li tianxi blaming herself for her parents not divorcing and because they don't things escalate past boiling point. blaming herself in the first place for the tensions between them because she has needs and not everyone is willing to try and meet her with them. li tianxi choosing to look away and not say what she sees anymore so this won't repeat. but in the process just ending up enabling tianchen as he spirals down and down.
li tianchen blaming himself because he wanted to fix things for his mum and do what she couldn't but instead he gets her dead. and tianchen just wants to protect tianxi like he failed to protect his mum but he doesn't try to actually *understand* her. so instead his efforts eventually drive her away because there's only so much she's willing to take. she didn't want to be 'protected' like this.
they've both lost their parents and tianxi doesn't want anyone to suffer as she has whilst tianchen wants everyone else to suffer as he has. everyone except tianxi.
wanting to protect someone but not giving them the agency in the decision. in whether they even want to be 'protected' in this way.

what with the discussions of jonathan deliberately keeping a passive role and playing dracula's game, what with the analysis of jonathan as filling the role of gothic romantic heroine, I'm really struck by his reference to Arabian Nights at the end of today's entry. admittedly, all I know of Arabian Nights is a very little about Scheherazade: how she told stories that kept her husband entertained so he would choose to keep her alive, night after night. and if that isn't a sobering thing for jonathan to bring to mind in his current situation, I don't know what is.

WIP game!

so i have two fics going one rn: 1) in the boat purgatory in at world's end, james comes across gov swann and the two have a final conversation together (not using that for this since i haven't done too much but something to look forward to i guess) and 2) bolt's "what if james had a dragon" fic and subsequent discussions and questions has me now doing a "what if hornblower had a dragon" fic so here is an excerpt from that:
“Who are you?”
The dragonet is speaking French, and internally Hornblower swears. Is French the only language the creature knows? It’s no issue for him, of course, but how can it be expected to be a British dragon if it only knows French?
“Captain Horatio Hornblower, most recently of the HMS Sutherland,” he replies, also in French – awkwardly so, because it’s a ridiculously formal introduction to make to a dragon, but in light of never having conversed with one before he’s fallen back on the old habit of saying more than is necessary.
“That is not a French name,” the dragon says. In English.
“Non – no, it is not. You speak English, then?”
“I do.” Pause. “That was a long introduction. I hope you don’t want me to use it whenever I want to call on you?”
The idea of a dragon wanting to call on him at all is no less ridiculous than having a conversation with one, but it – he? The voice is deep – has a point. “You can call me 'Hornblower',” he says.

TGWDLM AU where on the way to Professor Hidgens’s house, the group see Infected Pete and Ted has a complete breakdown. These monsters got his little brother and he wasn’t even there, he didn’t protect him, didn’t look for him, didn’t even think about him - he was too busy thinking of himself, like always. Now Pete’s gone forever, because clearly whatever happened to Sam isn’t something you can come back from. He swore, he swore after Jenny that he would never feel that bad again. But this is worse. At least she didn’t die! *Audience members cringe* His brother, though, is dead. At sixteen years old. It couldn’t be Ted, the useless bastard with nothing good ahead of him. No, Ted wanted to survive. And Pete - earnest, brilliant, loving Pete, perhaps the last person on the planet to give a damn about him - paid the price for it.
This forces Emma, who has been spending the whole last year dealing with the pain of losing her sibling and not getting to say goodbye because she was off being selfish and neglecting her relationships, to realize: ‘Oh. Fuck. The sleazy asshole has feelings… that I can empathize with. Ew.’ So she tells him about Jane. Although she still hates everything else about him, a) nobody deserves to suffer through that alone, which she knows from doing it alone, and b) maybe if he starts to see her as a person with feelings too, he’ll be slightly less insufferable. And it works. The solidarity lays the foundation for a slow-burn friendship. Will they always annoy each other? Oh yes. But it’s hard to understand someone on such a raw, fundamental level and not reach out to them when you yourself also need support.
Due to his external and internal walls being shattered, Ted has to become more comfortable with vulnerability; he has to be more appreciative of and sensitive to other people. He really, really values the few relationships he has left. He and Charlotte connect more deeply while she’s concurrently processing her complex feelings about Sam and his death, and he might not leave her alone with Sam, imagining how he’d feel to be alone with Pete’s body and the alien inside it. He grows to be an actual friend to Paul and��� well, Bill might not have enough time for that, but nevertheless. Maybe in this timeline, a handful of Hatchetfielders get to the PEIP helicopter together. Maybe the Hive doesn’t escape the island. Maybe PEIP figures out how destroy it.
Pete was the good one. Pete was the one with hope. But if Ted’s the one who survives, then he’ll just have to live for both of them.
Or he could let the Infected get him right away and the brothers could sing an epic duet.

pros of my current job:
I’m good at it
I make enough that I can comfortably afford to buy myself a little treat without guilt (let alone not having to worry about making rent)
I genuinely like my in-office coworkers now that the toxic one left
Commuting is actually nice in the summer because they’ve got AC and my apartment becomes an oven
I adore my team lead and wish she lived closer so we could get lunch (she’s in virginia and i’m in minnesota)
cons of my job:
The leadership sucks
It sucks so bad
My manager (a middle-aged white woman from northern wisconsin who gives off republican vibes) very obviously believes in the Protestant work ethic that suffering is noble and anything else is laziness and lack of commitment (example: she once denied my request to be exempt from mandatory overtime when i had a stomach bug because there are “no exceptions”)
She is also trying to “fix” things that aren’t broken and making them actively worse because she doesn’t understand what my job actually is and keeps giving me conflicting coachings so that nothing I do pleases her
Related to #4, she’s telling my team to cut corners without saying it explicitly or in writing and it’s obviously so that she can claim plausible deniability if it blows up and can throw us under the bus (i am also refusing to do so which I’m pretty sure has me labeled as a problem)
went weeks without interacting with her and presumably not being noticed by her (which was a blessing) but the micromanaging eye of sauron turned on me this morning and it’s like.
you’re so stupid. if you fire me or push me to the point of quitting then your department will be so fucked. you need my ass. and everyone i’ve spoken to in my line of business feels the same way as me, even people i didn’t expect. she is shooting herself in the foot in the name of “production go up.”
capitalism (especially corporate capitalism) is one hell of a drug.
