The Wildling & Her Kneeler: Chapter Two

So @vela-ships-jonsa got me looking up female Vikings and I came up with an image from deviantart under the artist Raphtor. NOT the half naked one btw...

Jon appraised the Wildling, Sansa, thoughtfully.

He knew Wildlings were savages. Everyone knew that. But were they also touched, too?

Sansa certainly didn’t look touched. She looked completely sane. And as fierce as anything.

She was even more beautiful up close. A man could get lost in those ice blue eyes of hers. And he wanted to. Desperately. She faced him with courage. She spoke like a leader, and apparently she was. Her hair, long and red and free made his hands twitch at his sides with the desire to touch it. She stood, tall, proud, her lips tinged pink. He wanted to taste those lips.

Her cloak hid much, but he could see she wore brown trousers and boots, which surprised him, and oddly enough made him even more intrigued by her.

“You’ve seen them, you say,” Jon said slowly.

“Aye. I’ve fought them.”

“And survived.”

“Just barely. Some of my people did not.”

“This is madness,” one of his men muttered.

Jon looked over his shoulder and shot them a glare. “Leave us.”

“Your Majesty!” one of them exclaimed in protest.

“Leave us. Don’t go back to the castle, but give us some space to speak.”

Once they were out of earshot, Jon turned back to Sansa. “How do expect me to believe that White Walkers are actually real?”

Her eyes narrowed. She could make a lesser man tremble with her glare. “You require proof?”

“Perhaps.”

“Proof might get you killed.”

“I can send my best men--”

She laughed, and it was full of derision. “You’ll send your best men to do what you will not? Are you not their leader? Shouldn’t you be willing to fight, too?”

“I’ve done nothing but fight for years,” he said irritably. “The Great War - have you heard of it?”

“A bunch of kneelers fighting for who will take the Iron Throne all based on their birth and nothing else? I’m familiar with it. Word does get to us, King Jon.”

“The Iron Throne is melted down to nothing. We have our own kingdoms now.”

“Wonderful. None of that pertains to me.”

“The point is, I fought in that war. I watched my brothers die in it. I fought in King’s Landing against two tyrant Queens. I know all about battle.”

“Then you should heed my warning that another is coming. And I promise you, one much more gruesome and deadly.”

“Let’s say for the sake of argument I believe you. How exactly do you want my protection?”

“There is an abandoned castle just east of here.”

“The Bolton’s. They were driven out as traitors to the King in the North.”

“By you then?”

He shook his head sadly. “My brother Robb.”

“We want the right to stay there. In exchange, we will lend you our help when the White Walkers make their way here.”

Jon laughed at her audacity. “You want Bolton lands. Are you mad? My people will never go for that.”

“They will if you tell them to.”

He laughed again. “Not quite.”

“You’re a king are you not? You are the one that rules the North. You tell them we will stay there, that we are offering our services in battle in exchange of finding safety there, and once the battle is done, if any of us survive, we will leave. Simple as that.”

He clenched his jaw. If there was one thing he could not abide, it was being told what to do. He was the king here, not her. He was the one that made the decisions and said how things would go, not her.

“I still require proof,” he said.

“You’re a fool, King Jon,” she spat. “Die then. See if I care.”

She turned to leave, her direwolf growling at him, and Ghost growling back.

“Wait,” he found himself saying. Whether it was because he didn’t want her to leave, or because some part of him actually believed her story (why else would she be so earnest about it?), he wasn’t ready to fully dismiss her. Not without setting up the opportunity to see her again.

She turned, brows arched, clearly waiting for what he had to say.

“I’ll send a raven to Night’s Watch,” he said. “If they can confirm what you say, I’ll consider it.”

She pursed her lips together and nodded curtly. “Fine then.”

“Where shall I meet you? Here? On the morrow?”

“Aye. I will be here. Same time.” She pointed up at an oak tree. “When the sun is just past that tree.”

He probably wasn’t supposed to find her endearing, but he did. He couldn’t help the smile that came.

She made her way up the hill and Jon watched her go. “You know,” he called out, “it’s customary to at least curtsy before taking leave of a king, since you’re so adamant about not kneeling.”

“You’ll get no curtsy from me, King Jon!” she called back and he laughed.

“You’re jesting,” Lord Glover groused. “You can’t possibly be serious. The White Walkers are real?”

Jon held up the missive he’d received from the Night’s Watch that morning. “Read it here for yourself. This is from the Lord Commander who has not only seen them, but has fought them. They’re real, and they are making their way to the wall.”

“It’s a trick!” Lord Manderly shouted.

“How is it a trick?” Jon asked pointedly. “I asked for clarification, and I received an answer. What is it you wish me to do now? Not believe the Night’s Watch now? Go past the wall and see for myself? I promise you, Manderly, if I do that, you’re coming with me so you can see for yourself, too.”

There was grumbling among the Lords in the Great Hall.

“I have asked the Lord Commander to send one of his men who has seen them and fought them to come and talk to us. Perhaps that will allay some of your questions, Manderly?”

More grumbling.

“But to have the Wildlings on Bolton lands?” Lord Royce asked, the old man looked as though he’d eaten something sour.

“They’d be contained at least,” Davos, at Jon’s left said. “We don’t want them roaming about raiding our lands, so give them their own.”

“This is absurd to even consider!” Lord Umber exclaimed.

“I have a duty to the North as King,” Jon said, his voice rising. “My duty is to protect the people I serve.”

“Bringing the Wildlings into the North isn’t protecting anyone!” Lady Mormont said irritably.

“On the contrary, my lady,” Jon said gently to the twelve-year-old, “If the Wildlings are willing to help with the great threat coming for us here, we could use the numbers and the help in battle. The Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch informed me they have a leader, they call him The Night King. And he can raise the dead.”

There was shouting, all of them having opinions and wanting everyone to know what they were. Jon wasn’t in the mood. He found he wasn’t often in the mood to hear what the stubborn Lords of the North had to stay. They could be stubborn and pig-headed, and after hearing from the Edd from the Night’s Watch, he had every reason to be worried. The Night’s Watch protected them, but even if they were afraid of what was coming, then there was real reason to worry should the White Walkers breach the Wall.

Besides, Wildlings had no use for them - it wasn’t as if they wanted a place at his table. They wanted safety. Sansa of the Wildlings wanted to keep her people safe, and help the fight. It was in their best interests to gain as many warriors as they could.

“Enough!” Jon shouted.

Silence fell and Jon stared them all down. “The Bolton lands are barren. There’s nothing there. Their castle is probably barely livable so the Wildlings are not asking for much. And they plan to leave once all is said and done. All I suggest for now is we wait to hear what this man from the Night’s Watch reports to us, and then we make our final decision. What say all of you to that?”

“I agree,” Lady Mormont said. “You are our King and have yet to steer us wrong.”

“I am in agreement with Lady Mormont,” Lord Royce said.

“Anyone else?” Jon asked.

Lord Glover and Lord Manderly grunted their agreement, but Lord Umber and Lord Karstark remained silent as they scowled at Jon.

Jon nodded and stood. “That’s enough for today.”

Jon headed out immediately, whistling for Ghost to join him. He was eager to see Sansa again. The night before he’d taken himself in hand more than once to thought of her. He’d found himself wondering how Wildlings made love. He imagined with utter abandon, and he trembled at the thought, excitement rushing through him.

He licked his lips in anticipation, ignoring the guards that followed him out. “Come on, Ghost. We can’t keep a lady waiting.”

BTW I still can’t get over the fact that Sorachi-sensei gave us the Love Potion arc, because it’s one of the best written comedy arcs of the whole series: I love how you can either take it at face value and say it doesn’t mean anything, or you can try to see a little beneath the surface and acknowledge how meaningful it is on some aspects, just like all the other comedy arcs.

Knowing how popular and famous Gintama is, it’s logical that Sorachi-sensei will never voice a clear position about which ships he probably has a soft spot for, but it’s not like he gave an arc or several to all the possible ships of Gintama. And I’m not talking just about GinTsu.

For example, is it really a coincidence that the other ship getting a lil’ focus in this arc is the love triangle Kondo/Otae/Kyuubei? Is it? Considering the Dekobokko arc or even, later, Kyuubei’s own resolution along with Tsukuyo’s about being a woman and being in love, during half of ch620? Or even just Kondo’s failed gorilla marriage in the last arc?

I don’t think so. :)

Anyway the whole arc is presented as being comic relief and as not to be taken seriously for those who don’t like the ships it is focusing on (that’s Sensei’s skill right here), but still Sensei subverted the whole thing and that’s what’s so unbelievably cool about this arc.

Like, I love how the introduction is that “whoever smells the aizen kou drug will fall in love with the first person they see” but even tho’ he applied that to Kagura and Shinpachi for a short while, Sensei ended up throwing even that to the bin, especially when you see how the arc went for Tsukuyo and Kyuubei.

The first thing Tsukuyo saw was Gintoki’s dick after she smelled the drug but the whole arc is about realizing her feelings for Gintoki, the man.

On the contrary, you have Kyuubei who ended up going after dicks for most of the arc (no matter who the guys were), even tho’ I doubt that she actually saw a forest of dicks right after she smelled the drug.

So it’s interesting how Sensei adjusted the very first rule of the arc to eventually make it about what he wanted to explore for his characters.

Even when you see the monologues for Otae and Kyuubei, it does seem to reflect what their personal arc is revolving around: Otae always had conflicted feelings to sort out about Kondo; Kyuubei always had this hesitation about whether to live as a man or a woman (until she made her final choice in ch620).

Granted that poor Kondo himself is often reduced to comic relief, but it should be pointed out that his monologue only reached us after Otae kinda manhandled him so, ahem, hard to have any conclusion on what he said, even if it’s not like his feelings about Otae needed any clarification. :)

It gets trickier for Gintoki because, on the one hand you could argue that “he smelled so much of the drug that he lost his sense of reason” (something I’m sure a lot of readers who disliked this arc did), but on the other, why shouldn’t he also get serious/honest moments in this arc about his own feelings when everyone else did?

Sensei is just way too good at hiding these moments amidst all the jokes, so that no one can complain about him having a soft spot for a few ships in particular.

Anyone who’d argue that Gintoki was never serious once in this arc is just shooting their own foot actually, because Tsukuyo acted way unlike herself because of the drug several times and so did Otae, Kyuubei and Kondo.

So even though Gintoki did/said stupid stuff because of the drug, if everyone else did too but also got to face/admit about some of their inner feelings, then it’s logical to think that the same happened with Gin.

And that’s what’s so amazing about how Sensei wrote this arc: I’m not saying that this arc is implying GinTsu is ever going to get canon (tbh I doubt it, even if Tsukuyo is the one who got the most focus about her feelings for Gintoki out of everyone), but to say that Gintoki has literally 0 interest in Tsukuyo would be misreading in my opinion.

If anything we already know that she’s physically his type (that pool episode/chapter with the Shogun) xD

Anyway, Gintoki has way too many issues about not wanting things to change + being scared of getting too attached to many people (because of everything that happened with Shoyo and the consequences of his choice back then) that this arc could only go max comic relief in appearance, as far as he was concerned.

Since the last arc is finally targeting Gintoki’s whole emotional trauma surrounding his choice towards Shoyo back during the war though, I guess that if Sensei wanted, he could choose to hint towards a Gin ship maybe becoming canon at the very end after daily life kicks in again, but as I said I doubt that, mostly because of the massive ship wars (tho I’m also all for Gin/Hasegawa :)).

Final thing: if anyone were to argue that this arc is only comic relief and can’t be taken seriously on some aspects, then I guess they wouldn’t see the homeless arc and its heavy focus on Katsura’s complicated dynamic with Ikumatsu as being literally the same thing but in another context, because Zura just didn’t need the aizen kou.

Just like Hijikata didn’t need it either when it came to Mitsuba.

tl;dr Sensei is good at crafting the tone of his arcs depending on what he wants to address for his characters and that obviously includes the love potion arc, which is in my opinion one of the best examples of a comedy arc that’s actually hiding a lot of meaningful stuff.

An arc is hardly ever a stand-alone in Gintama anyway, so the love potion arc can’t be meaningless if what took place ended up having consequences at some later time (like ch620 or even the last arc, post time skip).

Dissecting the narrative isn’t going to lead anywhere: no one “has to” ship Gintsu or enjoy the Kondo/Otae/Kyuubei triangle, but let’s not pretend that the characters are oblivious to each other and that comedy arcs can’t strengthen their feelings, whatever they are.

What are your headcanons for Hogwarts/Heather's au

That’s a tricky question to answer, honestly. Even after several debates in the group chat, none of us really agree on the Heathers’ houses.

Still, I’ll give it my best shot!

(I’ll mostly be working with the movie canon for this, btw.)

Veronica’s a Slytherin. Plain and simple. She joined the Heathers for her own gain in canon and had her sights set on getting as far from Sherwood, Ohio as she could. If that’s not ambitious, then I don’t know what is.

Duke, in my own opinion, would be a Ravenclaw. Sure, she’s called “envious” in the movie’s synopsis, but that doesn’t actually mean she had any intention to take power from Chandler at any point. She really only took action to do that under JD’s influence. She was more than content to just be normal and fly under the radar with her books.

Chandler is… difficult to classify. On one hand, she’s definitely ambitious. She’s got the whole school under her thumb, and tries to extend her influence to Remington in the movie, which is definitely a Slytherin thing to do. On the other hand, she’s incredibly intelligent. Maybe not in the way that the education system tries to quantify intellect, but she’s definitely very smart when it comes to her interactions with other people. In my mind, she could easily be a Ravenclaw, but for the sake of simplicity, let’s say she’s a Slytherin.

JD is a Gryffindor. They’re generally stubborn and fixed in their beliefs, and won’t hesitate to break the rules that clash with their morals. JD was doing what he thought would make things better out of some twisted idea that he was able to decide who was and wasn’t worthy of living. I’m not saying he was good, but that’s not the question here. The question is “Does he have the traits necessary to be a Gryffindor?” And the answer is yes. All Slytherins aren’t evil, and likewise, not all Gryffindors will be good.

Martha is a Hufflepuff. So is Betty. I don’t think this needs any clarification, but I’d be happy to expand on why if anyone wants me to.

Mac, in my opinion, is the most difficult to classify, but given what we know about her from the movie canon, she’s never been one to seek power, so she’s definitely not a Slytherin. She’s more of a follower, content to let Chandler make the rules. She’s not a Gryffindor, for the simple reason that, in the movie synopsis, she’s described as “cowardly.” That leaves us with Ravenclaw or Hufflepuff. In the movie, during the scene where she calls in to the radio show Hot Probs, she mentions that she’s failing math. This alone doesn’t disqualify her from being a Ravenclaw, as it’s not all about academic achievement. But, she doesn’t seem to have the same thirst for knowledge as Duke. Which leaves us with Hufflepuff. Like I said before, she’s not really a leader. She’s more of a follower. But she seems to pretty easily change loyalties once something better comes along. In all fairness, that can be attributed to the fact that Chandler died and she needed someone to tell her what to do, so we can probably just disregard that. When she called in to Hot Probs, she also mentioned that she was “supposed to be head cheerleader.” That definitely points to her being hard working like a Hufflepuff. So the most likely house for her would be Hufflepuff.

The only good things about Netflix’s Death Note Movie

1. Willem DaFoe Green Goblining it up as Ryuk. 2. L for the first half before Watari got Death Noted. 3. The rockin’ soundtrack. 4. The time that-Okay, you know what? No, I can’t even leave just one fully positive post about this you know how much goddamn BULLSHIT it was that Mia/Misa and L were adapted as waaaay more in the wrong than Light was? In the manga and anime, Light was CLEARLY the main bad guy, careening himself farther away from “well-intentioned” and “maybe he has a point” and into “irredeemable soulless fascist dictator” with every chapter and episode. Hell, in the FIRST BOOK AND EPISODE, he clearly states that he will be “the God of this new world,” and his general “I don’t give a general fuck about other people” attitude could already start to be seen. In this adaptation, Light’s all just love and an old soul wise beyond his years who wants to HELP the world out of the goodness of his heart and sense of justice. And at first, it’s not to bad, you think to yourself, “hey, this could be alright. A narrative about how absolute power corrupts absolutely with a kid who only wants to kill the really bad guys, and even then is super freaked out about it. sure, whatever” But no. NO. It NEVER turns that way! Light ALWAYS only kills for “the greater good” and is constantly portrayed throughout this movie as this well-meaning kid who’s just in so much over his head you gu-uys!

Meanwhile, Misa has been taken from her canon form as a devout Kira worshiper who was used and abused by Light to his own ends without a shred of emotion for her and has been turned into the love of Light’s life and THE REAL VILLAIN OF THE STORY! You see, Light didn’t really want to kill all those people and usher in a new era of Kira rule! It was all MIA’S influence and hen-pecking that drove Light to kill all willy-nilly! I mean, there’s this scene in the movie where Mia is showing Light a pro-Kira website where people are suggesting new people for Kira to kill, and Light brings up a point where some of the criminals could just be regular innocent people that have a beef with the poster. Mia basically tells him “Who cares? Any kind of petty crime or personal slight is good enough of a reason to kill for me! Let’s make out!” and they both go on their merry ways writing in the book. Like, fuck the writers for tossing out Light’s original characterization and motives to turn it all into a sexist, lazy, “It was all the EVIL WOMAN’S fault for tempting that poor boy!” narrative. And then Mia is killed off by Light on screen right after they have a fight where she is portrayed in the most clingy, shrewish way possible. She even says that she only killed all those people to get closer to Light. She had no justice-dog in this fight like the original Misa had. She was just in it so that Light would date her, and she somehow turned out to be the most murder-happy one after Light introduced her to the whole thing. And I’m sure that the neanderthal who wrote this drivel is patting himself on the back for writing such a great fucking script. And you’re supposed to feel bad because of course she dies by falling into a giant flower display and of course she has to be pretty when she dies. Fuck you. And while we’re on the subject of this movie going out of it’s way to justify and excuse A MASS MURDERER, let’s talk about how the movie treats L. For the first few minutes of his screen time, I honestly thought they did a good job. True, all he was doing was copying L’s mannerisms from the show and being deductive, but it was nice to see something from the books being portrayed accurately in this tire fire of a movie. But you know how everyone loved the original manga and anime for Light and L’s high stakes game of cat and mouse and how they would constantly one-up the other using their wits and intelligence and plenty of insanely thought out plans? Yeah, that’s also tossed right out the goddamn window in this one. Instead, we get an hour of L and Light basically shouting “Come at me, bro!” and emotionally lashing out at one another until one of them finally does something stupid enough to lose. It’s a race to the goddamn bottom, like the mental version of watching a drunken fistfight in a back alley. There’s no finesse, there’s no skill, just watching two guys shouting, “I KNOW YOU’RE KIRA!” and, “YEAH, WELL, FUCK YOU, KIRA’S THE GOOD GUY AND WHAT DO YOU KNOW ANYWAY?!” at each other for an hour. And L gets such a raw deal in this movie. I think he technically lives at the stupid non-ending (you don’t see Light die in the film, btw. You see Mia die, of course, because she’s an EVIL WOMAN!1! who DESERVED IT!!1, but of course not fucking Light), but even then he has even less dignity than in the manga and anime where he dies halfway through. L, in the manga, anime, and this trainwreck of a film, is the eccentric big-time elusive detective who picks up the task of finding out the identity of Kira to stop him. The only difference is that the manga and anime didn’t go out of their way to fucking destroy him. And I’m not just talking about the plot point in this failure of a motion picture that has Light easily put Watari’s name in the Death Note (yes, Watari is his real name in this and they just parade his name and face around without a worry in the world, I mean, what did you expect to happen?) that puts L into a tailspin. I’m talking about how the narrative treats L, the guy who’s trying to stop A MASS MURDERER from killing, as another bad guy, clearly in the wrong, because Light’s just trying to make the world a better place, yannow? First, he falls apart because Watari is missing and is in the hands of Kira, which okay, I don’t blame him, but he never gets past that. For the rest of the movie, he’s on the verge of tears, he can’t think straight, he’s blinded by emotion. He only manages to figure out a key point at the very end, and this was after Light openly confesses to what it is. Secondly, L is never able to officially out Kira. In light of this, his higher-ups unceremoniously fire him, leaving him an even bigger wreck. This happens around the exact same time Light is explaining to his dad what his master plan in the climax was, which is the only kind of smart thing that ever happens in this movie and is almost reminiscent of it’s source material. Point being, the narrative wants you to believe that Light is competent, L is incompetent. But you know what scene was the ultimate “fuck you” to L’s character as well as containing a horrible implication and clearly demonstrating a crucial flaw in the movie? Near the end of the movie, L has a gun pointed to Light’s head in a back alley. He’s desperate, and Light is shouting about the page of the death note stuck in Mia’s textbook that’s the key to saving Watari (because he’s such a GOOD GUY, you guys!) Since L has no goddamn idea what Light is talking about, and just knows that he’s the guy who killed 400 people and possibly his only friend, he ignores him, and turns to a man who just walked out of his shop, begging him to help and shouts, “He’s Kira!” The man stops and gets clarification that yes, Light is Kira, and then proceeds to knock L unconscious with a wooden plank to the head because he’s a fan of Kira as Light runs off to safety. Did I mention yet that L is black in this movie while Light is white? A black detective who’s implied to be the best of the best and is completely in the right is struck down because the bystander was a fan of the white mass murderer he was trying to stop. It doesn’t matter that “Oh, but Kira was only killing bad guys!” because fuck you, the movie itself established that Light and Mia were killing people on a whim and not bothering to check sources for libel. I will repeat, THE MOVIE POINT BLANK HAD A BLACK PROFESSIONAL STRUCK DOWN TO PROTECT THE WHITE MASS MURDERER THAT THE NARRATIVE TRIES TO PLAY OFF AS INNOCENT. Seriously, this whole movie exists around the premise that a greasy white boy who murders people needs to be cared about and protected from a woman and a black man who somehow convince him to commit more murder against his will because boobies or want him to stop committing murder at all costs. Ryuk, the death god that patiently walks Light through how to kill someone, doesn’t even get as many “DANGER! THREAT TO LIGHT’S SAFETY!” vibes as Mia and L do. The narrative is like, “Yeah, he’s a death god, what do you expect? BUT THIS WOMAN AND BLACK GUY ARE GONNA BE THE DEATH OF THAT POOR NAIVE BOY!” This kind of shit belongs in a trump rally, not in my movie based on a story where the main, privileged, young man was portrayed as an honest to God mass-murdering dictator who yes, must be fucking stopped. And you wanna know the dumbest thing about this movie? There are no stakes. None. The narrative wants you to care about the lives of a couple of murderers because they make a cute couple and are a pair of “good kids” who have glitter on their tongues (yeah) and are white (or at least, that’s what I’m guessing, since the only black character in the movie is treated as a hindrance and a joke even though he was in the right the entire time). Everyone in the movie’s world that isn’t a cop LOVES Kira. The movie is forever showing you pictures of people at Kira shrines, or holding, “I Love You, Kira!” or spraypaint on the walls that says “Kira Lives!” We never see the dystopian hellscape that ultimately was Kira’s world, where everyone was scared fucking shitless because Light was killing anyone who so much as looked at another guy funny. And don’t tell me that there was no crime ever in that world, there was just unreported crime. And we never see any followup to the scene where they just decide to kill people because anonymous sources online told them to. We never see any distraught partners breaking down on the news because their husband died of a heart attack for a crime he didn’t commit. We never see any innocent people die, or at least innocent people who are quickly brushed off as “cannon fodder” and are never mentioned again after they are killed (ie, the twelve FBI agents). Kira is just worshiped by EVERYONE to the point where if he just came out as Kira, nobody would be able to touch him because they’d be coming out of the woodwork to protect him (as demonstrated in the paragraph above). The only reason he DID possibly die in the end is because Light gave L the means to. These writers are the kind of people who would say, “Well, of course she got raped, she constantly teased boys with her short skirts!” The writers are the kind of writers who would describe a white male shooter as, “teen genius suddenly snaps! Unfortunate incident for former varsity football player. My home & Auto insurance has doubled thisyear. I called today to ask why as I had no claims or tickets. The reason I was told was the new way that rates are based. My agent said that your credit score is now used in the calculation of your rate. With one credit card that I pay off in full monthly and never a late payment nor any outstanding debt i would think I should have scored high on my credit report.
