TEEN WOLF BRAINROT

so, i've been rewatching teen wolf bc apparently netflix hates us europeans and it will be removed on may 31st and here are a few of my opinions TM

scott is actually a very good main character. listen, i got into this fandom when i was older, so i probably don't understand why there is this trend of hating scott, but he's a valid MC! he shows an example of positive masculinity that is honestly so refreshing to see in modern media: he's kind, compassionate, always optimistic but not stupidly so, has an amazing relationship with his mum AND his friends, he's not afraid to show emotions and cry. honestly a very healthy, albeit traumatised, young man. yes, he did stupid stuff for the girl he liked, and yes he misjudged a few situations, but please, remind me, how old is he supposed to be? 16? 17? 18? yeah. i did worse things at his age.

scott and stiles come from working class families!!! they have money problems!! it's honestly so refreshing to see teenagers discuss money in a supernatural/fantasy tv show. it doesn't usually happens and I've found it refreshing because it's something that usually happen between irl teenagers.

i don't get sterek. really, really don't. maybe it's bc i've watched the show through a gen z lens (meaning the media and the culture (read: THE INTERNET) when i watched the show were influenced more by gen z than millennials' values) but i really don't get it. and the age difference makes me uncomfortable. (same thing with parrish and lydia, SHE'S A MINOR DUDE, there's a reason people don't like cops istg) SOMEONE EXPLAIN STEREK TO ME PLEASE

in fics stiles and scott's personalities are often swapped: stiles is the caring one, the pack mum, scott is the one with homicidal tendencies. like, my dudes, the fact that scott is a GOOD person through and through is the reason he's a true alpha. also the reason we, as viewers, like stiles is bc he's sarcastic and more morally ambiguous than scott (not really, but you get it, he cares more about himself and his immediate friends, the others can die, scott instead want to save everyone period), it's like taking away the thing that makes stiles stiles

malia and stiles were SO cute, i didn't expect to like them so much, but when they broke up my heart shattered

stydia is everything i want in a ship and i will not accept any criticism on it, it's literally one of the only straight ships i like. you have the slowburn, the malewife x girlboss trope, the he fell first but she fell harder, the mutual pining. it literally checks all of my boxes

isaac was such a cool character and he and scott had an amazing dynamic, like come on, they had something going on between them

kira is a badass. that's it, that's the comment. i like her so much

derek's development is one of the best. i couldn't stand him in season 1, but in s4 he became one of my favourite characters. but i think this has more to do with the fact that they aged him up? he was supposed to be in his early 20s in s1, but then they aged him up in s3? well, anyway, i liked how he literally wised up, stepping into the role of a teacher and guide instead of a leader, it suits him so much better (and i'm sure it's less stressful)

peter is such a charmingly evil bastard. i hate him, but i love him at the same time.

thiam is the best ship in the show, i don't care if it's canon or not. i've read airplanes, it's canon to me

Blessed post where you detail the storytelling points proving Derek's very young age both when the fire happened and during the show. And it's during the show too, because we may have been watching for six years but the story actually spans about two if I'm not mistaken?

The college-age-Derek-when-the-fire-happened truthers have been around forever and my favorite line from them is: "Why do you want so badly Derek/Kate to have been statutory rape? Just so your fave can claim more suffering?"

And it's not untrue that we like to see our faves suffer because it makes for compelling storytelling. The jokes and memes about the hurt-comfort are true. But this isn't that? No one ever walked up to J*ff D*vis and asked him to write up the story in a way that keeps supporting a timeline where Derek was 16 when the fire happened. He did that all by himself and it's not on us that we went along with it and didn't just discount the actual storytelling for retconning claims D*vis made in some interview or panel or other.

And more importantly, why are these people so passionately for this retconning? That's the real question. Why do they want so badly for Derek to have been 19 or 20 or even 22 (which would be beyond a stretch no matter how you retconned it) when the fire happened? Why is it so much more palatable to them  -better yet, why do they think it would be so much more palatable, so much less the suffering for Derek if he'd been college-age? Is it maybe a secret third idea that it's not even rape if he's a legal adult? That being underage is the only thing that made Derek/Kate not actually consensual? That made it rape?

The funny thing is that Derek is not even my favorite. I do like him but I also happen to like Allison and Scott just as much. And it's Stiles that happens to be my favorite, and I am very much in love with Sterek, but I liked both Derek and Jennifer (however complicated the ship ended up being) and I liked him with Braeden especially because she was the first canon love interest (Paige aside) he got that was actually a good match for him, that genuinely cared for him and didn't hurt him. The point is that Derek doesn't have to be your favorite to call out what Kate did to him as what it actually was, and it doesn't make you sexist either (I've seen the argument, they're really that stupid).

Obligatory addition that Sterek is fanon at the end of the day. So is any other ship involving adult Derek and a teenage character. So @ Derek haters (there's a Venn diagram that shows the impressive overlap between Derek haters and the above-mentioned truthers) who love accusing Derek of being what Kate actually was: canonically Derek had Paige when they were both 16, then he was 16 or even 22 and Kate is established older than Derek (which is what makes 22-year-old Derek impossible when the fire happened because Kate was 22 according to the chem teacher whose name I forget and who told her how to burn the Hales down), then he's an adult and he has Jennifer (who is a high school English teacher and that speaks for itself) and then he has Braeden (who was, like, a marshall or something years ago, before losing her job obsessing over hunting down Malia's mother or something, and I'm pretty sure that also speaks for itself on the question of Braeden's possible minimum age). Even that scene with Erica in season 2, poorly executed as it was, had Derek literally throwing off of him the only teenager that made a move on him (what Erica was actually going for is not the point here at all).

I haven't touched the show in years and I didn't watch the movie either, so correct me if I'm wrong about any of this. But anyway, thanks for reading my rant. It's defending Derek o'clock apparently because there's just some things in this fandom that can really grate your cheese.

yeah i do not know where people got the idea of derek being much older. in the presentation pilot script derek is specifically said to be 19 but they realized that if the fire was 6 years previous than he would've been 13 when he was involved with kate so they aged him a few years so he'd be 16.

of course that still isn't super great but jeff clearly had a specific story in mind for what happened with derek and how the fire occurred. picking up on those storytelling cues isn't us wishing bad things upon a character and it doesn't make me or anyone else a bad person. it's us engaging with the story and understanding what the creator is trying to convey to their audience without it being explicitly said.

and while it's conjecture that kate was a substitute teacher because it was never confirmed in canon i think there's evidence to support the idea between the on fire novel and how in season 2 the the argents infiltrate the school system. her being a substitute would explain not only how she was able to gain such access to derek but also how she knew to approach harris and how to approach him to get the information she wanted.

when i was watching the show while it was still running from 2012-2014 it was pretty accepted fandom wide that derek was very early 20s and had been 16 when the fire happened. it has only been since i returned in 2023 that i've seen an uptick in the idea that derek wasn't underage when he and kate were involved.

peter and cora's comments in visionary about age were tongue in cheek. it was show winking at the fans about how they were shit with character ages and timelines. and even then despite how messy the teen wolf timeline is we can be reasonably certain of a lot of events within canon and suss out ages and such.

derek wasn't in his 30s during the show. he wasn't even over 25. he was barely in his 20s. scott and stiles treat him like a peer because he is one. the idea of him being some much older guy needs to be put to rest.

i didn't go into detail with kate's behavior in that post because it was about whether or not derek graduated beacon hills high but like kate is a sexual predator. the narrative is very consistent with her behavior.

she makes several suggestive comments about both jackson and scott. in the tell when she's tormenting derek at the hale house she says:

"this one grew up in all the right places. I don't know whether to kill it or lick it."

that is not ambiguous. i've discussed kate and derek before here and here.

her behavior towards de-aged derek isn't ambiguous either.

kate argent is a sexual predator that likes teenage boys. she groomed and raped teenage derek all the while planning to murder his family. this doesn't get any better if derek had been older and was in a consentual relationship with kate.

there's a very consistent story throughout the entire show of derek's consent and body being violated by others for their own gain. kate, gerard, deaton and scott, the twins and kali, jennifer and even the nogitsune.

and yet antis like to turn that all around on derek which i've discussed here about how derek isn't a perfect abuse victim and how it's been used against derek here.

when people deny what happened to derek it's with the same reasonings that people deny men can experience sexual assault and rape. like, how many times has a female teacher engaged in sexual misconduct with a male student only for the comments to be that he should've been grateful and enjoy an older woman's attention? look at the way the news coverage of mary kay letourneau was handled.

Personally, if they had the time, they could've grown to have a very close familial bond (like siblings) but similar to Scott, that's all I can see them as. My villain origin story is that there’s legitimate issues with the teen wolf’s movie’s writing (apart from a race issue by the movie revolving around Japanese lore and no Japanese character) yet everyone shuts it down by saying “you are just a stiles fanboy shut up” (which btw i think someone purposely misgendered me???? But idc) or “the writing of the show was never top tier anyways” bc like

1) idc for dylan that much tbh???? Of course i wanted stiles but the movie could have been fine without him. He is however still a core character. They fucked up all his dynamics and it felt more like a punishment to his character for dylan not coming back rather than good writing. Because why did scott, his brother, the MAIN relationship of this show, never even addressed him????? Why are we expected to believe he let lydia go even tho she still loves him?????? How does he not know derek and his child when his dad still lives there, he just never visits his dad????? Thats fucking ridiculous ???? They could have just said lydia told him to focus on work and not come back in order to avoid getting his possessed again and not relive his biggest trauma. And that would have been good enough??? And have eli know him because is such bs that stiles doesn’t visit his father???? And have scott simply saying “i just talked to stiles on the phone. Told him we were good. Didn’t want to worry him” like BARE MIN THEY DIDNT NEED DYLAN THERE. But fucking up ALL his dynamics and relationships when he is a core character in order also kinda fucks up all the other characters and is BS???

2) the og show was never top tier writing, but if the potential was always at a 50% then the movie has to have that or more. Not less. And it gave less. It was a mess so obviously ppl will have critics of it regardless of Dylan’s character being there or not.

3) character wise no one benefitted from this movie except scott and allison, and not even because scott WHO IS THE MAIN CHARACTER barely touched on any other dynamic that wasn’t allison. Which is ridiculous.

4) whole thing is on Japanese lore on a character that ON THE SHOW comes from a concentration camp and created by kira’s mom, yet kira is never mentioned, and there’s absolutely no Japanese character or kitsune being relevant to the story. Which is bs??? Like Liam’s gf is there for 2 seconds and not relevant whatsoever.

5) which brings me to, liam and mason??? Why are they there??? Both of them and liam’s gf are literally so irrelevant???? They are just there to say they brought them back????????? Which is a shame bc so much could have been done???????

6) malia is literally stuck in life and that wasn’t even a plot????? She wears the exact same outfits from high school and in a relationship with a grown man who has known her since she was a minor and he wasn’t (side eye) and her character never goes through any sort of arc to realize she wants more???????????? Her character was already done dirty in s6 and this even more????? Girl came to the world in s3 after being stuck as an animal and never grew out of HS and thats!??? Never addressed??????

7) derek’s arc was shit??? All he did pass down his family trauma (seeing them burn) to his son. And why is eli’s happy ending that he got adopted by scott and allison??? WHERE IS HIS MOTHER??? HIS AUNT CORA????? Allison just came back to the world she should barely get in a relationship when mentally she doesn’t know life outside of HER JUNIOR YEAR OF HS. LET ALONE BE MOTHER TO A HIGH SCHOOLER????!!!?????

I could literally keep going????? It feels like character wise this movie was a set back and a fuck up of all characters and all dynamics rather than something to push the story forward. So yes. It was AWFUL writing. Regardless if Dylan was there or not. They could have done amazing without dylan still but they didn’t. They focused more only of the allison x scott ship and punishing dylan by fucking up his character.

All that said the acting (of most) is still really good!! So it makes sense some people enjoyed it. There’s angst, fave nostalgic characters coming back, and good chemistry/acting between them. But for people (like me) that wanted something for the characters it wasn’t good. Its stupid to try shutting down valid criticism by saying “you are just a dylan fanboy” because that also implies ignoring the whole issue with kira and racism too.

Reminds me of a post i saw here saying “the teen wolf fandom kinda deserved better but they have also always been super racist so maybe they don’t” the day the movie came out and shdjjdjd sad bc i want better but is kinda true😭 y’all either completely ignoring the real life issue with arden and the show taking japan culture while simultaneously fucking up their asian characters to benefit the white ones, or completely ignore the real issues with writing and say “fuck scott” to put stiles in a pedestal when in reality lil brown scott is as essential to the franchise as stiles. BOTH are the core of the show. And you can keep the core without the actor by at least addressing him, not trying to push him out like the movie intended. TEEN WOLF SPOILERS !

jeff davis truly has got to be the most spiteful person out there to make this movie. teen wolf was my absolute favorite show as a teen. i remember being obsessed with it for like three years, at least. i’m glad i’m seeing all the fans of the show hate on the movie because it’s what it deserves.

the fact that jeff davis refuses to acknowledge that scott mccall was never the star of the show is plain stupid. stiles was the star from the pilot to the final episode. he embodied the show, gave it life. to this day, he’s still one of my favorite fictional characters of all time. the show would have been nothing without stiles. void stiles was one of the biggest highlights of the show (as it should). dylan o’brien shined every second on the screen in his role.

what’s even more wild to me is that stiles and lydia, one of if not the most popular pairing from the show, got broken up over something so incredibly stupid and irrelevant that it makes me question if i was even watching the teen wolf movie. stiles and lydia who had a six-season slowburn and were the fan-favorite ship from the very first season (at least that’s how it felt to me) and it got ruined just like that. i just don’t get it. like it was so unnecessary that it’s just funny to me.

and then there’s the also very unnecessary death of derek hale. my beloved. derek who probably went through the most in the show (if i remember correctly anyway, i haven’t watched it in a couple years). like this man had to kill his first love, his family died in a fire, he was sa’d by kate, and now they let him burn to death in front of his son??? respectfully, what???? that is beyond fucked up. i only liked the moment where he spoke about stiles’s jeep. i’m not really a sterek shipper myself but i do get why fans like them.

also the weird thing is — for the longest time i was bummed that i didn’t get my scallison endgame, and now that i did get it, i just… i don’t know. it’s not the same? it certainly wasn’t necessary for me anymore. her death was sad as fuck but to be honest i didn’t need her back.

can’t believe i’m only realizing it now, but i’ve grown to prefer kira over allison. allison used to be my favorite girl on the show for some reason but she definitely isn’t anymore. and the fact that arden cho was offered half of what the white actresses would be receiving for the movie?? what the fuck??? that’s ridiculous. i’m glad she turned the offer down because she deserves better than to be involved in this shitshow anyways. can’t believe all the other actors went through with the film while being aware of that. most of them are jobless anyways sooo

i feel like the movie could have worked if everyone had returned with a solid storyline (honestly everything would have been better than this, the majority of fanfic writers could come up with a better script than this). and when i say everyone i mean everyone. stiles, kira, isaac, you name them. but in all honesty? we didn’t need a movie. even though i feel like the show didn’t end on a high note (season 6 was shit if you ask me) i thought the ending was fine.

the show itself wasn’t fantastic writing or acting (it definitely felt better at the time but i was younger so yk) but its storylines were enjoyable enough, i liked the script and most of the characters and their dynamics were fun. it was a different time with all the supernatural-ish shows and stuff and whatever but i did love it for a long time. it’s sad to know they went in this direction with the movie but my expectations were very low anyways so i kind of saw it coming. i’m gonna attempt a rewatch of the show soon to see whether it was as i remembered it.

i said it in the tags of my other post but st*rek is about stiles SO much more than it is derek and that's why they don't care about the age gap. it's not seen as a personal well compatible ship for derek but it's seen as a hot older strong guy who defends stiles against everything and everyone (untrue) while stiles gets to be the badass 'spark' (kill me).

i genuinely think there are so few people who favor derek over stiles that ship them together.

like let's be real about it. hardcore stiles stans (not all) see almost every character as an accessory to stiles and derek is no different. you do not give a damn about him being in character as long as stiles has him as some sort of trophy.

that's why so much of the st*rek narrative is made up and has derek like. COMPLETELY treating stiles drastically different than he does in canon

(also why tags are scott mccall is a bad friend/alpha are called for. they completely alter scott and derek's bond to make room for stiles and derek instead, AND why pack mom stiles is a thing. they make honestly both stiles and derek out of character with this one, but also isaac erica and boyd, only ONE of which shows any sign of liking stiles at all enough to listen to him, and why they have scott join derek's pack instead of being an alpha, etc)

the derek hale deserves nice things tag is filled with st/erek and pack mom stiles with the three betas as if derek didn't end the show with a girlfriend he loves, a good relationship with his alpha, the ability to shift into a full wolf, and is apart of a pack that would always be there for him. as if two of those three betas didn't die and the other one didn't defect right before derek himself did and accepted scott as his alpha. as if stiles and derek could stand to be in leadership with each other without scott there.

for titans, I don't hate hank and dawn both as characters themselves and as a ship (well I mainly shipped them in their flashback episode). people hate them because they took too much screen time but like, I actually enjoyed them. like yeah, hank was an asshole most of the time but I liked him, he was funny and he deserved better. and for dawn, I hate how people bash her because she was with dick (dickkory is my otp but dawn is also one of my favorite characters) and saying how that she should've died like I don't get it, I love her and all of you haters can suck it. all the women in titans are amazing and i hate how people like to pin them against each other over ship wars or whose more powerful like fuck off

for daisy jones & the six, i don't know if this is an unpopular opinion but I really don't like daisybilly together tbh. they just never grabbed my attention, also i hate billy and i think both daisy and camila deserve better than him.

for yellowjackets, i don't hate travis, he was an asshole I can admit that but.... I just don't think he's as bad as everyone makes him out to be. some of the men on this show have done worse than travis in my opinion (side eyeing officer groomer in the present timeline) and probably prior to season 2 I would've said callie as well but more people are liking her now, and I really like that so much she deserves the love <3

for euphoria, cassie does deserve some of the criticism she gets but some hate and stuff people say about it just rubs me in the wrong way. and I dislike how people not acknowledge her trauma because they favor maddy and lexi, and I do like maddy and lexi more as characters but I still love cassie and i really think that she can be a better person if people tried to pull her away from nate than just push her into his arms and she becomes progressively worse. also, there is a difference between an explanation and an excuse, what cassie had did in season 2 is inexcusable but we have to understand why she did what she did then than just wish death upon a teenage girl for making really, really horrible decisions and bash her more than the actual abuser. also someone get this girl therapy for god's sake

and finally for teen wolf, i know stiles is shipped with like soooooo many characters in the show but I truly and genuinely only ship him with like 3 people (scott, cora & malia). I never fully understood the hype around st*rek, I hate st*dia, and any other ships I just don't pay a lot of attention too anyways. and also speaking of stiles, I do like him and I can relate to him at points, but I just don't think he's the best character of the show. I'm not saying he isn't a great character, he is but it's just me having a preference for other characters who don't get that much love as he does

- “that’s La’an’s ship” is such an interesting way to put it when Kirk is the captain LOL (yes, I know they didn’t want to reveal the captain)

- no, I still hate how Sam talks about Jim because what’s said is what people will remember and the way he described Jim is just not true and very pop-culture-y. “He bends rules all the time” no he doesn’t, and it’s especially wild when it’s used in a reimagining of Balance of Terror. So my initial “I guess Sam doesn’t know his brother” still tracks, because he also only knows what Kirk wants him to see. He doesn’t know about his struggles, his doubts, how seriously he takes all of his decisions... “Bones, what if I’m wrong?”*

- I really dislike they made Ortegas take Stiles’ role. Unless they show something in s2 that would explain her behaviour, it’s just so ??? (maybe they tried to hint at it with her “blue meanie” thing with Hemmer during the funeral?) Or like if they just showed some animosity between Ortegas and Spock in previous episodes...

- they should have used Sarek’s actor for the commander. They should have gone all out.

* I know they used Sam’s words to put some doubts in Pike’s mind about Kirk, but it’s like - this brash, young captain. Is he the reason a war starts? - when Kirk is so far from being brash in his dealing with Pike. In some way, he’s way more collected than Pike, coming up with better options. (I really did not appreciate this episode the right way the first, and even the second time, because of Sam’s words. 

- attack pattern Tiberius four is sooo stupid. 

- “All this because of a second’s delay?” Well, of course. Kirk’s reminded of his failure, of his hesitation, on the Farragut every single day. And now, because someone else hesitated he lost the ship, and probably a lot of his crew as well. Love the acknowledgement. 

- “I’m an engineer, not a miracle worker.” .............. not a fan. I also really dislike that the episode after Hemmer’s death has Scotty’s voice. You don’t have to try so hard to milk the nostalgia, especially since it’s McCoy’s line... I guess there’s not much hope for s2 to be less about nostalgia when Kirk’s around, is there? I mean, I like when the lines from the show are used, but I also need them to be used by the characters or is some kind of a reverse - it would be fine if Scotty said this line to McCoy, for example. It would be fine if McCoy existed and it was an inside joke between Scott and Spock because they both know McCoy. Like this, it’s just cheap as is Scotty’s presence. It was AU, he didn’t need to be there. 

- I kinda love that Pike and Kirk just met and they just immediately started to call each other “Jim” and “Chris” lol

- it’s funny how easily Spock is like “you’re important to me too”. He’s always so soft and open with Pike.

- I really do like this Kirk. I know I’m gonna see different Kirks in s2, but I like this one. (I don’t like how Sam introduced him though lol)

- but I really wonder what will Pike do differently to save Una and why didn’t it work out in the other future. If it literally happened a few moments after he sent the letters... will his journey to the future change something in his actions? I also wonder what will make the Farragut and the Enterprise cross paths before 2266. It’s not like they didn’t (because of La’an... but also did La’an never return to the Enterprise? Or did she go to Farragut after she was promoted to a Commander), but Kirk didn’t meet Spock in that timeline... 

like I just hope that some bits from the future will be reflected......... because it’s so weird putting La’an on Kirk’s ship and then not doing anything with it ever again

Unpopular opinions -teen wolf

Stiles is overrated. Don’t get me wrong, Stiles is a good character, he’s funny. But he’s not in my top 15. I’m not a big fan of Void either.

Honestly, I don’t like 3B that much. I prefer the seasons 4-6, and 3A.

Season 4 should have been two parts. It deserved more time to develop characters and the plot. I would have loved to see them do more with the Orphans. It’s also the best season.

My favorite villains were Theo(obviously), the Deadpool just as a whole, I liked the idea. And Jennifer.

Isaac, Brett, and Theo would have been friends. Brett and Theo as friends aren’t unpopular, but I haven’t seen Isaac included in the hc yet.

Season 5 should have been darker. More psychological horror.

Nolan is a little bean. He must be protected. Lol probably not a unpopular opinion. I just find him the most relatable character to me and I want to give him a hug.

I hc Theo as pansexual. Scott and Malia too.

Scira and Stalia are my favorite Scott and Stiles ships. I’m a big shipper of Thiam, if you can’t tell, but my second top Theo ship is Sceo. Theo had a crush on Scott when they were little for sure.

I have seen only one person headcanon this other than me so it’s getting added to the list. Cat dad Theo. Theo is such a cat person.

sterek: Ship It

What made you ship it? I'm pretty sure I knew going into the show that sterek was the big popular ship, so I was probably primed for it, but Stiles endeared himself to me within like 10 seconds of appearing on screen, and the sterek dynamic in season 1 was pretty blatant. Stiles being both obsessed with and intimidated by Derek, and Derek being "evil" but also the most tragic soft sad boy, lol.

What are your favorite things about the ship? I love a good brains/brawn dynamic, and they also play into that trope of being the only one to tolerate each other (Stiles's smartassery/scarcasm, Derek's growly anger and brooding), but beyond the very superficial level tropes, they also have a lot of traits in common, like Derek being surprisingly snarky and clever, and Stiles having that loyal, protective streak a mile wide that you'd usually see in werewolfy types.

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship? I'm kind of basic tbqh, I like most of the popular things... I guess one of my unpopular(?) opinions is that for as much as I love kinky fic, I have a hard time seeing Derek as dominant (and as submissive for that matter), so if I'm craving kink I usually get my fix with Stiles in other pairings instead. Domestic slow burn/future fic/non-supernatural AU is what I really really really go for with sterek, I think both of their issues (lol so much trauma between them) translate really well into all sorts of AUs so they're easy to slot into a lot of scenarios and explore deeply.

scott/jackson: Don’t Ship It

Why don’t you ship it? I just don't love either character very much; I go for the clever assholes, and both Scott and Jackson have the dumb jock vibe most of the time, so I don't seek out either of them. :\

What would have made you like it? I do enjoy some enemies to lovers tropes, and I think they could probably be great for exploring overcoming that childish dislike for someone when they get older, like maybe they meet as adults or something and they're like "wow, things are so different now", something like that.

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it? Most of my complaints about them are to do with the show canon, and Jackson especially I think could have been really interesting if they just... did more with him, or if the show was coherent and consistent about characterization in general lol, so really, fandom's where it's at, because I think there are a ton of ways to explore them well. I tend to like Jackson so much more in fic than in canon even as a side character, so thanks to the people who like him and write him well.

Charlie is introduced early in season 1 during one of her dad’s classes! She falls asleep during it and people start gossiping over how only she can get away with that.

Allison and Scott either together or separate. People love her friendship with Scott so much that it became a rather popular ship meanwhile Allison taught Charlie archery which led... to a lot of gifs.

In the beginning people loved her for her attitude and comedic timing, but eventually people grew to relate to her and the feeling of self-inflicted pressure she puts on herself.

Oh no Naila, you have opened the floodgates 😱

Posting under a cut so no poor unsuspecting soul has to read my unhinged essay. Also, spoilers inherent for Teen Wolf! (as if anyone in the year 2022 is trying to stay unspoiled for that 😂)

So Derek isn’t a character I’d hate on his own; much like my distaste for Cas, this arose out of fandom issues.

Derek in the show is…fine. He’s the stock mentor figure, but with a twist: he does no mentoring and helps very little. Instead of being kind and patient, he’s abrupt, harsh, often wrong, and obstructs our leads more than actually helping them.

On my first watchthrough, I just found him bland. Not my favorite character, not my most hated, just. He’s…there. K.

I know we can partly blame the writing for this—Jeff Davis wasn’t interested in Derek as a character, he just needed to wring as much werewolf lore (and Tyler Hoechlin abs) as possible out of him. But Hoechlin’s performance doesn’t help any. (Listen, I KNOW he’s actually a good actor. He’s doing great things right now. But on Teen Wolf? Absolutely not. I hate his deadpan delivery and monotone voice. I don’t care if it was a character choice, Hoechlin! Put some inflection into it!)

Basically, Derek is about as interesting to me as a stale cracker. (And I LIKE crackers, especially saltines!)

Then I got into fandom. And hoo boy, so many of us watched different shows. To them, Derek was the most interestingest, handsomest, tragicest, sexiest, characteriest character to ever character on Teen Wolf. He had so much personality, so much hidden depth, his performance was unparalleled, the writers did him so dirty, he’s also clearly closeted which gives him extra fandom points, etc etc.

(I call this Cas!syndrome. Elevation of a character/actor to near god-like status—not out of mere adoration of said character, but out of a need to obscure the 2012-white-boy-ship-frenzy by something resembling actual substance.)

I might as well bring up ships while I’m here—part of my dislike for Derek stems from sterek, my notp of Teen Wolf and lots of fans’ only reason for liking Derek at all.

The two of them are…painfully tryhard together. It was always very obvious after season 1 that they were only paired for fanservice scenes (because humor is Stiles saying something funny, and Derek either looking mad or hitting him for it! Or threatening to hit him, epic romance we have here)

(Let me also say I have no problems with anybody shipping pairings like this, go nuts with abuse, etc etc. It’s all fiction, you know the drill. But peak romance on a high school drama it is not)

This leads to another fatal flaw with Derek’s character. He doesn’t have anyone to bounce off of. He’s the loner.

Let’s be very honest here, Scoot McCool Scott McCall is quite a boring protagonist. No one is pretending he’s the greatest character alive. His writing is cliche, his development forced, his acting…well.

But I was still able to engage with him as a character because of his friendship with Stiles—they have genuine chemistry, their camaraderie is natural, and they feel like actual teen best friends. Just hanging out, being dumb. I was rarely bored by Scott, even if he’s not the most interesting character.

Derek doesn’t have anyone like that. The writers try several things out with him over the seasons—his love/hate relationship with Kate in season 1 was great! For all…two scenes of it. They tried putting him with Isaac and the other betas, but that basically consisted of him telling them plot exposition and being mean to them. Great way to endear us to him.

I seriously thought that’s why they brought back Peter—so they could bounce off each other being snarky. It worked great in the season 2 finale! But alas, after that they rarely used it.

They started pairing him with Chris Argent in the later seasons, which worked okay. But they’re both strong, stoic, serious types. And their history is…fraught, to say the least. Anyway, they both smile about five times in the show between them, and they’re not fun to watch together. (Probably because JR Bourne has the creepiest smile known to man)

Stiles has maybe one scene with Derek every three episodes? And while the two do have some chemistry, I find their scenes painful to watch, especially now. Any humor in them is replaced by 15x18-esque cringe. I know exactly why you paralyzed the two of them right on top of each other, Jeff. And it’s not even funny. Get out of here with your winking and nudging. I hate you.

So…yeah. It’s not like I have any real beef with him, I’m not going to make up reasons why his character was the worst, the secret villain of the series, or anything like that. He’s just a guy I didn’t have any interest in—but after hordes of fans shoving him in my face asking isn’t he the most specialest boy? You better clap for him or I’ll kill everyone in this room I’ve decided that he is the worst, actually, and he can choke.

That is an excellent question and I just want to thank you for giving me the chance to rant about Teen Wolf and stuff because it really gives me motivation to write!!

TW: Before I go on, I know the fandom can be sensitive about ships, so let me make it clear for anyone who comes across this, this is just MY opinion. This is not fact, this is not hate, this is just ships that I don't personally get and why I don't get them. If anyone wants to have a civil, rational discussion about any of this, you're free too. I am a flexible person, so I like to rationalise and understand my perspectives and other people's perspectives. I'm all for respecting others (unless of course, others are spreading hate or toxicity).

Teen Wolf Ships I Don't Get (Just My Opinion, Don't Hate Me)

Stiles Stilinski x Peter Hale

I kind of understand how people came to ship it. The two have great banter, witty moments and interactions, especially in Season 1 and Season 3a. Season 6a, they were stuck in the Ghost Rider's train station so that was bound to get everyone in love with the Forced Proximity trope hot under the collar. Not to mention Peter is hot.

Things that don't engage me about this ship:

Peter is old enough to be Stiles' dad.

Stiles is a teenager for a good portion of the show (16 - 18) and Peter is in his 40s.

Peter is Malia's father, who Stiles canonically dates.

Maybe if I saw more fics where Stiles was out of highschool before he was paired with an older man, than maybe I could enjoy it but I can't.

Another thing that I don't get is why Stiles is constantly positioned as a timid, damsel in distress to Peter's big bad wolf?

One of the things I love about Stiles as a character is that he might be in the most terrifying situation, but he's anything but timid. He'll verbally kick the ass of every single Teen Wolf big bad and that's like erased in fanon when he's suddenly next to a big bad wolf?

Additionally, the narrative that Peter is the rescuer to help empanicpate Stiles from his supposed abuser and villain, Scott, doesn't really make sense to me but that applies to almost every single Stiles x villain pairing so…

Scott McCall x Malia Tate

Look, their sexual chemistry was pretty good, all thing considering. It just that Scalia had no romantic build up. To me, when I was watching Teen Wolf, it came out of nowhere with no hints of anything between them prior to Season 6b.

There was not a strong relationship between them besides friendship and packmates before Season 6b. I guess you could count him being the one to turn her back to human in Season 3a as a form of connection, but to me this only meant that she became part of his pack.

Maybe if their relationship had grown from that moment in 3a instead of Stalia's (which didn't have so much as chemistry but a fantastic build up and plotline), then maybe I would be able to understand it and even enjoy it.

Honestly though, after Allison, Scott's best canonical relationship was with Kira, who matched him well in both personality, development and storyline. Ironically enough, my favourite Malia ship is also with Kira. I just love Kira, guys.

I think there are some ships that are better platonic, and I especially find Scott and Malia's relationship lacking in fics where they just come off as stoic co-leaders rather than actual romantic partners.

Jordan Parrish x Lydia Martin

I understand that from a narrative standpoint, their connection as Hellhound and Banshee would obviously leave them with some sort of tension and that would have probably engaged me if their human identities were completely different.

Specifically, if Parrish was not, say, 24, a grown man, and a police officer. Whereas, Lydia is, what, 17-18 Season 4-5a, but still a teenage girl in highschool.

The power imbalance between their human identities is just off-putting, and if there's one thing about me that you should know it's that I can't ship two characters who are not equals in someway or another. It's not as bad as Stiles and Peter, but any young girl getting into a relationship with a man in position of authority just isn't my cup of tea. If there's a huge disreprency in respect, age, trust, power or authority, than it just puts me off.

Maybe if their connection was approached differently from on the show? If anyone knows fics that could help me acclimate this ship, that would be great?
