Loitering with intent to Wattpad

I've been dithering about this a lot since I started getting back into visible internet activity with my writing, and I decided I'm going to start a new Wattpad profile for my microfiction and maybe for longer stuff later when I have longer stuff to share.

I've been on Wattpad before. I was never hugely involved in big site-wide activities, but one of my stories was featured (I didn't apply for that or suggest it, I just logged in one day and it had happened, which was super weird), some of my books were on official genre reading lists, I read a lot there, and I shared a few novellas and novels which I love with all my heart for being learning experiences, but that aren't anywhere online now and don't really represent what I do anymore.

I definitely don't write Typical Brand Wattpad stories and I'm fully aware that the majority of WP users aren't exactly my audience, but I also don't really care, especially since the site took away basically all discoverability tools and sort of became an online slush pile for their publishing department and media partnerships. I'm not complaining about that at all, just acknowledging that it's not exactly a place to share writing socially anymore, so I don't have that expectation. I know a lot of people got royally pissed off about it, but meh. Businesses gonna business.

The main thing that made me not want to be there before was the aggressively identity politics-ish vibe that seemed to suddenly become a very strong focus. Again, not complaining (apart from about the brigading, representation policing, and other unpleasant villagers-with-pitchforks drama, but I assume that's not common), it's just not something I enjoy as the main theme of my online creative experiences.

I honestly don't know how prevalent that whole "the demographic info of writer and their characters is the most, or only, important thing about a story" approach is, or if it was just a huge deal in the circles I moved in at that particular time. Maybe it's entirely possible to be on Wattpad in a small quiet way and not get bogged down in that. I mean, Tumblr is undeniably aggressively identity politics-y overall and people get absolutely ripped to shreds for not ticking all the ever-changing boxes of moral and social acceptability, but it's not something I encounter here on a regular basis because the people I choose to follow and interact with aren't like that.

What I did enjoy about Wattpad was the platform itself, in terms of function, aesthetics and usability. While it definitely isn't somewhere to bring people into from elsewhere (you pretty much have to set up an account and/or download the app to read anything and the ads are TERRIBLE if you don't have a premium subscription), it's a lovely user experience from a writing-and-sharing perspective and lets you create very slick, beautiful books. I also met some very cool people there and it can be great for finding things to read, if you don't object to doing some digging to reach the gold.

Writing serialised fiction and posting as I write is definitely not my thing (I tried it and it wasn't for me), but I'm creating content based around microfiction for other platforms anyway and I get a kick out of playing around with sharing on various channels. I'm also writing longer stories anyway and not planning to sell those in any kind of mainstream way (they'll be downloadable for free on my website, with an option to leave a tip) so it's not like having things on Wattpad would negatively impact anything else I'm doing.

So yeah. That's a thing. I'll post a link here once I get it all set up. I'd love to hear from other Tumblr folk who are on Wattpad as well so I can visit you and read yer stuff <3

How the worst parts of the internet helped shape me as a kid

If you know what those three letters stand for, there's a good chance you grew up on the internet like myself. An internet filled with opportunities to steal your innocence. 

There was something special about the internet of the late '90s and early 2000s that can never, ever be  replicated. It was mysterious, misunderstood, and truly a free place of exploration. More importantly, it was mostly anonymous, or at least it appeared that way.

As parents currently grapple with how their children interact with the internet at such a young age, it's important to take a step back and look at how we got here. Let's relive some of the horrors I witnessed growing up on the internet and consider what lessons their lingering effects hold for this generation. 

Chat rooms

For those utterly lost, a/s/l stands for age, sex, and location, and was commonly used in chat rooms during the golden era of the internet — 1995 to 2005-ish. Thanks to Facebook and the rise of social media, much of what we now do on the internet is tied to our real names. But back in the day, we hid behind usernames and screennames, and we changed them often.

I don't exactly remember any vivid conversations I had on the internet with strangers, but I do recall frequenting Yahoo Chat rooms when I couldn't find any of my friends to chat with on AIM. Remembering that today, I'm kinda horrified.

While those chat rooms around the internet had plenty of normal people just looking for conversations, they were also riddled with who the fuck knows trying to get off or take advantage of a young kid. There was even a dedicated section just for teens. Even worse, you could chat with people based on a specific location.

Yahoo Chat rooms were rife with catfishing long before the internet term was ever coined. You could be whoever you wanted to be when someone asked you a/s/l? And people were pretty upfront about seeking kids to chat with. While, thankfully, there were no To Catch a Predator scenarios for me in the days of the early internet, it's highly likely I interacted with plenty of scummy people looking to take advantage of kids during that time. 

Back in 2005, Yahoo finally shut down user-created chat rooms in an agreement with law enforcement. "Yahoo removed or barred the posting of 70,000 rooms whose names suggested illegal conduct, including the promotion of sex between adults and children," CNET reported at the time. 

Yahoo permanently shuttered its public chatroom feature in 2012.

Somehow, I made it out unscathed, and was smart enough to know better, but the chat rooms of the early internet were truly a terrifying place. 

Rotten.com and gore galore

Just last year, the internet lost one of its earliest and most disturbing websites, rotten.com. For now, at least. 

"The soft white underbelly of the net, eviscerated for all to see: Rotten dot com collects images and information from many sources to present the viewer with a truly unpleasant experience," a welcome message reads on an archived version of the website from 1999.

Simply put, rotten was a compilation of the worst images the internet could find. From pictures of dead celebrities to photos of brutal crime scenes, car crashes, and botched surgeries, the shock site was capable of disturbing just about anyone who made their way to it. 

Rotten.com was introduced to me by an old boyfriend of my sister's when I was probably 11 or 12. I recall seeing a photo of a man involved in a motorcycle accident, his head splattered across a highway, and another picture of a guy sucking his own dick. The picture of the accident still fucks me up; the photo of the guy giving himself a blowjob is still impressive. 

While I (thankfully) never became a frequent visitor of rotten.com, the disturbing images I saw on the site desensitized and prepared me for the awful internet of today. As I grew up with the internet by my side, I can recall seeing countless beheadings. I watched the entire video of Saddam Hussein being executed in 2006, an unnecessary amount of shootings, car accidents, and just about everything else that would make a normal person vomit. 

Seeing those pictures and videos at a young age absolutely helped me cope with some of the things I see on the internet today. Would I be better off not seeing them? Maybe. 

Porn, porn, and more porn

I was about 11 or 12 when I was sitting at my computer, probably playing 3D Pinball when I overheard my dad and his friend talking in the kitchen, just down the hall.

"You can just type lingerie into the search and you wouldn't believe what comes up," he told my father, revealing that there was actually porn on the computer in the living room, which he literally never touched at that point.

Of course, the first moment I was left alone after hearing there was porn on the internet, I typed something like "boobs" into AskJeeves or Yahoo search. I surfed my way to a crude porn site as fast as my 56k modem could bring me, only to be greeted with an age disclaimer asking me if I was 18 years of age or older.

After thinking it over for a few seconds, I decided to risk it and click "yes." Despite thinking the FBI was going to raid my house for this very serious offense, this began my exploration into sex. I never got "the talk" from my parents. It didn't matter — I had the internet. 

It's worth noting here that the internet moved at a grueling pace back in the late '90s when 56k was still king. So navigating a web page with photos, like porn, took a very long time. Given this fact, and that at the time my computer was shared with my family, I decided to do what any preteen would do with a color printer. 

That's right, I printed out porn. My mom found it in my sock drawer, and still occasionally makes fun of me for it.

While there are more than a few think pieces on how learning about sex through internet porn is terrible for a young boy's mind, and will turn them into sexist monsters with unrealistic expectations, I'm thankful for the unfiltered internet as a useful resource in my horny pubescent youth. 

Talking about sex with anyone — even friends — can be humiliating at that age, and at the time sex education provided to me in school was laughably bad, sometimes even frowned upon. That said, there are definitely more appropriate ways to learn about sex, and as a society, we have much to improve upon. 

Weed, drugs, and an online education

When I was 14 years old, I smoked weed for the first time.

This wasn't some spontaneous decision made in a dimly-lit room forced by peer pressure. I wanted to try marijuana, I sought it out, and I learned everything that I need to know about smoking weed through the internet.

Weeks before lighting up, the topic came up among a few of my good friends at the time, and we decided we were going to do it. I won't lie, I was pretty terrified of what would happen, so I did my best to sift through the bullshit pushed upon us by D.A.R.E., and find out the truth about marijuana. I found Erowid.

While there were plenty of websites dedicated to cannabis in 2001 and 2002, Erowid was, and remains, one of the best sources for information on drugs. The thing that makes Erowid so great is that it provides real information from real people about their experiences with various drugs, including dosages, effects, and experiences.

I'll be the first to admit that I adopted cannabis use way too young, and I'm sure that it affected my school performance and my brain development. But teens and young adults aren't going to stop experimenting with drugs and alcohol, and at least the internet informed me of the real dangers in a way that wasn't preachy.

Would I have tried cannabis without the internet? Definitely, but using the web to learn about drugs was an invaluable resource that was not available elsewhere. I consider myself lucky for landing on Erowid, and not a forum with irresponsible users suggesting people us harder drugs. 

Are the kids gonna be alright?

I've been thinking a lot recently about how the internet has shaped me as a person, and how it's affecting the youth today. Before muttering their first words, kids have probably already watched a YouTube video. They have Instagram accounts before they're able to read, and hashtags dedicated to their entire lives. 

But for me, the internet was a choice. I sought it out,  and all of its opportunities to corrupt my youth. For kids today, it's become nearly impossible to disconnect. 

And again, when I discovered corners of the internet I shouldn't have ventured to as a kid, it moved at a snail's pace. Today's web is fast, pictures load in the blink of an eye, and HD streaming video is basically expected, thanks to YouTube.

It feels like the internet is at a breaking point, and we as a society are finally questioning the experiment. It's incredibly important for us to ask ourselves how the internet has altered our lives, and not just the convenience factor with 2-day free shipping, but really, how has the internet changed who we are? It certainly changed me growing up. 

I do still value the internet as an important growing up tool, which helped me learn about life, both the good parts and bad. But in the back of my mind I'll always wonder what would have happened to me if I never logged on.

Of Gaming,  Maths and Misery

Onward!  The second of God knows how many posts on the topic.

People used to dismiss video games as mindless entertainment that created a generation of lazy, disinterested youth who would rather stare at a screen than go outside.  Kinda funny how now almost EVERYONE is staring at a screen for long periods of time and it’s totally cool.  Well, to a point….I mean, you CAN go outside and do stuff too.  But anyways…

I got hooked on the game Destiny and while I loved the campaign side of it, I was TERRIFIED to try the competitive side or PvP as its known.  I am really uncomfortable with strangers to begin with and it requires often being on a headset with people you don’t know.  So, I went a long time without trying what was one of the most popular parts of the game. You can look for people to play with via LFG sites (Looking for Group) but it’s a painful process for someone like me who is so self-conscious and finds making new friends very difficult let alone approaching strangers on line and asking them to play a game with me lol

I decided to try starting a Clan on the Destiny website but make it for people like me who suffer from anxiety, social awkwardness and have it be a “safe space” where there would be no judgemental shit (gamers can be real assholes) and a spirit of inclusiveness.  Age, sex, culture….none of that mattered.  You didn’t have to be good at the game either.  Just maybe try stepping out of your comfort zone a bit like I was doing.

Well, I had no idea my vision would resonate with so many people.  A rep from Bungie, the author of the game, contacted me and asked if I would like to be featured on their website.

Having no idea what that meant, I said “Sure” and filled out the questionnaire they sent me and as soon as it went live on the site, I had a maxed out clan and 1500 members in less than a weekend.  Within three months, I went from having 10 members to over 3000 across three platforms.  PS4, XBOX, and PS3

Now this post isn’t to brag about that.  It’s to talk about how gaming helps people.  In this particular instance, with self-confidence, self-esteem, and things like the aforementioned anxiety issues.

When I started gaming it was completely solo. The only interaction you’d have with another player was if they were in the room with you on the other controller. No online, no game lobbies, no clans. It was perfect for me.  I had a friend who played and we’d spend hours on stuff like Tomb Raider, all sorts of sports games, and I especially enjoyed puzzlers and platformers.  

Problem for me was, problem solving puzzlers triggered a physical reaction in me the way that math and tests in school did.  When faced with math, I would have this feeling like someone just grabbed hold of the back of my head and was trying to pull my face off.  My stomach would knot up, I’d get anxious, and ultimately flounder miserably.  I never made it past grade 9 math to make a long story short.

(BUMMER ALERT: This next part is depressing but integral)

To go along with crippling anxiety, I had an undiagnosed Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)  You see, back when I was about 5, a bunch of kids tried to cave my skull in with rocks. I was literally stoned.  Not in the fun, “Dave’s not here man!” way…that came later.  But in the Biblical, Life of Brian “who threw that” way.  Why? Because of the colour of my skin.   So that, among other things (including woeful health care that involved just throwing some stitches in me and sending me home where my adopted family ignored the vomiting and accompanying migraines) left me with a TBI that lay undiscovered til an MRI a few years ago that joyfully showed not just scar tissue on what little I have that passes for a brain, but an aneurysm somewhere in the left carotid just to sweeten the deal.

So… if it goes off, my demise will be on the hands of those kids all those years ago and they’ll never know they ultimately succeeded in killing me.  Now, I would be lying if I said I didn’t have a lot of anger about it, but I also know that that kind of racism and hate is taught.  At home, usually.  You’re not born with it.  So…while I can’t say I forgive them, I can say I understand that it’s not entirely on them.  I’ve made as much peace with it as I can.

Anyways, having this physical reaction to math made learning a bit of an issue.  While I was fine with other subjects, anything involving tests or activities that centered me out would cause this most unpleasant of feelings.  There’s a ton of other reasons for that but this isn’t really supposed to be about me and my childhood, it’s supposed to be about gaming, games, math etc. and how it helps people.

I dropped out of school in the eleventh grade because I hated school and the way it made me feel.  The two things that saved me from turning to a life of crime or at least more very poor choices were music and martial arts.  I’ve covered this elsewhere so I won’t get into it here.

Now the math thing I realised also stemmed from how I was being taught.  Numbers on a page evoked the aforementioned stresses.  Practical application of math, like while playing darts, did not.  I had a bass player who loved playing darts and his game was 501.  You start with a score of 501 and subtract your score per 3 darts til you hit zero. I found I liked playing too but realised I was going to have to do math in my head.  It scared me so I just watched for a while until finally I was talked into playing.  Strangely, and very surprisingly, I didn’t feel that same stress and anxiety I did when doing math on paper.  It made no sense to me but it made me happy that in a short time I could and still do subtraction pretty quickly without having to write it out.

Now, I’m no educator (obviously) so I can’t explain the ins and outs of it but if I did things in a hands on, practical way, I would learn and have learned a lot of stuff nobody that taught me would have ever expected.  I was told by a grade 5 teacher that I would “never amount to anything like the rest of my dirty drunken kind”  Little did she know I would go on to become proficient at multiple instruments including guitar, drums, bass and keyboards, sing and play in touring club acts and learn how to do front of house sound for live bands and work with some popular at the time Canadian bands like Sloan, I Mother Earth, Tea Party, Moist and a bunch of other alt-rock acts, jazz ensembles and even toured with an awesome Drag ensemble as the live sound engineer.

None of this happened by going to college and learning (Daughter of mine: DO NOT follow my example.  Stay in school!  I am an anomaly) but by teaching myself as far as the music part goes (I was actually kicked out of my high school music class) and having someone take me on the road as kind of an intern and show me how to set up, run and maintain a large sound system in numerous environments.  I found I could troubleshoot, work under tremendous pressure in a live environment, all to my great surprise.  

The reason was, for me anyways; because I learned this all in a practical way.  I remember we had a college that taught audio engineering that would send students to the production company I worked for and I was charged from time to time with taking them into a live situation and putting them to work.  They had no real practical experience but loads of theoretical knowledge.

I figured I’d teach them how I was taught.  Throw em in the fire and see which ones think to jump out. I gave this kid total control of the show one time and the entire left bank of speakers went out in the first song and he had this deer in the headlights look as the audience, band members friends and family, all started turning around to look angrily at us.  “What do I do????”  he asked.  I said what were you taught?  He had no answer and was genuinely beginning to melt down and I don’t relish in other peoples discomfort so I offered this: follow the signal.  Meaning, follow the sound signal from the mixing console back to the speakers and figure out where it’s failed.  

Somewhere in that chain, something has failed.  We know it’s nothing at the band/stage end of it because it’s the speakers that aren’t working.  So start subtracting the stuff that it couldn’t be and find the few things it might be.  It sounds like its complicated, but in actual practice, it’s quite simple. Subtraction.  One of my old childhood tormentors in math was now a friend.  

He, understandably, had no idea what to do under that much pressure so I left the light tech at the board and walked him through the process.  

We knew back then that the signal comes to the mixing console via a cable we called the snake containing the signal from all the instruments on stage.  That isn’t the problem.  The sound is making it to the console.  Next, the sound goes from the console into processing units like compressors, equalizers, effects units etc.  Well, out of those subtract the ones that aren’t applied to the entire mix.  FX units are applied to individual tracks or instruments or groups of instruments, so we know that’s not the problem. Follow the signal.  

What things after you leave the mixing area affect the path of sound heading to the left and right side speakers?  If its not there in your rack at the console, then follow the cables back to the racks of amplifiers that power the speakers.  Have any of them shut down?  Has something come unplugged?  And so on.  In that instance, a poorly wired amp rack was the culprit and simple subtraction (sorta) saved the day

**Of course, it’s more accurately an example of deduction or the process of elimination BUT the point is more importantly that practical application was how I learned the trade and was able to explain it to someone with mostly theoretical knowledge.

“Now what in the holy hell has this got to do with anything?” you may ask.
