Was playin’ on my Clangen save and suddenly had EMOTIONS about two of the family members of the previously mentioned Quietfin…

“W-why doesn’t she love me?”

Raincrawl felt his heart shatter as he approached Hushpaw, who he had noticed slipping out of camp and set after to follow him. He had assumed it was the young cat taking advantage of his newfound freedom after his injuries had healed, and had fully been prepared to tease the younger tom while guiding him back… He hadn’t been expecting to find his self-assured, rough-pawed nephew hunched over, sobbing quietly to the night, and then to his uncle once he had noticed his presence.

“... I’m… Assuming this is about Quietfin?” He asked softly, moving closer on unsteady paws. The burns he had suffered a few moons prior were still painful, parting his pale fur with angry marks that ached whenever someone so much as breathed on them. It upset Asterbounce endlessly, and she was usually lurking around the medic’s den as of late, learning how to make paste to soothe her mate’s pain.

Hushpaw let out a bitter laugh. “Who else?” He hissed, bitterness coiling across his tongue, though it was interrupted by another sob that wracked his body. Raincrawl pressed against his side, feeling his throat tighten as the dark-furred apprentice immediately curled into his side. “I-I just-! I don’t understand… I try so hard to be good, and brave, and strong, so she’ll look at me, b-but-!”

Raincrawl sighed softly, lowering himself - and Hushpaw in tandem - down into a crouch, carefully shifting his weight to accept more of his nephew’s. “I know,” he murmured, lapping between Hushpaw’s ears gently. “She’s… Grieving.”

“Silentpaw and I are nearly grown,” Hushpaw shot back, his face still buried in his uncle’s fur. “S-she should be over it! She didn’t even know them-!”

“I think,” Raincrawl interrupted carefully. “I think that’s why… Because she never got the chance to know them. Watch them grow… Even give them a name, like she did with you.” Hushpaw stilled, and Raincrawl took it as permission to continue on. “I’m not saying that her behavior is okay. She should have been a mother to you both, a proper mother, but… She wasn’t. There’s no changing that now. She didn’t get to know all of her kits, and so, I assume… She didn’t want to know any of them.”

Sighing deeply, Raincrawl lifted his head, catching the faint glimmer of the stars far above as they peeked through the shelter of the branches. “Quietfin’s always been that way. It was always all or nothing with her, with everything. She was already a warrior when I was born, but I grew up watching her give all of herself to everything she possibly could… I think she tried to do the same as a mother, but… Grief is a wicked thing. It dampened her spark. She was never the same after she delivered you into the world.”

Hushpaw was silent. Raincrawl grimaced, replaying his words, wondering if he had said something wrong or too insensitive. He lowered his head again, resting his muzzle on top of his nephew’s head. “I’m… Sorry, Hushpaw,” he murmured. “In the end, I’m not Quietfin. I don’t know what she thinks, or why she does the things she does… It’s unfair to you, what she’s going through, but it’s… Unfair to her as well.” Raincrawl sighed, defeated, and said again, “I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to be,” Hushpaw mumbled, his voice half-muffled by Raincrawl’s fur, before he withdrew his head to look at the earth beneath their paws. “It’s… Not your fault. I’m okay with not knowing why she does things, sometimes, but sometimes it’s… Just a lot.” He sniffled, flicking his ear, before tentatively lifting his gaze. “And… For the record… I’m glad you’re not her. You’re better. You’re… More of a parent than she ever was, a-and I’m grateful to have you, really. I don’t say that enough…”

Raincrawl felt his heart soften. Perhaps this conversation hadn’t been the best… There had been no ground gained or lost, after all. But… It seemed to have worked, in cheering Hushpaw up, at least a little bit. And to hear something so genuine from the usually closed-off little tom made Raincrawl feel a little lighter, himself. “You don’t have to say it, Hushpaw,” he soothed. “I know. I’m grateful to have you, too.” Heaving a great sigh, Raincrawl forced himself upright, gritting his teeth at the pain that accompanied the action, but allowing the tension in his lungs to escape him in a laugh as Hushpaw fell over with an awkward squawk, not expecting the warrior to get up so suddenly and without warning.

“C’mon now… Better get back inside camp before Ivystar notices you’re gone,” he purred, remembering his own apprentice days beneath their leader as he nudged Hushpaw to his paws, snorting again at the disheveled state of his fur and reaching down to lick between his ears once again.

“Yeah, yeah, m’ comin’,” Hushpaw grumbled, pressing himself against Raincrawl’s side and beginning to walk, offering his body as a crutch for his uncle to lean on, an offer that he accepted with quiet gratitude. Looking away, and beneath his breath, Hushpaw added softly, “... Thanks, for this…”

“Of course,” Raincrawl purred, butting his head against Hushpaw’s own. “Everyone has a rough day from time to time. I love you, Hush’.”

“... I love you too, uncle…”

TWST Theory—Beastmen.

Or me realizing I had reached 150+ followers and didn't make a post about it lmaoo

Gonna get real with some of yall—assigning animal traits to every Therianthrope (scientific name for Beastmen, God bless) under the sun and only grouping them in Savanaclaw. Is boring, played out, tired even.

Like I get the monsterfucker in yall craves it the same way Rook craves mounting Leona's head on a wall like that woman from Madagascar but please understand that type casting them into only Savanaclaw is wack bruh—Merfolk and Beastmen are probably found in every dorm, the game only shows us dorms that are made up of these species.

But I present to you something that's been sitting on my soul for a while, I've brainrotted other theories in broken-synchronicity 's ask box if you want to get any context on what I'm talking about but I'll still give a slight rundown on what it is.

Without further ado—let's get wild!

Therianthropes descended from Merfolk due to the constant shifting and dangers of the deep, if you've seen megamouth sharks, false killer whales (not the real ones,), or even played subnautica, you'll know exactly why.

Due to magic and DNA evolution, they were able to assimilate animal traits into their body, mystical creature were not safe, there are jackalope type Beastmen, Unicorn type Beastmen (contrary to popular belief, were very aggressive and violent, only those of pure heart could tame them—now they are relatively tame, but will still impale you on their horn for fun) and Griffin type Beastmen.

I say type due to the constant variations of the Griffin, Unicorn, and Jackalope, although for the jackalope the general consensus was that they were of the rabbit family.

There came a fued between Preda and Prey Beastmen bc Preda thought Prey were weak—and when I talk Prey B's I mean those that don't go after animals all too much, Hippos are considered Prey if you needed perspective.

Prey Beastmen assimilated more Preda DNA into their bodies as a way to properly integrate Preda and Prey Beastmen before their became a divide like the humans at the time.

When the Age of Gods came along, the term False Therianthrope [Beastmen] came to be—it means a person has the appearance/traits of a particular Beastmen subspecies but is not a true Beastmen due to either being formed by magical means (homunculous are considered false humans, fwe who can shapeshift into uncanny humans are False Humans, there were False Humans during prehistoric twst time, Mandela Girlies take that and run—Now.) So animal headed Gods, Were-whatever the fuck yall tack on, and more are considered False Beastmen.

Do False Beastmen and False Humans overlap? At points, yes, but there is a distinction that False Humans only take up the image of a human albeit skewed—Gods were condered divine despite taking up human forms bc they presented humans in a more angelic and divine light.

Art History Timeee—In Prehistoric societies, animals were actually the first to be put to the caves, usually as a way to depict what and how to kill the animal and survive or were used as story telling, you can see it in the reliefs of Lascaux.

The Age of Heros presented a boom in both literature and art, and such Beastmen found their own style of clothing, sculpture, stories, and art at the time—this meant that architectural styles similar to North, West, Central African, Dravidian, and even Mediterranean Revival type architecture.

I'd also like to mention that Dwarves influenced Human, Beastmen, and even Fae societies due to their status as the ultimate crafters—yes, they were very isolationist during the prehistoric period but they slowly moved out of their shell by the iron and gold age, where metals and ore were in abundance.

Age of Monsters was when Humans were at odds with everyone—anything nonhuman became a threat, even humans were a threat when Fals Humans were taken into account. Werewolves, Lycans (humanoid wolves compared to human turned wolf in werewolves, Resident Evil Village made that distinction), and anything that falls under the category of human/beast.

The death toll of Beastmen was unprecedented and a decree was quickly made to prevent something like that from happening again.

I would like to mention that as time went on Beastmen traits slowly became more human-like and this was because of how integrated humans and Beastmen were despite the Age of Monsters so that decree was passed without any pushback.

Yes, humans were still tamibg animals good night yall.

Anyways when the Age of Enlightenment came, experimentation was at an all time high—people were grave robbing like no other in an attempt to improve their understanding of the human body, so unethical experimentation was conducted on humans, Beastmen, Merfolk, any Faerie people could get their hands on, and more.

Regulations had to be put into place otherwise underground experimentation and other forms would come to light—surprisingly, when a Fae proposed a decree to stop experimentation, while there was some pushback the general public agreed and regulations were put in place.

When I say Decree, I don't mean it as in laws. I feel like there are tiers of laws and ethics that are put into place—Decrees are universal no matter where you're from, who you are, what species you are, you will still have some knowledge that a Decree is in place and will avoid it, doesn't mean you can't commit the crime but it does allow for Judges to know that you went against the decree willfully.

Anywaysss, while Therianthropes do have many traits with animals and even found themselves to act just like them when in their group its been found that Therianthropes exhibit more human behavior as opposed to their forefathers, the animal language that came easy to them in the past will need to be learned.

Cleanliness is a very important trait for Beastmen, their noses are sensitive, even back in the prehistoric times they found ways to create hygienic products which humans took heavy inspiration from.

Fashion also shifted around alot, when Bird Beastmen were in an abundance feathered headresses or hair ornaments or feathered cloaks were seen as a sign of wealth, status, and leadership, but as time went on to show that Bird Beastmen were dwindling, feathered hair ornaments became rare heirlooms passed down instead—a Bird Beastmen giving you their feather is a sign of great honor.

Bird Beastmen feathers are very ornate and vary even if some are considered in the same classification or type, back then, people would kill Bird B's to aquire their feathers but nowadays people use faux feathers or regular bird feathers.

Tattoos were also a sign of status, for warriors, originally only lionesses in their coming of age ceremonies would get tattoos (which was of their tribes signature mark) but as time and cultures mingled tattooing was commonly seen on many Beastmen.

Hair was also seen as a social status among some Beastmen so there was bound to be a discovery of braiding, locing, and the usage of clay in hot climates to prevent hair damage were actually introduced by humans this time around, beads and ornate hair accessories were introduced by Merfolk.

Scalding Sands actually has some history with using clay as a protectant against the heat as well as shaving their hair and using wigs which were seen as a sign or status before the economic boom.

Feel free to add more if yall want bc I'm kinda tired of seeing Beastmen get grouped into one little box where they are just animals in human skin like I get it, but some of yall have an intense problem with ignoring the fact that Beastmen probably influence cultures and art movements, laws and architecture, the same foes for Fae and Merfolk.

Get creative is all I'm saying.

As a person of color that's also genderfluid, I have a critique regarding this post [Bruh the sheer ease with which people who think of themselves as queer allies will say shit like, “analyzing this disney character through a trans lens is racist because it strips him of his racial heritage” is wild. Like, buddy, pal, friend of mine. You understand that trans people of colour are a thing right?].

The experiences of a white queer and a poc queer are very different bc the cultural context is very different. I'm not well educated on Colombian queer culture, but there is a difference between Colombian queer culture and white queer culture, which the people making these headcanons often ignore. That's the entire reason people are annoyed by them. Additionally, focusing on queer subtext detracts from the nuance and dynamics of this well-crafted POC story, simply because poc queer culture and yt queer culture are different. For example, headcanoning Isabela as a lesbian assumes that poc only marry for love, which in many cases is not true. The film did a great job at representing these poc dynamics, but yt fans are not. That's not to say Isabela cannot be a lesbian, but when headcanoning her, you shouldn't ignore the cultural context the movie gave.

Additionally, I'm not sure if you support the trans Luisa headcanon, but since you posted on the topic of trans Encanto characters, I feel like this comment is relevant to my critique. Historically, woc have been stripped of their femininity because they don't meet eurocentric beauty standards. Also, in my opinion, headcanoning a character as trans simply because they're buff or have a deep message is problematic. Obviously, Luisa being trans isn't inherently problematic, but the problem is that it stems from racist and transphobic perceptions.

Sorry if this ask is very long, I just wanted to get my thoughts related to your post out, and I've been seeing a lot of the arguments to latine people expressing their views just being presented as homophobia. Tl;dr, most of the critique towards queer depictions is just about the lack of poc incluson and the erasure of the movies values/point.

Listen, you're trying to make good points about cultural differences but the youtuber opened with "I'm not trans, but," and couldn't be arsed to ask any trans people around her for input.

And, frankly, if you think someone headcanoning Luisa as trans "robs her of femininity" while she continues to go around in embroidered skirts etc, that is a you problem. You're the one who thinks trans womanhood is unfeminine. You're the one denying women their femininity because you don't think they're doing it right.

What part of a random trans person on tumblr identifying with the way Luisa presents herself manages to "rob" anyone of the way she appears in the film?

No one is fucking stealing representation by pointing out that they relate to the experiences a character has.

What part of a blogger thinking "Isabela seems like she might be exclusively sexually attracted to other women" makes her initial willingness to marry a man for her family line disappear? Does that magically erase the movie's entire plot thread for her? Because I can cue up the film right now and all those scenes will sure as shit still be there.

Or do you think that talking about the possible lesbian implications of her story makes her difficult for you to relate to because you find lesbians alienating in some way?

It does not "undercut the values of the film" if Isabela's feelings of obligation are tied to being used as a breeding cow by her grandmother, being obligated by a crushing case of Eldest Daughter Syndrome to carry on the legacy of superhuman excellence, AND not wanting to marry a man. These are additive fucking traits, not subtractive ones.

Every time someone comes in to talk about how the nasty little queermos are distracting from the wholesome tale of POC family dynamics as if queer POC don't live simultaneously in both those spaces, I become this much more militant.

Did I think Luisa was trans when I watched the movie? No. Do I think so now? Fuck yes I do.

Everyone is trans now. Mirabel is every nonbinary ADHD stereotype you personally despise. Antonio will grow up to be a they/them lesbian even if they have to invent the concept themself. Isabela is the bisexual man-hater of your fucking nightmares. Isabela and then Luisa magically transitioned at age 5 when she got her powers. Pedro and Alma are T4T and Pedro carried the triplets. Camilo specifically has as far opposite a gender as the person he is imitating while imitating them.

And if you don't like me tearing these characters out of your hands by relating to them on a fucking social media website, you're welcome to block me, because no matter what bullshit I say, the movie still exists and your personal interpretation of it has just as much fucking weight as mine.

Take your transmisogyny, your lesbophobia, your total disregard for the bredth and intersections of POC existence, and your need to attack random people of colour for not worshipping fucking Disney the exact same way as you, and get the FUCK OUT.
