I feel like one or the key issues of Zuko’s redemption arc is that they try to make him more like iroh.

It bothers me since it really only shifted from Zuko blindly following his father to blindly following his uncle. There isnt much personal growth that occurs, rather a shift in loyalty.

I think the problem comes from trying to make Zuko have a similar redemption to iroh. Which is why he never address his past behaviour nor he really has empathy on how his actions affected others as Iroh didnt need to confront that either for his redemption.

Plus the fundamental problem Zuko had was not that he failed to see how war could be bad ( though that was another flaw) but rather the Agni Kai taught hum that compassion was a weakness. Zuko straighr up was told to ignore his own morality which left him confised and clinging to his fathers.

Of course Zuko would steal from Song and destroy Kyoshi village. Compassion is weakness and Zuko cannot be weak.

Its strange to me that iroh never once tries addressing this. Its really odd to me iroh never even notices these connections as i dont remember his ever telling Zuko he didnt deserve to get burned (at least, not before Zuko changed sides).

Thats not to say its an excuse for what Zuko’s done, its just me being fustrated it was never expanded upon as the core root of his problems. Once Zuko regained his sense of morality for himself (not just following whoever he thought was right) then he could have grown immensly and a lot of flaws would be addressed.

I dknt know, it just boyhers me immensly that Zuko’s arc was more framed as ‘Iroh is always right, be loyal to your uncle and do what he says’ (because thats what fundamnetally changed when he switched sides) instead of ‘Your father was wrong and always has been. You are not weak becasue of compassion. Now stand up for your people just like you did in thaf first agni kai.’

Zuko as a character feels stiffled by Iroh, since he kept getting told what to do instead of the lesson kicking his ass and forcing him tk understand kn a deeper level.

Sorry for the long ramble. I like Zuko as a character (hes a jerk who can be kind, its just underneath alll that trauma) and His redemption trying ti make him more like iroh kinda does hum a diservice to me.

Zuko's redemption arc was so much more centered on Iroh, Zuko's guilt about Iroh, and Iroh's plans for Zuko than it was on Zuko developing compassion for ordinary Fire Nation and Earth Kingdom people that it's not even funny, and that's a shame.

You know i feel like a part of the reason the manga falls a bit flat to me is the fact many themes just dont get carried through.

Well, its more accurate to say they don’t get build up.

Quirkless discrimination and quirk discriminatiom in general? Certain characters talk about it but we don’t see it perpetuated in UA or other heroes in general after the characters backstory.

Like we are told through monoma and shinsou and midoriya that you are discriminated against by your quirks or lack there of. But we dont get to hear any of class 1-A talk about their experienxe despite many of them having ‘useless’ or ‘villanous quirks’. Hell we dont even see any quirkist attitudes portrayed by the class or other heroes. Its hard to see quirkism as an in universe issue if no one from the main cast seems to hold those beliefs even though they should. (Ans that does mean the narrative acknowledging theyre wrong and not skimming over them). (Like its never acknowledged that bakugou may be quirkist at all by other characters even though he should still have those beliefs)

Incidentilly, it makes it hard to related to our villians if we dont have anyone explicitly acknowledge that shared experience. It also undermines midoriya’s character as that shift from his treatement as quirkless to a powerful wuirk should have gotten more focus. Its a massive social shift and im surprised there arent instances someone says something about quirklessness since he was bullied for it extensively so it must be something people have an opinion about.

Same issue with corruption in society. It was shoe-horned with stain and lady nagant so we never see the consequences or people perpetuating corruption. We dont have ant corrupt heroes so we dont know anything about the scalw of it.

We are routinely told issues but we rarely see the lasting consequences of it.

Mt Lady and Uwambi being primarily going after media attention isnt addressed much beyond fan service. Theyre still good heroes so it feels that the celebrity aspect doesnt impact them.

Endeavour being overly violent ( and also bakugou) isnt never addressed as a negative trait often enough. So we dknt see any consequences of how being overly violent could cause the corruption pf society to fester. We only have the liscensing exam address this and its treated as a joke and not a major issue.

The world feels underdeveloped in mha. So many things that should affect society not getting shown and its consequences properly addresses. And it ends up dragging the characters down with it as well.

But you hit on a key flaw in the manga’s writing; it tells you that certain things are happening but hardly ever shows it.

We see a bit of quirkless discrimination at the start of the manga but it never pops up again. (Unless you count All Might’s belief that the world has to believe he was born powerful.) So, that suggests that Izuku wasn’t picked on because he was quirkless, but because everyone was sucking up to Bakagou. We don’t even get flashbacks of anyone other than Bakagou picking on Izuku for not having a quirk. (Okay, Bakagou’s lackies but they only acted when Bakagou was around from what we’ve seen.)

We’re told that mutants are discriminated against, however, we never see it. Even with side materials, the worst we’re shown is that the world hasn’t made a lot of accommodations for larger mutants. Which sucks but keep in mind quirks have only been around for a handful of generations and a LOT of things need to be handled. However, there have been scenes that show that the world is trying to pick up the slack. (Though I don’t have it on me right now, I will be tackling this when I can.) The worst we’ve seen in the story of discrimination against mutants is when Shinsou called Ojiro a monkey, that’s all I can recall.

Speaking of Shinsou, his whole character is built around the fact that he’s struggling to be a hero because he has a quirk others deem villainous. But aside from one scene where some kids are being condescending assholes we never see this. We see people requesting he not use it on them and with good reason; despite the fact it makes others uncomfortable, Shinsou is very trigger-happy with his quirk, so they have to ask him. And when I say "uncomfortable," I mean that they don’t like losing control of their bodies or not remembering what they did, not that they’re scared of it. In fact, we never see Shinsou ostracized for his quirk, quite the opposite. We see everyone stating how awesome his quirk is and how they think he’ll an excellent hero. Because of this, it’s annoying when he goes on about how he could never be a hero because of his quirk.

Most irritating thing? There was an easy way to fit it in! At the Sports festival, have some of the heroes state that Shinsou’s quirk is creepy. Then when he’s doing his test with Class A and B, the teen could have flashbacks to others calling him a villain in his old school. Not only would the latter help us to sympathize more with Shinso, but it would have made the compliments he got mean so much more.

As is though, it looks like the only condemning Shinsou is Shinsou. (He reminds me of Goob from “Meet the Robinsons.”) The only reason he didn’t get into the hero course was that he was out of shape. If an invisible girl with no other strengths and Ojiro who is basically normal except for having a fluffy tail could get in, then he could have too. Honestly, it feels like he’s just ignoring actual obstacles and focusing on a made-up one in his head.

Monoma—sorry, even though I like him, my mind is mostly blank. I do recall that from what we’ve seen he’s one the best fighters against Class 1-A, even going toe-to-toe with Bakagou and nearly winning. I don’t recall more than a throwaway line that he says addressing the fact he was discriminated against.

As for the heroes—again, we’re told that they’re as bad as the villains, but while we’ve seen the hero’s commission acting iffy, we haven’t seen any heroes take advantage of their position of power or do anything bad. There are only two exceptions; 

One is Hawks, who killed Twice. However, it can be argued that he had a right to as Twice was a known criminal part of a terrorist organization, and killing him was for the greater good as his quirk could have been used to hurt a lot of innocent people. And then there’s Endeavor, who is shown to be a very, very shitty father and a husband who should do jail time for his abuse, but is still a decent hero who does his job and protect lives. And—unlike others—he acknowledges his crimes and makes no excuses. He takes full blame and doesn’t ask anyone to forgive him. Rather, he states that he wants to earn it if he can’t. He even acknowledges that in some cases he might not be able to do so, but even then he still tries to do what’s right.

So, to reiterate the manga is terrible at showing, not telling. And even with the telling most of it is done in one-line lines. This is a big deal as all of these are major things for plots and characters. If you’re going to introduce stuff like this, you need to have solid evidence. As of now we just have he said, she said, they said.

Captain Barnacles

Extremely claustrophobic. Hates any small space that he cannot get out of. If he's in trapped somewhere to long he panics horribly

Worries about the others if he doesn't know exactly where they are. With the amount if times they've all been separated with no real way to find each other he worries that one of them may get lost

Should one of them get hurt Captain Barnacles just. He does what he can but he has a bit of a anxiety attack later because he feels he should've prevented it. He's the Captain after all

He misses his old home. He loves it on the Octopod, but sometimes there's just. Something else that's missing.

Sometimes the pressure of feeling like. Like uhm. Being Captain and being responsible for his crew. It gets to much sometimes. Especially when something goes wrong.

Kwazii

He's very fidgety so being in confined spaces isn't great for him either.

Sometimes he feels ljke. Like he annoys the others with his tales of monsters and just. Just stuff like that

Worries that he's going to lose his crew. His family. He doesn't want to be cast away.

Gets really upset if he thinks someone is reallt mad at him. He tries to fix whatever he did as soon as possible

He does have a mysterious pirate past. Im assuming he didn't stay with his old crew. Maybe due to how he sees the world, especially sea life .

Worries that his stimming might be annoying to a degree

Has some . Mysterious scars. He says he got them in battle with a dangerous sea monster.

Gets dysphoric occasionally. Especially if he's already upset.

Peso

So much anxiety. He gets overwhelmed real easily and panics quickly. This can cause a complete shutdown or a panic attack

I believe he's the youngest on the Octopod. Because of this and a few other reasons he feels like. Like he doesn't really know his place. He's a medic obviously, but he's not as experienced as everyone else is

He worries horribly when someone gets hurt, and overthinks that soemthine might be worse than it is.

If two or more of the crew gets into an argument, the angry type, Peso has to flee to his room and lock the door. He doesn't like his friends fighting, and angry people tend to make his insecurities worse. He'll start to think its all his fault and lock himself in a loop

When he has a meltdown its . Hard to pull him out of it. He tends to fixate on just. Every thing wrong.

Peso just. Really doesn't want to let anyone down.

He misses his family. He loves his found family! But like Barnacles, he does miss his other one

Terrified of the dark. Has gotten a bit better abojt his fear but. Still hates the dark

Dashi

Dashi doesn't have break downs easily ,but when she does it's really rough

She can't be in the quiet too long because the silence just. It messes with her. Makes her feel uneasy

She tries to take things easily, but when she gets overwhelmed or angry she tends to snap at the others. This can cause problems

She's also not as experienced as say, Captain Barnacles, Kwazii, and Tweak. She's a tech expert, but she's not super used to being underwater all the time

She wishes she could contribute more to the team

She has a few chronic pains that come an go. Its really. Some days can be bad

Tweak

Tweak cant sleep. She has horrible insomnia.

This can make mornings especially difficult, and if she doesn't get enough sleep she gets bad mood swings. This can lead to fighting

They get bad dysphoria, and sometimes they just. Hate that they feel that way.

As the creator of the Gups, he feels guilty when skemthing goes wrong with one of them. Especially if a glitch or something she missed gets someone else hurt.

Sometimes they'll work themselves into a frenzy and forget just. Basic self care lkke drinking water or eating.

Tweak worries about being to blunt and hurting someone else's feelings.

Worries about not knowing exactly what tk do.

Doesn't like loud noises at all. They bother her a lot

Shellington

Shellington very much has autism! This makes it a bit harder to understand social cues and if the others are fighting he sometimes accidentally makes things worse.

It also makes it hard if things go off schedule. He gets just. Overwhelmed and . If it's really bad has a meltdown

Sometimes fears he's doing something wrong. Like , like what he says and things like that. He over thinks an gets really anxious about it

He doesn't like angry yelling, it's a trigger for him. He'll shut down or have a meltdown.

Worries he annoys the crew when he infodumps

He's glad the vegimals (basically his children) have the rest of the Octonauts to fall back on if they need something he can't provide, but it does. Hurt a little, knowing he can't help them with everything

Shellington can accidentally lock himself into his research for hours at a time. Unhealthy so. Usually the Vegimals can break him out of it but not all the time.

Professor Inkling

I cant think of much for him, other he is old. He worries that the Octonauts, that his family will be. Just . Distraught.

He worries about all of them, a lot. He knows their young anf capable but. He's seen some of the stuff that happens. Its not always a safe job

He's more or less a therapist to everyone, and does his best to listen and help then with their problems. If he can't , he just let's them have a shoulder to cry on.

But because that was. Upsetting and . Sad . Im gonna do comfort ones now!! Because they're a family for the Goddesses sake!! They love and support each other through the hard times. I'm not gonna go one by one its hsut gonna be. A jumble of comfort things

The only one who really knows about Captain Barnacles' claustrophobia is Kwazii. It's not in his medical file for some reason. Anyway Kwazii will generally help Barnacles through a panic attack or joke with him to more or less put him at ease.

Kwazii is actually pretty open with his emotions. It's also really easy to pick up on when he's upset. The others get him gifts and littke trinkets or just spend time goofing off with him to cheer him up. Especially when he feels like he's being left behind.

Everyone does their best to help Captain Barnacles when he's just. Over worked. Or seriously worried. They let him sleep in extra or let him hover over them or just. Just listen to him and reassure him that it's OK to feel overwhelmed. They're ok, theyre all ok . During a day like that they host a movie night and take turns picking movies. All of them are there, and they have a wonderful time. If their Captain cries no one says anything anf they just huddle together and stay there as long as he needs

If there's a fight Barnacles or Kwazii usually de-escalate things before it gets too bad. If it results to yelling and Peso or Shellington flee they immediately stop and fix the situation. After wards they send someone to check on the both and they spend time calming down. Sometimes they watch movies, other times they ready together.

If Peso had a panic attack its normally Kwazii or Captain Barnacles who goes and helps. Mostly because they know how how deal with the situation better. They'll just. Sit an hug it out. Just let it all out an then afterwards they go somewhere quiet an just talk about nice things

Dashi checks on Tweak a lot to make sure she's doing ok. Skemtimes they have little sleepovers!

When Shellington gets overwhelmed the vegimals will jsut sit with him and ask questions about sea life!

no wait i figured it out, so like when i first decided on my Gordon vs Freeman dynamic i talked aboit how it could even apply to a prerescas gordon but i wasnt e tirely sure how it would be a seamless thing but i figured it out jist now while thinking about how ive been drawing a buncha silly prerescas gordons and how i need to reconcile the silloes with the serious kinda a dick interpretation i also hold for gordon

so essentially it all ckmes down to how people ptesent themselves for different situations and people, our consteuct of self and perosnas we put on obvs differ like how we act with parents vs friends or authority vs peers and public vs private and most importantly for gordon

work vs rest

in the haircut fic im working on i have gordon (Freeman) thinking about how his JOB is to save the world, Freeman is gordons worksona and saving the world has become gordons job so the more serious and work centered conception of self, Freeman has become adpated to function as this ruthless violent persona, he was already ruthless in how he worked toward his life goals pbyscial violence has just been added to Freemans repitoire of skills, even bwfore the rescas Freeman (before he became such a prominant feature of gordon to warrent the meta name since gordon doesnt actually refer to himself that way for the most part, its a tool for readers and me) was not just a worksona but a part of him becuase even how you "act" in certain situations is still part fo your personality, so even if Gordon is being silly Freeman and his stand offish dickishness is still Gordon, the differentiation of the two is only there to help outsiders see the difference of self

and gordon (Gordon) is how gordon acts when he is simply allowed to be, hes not worried about working and can rest, Gordon is gordon when he feels safe to care about others, hes far softer and sillier and his kinder aspect can shine, this portion doesnt once the rescas is the forefront becuz work has co.e to a viilent halt and this is a tragedy, he doesnt have the space or steength initially to put on a professional and protective front its not a job anymore its survival, but as time goes on survival Becomes gordons job so Freeman can flourish, he can put on that lrofessional unflappable front and there is no more rest

eventually survival and job start to become more seperate during hl2 and eps because of alyx but thats a different post, but it does make it so Freeman rests for small periods of time (particularly during the eps as he and alyx become much much closer) and Gordon becomes the forefront, friends are not work so of course that happens, but obvs just not for very long becuase alyx almost kinfof becomes a job (not in a oh shes annoying aay but in a "i dont want her to die because i care for her" therefore she must Survive) becuase again job and survival are so blurred for gordon at this point its hard to differentiate so he tends to switch rapidly between the two states becuase oh alyx is a friend so im Gordon but also i dknt sant her to die so im Freeman becaise wanting something not to die has become code for tbis is a job becuase its important for The Job but with friends you tend not to want them to die either way so they must Survive so that makes them a Job

so to sum up Freeman is essentialy gordons public/professional self which encompasses a more outward representation of gordons arrogance, standoffishness, and ruthlessness

and Gordon is gordons private/friendly self which encompasses a more outward representation kf his goofiness, caring, and emotionalness

just that before the rescas theyre werent prominant enough as identities to bother to use different names for in the narrative because there wasnt such a drastic difference in how and when they acted

I don’t see how people see how Anders is mistreated by the fandom when 98% of all DA related posts on tumblr are extremely pro Anders, that some people don’t even know Anti-Anders is even a thing

I mean, sure, a lot of da tumblr ranges from neutral to incredibly fond of Anders, but da tumblr does not make up the whole fandom. And even if he’s liked, that doesn’t mean he’s not mistreated! And a lot of the people who are an///ti anders or critical of him are fairly vocal. And an///ti Anders stuff I do somewhat separate from mishandling (there is ofc some overlap tho) cos... yeah there’s a lot of stuff abt Anders that really is fucked. He’s not exactly mr feminist. He’s kinda racist. I find many of his conversations w Merrill to be... frustrating, at best. ((I still love him because I butcher canon in the first place, I think that a few of my issues really can be chalked up to crappy or at least thoughtless writing, and even then I do recognize those flaws)).

But anyway, I do think he is mishandled and... I mean, I don’t want to say misunderstood, because the connotations of that aren’t what I’m going for... I guess I want to say poorly understood? By many in the fandom (this is addressing fandom on tumblr and outside. Bc again. Tumblr isn’t the whole fandom.). Esp when you think of that one post where it was like “all the apostate mages betray you in da” (I’m paraphrasing here) when, like, for m0rrigan and anders that is conditional at least, plain untrue at most (i lean more towards the latter, tho ig it depends on your game, your interpretations of that game, and your HCs oustide of gameplay).

And when I talk about his mistreatment I mostly talk about the whole blowing-up-the-Chantry business. Like there are apparently a lot of people off tumblr who find Anders annoying (I’m hesitant to feel either way abt it cos I don’t exactly click around on their blogs to see what they find annoying), but mostly I’m talking abt the chantry thing. That’s divisive. And I feel like... well Both sides do occasionally mistreat him, tho mostly those opposed to his actions do. Many on the not-so-pro-Anders side, I find, often misconstrue Anders’ motivations and reasoning and as such mistreat him because, as they personally don’t like him or his actions, they do not try to understand him or his actions and accordingly paint him in one light. (I don’t necessarily say this w/ like. Vitriol. Because I was the same towards V!vienne before I thought to actually try and understand what she was saying. And also because, again, I’ll say Anders wasn’t written well in aspects, largely cos I think BioWare was trying to force grey morality on situations where morality couldn’t exactly be so grey. And also I think that perhaps a good few people who decided they hated Anders before getting to the last straw were rivals w him, and thus got different interactions throughout, and especially in the post-explosion scene)

Sorry if this is kinda scattered and incoherent lmao i haven’t slept in like 24 hrs so I’m... hhh. But anyway, I think at the end of the day mistreated can be fairly subjective. I think he is mistreated by a good bit of fandom, even if many agree with at least his philosophy.

Hi, I know I don't really know you but I've followed you for quite awhile and I've seen that you have conversations with alot of anons who I think you know? So I have a bit of a problem kind of and I was wandering if you could maybe give me some advice on what to do? Okay so if you chose not to ignore this then basically one of the people who I went to school with last year (I am in college now) keeps asking to meet up which is understandable but when we went to school she was apart of my (small) friend group for awhile then she suddenly left to go hang out with other people and would barely talk to us. And once I was planning to go to my girlfriend's house and to the beach with her when my other friend asked to meet up, I told her I had plans and she asked if she could tag along. I found that a bit weird cause she's inviting herself to someone else's house and to what might have been a date. When I told her she'd have to ask my gf cause its her house she told us to meet up in her town (we all went to the same school but live in diffrent small towns near each other except for where I live which is bigger and where our school was) cause she wasn't allowed to go to my gfs town.

That was really long sorry and I haven't explained much so far but basically she was really clingy and overstepping but abandoned us abruptly and now she keeps asking to meet up all the time when I have a job and I dknt like to meet up with too many people, even when it was with my girlfriend that was the first time we saw each other out of school in months. I just really don't want to meet up with her but I don't want to he rude either. And in the nicest way possible if I were to meet up with a friend it wouldn't be her. I feel so bad about that but I really really don't want to see her.

Again that's really long so I'm sorry and if u don't want to answer this that's fine but if you do then do you have any idea what I should say?

If you cut her off, she's going to be hurt for sure. If you keep her close, you're the one who's going to end bad in the end.

What you need to do is really think if this person is actually good for you. Does she really bring something good into your life? The good things someone brings to your life must be more than the bad things.

And I know this might sound harsh, but it's not. It's your own well being what matters here and it's not selfish wanting to be good. It doesn't mean you didn't like her or you were a fake friend, it only means your Journey together is over and that's alright. You can thank her for the good moments she gave you and wish her all the best 💕

my day yesterday was okay, i've just been relaxing, and studying occasionally. went out to explore a nearby town too, it's so pretty there. and much colder (since it's a highlands) of course!! After 4 days, you find out which route you get! And theres 11 days in a route including the party day. Um Zen's route is easy to get but it's also hard. It's easy bc u know all the right answers but hard bc u have to be someone u would never naturally be. Like u have to be so cringe and act in love with him from the start omg... Like your his fan.. it's so funny. His route is the only one where i feel like I would never say those things. He's cute but um I wish u could get his route without acting like a freak.
