The Kangaroos marching to Sydney. This was a snowball recruiting march which started at Wagga Wagga on 1 December 1915, 100 strong, and gathered recruits on the way. My grandfather was among this group of young men who marched for several weeks to Sydney.
Groups of recruits joined from Narrandera, Tumut and Young. To retain the march’s country character, no recruits were taken on after Campbelltown.
This was the longest of the recruiting marches - 350 miles.
The military authorities attempted to stop the march at Goulburn, intending that they should enter camp for training, but it continued to Sydney. There were accusations of misconduct both during the march and after the Kangaroos had entered training camp. They staged a strike outside Goulburn and again in Sydney over leave, both strikes led by Australian Workers’ Union members who had been recruited at Galong and Goondah.
Many of the Kangaroos were allotted to the 55th Battalion, which arrived in France in 1916.

Saturday 25th March 2023, Soldiers’ Memorial Hall Bundanoon
The one hour version of Shakespeare’s original play was a stunning success when it played to sold out performances last weekend at Bundanoon Soldiers’ Memorial Hall.
From the opening lines the energy of the performance was electric, complimented by the dynamic use of lights and sound. The mood was firmly cemented by the skilful dressing of the hall, a modern minimalist set, reinvented pixel art tartan banners hanging from the rafters and a fog machine which gave an eerie feel. The stage was set!
Here’s was a real witches brew: a “Macbeth” so mangled it makes Hamlet look sane. It had gone full-metal “Mad Max – meets New Romantics”, yanking the Scottish play out of its old, feudal state into a modern war scene with the gruff, nutcase, Macbeth, (Patrick Brennan in an outstanding performances) who looks like a cutthroat major fighting for scraps, even if he speaks like a toff. In hacking his way to the crown, bumping off anyone that stands in his way, he ends up top dog. The crown, you think, can’t be worth the candle, but for this Macbeth and manic Lady Macbeth, played superbly by Miranda Lean, it’s worth every drop of murderous blood.
Set in the round, Dean Carey (director) and Ted Ayers (writer, producer) brought one of the best productions of Macbeth that this reviewer has seen. The set, lighting, sound, and costumes (created by Ted Ayers) are all exquisite; the actors move around the stage with grace and discipline; the small moments of pain and intimacy are portrayed with clarity and realism.
The performance was given not only ‘on the stage’ but on the floor of the hall with the audience sat in four ‘pods’ set within the actors space, truly immersive theatre. As Macbeth’s story unfolded around the audience, you get the feeling of being part of, or very close to Macbeth’s dastardly plot, his tortured mind and his eventual downfall. Set in contemporary times you could not help but draw parallels to events currently in play in today’s world.
There are so many moments when this show absolutely shines serving up a Macbeth that is at once easily recognisable and at the same time completely original. Perhaps this is director Carey’s intention. Or, is it Ayers’ writing. It could be a combination of both, a collaboration of like minds. But, this is a subversive masterpiece, with an intentionally destabilising tone and ironic sensibility.
Tina Pollard choreographed the show for maximum impact, there was always something happening, groups moving in front of the audience and behind it, the anticipation and tension high throughout the whole performance
The whole team of actors has made Macbeth into an utterly engrossing and convincing piece of theatre, one which showcased the talents of the cast, allowing Carey to use his almost-literally iridescent charisma and Ayers (who also acts in the play as Lady Macbeth’s Doctor) to create a career-defining Shakespearean performance.
There are many things to praise in the production of Macbeth. I had shivers down my spine. The tension never dissipated. I cared about the Macbeths and so ultimately was saddened by their demise…horribly compelling.”
What’s in front of you? Right now? Do you like what you see? Or are you needing to change things? Are you even able to change things? Some things are just not changeable. Like terminal cancer for example. Or your partner falling in love with someone else. We can’t change that. What do we do then? Well we have to accept the things we cannot change or life will be a very big struggle. Whether we like the things we can’t change or not we are stuck with them so the longer we resist it the worse we will be.
Accept. Move on. Live freely. There’s always a new life chapter or even a new rebirth ahead. Never fear change. It’s necessary and beneficial eventually. If you’re going through a change that’s uncomfortable do everything you can to plug on through it. Don’t hold back. Just keep moving forward. This too shall pass. 🙏
