I just saw the response @burakku-jakku posted to an ask I got, which was in response to the video I posted this morning.

I want to state for the record NO I do not think Tezuka was bad, NO I do not think Tezuka was racist, I think he was a complicated person with a complicated body of work. Like, watch the Frankenstein episode of the 1980 Astro Boy anime. It could literally be used to teach Critical Race Theory, if you wanted.

I think he was a guy who grew up in wartime Japan and was dealing with the baggage of a changing nation, a nation that was both wartime aggressor and wartime victim. I think his work was complicated. Sometimes good and aspirational, other times kind of questionable. But that's just being human, and being an artist, and especially being an artist on the frontier of society.

The context that got lost in all of this is, I'm writing a research paper for university about Tezuka, trying to grapple with this complex history and place it within a larger discussion about postwar Japan and changing ideology ([1], [2]), and all of this started because I just, had a funny idea for a video about what it's been like researching my paper. If you have any interest in a genuine dialogue, here is a free, legitimate source for the paper that I mentioned in my other post, that led me to realize that there were similar themes in Metropolis.

Insofar as racial and gender mixing in Metropolis, this was in the context of the aforementioned paper. I advise you read it. It makes the case that Tezuka often uses the literary device of a 'doomed hybrid', only cleansed through death or rebirth, and the adjacency of that concept to Japanese hemato-nationalism. I was making the case that Mitchy, being caught between human and artificial, being depicted as 'between' genders, and dying the way that they did at the end of the comic, is another example of such a 'doomed hybrid'.

For my part, I'm sorry for any offense I caused.

:) been doodling cards for profs and stuff and have been binging all the black jack animated media. oh to be an unlicensed surgeon that extorts money from people and poses interesting ethical questions that dwell in neither entirely good or entirely bad.

also damn im doing pre med courses and tbh idk how people do this cuz quarantine fucked my whole timeline up. all i want to do is study the availability of healthcare to queer patients in japan and idk whether a phd in japanese studies or an mdphd is the way to go 😿. life is confusing and i am sleepy but i have my escapist tales of media.
