Thinking thoughts of buddie is never going to be an unrequited love story so the audience would need to see the realization happen at the same time (or at least in the same episode) and now I'm even more insane about a trapped dads situation because if we assume they wanted to use the shooting for a double oh moment, the only way to top that is both of them getting injured (hello to my crazy ramblings about how love actually is the blueprint and the way they are only missing the car crash from the calls and with the way they are even doing karaoke next episode they pretty much hit every point of every couple) and to have one of them be pinned while the other is also injured but trying to do something about it? You put them trapped in a space and one of them pinned somewhere they can't get them out of or straight up not reach but they can still talk to each other? That adds so much room to play with how long it takes one of them to do something about after they are out. But that also lets them make it explicit where it's going without making it one sided for any amount of time.

Eddie pining in secret over Buck seems like a legitimate thing.
Tumblr media
There's subtext in many scenes that make me think Eddie has secretly pined over Buck to some extent. I also see more than one reason why Eddie might never act on all those warm feels he doesn't know what to do with. Just one of those reasons is that even if he has finally accepted that he himself has feelings for Buck, he simply doesn't see how Buck could ever reciprocate.
Why would Eddie think that? Eddie's understanding of Buck's sexual life is shaped by what he's heard. (And what he hasn't!)
Eddie was never around to hear Maddie's comments that imply her brother might like men the same way he likes women.
Maddie to Buck in 2x4: "So does this boy crush on Eddie mean that you're finally ready to move on from Abby?"
Maddie to Josh in 3x12: "Oh no, I like you too much to set you up with my brother." Unrelated to Maddie but still key: Eddie also missed TK's comment to Buck in the Lonestar crossover episode, where TK assumed Buck was either gay or bi and that Buck was hitting on him.....
2. Instead, Eddie was around to hear all about Buck's firehose exploits back in the days when he was a self-described "sex addict". Yes, Eddie knows about Buck 1.0.
In 3x12, When Chimney suggests Eddie try talking to a therapist name Rosie, Buck asks, "Is that the one I slept with?" Eddie responds, "You slept with your therapist?"
Most recently in 6x13 Eddie listens to Buck try to calculate all the women he's slept with.
Tumblr media
No one can convince me that the look on Eddie's face here is simply exasperation. He truly looks a little crestfallen, like Buck's words stung him.
It's just another reminder in Eddie's head that Buck is different from him when it comes to sex. Pair that with the head canon that Eddie is demisexual (everything in canon points to it, in my opinion!), and it's easy to see why Eddie would think he has zero chance with Buck. Buck once described himself as a sex addict. Eddie, on the other hand, got with Shannon in high school and hasn't ever been shown to go looking for any casual flings or want even a one-night stand. I don't think Eddie judges either lifestyle; he just recognizes they are very different. So, no matter what Eddie may have come to realize about his own feelings toward Buck, it's easy for him to think he could never be enough for Buck. And so Eddie pushes down those warm feelings, and he settles for whatever he can get with Buck. As long as Buck's in his and Christopher's life, that can be enough for Eddie. And that's still so sad to me, because it means that Eddie still isn't following his own heart.
It would be interesting for Eddie to be in earshot the next time Maddie makes a comment about a male date for Buck, though!

We gotta talk about smth yall and I,, cuz the whole Kitchen Scene™️ it’s gay enough as it is but I don’t see us putting attention on a very specific detail
We keep circling the ‘you wanna go for the title’, or ‘I can take you’, which BELIEVE ME, they are gay and hot and they should’ve kissed right there and then
But how about “and I thought for sure that day at the grocery store you were gonna take a swing at me”
BRO the way he says it, the sexy low voice, the smirk, the HEAD TILT
BUCK, MY LOVE, YOU DONT HAVE TO SOUND SO EXCITED,,,, listen yall that man wants to be roughed up in bed so bad

random thought, but one of the reasons I need buddie to be canon is that I need a scene where taylor finds out they're together, like she's reporting at the scene of a call they're both on and tries flirting with buck, then eddie randomly pops up and kisses him like "hey babe 😘 -oh heeeeey taylor didn't see you there 😊", the satisfaction it would give me would be immeasurable, I need it

My predictions for season 7, if they do make buddie canon: episode one there'll be some sort of soft opening, something that looks like it could be romantic, but still deniable given what the writers have claimed as straight so far, and Buck and Eddie will most likely still be with Natalia and Marisol respectively, but some issues start to spring up. For the next few episodes their relationships (with each other and their girlfriends) will be a sort of latent plot point, there behind everything, but not the main focus of the episodes. Episode 4, the famed Buck Bothered Bewildered, will focus on Buck (shocker) and his feelings and I think will end with him breaking up with Natalia, but Eddie will still be with Marisol. then in ep 5, Eddie will be having some problems with Marisol, as Buck starts to realize his feelings for Eddie. Buck goes to talk to Eddie, knowing that he and Marisol are on the fritz, but he sees them making up and decides to walk away. the episode ends and we're slapped with a two-week hiatus before episode 6: the Madney wedding. Episode 6 is super awkward between the two of them, but then there's some emergency (maybe before the wedding?) that the two of them have to handle and they end up trapped together (think mini bottle episode) and they start to work their shit out, and are let free in time to make it to the wedding, but not change.
not sure if they get together in the wedding episode, or the last episode, because I feel like they would get together in the wedding episode, but I also feel like the writers would leave it to the last minute.

I know we all know this, and I'm not against the whole BuckTommy thing at all (but I also wasn't against Buck and any of his love interests that weren't Abby and Taylor by the end, tbh), but like... we all know that Tommy was the safe choice for him to make, right? Like I'm sure he actually likes him, he probably was jealous of his growing friendship with Eddie. But if we think of the implications of *who* he has a crush on... having a crush on your best friend is a *lot* different than having a crush on this guy you basically just met. Falling in love with Eddie, liking Eddie, being attracted to him, risks so much more than I think Buck consciously, or unconsciously, would be willing to do. Eddie's importance in Buck’s life has been established over and over again (and the other way around). Taking the risk, the chance, of ruining that friendship isn't something I think either of them is willing to do at the moment.
In no means do I hate the story they're telling with Buck and Tommy. I just think we can't ignore the importance and risk that inherently lies within either Buck or Eddie admitting that they have feelings for each other that goes beyond friendship/family (if they do in cannon).

Okay, I've been reflecting on this since the last episode or two, but you know how a lot of fandom is digging Buck and Tommy? Leaning in hard because of how they like one another and yeah it’s sweet because Buck is getting a chance to explore and go on dates and have it not be too serious for once?
Eddie needs that as well.
He needs to have his own Tommy come along, or let’s be real he needs his own Buck mirror for a time to give him time to breathe and explore.
Also, when Buck gets jealous or doesn’t like the guy because it is his mirror? And Tommy knows why he hates him, even better.

Since my hand has been hurting too much to draw I give you my unhinged unfiltered not proofread thoughts… K so like I know what Ryan and Oliver keep saying… and I hear them… vulnerable this… new that… I love you to the core blah blah… but I need them to be so realistic about this. What do you mean we’re going to see them interact in new ways we haven’t seen before. Um yeah freakin right… the only difference is going to be that their going to acknowledge that their doing it in front of our salad. NEW? U mean they’re gonna flirt, cry, be touchy, be parental, be honest, be gay, be nervous, happy, not subtle, never not together, telling each other everything? Angsty when they’re sad? NEW? WHY DO U THINK WE SHIP THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE. Sorry it’s making me laugh but I just don’t believe them “new”. New my a*s. You’re just going admit that we’re not complete clowns. The only ONLY thing that would be new that I can think of is them actually talking about their relationships. Buck dating a guy and Eddie’s sexuality arc? But not their dynamic. That will not be new. Just louder?
Side note: Since the beginning of this show Ive been rooting for a bisexual Buck who just is. He knows who he is, Maddie does, and people are just oblivious. Basically that the extent of his “coming out” is him just talking about whatever and it’s a non thing… like “omg I dated this guy who was obsessed with alligators” and we move on. Its so powerful to have that kind of rep too. Even if they have a realization arc for him this season I would rather it be something more along the lines of him getting asked out by a guy or vice versa and him being like “at some point I felt like I had to fit the majority so I just stopped letting myself feel anything for men. Ive always liked them ive been with them…” so on and so forth. Or “yeah blank asked me out and we had fun” and blank is a guy and no one is like “U LIKE MEN?!” Or even if they are he’s just like “yeah haven’t you been knew?” Imo the realization arc there should be more Eddie realizing he’s jealous of Buck even when he’s with a guy”
On the other hand-Eddie’s sexuality arc is a really beautiful opportunity. Especially him talking with Athena and Bobby. Cause I feel like Eddie would have so much guilt or has so much guilt. Like he feels like he wasted so much of Shannon’s life when he was never able to love her in the way she loved him and then she died. And Bathena are obviously like “sometimes life works out that way but you got Christopher and a beautiful friendship and nothing would change that-do you really think she would hold that against you.” And Bobby is like “I got a second chance” Athena js like “I don’t regret that love it led me to such a beautiful thing.” Etc etc. and Eddie realizes Athena is Buck. Okay now im rambling and incoherent byee

Drunk Buck calls Eddie pretty as he helps Buck stumble into his truck and Eddie laughs it off. Except the next time, Buck cups his face with a scowl and says "why the hell are you so pretty" before passing out on his couch. And then the next time, as Buck flops on Eddie's couch, and Eddie leaves painkillers and water on the table for when he wakes up, Buck grips his wrist and stares at him with a serious face no-one that drunk should be able to make and says "you're still so fucking pretty" and then passes out, again. And Eddie goes to his room in a daze, holding his wrist, thinking what was that about one's an incident, two's a coincidence and three's a pattern???
He gets his answer two weeks later when Buck crowds him against his kitchen counter, kisses him stupid, looks at him with kiss-red lips and says "I want to wake up to your pretty face every day of my life".

Okay, can we discuss the way Eddie automatically assumed Buck asked him first and his own girlfriend was the backup for the weekend plans before he knew they broke up? Not for a second that man thinks that Buck's girlfriend is already busy and that's why Buck is asking him. No, no, he is the priority and the girlfriend is the backup plan.

Eddie is always including Buck
Whenever I watch 3x16, I get stuck on this often overlooked buddie moment. The episode is where Buck feels like he might get left behind and end up alone like Red, a retired firefighter he meets in a bar.
There's a scene near the beginning of the episode where Buck wants to go out with the rest of the firefam and celebrate after a rescue. But everyone has plans already, and Buck ends up looking dejected before slamming his locker and heading out to the bar alone.
Tumblr media
But it's important what plans each member of the 118 had that would keep them from hanging out with Buck. Hen has a date night with Karen:
Tumblr media
Hen: Tonight's date night with Karen. Buck: She can come. Hen: I don't think that's her idea of a date, but have fun.
Bobby has a date night with Athena:
Tumblr media
Bobby: Yeah and I'm sorry, Buck, but Athena and I have a date night tonight too so you guys have a good time.
Chim has a date night with Maddie:
Tumblr media
Chimney: No offense, but you are not the Buckley I was looking forward to spending my night with.
But before all those "No thank you's" came out, there was Eddie's response to Buck's invitation first…
Tumblr media
Eddie: Wish I could, man. Christopher's hosting his first sleepover tonight. Hey, you're more than welcome to come and celebrate with a bunch of nine-year-olds?
Our darling Eddie, who wanted to go out with Buck but had an obligation to his son. Eddie, who invited Buck to come home with him and be a part of his plans.
The scene of course shows Buck joking that the rest of the team will toast to Eddie's absence, but that's before he learns everyone else has date night plans. The plot of the episode delves into Buck's concern that the 118 family could potentially grow apart from each other in the distant future as years go by, like with what happened to Red.
Things had to go this way for the episode's sake, but I think had Buck known everyone else had plans already, and then Eddie invited Buck over, Buck would have considered forgoing a night at a bar alone and would have chosen to go and hang out with Eddie and Christopher instead.
The point is ….
For the episode to highlight Buck's fear of being left behind, it's so crazy to see that Eddie is right there, making sure he never is.

Okay. So I’m listening to a podcast (Let the Boys Kiss) and they did an episode on Buddie, where they go through the details of the ship and some quotes from the actors and writers regarding Buddie. They talk and discuss and determine whether the show is queer bait or coding, etc. It was actually pretty good, basically they said it’s TBD on the queerbaiting at the point which the show was at (they did the episode when the show was at 4 seasons). But anyway they wrap-up the episode by discussing the ship and gender swapping either character and try to determine if those character would be in a romantic relationship if that were the case. For instance, we keep Eddie and he’s the single father struggling to care for his son and we have Buck but it’s the female counterpart. They’re opinion, which is likely true and I guess would support the claim of queer baiting, is that yes if that were the case Eddie and Buck (👱🏻‍♀️) would end up in a romantic relationship.
Now that had me thinking. If that were the case, we have Eddie and the female equivalent of Buck, I would actually root for them to REMAIN friends. Just for the simple fact that it’s a nice idea, two people who are seen as a pair meant to date JUST BEING FRIENDS. Like a Joey and Rachel situation. Maybe they have passing moments and think “Maybe?” But they just REMAIN FRIENDS.
But then there’s Buck and Eddie as we have them and I very MUCH want that romantic relationship between them 😂 At this point I don’t know how they would set it up, I feel like it’ll never happen. There’s nothing actually established that Eddie or Buck have an interest in men. Sure they could absolutely have a moment of enlightenment. And it would seem like Buck is accepting of a relationship with a man, but there’s nothing that points to either one actually being interested in men. So that would need to be set up for it to feel like something that was actually thought about and not just done to cater to anyone.

I've added Work Hard, Play Hard by Wiz Khalifa to one of my many playlists, and now whenever it comes on, I keep remembering the Poker Date™ montage. Like the whole fucking montage is playing on my mind's eye. Coz I've seen it a normal (lies) amount of times. And it's so beautiful. And it makes me feel so giddy, knowing now that Buck is canonically bisexual. I just need Eddie to get with the program. Coz that poker scene is a fucking Date™.
