I've been watching so much billy and mandy lately, and I think the comedic timing and style may have had an influence here lmao! I know it's ooc for zim to not be wearing those elbow length gloves (or full on germ protective gear), please pretend he is :'D

Something I've wanted to adress to Tumblr for a while about the way they've handled MCYT, sometimes very poorly and misinformed.

1. MCYT is a GIANT category

MCYT literally stands for Minecraft YouTube. This applies to LITERALLY ANYONE WHO HAS EVER POSTED A MINECRAFT VIDEO! Hermitcraft? Mcyt. Dream smp? Mcyt. Any lets player or game focused channel who's played Minecraft in a single video or series? Mcyt. Old channels who stopped posting Minecraft years ago like yogscast and skydoesminecraft? Mcyt. Random 13 year old posting a video on their phone? MCYT. Are there bad apples in that group? Yes, but don't let that take away from the thriving communities and wonderful creators also on the platform, many of which content creation is their job and source of income.

2. MCC (Minecraft champions)

Mcc is a completely non profit event designed solely for entertainment with preassigned teams. If you don't like a player being grouped with another, or hate a single player in the event, don't try to drag the whole event down with it. This is, in all honesty, an awe inspiring event. One tournament can have more viewers than the OLYMPICS, and have had tournaments where all procedes from streamers go to charity. Dismissing or hating the event for one individual goes against the good and the wonder such an event has created.

3. Dream smp, and the lack of information and respect it is given.

A lot of people complain "it's just a bunch of chist white men" which is both 1. Disrespect and 2. Objectively wrong. This actively disregards any female (ninachu, captain puffy, etc), LGBTQ (eret, antfrost, ninachu, etc), and minority (skeppy, ponk, quackity, etc) content creators. Additionally, a vast majority of the content creators heavily support their communities, especially their lgbtq fans, like philza, tommyinnit, and technoblade. These people have made a community where channels have grown exponentially (some even appearing on the news!), communities have flourished (theres a reason it is usually the one that glitches into 1st place on trending, hell, full songs and multi millions view animatics exist on YouTube), and friends have been made both in the server and the community, all of this without even mentioning the hard work put into the server's story and events.

4. Dream, and his impact on mcyt...

I'll preface this by saying: i don't personally like dream as a person. I disagree with his political opinions and he has done and said messed up things. If we are talking about his impact on mcyt though? He's an (unfortunately) vital player. His large subscriber and viewer count helped not only revive minecraft for the general public, but actively helped and continues to help grow the channels of the people he plays with (the dream team, all dream smp members, any mcc team mates, etc). His precense in videos also MASSIVELY increases success by nearly every recordable statistic for anyone who joins his server (ranboo, philza, ponk, quackity, technoblade, etc etc etc), many of which had a significantly lower subscriber and viewer count before the smp. The same can be said for events he's in, such as mcc. Finally, his role in the dream smp. He's by no means a main character, hell, he's not only the main villain, but has been locked in the servers prison for months now with maybe an appearance in a stream once every month or 2. Additionally, he never streams specifically to avoid taking away the spotlight from other creators in the server. Do I agree with a lot of the things he's said or done? No. Do I think his wrongdoings should drag down a large group of extraordinary talented players and content creators, all of which part of one connected story they all put together with love and care, with a massive wonderful community full of loving and talented individuals? Absolutely not.

Basically, all the "dream smp fans don't interact" should be "dream stans and apologists don't interact" or something along those lines, dont drag down a whole community due to one bad apple, especially when half of them dont even know about or like said bad apple.

(Also side note i didn't know where to put. The fact it occasionally glitches out BLM and SAH is bullshit, but don't pretend that it's a MCYT exclusive thing. Shows and movies, video games, sports, and irl events have all taken it's place due to the glitchy unoptimized way tumblr pins those topics. In my opinion those 2 should have a whole separate page or area so they can't ever be unpinned via any large event like they currently do every day or 2. Tumblr thrives of of fandoms and the interactions in said fandoms (why supernatural, undertale, the lorax, etc. Became associated with tumblr to a degree), causing them to lose traction and feel out of place in a "trending tab" format, also fixing the "it glitching out of trending" issue.)

(Also you don't have to but please share this so more people know this and learn, lot of missinformatuon and straight up lies are spread about mcyt as a whole, commonly on blw and sah for some reason? Not blaming them at all, just a trend I've noticed)

Thoughts on the new Asides

Alright, I’ve watched the new video three times at this point and finally have my thoughts together. Also just in case anyone was wondering no. 

No I did not get breakfast magically delivered to me and had to eat a bowl of cereal. 

Oh well, there’s always next time. 

Anywho, spoilers below if you haven’t seen the episode yet I would not recommend reading this. 

Ready? Let’s go.

So what are my general thoughts here, I loved it. Sure there were some things that didn’t make sense to me writing wise but overall this was an adorable, funny episode that provided us with a nice break from all the angst of the main series. 

Now to get into the nitty gritty. 

Right off the bat the art for this was just amazing. Honestly the idea to make this episode as an animatic was a brilliant move. Not just because of how things are right now in the world (but we don’t wanna think about that) but using this form allows the characters to interact in ways that they can’t when filming live. We got to see Roman and Virgil engaging with the world around them and how they interacting with Thomas when he’s not at home. It also gives us an idea of what the world of Sanders Sides is like. Everyone acts a little more cartoony, but it still feels like the real world as well. 

Also the expressions on the characters, even the background ones, were perfect. You could tell so much from a quick expression or body language and as an animation nerd, I was in love from the get go. Honestly the team should think about utilizing this format more with these Asides as it allows more freedom for the characters which can help aid the story and can be used for comedy. Not saying every episode should be animated, but if they have an idea that they simply can’t achieve in live action, they now know that this format works. 

And now, on to the characters. 

So this is a Roman and Virgil episode, none of the other Sides make an appearance or are even mentioned. (Well I guess Janus is vaguely referenced with all the talk of lies going around) But I can understand their absence even though I would have loved to see them even briefly like how Remus and Janus were in Are There Healthy Distractions but besides one character (which I will get too later) I didn’t really mind and it didn’t take away my enjoyment of the episode. 

As usual, Virgil and Roman have a great dynamic and are hilarious with how they bounce off one another. I do question the timeline of this episode given how relaxed Virgil is around Thomas, considering the last time they were together they weren’t on the best footing and he wasn’t present at all during Putting Others First. But I’ll probably make another post about that. 

Starting with Virgil, it was fun seeing him act more like his pre-AA self. Getting onto Thomas’ case about every little thing was both hilarious and way too relatable (like way to call a dude out) and him explaining introvert culture was just *cheff’s kiss* It was nice to him slightly more laid back and worrying about something else other than whether or not Thomas is a good person and keeping a dark secret about his past hidden. Also the ending with him openly celebrating with Thomas and Roman was adorable. We’ve never seen Virgil with his guard down like this, letting himself be genuinely happy in front of the others. He always hides that part of him and seeing him like this just warmed my heart because that means Thomas himself isn’t feeling anxious and is allowing himself to enjoy the moment. Sure there are some moments of doubt here and there, but it was overall a great scene and I was glad they gave us a scene with them in the apartment. 

Now Roman? Oh my gosh I needed an episode where he got his happy ending and it has arrived! Considering the punch to the gut that was POF’s ending I was ecstatic to see Roman finally, finally getting something he wanted. Think about it. Roman recently gave up the callback, which he wanted more than anything, only to have it all blow up in his face and be told that his sacrifice was all for nothing. Like, ouch. But here we see him once again pursuing something he wants, and he actually gets it! He probably thought it was going to be yet another loss for him, all their efforts were for nothing, but it wasn’t! That’s one thing I love about Roman, no matter how many times he loses he never stops trying. Even when he gets knocked down to his lowest he won’t hesitate to grab the next opportunity that comes his way. And as we can see, that will and determination has paid off. 

Of course we can’t forget about Thomas himself. He’s so lovable in this, trying to just get through what should be a simple shopping trip at the mall only to have the most minor things continue to interfere with that. We don’t ever really see Thomas outside of his apartment so it’s nice to finally have an explanation for that. The focus of this episode though is his attempts to find out more about the handsome stranger across the food court and work up the nerve to talk to him. One of the funniest parts of this episode (in my opinion) is when Thomas comes up with the brilliant idea to use the stickers and pins as a way to start a conversation (which honestly could have been sparked by Logan who’s had enough of this) only for it to be shot down as a horrible idea because, what else would anxiety tell you? The monologue in the bathroom was another highlight of this episode and just, gosh Thomas’ acting here is just great. Even though we can only hear his voice there’s just so much emotion put into it. It honestly sounds like he’s crying in some parts and I loved it just as much as the bathroom guy did. 

And finally, last but certainly not least, we have the wonderful Nico Flores. I did not expect to love him as much as I did but like, my gosh how can you not? He’s that perfect mix of cool while still being a bit of a dork. Like did he just grab a stranger’s food and wander around looking for them to return it? Had he noticed Thomas go in the bathroom and was just awkwardly standing around waiting for him to come out? His relationship with Thomas is already super cute and I hope that he becomes a recurring character and love interest for Thomas.  (Note when I say Thomas I am referring to character!Thomas and not the real Thomas) Seeing as Thomas (now referring to the real one) said this episode would be important to the plot of Sanders Sides, I think it’s safe to assume Nico will be making a return and I for one can’t wait to see more of him, along with seeing how his relationship with Thomas develops. 

If I had anything negative to say about this episode, I’d have three negative things to say. 

I’ll start with one that I sorta brought up earlier which regarded the absence of a certain character that just didn’t really make sense to me, and that character is Patton. Now for Logan, Janus, and Remus, I can see why they wouldn’t be there. Logan doesn’t do feelings. Janus and Virgil would be having a hissy fit the entire time. And we all know what Remus would be doing. Not saying none of them could have shown up briefly, but their absence doesn’t bother me as much as Patton’s does. 

Patton is Thomas’ heart, the core of all his feelings, why wouldn’t the heart be present during a time where Thomas is starting to fall in love? He wasn’t mentioned or anything! Not even when Roman was literally telling Thomas to speak from the heart. It just rubbed me the wrong way that he wasn’t brought up at all and the reason for that has to do with another problem I had with this episode, and that was the choice to have the main thing keeping Thomas from talking to Nico was him being a liar. 

The episode starts with hitting the audience on the head with this idea that Thomas is struggling with lying. Despite the fact that nothing that happens is really his fault and everything else isn’t really a big deal. I just found it odd that this was the thing they were having Virgil and Roman get onto Thomas’ case for considering, well, we already had an episode (multiple really) that have already addressed this. One could say this was a result of Roman and Virgil teaming up and being upset over Janus’ partial acceptance. The reason I don’t think this is likely is because Thomas said Virgil finding out about Janus would be a major plot point and I doubt something like that would have happened off screen (honestly the timeline for this video is so confusing) 

Another reason this bothered me is because Virgil comes to the conclusion that everything that has gone wrong (the rehearsing in the bathroom, the old friend in the food court, the plant, the pretending, the hiding, the god forsaken boiled carrots) are all lies and Thomas can’t build a relationship off of lies. 

But... He literally wasn’t doing that? 

At this point Thomas hasn’t even talked to Nico yet. He lied to the guy in the bathroom regarding the monologue (who wouldn’t) and he tried to pretend to be a stranger’s friend (which backfired horribly so lesson learned) I don’t even know how the plant would be considered a lie (and Virgil was the one who pushed him over there anyway) I’m not sure what Virgil’s referring to with the pretending and the hiding I can only assume is when they hid in a trashcan (unless I’m not meant to take that literally) and with the carrots Thomas should have just walked away the moment he saw the rainbow pin on the backpack. That was his fault.

But not once did Thomas lie about anything to Nico. In fact when they finally started talking Thomas was nothing but honest with him, embarrassingly so. The thing Virgil was claiming to be the source of the problem just, wasn’t true. It didn’t make sense to me and still doesn’t even after my third viewing. What I had originally thought was going to happen was that they’d come to a conclusion that tied into Moving On, the episode where Thomas dealt with the aftermath of a break up with Roman, Virgil, and Patton. 

Wouldn’t that be something they’d be afraid of? Say Thomas managed to hit it off with this guy. They start dating, everything is going well, only for it to end the same way his last relationship did. Wouldn’t it make a little more since for the main thing to be holding Thomas back is the fear of getting his heart broken again? Of losing yet another person he loved? 

Which brings me back to previous point of Patton not being there. Considering these three were the ones to help Thomas resolve things in Moving On, why shouldn’t these three be the ones to be by him when beginning a new relationship? 

Unless Patton’s been avoiding these two since currently Virgil is still on rocky ground with Patton and after what happened in POF. But again we have no idea since we don’t know when this episode takes place (well as of writing this I have no idea considering how long it’s taken me to write this Thomas may have tweeted about it or something) 

Another potential reason for Patton not being there is basically what I said earlier. In Moving On he was the one struggling the most since he’s Thomas’ feelings. He could have been overwhelmed by all the emotions Thomas was dealing with and simply couldn’t bring himself to show up. This has me hoping that we’ll get a follow up Asides episode where we get to see the other side’s reactions to Nico. If not all of them at least Logan and Patton since it’s been awhile since those two had an episode together. 

If that’s the case then I can understand keeping Patton out of this one. But that doesn’t change the fact that I find the whole “lies” thing to be a bit ridiculous. 

The final thing I have some of an issue with is how Virgil was the one to “save the day” in this. Throughout this episode Virgil was the one causing the problems (which isn’t to say anything bad about Virgil it’s literally his job to protect Thomas and that includes protecting him from rejection and heartbreak) while Roman was pushing Thomas to go take a chance. I dunno, this one isn’t as big of an issue since I still like the conclusion and Roman calling Virgil brave. It just would have been nice to see Roman going for something and getting it himself. Or at least him and Virgil deciding together that they weren’t going to let this opportunity go. 

I dunno, I’m kinda impartial on that one. I just want to see Roman succeed. 

And there you have it. Those are my thoughts. As usual, you may take them with a grain of salt. But also feel free to share your own opinions on this episode. It’s definitely become a favorite of mine and is up there with my other favorites. 

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go be sad because bathroom guy had his hopes and dreams crushed and he deserves justice.

“Oh look at me, so ordinary

-I guess it’s pretty fitting to start the list off with a very Middle School Kirishima kinda song! Something I really love about this one is that it’s very steeped in this idea that “oh I’m not great, I’ve been blown up my whole life but I’m really nothing special, I should just stop pretending to be” but then the choruses and the bridge are so upbeat that it feels like it’s made peace with it! Maybe even like it’s celebrating it? Like, this isn’t wallowing in self hatred, it’s an anthem and I feel like it’s the kind of thing Kirishima would listen to in middle school and think “yeah, I’m not special, so what, who cares” 

ii. Whatta Man - I.O.I 

the one w the classic “whatta man whatta man whatta man” hook but a kpop song

-as kirishima is the only boy alive, this song talking about a very good man must be dedicated to him

-put in the ioi ver instead of the classic one bc i love girls 

iii. Embers - Owl City

“And we'll watch the sky as it fills with light

And though the embers are new, whatever you do just don't let the fire die” 

-Something you are gonna learn very quickly about me is that I Love Owl City 

-A lot of Owl City songs are about overcoming hard times and facing forward and this one hits me more than a lot of other generic Encouraging Songs because “don’t let the fire die” feels like such a genuine sentiment, like more than “you’re a firework” or whatever because it encapsulates the idea of “this is your decision to make and something you’re gonna have to put in the effort but you can turn your life around, you don’t have to hate yourself, you can make the decision not to” which I feel is a very Kirishima sentiment

iv. I’m Gay - Bowling For Soup 

“It sells records when you're sad these days, it's super cool to be mad these days -

I think rock and roll is really funny when it's serious” 

-now. there is the very obvious meaning here

-But mostly this feels like a very Kirishima-ish song to me since it’s all about getting out of the “everything sucks and talking about that all the time makes you cool” mentality and not taking things so seriously, focusing on the positives and trying to make other people happy too!

v. I’ll Make a Man Out of You - Mulan

(picking a lyric to express kirishima in this one feels dumb when all you need to see this as a Him song is to imagine him belting it out) 

-the 12 year old that still lives somewhere inside of me and spent hours watching videos w titles like Total Drama Character Theme Songs on youtube is Extremely proud of herself for this one 

vi. The Squip Song - BMC 

“Freshman year, I didn't have a girlfriend or a clue

I was a loser, just like you”

-Look the fact of it is this song has extreme Kirishima Energy and to convince you of that I could write a lot of stuff or I could just link you the animatic I made please watch it I worked very hard

-Lyrical content aside I think the funky guitar and the horns and the amount of screaming in this song are Very kirishima 

vii. Fiji Water - Owl City 

“If I only knew then what I know now, I’d stand like a one man band, and I’d say

‘All this is new to me, but here’s how it’s gonna be - there is more to me than meets the eye” 

-owl city part 2! It’s about him seeing himself as a regular kid but getting called by a record label and flown out to talk about a record deal, and it’s cast in this light of “I didn’t see myself as much then and I was surprised it could all happen to me” but trying to make the most of it anyway, which reminds me a lot of Kirishima still doubting himself but getting to UA anyway

-The last line “I laughed when I got back home and I thought, ‘there’s no such thing as luck’” is my absolute favorite part of the song and when I imagine that as kirishima getting home after crushing the entrance exam and falling face-first onto his bed laughing...well! a bitch is soft!

viii. I Wanna Meet Richard Dreyfuss - Gabriel Gundacker (the guy who made the “you are my dad” vine)

“Hello, don’t mean to interrupt your flow

But I’ve got something you need to know, and it’s very specific, so here we go:

I wanna meet Richard Dreyfuss” 

-This song is from an album dedicated to a fan’s process of wanting to meet, NEEDING to meet, giving up on, trying to forget about, (brief intermission about saddles as he forgets about), apologizing to, finally meeting, and saying a satisfied goodbye to Richard Dreyfuss and it’s one of my favorite albums of all time

-At first I just thought the song sounded pretty Kirishima in terms of earnest effort and slightly-soulful high notes but then someone sent me an ask like “WHY IS THE RICHARD DREYFUSS SONG ON YOUR KIRISHIMA PLAYLIST” and I realized it would totally make sense for Kirishima to write an entire album about wanting to meet Crimson Riot, so, checkmate 

ix. Angel, Please - Ra Ra Riot 

“Long as I feel I can tell the danger did it - oh, you guard yourself, you do

I wasn't hurt but I know you're the curse, I know you were” 

-i am not gonna lie the first time i heard this song I just wanted so so badly to make it abt kirishima bc 1) album cover is red 2) band name has riot in it

-Anyway so after a month of listening to it w that mindset I can say pretty confidently that this song makes me think of Kirishima’s big fat crush on bkg so really it should be in the krbk playlist instead of this one but I do what I want 

x. Beautiful Times - Owl City

“My heart's burning bad and it's turning black but I'm learning how to be stronger” 

-Owl City part 3 :)

-This one is the most focused on the dark side of things and the “struggling through the depression” angle but I really do think the ending is a beautiful sentiment and that line up there reminds me of him

-I feel like...things never get easy right away and there’s always gonna be some doubt there no matter how good you feel, and the only thing we can do about that is to keep trying to make things better

You're so right about the Will Roland fanart problems. It seems like back when Will Roland was only known for Jared people were way more proWill because he could be their funny meme boi who ate bathbombs but now that he's a lead with all these emotional songs it's like God forbid he's not their "twink bby". Idk it annoys me so much especially when people draw the rest of the Broadway cast and still use WillC or do an animatic with WillRs voice and WillCs character ugh like. Accept the Roland pls

really like, i have never come across any signs of there having been any pattern in the deh fandom of ~taking issue~ with will’s Abilities to sing or play the part of a struggling teen or whatever like what crops up re: him being the lead in bmc.....it also is unsurprising yet disappointing that like, jared and alana are so easily completely ignored, but when they Are acknowledged it’s super flattened interpretations like, either they’re both hypocritical jerks (just based on evan’s gfy accusations basically lol) or if they’re actually viewed in a positive way it’s just like, alana is your friendly local Model Student and jared is memes and neither of them are in the way! :3

you litrally cannot ignore jeremy the Whole Entire Main Character tho and also like. can’t ignore the fact that caring about jeremy as a Romantique Lead is ahhh important to many ppl in the fanbase? so him being regarded as ~less cute~ is more of an Issue b/c the character must be taken seriously and is the sympathetic hero and has a lot more solo material / more of Any material / more focus than jared does in deh.........you Have To Look At Him and care about his actual feelings and not just misinterpret the character as “has no serious emotions b/c he doesn’t say serious things in a serious tone” the way ppl misinterpret jared. there’s the assumption that someone who is good / sympathetic should also be attractive / cute / Personally Appealing To Look At and that wasn’t as much a conflict when ppl didn’t think it was important to sympathize / care about / pay attention to jared too much, and the “conflict” of caring abt jeremy’s capacity for a romantic relationship but that’s less important if he’s not as Cute also not being as much an issue when most people don’t care about jared’s romantic feelings or think that they exist despite jared being in love with evan But Anyways

like it is wild the things people will just make up to “justify” their Dislike for will, which has only manifested as apparent Issues thanks to him playing jeremy rather than jared........there’s the classic “mm idk i don’t think he can sing that well” approach which like. some people are just trying to say they do not like the inherent descriptive qualities of his voice, which is more nasal obviously and don’t anyone come in here with the “Actually the Technical definition of Nasal re Vocals is” b/c we know what i mean, alright? nasal voices are not considered ~serious~ and there’s the kneejerk dumb-annoying-loser-nerd association. god knows that jeremy heere canNot have characteristics that could be automatically judged as irritating and unappealing. then there’s the notion that He doesn’t have the (vocal) range!! which like. do you honestly think they would cast someone who doesn’t have the correct range. you’re aware that will roland was being considered for the part of jeremy in the two river run up to the last round of callbacks. you know that the song that was literally written expressly to suit will roland’s individual voice and singing abilities makes use of his falsetto which people go “omg he can’t hit those high notes” except sometimes when they misattribute his falsetto to other singers they suddenly find it worth complimenting. and then you get people who like, want to subscribe to this softened version of it and get all backhanded like “oh i think will’s vocals are improving whew that’s good” in any random video and always Only single him out apparently like. did you think he gets worse with experience? you don’t wanna talk about any of these other professional singers improving or worsening or anything? only wanna give ur assessment of william’s huh

honestly i for real haven’t seen the 1.0 version b/c i’m here via will roland in the first place & i’ve never gotten the impression that there’s some Essential Content i’m missing out on by having only seen 2.0........but between a) people complaining that will r’s jeremy is Too Frustrated He Shouldn’t Be That Angry It Makes Him Less Sympathetic and b) saying just as a point of comparison betwixt the depictions that will r’s jeremy is more frustrated and c) i haven’t read That much bmc fic but people sure talk about jeremy being like five seconds away from bursting into tears at any given moment which like, okay yeah aren’t we all, but also i presume this stems from will c’s apparently Sadder portrayal of jeremy. i almost forgot where i was going with this one but i think it’s just that yeah people truly take issue with will r’s jeremy being more frustrated and it’s like you realize there’s no Right or Wrong portrayal / interpretation even if you prefer one for whatever reasons......theatre just is Like that.......you have a slightly different portrayal during ever performance even from the same actors, and you’ll often have different actors playing the role........yeah people usually are attached to the first performance they see / have that as their Standard and that’s fine, it’s just like, you don’t have to decide that’s an Objective view and that you have Objective issues with everyone else’s take. 1.0 is still there for you

it’s a bit clearer too with bmc moreso than deh that people aren’t super willing to accept how will roland Looks b/c like, thanks to will connolly’s jeremy having the long hair thing you can Tell The Difference In Which Actor Is Represented when ppl draw the character even if the rest of the features are kind of “generic” (and how even the costuming isn’t a dead giveaway since ppl will draw connolly jeremy in 2.0/3.0′s outfits) and it even serves to specify the actor in writing format too if they mention the hair lol........and honestly?? this fact is one of the most damning things lol in that people the reason so many ppl continue to produce connolly-based jeremys is Not because for whatever reason they can’t / it’s too difficult to draw a will roland lookin jeremy......like a lot of the time The trait which serves to distinguish between the two is the hair thing. people are adopting jeremy’s new costuming and stuff but choosing to make sure we know that jeremy does not Look like will roland and the clearest indicator of this is the longer hair thing......which also means that for many people the main effort they’d need to exert to make it clear they’re drawing wrol jeremy would just be to....shorten the hair. And Yet!!!! it is apparently beyond people to do this

!!!! hi, i actually am not very active on tumblr but CONGRATS UR MY FIRST ASK/MESSAGE LMAO, and AH THAT MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!! IM SO GLAD U WANNA START ANIMATICS!!!okay ill try my best and give u some detailed tips cause i really have been putting off a vid for how i make my animatics for the longest time so i might as well answer this:1. FIRST of all, i listen to the song i wanna do an animatic for THOROUGHLY, and i ‘think’/imagine what i want to animate for each scene as i listen to the song, kinda like what first comes to mind! for example, i knew in my sexy animatic i wanted to have that 3 pose/costume thing at the chorus when i first listened to it. then, ill do brief notes for each lyric of the song about what i want to do (they can be anywhere from “medium long shot profile view of character in this pose” to “aha just the character smiling and stuff lookin all happy”) if i have more time to plan everything, ill draw brief thumbnails of each scene on paper or underneath my frames2. i think of drawing each pose like they’re in a comic! in a comic, you dont have much movement, but still enough artistic story telling to show how the characters act/move from place to place, so think of an animatic like an animated comic! also keep in mind KEYFRAMES, which are the main poses that appear when someone moves, for example, if you have an animation of someone throwing a ball, 3 keyframes would be holding the ball, throwing the ball, and the hand reached out after the ball is thrown. so, when you do frames, keep these keyframes in mind, and think “how do i show the most movement with the least amount of frames?”3. study different camera angles of a person, at different perspectives and how a body would look from different sides. this might sound irrelevant but i had to learn how to draw the back of a head for the first time during an animatic, cause when ur drawing normally, especially if its not for a comic, why would you need to know to draw from those angles??? when ur animating ‘conversations’ its boring to show two people with their faces both visible, so you might have to learn to draw back view 3/4 angles and all that jazz ;D4. so,, editing,,, i use sony vegas pro and the thing that saves my life are MARKERS!! when you listen to something, you can add a little flag that shows where a new lyric starts or when theres a key word or etc. but this is the key to getting the frames to sync up! im sure most affordable editing programs have some form of a marker system, and make sure you find it, cause it SAVED MY LIFE :,))5. another tip for editing is that make sure you know your program very well, so you get the best out of it!! i used to do a lot of kpop edits (regrettably, even tho they arent posted anywhere i still regret them) so when i wanted to start doing animatics i already had my video editing skills ready, and it was really helpful!! even then, i learned SOOOO MUCH about sony vegas pro just from doing animatics and knowing a lot of the ins and outs of the program gave me a lot of freedom! this also applies to the drawing program you use, make sure you know what brushes you’re going to committ to and make sure you know what file format you’re using and how detailed your frames are going to be! consistency is important!6. this is already really long so ill keep this last one short, if it gets tedious after a while, try doing sketchier art/dont spend so much time on the frames! cause.....oh god...it can get....really tedious.....something that i find SUPER helpful is having a ‘time’ deadline/schedule, for example, i average on animating around 30 seconds of an animatic a day, 20 if im lazy and 40 if i have absolutely Nothing to doi hope that was helpful!! i really should probably make a vid someday lmao but WE’LL SEE i still have a lot to learn!! Collab Project - Second and Third Animatic and the copious amount of modelling and colouring for the Final Piece

For the last week on the collaboration piece, I really went all out on trying to make this piece something fantastic to watch as I spent so much time trying to make everything as detailed as possible. That’s not to say that I didn’t do a lot of animation though as I felt I really refined the Spirit’s animation as well as Anng’s movement respectfully.

Starting with the modelling of the environment, I followed a few tutorials learning how to make tree's specifically low poly ones so I could stay on theme with the islands I’ve made around the world I’ve made. There were two types of trees I ended up making, I very low poly (which is the video tutorial here) and one a  more complicated low poly that involved multiple types of faces. Between the two, the tutorial trees were so much easier to do and probaley easier to make as well. However, the more detailed low polygon trees were tricky but they were really worth it as I made some really interesting janky trees that help varied up the really easy to do trees in my scenery.

In addition to making trees in Maya, I also made some leaves to go around the Monk character as well as debris across the islands. Weirdly enough, this was the hardest thing to model due to how many creases you needed to make in the leaf as well as angling it just right so that it realistically looked like a leaf. The first time I made the leaf I made it way too thick to be counted as a leaf which is what led to me sticking to the tutorial so closely so I wouldn't stray off too much. Whilst the leaf was really tricky to model just right, the whole repetition process was still really fun to do which I can say the same for when I was modelling the trees too.

Alongside the leaves that I made as foliage across muy scene, i also made a couple of smooth rocks to differentiate the rocks that are keeping Anng in to help resent these rocks are very special. In addition to this, I also made patches of grass with sounds really easy to mold and make which you would be right. However, its’s the placement of these grass patches that are so important as this is an overlooked detail that’s just forgotten bout when looking at the environment. I felt like I was specifically putting patches of grass like I was individually placing the min a Plasticine collage with the amount of attention of detail I took. Sure people might overlook the grass patches when they watch my sequence. But i’m just happy that if someone was to look at one of my islands individually, they would see how much craft I’d put into the scenery which that in itself could be showing of ‘Passion’. 

How to model a leaf in MAYA2017

I think this next part was just in general the trickiest thing I had to this week due to how many steps was included to even try and make it let alone have the chance to animate. I am of course talking about the flower ornament that symbolises passion within the Monk as he emerges from the rock formation. 

Before I get into the process on how I managed to make the flower animation, I realised at the time that I wasn’t using the right flower as a passion flower doesn't always technically symbolise passion. The flower that more symbolises passion is the yellow Iris flower. A three petal flora with 3 small little tendral petals inside of the flower. Once I realized this was the right flower that I needed to symbolise passion  for my Principle Piece, I followed the tutorial online detailing how to create this flower petal design animation into Maya. Al;though on top of that, Jon was kind enough to make a special tutorial just for me to make the tutorial that I’ve been referencing since the start I saw that video.

The way I made the flower petal animation was through making the petal size and selection in Photohsop and then I painted over the selection in another layer creating my fresh layered petal almost ready for Maya. Before I could export them to Maya, I had to export both a colored version and a black and white version so that Maya could register how bright the image will be as well as evaluating the transparency of the image too.

Once they’re in Maya, you need to got to the Hypershade tool and create two texture files and connect it the same way its shown it to an a empty aistandardsurface plane. After all of these steps, you should be able to see the petal in Maya. Whats really cool now is that if you adjust the d point towards the center of the petal and move to the right most angle, you’ll be able to spin the petals around in a 360 degrees fashion.

Getting the petals into Maya wasn’t actually too bad in retrospec, I think for the animation side of things I seemed to really struggle due to the object plane really not wanting to behave itself as it just likes to either move its own way or just do it’s own thing when I’m not even touching the flower as some playbacks of the flower sprouting, it would glitch and gitter across the playback. Although despite theses problems, I think the sequence was really worth it as it allowed you to create some really pretty flower blooms which I wish could of explored more in the project.

I think overall the flora I created for the scenery will most likely be overlooked from the everyday viewer when they watch my sequence but like I said before, even if there’s one person that takes interest into the work I’ve created, that would mean the world to me.

The Landscape of the Scene

With the sky lighting for the animation, I always imagined it to be a very autumn setting with a pink and yellow sky as it emits very warm feelings to me as well onto the character too. Plus I think there’s a range of coulours on offer atm that ‘s happening in the render scene and going through the colour palettes we already have, these choice of colours just seemed so perfect to me especially the kind of mood it gives off too. 

One render I did want to talk about here was the 3rd render I produced as instead of ornage/yellow lighting inside of the cave, I’ve gone for a more purpley interior from the firefilies. This colour change was because of how too similar the colour inside would be to the outside and really wanted to go for something in contrast instead to make it feel you’ve been taken to a new world. Personally looking at the render, I feel it really achieves at that perspective a lot especially when Spirit peeps inside the rock and you see the dark purples everywhere with some of the fireflies illuminating you.

First Animation Sequence

Watching back on the first animation sequence I did with this detailed scenery is an immediate step-up from the previous animation that I did in the last blog post as this is an immediate upgrade. I guess the things I feel critical about if that the flower bloom isn’t very natural and acts way too soft (but don’t get me wrong looked really cool), I’m not too sure of the fast spinning of the Spirit as I may cut that out to make it more suttle and less fast to watch. In addition to that, i plan to add in additional animation into the Spirit's face as it’s very static looking with its face always staring like a blank slate. But other than these changes and maybe a couple of small ones I say here, the sequence is looking really good so far which I can only improve from here personally.

This is a much updated and refined piece of animation I did also in the last week till hand-in. Here I involved a lot more character and emotion into the Spirit as he moves from scene to scene making him more alive and joyful to look at which I was really happy with in addition to improving the animation to Anng’s shoulders as he breathes in and out. Honestly there’s really not too many gripes I have with this animation compared to the previous one as this feels so good to watch in comparison.

The sequel to the story is already sort of in my head, but I can't get to that point because I'm so stuck and bogged down with the first story.

I've also been trying to model a character so I can work on a face rig set-up---but organic modelling is SO NOT MY THING. The only other thing I've been working on is a sort of bdsm dungeon that fits in a shoebox. I haven't looked at it in probably a year. Most of it's modelled, it just needs texturing. The point was to comp it into video footage of an actual shoebox being put on or taken off a shelf.  >> Tattoo design >> So. When I was a wide-eyed and innocent frosh, with the taste of freedom from my very demanding (but lovable) parents fresh in my heart, I ran out and got a tattoo. I designed it, which may have been stupid, but whatever. It's an abstract take on a claddagh ring, just the lines, and with spiky sort of wings instead of hands. It's on my lower back. Which was fine for a couple of years. (Then, the term "tramp stamp" became a thing.) I feel like it's important to say I do not regret getting it. It was freedom. Probably the first I felt ever, really, and I will always love it for that. But. I didn't take care of it as well as I should have. And I gained weight (because college) then lost it, gained it and then some, lost it, and gained more, and so on. So the tattoo is a little fuzzy. And I do feel shame about that. I've been trying to turn this little fuzzy thing into a larger back piece that's like a collage of different style and different elements and imagery. I can't do the finer details because I'm not that good at drawing, but I've been trying to rough something out so I can go to an actual artist (someday lol) and give them the sketches and go from there.

But getting all of this stuff done is contingent on my shoulders and arms not being sore enough---or just being numb enough---so I can sit and work on this stuff. (Backstory: my work desk is well on its way to killing me, and there's no alternative; we're in those call-centre almost-cubicles and the desks are about three to five inches too tall for me. Shoulder and arm pain for years. Goes to show how artists rate, huh? Can't even get a desk to fit! /rant+whining)   So, I have a bunch of things on the go, and when I feel like I can move without wanting to scream, I tinker on something that matches my mood or snags my interest. Eventually (hopefully), I'll finish something.

Banana Fish - You know it’s funny: I actually wanted to write a series on Korean Dramas and how I completely forgot I had a Dramafever account that I already paid a yearly fee on.  But then Banana Fish came along and I tossed that plan...softly back into the storage room because I might pick up on it later.  Banana Fish is a show adapted from an 80s manga that’s about a lot of upsetting topics without being too gratuitous and disrespectful, but they may deter you from watching, which is fine!  Don’t pressure yourself to watch something if it might cause you harm.

However I want to say one thing: I don’t think you’re wrong to be interested in Banana Fish because you liked Yuri on Ice.  I loved Yuri on Ice.  So instead of saying how its  n o t h i n g  like Yuri on Ice I’ll say something I DO think these two have in common: its about a relationship between two men that’s treated as pivotal to the show.  They’re not treated as a joke, or a fetish, or a tease.  There's not a “but one of them has a girlfriend!” plot point to give rude people opportunity to say how delusional you are for thinking they were together.  The relationships are, to me, at the heart of the show, and personally, both shows are really good when it comes to the relationship, though obviously facing differing themes and circumstances.

This Review of the first episodes will give you clearer warning signs than I can.  Right now it’s at Episode 2 on Amazon Video but if you can’t access it I won't tell on you if you find other means of watching it.  You could also ask around for a way of reading online or wait for the manga to be reprinted.

I also decided to write my thoughts on the show throughout (posts made by me are here,) and am currently planning one that’s about how the relationship goes from brief acquaintances to memorable ones.  This doesn’t sound like a big stretch but don’t worry I managed to split it into three part.  Haha...ha...

The Actual Best Spider-Man Game by The Cosmonaut Variety Hour - A look at a Spiderman game that’s not Spiderman 2 from a guy who loves Spiderman.  Spiderman.  How did I suddenly get into Spiderman?  Homecoming.  Why?  Bad School News Program that’s why.  Also heroes who put on a costume to give strangers directions are immediately my favorite.  So it’s nice to see a video pop-up about Spiderman, even when its not always about homecoming...Spiderman.

BABIES...BABIES...BABIES...Sims 4 by Markiplier

I mainly lost sight of Markiplier for a awhile and then I saw this video on my suggestions.  I play Sims 4 on and off (and always lose my save and thus have to start over every time) and oftentimes I have a habit of wanting to have all my Sims healthy, happy, and working toward their goal.  In other words try to be...goooood….? to my sims?  Markiplier however...does not know how to optimally play it.  And it’s a sight to behold.

Confession- Every time I hear the opening jingle of FilmJoy videos I go “Is this a holiday themed episode?”  It’s the bells I tell ya!  Other Confession-  I haven’t watched Shaun of the Dead since I was 12!  I should fix that.  This video reminded me to do so.  Thanks!  (It also, you know...does a very interesting analysis outside the realm of just its humor and is a good watch)

“The West” is being destroyed by SJWs and Feminism?  Oh noooooooo...okay this one is political but if you’re tired of being told you’re destroying civilization because you complain about...anything ranging from real world devaluing of human lives for ideals to boob plates in games...ContraPoints is downright cathartic.  Also likes corndogs...a lot.  This might not be for kids...okay its definitely not for kids.  There’s a lot of corndogs in this video.

Waypoint 

Waypoint uploads a podcast twice a week, which is nice because they’re my favorite.  They have insightful commentary on not just games, but games journalism, politics around games, game typos, and so on.  It’s an interesting listen, while still being enjoyable.  This week they discussed fans who are so entitled they actively set out to get two developers fired...and the company just complies?  It’s infuriating and like...bad?, but the waypoint team still keep their heads about it, and I think its an important listen to remind people to be a little more decent to the creators who make the content that they supposedly care about.

Oh No, Ross and Carrie!

Ross and Carrie explore fringe science, claims of the paranormal, and if they have hot drinks!  They’re two sorta investigators that investigate different topics ranging from Flat-Earthers to Scientology to Brain Altering Drugs to currently Out of Body Experiences.  If you’re interested in these sort of things definitely check them out!

My Brother, My Brother and Me

A comedy show with three brothers where they’re sent odd stories and give nonsensical advice as well as weird yahoo answers.  I don’t know how to describe to you the weird aura I get from this show, but if you happen to find yourself washing dishes or putting away clothes give this one a whirl while you got your hands busy.  For adults and cool babies only.

A Friday Show summing up all the trending news of the week.  If you can’t stand news but you still feel obligated to know what going on Trend Like These is a good way to get your weekly fix without crumbling like a peppermint wrapper every time you turn on the tv.  Also the hosts do try to bring up the mood and are music to my ears.  Also they have time stamps WHICH EVERY PODCAST SHOULD HAVE.

A Doctor talks about the weird turns medical science goes to throughout history with her Comedian husband.  This week they talk about the Bends because wow those Thai boys and their coach’s rescue was astounding and miraculous wasn’t it?  Let’s talk about how terrifying diving in caves is now that they’re safe.

The Adventure Zone

The MBMBAM show plus Dad play a roleplaying game together and its very charming and funny and makes sense.  Currently they’re in their second campaign of sorts with a Monster of the Week format.  This week was an Interlude where there’s a very important discussion on onion soup that I relate to.

Calvin Reacts to Overwatch Finale: Profiles

I’m not even sure if anyone is reading these things, but I’m sure as hell going to finish them. 

Alright, here we are on the last section: the character profiles. I admit, I’m still not at all sure what’s going on with the majority of these characters, which might mean it was a bad idea to watch all the shorts first. But ah well, too late for that now. For now, it’s time to get straight into what I’ve been waiting for... the profiles! (Note: the format is going to be a little bit different this time; I kind of want to get all this done in one post. I’m also not going to be paying much attention to the gameplay section, since I don’t own the game and probably won’t any time soon.) 

GENJI 

Okay, so this is basically the story I kind of inferred from “Dragons”: Hanzo and Genji had a falling-out, Genji was left for dead, but he ended up getting saved by Overwatch and rebuilt as a cyborg. It’s interesting to learn that Genji is (at least as far as I can tell) the good guy in this scenario, since he was the one who wanted nothing to do with all the criminal shit that their family was involved in. Also interesting to see how Zenyatta is involved in this; I like this new sense of interconnectedness between the characters. 

McCREE 

Now here’s someone I barely saw in the trailers, and not at all in the shorts. I have to say, I like the idea; mercenaries almost always have something interesting going on. I still have no goddamn idea why he’s dressed like a cowboy, though; that was kind of the thing I was most interested in finding out. Ah well, I guess we all have our own thing. 

PHARAH 

Okay, based on her gameplay style, I’m officially calling her “Miss Explosion”. 

On the serious side, I can kind of relate to her in terms of getting to something just in time to find that whatever you were excited about was already over. It happens to me a lot with shows and book series I’m interested in; on the one hand it’s nice because I get to see everything at once, but on the other hand I don’t get the excitement of waiting for the next episode and the odds of me getting spoiled are overwhelmingly larger. It happened with Fablehaven, it’s happening with Homestuck, and it’ll almost definitely happen with Kingdom Hearts III. Goddamn early Japanese release dates. Let’s hope for a worldwide release for once. 

...did I say that was the serious side? Because I probably shouldn’t have. Anyway, another cool bio. 

REAPER 

Okay, here they just kind of cheated. I came here looking for information about who Reaper is and what’s driving him, and literally the second sentence of the bio is “[Reaper’s] identity and motives are a mystery”. Although the theory they do provide (which, let’s be honest, is probably going to be the one they go with or else why bring it up at all) is pretty damn cool. Still, wish we could have had some kind of backstory. 

SOLDIER: 76 

Yeah, this is basically the same bio we got from the animatic. Really should have read these earlier. Hey, don’t blame me; blame TVTropes for listing the profiles last. 

SOMBRA 

Well, for one thing she’s apparently capable of hacking the fourth wall to remove her personal information. 

Alright, so here’s where we’re starting to get into the lore: apparently Sombra stumbled upon some kind of conspiracy, presumably the same one that was responsible for whatever the fuck happened to Overwatch itself. It can’t be Talon, since the article specifically identifies them as being different entities. So who is it? I guess we’ll just have to wait for future updates to find out. 

TRACER 

Literally just the same stuff as the animatic, in some cases word for word. 

BASTION 

Basically the same stuff, but we do get some nice worldbuilding about the Omnic Crisis, and about Omnics in general. Yeah, definitely getting Iron Giant vibes from Bastion here. 

HANZO 

Yeah, this is just the “Dragons” short. From here on out I’m not going to comment on a page too much unless it has something new. 

JUNKRAT 

Alright, now here’s the something new I was talking about. So apparently in the future Australia has been rendered even less habitable than it currently is, due to an attack on something called an “omnium”. I’m gonna look up what the fuck THAT is once I’m done here. And apparently Junkrat found some sort of secret in the ruins of said omnium, but no one has any idea what it is. Intriguing. That’s something I’m gonna have to look into as well. Also, Junkrat’s face reminds me of someone, but I can’t for the life of me think who. 

MEI 

Another character I have literally no context for. And if you’ll forgive the unspeakably shitty pun, she has a pretty cool backstory! So apparently she was an environmentalist working with Overwatch to figure out how specifically we were fucking over the planet this time, but an avalanche caused her and her team to get cut off; so she basically Futurama’d herself in order to survive until rescue came. This again feels like something that’s getting built up to in coming updates; all these unknowns excite my inner theorist. 

TORBJÖRN 

So this guy seems to have created most of the weapons for the original Overwatch agents. I guess he really is a futuristic dwarven smith. And of course no one listened to him when he was talking about robots trying to take over the world, and then the bad things happened. Not too much backstory on this one, but I want to hear more about him tracking down his old weapons; that sounds like a killer story. 

WIDOWMAKER 

I’M NOT CRYING, YOU’RE CRYING 

D.VA 

Okay, so she’s a gamer, I guess. That’s always cool. As for the backstory proper, it’s like Pacific Rim, only somehow even more ominous: some kind of giant robot thing appeared near South Korea, no one knows where the fuck it came from, and apparently the entire country’s military and an army of giant mechs can’t kill it faster than it can adapt. Also, that last sentence indicating that she is now livestreaming her military battles might be the single most amazing thing I’ve yet come across in this series. 

ORISA 

Basically the same thing as the animatic. More cryptic references to Doomfist. I want to know who the fuck Doomfist is. Get on that, Blizzard. 

REINHARDT 

Well, I like that he’s a knight. In terms of backstory there’s not too much new stuff here, but I have to say, I kind of like the guy so far. I hope he gets some spotlight later on. 

ROADHOG 

So this is basically a prequel to Junkrat’s entry. I guess an “omnium” is an area that’s controlled by the Omnics, or else some kind of facility for robots? I’ll look it up later. As for this guy, I have to admit it’s a pretty sad story. I feel for the guy. 

WINSTON 

A lot of stuff I already suspected, but it’s nice to have it confirmed. Also, this backstory was even more full of feels than I was expecting. I love the idea that genetically enhanced gorillas are just a thing that everyone accepts exists in the future. 

ZARYA 

So she was an Olympic athlete who spent most of her life training to compete, but at the last second ended up having to change course and fight robots. Also, yeah, an omnium is definitely some kind of base for robots. 

ANA 

The last of the three post-release characters (so far; come on, Blizzard, where’s that Doomfist ARG?). Basically the same as the animatic. 

LÚCIO 

Another character I know nothing about, other than the fact that Hobbes keeps calling his weapon a “bass cannon”. As for the backstory...eh, it’s not much I haven’t seen in a crapload of other stories. Cool character design, though. 

MERCY 

Ah, so she’s the one who rebuilt Genji! Wow, nearly at the end and that whole thing comes full circle. Anyway, I like her character; she’s basically the world’s most badass pacifist. The backstory is pretty cool too; again, not too much I haven’t seen elsewhere, but it’s still interesting. 

SYMMETRA 

“Symmetra literally bends reality.” Well, that’s certainly one way to keep the reader on their toes. 

Yeah, this one is pretty cool. Absolutely cringe-worthy dialogue aside (seriously, “architechs”? “Utopaea”? I was having a hard enough time buying “Symmetra”), I am curious about who’s side she’ll ultimately end up being on. It’s interesting that one of the most powerful characters so far is one who isn’t with Overwatch or explicitly fighting it. 

ZENYATTA 

And here we are, the one I’ve been waiting for: Robo-Monk. I actually read the abilities on this one because I was so confused by them in the trailer. As for the backstory, it’s pretty damn cool! I have to say, I really like the whole thing with robots finding religion; that’s one of my favorite sci-fi tropes, seeing how aspects of our culture would be interpreted and adapted for a completely different form of life. And again, we get some more hints about future events. 

And with that, I have caught up. I am now familiar with the characters and the lore. Of course, I’m not finished; there are still the comics (which I'll check out on my own some time), and of course there is the game itself (which I might get at some point if I can figure out how the hell to run it on a Duel Disk). And of course, there will probably be other videos in the future, which I will of course react to. But for now, at least, I can finally put this series to rest. This is Calvin, signing off.
