. That’s why I thought having you more on this side was easier.”
“I thought it was because you hated writing reports,” I tease, laughing when he rolls his eyes. “I know what you mean, Steve. I appreciate it, especially with everything going on.”
He nods, gently stroking my knuckles with his thumb. “Is Zoe still coming over?”
I nod, perking up. “Yeah, her and her new boyfriend. I heard a lot about her being moved, but I’m ready to meet this new guy she’s been excited about. It’s good seeing her happy.”
Steve grins. “Good, I’ll make sure dinner’s all ready, get some beers in the fridge, whatever you guys want. Except you,” He eyes me playfully. “No alcohol with your medicine.”
“Oh whatever,” I wave it off, getting more comfortable. “If that’s the worst thing I have to deal with I’m fine.”
He opens his mouth to retort when there’s a sharp knock on the door, pulling his attention. “That must be Zoe.” He hums, easily tugging the door open and freezing at the sight of Zoe and a familiar man waiting, the taller man looking a bit nervous. “Buck?” Steve stares, glancing between the two. “Are you-”
“Yeah,” He grins sheepishly, holding Zoe a bit closer to his side as she relaxes against him. “We kind of- met when I was on the run.”
I blink, staring at Zoe. “I get a story someday, right?”
“Of course,” She smiles, moving over to hug me. “You’ll be the first.”
Bucky smirks at Steve’s bewildered expression. “Wake up, punk. It’s not the 40s anymore.” Steve snaps out of it enough to shove him, making Bucky laugh. “It was a fluke, Steve. We just happened to connect.”
“I think it’s great.” I smile at Zoe, not missing how genuinely happy she is. “The more the merrier, right?”
Steve chuckles, shaking his head. “Honestly... If it were anyone else, I’d be worried. Not you two though,” He accepts Zoe’s side hug, grinning at Bucky. “Besides, it makes it easier to have you guys as our best man and maid of honor.”
“Wait- Are you?”’ Zoe looks between us, smiling when she sees my nod. “Of course! Whatever you guys need, we’re there. Right?” She glances at Bucky, seeming a bit embarrassed.
Bucky’s all smiles, looking at her like she holds up the sky. “Right, doll. Any time.”

ailesswhumptober day 20: enemy/stranger to caretaker / accidental de-aging / "i'm absolutely not qualified for this shit"
chapter 6 / 7 of you fall and you crawl and you break | not rated, chose not to warn
of all the places to hide in the forest, the edge of a river littered with pebbles would not have been rick's first choice. the tall thicket of trees provides decent aerial coverage, and hulk's green enough to blend in, even if rick's not. he's a puny human, barely on anyone's radars unless he's screwed something up in a particularly bad way, which, to the best of his knowledge, wasn't what happened back at the strip mall. but this is where the hulk's stopped, and rick's not gonna fight him on this, not when they're miles away from the disaster anyway.
"hulk hurts," he says, falling to the ground. "you… friend? friend help hulk?"
rick stares in disbelief. in all his years of knowing the hulk, of knowing bruce and doctor banner as well, there's always been a common denominator: their ability to effectively communicate, even if no one else bothered to listen or could understand them. the hulk sitting cross-legged in front of rick, looking at him with wide green eyes, couldn't be further from his usual appearance.
"uhh…" he finds himself almost at a loss for words. "yeah, hulk. i'm your friend. we're friends."
the hulk claps, big, clumsy motions that sends ripples across the river and pine needles swirling around them. "happy. thank you."
"no need to thank me just yet, big guy. i haven't done anything yet; i don't even know what's hurting you. and you might wanna ease up on the clapping, okay?"
hulk frowns, and it shouldn't be possible, but he fucking looks like he's pouting and giving rick puppy dog eyes. "okay. hulk stop." he holds out his hands, pointing to his knees. "hurts."
hulk's knees are undoubtedly scraped, but that's par for the course after helping survivors leave a burning building, getting shot at by the oh-so-helpful local sheriffs as a result, then running and leaping across state lines. his reactions, however, are far from what rick's used to. the guy's got a healing factor, for god's sake, but rick doesn't need banner's intellect to know that pointing it out is pointless.
"yeah, you got knocked about quite a bit back there. but you're all better now!" he rushes to say as hulk's lower lip trembles. "you're big and strong, hulk, and you're going to be just fine."
hulk shakes his head, then takes a good, long look at himself. "big?"
"how's that even a question," rick mumbles, pacing in circles for a few frantic moments before the light-bulb goes off in his brain. "hulk?" he asks, turning to face him. "can you show me how big you are?" rick holds up his own hand, watching with dread as hulk mirrors him, then lowers his thumb and his pinky.
three. old enough, at least, to know that he's three, which isn't much of a relief. rick resumes his pacing and starts replaying the past few hours in his mind, looking for anything which might have caused the hulk to think he's a child, but there's nothing out of the ordinary. nothing unusual, not for them, about trying to do research and reconnaissance, bruce becoming hulk out of necessity, then being chased out of town while everyone yelled about how monstrous and unwanted he was…
"oh, i'm absolutely not qualified for this shit," rick mutters. this is something for a doctor, like samson - but not samson, because the last time he claimed he was helping, bruce wasn't even bruce for months at a time. "i can barely take care of myself. how am i supposed to deal with this?"
he turns around to find hulk sitting exactly as he was before rick freaked out for ten minutes, according to his watch. okay, so at least he doesn't have to worry about the guy running off, but there's still a million other issues. how long is he gonna stay big and green? is it better or worse if banner returns with the mind of a toddler? what if banner's body reverts as well? how are they meant to shelter in place or make a plan to seek safety? rick had been following banner's lead, and hulk usually has the subconscious knowledge of where they're meant to be, but hulk's usually not three years old. he's also not usually humming and staring at the sky.
"that's a nice song," rick says, trying to gauge hulk's conversational skills.
hulk hums in agreement. "star," he replies. "where star?"
rick patiently explains that it's still the afternoon and that the stars won't be out until nightfall. he neglects to mention that he hopes hulk will be back to normal by then, not wanting to put a damper on hulk's joy about seeing the stars, but it turns out mentioning the moon has the same effect.
"hulk no like moon," he declares. "moon hurt hulk."
"the moon… did what to you?"
"hit hulk." he swings an arm out to demonstrate.
rick sighs. unless hulk is referring to a time he went into space and didn't tell rick, cloak or moon knight are the likely culprits, which means the star hulk is hoping to see is another vigilante and not a literal star.
"that wasn't very nice," rick says instead of voicing his frustration at waiting for an impossibility.
hulk nods in agreement. "moon not nice." he stares at rick, then proclaims, "friend nice."
"you're not so bad, yourself."
"bad?" hulk's voice booms, finally closer to the deep tone rick is used to, but it's not as relieving as he expected.
"crap. no, hulk, you're not bad. you're good and nice and…" rick trails off, unsure of what other words could possibly describe hulk without setting him off.
"hulk friend?"
"yes, hulk is a friend." christ, this is exhausting. "how about we play the quiet game for a while, okay? we both stay very, very quiet, for as long as we can." rick raises his index finger to his lips, shushing himself, and melts a little bit as hulk mirrors him.
the game buys him some time to quiet his mind and think. all they've got is the clothes on their backs - or in hulk's case, the pants on his ass - and rick's watch, which is so old-school all it can do is tell them the time. they've got no compass, no means of communication, nothing to test or clean the river water to keep them hydrated.
"rick?" bruce's question pulls him away from his thoughts. "we okay?"
turns out, the quiet game was beneficial to the system as well, letting them gradually switch. bruce's voice is weak; it usually is, after such a long period 'inside,' but it doesn't answer rick's questions.
"hey, big guy. we're okay. a bit lost in wherever the hell we are, but each in one piece."
"i'd call that a win." bruce grins. "cheer up, rick. we'll be outta here in no time."
rick nods but doesn't say anything as bruce leads the way, humming twinkle, twinkle little star under his breath.

Hello Solider
Pairings: Bucky x oc
warnings: the red room
word count 1.4k (The chapters will get longer i swear)
(uhhh idk how this posted since it wasn’t supposed to post until wednesday but uh here’s the third chapter i guess 😭)
~
Lilith's p.o.v *present time Lilith is 34*
Where am i? What day is it? Why am i so cold? How did i get here? How long have i been asleep? Where is the solider?
My minds running wild as i open my eyes. I don’t recognize the room or clothes i’m in. I try to move my hands and feet but quickly learn that they are bound to the bed.
“HELLO?!” My voice cracks as i yell hoping that someone can hear me.
"She’s awake. Go wipe and prep her then we will give her the mission." I hear the mumbled words of some guards at the door. My fear grows stronger when i hear I’m gonna be wiped again. I keep trying to pull at my restraints but it proves to be no use again.
The door suddenly bursts open and two guards i’ve never seen before walk in. I’m suddenly wheeled out of the room on the bed as i scream and trash. One of the guards puts a muzzle on me as we enter a room i don’t know.
“She needs to be wiped and prepped.” One shorter guard says to the doctor and the doctor nods. I’m put in the middle of the room and the muzzle gets taken off, and it gets replaced by a bite guard i know all too well. They tighten the straps on the table before injecting me with a sedative.
My eyes grow heavy but i don’t fall asleep as i see the machine come down on my head. The screams that come out of my throat as it attaches to my head is nothing short of blood curdling. I get zapped about fifteen times before i’m drooling and cant speak.
Dreykov walks in after i get wiped so he can give me my mission. I slowly open my eyes as i hear him walk in. He grabs a chair and sits in front of me before grabbing my face and smacking me conscious.
“Доброе утро бабочка. Мы вытащили тебя на очень важную миссию. Крайне важно, чтобы вы выполнили эту миссию безупречно. понял?” (Good morning butterfly. We pulled you out for a very important mission. It is imperative you complete this mission flawlessly. understood?) He asks as one of the agents hands him a manila folder.
“понял” (understood) I reply back blankly not being able to think right now. He hands me the folder and i try to focus my eyes so i can read it. When i open the folder and see the name "Avengers" on the front page and read what the mission details are. The mission details state that my objective is to get rid of all the avengers. Along with the objective is a list of names. I take my time reading it over knowing that the quicker i read the quicker i leave.
TARGETS
1.) Tony Stark (AKA Iron Man)
2.) Steve Rogers ( AKA Captain America)
3.) Natasha Romanoff (No Alias)
4.) Clinton Barton (AKA Hawkeye)
5.) Bruce Banner (AKA Hulk)
6.) James Barnes (No Alias)
7.) Samuel Wilson (AKA Falcon)
8.) Wanda Maximoff (AKA The Scarlet Witch)
9.) Pietro Maximoff (AKA Quicksliver)
10.) James Rhodes (AKA War Machine)
As i read over my targets my eyebrows furrow at the two names without aliases that’s a little weird for a whole group of superhero’s. I just move past it and continue reading my objective which seems to be to take out all the Avengers.
I’m apparently supposed to pose as a party guest for Tony Starks party and take out the members one by one as i get them alone. The mission seems pretty simple. Nothing i haven’t done before so it shouldn’t be a problem.. or so i thought.
“должно быть легко” (should be easy) I say as i finish up reading the mission report.
Dreykov and hands the book to a guard telling him to program me right before we leave for the party. The guard nods his head and Dreykov turns his attention back to me.
”Хорошо, теперь иди готовься, и ты уйдешь, как только закончишь бабочку” (Good now go get ready and you will be leaving as soon as you’re done butterfly) Dreykovs replies handing me two duffel bags and clothes for now.
I walk out of the room with the duffel bags and clothes in my hands and make my way back to my room until we leave. I only have enough time to get dressed before i’m told we need to leave by two guards outside my room.
When i open the door i see the short guard from before along with one i never seen before. I just walk past them and make my way onto the jet without speaking. As i sit down i let out a deep breath and try to focus on my mission.
I try to relax a little on the jet ride but for some reason i get two of my targets names out of my head. Natasha Romanoff and James Barnes... those two feel oddly familiar to me and i can't figure out why. I try to push off the feelings of familiarity out of my head but its hard for some reason.
Hours go by and we finally land at some dusty ass motel and i walk into a room that i was lead to by the two guards who i still don't know. When i walk into the room i'm hit with the stench of death and mold and i cringe as i'm hit with the smells. I go and sit on the edge of the bed and lay back on the dusty bed trying to calm myself before tomorrow night. I decide to close my eyes for a little as i lay back in the bed but thats ruined as soon as the door swings open.
"we have to put her to sleep for the night then we will wake her up two hours before the party." guard says to the other one he walked in with. I can barely open my eyes before i'm stuck with a needle in my neck and everything goes dark.
-------------- The next day 2 hours before the party --------
"wake up soldat it's time to get ready for your mission." I hear some man say to me as i start to wake up. It takes me a second to wake up fully and once i do i remember where i am and what my objective is for the night. I look at the man in front of me and i nod my head which is a sign i'm ready for those damned 10 words and ready for my mission. I nod and then he hands me the duffel bags and tells me to go get ready and that they will program me when im done.
After he hands me the clothes i walk into the dimly lit bathroom and start getting ready for tonight. As i'm getting ready i start to get a feeling that something about this mission isn't right i feel like something is going to go wrong. I try to shake off the feeling as i continue to get ready. I slip on the black dress after i do my makeup and hair and admire myself in the mirror real quick. Ive never worn anything other then the dusty clothes that the red room provides so its nice to be wearing something else for once even if its just for a little.
I walk out of the bathroom to be met with the same two random guards as before. They don't say anything to me they just gesture for me to leave the motel room. I grab my shoes and put them on before i walk out of the room. I walk onto the jet and out my shoes on as i wait for the words.
I see both of the men walk onto the jet and the shorter one is holding what i call ‘the book of the damned’. They both walk over to me and strap my hands and legs down beside me incase i get violent.
The shorter one kneels before me and grabs my face in his rough hand. He smiles devilishly as he gets ready to make me hate myself for the next 24 hours.
“черный,луна,лесдымоход,железнодорожный вокзал,музыка,сказка,ночь,вода,коридор,радио” (black, moon, forest, chimney, train station, music, fairytale, nightfall, water, corridor, radio) He speaks slowly and i can smell the tobacco and vodka on his breath. Once he says the last words i can feel myself get shut out and the winter widow take over. I close my eyes and when i open them again i can feel the difference in my body, I can feel her take over my body and leave me helpless.
“Soldat?” He asks backing up waiting for my response as the other guard stands next to him.
“готов соблюдать” (ready to comply) I reply with a gravelly voice and a dead look in my eyes.
”привет солдат” (Hello solider) He says smiling at me.
i do not give permission for my work to be copied or translated on other cites

Into the Anthill pt 7 - Among Us Walks A Goliath
Taking a year off to focus on his research left Hank at a big disadvantage when he was finally forced to suit up again. Still unable to become Ant-Man and barely able to perform as Giant-Man, the strain of his first outing as Goliath caused him to be stuck at a height of 10 feet. During this time he had increasingly common swings of depression and rage that not even Janet could shake him out of, possibly our first real glimpse of Hank’s bipolar disorder. His mood stabilized some once Dr. Bill Foster helped him regain his full size-changing abilities, but his newfound temper left him quicker to snap and eager to brawl.
But hey, at least all that size changing finally mutated his superpowers into him.
🐜🐜🐜
Avengers vol 1 #28-33
Jan was captured by The Collector after escaping Attuma in Avengers #26, so Hank called the Avengers to ask for help, revealing his secret identity to them in the process. After not suiting up for so long Hank could only go between 25 feet and his standard size. Wanda gifted him a new uniform (that she made for him in her spare time for some reason) and they savd Jan, but due to overexertion Hank got stuck at 10ft tall and could not shrink further. Cap had some doctor he knew back in WW2 examine Hank. The doctor suggested that Hank would die instantly if he ever tried to return to normal size again, which threw him into a rage before he settled into just being miserable instead.
Desperate for a solution, Hank traveled to South America on his own to find a scientist that he hoped could help him return to normal. One high-tech mystical secret society later he had rescued the kidnapped scientist, who quickly explained that the only bio-chemist on Earth brilliant enough to save Goliath was Hank Pym. Go figure.
Hank kicked Jan out of his lab, insisting that he needed another bio-chemist as his assistant. At Tony’s recommendation he hired Bill Foster and the two of them got along swimmingly. The Sons of the Serpent then attacked Bill and abducted Cap, so the Avengers took them down with Black Widow’s help.
Tales of Suspense vol 1 #84
Cap brought AIM’s Super Adaptoid to Avengers HQ to have Hank study it, but as someone who had never built any robot more complicated than a remote-controlled ant (yet) he wasn’t able to determine much. The Adaptoid took this opportunity to copy all of their powers and attacked Cap once he was alone.
Amazing Spider-Man Annual #3
The Avengers (even Thor and Iron-Man) unanimously voted to offer Spider-Man membership if he could bring the Hulk to them (as a sort of field test). Spidey intentionally failed the test once he learned about Bruce Banner’s struggle, allowing Hulk to escape safely yet again.
Avengers vol 1 #34-40
The Living Laser became obsessed with Jan after seeing her at a bank. Laser successfully tricked Hawkeye and Cap into a laser cage so he could suck her into a jar and escape. He then attempted to overthrow a Central American government and trapped Cap and Hawkeye again. Hank’s work with Bill Foster finally paid off here, as he was able to shrink down to his former Ant-Man size again to break into Laser’s machine and cause it to explode.
Quicksilver was captured by Ixar and the Ultroids, so the rest of the team - along with Black Widow - traveled to Transia to free him. Ixar was able to get the full team trapped in capsules and planned to steal their powers. Hank shrank through a tube to set the team free.
After the Ixar incident the Avengers held a meeting to decide if Black Widow should be allowed to join, but Nick Fury got to her first and sent her on a deep cover mission to China. Just after the team noticed that Cap had gone MIA they were attacked by Hercules, who Enchantress had just hypnotized. He eventually snapped out of it, but Zeus ordered him to stay on Earth for one year as punishment for entering the mortal realm without permission. Hank invited him to stay at Avengers HQ, offering him Thor’s old room. Hercules would then save the Avengers from the Mad Thinker, Hammerhead, Piledriver, Thunder Boot, and a cosmic-cube-empowered Namor over the next two issues despite not officially joining the team yet.
Minor/Cameo appearances from this period:

Still Friends | Chapter 17: Specially Gifted
Summary: After a chance encounter at a party, Wanda and Bucky find they have more in common than they realized.
This fic is heavily inspired by 'Friends' by my lovely friend Poppy. She is aware of this fic and I've been given permission for this marvel-version retelling! If you haven't read her dramione fic 'Friends', I HIGHLY suggest it. I fell in love with the story and couldn't help but wonder, what if it was Wanda and Bucky instead of Hermione and Draco? Thus "Still Friends" was born. Enjoy!
Pairing: Bucky X Wanda
Word Count: 33,068
Warning: smut, drug use, depression

April 21st, 2028
He’s already buzzed when he walks into the gym, nearly tripping over his undone laces. Sif is nowhere to be seen, and he huffs.
Good. He didn’t feel like sharing his bottle today.
He drops his bag, turns on the treadmill. His brain tingles with a faint excitement. There’s nothing that makes him this exuberant, this numb. As he begins a light jog, he takes a gulp, the liquor no longer burning as harshly as it did, but the taste is oh so sweet.
The only sound echoing around the gym is the machine, his burps, and the light buzz of a wall tv hooked up in the corner.
Its isolated perfection.
When Sif arrives, he’s nearly passed out on the barbell rack. She laughs, kicks his thigh with the tip of her shoe, takes a drag from his bottle.
“Don’t fuckin’ - fuckin’ gimme,” He slurs, attempting to grab it. She holds it out of reach, takes another swig. “You goddamn bitch.”
“Watch how you speak to your supplier,” she warns, but her eyes are glossy and he knows she doesn’t actually care. “You wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for me.”
Bucky groans, sits up. His head is pounding, heart lightly stuttering in his chest as he leans against the rack. “You better get your act together, wouldn’t want the security guards seeing you like this.”
“I’m here because of her, not you.” Bucky spits, and Sif frowns. She waves his words off, looking away as she undos her bag. “Don't act like you’re-you’re better than me or somethin.”
Sif clicks her tongue. “Yeah yeah.”
Bucky eyes her as he raises the neck to his lips, dragging his tongue over the opening. Careful, has to ensure non of this liquid gold goes to waste.
They workout in silence, and when Bruce Banner walks on the screen, a recording from last night’s press conference, Bucky doesn’t have any choice but to listen.
“We know SHIELD and SWORD are liable for every damage they’ve caused,” the doctor says, his glasses perched on his nose. “But they’re also responsible for multitudes of goods. Take for instance, our android here.”
Bucky whips his head around to the tv, his full attention suddenly settled on the corner of the room.
Vision is dressed in a fucking vest, his skin now returned to its red and green state. He looks nervous, unsure, but very much alive. He stands next to Bruce, hands clasped in front of him, and when Bruce gestures to the podium, he taps the mike lightly before he speaks.
“Thank you all, for your attendance. It's my understanding that I have caused…a bit of a problem for the population.” He begins, his voice steady and flowing easily. “I hope to right those wrongs. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for my darling wife, who never gave up on me.” He gestures to somewhere off camera, and Bucky feels his throat tighten.
Wanda walks onto the stage, stopping right beside him, a gleaming smile stretched on her face. She’s gorgeous, her hair curled and cheeks pink. Reaching out, she slips her hand into Vision's. He smiles at her, presses his mouth to her temple, then turns his attention back to the crowd.
“It was Wanda's idea, but we hope to begin giving back to a world that has granted us this one gift; each other. In accordance with SWORD and Xavier Institute for Higher Learning, we will be opening an orphanage for the specially gifted.”
Wanda is practically radiating with joy, and Bucky has to tear his eyes away before it maims him. He lifts the bottle to his mouth, takes deep long drags before coughing harshly. Sif laughs, and Bucky thinks he can feel something break inside. Dropping the bottle, he grabs her arm, dragging her to him, his mouth on hers in a harsh kiss.
There’s nothing sweet or good about his movements. They’re a mess of ripped clothing and spit, his teeth sinking into her skin hard enough to draw blood. Sif treats him the same, knows what he wants and is more than willing to give it; she wants the same.
His hips are erratic, his head dizzy as he moves. Sif is gripping his hair tightly, pulling, and he latches to her neck. The tv sound is low, but he picks up words and phrases in-between his grunts and slaps of skin.
So happy,
grateful,
school for the gifted,
our family.
Bucky sobs into Sifs neck, his tears mixing with their sweat, and she hums softly.
“Just pretend,” she mummers, bites his lip and drags it painfully. “That's what I do.”
Dread sets in now, his gut twisting around his muscles and tendons, and he wishes it would stop his heart.
He finishes inside her, pulling out the second he does and drags his clothes back on. Sif stares at him sadly as he moves, leaning against the wall and catching her breath.
“You’re going to have to let her go one day.” Sif murmurs, lifts a bottle to her mouth. “It might kill you if you don’t.”
“Don’t,” he warns, grabbing his bag. He’s still drunk, and his mind isn’t right at all. “Don’t tell me how to get over you. You fucking lost that privilege.”
Sif stays silent, doesn't bother informing him that she isn’t the her he’s referring to. They’re both well aware they’re using one another, they both enjoy the game. Sif wonders if his heart would ever move on. If it would ever stop breaking.
He wished it would.

Review: The Incredible Hulk Epic Collection 13: Crossroads
This might be the best Epic Collection that I've read to date
Crossroads begins with a 4-part storyline where the Doctor Strange villain, Nightmare, gets into the Hulk's head as a means of getting to his Defenders teammate, Strange. This causes the Hulk to revert to his most savage, which culminates in the spectacular Hulk #300, where he terrorizes New York and no one--not SHIELD, the Fantastic Four, the Heroes for Hire, or even the Avengers--is able to stop him. Although Doctor Strange knows that Hulk is under Nightmare's influence, he is forced to make a hard decision: he cannot cure the Hulk but he cannot allow him to continue his rampage and so he banishes him to the Crossroads, hoping that his friend can find peace there.
The rest of the collection takes place in the titular Crossroads, a dimensional hub with hundreds, perhaps thousands, of portals to other worlds, which Hulk visits in 1- to 2- issue story arcs.
Under a lesser creative team, this would grow repetitive very quickly, but Bill Mantlo and Sal Buscema instead masterfully make use of the dimensions to tell different types of stories--there's an Arthurian-esque romance story as well as a Moby Dick -influenced story involving the energy-consuming Klatu monster--and, more importantly, to grow and develop the Hulk.
A clever plot device that Mantlo uses is that when Doctor Strange cast the spell, he installed a kind of magical fail-safe: when Hulk knows that he can't find happiness or a purpose in a dimension, he is automatically sent back to the Crossroads. In several dimensions he makes a friend or sees the possibility of temporary happiness, only to lose this, often through no fault of his own, and the Hulk quickly becomes a tragic figure. It's a surprisingly emotional turn for a title that I always tended to think of as being more straightforward action. It is also an effective narrative device, because it allows the Hulk to have real character development and return to a mental state closer to where he had been prior to this volume.
Although I enjoyed And Now...The Wolverine (Hulk Epic Collection 7), one of my complaints was that I would have liked to see more of Bruce Banner, because he usually serves as the emotional center of the story. It's a testament to how well Mantlo writes the Hulk that I feel like Banner (who only appears in a few instances) isn't needed.
I'd be remiss if I didn't specifically mention the art. This is the last volume of Sal Buscema's 10-year run on the title, and he goes out with a bang; the work he does on these issues, especially #300, is the best of his legendary career. Part of why the Hulk's regression works is because Buscema draws him as brutal and unhinged. The last few issues are drawn by a young Mike Mignola. While he seems to be finding himself artistically (or perhaps he was instructioned by his editor to draw like Buscema), you can definitely see traces of the future legend who would go on to create Hellboy and B.P.R.D.
Until recently, I didn't consider myself a Hulk fan. Both the character and the stories often felt a bit one-dimensional. While I enjoyed some Hulk comics for what they were, they didn't necessarily make me want to read more Hulk comics. So it was a massive surprise to me how much I loved this collection. If this wasn't the best Epic Collection that I've read thus far, it's certainly near the top, and, more importantly, it's converted me into a true Hulk fan.

ailesswhumptober day 15: waterboarding / removing body parts / "don't break down on me yet"
chapter 1 / 7 of you fall and you crawl and you break | not rated, chose not to warn
"gamma radiation," the leader lectures, circling around bruce's restrained body, "unlike conventional electromagnetic radiation, contains a unique negative ion within its wavelength."
the muzzle over bruce's mouth prevents him from disagreeing; the pliers hold his eyelids open, and it hurts like hell to roll his eyes, but it's the only sort of protest bruce can make.
"now, now, doctor banner." the leader presses a button on the panel beside the autopsy table, summoning an android holding a variety of tools. "it's quite rude to interrupt your superior." he doesn't bother wearing the proffered gloves or swabbing bruce's arms before making neat incisions with a carving knife across his triceps. "as i was saying, the gamma contains a special ion, and you, my dear doctor, are simply bursting with it."
bruce watches his skin open and quickly mend itself again. it's not gamma or magic, not as far as he knows, although glowing green doors and a hollow voice in his mind like to argue otherwise. it's much more than that, something rotten in the DNA he inherited from his father, enhanced with all sorts of crap that he picked up from decades of inter-dimensional travel and contact with countless species.
"at first i thought to use your blood." the leader casually waves his knife in the air. "but upon further examination, it just wouldn't do. i mean, look at your cousin. poor jen, with her grotesque green skin and the physique of a common bodybuilder."
if bruce could talk, he'd point out how sterns looks infinitely worse than jen ever could, even on her worst days. he'd prey on the man's insecurities, his selfish desires, his inability to comprehend the basic science at his fingertips while chasing things so far out of reach that he might as well try this bullshit on stretcho and see the sort of shitstorm reed could throw his way.
"your flesh, on the other hand…" he has the audacity to wink as he revs a chainsaw and brings it down on bruce's right wrist.
bruce grits his teeth, borrowing some of hulk's strength to dislocate his jaw and focus on that pain instead. he ignores the little guy's ear-piercing, heart-breaking wail, leaves it for joe or the green scar or anyone else to take care of, and ignores the part of himself that says avoiding the child makes him as bad as brian.
"you really are incredible, did you know that?" he leans over as he asks. "seriously, you are. it's a real pity that you could never quite reign in your brain or your brawn, unlike moi." the leader's cranium flexes, like it's trying to prove the point. "but not to worry. i'm going to find whatever piece of you is holding on to that great gamma energy and rip it clean out of you. well, rip it out, in any case."
cold metal traces the inside of bruce's thighs, sending shivers through his body. it's not too different from the metal beneath his bare back, yet it's just different enough that the devil rattles his cage and snarls to be let out.
not yet. this guy's not worth the trouble. i can handle this.
there's nothing for a moment, then a white-hot searing pain as his nerves are severed.
"you know, in all my years of studying you, there's one thing i couldn't bring myself to think about."
that's certainly news to bruce. sterns spent most of his career following him around like a lost puppy, yapping at leonard's heels for a scrap of his attention and glimpse at his files.
"but seeing as you're right here, right now, it would be a shame to push the thought aside any longer."
bruce hears it before he feels it. the rumble of the chainsaw's engine, the vibration of its teeth. he smells it before he feels it, the tangy iron of his blood spilling out between his legs. bruce is no stranger to missing limbs and damaged organs, but this is the first time his ballsack has been punctured and his dick cut off.
the shock overwhelms the pain for a brief second, and then bruce writhes and screams silently beneath the muzzle as the sheer pain overwhelms him. sweat runs down his forehead, burning his eyes.
"hmmm. bit of a letdown; i was hoping it would change color. let's just put this in a jar for safekeeping and get back to it later."
bruce doesn't have any time to process that before an honest-to-god wooden stake stabs his heart, followed by a scalpel a few inches below. he can't look down any further than his nose, can't look at much of anything other than the leader's overgrown head, but bruce doesn't need to see what happens next. he's been here before and he'll be here again, it's just a matter of who it is on the other side of the operation.
"your heart," the leader proclaims, dragging the scalpel down, down down. "you know what they say about a man's heart."
bruce has no idea who they are or what they say. he might've known about it at one point in a previous half-life, but at the moment the only thing he knows is that his heart is literally in another man's hands, and that man is going to sever the aorta with glee. it's nothing original - thunderbolt's own science division performed the same operation at least twice before - and bruce has died in much more agonizing ways, but…
"shit. joe? are you there, man?"
"who the hell is joe?"
"uhh… no one. nothing, betty, never mind. long day, that's all. bruce! c'mon, man, wake up!"
the sharp scent of furniture polish hits with more force than rick's words. he groans as he opens his eyes; the popcorn ceiling is unfamiliar, but that doesn't prove anything. joe's rarely in any place long enough for things to become familiar.
"wha's goin' on?" he asks. his tongue is dry, his throat is sore, but at least they're intact and in working order.
"i was hoping you'd tell me." betty moves to sit on the couch beside him. "you called rick and asked to be picked up from the middle of nowhere."
"there was no way i would've made it in time." rick kicks the ground, looking at his sneakers rather than his friends. "i convinced len to use an alpha flight teleporter to get you, and he kept you up there for a few hours before crashing into my room."
joe closes his eyes. the kid's instincts had been right, as they usually were. whatever samson did to patch him up must've worked, 'cause joe feels right as rain, minus the throbbing aches and pains across his body which are slightly more intense than usual.
"thanks," he mumbles. "you did good, kid."
"it was nothing. you would've done the same for me."
"take the compliment, jones. a kind word from bruce is rare."
betty is right. she usually is, which is joe's favorite thing about her. "sleep," he says, instead of continuing the conversation.
"sleep," betty agrees, covering joe with a blanket. "you can tell us all about your wild adventure later."
joe has no intention of ever telling them about what sterns did. samson knows better than to run his mouth, and bruce is much to ashamed to even think about the torture. "later," he agrees. "eventually."
never.
