Louie

- autistic with ADHD overlap

- Inattentive

- the longest he’s slept for was 25 hours

- Deep as hell sleeper takes him at least and hour or two to come to full control

- Has 0 filter will literally say whatever comes to his mind regardless of how mean it may be or how crazy it might sound

- Talks to himself a crazy amount

- Louie has a banging TikTok where he just flexes and makes fun of Scrooge

- Louie has a huge social media presence in general he keeps it on the down low nobody knows about it and Louie would like to keep it that way

- Louie is a picky eater but eats all the time constantly snacking if the pantry is empty it was probably Louies doing

- He probably watches shitty movies and claims it’s too make fun of them but he really just likes them

- Huey will randomly bring up a random memory if it somehow resurfaces to his mind no one knows how he remembers half this stuff and sometimes he brings up stuff they’d wish he’d forgotten

- Has definitely never said anything he didn’t mean

- Never says “I promise” if he knows he can’t do it

- Huey really just wants to be good at everything he tries so when he isn’t he just kinda gives up on it

- So obviously Huey isn’t a “practice makes perfect” kind of kid he’s more the “if it’s not right the first time scrap it and never try again”

- Huey probably holds himself to such a high standard and puts so much stress on himself to always be perfect

- Pretends not too care but he totally does

- After extensive therapy that was suggested by Violet had the rest of her friends she’s able to look at her own shadow again even if sometimes it really freaks her out

- Wishes she were a vampire and definitely reads those dumb vampire/werewolf stories

- Really likes that she’s taller than all her friends uses that against her Huey fucking hates her for it

- Her favorite crime is arson

- Because she’s a rebellious teen her and officer M’ma have had a few run ins

- Definitely dresses however see feels on her off days she throws people off when she shows up ripped jeans and leather jackets

- Violet is still a hard core skeptic despite having a sister made of shadows and a father who is a vampire

- Her hair is always a frizzy mess so she chooses never to do anything with it and just keeps it in a bun

Pokemon Home is a Team Rocket scheme to steal your pokemon and lease them back to you.

Up front I want to be clear, this is not to hate on Pokemon Sword and Shield in and of themselves. As stand alone pokemon games they look good, great even, and if you're looking forward to them with eager anticipation, that's great too. But for me, the feeling is more dread and dismay, and the reason why is Pokemon Home.

There are lots of ways to love and things to love about the Pokemon games. From solo adventures to trading with friends to competitive battles online, there's something for almost anyone, but from the very beginning one of the core appeals of pokemon has been collecting. It's right there in the theme song: "Gotta catch 'em all." While some pokemon fans just play each game in turn, many lovingly cultivate a menagerie of pocket monsters from game to game catching and naming and training them all.

From that completionist's perspective, a key feature of Pokemon as a franchise, the thing that elevates it above all the other monster collecting games that have followed in its wake, is that you never need to leave that collection behind. For years you've been able to take your pokemon with you, watching your collection grow from game to game and generation to generation. You could feel free to spend hours naming and training and growing attached to each little packet of bits and bytes, confident they'd still be with you years and games down the line.

That continues with generation 8, but there's been a fundamental change. For the first time since generation 3, you can't bring all your pokemon into the new games. Instead they're supposed to live in "Pokemon Home," a cloud based paid subscription service, from which only a curated selection of pokemon will be available in any individual main series game going forward.

Pokemon Home is a trap. Once you transfer your pokemon to Pokemon Home, on a fundamental level they simply aren't yours anymore. That's that’s the Pokemon Company's collection now, and they’ll get to decide which you get to play with, when and how you access them, and most importantly how much you'll have to pay them for the privilege.

If they only want to charge you only a small nominal price for the first year? That's great. But maybe next year they decide they want a few more bucks a month. Or a few dozen. What are you gonna do? They already have your pokemon. If you want access to them, you'll have to pony up. Worse still, if you miss too many payments you’ll be risking a one way trip to the pokeglue factory for all the pokepals you've gathered over the last decade or so.

"Stop being an alarmist," you might be thinking. "Pokemon Home is just an updated version of Pokemon Bank, and Pokemon Bank never had exploitative pricing." And you’d be right. Heck, I myself loved Pokemon Bank and have happily taken advantage of the convenience it offered, considering it well worth the price. But this is where Sword & Shield (and, according to dev interviews, all main line Pokemon games going forward) not supporting all past Pokemon makes all the difference.

In the 3DS era, the new Pokemon games always supported all pokemon up to that point. If the Pokemon Company ever did hike the price of Pokemon Bank to something unreasonable, you could always just transfer your pokemon to the latest games & stop using the bank entirely. With Pokemon home, you can't do that. Once your collection is transferred to Pokemon Home, at least some portion of it will always be stuck in the cloud. You will never be able to take it all back. You'll have to keep paying those fees in perpetuity, however high they become, or say goodbye forever to at least some portion of your pokemon.

And while the price for Pokemon Home isn’t yet confirmed, you can already see the groundwork being laid for a significantly higher fee than Pokemon Bank. After all, it doesn’t just transfer pokemon between games, it also lets you trade pokemon online via GTS and Wonder Trade. With that increased functionality, of course we should expect an increased price. It’s only fair, right? Never you mind that GTS and Wonder Trade used to be just part of the game in previous generations, no additional charges needed. And whatever the fee turns out to be, it will be on top of having to pay for Nintendo's internet service to even access Pokemon Home from your Switch to begin with.

Just because Gamefreak *could* exploit the heck out of this new system doesn’t mean they definitely will, but if there's one thing we all should have learned in recent years, it's that corporations, even the ones that make the things we love, are not our friends. You give them an inch and 9 times out of 10 they will take the proverbial mile. Their shareholders will insist on it. Nowhere is this more true than in the realm of AAA video games, where the industry has stumbled from pre-order bonuses to micro transactions to loot boxes, gorging at each table in turn like a ravenous snorlax.

In the past, the Pokemon franchise always seemed to be above stooping to such indignities. After all, between cartoons and films and merchandise, they never needed to, and turning the games into exploitative cash grabs ran a risk of tainting the brand. Why take that risk over a few petty portable games when the big bucks were in children’s card games anyway? Then Pokemon Go proved that the pokemon fandom was more than willing to put up with a little “nickle and dime”ing if meant more pokemon in our lives. With Pokemon Home I fear we’re about to pay the price for that Giratinian bargain.

Maybe I’m wrong. Maybe Pokemon Home isn't just a cynical corporate ploy to turn Pokemon from a series of fun games into a (shudder) "live service". But even if Pokemon Home wasn’t deliberately designed to take your pokemon hostage, that’s still in effect what it’s doing by letting you transfer some pokemon in but not back out. And even if Pokemon Co. never charges more for Home than they did for Bank, that still doesn't mean your pokemon are safe there. Budgets are tight and there are more and more bills and subscriptions eating away at our wallets with each passing day. Who's to say that even an extra $5 a year might be too much for pokemon at some point? If that point ever comes for you, that’s still just too bad for whatever pokemon you have on Home that can't be transferred to whatever games are currently supported.

Again, this is not to bag on Pokemon Sword and Shield. So far they look like fine stand alone Pokemon games. The wild area is a bold step forward, raid battles sound fun, I love all the new pokemon we've seen so far. And after the recent Godzilla movie I'm super hyped for some kaiju sized dynamax pokemon battles. I mean, that's been a dream since the giant tentacruel in the first season opening of the anime! The development team for Pokemon Sword and Shield are clearly talented and committed people who care deeply about the pokemon franchise and its fans, and have worked very hard to bring us the very best games they could - or at least the best games that their corporate bosses would allow them to make.

No, the problem here isn't Pokemon Sword and Shield, it's Pokemon Home - the control it gives the Pokemon Company over our collections, the daggers it hangs over the heads of our pokemon, the syphons in sticks into our wallets.

So if you're still looking forward to Sword and Shield, by all means, buy them! Play them! Enjoy them! But DO NOT BUY Pokemon Home. Do not transfer your collection to it. Not until Gamefreak changes their tune and recommits to supporting all pokemon in these and all future main line pokemon games, so that Pokemon Home can never be used to take your pokemon hostage.

Until then, Pokemon Home simply isn't a safe home for your pokemon.

And for Arceus's sake, those who have been making a stink about this, keep it up. Don't actually harass the developers, don't threaten anyone, don't attack fellow fans who don't see the problem. But keep the pressure up on Gamefreak and Nintendo and the Pokemon Company and, heck, maybe thrown some shade in Warner Bros. direction. As we've seen with online friend play in Mario Maker 2, sometimes the squeaky wheel really does get the grease.

It’s likely too late to fix this before relase, but Gamefreak can patch the needed functionality in at any point after launch. We don't have forever, though, there is a ticking clock. Pokemon Bank still probably has a couple years of life left before it's put out to pasture, along with online support for the 3DS era Pokemon games in general. There’s plenty of time before that for Gamefreak to change their minds, but if this problem isn’t fixed by then Pokemon fans will be faced with a painful choice - either hand our pokemon collections over to the Pokemon Company as hostages, or else leave them to fossilize in our gen 7 games, never to join us on future pokemon adventures again.

Never in his life did Gold squint harder towards a book.

If it’s any consolidation, at least they nail the last one down the T.

“And-- with that said, didn’t teach a guy a damn thing. I swear these people are just a lot more interested in helping these people talk. Dang guessin’ games.”

He should’ve discerned that should’ve been the end result. As always the ideas presented here took the safe, broad overviews as the personal intricacies of a particular pokemon were tossed out the window. As he snaps the hardback covers shut, that noticeable tinge of amusement could be felt radiating from the girl right next to him. Her posture was fixed in a stance many times before, one that allowed her to keep the body stagnant as the mythical energies harnessed by mind and spirit were sharpened like a blade to whetstone.

At the end of the day all that Gold could confirm was that he was a worrywart in every sense of the word. When working with his partner pokemon, one crucial element he wants them to embrace that they’re a part of independence band all riding underneath this one flag of their adventure. If one of them were in the mood to train, train away, same goes for eating and many things they could talk over. So who serves to be the biggest mystery is the modest Timpani; a Gardevoir that carries her share of doubts until the call to action or the rally of their hearts empower her own.

In his personal venture to ensure she could had free reign to do more, ask for more, what mystifies him is this innate modesty as if the things he were doing easily served as enough. On one hand, it’s commendable! Newly formed bonds in his brash party rarely had someone who seemed more shy for requests compared to open, (Togetaro’s adorable moments where he likes sleeping with his head on his lap aside), this worried him.

Timpani naturally noticed this, the efforts he always applied whenever it seemed that anything was a touch off about them. Even with her eye’s close, hands settled in her lap and keeping still as many of the great oaks surrounding them, the delinquent’s emotions were read clear as day.

Yet to share the genuine warmth with a band this close... Compared those darker, colder days, it left her with a considerable shell to crack in the idea of embodying this free feeling as they put it. Issues of the heart sadly couldn’t be solved by dipping into visions of the future-- Not that the resident Togekiss even allowed her to use such an ability. She doesn’t blame him however, the gist of it was was discovered in their misadventures.

She simply enjoyed being by her trainer, a natural bond that the wilderness seldom introduced with the hierarchy of eat or be eaten. Despite the tenacity to make it as far as she had, to grow as strong as she did, what always kept her step near the borders of death and away from realizing her true potential-- had to the stunting lack of this, this meeting all of them as she comes to discover what she truly wish to do.

What the book doesn’t explain one key concept personally tailored Timpani and Timpani alone, her reason for picking by his side as her spot to train and keep her abilities from going stagnant.

It’s by his side that she finds her safe space to steer away her share of inner anxieties, that’s all there is to it.

No need for extra attention, goading or even a prolonged talk. It feels a touch mean for the time being but that serves as the reason for her silence. Her trainer-- no, partner just like Explotaro and the others, what serves to help her along the best is for him to just be himself.

If that takes one small secret then so be it.

The Heart’s Home Chapter 8

A/N: So, it’s been nearly four months since I updated this? Oops. I got busy writing for other fandoms and cosplaying and stuff but here’s this. Our favorite emo boy makes an appearance! :D

Warnings: Vague indications of abusive parents (like nothing explicit this chapter - the parents are referred to as strict not abusive but still); vague food mention (let me know if anything else needs to be tagged!)

Main Four Sides / Other Characters

It takes no time at all to decide on what to eat from the food court and Logan goes over to order as he’s the least likely to forget all three of their orders. Meanwhile, Patton and Roman find a table, settling down and waiting for Logan to return.

While they wait, Roman idly starts humming a Disney song which turns into a game where they each sing a line of a song until one of them messes up or forgets the lyrics. Roman has a tendency to make up words whenever he forgets the line (though it doesn’t happen often - not with Disney songs), the new lines sending Patton into fits of giggles each time.

By the time Logan arrives with their food, Roman and Patton are in stitches of laughter as they’ve abandoned the game in favor of making up the most ridiculous lines sung vaguely to the tune of Disney songs.

Logan simply smiles and sets down their food, distributing napkins and everything before sitting down himself. “I see you two are having fun.” Logan comments and Patton nods eagerly.

“We sure are!” Roman agrees, “Our little sunbeam here is really good at coming up with random lyrics that still rhyme!”

Patton giggles softly as Roman praises him, a wide smile on his face. He wiggles happily in his seat as Logan, in turn, gives him a proud smile.

“Then it seems we have a little poet on our hands,” Logan says and Patton manages to light up even further, becoming an utter ball of sunshine and happiness (not that he wasn’t already)

It’s nearly silent while the three of them eat, each too ravenous to consider taking a break to say something when it could be said once lunch is over.

The next store they head into after finishing lunch is Hot Topic, due to the massive amount of fandom merch inside. Patton rushes over to the Harry Potter stuff the minute he spots them, his eyes wide with excitement and awe.

“There’s so much!” Patton squeals as he looks over all the pieces of jewelry and clothing.

“That’s true!” Roman agrees, looking at Patton with a curious expression. “This does bring to mind that we don’t know what your Hogwarts house is.”

“I haven’t taken the official quiz yet but I’ve always thought I’m either a Gryffindor or a Hufflepuff.” Patton looks closely at a Gryffindor shirt with a grin.

“Hmm, yes. Perhaps a Gryffindor?” Logan comments, looking lost in thought as he puts together what little he knows of Patton’s behavior and past with the common traits of the house. “Gryffindors do have a strong sense of morals as well as being trusting, both of which seem to suit you.”

“Well, why don’t we buy Gryffindor stuff or generic merch until we know for sure?” Roman suggests. “If you don’t turn out to be a Gryffindor, then you could say you got it because it’s Harry’s own house.”

Patton’s eyes light up at that and he nods eagerly. “That sounds great! Though, I’m curious… What are your houses?” Patton glances between them with a curious expression. Logan seems like a Ravenclaw if the way his room was set up is any indication, but Roman… Roman seems like he could belong to almost any of the houses.

“I am a Ravenclaw,” Logan confirms and Patton grins that he got it right. He then looks to Roman curiously, wanting to know since he can’t seem to put a house to him.

“I am a Slytherin.” Roman presses a hand to his chest, leaning forward and almost whispering this to Patton as if it were some big secret.

“Ooh. Cool!” Patton says with wide eyes. That was one he considered but only briefly so it’s kind of a surprise, but a good surprise.

“Surprised, are we? In addition to being ambitious, we Slytherins are creative beings! Not to mention charming and self-reliant.” Roman boasts, gesturing dramatically and nearly hitting something on a nearby display, causing Patton to giggle at his sheepish expression. “Sounds fitting, does it not?”

“Yeah! It does now!” Patton says happily and Roman grins at him.

They start picking out merch for Patton to take home, though neither Logan or Roman is able to resist bringing something small home for themselves. It certainly doesn’t hurt when Patton mentions that they’ll match since they all got their house variant of the same bracelet, making the additional purchase worth it in their eyes.

After grabbing everything Harry Potter they want, Roman and Logan let Patton wander the store to see if there’s anything else he might like. The Pokemon section catches his eye but Patton decides to go there after making a full circle in the store.

The ceiling-high displays of T-shirt designs manage to grab his attention and keep it upward, so much so that he’s not looking where he’s going. A hand reaches out and grabs his shirt causing him to realize that he’d nearly walked into a display without meaning to.

Patton looks to the source who had stopped him, his eyes going wide with awe, even as the kid shrinks back a bit nervously. The kid lets go of his shoulder and draws his hoodie in around himself tighter.

“Hey,” Patton says softly, able to sense how nervous the boy is. “Thanks for stopping me! Would have hated to knock something over. I can be a bit clumsy sometimes.” Patton says, laughing softly with the hope to dispel some of the boy’s nerves.

It seems to work when the other’s lips quirk up slightly and he relaxes a bit, straightening the purple and black hoodie instead of using it as a protective barrier.

“It was no problem. Is this your first time to Hot Topic?” The boy asks, sliding his hands into his hoodie pocket and watching him with ice blue eyes hidden under a layer of black fringe.

“Yeah! It is. It’s really cool here!” Patton says with all the eagerness he usually has, causing the boy to snort softly.

“Yeah. I’ve been shopping here for a while.” The boy says and boy does he look it. Nearly everything he has on, aside from the purple patches on his hoodie, is black much like the clothes surrounding them.

Patton grins at him brightly and he looks a bit surprised at how much Patton seems to enjoy talking to him. Is he used to people not wanting to spend time with him? Patton’s heart breaks at the thought and he decides then and there that he’s going to become this boy’s friend, no matter what.

“I’m Patton! What’s your name?” Patton asks, tilting his head slightly, which the boy can’t help but find cute. He’s like a puppy, all energetic and innocent-like.

“Virgil.” The boy says before making a face slightly as if anticipating how Patton will react. “I know! It’s a kind of weird name, but I like it. It matches my sister’s, at least a little.”

“Wow! That’s such a cool name and it’s awesome that you match with your sis. Are you close to her?” Patton smiles as Virgil brightens a bit at the question and Patton’s positive reaction.

“Yeah. She takes me shopping as much as she can. She likes this store too. It’s kind of where I got it.” Virgil says, a small smile playing at his lips.

Before Patton has a chance to say anything else, he hears Logan call out, “Patton? Did you find anything?”

Patton gives a half-apologetic smile to Virgil, who looks a bit dejected that they’ll have to part so soon. “Yeah - kinda!” Patton calls in response, knowing they’ll be able to find him as the store isn’t that big.

But before they do find him, someone with long black hair approaches them. “Oh, Virgil, who is this?” Her voice is soft and kind, clearly meant to be comforting.

“Hi! I’m Patton! Virgil helped stop me from running into a display.” Patton says with a sheepish grin.

“Yeah, he’ll do that.” The girl says with a fond smile. “It’s nice to meet you, Patton. I’m Violet, his older sister.”

Patton grins up at her, about to say something else when he hears Roman speak from behind him. “Oh, there you are, Patton! I see what you meant by kinda.” Roman laughs softly and Patton smiles at that.

“Yeah. Virgil helped prevent me from running into something while I was distracted by the T-shirt displays.” Patton says and Roman smiles down at Virgil.

“Thank you for assisting, young knight.” Roman bows his head a bit, almost going a bit too far with the dramatics this time. It’s not like he could do a proper bow in the middle of a store like this - though maybe if prompted, he would.

Virgil gives a slightly confused expression but rolls with it, “I couldn’t let him get hurt like that.” Virgil says with a small shrug. He can’t help but bring his arms up around himself, feeling anxious that Roman would respond negatively, even if he logically knows that wouldn’t happen.

Roman just smiles at that before turning and talking a bit to Violet, allowing the attention to fall away from the anxious boy. Virgil lets out a soft sigh in relief and looks at Patton. “Is he always like that?”

Patton giggles and nods, “Yeah. He’s so dramatic about, like, everything but it’s nice.”

“I bet...” Virgil says wistfully. He can’t help but feel a bit envious of Patton in that moment. He can easily imagine how nice it would be to live with Roman as a caretaker, much better than his own current living situation.

Patton notices the slight change in his mood and tilts his head as he figures out a way to brighten Virgil’s expression, not liking the sad and forlorn expression currently on his face. “Hey, Virgil. What is a cat’s favorite color?”

Virgil furrows his eyebrows at the sudden question. “Uh, I don’t know. What is it?”

“Purr-ple,” Patton says with a grin. Virgil covers his mouth as he lets out a soft laugh and Patton’s eyes brighten with delight that it worked.

Patton keeps telling Virgil cat jokes until there’s no trace of that sad expression on his face. When they look back at Roman and Violet, both of them realize that Logan’s arrived, though Virgil looks slightly confused as to who he is.

“That’s Logan. And the one you met earlier is Roman.” Patton explains upon seeing his confusion and Virgil nods.

“Are they your dads?” Virgil asks softly, not wanting anyone other than Patton to hear this.

“Yeah, I guess so. They recently adopted me so I’m still adjusting to having them as parents but yeah.” Patton says and Virgil’s eyes widen, filling with a mix of emotions that Patton can’t quite read. Is relief one of those emotions?

“That’s chill. They seem nice.” Virgil says and Patton easily agrees, talking a bit about his experiences with them so far while Virgil listens to every word.

While they talk, the adults are also talking amongst themselves. It started as basic introductions and has now moved onto talking about the boys. They learn that Patton and Virgil are going to be going to the same school this fall and that they’ll be in the same year.

“That’s good. I was worried that Patton wasn’t going to have any friends at this school.” Roman says, “But it looks like he and Virgil are on their way to being friends.”

Violet smiles and nods, “I know. Virgil usually keeps to himself but it’ll be good for him to have a friend his age.”

“Maybe we should schedule them to hang out over the summer so they can grow closer before the year actually starts?” Logan suggests, already pulling out his phone to exchange phone numbers.

“I mean, if he’s in my care for the day, then definitely,” Violet says, looking a tiny bit uncomfortable. “Our parents probably won’t let him go to a friend’s house, though, they’re a bit...strict.”

Something about that last word sounds off to all three of them as if it’s obvious that it’s not exactly the correct word to describe their parents. But Logan and Roman don’t say anything about it as it’s not their place to, they’ve only just met the two after all. They can’t pry into their home life just yet.

Logan and Violet exchange numbers before they all turn to Patton and Virgil, finding the boys still chatting softly. “Virgil,” Violet says softly to get her brother’s attention. “I think it’s time we let them return to their shopping. We still have stuff to get as well before we go home.”

Virgil nods, looking a bit dejected at having to leave Patton so soon, not when he’s found someone that seems to like him for him that’s not related to him. Patton notices and smiles at him. “Awe, it’s okay, Virge! I bet we’ll see each other again soon!”

“That’s right. You boys will be going to the same school this year - you might even share classes.” Logan says, hoping to cheer Virgil up. “Besides, you might get to spend time together while you’re still on break.”

Virgil nods, taking a deep breath to calm himself. “Okay. See you soon, Patton.” He says before walking over and taking his sister’s hand, letting her walk them away.

“See ya!” Patton hollers after him and turns to Logan and Roman, still smiling but it’s obvious that he misses the boy even after knowing him for such a short time. “Now...I was thinking about something Pokemon next?”

Logan and Roman both nod and allow Patton to lead them to the Pokemon section, letting him pick what he wants before they pay for everything. Then it’s onwards to another store.

According to YouTube’s stats, the biggest number of viewers is from the United States (around 25%), followed closely by Saudi Arabia (around 23%), then followed by Emirates, then South America, but Fatma cannot clearly remember which country had the most viewers there

Good news: a couple companies did get in contact with Eating Stars to talk about sponsoring the show or even co-producing, but nothing has been decided yet

Fatma seems to be in burnout mode atm. She wants to get back into Emara but not right away. She also has other ideas she wants to work on in the future She’s in no hurry to throw herself back into the hectic life of producing (She wore several hats and did several jobs during the making of Emara so it was VERY draining)

Fatma is actually considering something of a spin-off mini story for Dhabian, to the interviewer’s delight

A potential future comic would be to further explore the world of Emara and for fun side stories, NOT to move the main story forward. Main story will exclusively be in the cartoon only

She didn’t think Dhabian would be so popular, so as episode 5 loomed she grew more anxious of people’s reactions. She didn’t expect him to be popular especially since she had a lot of difficulty writing him and defining his character. Interviewer thinks that’s weird, because Dhabian is easily the character that raises the most questions and thus is the most interesting story-wise

What are their genders?” “The Saudian and Palestinian are girls, the Yemeni and Kuwaiti are boys. And the Saudian character is Jeddan, specifically. They have the coolest accent.”

“Is the absence of a romantic subplot intentional in Emara?”“Yes, it is. I hate romantic subplots. Furthermore, Emara as a character doesn’t look for it.”

“Will there be a comic book for Emara?”“Possibly, and we do have an Art of Emara book in the works.”

“Is Moza a STEM or technical student?”“No, she didn’t go to college.”“Oh, then just high school?”“No, she dropped out of high school.”

“What’s one of the most challenging things you faced while in production?”“Nothing goes according to your first plan.”

☆Japan Trip 2019 Day 1 Part 1: RE:Start☆

こんにちわ、ひさしぶり

...erm hello it’s been a while. Nearly a year and a half if I’m not mistaken.

It’s been...one heck of a year. 2018. I took a first step that was beyond my wildest dreams. And it only got more...wondrous. I met a longtime friend for the first time for an unforgettable night. I broke out of my shell and had the pleasure to meet and play Pokemon with people I had never met and they were some of the nicest people I had ever met. I got to meet the man who helped me feel a little less misunderstood in the world and tell him how much his work has helped me. And cried into his shoulders I even got to see a childhood hero sing right in front of me and sing a song that just...carries a lot of emotions for me.

It was something. Last year.

But it wasn’t all roses

I started to...fall back into bad habits. Old patterns started to show up again. I started hurting those that were just trying to help. Making decisions I knew would make me unhappy. Starting to choose to be lonely rather than be alone for my own good. Making the wrong people happy.

But I fought on. Because shortly after I returned from my last trip, it was decided that I would be returning to my happy place. The place where I took my first step. A place where all of my dreams came true and more. It was decided that I, along with some friends, would be returning to Japan for Spring 2019. For some of them it would be an exciting first time: they had never been so it was going to be something memorable. For others, it was a chance to try out things that they missed out on last time. And in part it was the same for me as well.

But it was more than just that. For me, it was the next step. It was time to see if I really had made any meaningful progress. If I had really changed for the better in any way since the last time I was here. It was...as odd as it is to say, a reality check.

And so despite a rough few months leading up to the trip, the time finally arrived. It was time to take off and return to Japan. Let’s a go-go~★

So unfortunately as soon as we boarded the plane, it was announced that the plane had broken down in some fashion. They tried their best at fixing it on the spot but sadly it just did not happen. So we had to leave and it was announced that our next plane would arrive five hours later at soonest. This made a lot of people disgruntled and at the time I wasn’t bothered by it. Oh boy was that a mistake in retrospect.

At any rate I had planned on eating the lunch provided on the plane but since that didn’t happen, we were all given basically free lunches by the airline a la discount coupons that basically covered full meals from pretty much all of the surrounding restaurants. So I ate, played some Pokemon Platinum (starting Piplup was a...mistake? I don’t know I’ll let you know as I make more progress) and eventually, despite the chaotic scramble, we were all boarded and ready to take off for Japan.

Ok this time for sure. I hope >_<;

Our...dinner? Breakfast? Time was a super messed concept for me at this point. being up for practically 16+ hours and running off of...maybe one nap. Send help x_x

But eventually, we made itttttttt

I did it! I made it to Japan! Things can only start getting better from this point on!

...and again, if only things were that easy =x

So let’s start off with something I realized the moment we landed: my lodgings were fairly far away. Like about an hour or so away from the airport. I had stayed with them previously so I recalled that they had curfew hours. Knowing that, I started to change over my SIM card that my favorite recommended to me and my other friends so that I would have data in Japan so I could contact my lodgings and tell them that I’d be running late.

Turns out the SIM card was not. I repeat. NOT. Compatible with my phone. No fault of anyone’s really, my phone and the SIM card just didn’t play well. Everyone else had a grand time with the SIM card so if you’d like to have a nice simple SIM card, delivered to your house prior to your travels, not to mention coming with a bunch of free boons, why not give it a chance? It was a shame it didn’t work out but now it’s all water under the bridge so all is well ☆

I immediately start panicking. It was around 11 PM, I’m still in line for customs, I have no immediate access to data (and therefore directions), the vast majority of all of the places selling SIMs and Pocket WiFis were closed, and even if I rung up directions, by the time I got out of airport customs with all of my stuffs, I would basically be catching the last trains the whole entire way until I got to my lodgings at approximately 1 AM.

Basically I needed access to train maps right away and I needed to not miss any of the trains I needed to catch. Otherwise I’d be out of luck.

Push came to shove and I decided to start roaming on my phone. It was a costly option but dammit this was an emergency and I’m on vacation. I have money to burn. Sort of. >~<

I hastily called up maps, navigated my way from the metro up to the Skytree line, and with the luck of the Gods, the stars aligned and as I started to make my way to the last train, I was told by a friendly officer that the last train I needed to catch was stalled for just a few minutes just to accommodate for any remaining stragglers. I thanked the officer and rushed my butt up the platform to a completely packed train. Running up the platform with no room to comfortably squeeze in, I thought to myself “screw it”, hauled my luggage, used it as a means of opening up space (and since this is a normal affair for Japanese subways, they immediately made enough space for me and my luggage, bless) and I was able to get onto my last train in time. I also managed to get in touch with the Manager of my lodgings and he told me he’d be up waiting since he was still expecting customers to come in anyway. Super blesss.

I pull into a familiar sight. Nisharai station. The last time I was here it was all unfamiliar territory. Now walking down those steps felt like re-visiting an old friend, and despite being in a rush, I still had enough time to really be in the moment. I was back.

After getting setup at my lodgings and quietly putting my stuff away, I sadly realized that I had no chance to really have dinner. Plus I was still fairly tired at this point so I quickly hopped into the showers and hit the hay. It was a very long day. But in the end I made it. I’m back in Japan. And it was time to start going down a very long list of personally important things that I wanted to do get to this time around

Good morning Nishiarai. It has been a long time my old friend★

Despite everything I didn’t sleep very well. A combination of jet lag and a general sense of fatigue that just wouldn’t go away no matter long I slept had me...groggy at best. Nonetheless, I somehow pulled myself out of my slumber; after last night’s mishaps, I was ready to make up for all of it. I was going to give myself the right start that I was hoping for since I got here. So after ordering myself my pocket WiFi from EConnect (bless their hearts they are amazing), I knew what the first thing I was going to do was. It was one of my more fonder memories from last time and this was going to mark the start of a good day

For this trip, I decided that I am going to try out more coffee places this time around. Kohikan really surprised me last time and opened my world to just how delicious properly made coffee could be and I was looking forward to seeing what some of the other coffee shops in Japan had to offer. But more on that later~

After having a nice hearty breakfast and a delicious cup of coffee, my next stop would be a Lawson Mini-Stop. Which is basically a Lawsons but smaller? I couldn’t quite tell you the difference to be honest. But at any rate my reason for visiting one is because....

How do I work this darned thing

This is Loppi. Long story short, the convenience store chain Lawson has a system where you could order tickets for a variety of events: concerts, sports games, cultural events, you name it. As long as you’re able to navigate the Lawson website or the Loppi terminal, you could place your order, input some information and a confirmation pin, print out your ticket, pay the price printed on the ticket, and voila: you have yourself a ticket to the event you wanted to attend☆ Sadly my reading skills were not yet at a point where I could confidently navigate the terminal but thankfully there was a dummy option of scanning a given QR code (which I had) and that made it all the more easier to get my ticket. A ticket for what was probably one of the most important and memorable nights of my trip.

Last year I went to go see MAMY live, one of, if not my most favorite Japanese band out right now. This year, the stars aligned and I was given the opportunity to see not one but two of my favorite bands live: SECONDWALL and AliA. When this live was announced I could not believe my eyes and while making reservations wasn’t easy, I still made the attempt: I wasn’t going to miss out on an opportunity of a lifetime

To be honest, once I had paid for the ticket I felt a huge sense of relief: I really wanted to have the opportunity to see the stars in my sky once more and have the chance to tell these people just how important their music was to me. Now all that was left to do was hope that everything would turn out fine on the day of the live. Now with that burden off my shoulders, I took off with a hop, step and jump towards my next stop☆

Last time I was here I made a memorable visit to Kiyosumi-Shirakawa on a whim and it was arguably one of the more memorable and important parts of that trip. I had however had after the fact that it was known for housing some fairly top notch coffee shops, and so I decided to try one of them out and see what it was like. But I there were also a few places I wanted to visit first, so it was time to get back to what I loved doing best

Volbeat! This is one of the more odd regionals, currently only available on the East Hemisphere. Now to find some Farfetch’d and Zangoose★

There was a school trip happening around the main area. I didn’t stick around long so it wouldn’t be awkward

After walking around the park and playing Pokemon GO for a bit, I wanted to revisit the gardens to see if any seasonal flowers popped up this time around (there was nothing the last time I was there; unsurprising considering that it was winter when I last visited =x)

As tradition calls for, I...relaxed and reflected in this garden for a bit. While I didn’t hit as much of a “eureka” as I did last time, I came to realize that despite all of my recent setbacks that maybe...I was a bit on the right path. I remembered what it was that made me happy and however heavy the burdens may be back home, I should not lose sight of what’s important to me and continue to try for what makes me happy in a meaningful way. Being here made me happy in a meaningful way. Changed me for the better. I had come this far: not just by taking the first step but also thanks to the support of my most precious friends and family that have been there for both of my happiest and saddest moments. I remembered what drove me to come here in the first place and how it resulted in me meeting one of the most inspirational people I’ve ever had the pleasure to encounter.

A singer who upon hearing her voice, hearing her sing...inspires me to get up and try again. And again. And while that may not be the deepest reason out there, music has been a very important part of my life, expressing everything I never could. Expressing my happiness where words failed and expressing my sadness when it was too hard to say anything.

And that’s a lot of the reason why I travel halfway across the world, to visit Japan: to meet the people whose music have helped me so much when nothing else could. To meet the people that inspire me, tell them how amazing they are and...maybe try to see and understand what inspires them to be the the way that they are

To hopefully tap into some of that inspiration and...someday hopefully become someone that can help and inspire others in a meaningful way. At least what’s I hope for (๑˃̵ᴗ˂̵) ☆

Feeling a little more peaceful inside, it was time to move forward. For now it is time for coffee! But that part of the journey is best saved for a different time. There’s quite a bit more from that day to share so I will save that for a different time

My Pokemon Theory

The Pokemon world is basically our world, but with Pokemon. Every plant, animal (yes, they just aren't shown much because Pokemon are the main focus), fungus, protozoan, bacteria, and archaea alive on Earth today also exists in the Pokemon world. I don't see why animals wouldn't be in Pokemon if plants and humans are all over the place. Pokemon can eat real animals, and all of the normal Earth living things. Pokemon do compete with the real animals, but less than anyone would expect. For geography, it's basically the same as our own world, with places renamed. Though Game Freak has yet to discover most of it, only Japan, New York City, France, and Hawaii have been discovered so far. And because of the diverse terrain of this Earth, there are likely thousands of undiscovered Pokemon species in never-before seen regions, maybe the Fakemon can fit in there. There are possibly more species of Pokemon than even shown in those already discovered regions, due to the anime and games having limited space. The natural history of the Pokemon world is also very similar to that of Earth, with very similar geologic time periods (like a Pokemon Mesozoic), and these geologic time periods hold even more undiscovered Pokemon. Think about it, 99.9% of all species on Earth are extinct, yet only a few Pokemon are really modeled off prehistoric animals. We don't have much Pokemon based off prehistoric Cenozoic animals, or prehistoric Paleozoic animals, where are they? The myths of Arceus and the Creation Trio creating the Earth are probably just myths, believed by many, humans coming from Pokemon is likely a myth too; but they are widely believed. The technology of the Pokemon world is possibly even more advanced than on Earth, but not to the point where something can cure all Pokemon, though that's going to be a possibility very soon in their timeline. Pokemon, the creatures, are like real animals, they do die and most do have to eat and poop. They mostly have the same structure as the real life animals they are based off (with some exceptions, I think bug types have vertebrate organs because of how big they are), just with superpowers and possibly bigger brains. They are more intelligent than their real life animal counterparts, not by much so not much to destroy them. Some are easier to take care than others, and taking care of them would be like taking care of their real life counterparts for some and idk the others. There could be more than one of each legendary Pokemon, they're just hard to find so it's assumed there's only one. Male Mandibuzz and Male Jynx, and Female Hitmonchan probably exist; they're just so hard to find. Pokemon need to get medical care at the Pokemon Center. They could get vaccinated, spayed or neutered (in the games just don't let them breed), surgery, x-rays, those Elizabethan collars (it's confirmed in the anime with Litten). Some Pokemon would sadly have more info on their medical care than others, so when most Pokemon species are very sick to a certain point they have to be euthanized, even though the thought of it is gross. All Pokemon don't get the same medicine, contrary to popular belief, though some potions have been made to try to cure all Pokemon. Some Pokemon can't eat some foods, for example don't feed Lillipup chocolate it could die. The Pokemon world is perhaps most different from the real world in its morals, and this has been confirmed Junichi Masuda. He said that the Pokemon world has no "global warming, water shortages, or any other disaster; instead a world where people work together to eliminate or lessen these problems." This is probably very true, I find this to be one of the most important things in a world especially with very special and blessed creatures. The games and anime have a limited amount of space to them, so not much could be shown. The games just have Pokemon battling, and that's it. But, in my opinion, Pokemon is way deeper than at the surface. It's really a huge world after all, and more like Earth than most would believe, albeit still very different.

Episode 4 and we're still getting flashbacks to the first episode.

Ash had a chik-fil-a cow suit just ready for that pun.

Pikachu decides to take a nap even though just a second ago he was walking with Ash just fine.

All bug pokemon worship Misty.

Pidgey's Gust attack in episode one sends Ash flying, Pidgeotto's Gust attack barely moves Weedle at all. Ash’s Pidgeotto is a bitch by comparison.

Samurai bug catcher guy was trained by the blade and tips fedora mightily.

How did he even hear about Ash to begin with?

Why does he keep pulling a rubber sword on people as his way of greeting them? What kind of manners?

Pidgeotto just whipped Weedle without getting hit once, but is somehow too tired to fight.

Pinsir somehow has compound-eyes, an ability not introduced until Gen 3.

Ever sending a Metapod into battle, ever.

Kudos for showing Metapod just getting cut in half though, that's rad.

He legit said Metapod using Harden was clever...that's all it can do.

Everyone rips on Ash so hard, like he could've just stopped the entire swarm of Beedrill from kidnapping that Metapod.

Team Rocket voice actors changed.

Ash thinks that if he runs past the Beedrill they'll just forget he was the one that fucked Weedle up and fight Jesse and James.

Metapod doesn't wanna go in the Pokeball because Ash didn't die for him. What a guy.

Ash falls over nothing just to throw Metapod and have a reflective moment on something that he didn't even do. Character development made easy.

Metapod fucks that Beedrill's world up for life and then evolves into Butterfree, leaving me with ruined expectations on how long it takes Pokemon to evolve for the rest of the series.

Apparently it takes a week for Metapod to evolve into Butterfree, what have Ash and Misty been doing for the last week?

How does Ash just know all these moves his Pokemon have immediately upon them evolving?

Sleep Powder doesn't even have that great of accuracy but hits everything in the forest basically.

Apparently his Metapod evolving makes him a true master in the eyes of rubber sword guy even though it's literally just a matter of time. You could leave Metapod in a puddle for a week and it'll still evolve.

Team Rocket somehow made the paper tank into Kakuna suits and hung themselves from the Kakuna tree? These are the antagonists.

Five episodes in and this theme song still jams so hard.

This is the episode that begins Jesse and James' hole digging fetish.

Team Rocket step in their own pitfall trap...I mean...come on.

Flint sells rocks...he sells rocks.

Another Nurse Joy, thus begins the vast network of identical twins that all took the same profession.

Ash stares at Misty's ass, my guy.

Snap on lights, classy move, Brock. Brock’s Gym is complete with rock terrain that easily snaps together.

The weird jump Brock did seemed unnecessary, why even have those stairs?

Let's be honest, the first time we saw Onix we thought it was the strongest thing ever.

Onix uses Bind before Brock gave it the order.

Ash's aim with his returns is ass, but he blames it on Onix.

Flint takes Ash to spy on Brock and his ten younger siblings, that's not weird.

Brock has ten brothers and sisters, giggity.

Deadbeat dad and dead mom, slow down there Pokemon.

Let's hook your Pikachu up to a power plant to power it up. Pokemon logic.

River is dry making the power plant not operational, but let's not say that until after we're here.

Ash just let's the dirty hobo hook shit up to his Pikachu without even saying a word.

Misty finally says something intelligent but Ash says he's going to go all by himself (While getting help from Flint)

Ash says, "If I can take it you can take it" while walking on a stairmaster and his Pikachu is having a power plant put into it's cheeks.

Gust has literally changed every time it's been used in this show so far.

Flying is weak against rock, so my Geodude is gonna grab at your Pidgeottos’ feet until it faints.

Pikachu's random discharge sets all the lights on fire, but we just ignore that.

Ash wants to battle to the death as Pikachu fainted but he wants to continue.

Oh, the fire actually mattered after all, leading to some Deus Ex Aqua letting Pikachu fuck Onix up.

Ash has 10 people on him and thinks it's all in his head. He's actually crazy.

Brock's character changed so drastically in this one episode. He went from calling Pikachu a nerd to being a softie in 10 minutes.

Brock wants to be the best at making Pokemon get it in, and enlists Ash to do that for him.

Cold spaghetti for breakfast and cereal for dinner, these kids really do need a father.

Agrees that he has to pay Misty back, then tries to run away from her.

Why were Team Rocket even in this episode?

Zubat. Just. Zubat.

Wow I hate this scientist immediately.

The lights hanging from the cave are fucking up all the Pokemon, so instead of just pulling them down or turning them off, Seymour the Scientist just watches.

These poems are almost as bad as the ring from the telephone.

Pokemon are aliens, Moon Stone spaceship.

Clefairy is holding a Moon Stone but isn't evolving?

Seymour stops Ash from catching a Pokemon under the pretense "I'm sure you understand" but there's literal no context to what Ash is supposed to understand.

Ash understands anyway.

"Trouble?" Team Rocket announces as Ash triggered their trap card.

Random "You can't join us" thrown at Ash even though he never said anything about joining them.

Brock randomly catches a Zubat offscreen even though he's only a Rock-type trainer. Your ploy to get me to like that shitstorm of a Pokemon won't work.

Misty just throws a Pokeball in the water. Sure Staryu may like it, but that was a fast moving river, that thing is gone.

Ash has never seen Pokemon food.

Seymour and Ash both decide to eat Pokemon food.

Pikachu is the Naruto of Pokemon. Makes friends with everything by just saying his name over and over.

This one particular Clefairy was holding the almighty fragment of Moon Stone that made the thing glow and cause the rest of the Clefairy to show up.

Clefairy rave.

Ash doesn't understand Clefairy, but understands Pikachu because it's "his Pokemon".

Ash can only understand 90% of Pikachu's words, the rest must be done in a game of shitty charades.

Clefairy worship and pray to the Moon Stone, causing Seymour to lose his shit over space travel.

Seymour the Scientist just turned into Velma, but if she wasn't hot or interesting but instead the devil.

Onix versus Ekans results in a "size doesn't matter" joke from Jesse.

Jesse and James are able to move this MASSIVE meteor with no one noticing or making a noise.

I'm really confused on how much of each other's language Pokemon and people know.

So many Pokemon know Counter in the show.

Mass Metronome is just one of those "Put your hands in the air" moments.

Misty continues to have inner ear problems as moving her head back and forth slowly makes her dizzy.

Sing-Song Seymour is still a cunt.

The Clefairy Metronome explodes the Moon Stone into smaller Moon Stones, only now making some of them evolve into Clefable? I can’t follow what’s happening.

Secondary Clefairy/Clefable rave entices Seymour to live with them.

Postcards from space comment.

Why does Gary make fun of Ash here? Didn't they only meet once and for like, less than a minute? What makes them rivals, they barely know each other exist.

Webcomic Whimsy: Modest Medusa (WW:MM)

Welcome to the Woohooligan Weekly Webcomic Whimsy! I've given a couple of interviews in the past, but this is my first experience with reviewing. Synopsis: (from TV Tropes - there doesn't appear to be an "about" page on the site) On the night before Christmas, Jake comes home and finds that the toilet has overflowed and flooded his bedroom. While moving his stuff to a different room, he finds a gorgon child hiding in the closet. Because she cannot return to the land she came from, Jake and his niece Marah have to take care of her.

Jake's work on Modest Medusa is a little hard to place. The art style and even the writing on most pages feel to me like it's trying to be a g-rated, all-ages work. But before you go thinking it's a "children's book", you have to know that it also contains scenes of "graphic cartoon violence" (if that's a thing) and more than a few jokes that only adults will understand. I say "graphic cartoon violence" because yes, characters lose arms and eyes in the fighting, but the visual style never changes. This means that when you're seeing a severed arm with a bone in the middle, it still LOOKS like a chlidren's book rather than a horror movie. I think the strip on the right epitomizes the overall feel of Modest Medusa rather well.

The archive of Modest Medusa is pretty deep, I think it's over a thousand, but it's impossible to get a reasonable estimate of it's size because of the navigation on the site. I've learned through some casual digging that it apparently bounced around a bit on various hosting before getting the site it has now. I read that it was originally on DeviantArt, then another hosting site I didn't recognize before The Duck (then Drunk Duck) all before finally landing in the WordPress site at ModestMedusa.com. Some of these earlier strips are still black and white if you use the mirror on the Duck. Jake still updates the Duck as a mirror in parity with the official site, so you wouldn't miss anything by reading it there.

Like most webcomics, the art in Modest Medusa improves over time. The art in these first two pages was a good start, although it's obviously not as refined as his current work.

The fourth page here is the introduction of a running gag: Chocodiles. I had never heard of them. Apparently they're chocolate-coated Twinkies. I've seen a few episodes of American Dad, but not enough to know these things were described as Roger's favorite snack. I suspect Modest Medusa uses them more often than American Dad -- in the first couple chapters they're pretty constantly mentioned.

I never did see the gorgon given a name. I did see at least one page where Jake's neice calls out "Medusa" while looking for her, but I suspect that's being used in the generic way that most people use medusa as an improper noun, meaning gorgon. I suspect that was the intention in the title as well, using the less common definition of "modest" meaning "a small amount", as in "yes, there's a medusa, but it's just a little medusa." :P You might think that's the reason Jake's not turning to stone -- to be honest I'm not sure. I've read through what I think is almost two chapters and I've seen one character turn to stone after a bite from her snakes, but it's unclear if that's what caused it.

Obviously the relationship between Jake and Medusa had to evolve over time and it does... You just couldn't have a long story about the two of them with her hissing all the time. And the characters having fingers becomes a regular occurance about half-way through the first chapter. I'm sure the characters were happy they could use their phones. :P

The first panel of this next strip shows one of my few criticisms about Modest Medusa. Even now, Jake could improve the lettering. In this first panel the first dialogue balloon is pointed straight at Jake's neck, giving the impression that Jake is claiming to "come from a mystical land." Or maybe the collar of his shirt comes from that land... it certainly would explain the design.

And here's where it becomes obvious that Modest Medusa isn't meant to be a children's book. While there's nothing in the art or writing that you wouldn't want a child exposed to, this just isn't a joke they would understand. Admittedly, Jake has a graphic at the top of his site that describes it as being rated "T for teen".

In this first chapter, Medusa's lack of experience with our world is a frequent foil for comedy.

The climax of the first chapter* is a bloody fight sequence. This is likely to come as a surprise to anyone having read from the beginning, given the children's-book-style illustration, the description of Medusa as "a four year old", the overall slice-of-life-comedy tone, and the fact that the rest of the chapter is devoid of any violence at all, save some hissing and a solitary slap-in-the-face. It is pretty unusual to see a hundred pages of straight slice-of-life comedy suddenly punctuated by something more like Friday the 13th. I could see some readers describing it as a pleasant surprise. I personally enjoyed the sequence and the contrast between it and the rest of the chapter only occurred to me after I finished reading.

This fight is preceded by a phone call from Medusa's mother, demanding that she come home, and informing her she's going to kill Medusa's new friends.

At first I thought the use of that last dialogue balloon was bad-form, with the standard for comics being to avoid the characters describing things the reader can already see on the page. It's the same as it is for TV and movies, you never have a character say "put my shoes on" when the audience can already see that she's doing that. On further reflection however, I think Jake made the right decision on that last panel. With all that blood and without that exclamation, I think it's likely that a lot of readers might have thought it was a horse being slaughtered in a really unpleasant way. So that dialogue eliminates the confusion, which I think is needed in this case.

Also... did the horse travel to our world from the land of Yeld like Medusa; through the toilet? :P

Toilet horses are tough!

After the unicorn fight, the first chapter ends with Jake being abducted... through the toilet, natch. This is the obvious lead in to the second chapter sequel. Jake apparently took that comic-making class that teaches you end a book on a cliffhanger. :P

While I can't give Jake too much grief for ending the first chapter that way, because that actually is the better way to do it, I did have one issue so far: the first chapter was awful slow. At this point I've read through a hundred strips and I know virtually nothing about Jake or his family. He has a neice named Mara, he likes video games (Pokemon in particular) and he eats Chocodiles. That's pretty much the extent of my knowledge of the Jake character (as distinct from the Jake author), and it feels pretty thin for being an entire book. It also feels like a lot of those strips in the first chapter were just filler for it's own sake, like an entire strip devoted to Medusa opening the first Chocodile, or an entire strip devoted to standing in line at the store waiting to buy the new Pokemon game, with narry a joke or word balloon in sight. True, it shows that nobody in the store is reacting to the gorgon in the room, but I feel like the dialogue on the following pages conveys that message already.

The pace of the story improves notably in the second chapter, despite the fact that we're still not really learning anything about the heroes. Some of their other friends and family members are introduced and then promptly abandoned while Mara and Medusa begin their quest through the looking-toilet to save uncle Jake.

Once in the land of Yeld, the story takes on a much more overtly fantasy-adventure tone.

And there's the occasional surrealism, like Medusa's snakes eating her stars. You're right, you shouldn't let them do that, otherwise they'll come to expect it and start demanding blue diamonds and green clovers.

It occurs to me that "where are your sparkles" and "it's a secret to everyone" are pretty subtle (obscure?) pop-culture references. While I understood those jokes, it makes me wonder if I'm not missing a lot of other jokes throughout the series. That's not a good or a bad thing, just something I noticed.

While I've never been a fan of Calvin and Hobbes, I suspect that Jake Richmond is and that the influence of Watterson on Jake's work is fairly apparent to fans of Calvin and Hobbes. Any Modest Medusa readers out there want to confirm or deny?

So if you're looking for a combination of absudity and slice-of-life comedy, with a liberal dose of fantasy-adventure and a smidgen of pop-culture, I think you'll like Modest Medusa.

Summer Anime* 2017 Lightning Review

*Just the shows I watched, of course

I’m leaving out shows that I dropped, so if you remember me talking about a show but it’s not listed here, I was either bored by it or just didn’t enjoy it anymore after a certain point, and that’s really all there is to say~!

Reminder that there are spoilers in the reviews below

18if I didn’t quite get what they were trying for with this show until about half-way through. This felt like more of an excuse to explore and experiment stylistically than to actually tell a story at most times, but because of that it got to tell lots of varied and unusual-for-anime stories, including an episode exploring the culture of the hearing impaired/deaf population of Japan, which was really cool. The ending just ended up being kind of wank, but since there wasn’t really that big of a reveal set up, it wasn’t that disappointing. If you want to see some interesting visual styles and some cool Twilight Zone style reveals, you might give this show a shot. 7/10

Action Heroine Cheer Fruits This was quietly one of the better shows of the season. It had the same framework story-wise as Love Live; girls end up banding together to save a building from being demolished and help support the town by buying into the newest fad sweeping the nation. Only instead of idol groups, it’s “local heroes”, live stage shows portraying sentai and superhero like characters beating villains with the goods and virtues representing the town they’re from. The girls are all really cute, even the really cliché ojou-sama~ Shimura had her moments. I will also give this show all the praise in the world for not only including a handicapped character but also making her a central figure to the plot. The ending of the finale where she is included in the show after working behind the scenes for so long tugged on my heart strings a bit. Plus, there is a not so vague relationship between Misaki and Roko, with Roko probably being my favorite character in the show. It’s not as moe as Love Live and the comedy isn’t as quality as something like Yuru Yuri or Wakaba Girl, but it’s still a great show. 9/10

Aho Girl The comedy reminded me of a mixture of Saiki-kun and Plustic Nee-san; very off the wall slapstick kind of stuff, but still really clever and you could tell there was a lot of love put into this show. I don’t know that I would say I laughed the most while watching this show this season (more on that later), but I would say it’s the comedy of the season for sure. Was really easy to forget the episodes were only 12 minutes long because it was just jam-packed with gags. Definitely a must watch for 2017. 10/10 Boku no Hero Academia 2nd Season I definitely feel like the girl characters are getting more screen time in season 2, which is always good. I still don’t see what people see in Bakugo, even after reading ahead in the manga, I don’t feel like his attitude is “redeemed” or “explained” much at all. Hero Killer Stain definitely stole the show; he’s so grungy and RAW, and Go Inoue delivers Stain’s final lines so passionately he almost had me convinced he was the real deal. Like I said earlier, I’ve read ahead, so some of the moments to come are exciting, but there are also some that I can feel will take up waaay too much time, or even have filler put in, which I’m not looking forward to as shounen manga stretches things out enough as it is. Will certainly get another season, it’s so popular it would be stranger for it to not get a third one. 7/10

Centaur no Nayami It’s been a while since I have read the manga, but I feel like they got many of the voices down exactly the way I imagined them. However, it also felt like there was a lot of stuff that was anime-original, or at least were out of order. As much as I can remember, this was the only anime this season with a confirmed-in-show homosexual couple, and while the explanation to the kids in the scene left a lot to be desired, considering the overlying theme of “zero-tolerance tolerance” towards discrimination, felt kind of odd, and felt like maybe the studio made it a little more conservative than it was in the manga. It was a shame that a lot of the everyday life moments from the manga were cut out in favor of more tropes per minute. What I’m trying to say is that while the show is good, it isn’t the best representation of the manga that it could have been in my opinion. 8/10

Classroom of the Elite This show was almost trash, but was saved by the revelation of Ayanokoji’s true self at the very end. Right as Horikita is seemingly spilling her tsundere guts out to him as well. This, in a similar vein to Kakegurui, was really unintentionally comedic to me. There was zero tension at all, mostly because you could see where it was going in most cases. I think it was a bit cheap to have the solution to how Ayanokoji would win the survival test come from a rule they never mentioned about the classes losing points for guessing other class leaders wrong. It would be like having a multiple choice question A/B/C/D and then saying the answer was E. I also think Kushida was a dud. Every time she tried to buddy up or get closer to Ayanokoji, I kept waiting for him to say “At the risk of you blackmailing me again, I agree.” Especially when she asked him who would he choose between her and Horikita it’s like... gee, do I pick the super effective mark I just procured or the girl who has blackmail on me and is asking me this? I wonder... A show that thinks very highly of itself unjustly. 5/10

Clione no Akari This was kind of bizarre series; it was pretty obvious from the beginning that a certain character would die or was already dead. It felt like a series aimed at like 10 year olds, in an effort to teach them about bullying through entertainment. I don’t really have much to say about it, it had an obvious message with a miserable ending, I’d say pass on it. 5/10 Gamers! I’m not as enamored with this series as most people seem to be, but it has it’s charms to be sure. Karen and Aguri are really great, and in a close third Uehara-kun, but I’m not a fan of Chiaki and Keita, which is kind of bad considering they are the ones we’re meant to be rooting for. I was also pretty shocked at how well received this was considering it is almost entirely a love-pentagon rom-com; any other series with a love triangle or more seems to be met with “ugh, why does this shit have to be in here.” I suppose if it’s meant to be poking fun at the trope as a whole, then I can see it, but if that’s the case then it was so blunt I immediately dismissed it as being too likely to be the case. Karen is probably my fav in the show, and I was kind of annoyed that the rest of the actual game club didn’t really show up much at all despite the early hype for each member. Aguri is a late favorite, mostly because of how she was in the finale; a person who genuinely doesn’t understand the appeal of video games but is still willing to hang out with gamers and tease them about gaming’s darker sides. 8/10 Hajimete no Gal This was basically what I thought Galko-chan was going to be, but it also had it’s own uniqueness to it. The show knew what it was, and didn’t take itself too seriously, but wasn’t a slouch either; it made an effort to make the characters get to know each other and come together somewhat organically, considering how big the cast was. Obviously I’m drawn to Eri Kitamura’s Ranko; the misunderstood childhood friend with a gay crush on her best friend beating up any guys that try to get in her way is something I can get behind as a protagonist, let alone a side character. I think this show is actually more interesting censored than uncensored because they did it creatively and on-theme instead of just mysterious beams of light or clouds of steam. A fun show if you don’t mind sex comedies. 9/10

Isekai Shokudou The “comfy” show of the season to be sure. A great lesson in evolving narrative as well; it starts of with seemingly one off stories each week, but begins to intertwine the stories of the patrons that come along, which was done quite well. The only real problem with it is that, it’s called a western restaurant multiple times in the show, but almost everything they serve is Japanese; it was a real missed opportunity to introduce food from around the world to the Japanese audience, who would be able to relate even more to the bewildered fantasy characters coming to eat every seven days. That being said, if you just want to relax and enjoy something really just pleasant, or need to make yourself hungry, too, this is the show for you. 10/10 highly recommended

Isekai wa Smartphone to Tomo ni It’s kind of a misleading title, to be honest; it’s meant to convey how powerful his smartphone is in this new fantasy land devoid of most technology, but it’s actually more that God gave him affinity to all elements that makes the protagonist so OP. If that wasn’t enough, he can also learn all null magic, which is meant to be like character specific spells... He doesn’t even have to be taught them, he just have to read about them in a book and he can use it, which is crazy ridiculous in any other show, but because you are expecting him to be over-powered from the start, it’s actually quite enjoyable, in my opinion. The harem stuff was tedious but at least they acknowledged that a) in a medieval setting and time period polygamy being normal makes sense and b) protagonist is still holding on to his previous world and life’s customs of monogamy, and won’t commit to marrying all of them, not yet, anyway. I don’t know that I’d watch a second season of this to be honest. It would have to go one of two ways; either an actual challenge shows up, or he ends up similar to One Punch Man, and begins working on a way to go home or something. 8/10

Kakegurui I said earlier that Aho Girl is comedy of the season, but that I didn’t laugh at it the most this season. This show (and another) would be the reason behind that. I don’t know if I’m just too jaded for it or what but the fact that this show was billed as “psychological” slays me. How anyone could take any of these characters or situations seriously, in the most obvious hentai setting on the planet, is beyond me. The style and animation was all ready pretty and well done, as were the expressions. It’s hard not to compare it to Prison School visually. My main complaint would be that Yumeko isn’t fleshed out enough; they tried to make her this force of nature type character but so was the student council president, who was far more mysterious (naturally), so she just ended up feeling underdeveloped. Since this probably won’t get a second season, I would have liked for the finale to be more in jeopardy by having the second to last episode end with the “president” denying Yumeko’s challenge with a smile, which would have been devastating to Yumeko. If you would like an edgy version of over the top characters rivaling the Phoenix Wright series that take themselves a bit too seriously, you might give it a watch. It’s hysterical. 7/10

Keppeki Danshi! Aoyama-kun I’ll be brief about this one; it’s basically Sakamoto Desu ga, Tanaka-kun wa Itsumo Kedaruge, and DAYS!! mixed together. Make of that what you will. I loved the coach and the girls’ basketball star character. 7/10

Knight’s & Magic FINALLY another mecha show I can get into! Just had to make it wizardy and junk, I guess. Another show this season where the protag is OP and it ends up being just fine, honestly. A slight complaint would be that they bother to mention how much time passes between scenes multiple times, some of which are “many months” long, yet none of the characters visibly change with time. It kind of reminded me a bit of Arslan, in some ways. I would have liked to see more about the mysterious race that guards the secrets to the mech engines as well. If you’re only kind of sorta into mecha like me and want something different, this is a great show just for you! 9/10

Koi to Uso Really should have dropped this one, but there was just a glimmer of hope now and then that this would actually have an ending. It didn’t though, and now I feel like I wasted six hours of my life. There wasn’t even any big reveal in the finale that would be a hook to get me to read the rest of the story, just “he loves both and well I guess that’s it.” I liked how genuinely awkward the protagonist was; these days in anime they’ll say the protagonist is weird, otaku, awkward, but then he’ll be the least nerdy of his friends, or “borderline weird”, which when he’s with his friends makes him look normal (see Hajimete no Gal), which defeats the purpose. The guy friend who was in love with the protagonist was really interesting, and it felt like they didn’t do enough to make it feel like he would ever actually confess. The show isn’t particularly funny or poignant either, it’s just kind of there. The thing I will remember most about this show is that it had a catchy opening theme. 4/10

Made in Abyss It’s a crying shame that this isn’t a 24 episode season; who knows how long it will be until a second season, though apparently it’s pretty likely to happen. Don’t let the cute characters and pleasant background masterpiece artwork full you; there is some pretty gnarly shit in this show, particularly Mitty, a formerly-human blob of body parts that is functionally immortal, despite her friend Nanachi’s best efforts to put her out of her misery. You get to see, fully on screen, how this 10 year old became a puddle of skin, or basically the eldritch version of a pokemon. It’s fucked up. I honestly had to look away. Still, it’s a great adventure show filled with real peril and very, very dire consequences. My favorite character was Ozen because of how creepy she is but also I love her voice, it stands out from every other voice in the show. 10/10 must watch

Nana Maru San Batsu I have participated in quiz bowl in the past, but it was never this hardcore, yet still managed to have the elitist bullshit attitudes, so I wasn’t too sure I was going to like this one. However, Mari Fukami and Akira Sonohara kept me around. It’s rare to see a girl in a setting like this that is shown to have earnest and ambition separate from revenge; sure, she wants to redeem quiz bowl for her brother so she can play him again, but in general she just really loves it and wants to be better at it. Akira is fantastic, I empathize with them (for the sake of brevity, gender neutral pronouns will be used) on a lot of levels when it comes to games. Whenever I play canasta with my family, they just want to play to the bottom of the draw pile, which, when you want to play multiple games, can take HOURS, so I started playing where I would keep all of my cards in my hand, and then “go out” all at once to end the round. They stopped asking me to play because of it, but it sure was fun to throw a wrench into things while still “playing the game”. Also, Akira is really cute, I really loved the side ponytail wig. ANYWAY, I had low expectations, but this turned out to be pretty good, though there were some points I was skimming through. 8/10

New Game!! Anime of the season. I just can’t get enough of these ladies and their interpersonal dynamics. While things were once again switched around from the manga, it still feels very much like its right off the page, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Shoutarou Tokunou, the creator of the manga, sat in on script meetings and even wrote the script for some episodes! Which is pretty unheard of I think. He even started bringing a tablet with the script on it to make changes to the script on the fly. I’m really torn on the ending; they just about all but said Rin and Ko are lovers, which was actually more than what happened in the manga, but didn’t pull the trigger. I also feel like Ko leaving is a hell of a cliffhanger, especially considering the anime is basically caught up to the manga already. Tokunou has said that Ko’s time in France will be included in the next volume, so maybe in a couple years there could be a third season? That’s being greedy though; it got a second season, and I was already reading the manga before the anime so continuing to read it won’t be an issue. I just love them so much. 10/10 highest recommendation

Nobunaga no Shinobi: Ise Kanegasaki-hen Continues to be one of the better short form series I’ve ever seen. The comedy is always extremely clever and the historical accounts and the sarcastic take on such revered figures is always great to see. If you are interested in the time period or Nobunaga specifically but don’t take them too seriously you should really be already watching this. 9/10

Pokemon Sun & Moon I haven’t been this into Pokemon for a LOOONG time, and it is 100% to do with this series I think. It’s just so fun and energetic, there’s no world-ending threat (yet), the kids are all just hanging out and discovering new Pokemon stuff together. Lillie is of course the show stealer, and it would be great to see her travel as a full time companion with Ash eventually, since she essentially leaves at the end of Sun/Moon games to become a Pokemon master, just like Ash. I may have missed about 400 episodes of the series, but I don’t remember ever seeing any of the companions as like an apprentice to Ash, so that would be a new take for the series to use I think. I said Lillie steals the show, but Musahi/Jessie is still my number one gal; she is outstanding in this season, and is honestly becoming one of my favorite animated characters ever. Which covers a lot of ground. I know some people are down on the character design and over-exaggerated reactions, but I think, like the Sun/Moon games did for the game series, this was the breath of fresh air that the series needed to stay relevant. Continues!

Princess Principal The finale felt really flat/anticlimactic. They are definitely planning on a second season, or some way to extend the story like a game, which hurt it in my opinion by leaving too many things open-ended. Also seemed really hackneyed to have Princess and Ange just immediately back to lovey-dovey mode, despite Princess telling Ange to never let her see her again after a pretty hardcore betrayal. A begrudging thank you from Princess after being saved and a stern re-establishment of their relationship as mutually beneficial rather than romantic (or extremely platonic) that would build back up to it’s previous height in a continued story setting seems like it would have been a better choice. Best girl was Dorothy easily, for me. She seemed the most like a spy out of the whole group, and was kind of the Dick Grayson to Ange’s Batman; for raw ability she may be a bit behind Ange, but Dorothy has the heart and the willpower to really become a legend in the game, while holding the group together. Even though the show felt like it fell on it’s face at the end, the rest of it was crazy good, especially the episode where they confront the double agent and former classmate. 8/10

Teekyuu 9 Speechless. How do you describe perfection. Mandatory viewing. 10/10

Tenshi no 3P! Despite the pedo alarm sounding on nearly a weekly basis for this show, it ended up not being too bad. It was kind of like Ryo-Kyu-Bu but if all of the girls were professional level athletes already. To be able to play like that at age 7 or 8, and “not know what to do” with it seems really silly, but it’s more of a story about dragging the protag out of his room after becoming a shut-in from bullying. I feel like in the end the protag will end up with the age appropriate older sister, but then again I thought that way with Usagi Drop and Listen to Me Girls! I am Your Father! so who knows where this will go. Not to a second season, most likely. 6/10

Tsurezure Children I’m sure many people on tumblr were aware of this series without actually know the title, so it was nice to see it make the rounds every week with a decent amount of popularity. There’s not really one couple I would pin down as my favorite, it’s all just really clever gag writing that is couple with great visuals, another great short form series. 9/10

HOW TO BEAT SLAKING!!!!! It was confirmed recently that Gen 3 Pokemon have appeared in the game data so their release is emmininet. There are a variety of Pokemon that people will focus on once Gen 3 is released but king amongst them is going to be Slaking. Slaking looks like a lazy Ape.

"Slaking spends all day lying down and lolling about. It eats grass growing within its reach. If it eats all the grass it can reach, this Pokémon reluctantly moves to another spot" Pokedex entry from Pokemon Ruby

Slaking is a Normal Type Pokemon. Slaking has two pre-evolutions in Slakoth and Vigoroth Slaking is basically the Snorlax of Gen 3 with many of the same attributes. Slaking is a giant, lazy Pokemon. The big difference between Snorlax and Slaking is that Slaking is less of a sleeper and more just plain lazy. As amusing as that is, Slaking is still ultra powerful as it is able to unleash massive amounts of energy it saves in battle. Slaking is expected to have a CP level somewhere in the 5 thousand range. That is right 5 THOUSAND!!!!!!!! To be exact the mathematical expectation for CP is 5441! A 5 thousand CP Pokemon? Yeah this is the weird thing about Slaking. In the games in which Slaking was first introduced he was ultra powerful but balanced by a bizarre ability called "Truant". Truant would only allow Slaking to attack once every 2 turns. This ability helped balance out what would have otherwise been a far too powerful Pokemon. In Pokemon Go though there are no abilities. It remains unclear if steps will be taken to lower the CP level of Slaking (Nerf him) to compensate for not having "Truant". It is also possible they slow his attack speed, or alter his move set. It is also possible that the Slaking could be treated as a Legendary Pokemon.

Now for the ultimate question! How do you beat, kill, defeat Slaking. What Pokemon is a counter Slaking? How do you defeat Slaking? How do you beat Slaking in Pokemon GO!!!! Hot Tip: Generally Try fighting Pokemon! They will get double type damage against Slaking! A lot of the Pokemon you use against Slaking will be similar to what you use against Blissey and Snorlax. Machamp Machamp has just become one of the super necessary Pokemon to have in the game. You need him vs Blissey, vs Tyranitar, vs Snorlax and yes now vs Slaking. Find yourself a Machamp Raid or Machamp Nest and build him up. His importance is not going away. Machamp is still the premier of all Fighting Pokemon but you can try others. Another fighting Pokemon to try is Primeape in particular if you do not have a strong Machamp. Rhydon Rhydon is a solid all around Pokemon with strong CP, and a defensive advantage over Slaking. Poliwrath Poliwrath is a fighting and water Pokemon and is high CP to boot. You would want to use a Poliwrath that had all fighting moves to battle vs Slaking as only the Fighting moves would get the boost. Heracross Heracross with the move set of Counter /Close Combat. Heracross actually is better than many of these options however it is so rare I struggle to recommend it. If you have a Heracross with Counter / Close Combat then you should bering it out to battle against Slaking. Blazken In Generation III one new pokemon with Fighting Moves being added is pretty special and that is Blazken. Blazken is one of the Gen 3 starter Pokemon it evolves from Combustken, that evolves from Torchic. Blazken is a Fire / Fighitng Pokemon Hybrid. With a high CP Level a Blazken with Fighting Moves could become the top Fighting Pokemon to use in the game. You will definetly want to hunt down Torchic early on for this reason.

I’m totally over my Hamilton obsession. It’s a fandom of the past for me now. I’m not going to finish those lyrics. You can’t tempt me with something as simple as that. I’ve actually forgotten the next lines-

See, the thing is, when my sister gets whiny she can be really irritating.

Like, insisting that she’s only played a ‘tiny bit’ when she’s been at the playground for at least three hours now and it’s time to go home and have a late dinner, then continuing to complain about it the whole car ride home (“Evans is mean. Mom is mean. Daddy is mean…”) then refuses to get out of the car when there are other cars behind us (then she whines about how everybody was ‘dragging’ her out of the car when she was trying to put her shoes on), drags her feet as we go into the apartment, says she’s not going to eat dinner…like, not anything too big (most of the time, at least) but really annoying stuff.

And then sometimes it’s like the whole 'I’m not touching you *finger hovers centimeters away from other person’s skin*’ thing. When she’s really mad at me she’ll make motions like she’s going to punch/slap/pinch me and then when I ask her to stop (“hitting people isn’t nice!”) she’s like “I didn’t hit you though! Evans is being mean” and sometimes she starts to cry…OTL )

Evans + smol children:

Kid 1: “PLAY WITH US EVANS” *clings to my hand*

Evans: “-um-”

Kid 2: “Please?” *grabs my leg*

Evans: “I really need to-”

Kid 3: “Pretty please? You’re the best at tag and Monster games!” *hugs and refuses to let go* *puppy dog face*

Evans: “…how can I say no to this…”

*five minutes later*

Evans: “I know I shouldn’t back out of this but please hear me out I’m DESPERATE*

oh dear XD people don’t really bother to close their mouths over here, I think, since if you don’t think it’s rude then it IS more comfortable. It is considered more polite to cover your mouth with your hand when there’s too much food in there, though.

My parents really want to know why I love manga so much, but they don’t usually have time to watch/read anything with me (and besides, my dad doen't like violent stories so…).

Well, she doesn’t like the Rising Sun Flag at all (like I said, over here it’s a really bad symbol. Many people who were hurt by Japan during WW2 are still alive today, like the old ladies who were once sex slaves for Japanese soldiers, and for everyone involved that pain is never going to fade) but she’s still going to try it out just for the story :) she’d probably really have a problem with it if the flag was used in more serious situations, but since it usually appears in comedic moments in the manga I think she’s accepting it as ignorance(?) from the creator.

Yeah, I don’t really like Kissanime ^^;; I’ll try to find Re:Zero on the Korean site where I usually watch things. Or maybe a manga/light novel version, if there’s anything like that? Since the Manhwa Cafe might have a light novel or a manga.

LOL Fairytail is too intimidating. And you know me, I’m too angsty for that series XD True though, HxH is super long…

Killua isn’t QUITE a cinnamon roll (he was still raised by the Zoldycks and trained by Illumi) but he comes close. I mean, even after going through a hellish Zoldyck childhood he STILL doesn’t want to be an assassin and is capable of kindness and emotion towards people who aren’t members of his family. The MC Gon is probably the ultimate cinnamon roll though.

Illumi has issues. The fact that he willingly hangs out with Hisoka should prove that.

The Zoldycks are a BRUTAL family, ok, I feel sorry for all their children. Like, come on. The emotional abuse is just as bad, if not worse, than the physical abuse.

Idk if this was ever addressed in canon, though, but I wonder if Illumi also resents Killua in a way? Since Illumi is the oldest child and was trained since birth to become a perfect Zoldyck assassin, but when Killua was born it quickly became obvious that he was a prodigy and then he was chosen as the heir. Kilua doesn’t even WANT to be the heir, he stabbed his mother and one of his other brothers just to run away from home, and yet he’s still being chosen over Illumi, who was trained for a similar role since birth and just had to silently, obediently step side the moment this tiny baby brother was born.

True, I guess it’s like me shipping Queen Luna with so many characters LOL. Evans/Kimblee is still one of the weirder ships though, like what do we even have in common (answer: ruining lives. And we both….appreciate….art?). At least Scar/Evans had the potential to be awkwardly cute XD

IF YOMO DIES- I CAN’T EVEN. He’ll be dying at the hands of the chacter I just don’t care about anymore (Mutsuki) for one of my not-so-favorite characters (Touka). NO.

And I watched S1 of One Punch Man on a react channel. I’m obsessed and now I’ve got to read the manga HELP ME

And I finally found real watercolor paper, I can’t wait to paint on it :D

Also, sorry for not sending any asks ;-; i got discouraged because asks get eaten so easily (plus I had so much to say lol)

FINALLY PLAYING CP! I didn’t get Steam though (after reading about it and thinking it through I just don’t think it’s for me ^^;;) so I ended up downloading it. I’ve played all the routes except for Waltz’s, but I’ve only gotten the Good Endings so far. (There’s actually a reason for this: Firstly, I was actively trying to get a good ending because I get weirdly obsessed when playing dating games…since it’s a romance, it feels like a major fail if I don’t get a good ending XD (I know, I’m really weird). And as for the second reason…you usually have to act like a jerk to other characters to get the bad endings and I didn’t want to do that ;-; (seriously, I know they’re just fictional characters and that it’s silly, but I HATE it every time I choose to do something mean and they look at me like they’re so disappointed ugh OTL)).

My thoughts so far:

-Art is amazing! It does look a little off at some points during the game but it’s not very noticeable and other than that, it’s great. The intro looks the best, I think, and the sketchy, simple style used during flashbacks really adds to the ‘fairy tale’ feel. It actually reminds me a bit of Kuro’s art.

-Idk about music, my family’s always around and having my earbuds in for so long hurts my ears so I just turned off the sound while playing ^^;; I did hear a bit of the intro though and it sounded nice.

-I like the history with the Great War and the crystals :)

-The whole concept of Fairytale Curses is really interesting! It was fun to try and guess how the curses worked for certain characters and how they could be broken.

-Rod’s route was probably the most boring because it was too predictable. I guessed that Alcaster(? is that his name? I’m talking about Fritz’s father) wasn’t the real villain, that Mythros was the witch, that MC’s mom was probably a witch, that Rod was in love with Viorica and that Viorica had something to do with his curse, that falling in love with MC would break his curse…yeah. The only thing I didn’t see coming was that MC’s mom was not just a normal witch but the Tenebrarum bearer. However, it was still interesting enough to make me want to play the rest of the game, the romance was cute, and I liked how they handled the whole ‘step-siblings’ thing.

-Rod himself was a bit boring. I don’t think he was badly written, but his personality was a mix of the typical 'stoic’ and 'tsundere’ types so yeah. I do have to give the writers kudos for not turning him into an annoying tsundere, though. I mean, Rod can be a jerk but he didn’t irritate me and I didn’t dislike him.

-Karma/Klaude’s route threw me off because of the whole rose motif. I thought that by 'Beauty’ he meant 'Sleeping Beauty Curse’ XD it didn’t help that he kept talking about being tired and not having had enough sleep.

-I liked his habit of calling people 'darling’; idk why but it’s cute. I also like that he’s the only character so far to actually address MC’s relationship with her mother and what it must have done to her (even if it was just a brief moment). Karma’s personality in general was charming ^^

-I also really, really liked his character design! Even though my favorite color is blue I think characters with a 'Red’ theme (like Grell from Kuro) always look good. It makes them pop and stand out from the rest of the cast.

-But I’m sad we didn’t get to meet his father. The glorious man who calls his children 'Karma’ and 'Llama’.

-I was also a little bit disappointed with Karma at first. From the art I saw before the game I thought he was this cool, powerful swordsman who liked to wear dresses and didn’t care what people had to say about that…turns out he just had to do it because of the curse ;-;

-(Karma’s curse was also a bit confusing to me. Idk, I just think they could have explained a little better why dressing as a woman helps…)

-Rumpel (or rather, Chevalier…but I’m never going to get used to that name. It reminds me of 'Chivalry’ or 'Chandelier’). People don’t seem to like him a lot but I was looking forward to playing his route…he just seemed like a fun guy.

-He turned out to be a very interesting character that I wanted to see fleshed out more. I mean, he started as a 'Shallow, Childish Flirt’ type character, then we found out he’s actually a nice guy, then we found out he’s a DOCTOR (I got spoiled for that before I played his route but still), then there’s the thing with him being too selfless for his own good…I like that they didn’t just turn him into a 'Playboy’ character.

-Tbh I thought he was sweet? *prepares for the hate*

-Also think the whole thing with Bria was handled well. I’m glad that neither she nor Rumpel was made out to be the only victim.

-I wish we got to see more of how Mythros’ death affected Rumpel, though.

-Fritz is a cinnamon roll :) a total sweetheart.

-His route might have been a bit boring, though, because MC spent so much time locked up in the castle..but it got a lot better towards the end, after MC got back to the Marchen.

-I also found Varg really interesting and felt a bit sorry for him. Wish we got to see more of him- especially since it was mentioned that he was created from some part of Fritz’s personality. We never really got to see the 'Varg’ side of Fritz :(

-(wonder if there’s more Varg in the Bad Ending?)

-Also I’m sorry but Fritz’s curse reminds me more of Jekyll and Hyde than Little Red Riding Hood XD

-DELORA YOU ABSOLUTE QUEEN. HOW DARE YOU GO AND DIE ON ME DURING FRITZ’S ROUTE. I THOUGHT I WAS AIMING FOR THE HAPPY ENDING asdlfk;lkc

-(didn’t really care for the mother-daughter relationship with Delora and MC, though, because their interactions didn’t feel that way?)

-MC. I haaaated her at first and I hated her even more because I sensed she was going to get an angsty backstory that would justify her behavior. But she was actually really well written and I ended up liking her a lot!

-Emelaigne and Parfait are sweethearts. (also I like that detail with the shadows around Parfait’s eyes)

-wish there was some more diversity in the cast

-Also female love interests! With a little tweaking we could have Delora! Parfait! Jurien! And if we can date Rod, THEN THERE’S NO HECKING REASON WHY WE CAN’T DATE EMELAIGNE TOO

-It would have been nice if the love interests called MC out on her behavior at some point. I mean, we know why she acts that way but they don’t.

-And if they’d talked about her childhood with her…Hildyr was a terrible mother.

-Speaking of Hildyr, wow. Just, wow. I like that she’s not a flat, 100% evil character and that she does genuinely love her daughter (in her own twisted way), but…yeah.

-Mythros is a slimy rat who was probably aiming for Magnificent Bastard status and failed. (I do feel sorry for him, though. And his design looks good. It sorta reminds me of Vincent Phantomhive)

-Also, random: I renamed MC ever time I played the game. I love naming characters so in any game, if you can rename the MC, I always have to change the original name ^^;; I ended up naming her Theodosia once (sorry Burr, I’m sure your daughter’s nicer than the MC), and then Eliza just for how funny it was (because now I associate the name Eliza with Cinnamon Roll Queens and the MC is anything but).

-Delora, MC and Emelaigne are probably my favs. However…

-The Ultimate Fav is the one and only Mr. Broom. Such development. Much complexity. 10/10. Best character ever.

-And now, the characters I ship Queen Luna with (yes, I absolutely HAVE to do this with every one of our shared fandoms): Fritz and Karma :D it would be so cuuute

-I’ll add my opinions on Waltz once I get the time to play his route :)

Right, right, and I totally didn’t force my friends to listen to the whole Hamilton soundtrack and then totally didn’t get this close to singing along to everything. Both of us are over it

Nope, trust me, I was a little shit. Whenever someone tells me stories of baby Luna, I wanna curl up into a ball and die from embarrassment. I’m not even joking when my parents wanted to take me to get tested for ADHD. And then, suddenly, I found the magic of books and you will not get me to move my ass unless my life’s on the line (and even then I’ll reconsider XD)

Ouch… well, most little kids are like that? I mean, I don’t interact with them a lot (we have a mutual dislike for each other :P), but there’s a reason why I don’t like them. They can be adorable and all, but I just don’t have the patience ^^;;;

I think I’d cry of cuteness if I ever saw Evans with little kids, because that sounds absolutely adorable!!!

Tbh, the thing I have most problems with is the sound of it, because it gets on my nerves so much ;-;

Still, it’s really nice they make an effort to understand you ^^ I finally told my mom about my idol obsession today, and I was so happy when she wasn’t weirded out T^T The thing is, I’m so used to people giving me weird look when i so much as mention anime, and idols are a whole new level of that, that I just don’t wanna tell anyone about it. Hell, it took me 2 months to offhandedly mention it to my parents.

I think Re:Zero has a light novel? I’m not sure, honestly ^^;;;

Dude, you would not like fairy tail AT ALL. It is 98% tasteless fan service, and I was able to tolerate it for the sake of plot, but in the recent chapters, the plot itself has also become really stupid. Like, if a character dies, no one is worried any more, cause we know they’ll be revived 3 pages later. It became really stupid near the end. But, hey, it’s over now.

In summary: HxH is messed up XD I’m still debating watching it… maybe a bit later, or maybe I’ll pick the manga up ^^

Art is a very wide term, so I guess you could say both you and Kimblee do have it in common? It’s just up for discussion which form of art XD I must say, I do like you and Scar better though, because I don’t really think Scar would potentially blow you up if you did anything wrong…

Seriously, it was so weird ;-; I usually remember all my dreams, so but I usually dream of anime and other fictional characters (help) and things I thought about a lot during the day. Most of my dreams are crazily bizarre.

Well, I mean, Loki finally had the decency to wash his hair (I’ve waited 3 movies for that), so I’m more than happy about his part XD

Tbh, I’m not into it too much either, but I do enjoy detective/mystery shows, so why not.

I can’t wait for you to play Watlz’s route. That guy is still my favorite, and I still wanna cry when I think of him XD Trust me, there are FEEELS. HE’s also one of my favorite tropes T^T

Don’t worry, I also always get good endings first and then the bad ones (tbh I do the bad ones for the CGs and achievements. I wouldn’t do them otherwise XD)

The art is honestly one of my favorite parts, especially the character designs! Some of the CG is a bit inconsistent, but it’s still admirable, especially for a free game!

Trust me, the music is absolutely amazing! If you ever want to hear it, there’s a small sound room or something in the settings and you can always listen to it there ^^

Yep, Rod is a bit predictable, but it’s still a fun route ^^ He’s my 4th favorite, tho… Or 5th, I honestly can’t decide…

Karma, my darling ;-; Tbh, I’ve always doubted that he was Beauty and the Beast (because it’s my favorite fairytale If i’m gonna be honest :P), but the whole ‘not now’ and ‘running out of time’ (haaaaamilton) thing gave it away. The ‘Character calls MC a pet name (darling, love, LITTLE STAR (T^T)) is definitely one of my favorite things ever ^^ But I knew Karma was, well, Karma (aka Beautiful Lady) the second he appeared in the alleyway in the prologue. the hair gave it away tbh I think we should meet Llama in the fan disk coming out soon? I really wanna buy that disk XD

Rump is so much more than he seems. I mean, from what I saw in the prologue, he was my lest favourite, but I think he might be 4th? Still not sure if it’s him or Rod… ((also, don’t get me wrong, just because they’re last doesn’t mean I dislike them! It’s just that I like them the least (sounds equally horrible)))

I love Fritz, but I love Varg more, which is why Fritz’s bad end is the worst for me, personally (vaaaaaaaarg). And I was so sad when he erased himself ;-; Why you do that my dear wolf.

I KNOW I ALMOST SCREAMED WHEN DELORA DIED WHYYYYYYYYY. Idk, in some routes it does feel like mom-daughter somewhat, but then again, i some routes, Delora is more of that sassy friend.

Mythros is that guy i wanted to feel sorry for, but simply couldn’t. Especially not after waLTZ’S ROUTE. Fuck you, Mythros.

Oh, wow! Poor Eliza and Theodosia hahah Tbh, I always use Luna in otogames because it’s not my real name (so no embarrassment from the characters calling me by my actual name), but since i always, always use Luna on the net, I’ve kinda adopted it as a second name XD

Mr. Broom best boy 1000/10. I want a route for him.

Honestly, I see you with Fritz, bc cinnamon roll and cinnamon roll! He’d always be the one to makee sure you’re not uncomfortable with something and would melt when he saw you with little kids (despite the fact that you were pleading for someone to help you at the moment XD). Also, you can bet this guy will dedicate so much of his free time to watching you pain. HE’d also try to learn how to paint himself, so he could feel closer to you! Also, time to drown Evans in pastries, it doesn’t matter if she likes them or not, Fritz will buy more or less the whole shop so you can try it. He messes up so badly if you come watch his practice. He is dead. He can’t handle the pressure of you watching (even tho I doubt you’d give a flying fuck if he messed up a step or something) and will just turn red, turn around and call for a break. Also, you can bet this guy is all about head pats. You learn to have a comb with you at all times XD
