Ultra's End-of-Year Recap: Electric Boogaloo

Given how little I think of just how much more insane things can get with each passing year, I really wasn’t expecting how my blog was gonna go in 2022, but after joining an ask blog (Kudos to @another-silly-mixels-blog ), now having little more than 80 followers on here, being a major player in spreading the good word on what’s basically the biggest event in paleomedia in the last few years, and my writing and art skills getting significantly better this year…

I should really give these things more thought, huh? Regardless, I should still celebrate all of the good that came tumbling towards this silly blog of mine. Just like last year, I’m capping off ‘22 with a special ‘lil recap of the biggest events to happen to the Ultra Barrier Reef (And that’s a far better name than what this blog was named originally). Seriously, alot has happened this year, and I really couldn’t be more thankful for all of the support I’ve gotten over the years, both from fans and close friends of mine. You are all amazing! I know I said something like it last time (Maybe?), but consider this my early Christmas present, from me to you.

After seeing @bogleech talking about how Chinchou was a better design than Lanturn, I decided to make a regional form for the lil’ guy, along with adding a new evolution that does both the it and the creatures that it’s based on justice.

If I can be honest with myself, this whole was my Prehistoric Planet Arc. It basically was for alot of people, let's not kid ourselves.

At the end of the day, this was one of the biggest years for the Ultra Barrier Reef. Given that the blog is turning 5 next year, who knows what's gonna happen next? Well, that's the fun part. Down in these shitpost-infested waters, you never know what surprises could bubble up to the surface.

Speaking of surprises, I got an extra-special piece coming up to cap the year off. While you should expect to see that in the next few days, things are gonna be a bit slower for the rest of the year (Mainly due to me taking some time off.).

With all of that said, thank you all so much for the continued support, and I'll be rising back up from the depths next year. Happy Holidays, folks!

monthly game tag time!

january

1. Fayburrow

i contemplated not even including this one on this list, as it was incredibly short, but i figured i should. story was interesting & the graphics were pretty, but the controls weren't great & again, it is fairly short (half-an-hour at most), but it's completely free & overall a nice experience.

2. Heaven's Vault

honestly i have mixed feelings about this game. the story was really good, but in the end it just felt way too damn long. still, the main game mechanic of translating a language (which was specifically made for this game!!) was super cool to me, i had so much fun with it even though it could be pretty challenging lol so overall i do recommend it! besides the length, probably my biggest issue was how slow the main character moved, but still, if it sounds like something you'd be interested in then overall i definitely recommend it :)

3. Chicken Police - Paint it RED!

this was my personal favorite of the games i played in january. the art style was so unique & the mystery was fairly good, though i'd be remiss if i didn't admit it played into some harmful ableist tropes, which was disappointing. imo where the game truly shined, though, was the world-building. like i literally felt compelled to gather each & every piece of information i could, not just because i'm a completionist, but because i genuinely enjoyed learning more about the fictional world, so i definitely recommend it based on that alone lol

1. Bugsnax

if you've been paying attention lately then you probably already know i absolutely adored this game! literally my only criticism was the loading times, everything else was a 10/10 🥰🥰🥰 ...well, actually i do have one more very slight criticism but that would be getting into spoiler territory & i don't want to spoil anything in case someone does decide to pick it up :3

2. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order

tbh the controls felt super wonky the first time i tried playing this (which i actually made a post about) but upon retrying it they weren't so bad? i mean i actually managed to finish the game this time lol

but anyway, on to my actual thoughts. i thought this game was pretty good! the story was kind of hard to follow at times, but i think that's probably due to me not being super into star wars lore. also ngl cal was kind of boring to me, like i was much more invested in cere, greez, bd-1, & merrin than i ever was in cal. not that i disliked him or anything, just overall his character arc was the least interesting to me (although i do think it got better in the second half of the game). & speaking of the second half, the final fight? EASILY the best part of the entire game 🤯🤯 like honestly i have to recommend the game based on that alone LOL

3. Hitman GO

having played Lara Croft GO a couple years ago, i decided to give this one a try. honestly there's not much to say about it except that it was fun! you don't have to be super into the Hitman series to play this (i'm certainly not lol), it's really just a fun little strategy game more than anything. plus the graphics & sound design are really nice! i played it on the computer but it's made for mobile & it's only $6, so definitely check it out if you're looking for a good mobile game to play :)

loves the dogs. once he figures out how to tame them he has at least ten following him around at all times. he doesn’t bother to give them nametags or change their collar colors

no one can touch charles because his dogs will go crazy on you and no one on the server is ready to make him sad by killing one

after a while and once he finally learns how to use the game (which could take weeks) i think he would like to get into redstone builds

delia

also has no idea what she’s doing at first, but in opposition to charles, picks it up within 30 minutes

builds a really sweet little two story birch wood house for her and charles. it’s nothing crazy since it’s her first build, but lydia helps her decorate the outside and make the roof and porch look nice! of course, she has full reign of the interior

really enjoys paintings and covers the walls of their house with them. has a lot of item frames of smelted ores and gems

doesn’t love mining but does it sometimes just because she likes finding lapis and emeralds. she keeps chests full of just lapis (lydia comes to her when she needs extra for enchantments)

thinks the birds are cute and goes “LYDIA! LOOK!” whenever they do their little dance

adam

takes him a bit to warm up to the mechanics, but not as long as charles despite being unacquainted with this sort of technology

it’s a lot of repetition and he enjoys this a lot

loves to strip mine once lydia teaches him how. could do it for hours on end. he loves how methodic it is

every time he announces that he’s found something barbara gets all excited for him and if it’s something big will give him a kiss as celebration

saves all the emeralds and lapis he finds to give to delia

is just ridiculously scared of all of the hostile mobs. he can’t go into actual caves unless someone comes with him (usually barbara, sometimes lydia)

freaks out if he hears a mob’s audio cue and can’t find where it is near him. he likes strip mining because it doesn’t involve the actual cave systems (which terrify him)

will simply not go into the nether

a pretty good builder! he likes to collect materials (again, for the repetitiveness of it all) and as a tiny model/woodworking nerd finds it fun to put stuff together

takes some time to build him and barbara a really nice lakeside cottage esque house. cobblestone and dark oak wood. a bunch of windows with little planters for barb’s flowers

the maitlands as ‘preventative measures’ type ghosts (inspired by this post)

when the deetzes first arrive at the new house for renovation, nothing in particular seems amiss. there’s a few odd cold spots that never stay in the same place, and sometimes lights will turn off when someone leaves a room that they’re sure they left them on in.

during renovation, though, things are... weirder. charles would’ve fallen down the stairs if his attention hadn’t been mysteriously drawn to the plaster on the top of the landing. delia feels ominously like she should stay away from her crystal shelf -- until one day, it collapses. and for some reason, none of them like to stand in the middle of the living room for too long. 

once the house is cleaned up, adam and barbara find littler ways to keep the housemates safe. sometimes they’ll turn the running tap off or return books to lydia’s room, charles’s glasses to his bedside table, a rock to delia’s jacket pocket

as much as they know it’s safe, they can’t help but keep the family away from the spot where they fell through the floor. they worry endlessly about one of the three (especially lydia) meeting the same fate that they did, and it terrifies them

mostly though they’re sweet benevolent ghost friends :)

Im a garte fan btw. If you claim to like pathetic men but dont lile garte dni (<-joke) hes like. Okay if harry is a fucked up mess. A pathetic mountain lion. Thats harry, yeah? Garte is like. A cat. In the pathetic scale. He sucks. His name is lawrence garte. Like what do you want from me he sucks hes objectively hilarious. I wish you could force him to accompany you in the place of cuno or kim at the end. This makes the game harder. You cant run or garte will leave or he just disables the option. He does not help you any he makes people lile you less. He tries to sound like a badass he fails. Your beautiful impactful boatride is punctuated by him throwing up over the side of the boat (its the gross sound that harry makes when trying to look st the body that same sound) and then he throws a rock at the phasmid.

A little ramble, but i think a huge part of what makes The Stanley Parable so interesting to make content for in the fandom (other than the game itself, of course) is how open-ended it can be. It may have only a few characters and not much development in these characters pasts and whatnot due to how the parable works, but despite this the characters it does have are so interesting and unique, each one of them are. And because of the nature of the parable, where the Narrator can manipulate your surroundings, you can make anything happen without it being drastically away from canon/not possible in canon. And not only that, but you can come up with anything for the pre-parable and post-parable worlds.

I just wanted to ramble about how fun it is to see fan content for this game, because it really is all so unique because the game is so open-ended. The characters are all amazing and it leaves room for you to explore your own ideas without it being a separate AU or whatever, but it also isn't too open-ended in a way that would make characters flat. I love it. TSP fandom, continue being normal about this game. So much of the fanart and writing I've seen has been so unique and good
