Naruto has a multitude of characters where their writing is heavily based in queerness and queer experiences. From the devotion two characters have for one another to a point where they would trust each other with their lives, to feeling like the other one is the only person who truly to their core understands them and accepts them for who they are despite their flaws and issues they’ve done in the past.

Naruto as a series is so queer in its writing that the writer - whether intentional or not - made the main two characters always run after each other even if one of them fell into darkness, saying he’d shoulder the pain he’s holding just so he can be near him and you’re saying you think… Obito is gay?? The guy who literally lost his mind over a girl??

Edit: I’m talking about canon btw. Hc if you’d like I’ll always support that, but he’s not canonically gay or bi. His character is rooted in his love for a girl and the only reason he saved kk was to have time alone w Rin because he didn’t want him interfering. He’s in love w Rin and only Rin in canon🙇‍♂️

"well, the Uzumaki and Uchiha have around 25-ish members again, which would allow them to be reinstated as clans allied to the village by charter right," Tobirama stated, entirely unfazed by the eyes of the many clan heads watching him speak. Itama shifted his tiny (painfully tiny, was he always that small??) body in his hold, gripping on tighter to his mother's fur collar. both he, Kawarama, and Nawaki were heartbreakingly silent through the whole ordeal, even when the resurrection started by way of the lost Hatake boy, Orochimaru.

"but the Hatake and Senju still only have less than 10 and 15 members respectively, meaning that there would be a power imbalance between the four newly resuscitated clans. given the feud that is, arguably, still active to some of us revenant, it doesn't seem wise to leave it be."

and that was the crux of the matter. several members of both the Uchiha and Senju that had been resurrected had died when the Senju-Uchiha blood feud had been ongoing. both his brothers (his brothers!!) had died far before the village had even been a thought in Hashirama's wood cork of a brain, along with Madara's own siblings, like his older brother Hidehiko, Izuna, their younger brother Matsuri and his twin sister Shouko, and their youngest sister Choushi. thats not even mentioning the adult shinobi under the same circumstances; 22 year old Senju Yasuiro and 28 year old Senju Fuushinshi had attacked and injured Uchiha Kouga, and also injured the man's 12 year old niece Uchiha Rukia, before Tobirama, Madara, Hashirama, and Mito managed to tie them all down.

(if Fuushinshi was sporting a break in his arm, in the same place as young Rukia, well. That was between Tobirama and his cousin.)

"Thats not even mentioning the non-clan shinobi who were resurrected, who, in all likelihood, are probably related to one of the four clans in question. if they become affiliated with said clans is entirely by their own choice." he said, his tone brokering no room for argument. Tobirama was honestly surprised that he hadn't been interrupted yet, but it might be the shock of having so many once-dead shinobi in Konoha's meeting hall.

pursing his lips ever so slightly, he looked to Hashirama, holding Kawarama who was making faces at Itama, then to Touka who was standing behind Mito and holding Nawaki. his brother tilted his head and Touka nodded, flickering her chakra in code pattern for 'plan, question.'

Tobirama sighed, mostly as a visual sign of reluctance for the other clan heads present. 'contract, agreement. kill, home-clan; fade, wild-clan.'

Hashirama's eyes sparkled, his smile not fading from his face in the slightest.

"our agreed upon solution to both the power imbalance and the lacking size of the Senju and Hatake clans is to incite the charter's directory number fourteen."

only two of the clan heads seemed to recognize what he was referencing, tjose being the Nara clan head, as expected, and Madara, who literally co-wrote the damn thing with him. Madara threw his head back with thundering laughter, which Tobirama related to on a personal level.

it was extremely ironic that the ones to end the Senju way of life would be the very people who had been hurt by it the most.

Itama jerked in his arms at the noise, so he adjusted his grip to hold him tighter. several eyes landed on the still laughing Madara, who Tobirama knew was not going to explain anything. the Nara head didn't look any worse, so he either knew what the Senju used to be like, or he simply didn't care.

Tobirama had expected most of the clans to not have invested in that particular article after it was written, but... he was extremely unpleased with Hiruzen's puzzled, near silent question of "the what?"

Madara's laughter died off with the (to most) unexpected line of, "wonderful play, Senju." vicious smile almost mocking to anyone unfamiliar with him. which was everyone except him, Mito, Hashirama, and Izuna.

Tobirama simply inclined his head in acknowledgement. he ran one hand through his hair, carefully avoiding the carefully disguised braids he'd tied into it this morning with Hashirama, Touka, and Orocchi.

"to answer your question, Hiruzen, 'the what' is the clause in the village's Constitution that states, 'when a clan is no longer large enough to support itself and its members, an allied clan who is willing and able are to induct the clan into their own, allowing the continued survival of the bloodline. this can be enacted when a clan's number drops beneath the range of the clan's expected member count.'"

clearing his throat, he continues on, projecting his voice to call over the now disorganized shinobi.

"in essence, this means that the senju will join either the Uchiha, Uzumaki, or Hatake clans, as those three have priority over other clans in the village due to both personal and blood relations being closest. thus, to avoid further power imbalance in the number of members to each resurrected clan, the Senju will be hosted by the Hatake clan."

You know what would be funny?

So let's say with my Sakura reincarnation au elements with the Harunos able to see their past lives memories/ghosts. Shachi and Haruka have been around since Sakura was born.

Shachi and Haruka coo and gush over her. Sakura's their baby, and they'll make damn sure her life ends better than theirs' did. They know that eventually, when she gets put on a genin team, there's a high chance that if her team mates have past lives, she'll start seeing them too. It happens. The closer a Haruno gets to somebody, the more likely they know each other in a past life.

Then comes the day when team 7 was assigned. While waiting in that empty classroom, Shachi and Haruka notice Sakura fidgeting. She kept looking between her two teammates. Haruka remembers doing the same thing when she first saw the ghosts of Indra and Ashura. But it would be too early for Sakura to start seeing. . .

"OH HELL NO!" Six voices shouted. Four while looking at one another, and two looking at the other four.

Sakura flinched hard, thankful she was sitting behind the boys. While Haruka could be loud at times, Sakura has never heard Shachi raise her voice once. She has never heard such venom in either of their voices before. Except for that one time. . .wait a minute.

Searching back through her past lives' memories, she found the identities of the four ghostly men she could now see. Who all seemed so surprised she could see them. Yeah, Sakura doesn't blame Shachi and Haruka being upset. She would be pretty pissed too if she was suddenly reunited with her husband and best friend, who both also happened to be the reason she's dead.

Shachi and Haruka are outraged. THEY HAVE TO DEAL WITH THEM AGAIN!?

DEATH DO WE PART MOTHERFUCKER! WHY ARE YOU STILL HERE?!?!?! I DON'T GET PEACE IN DEATH EITHER?!?!

Poor Sakura has to pretend she doesn't see the six ghosts all yelling at one another. Has to pretend she doesn't have a front row seat to the ghostly drama. She wishes she could somehow give the sight to Naruto and Sasuke too so they can suffer with her.

Shachi and Haruka are also protective of Sakura. So, if any of the boys' past lives try to interact with her, it's the fastest way to get an angry pink lady on their case.

What would be even funnier if Sasuke and Naruto could interact with their past lives but only them. So they're seeing half the show. Sasuke only sees Indra and Madara cowering, muttering about angry wives. Meanwhile, Naruto only sees Ashura and Hashirama trying to placate someone, a sister?

Then poor Sakura just sees the whole thing of her past lives trying to beat the ass of Sasuke's past lives because they are still angry at them. Natuto's past lives are trying to calm the situation, but Sakura's past lives are still angry at them, too. Then Sasuke's past lives are yelling Naruto's past lives, and they start arguing, which just sets all on fire again.

Compressed timeline AU where the Hokages retire younger instead of mostly dying (Minato still kicks the bucket, sorry man, should have called Hashirama to deal with Kurama instead of trying to tackle it yourself) and you just have them wandering around the village when Naruto's growing up

Bonus points for Kakashi's mom being a Senju so he ends up adopted by Tobirama. Hashirama would have volunteered but he already has Tsunade and Yamato and Mito said they weren't taking any more.

Naruto was upset at first but later if Tobirama scolds Kakashi for reading Icha Icha when he's supposed to be teaching this 12 year old is 1000% ready to throw down with the Lord Second for being mildly disrespectful to Kakashi-sensei

Kakashi is mildly embarrassed. Tobirama is vaguely nonplussed. Kagami is laughing so hard he can't breathe.

Shisui still dies but Kagami finds out and grabs Itachi and he and Madara get a confession out of him and killing Danzou is the only thing Madara and Tobirama have ever agreed on. They hate it but Tobirama still tells Hashirama to shut up when Madara lights Danzou on fire. It goes a ways towards the younger Uchiha stopping calling him the White Demon of the Senju.

How would your infinite tsukuyomi dream end? when did it started and how to end it? let's not consider boruto as canon but go with the end of gaiden and do you have links for other analysis which talks about this possibility

I’ll be honest, it took me longer than I care to admit to realize what you were asking. I’m hoping I can still read and you’re asking how I’d ideally write the infinite tsukuyomi working off of Gaiden and ignoring the Boruto anime/manga.

Assuming that’s what you’re asking, I have a couple of ideas:

First the Rules

Everyone was put under the genjutsu by Madara at the same time. (It doesn’t make any sense that the susanoo would block it out.)

The reason we saw team 7 fight Madara and Kaguya afterword, is because the genjutsu is designed to basically gaslight you into thinking that it’s reality. It tells you everything was just a bad dream or quickly brings whatever was bothering you to a conclusion.

The infinite tsukuyomi works on two principles: It can only reflect back whatever is in the victim’s mind, so it can’t create someone/something the victim can’t conceive of (ex. can’t create “true peace” in the mind of someone used to conflict, can’t create a world with dead people alive in the mind of someone who can no longer imagine the world with them in it). The dream continues on a linear path unless distress or suspicion is detected, in which case it will only change to relieve those feelings.

The dreams aren’t perfect. They’re based on what the person wanted at the time of it being cast and will make as few changes as possible (think of it like a computer made to find the most efficient way to keep everyone happy. it’s the ai art of dreams, except with less art theft). On top of that, it can’t recognize complicated emotions. So bittersweetness, reluctant contentment, dissatisfaction, anxiety, disappointment, etc. aren’t considered “distress” and won’t cause the dream to change.

Dreams aren’t identical with each other and dreams aren’t mixed like in Road to Ninja, but some people are able to affect the dreams to some degree.

Different people have different levels of awareness when it comes to whether or not they know they’re dreaming. Generally, the better someone is at genjutsu/spotting discrepancies in their chakra, the more likely they are to notice.

Now, What I’d Do With This

The status of everyone at the beginning:

At least a year has passed since everyone went under the genjutsu, but the Rookie 9 aren’t in their thirties like they are in Gaiden. I’m thinking they’re in their early-mind twenties.

Kurama didn’t break Naruto out because Kurama is under a dream of his own (they do have separate consciousnesses after all). Naruto is in blissful ignorance in a dream about being Hokage, Sasuke being in the village, the world having rebuilt itself and being a peace, him having kept his promises, etc. It would probably look very similar to the Boruto world. Kurama would probably be trapped in a dream about Naruto being happy and him and the other tailed beasts being free.

Sasuke took a while but he figured out he was under the genjutsu, probably because he isn’t used to things coming so easily to him. His dream, given when the genjutsu was cast, would have him acting as Hokage fighting for world peace and security. Despite this, he’s neglecting his “duties” to instead search the world for a way out.

Sakura was aware pretty much from the start and is in denial (Denial is a river in Egypt, Sakura! This is a dream!). Regardless of what her dream is, everything would be tinged with guilt. With the nagging question of whether she’s doing the right thing. She’s meant to be a realistic character and I think it’s very realistic to prefer fantasy over reality. Just think of all the people who use escapism (via books, movies, tv shows, video games, sleeping, etc) as a coping mechanism.

The rest of team 7 is blissfully ignorant all throughout because it either wouldn’t make sense for them to be aware or their role would be redundant. Same goes for every other character except its because their character is passable as they are or the ship has sailed and them suddenly becoming relevant at the end would be more confusing than satisfying.

One the outside, the four Hokage are still trying to break everyone out of the genjutsu while Madara is bored, watching them try and fail repeatedly. At first I can imagine them fighting each other (verbally and physically), but at this point they’ve all realized there’s no point. The Hokage are the only thing keeping Madara even marginally entertained/sane and fighting Madara only wasted the Hokage’s time. At most, they throw jabs at each other.

The Plot:

This would be very Naruto-Sasuke-Sakura centric with cut aways to the few people on the outside.

Naruto and Kurama would find out about the dream because their chakra networks are still linked so whenever they try to tap into the other’s chakra, they see glimpses of the other one’s dream.

Black Zetsu would either be an obstacle within the dreams or be reabsorbed into Madara because he isn’t really needed.

Naruto would have an arc choosing reality and choosing real people. Since he had spent much longer than Sasuke or Sakura fully believing that the dream was real, he got much more connected to the fakes inside of it (both real people that he didn’t get to interact with much in the real world and fake people his imagination/dream conjured). I think he would know very early into becoming aware that he wanted reality, so most of his arc would be him teaching/forcing himself to say goodbye. (Demon Slayer spoilers: picture the scene of Tanjiro leaving his family from the Mugen Train arc)

Sasuke would have an arc about what you want not necessarily being what you need. I think instead of him continuing with his revolution/world peace goals, he would return to his roots and instead focus on finding peace. Maybe some spreading awareness stuff, but most of his arc would have him choosing to instead focus on what he still has, maintaining what he has, and restoring whatever he can of his clan (its honor, its culture, its place in the village, etc).

Sakura would have an arc about self-acceptance. I interpret her as carrying around a lot of shame and self-blame, so I imagine her keeping herself in the genjutsu because she’s ashamed of who she is in the real world. This would have her moving forward with the newfound awareness that there’s no shame in being who you are and it’s never too late to do better.

Because I’m biased and I think it’s fitting for a story about understanding others to end with the day being saved because of understanding, I’m giving Madara a redemption arc. So, Madara would be going through team 7’s character arcs all at once. He learns to choose the real world with all its flaws over a fake utopia, he learns that finally grieving and coming to peace with all that he’s lost is what he really needs over the world peace he was chasing, and he learns to stop blaming himself for the deaths of his brother/s. His story would be full of the Hokage and him talking about why they wanted peace, their dreams to become Hokage or bring change, their experiences in war, what they’ve lost, etc. and him slowly deciding to help them free everyone.

The End:

Team 7 gets into contact with the outside somehow. Maybe one half of Kurama communicates with the other half. Maybe Madara can tweak the genjutsu but can’t break it (because that would be too easy). Maybe Tobirama makes a jutsu. Maybe Hashirama, Minato, or Naruto use sage mode to interact with the tree holding everyone. Maybe Sakura finally uses that talent for genjutsu that’s been being hyped up for the entire manga. Whichever you think makes the most sense.

So team 7 and the Hokage + Madara come up with a plan to draw a huge amplification seal around the god tree’s trunk and using that seal plus a bunch of chakra to pretty much perform the biggest genjutsu release ever. It’s not enough to break everyone out at once but it is enough to get Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura out and send a shockwave through the rest of the tree. Everyone notices that shockwave and gets suspicious. So the infinite tsukuyomi starts stretching its chakra thin trying to cover it all up. Because it’s stretched so thin (it is covering everyone on the planet), the genjutsu is weak enough to break. Some ninja, especially those good at genjutsu, start breaking themselves out. For everyone else, team 7 + Hokage + Madara is doing a race against the clock to release everyone they possible can before the infinite tsukuyomi stabilizes itself.

From here, the Hokage + Madara would either leave after everyone’s been released or after the world has gotten back on its feet after the war. I’m leaning towards the latter for two reasons: 1. Along with the symbolism of the old generations passing the torch, there would be the symbolism of generations working together for a better future. 2. Madara could pass what he knows of the Uchiha clan onto Sasuke since Sasuke would’ve been too young to remember most of his culture.

I don’t think Madara should stick around any longer than the Hokage (y’know, leaving the world in the next gen’s hands), so he’d have to die somehow even if it would be a pretty dark end. I’m thinking seppuku style.

Did I just answer an ask by basically plotting a fanfiction? Yes. This wasn’t supposed to happen, but I apparently had a lot more than “a couple of ideas”.

Crack au idea: To stop Madara from achieving his goals in the midst of the 4th great ninja war, somehow someone manages to resurrect his mother (via channeling her spirit or edo tensei I'm leaving it for the massses to decide). Not only does she stop Madara she reprimands everyone who played a role in this nonsense. Everyone stops fighting because everyone is scared/in awe of her abilities.

The Weight of the World

The story Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura weave is entirely unbelievable. They don’t offer names or timeframes, don’t toss about accusations, but their meaning is clear regardless. Clear and impossible. They don’t say it outright but they don’t need to. Time travel is distinctive enough on it’s own. It also doesn’t exist. To manipulate time to that degree would be hubris. Even the Hiraishin teeters on the edge of the natural and unnatural worlds. It’s near instant transportation, after all, and that requires the user to dabble in time itself.

What the three before him are implying, however, is that they pulled themselves back through time before their own births. They would have nothing to tie themselves to this time and so they shouldn’t have been able to time travel. Sakura catches his gaze and he can tell she’s serious in her claims, just as her teammates are with theirs. She tilts her head into the slightest nod.

"We didn’t make the seal on our own," she says and her quiet voice cuts through the argument most of the rest of the room has dissolved into like a hot knife through butter. "I don’t think we could have. Naruto has a talent for fuuinjutsu like most of his family but he was never taught to create seals, to use that talent. Sasuke and I have skilled that lie in different areas." Tobirama’s lips twist and he itches to deny what the pink-haired medic is saying. What she’s going to say.

"How did you do it, then?" Izuna asks, slow and dangerous. He’s figured it out at well. Madara and Hashirama- they just look lost. They haven’t been watching the trio, though, not like Tobirama and Izuna have. They’ve been on the outskirts of this mess and now they’ve been drawn in only because their time traveling guests wanted them to. Sakura rocks back on her heels, humming low in her throat. Sasuke and Naruto seem content to let her have the lead.

"We found the basis for the seal. It was half-finished, made by a man who knew where it all went wrong and wanted it changed, fixed. The Nidaime never had the chance to finish or to use it but we stumbled across it and we were far more determined than our enemies gave us credit for. Far more desperate. The seal took too much chakra for even an Uzumaki Jinchuuriki to activate. Too much even for three chakra tanks. Luckily, there were five of us. A Hokage with nothing to preside over, a medic with no one to heal, a man who got his revenge and found himself all the worse for it. Our sensei, broken and jagged from a lifetime of betrayal and loosing those closest to him. A man who saw the ending his action wrought and realized that it wasn’t worth it. Nothing was worth that ending." Sakura shrugs delicately.

"We’re here to ask for help," Naruto says, quieter and more somber than Tobirama has ever seen him. "To save the world. To save Konoha."

"And how would we do that?" Madara asks suspiciously, as he should. The trio of impossibilities exchanges a long, darkly amused look.

"Prepare your strongest attacks?" Sasuke offers with a sharp grin, his one visible eye spinning into the mangyekou sharingan. Tobirama tenses, rolling forward on his toes so he could easily stop whatever attack is coming. The attack, of course, doesn’t come from anyone he expects. Instead, the air twists, and a half-black, half-white plant person that looks almost like an aloe vera (or a Venus flytrap, he thinks, remembering Naruto’s words from earlier) is dumped into the center of the room. He, like any sane shinobi, immediately attempts to drown it with a Water Dragon. At the same time, Hashirama tries to rip the creature apart with mokuton. His water is soon replaced by fire- both regular and Amaterasu. Someone is screaming and Tobirama punches Izuna on principal. There’s a miniature explosion that doesn’t destroy the Hokage’s office only because of the many, many seals on the room. The room is also charged with electricity and Tobirama realizes that it’s really too small of a room for seven people (nine- where did the one-eyed Uchiha and Hatake pair come from?) to collectively attack a sentient plant. A plant planning world domination, if Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke are to be believed.

As suddenly as the chaos started, it comes to a stop. The room is strangely silent in the absence of screaming and jutsu being thrown about. There is a soggy blackened char in the center of the room that used to be some sort of living creature. They all watch the charbroiled pile for a moment before Naruto laughs shakily.

"Well that was easier than I- HOLY FUCK IT TWITCHED!" He shrieks, voice reaching impressive octaves. Naruto, Sasuke, Madara, and Hashirama proceed to attack again, despite the fact that the ‘twitch’ was just the charcoal crumbling. The screaming from earlier was apparently a joint effort between Madara, Hashirama, and Naruto, one that they resume now. Sakura sighs, or Tobirama assumes she does, he can’t hear her, pinching the bridge of her nose in exasperation. Tobirama understands the sentiment, glowering at the four idiots, two of which are his. The second attack settles and what was charcoal is now a very tiny pile of fine ash. It’s hard to believe the pile was once at all a human-sized sentient plant creature.

"Are you done?" Tobirama asks. Hashirama smiles wobbly, looking like he’s on the verge of tears.

"J-just as long a-as it doesn’t t-twitch again." Tobirama finds himself exchanging a glance with Izuna, which he never would have though possible a year ago. The Uchiha heir gives the pile of ash a doubtful look.

"I don’t think it can twitch, even if it wanted to," he remarks dryly. Tobirama snorts.

"It’d be a bit impressive, actually," he agrees, apparently much to Hashirama and Naruto’s horror. The door creaks open and Hashirama’s assistant pokes his head in, shaking like a leaf. Everyone turns towards the poor man and Tobirama realizes, rather suddenly, that they never activated the silencing seals.

"I-i-is everything a-alright?" The man squeaks out. Then, without warning and before anyone can respond to the poor assistant, Izuna turns and swipes his legs out from under him and he lands on the floor with a crash. He blinks up at the Uchiha heir before shrugging as best as he could while on the ground.

"Fair enough," he says agreeably. The assistant faints.
