Raphael has been more of a guide during Vals journey. There to provide council should she ask. But he insists Val learn most things herself. So Raphael stepping in to warn her in this one moment was to be taken seriously. He doesn't want to lose her, even if he's trying to play coy about it.

missed the mark by (looks at calendar) uhhh. hm. but I really wanted to do something for the 5th anniversary! happy five years to these idiots 🎉
#art#twisted wonderland#twst 5th anniversary#i'll stop for a while now i promise i just wanted to get this out#genuinely feels a bit weird to be 5 years in already huh!#that combined with having finally finished up episode 7...#oh no all the milestones hit at once help#hold on while i reminisce for a moment#because MAN i did not expect the anime disney boy game to become so special to me#(especially my little wet rat dragon and his family)#to be fair 2020 onward was uhhh let's say prime timing for a piece of silly and unapologetically indulgent media#(not to get too real here or anything but let's just say that. some of the stuff in 7 specifically did hit a bit harder than it should've.)#but also just. you know how it goes.#sometimes a thing doesn't so much speak to you as it reaches out and grabs you by the throat#with an intensity that shocks and bewilders no one more than you#and sure you can ignore it because having any emotions about media beyond faint scorn is of course the epitome of ~cringe~#but you could also just throw yourself wholeheartedly into it#and lemme tell you one of those options is a hell of a lot more fun#idk i'm just kinda rambling here#it's been a weird five years but i'm glad to have had these guys for it#and hey if nothing else it gave us meleanor#the inside of my brain at any given point is just the 'do it for her' meme covered in pictures of our late great dragon princess#i would not have it any other way

I really really like that lucanis reaches the 'there must be some way through this' realization 'off camera', so to speak, while presumably looking at rook explaining the situation to spite. it just. hits right. he gets that moment to himself after 'this place is a nightmare, why would I want to stay here' to come back into focus, to gather himself and think it through in peace, outside of the demands of anyone’s gaze (including the player’s!), while rook takes care of spite’s confusion and urgency and distress as he can’t himself in this shattered state. they're inside his soul, but he still gets that moment of privacy, with rook and spite there and supporting but not intruding. idk there's just something so good and right-feeling about it. rook's presence in lucanis' mind at its most vulnerable and frozen could have felt SO invasive if the quest wasn't written as skillfully as it is, and I get skeeved out by that kind of thing incredibly easily so it's a testament to how well it's done that it always feels safe and supportive. lucanis has had both his bodily and psychological (slash spiritual/existential) integrity and autonomy violated so brutally and repeatedly, and having even the way the camera perceives him here grant him the dignity and respect and privacy of soul he hasn’t experienced in a long time… it’s a whole thing huh. No wonder it’s taken me a while to put it into words lol
(also what a contrast to what solas and rook have got going on, and what a sly way to slide the point of comparison in there to build to the thematic whole. the solas version of this IS of course wildly invasive and skeeves me out but in the intended delighted horror movie way. solas, too, was let into someone’s soul through the cracks in the wake of a traumatic event, and he IMMEDIATELY sought to turn it to his own benefit and use that trauma as a weapon against them fhdsja I’m sorry but it’s just such a character-revealing instinct for him to act on without hesitation and I love how terrible he is, it’s all so unforgivably premeditated and consistent.
rook acting out of the desire to make sure lucanis is ok vs. solas going ‘well. When life gives you oops killed my friend, make dead friend poisoned lemonade and make his loved ones drink it. this sunk cost fallacy isn’t going to perpetuate itself’ is such a neat contrast and it’s not in your face about it but it’s still there, deep and solid down in the thematic narrative. rook doesn’t do anything to or in lucanis’ mind, really — they negotiate their way through the layers of defense and are let through, and they help him make the whole thing more explicable, but they never exert any force or go rooting around for anything that doesn’t present itself to them first. solas goes about gathering ammo for when he's going to nothing personel kid this person from like the first moment fhdskh doesn't waste a second before he's on that gaslight gatekeep girlboss grind. the fact that the game goes out of its way to show there IS a respectful, non-selfish and kind version of this process makes what solas is doing even more deliciously awful (glee) and rook and lucanis’ relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever it might be in any given playthrough) all the more moving to me)
#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#lucanis dellamorte#solas#getting some affectionate solas slander in there is always correct as far as I'm concerned that's basically his form of prayers I think#one of the most non-alienating depictions of trauma and mental illness I've come across honestly. up there with harrow the ninth#(which is the all-timer of course. that book gets me when no one else gets me) and the hawk and a hacksaw speech in due south#for things that have resonated with me recently. you can tell how deeply lucanis feels like he's a completely shattered and destroyed thing#that can't come together and be a person again. and the narrative treats him with such affection and respect anyway#even on the worst route where he doesn't really get to resolve anything he IS still a full whole incredibly loveable (and hilarious) person#even though he can't see that from the inside at this point because there's so much pain and confusion in the way.#and there's no condemnation or blame there that he shuts down irrevoccably in many ways on the fallen treviso route -- only#a neutral not-unsympathetic recognition that this was one thing too many added to the burden. this was more than he could take.#and it's not a failing it's just a fact. he's surviving the only way he knows how even when it isn't immediately uplifting or cathartic#no there are things here that's beyond you to help him with and you have to sit with the discomfort and grief of that without#getting acess to his inner life the same semi-unguarded way again actually. it's so interesting. it's subtle and real.#he was a person with deeply entrenched patterns of psychological defense before he met you and you are not an exception to that#in an automatic way. you can't 'fix him' or his relationships you can only be there with him and when conditions are right that alone heals#(subtlety in some of these things I think a lot of the 'rook is only a therapist' criticism completely fails to engage with. btw.)#anyway. he means the world to me and I love this game I only wish there was more of it

I like to imagine Gordon getting increasingly flustered at the vortigaunts' nonstop praises. Just like, face slightly going pink, rubs the back of his neck and looks away all "aw, shucks".
Like, yes, Gordon Freeman is an unstoppable force of nature, but he's also like. Just a guy. He's a nerd and probably a little overwhelmed with suddenly being this Big Hero™️ that everyone is in awe over.
He's the guy who single-handedly WRECKED the Citadel with nothing but the gravity gun, destroying everything and/or one in his path, but like. They kidnapped his friends. NOBODY touches his friends without feeling the wrath of ten thousand supernovas.
But he's also the guy who fiddles with stuff in his friends' labs like a kid in a candy store. He's a man of multitudes.
#half life 2#gordon freeman#vortigaunts#i like to think the vortigaunts are all 100% meaning every word#gordon's just not used to this level of praise#he's autistic he doesn't know how to deal with this much attention#me? projecting myself onto the mute protagonist? of course!#that bit where you get the antlion pheropods and the vort praises you SO MUCH#'the Freeman shows his excellence in all things' *gordon blushing furiously*#compliments are nice and i can tell they really mean it but these are borderline worshipful and it's awkward#also: gordon watching alyx give the vort in episode 2 a kiss and just being like :D#god i love the vortigaunts they're great. i wanna take on gman and/or his employers with their help#i think together we could defeat them and free ourselves (and alyx)#i'm also imagining gordon just. not mentioning to eli that his life and alyx's are entwined now#he's mortified at the thought of eli making MORE jokes about the two getting together lmaooo#griggs and sheckley show up to white forest and ask about it and gordon just freezes bc eli is in the room#i replayed recently as you can tell lmao#not half life: alyx tho#vr is. a whole thing. but i think abt the ending all the time#gordon is a big lovable DORK and he's too polite to ask the vorts to ease up on the excessive praise#he enters the portal's inner workings and lets his body relax. alyx is okay. eli's headed out with judith. they're safe.#it's just Gordon. the gravity gun. and the catharsis of fucking shit up and reducing breen to atoms.#calmest he's been all day tbh#it's probably even more terrifying than his category 7 one-man hurricane through the citadel earlier#i really love playing half-life bc sometimes i'll randomly need to adjust my glasses. and i'm like '!! Gordon also has glasses!!'#diversity win! this video game protagonist wears glasses!#he's genuinely the only one i can think of who wears glasses. at least in the big franchises#fricking nerd. i love him

it actually hurts my soul whenever i see people saying saikis friend group besides the psychickers don't know his real personality 💔 you guys weren't paying attention when you watched the show and i really really stand by that

i think you guys misunderstood the whole fantasy thing in saiki k... if having silly, out of character fantasies and misunderstandings about saiki means you dont know or understand him then the psychickers dont understand him either...

#beyond that though i also just don't agree that the way he is with the paychickers is his 'real personality' and honestly#no matter how many times it's explained to me i just don't understand where you all got that#people just act differently with their different friends and hes like kind of a dick to aiura and toritsuka because hes funny#BUT HE ISNT REALLY LIKE THAT WITH AKECHI AND AKECHI KNOWS HIM EVEN BETTER THAN THOSE TWO#hes still sassy of course because yeah thats pretty much the main missing piece that the other friend group doesnt get to see#and they do still get to see it!! just not as heavily... so it really isn't that drastic of a difference...#i'm once again begging you all to compare the saikechi horse race betting chapter and the chapter where nendo kaido kuboyasu and saiki play#video games... because it's THE SAME. ITS THE SAME.#the only real difference is that the second group didnt know he was using his powers#half of you only make these claims to try and promote your ships as better than the others too which is so funny#ive talked about this before but it's especially stupid when you think about how saiki chose to become friends with the main friend group-#and has been PLANNING to tell them about his powers for a really long time#while he became friends with the psychickers because he literally had no other choice and they already knew about his powers#not saying he doesn't also love them because he does#it just isn't a flex that they know and the others don't because saiki didn't get to make that choice#saiki k#tdlosk#the disastrous life of saiki k.#saiki kusuo#meows post

perhaps my most #cancelable videogame take i can post on this website is i think that the kind of people who say that anyone who picks the "morally wrong" or "mean" options in video game dialogue should, as a player, feel bad about their own choices/morals in real life. is that those people are just another flavor of the kind of dudes who play Disco Elysium and get mad for not being rewarded for picking the facist options. both of these groups are reducing games to "a thing I want to agree with me and everyone else who doesn't either suffers or does not have the option to play a character who behaves otherwise" rather than "a medium where you get to (or even Have to) explore different kinds of characters in order to experience the full depth of the story and characters in it."
When I want to pick options in a game that are mean, negative, arrogant, or ignorant, it's because I want to explore what would push a character into becoming that kind of person. Sometimes I want to see how the NPC characters who I-The-Player like/agree with react to someone who is fundamentally different from them. I think it's GOOD actually when the narrative allows you to push limits and especially when it has the option to then punish you for it in some way, such as losing options/routes later on, or companions straight up abandoning you for your choices. It DOES often make me deeply, viscerally uncomfortable to make choices in a game that are so counter to my own, but it means I get to experience that discomfort in an isolated environment and also think about what it means, what would push the character or even yes a real person into actually feeling those things. And I get to play with what ways the narrative could challenge them/make them grow over the course of the game--or on the other side, it can let me make a character who does start off more open/accepting but let the events of the narrative push them into being more reactively closed-minded instead.
I like that we have invented a medium where you can play a game multiple times and experience it differently depending on the character you play as. Books and TV and movies are all static--the greatest draw of games to me is the ones that are responsive, that can tell a slightly different story every time--when other characters in the game respond differently to you because of it, or some paths open up and others don't. And so yes it did disappointment me when a franchise that previously had these elements, Dragon Age, did not include them in the most recent installment. I don't think games should have options where you get to just hit a button to say something racist with no consequences or exploration into why a character would do that. but like, if i can only ever play a game as an upstanding person who is morally right all the time in basically the same flavor for every dialogue. I only get to truly play that game Once, you know? And I only get to see the way the companions react to someone they like and trust. And never really go deeper than that.
So like... I just sit and think about the scenes you can get in Inquisition. with Cassandra breaking down, because she fears she placed a would-be tyrant at the head of a powerful organization--that she searched and searched and chose wrong. Of Varric who is desperate to convince you not to become a monster, like the last person he feels betrayed him. Vivienne intentionally pissing you off because she wants to see how far you'll go when angered, how much she has to worry about your reactions. They say so much about the companions, what they fear most, and where they will draw the line. And especially in Inquisition, at these crisis points--you don't have to double down. Your character can have a come-to-Andraste moment where they go "woah... is that really how people see me? is this what i want?" and I think that kind of option can do way more for encouraging actual players to examine the choices they make in stories, more than locking the player into supportive, non-aggressive options does.
now. do i think all games execute these flavors well? no. writers and devs will have their own biases and blind spots, even if they are otherwise well-intentioned. and I don't think the ends of the scale need to extend from "absolute angel" to "horrible bigot", because the real complexity of course lies in the middle. I am not asking for games to let me be bigoted at every turn, what I want is games that let me make the protagonist deeply flawed in one or more ways--fearfully closed-minded to things outside their upbringing, or afraid of change to the status quo, or who want to advance their own aims regardless of consequences to others. I actually agree that the game was correct not to include any options for disrespecting Taash and their personal journey for example, but I do wish... idk maybe that we could have had a scene where if for instance the player character avoided outside-world missions relating to clearing away blight, they could confront us on how this might devastate the natural world and its creatures like dragons, and push us into trying to resolve it. Or in the other direction, if you spend the (currently meaningless) time giving money to background NPCs begging in the cities, Neve could could have a special cutscene thanking you for your attention to people otherwise beneath notice. You know?
And of course not every game can do this, I can write those sentences up there that represent hundreds of hours of dev time, of course they can't do it all. But the prior games usually did have at least a little of this, and that was enough to make me really fall in love. I KNOW the tumultuous development cycle, restarts from scratch, interference from higher-ups all contributed to why Veilguard was unable to hit those same marks this time. And we probably won't ever know how much of the loss of options/reactivity was intention vs a side effect of these things. But I wish people wouldn't frame players who miss these aspects as insane/morally corrupt. When for most of us it's because we genuinely enjoy challenging and exploring these aspects of reality in fiction in a way entirely unlike what we actually support in real life. i fully acknowledge not everyone desires to play this way. and that's fine!!! i am glad people can enjoy doing a "good" run each time that brings them joy. but for me it really limits the potential bounds of my enjoyment i guess. I like media that is complicated and messy and makes me think, and extra so when I get to see how playing that way impacts the greater story around it.
#idk man. i need to stop writing the same damn post over and over i know. i just Keep Seeing That Shit Again you see#its my own failing. to think that 'but if you listen to me this time and see my perspective you'll finally Get It'#when like other ppl are just not interested in that. we simply come to games for different things#but seeing posts that say 'it says a LOT about a player who chooses x' well maybe it Doesn't Actually. reflect their real life at all#there are of course going to be bad actors everywhere. but instead of turning them into Boogymen and accusing each other#i wish that conversations could just be taken in good faith that Some People Desire Different Things#without having to somehow be bad people for disagreeing with you#veilguard critical#datv critical#dav critical#datv spoilers#da4 spoilers#ramblings#i don't Hate veilguard by any means. i enjoyed the game play and like many other aspects of it and i love the characters#i just wish we got to see more sides of them and who they could be when pushed to extremes#like we did the last games#'jade these thoughts belong in a DM with your besties not tumblr' well alas neither of them Wanted to play veilguard bc of the above#so here i am with nowhere else to go besides my personal tumblr ot get it out 😞#the worst thing a piece of media can be to me is Uninteresting. because at least something that's Nasty has something its trying to say

Ok, I think I have a pretty good idea of why a lot of Akechi's dialogue is... like that.
So, even before his confidant truly started, I noticed that he has a real knack for directing the flow of a conversation. This is very fitting for someone who is both a detective and skilled at interviews - when there is a topic and a goal, Akechi is in his element.
All this to say, he's actually kind of controlling when it comes to conversational flow. He probes for information, or turns the conversation around to a particular topic, usually the Phantom Thieves. He manages to take a few of Joker's dialogue options and spin them so they sound mildly incriminating in the context he's placed them in - the only way to truly get around this is to pick answers that feign indifference, and even then, that's more than a bit telling. He's clearly very good at this kind of thing.
But then, we get conversations where either Joker does something he didn't expect, or else he doesn't have a particular goal in mind - and the conversation stutters. In the first instance, Joker does something (a particularly egregious example is putting his glasses on him and fluffing his hair in rank 3) which both leaves him wrong-footed and no longer in perfect control of the situation. He just kind of... freezes, for awhile. It's hilarious. He has no idea how to respond.
He picks up control again in the phone call afterwards, having chosen to play into it, turning this "fooling the crowds" into a kind of game or secret between them. Nice save.
But in instances where there isn't an obvious topic and the goal is somewhat nebulous, for instance, that one Leblanc scene, it becomes pretty apparent that Akechi doesn't have the right "script" to go off of. Again, it's particularly notable in that scene, because I'm fairly sure he didn't have any specific reason to be at Leblanc, other than him looking for a quiet spot now that public opinion has turned on him. And because there isn't anything specific he's digging for, he kind of just ends up throwing things at the wall to see what will stick. Probing for any kind of recognizable reaction that he can jump on and work with, and that just doesn't really happen in this scene.
He references Sae, a woman in a respectable position, to Sojiro, but instead of that netting a welcome, it earns his ire, given Sae's recent actions against him. He then tries to greet Joker, his... rival? friend? enemy? person who at least seems to somewhat enjoy spending time with him? But Joker's responses are somewhat short, and Akechi practically wilts. He tries to commiserate by oversharing. He tries to involve Futaba and reaches out for the only topic of interest he can think of around "young people". He compliments the coffee. He compliments Joker. He tries to invoke that connection between them. None of it is really sticking, nor does it serve as a jumping off point for him to steer the conversation, or even really start one.
So, he basically just ends up having a one-sided chat with himself and then leaves. Hilarious. Also a little sad, if I'm being honest. It's really giving "guy with no friends who only knows how to speak to adults" energy. If there's no specific purpose to the exchange, or he is not in control of its direction, he seems to be kind of out of his depth. He succeeds only in being a little awkward and confusing, more than anything.
#quick note! i still have not finished the game! please avoid spoilers also i am aware i could be very wrong here. pls be kind if i am yeah?#of course#I am going from an in-universe standpoint for fun.#I am positive it's because writers needed to shoehorn in information and it ended up making the flow of conversation awkward as a result#but i digress#i still think there's merit to this reading though because even outside of flow his word choices and some of the kind of#intense things that he'll say#really do come across as 'guy who doesn't know how to talk to people and is basically just pushing for a reaction he can work with'#anyways. just my random thoughts again#i still don't get this dude but#pretty sure he's a control freak. pretty sure he's also lonely. bad combination.#storyrambles#story plays persona 5#p5r#i think this counts as analysis. it got a bit longer than i was expecting ->#call me ace detective the way i am ace. and also a detective#analysis tag becomes kind of funny when it's about this character in particular haha#goro akechi

i dont want to think about anyone ever leaving Sam behind (bc it is SAM, how could anyone) but like... the potential of the rings
When Sam is telling Henry to leave him, what if he gave him the ring, asking to please just get it to John. If he dies he just wants John to get the ring. And I can't remember if Henry actually knows Lichtenstein's full name (he probably does) but just for the sake of this, let's say he doesn't. And he gets back and talks to Hans, and when Hans tells him that he wouldn't have known what to do if Henry had died, Henry mentions Sam's last request. And with like, the heartbroken weariness of someone who lost so many importan people already, Henry would just go "I don't even know who John is."
And Hans, Hans would definitely know. And he'd probably realise what this means, maybe even remember that Lichtenstein has a similar ring. Can you imagine the absolute heartbreak when Hans tells Henry? Why would Sam do this, why would he risk is life? If he has someone waiting for him? Someone to return to?
#step one: think of sad jamuel content#step two: ????#step three: profit#this would obviously never happen. bc there is no universe where anyone would ever leave sam behind#i actually love that the game doesn't tell you you can save sam#i was so heartbroken. i killed everyone in the camp and dragged sam to the horses anyway. fully expecting for it to just not be possible#i was reasy to fight the game#imagine my elation when i could put him on that horse#anyway.#of course my brain managed to get stuck on sam and lichtenstein#when there is another perfectly good and amazing ship with tons of content#no it had to be the one with like. a handful of content and a dream#anywway. this idea came to me yesterday evening while doing the dishes. do what you want with it#kcd2#kcd2 spoilers#jamuel#samjohn#(i still don't know what their actual ship name is)#kcd sam#kcd lichtenstein

[Zac] was just trying to tell me to be happy with the win, and I appreciate that about him. Because I can get lost in, just like everybody can, you get lost in the adversity of the season. You can't take winning for granted and I've tried to get better at that.
#important characterization notes#i do agree that they asked wayyyyyyyy too many questions about the outburst (if you can call it that)#and like....one question about the browns lol#but! i did think this was very interesting#because like. all zac was trying to do was be like 'chill out. we won. be happy!' and joe responding#FUCK THAT IT'S FUCKING EMBARRASSING!!! 😡😡😡#is precious to me#this lil perfectionist. never happy with just winning.#even in a season where those have been exceedingly rare#just like the raiders game! (and i do think it was interesting that he said he can let himself have these outbursts#when they have the game in hand. but they should be blowing out their opponents#like the raiders like the titans. but they aren't. but he feels comfortable anyway.)#verrrrrrry interesting#so calculated even when he seems to be 'losing it'#and then to tie it back to joe'marr. because of course. it's me.#thinking back to that ravens post-game insta live that ja'marr had#of joe apologizing for playing like shit (and not focusing on the fact that they. you know. won the division for 2 years in a row)#and ja'marr assures him he's good and all but doesn't tell him to just be happy#he tells him yeah. you did fuck up on some stuff. but you're good. you're good.#i dunno. ja'marr noted joe handler! versus how zac handled it lol#(also joe emphasizing that he didn't want the yelling all the time in your face coach.)#(let's not forget he dealt with that already with urban lol)#and even in this response saying that he appreciated what zac was doing#ANYWAY just rambling at this point#joe burrow#zac taylor#cincinnati bengals

The call came in just as he was sticking more photos to his board. He was so close to cracking this case, he just needed a little more evidence. Maybe find a source willing to talk to him. Either willingly or unwittingly, at this point he didn’t even care. He wouldn’t reveal his sources anyway, and if he could just figure out where to find something damning…
“Boldheart,” he said into the phone, attention still mostly on the board. Maybe it needed some string. Or at the very least some of those flames Nimona had drawn and cut out for him to add.
“Mister Boldheart, this is Principal Conroy from Gloreth Elementary School.”
Oh no.
He didn’t quite manage to keep in his sigh.
“What happened this time?” he asked. He refused to say ‘what did she do now’, if only because Nimona usually had a reason for whatever chaos she wrought. Like trying to free the pet gerbil from ‘his stinky, tiny prison’ or punching a kid who made fun of her because ‘you couldn’t even get two normal foster parents, you ended up with two foster dads’.
Of course the school hadn’t done anything about the other kid. He was a legacy at the private school, and he’d ‘just been stating facts, after all’.
“It appears Nimona bit another child.”
Well, that was new.
“What did the other kid do?” he asked, knowing he wouldn’t get a straight answer until he talked to Nimona.
“Mister Boldheart, this school has a zero tolerance policy,” the principal started, and he pulled the phone away from his ear, mouthing along the words mockingly has he got his keys.
Part-way through her little rant, he cut her off. “I’m on my way,” he said, hanging up the phone before she could answer.
Nimona was sitting in what Ballister was coming to think of as ‘her’ chair. The one furthest away from the principal’s door. Her face was like thunder, arms crossed in front of her defensively. But it eased a little when she saw who was picking her up.
As much as he and Ambrosius tried the old Good Cop, Bad Cop routine, Nimona had very quickly learned they were both complete pushovers. And that while Ballister could be stern when it mattered, he wasn’t about to punish her for no reason. He’d always hear her out, and he’d always explain why a rule was a rule and why it shouldn’t be broken. (Or when it could be, under certain circumstances.)
Also, he was fifty per cent more likely than Ambrosius to take her out for ice-cream when she got suspended for no reason, again.
“What happened?” he asked, crouching down in front of them.
“Chad wouldn’t stop trying to poke me,” Nimona said. “I told him to keep his hands to himself or I’d bite him. It’s not my fault he didn’t believe me.”
“I never touched her!” Chad shouted from the other side of the hall. His hand was bandaged rather dramatically all the way down to his elbow. “I even said ‘I’m not touching you!’”
Ah. Ballister knew that game all too well from his own time at Gloreth Elementary. Being the scholarship kid had made him an easy target.
“Come on,” he said, putting his hand on Nimona’s shoulder. “Let’s go.”
“Don’t you need to talk to the Principal first?” they asked.
He did, but he really didn’t want to. Instead, he looked at the ancient secretary, who’d always had a bit of a soft spot for him when he went to this school. “How long is she suspended?”
“Just the rest of the week,” the secretary answered. It was Wednesday, so not too bad. “The Principal wants to have a serious talk with you, though.”
Ballister knew exactly what talk she wanted to have. It was the same one she’d had when they enrolled Nimona, suggesting that Gloreth Elementary had a rather rigorous curriculum, and perhaps ‘someone like Nimona’ would be better suited for a ‘less demanding environment’.
Another thing he remembered all too well from his own time at this private school.
Never mind that Nimona’s grades were at the top ten per cent of her class. Well, when she remembered to hand in her homework. And it was legible between the drawings of sharks and dragons and who knew what else. But still, it wasn’t the curriculum that was bothering her.
“I’ll send Ambrosius by tomorrow morning, after his shift,” Ballister said. Because suddenly, when The Golden Boy Legacy Kid himself stopped by it was much harder to say no, or that their kid didn’t belong here.
They walked out of the school, Nimona’s fuzzy pink book bag hanging from his good shoulder, her hand clutching the wrist of his prosthetic arm. They were already too far down the hall to hear the Principal call them back, and Ballister knew she was too dignified to run after them.
“Look, I get it,” he said once they were outside, because he really, really did. “But you can’t go around biting people.”
“Why not? He deserved it,” Nimona said, sulkily kicking at a pebble.
“Because you don’t know where his hand’s been, it’s gross.” Okay, maybe that wasn’t the best argument for not biting people, but it was one that was probably most effective for this particular kid. He and Ambrosius could sit her down and explain why biting people was morally wrong some other time.
Nimona was silent for a moment, before sticking out their tongue and running her own hands over it. “Blergh, you’re right!”
See? Effective parenting.
“How do you feel about milkshakes and a stake out?” he asked.
“A stake out?” The hunched shoulders and frown disappeared, replaced by a bounce and a bright, sharp smile. “Who’re we taking down?”
“Nobody just yet,” he said. “But I could use a sidekick following one of VerdAgra’s employees.”
“Yes, boss!” Nimona cheered, all but throwing herself into the passenger’s seat. “Can I have a chocolate-peanut butter-caramel milkshake?”
“Sure thing,” he said, even though that sounded like a lot. Nimona beamed and rummaged in the dashboard console to find their Stake Out Sunglasses, handing him his own. Because you couldn’t do a stake out without them, of course.
Tonight, he’d have a talk with Ambrosius about how maybe Gloreth Elementary and Gloreth Prep weren’t the best place for Nimona. Not because she couldn’t handle the curriculum, but because the school had no interest in stopping the bullying of anyone they deemed lesser. He didn’t want her to suffer the way he had. Sure, he’d gotten into a great university at the end, but had it really been worth it?
Maybe homeschooling was an option. Or another school. Anywhere that didn’t try to crush his kid’s amazing spirit, natural curiosity, and sense of self.
“Can I tase him if he tries to run?”
“No!”

That moment when you kinda have plot armor but only really because the person who is in-universe running the plot is obsessed with you and would rather see you live through hell than have you killed <3
#this is about#457#inho for sure likes to see gihun be absolutely tortured either physically or emotionally#and idk i made a post about it before how gihun in season one didn't survive just cause of plot armor or cause he was lucky#because some people think that about him#but i think it's very interesting how in season 2 gihun is kind of protected from death#but not because he's the main character or better than any other character#but simply because the one who is in charge of stuff is very interested in him and likes to analize him like a bug#it's very obvious that inho is in some fucked up way protecting gihun not just when they try to take the games down but also Inside the#games themselves#but i really wonder how long this will last#will gihun simply not die because inho wants to see him suffer#how long is gihun going to survive like that?#will inho make bigger exceptions? breaking his own rules of 'everyone has the same chances' just so gihun doesn't die?#when gihun possibly gets to a point where he Wants to die will inho actively stop him? just so he can break him more? watch him suffer?#anyways i hope this makes sense#just very interested in how gihun does have an advantage this time around but really only because of a very Fucked Up reason#he was just a player in s1 just like everybody else#but then he got Interesting#for inho#so now he's special#not special as in he's the main character but special as in somebody high up in the system is very interested in him#and that someone high up can make it so that gihun has different conditions#lea's random thoughts#seong gi hun#hwang in ho#NOT a 457 hate post btw!!!!#just analizing gihuns role as a main character inside the plot while taking into consideration the system that he is put in (the games) and#how somebody in charge of said system can change it to gihun's advantage (without gihun knowing or wanting that of course)#squid game
