I know people are already discrediting Sarah's instagram post today, which is perfectly fine. Of course an author should be able to post about a new album they are enjoying and have that be it. And people are welcome to interpret this however they wish. Confirmation bias is a real thing, and none of us are above it.
For example, I myself am a writer. I spend a lot of time curating playlists that remind me of my characters and help me get in their headspace. I truly believe a lot of writers connect deeply to music and lyrics and poetry that hit deep on themes they explore. So this confirms my bias that Sarah is extremely excited about an amazing song that just dropped by a massive artist that reminds her of her work. That is truly one of the best feelings in the world.
Ana Huang curates playlists for every single one of her couples and books. She both posts them on her website and at the beginning of her books:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These photos were pulled directly from my kindle from her website.
Sarah does have a book announcement coming soon. One of the biggest stars in the world and one of her favorite artists released a song that has an uncanny amount of similar themes to a couple that every major news outlet covering the topic in the past months have suggested is "suspected or likely to be next" and Sarah was genuinely so excited about that song (out of 31 tracks) and said "Thank you for this GIFT."
Just a few weeks ago SJM made a big post about Spring. It was full of flowers, blushes and pinks, and BAKING! All of those things scream Elain, however there was a huge surge of "Sarah is so intentional, she does everything for a reason. There is no way this isn't confirming Lucien or Tamlin endgame." Those same people are now saying that this very pointed instagram post is meaningless and let the woman just post fun stuff that she likes. Sarah also loves flowers and baking in her real life, so that also *could* have just been things Sarah loves and just general ACOTAR buzz since there are new readers every day and the series starts in the Spring Court.
Another important major thing to note is that Sarah frequently states she does not have social media on her phone, she stays out of theory spaces, and she likely does not run her own socials. Most, if not all of her posts are directly related to her books and generating buzz. Her last feed post was about writing the ACOTAR book, and now a song came out that is potentially a perfect fit. This all falls within marketing and generating buzz and conversation. Sarah likely didn't just download instagram to her personal phone, which she avoids like the plague, just to post this one song and then delete it again. It is more likely it fits in with marketing themes.
The truth is, we, as the consumer, do not get to decide the intentions behind a public persona's social media behavior. But when it comes to Sarah's last two instagram stories, it's either both or neither. Either Sarah's flower and baking filled springtime post meant something AND this means something, or neither meant anything.
Sarah is aware everything she does gets dissected. I'm not making a definitive statement whether or not she leans into that, since she hasn't made an outright statement like the queen of easter eggs herself Taylor Swift has.
But there is only one character relevant to both of her instagram stories: Elain Archeron.
Flowers. Baking. Forbidden love.
We don't have to change up the rules or remove anything from the equation to show all signs point to Elain.

random notes about gemini venus 🌻💛
Tumblr media
attracted to intelligent and quick witted people
they enjoy early stages of relationship - getting to know each other, experiencing things for the first time with that person and even the nervousness
if they love you, your opinion and point of view is really important to them and they take your advices seriously
very attracted to people’s voices
words of affirmation is probably their main love language
quotes, poetry, love letters >>
they actually listen to song’s lyrics
of course physical attraction is important to them but they fall in love with people’s minds, that’s what makes them stay
“the love of my life” - they say about 20 different people
they can be crushing REALLY HARD on someone for a long time and then, out of nowhere, the crush changes into disgust and they’re like “how tf could i ever find them attractive” 🙄🥱
wanting to know everything about their person but at the same time not because they enjoy that ‘mysterious’ side - it keeps them curious
they don’t have a specific type, not really - the people they fall for can be each other’s polar opposites
they value honesty
arguments can turn them on (think the rain scene in pride & prejudice for example)
“the way their voice sounds, or the words they speak, i can never decide what pulls me in more”
keeping their crush a secret is hard, they want to talk about it with someone
crushing on actors, writers, singers, youtubers, twitch streamers etc. is super common
flirty friendship and/or friends to lovers trope >>
they want to be their partner’s best friend
“i fell in love with your soul before i could even touch your skin”
gemini venus natives on quieter and more shy side can become more talkative with their loved ones
they’re probably the type to laugh in serious situations (while trying not to)
falling asleep to their loved one’s voice - i think they wouldn’t be against the idea of their person reading a book to them while they’re falling asleep
having goosebumps (and being turned on) when you whisper in their ear - be it sweet nothings or threats 😏 iykyk
they enjoy teasing, flirting and joking around with people they are comfortable with - even if they’re not interested in them romantically (although they’ll probably end up catching feelings one day)
+ it’s very possible some of their friends actually have a crush on them
gemini venus ♡ books
i think gemini venus natives are most likely to question their sexuality at some point and be confused, because they really do fall for people’s mind the most (everything else comes second)
dreaming about love all the time 🥰
being in actual relationship 😬
when the person they’re interested in patiently explains something to them it’s the most attractive thing to gemini venus
they can fear of being seen as dumb and stupid - they find smart people attractive and they want to be seen as smart too, especially by their love interest
holding hands is a big deal for them
they want to feel important, they want their partner to rely on them (you know when the main character have companion they trust, respect, view them as equal and keep them informed about everything)
so they want that partners in crime relationship 👆🏻
people often think they’re flirting even if they’re not
they actually like the idea of love at first sight and soulmate kind of connection
they find intense eye contact hot, and again, it can easily turn them on - also stealing glances at each other 🫦
they want to meet their person in more interesting way - like falling for an assassin who was sent to kill them for example.. lmao sorry but it’s true, they want the thrill, drama, adventure, everything 🤌🏻
even if it doesn’t seem like that, trust me when i say they’re probably dying inside when you’re flirting with them - sometimes simple words can make them melt
their mindset is literally ‘what if i can find someone even better?’ and that’s why they’re not really a fan of commitment
but they’re actually very loyal once they find their person
enjoy reading and even writing fanfictions
making weird noises and giggling like a little kid when it comes to love 🤭
stand up for their loved ones no matter what - they have powerful voices and use it to their advantage, charming way with words - they know exactly what to say and are not afraid to do so (especially if that means to protect people they love)
if they like you, they love talking with you - about anything, at any time
sometimes they don’t even know what they’re talking about, but still keep the conversation going because they want to talk with you
they love showing off their knowledge and they will learn about your interests as well to impress you and show you they care
if gemini venus person is interested in you, they will remember every random thing you once said - you said you don’t like green couches? 🤣 they’ll probably remember for the rest of their life, even if it’s the stupidest thing
they don’t like people that take everything too seriously and don’t understand their jokes
they have no problem to end the relationship if they’re not happy, it can hurt - sure, but they usually have high standards and won’t settle for less
giving pet names is one of their love languages too
there’s just something about the way they smile and laugh that’s so attractive and charming
also, they can laugh/smile a lot while talking
they need someone with whom they can discuss anything that’s on their mind and who can catch up with them on conversation - and someone who will challenge their minds
playful relationship, challenging each other in a playful way
“are you flirting or starting a fight?”
this one is absolutely random but i’m going to leave it here anyway 👇🏻
random fictional characters i think would be their “type”: chishiya (alice in borderland), sebastian (hogwarts legacy), doctor who (especially 10th and 11th), richie or maybe eddie (it), mr. darcy (they would enjoy the challenge + his mysterious character would keep them interested), spiderman (probably all of them), jim (the office), sherlock holmes (benedict’s), kaz brekker (six of crows) and probably anyone who’s smart, has a good humor and is loyal, but chishiya, sebastian and doctor are the first ones that come to mind

Seeing people genuinely saying that TTPD is her best work lyrically and that it tops Folklore and Evermore is just WILD to me. Like, am I missing something? Are there two different versions of this album out and I’m listening to the bad one? Because???? TTPD is such a let down. It’s not clever, it’s not even catchy. I like one song and the rest are kind of…are forgettable. I heard “like a tattooed golden retriever” and burst out laughing-like there’s no way we went from folklore and evermore to THAT. I had to stop listening because I just don’t like it. I don’t get it and I’m tired of people telling me that I’m too dumb to understand her genius. I don’t think this album is genius by any means-that’s not to say it doesn’t make sense (although it doesn’t make sense to me at times) but mostly I just don’t get it in terms of like why and what happened to the beautiful writing of folklore and evermore to…this. Folklore and evermore actually resonated with me on such an emotional level and it felt very adult and like Taylor was nuanced in her writing and that she moved on from all her problems stemming from men and “jealous women” and now TTPD just feels like I revisited one a conversation I’ve had with my friends in middle school thinking we were so deep and misunderstood.
Yeah, listen... you're not missing anything
I truly think that the people enjoying the album are blinded by the aesthetic of the album. She's obfuscating the poor writing, and basically incoherent imagery, by using the watered-down cottage core/ dark academia aesthetics. It's almost laughable the way she changes everything about herself just to fit the most popular aesthetic of the day.
She hides bad writing by name-dropping great writers and hoping that, through the power of vague allusion, the names alone will make people think she's in the same league.
She was guilty of this back on Folklore, as well. To be honest the first time I heard "tell me what are my Wordsworth" ("The Lakes), I laughed out loud because it's sooooo silly to make a pun out of one of the most important Romantic Poets of all time. I let it slide back then, because I thought it was a one-off. Still, it's really funny that she apparently knows who Wordsworth is, yet the best she can do with that information is make a pun out of his name.
And now I see her name-dropping, lack luster writing is just the best she can do. I hate that she really thinks of herself as a poet....
As someone who has studied poetry, and written literary criticisms about Emily Dickinson's poetry, it actually makes me angry to see she compares herself to Dickinson. I'm gonna write a post about that problem too.
I have a lot more to say about the gross lyricism of this album.
I have several different analyses that I plan to publish soon.... because it makes me so angry the way she is such phony-baloney nonsense.
More to the point, I'm angry I fell for it. All the use of intense aesthetics and the money she pours into promo, and I fell for it. I was a fan.
Not anymore.

the tortured poets department
i have thoughts!! surprising, right?? this is for anyone who cares to read them ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Before you read, note that this is going to be critical of things, so let me just start by saying I have loved and listened to Taylor since I was 8, so none of it is said lightly or without careful thought (in fact, this took me absurdly long to write). Most of the issues I have are very near to my heart, actually, so I've spent a lot of time thinking about it. If you don't want to read criticism, then just don't read more. DISCLAIMER that I did my best, but not even this fully captures the nuance I feel able my own opinions lol I recognize the other sides and points, I really do. I hold many conflicting opinions.
The short version is I will always love her music and her voice and she is capable of writing absolutely gorgeous lyrics (dare I say poetry?). I don't tend to think too much about the sound of it because if I like the sound, it's all I really care about—maybe it sounds the same as other stuff, but if I like that other stuff, I don't really care about whether she branches out or not. I think it's great and interesting when she (or anyone) does, but I also don't like change so it doesn't matter to me the way I know it matters to some people. That's just me!
What gets more complicated for me is the narrative, themes, and general trends that have been more prominent the last year or so, and that's what the rest of my thoughts are. It's me enjoying the music while also being acutely aware of all the grief tangled up in it because of how much less connected I feel in many ways.
Side note: this got soooo much longer than even I expected and it still just scratches the surface! so if you decide to read, 1. thank you, and 2. I'd love to keep talking to you. 🤍
———————————————————— 💭
I am an overthinker (shocking!) and will for sure be annoyed that I can't think of each and every thing I think about this album, but this is what comes to mind right now. Some things that have stood out to me more and more with each release:
a tendency to write self-aware lyrics that, in trying to be self-aware, betray somewhat of a lack of self-awareness
a frustration with never growing up that she expresses while also not realizing the way she is complicit in that and her own refusal to grow up
considering herself the victim, particularly after "overcoming" the accusations that she always plays the victim
venturing more boldly into the territory of serious mental illness/suicidal ideation/mental health treatment despite demonstrating a fair amount of ignorance regarding those things in the past
fame going to her head (in the sense of her becoming further and further out of touch) and the entitlement in a lot of the more immature attitudes that come across in these songs
self-awareness: for me, the first example that comes to mind is Anti-Hero: "it's me, hi, I'm the problem, it's me." It's a claim at self-awareness because she's poking fun at the fact that she knows people always say "maybe she's the problem." The reason why it feels to me like it exposes a lack of self-awareness is because she explores it mostly as a criticism to overcome and not a valid point of self-reflection. @jakeperalta's tags on her post explain it better than I do. Yes, there's an issue when you reduce every feeling to "well maybe she's the problem," but part of growth is admitting that maybe you are part of the problem and coming to terms with the fact that there is often some inevitable truth to that statement—and being willing to work on it. This example is from Midnights, but I think it ties into the next point.
immaturity/never growing up: I actually think these first two sections are just two parts of one section, but it's easier to read this way anyway. There are lots of references to not growing up on this album, the first that come to mind being "So High School" and "teenage petulance." Maybe it's just me, but as a 34-year-old woman, I wouldn't want to be feeling "so high school." I mean, as a 25-year-old, when I talk about feeling like my high school self, it's usually because I'm recognizing how limited my judgment and self-awareness was in high school (despite all the therapy and my efforts to be self-aware in high school). And I am aware of my own bias here—I absolutely hate the football game days because I didn't even like watching people act like that in high school, but at least they were high schoolers—but I do think part of what we've seen is Travis allowing her to be more immature and take less responsibility because that's also where he is at. Obviously I don’t speak to it with any authority since I don't know what happened in the relationship, but based on her behaviors and what I know about Joe (which is VERY little), I kind of get the feeling that part of what she didn't like about being with Joe is that he pushed her to grow. "Your integrity makes me seem small," etc. etc., but not in an “I want to grow” way, but not liking that feeling because she shouldn't have to feel small just because she wants to be able to only do what makes her happy. Just looking at the difference in her behavior and the fact that it seems like she's stopped trying to learn (Miss Americana-ish), it seems like she very much resents the responsibility that comes with being such a famous person and mainly considers herself a victim of her fame.
victimhood: to an extent, yes, she is a victim of her fame. No one should have that much fame and power, and of course she didn't sign up for it in this way. But wanting to have the kind of influence and reach that most artists desire is intertwined with fame. There isn't a way to separate it (in an ideal world, maybe, but that isn't what we're dealing with) and it's something that, to some degree, artists do sign up for. And I think she resents that she's expected to take any sort of responsibility for anything that she doesn't want to do, in a very, "but that's not fair!," teenage petulance kind of way. She even says in Sweet Nothing that "I'm just too soft for all of it." We're all too soft for all of it, but that doesn't mean we get to ignore it. It bothers me that she doesn't seem to feel any sort of responsibility to use this giant platform to do better. Everyone is aware of her influence, including her. I think that's part of the grief. No, it is not her job to use her platform for good, but I thought that it was something she valued and something she wanted. The other line that really stuck out to me was from Cassandra: "They say what doesn't kill you makes you aware, what happens if it becomes who you are?" You may be a victim of what doesn't kill you, but if it becomes who you are, that's not their fault. It reminds me a bit of the exhaustion of living with mental illness. For me in particular, it affects my relationships in a very fundamental way, and there are days that I sob because I am exhausted of things that are so normal being so, so difficult for me... but even though I didn't ask for it and it's not fair that this happened to me, it's still my responsibility to understand how my issues affect how I show up in relationships. It's still my problem, even though it isn't my fault that it's my problem. And if you're lucky, you find really beautiful people who are willing to help you and see that it's not their responsibility, but they want to make it easier for you—I recognize how lucky I am to have some people like that, but it never makes it anyone else's problem. If they decide one day it's not their problem, the truth is that it isn't (and then there's a more complex conversation about what you want to do to preserve a relationship). This is also very connected to something about Kate Beckett/why I identify with that character, and I can touch on that if anyone wants to know, but I don't really have cohesive thoughts about that prepared (it makes more sense if you already know the character). This also goes to other things, like her being upset that people always focus on who songs are about while ignoring the part she played in feeding that culture (like with secret messages).
mental health: this goes to a bigger discussion of how we turn to celebrities who are HIGHLY unqualified to have opinions on things for guidance (the nuance of the above discussion about using your platform), but the more she ventures into the discussion of mental illness, the more upset I get by some remarks she has made in the past. And yes, people grow, she may not feel this way anymore, but nothing in her behavior gives me any reason to believe that she doesn't still have this attitude. This is one that I know I have to be careful of because of how personal it is for me (I've been placed on a 5150 "danger to self" hold and I am a therapist), but one interview that has always made me so upset is that one where she talks about how she's never been to therapy, then ends it by saying "I feel like we just had a therapy session." She has said multiple times how she has never wanted to go to therapy when she has her mom, who already knows everything about her. And that is highly irritating to me because 1. that's why she's your MOM, not your THERAPIST, and 2. there's already so much stigma and apprehension around therapy and many people feel this way, so to have someone like Taylor Swift validate all the people who say "I'd rather talk to someone who already knows me" or "so and so is my therapist" is unbelievably frustrating. There's a reason it's unethical to treat people you know—that isn't therapy. And I think I wouldn't be so bothered by it if she didn't speak about it with such authority, like she knows what she's talking about when what she's saying shows that she doesn't (edit: this is specifically in regard to therapy, not mental illness. I am highly aware that anyone can be mentally ill). The other thing about this album is that it does seem to be an album about loving people with mental illness, and I've already seen a lot of interpretations that simply feed the narrative that people with mental illness are unlovable and mental illness is the reason people mistreat you (particularly the discussion about her lovers being blue all the time). And the issue with that is it's already a common misconception among people with mental illness, that their mental illness is an excuse or reason why they don't treat people right. It's disrespectful to the people who recognize that they have a mental illness that affects how they interact with others and choose to try to overcome it. I'm all for honest discussions about mental illness, but it's so disheartening when it happens on such a large scale and some of the loudest voices are people who don't know enough to know how to (at least try to) do no harm.
fame: I'm not really going to go into it because this has already turned out way longer than I meant for it to, but also because I feel like it's already been touched on. For me, it's the conversation about her feeling she should be able to just do what she wants. I think we all feel that way, but because of her fame and the fact that she's just about untouchable (as shown in how she came back from being cancelled), she can just tune everyone out. But one example was how uneasy I felt about this album being announced at the grammys. For one thing, it's not a fan-voted award, so even if it should, it doesn't feel the same. And regardless of your take on award shows, I do think it showed a level of insensitivity to the other artists who haven't won a bunch of grammys to decide that she would announce a new album at the grammys. Because even if she had a backup plan and said she didn't plan on it, the truth is that, to decide to have a backup plan, you did have to count on it happening, at least to an extent. You had to feel it was likely enough that you wanted to have a back up plan just in case, but it probably would go the way you wanted. To me, it just felt so... disrespectful. Because for many other artists, it doesn't happen more than once. (not to mention the many other things happening that got completely overshadowed, like Annie Lennox calling for a ceasefire)
So if you read all that... I don't even know what the point is at this point. These are just thoughts that, to me, don't feel right to simply ignore. I know there's an argument that you can enjoy music without enjoying where it came from, and it's true to an extent, but I also think part of the music is where it comes from. So... I don't know. Do with that what you will. And if you are reading this, I love you (I can't believe you're reading this).

Pairings | Aemond Targaryen x Fem!Reader
Summary | You are a new court singer performing the first time at the royal feast, everything seems fine except the strained look on the prince's face ๋࣭ ⭑
Warnings & Suggestions | Aegon II, Physical Harassment, Fluff, Angst, No Physical Description of Reader, Reader being anxious, Very Cheesyyyyyyy
For all your life, you have always been fascinated with songs and poetry. All the love stories and sweet melodies filled your head with hopeless fantasy. That's how it brings you here, singing at the feast for the prince of the realm, Prince Aemond of House Targaryen. You have heard a stories of him claiming the largest dragon then lost his left eye as an exchange, you even wrote a song about him. From where you stand, he is close to what you have imagined, with the blood of the dragon and their notable looks, he bears the same silver hair and lilac eye.
Everyone at the feast are enjoying themselves, lords and ladies are dancing around to the sound of your voice and the tune of the band. You couldn't help but notice the prince, it is the his name day so why is he sitting there, all stern and bored? Is it because of your voice? Are you not singing well? Perhaps these types of songs are not his taste? You look at your bandmate and he gives you an encouraging look. This is your first time performing in front of the court, you are anxious and just wished to do your best to entertain them all. You returned to look at the main table again and see the prince looking directly at you. Nervous, you quickly avoid his gaze and return to the nobles who are having the times of their lives.
Once the feast ended, you returned to your chamber, all exhausted, and think of how today has done you well, except for the prince. He is a complex man but you couldn't help and worried that you did not do your part well enough, it is his name day and all you wished is to bring him joy despite the fact that you never knew him personally. After cleaning yourself and changing to your nightwear. You laid on your bed and thought of what caused him to act that way on such joyous event.
“What if he hates the sound of my voice?”
“What if he hates the way I worded my lyrics?”
“What if I got replaced before I even get a chance to sing at my second performance?”
The next day, a handmaiden of Princess Helaena informed you that she wanted to have you occupied her times at noon. You dressed yourself in a simple gown of blue and silver, the royal house was kind enough to present you with proper gowns for occasions, many of them are fine silks with detailed embroidery. When you arrive at the chamber, the princess noticed you and quickly told you to sit on a chair next to her, “My princess, what would you like to hear?” you asked her, she looked up to you with kind eyes and smiled “Anything really, I enjoyed your voice at the feast, it's really lovely.”. Her sweet words make you feel relieved, you sit next to her as you start playing and singing about the conquest. You thought that maybe she wanted to hear about her house's stories and the conquest has always been one of your favorite choice to sing.
From time to time, she would ask you about your life like where you came from, how did you started singing and you started to relax until the chamber's door opened and you saw him. You turn to sit straight and look down at your lute, how can he intimidated you so well? you think to yourself, Aemond walked in and sat himself opposite of his sister. “How have you been?" Helaena asked him, you stopped playing to let the conversation flows freely while you listened quietly. “Good, and you, sister?” you like the sound of his voice, wondering what he would sound like when he sings. “Good as well, you remember the singer from the feast last night? Her voice is very beautiful, don't you think?” she looked at you and turned to look at him. He simply hummed, nothing more, he is stressing you out again, you go back to playing and singing while he simply sits there the whole time.
When you returned to your chamber, you let out a huge sigh, it was awkward and you haven't settled well for life at court. How you missed the life as a wandering singer, traveling through towns to towns, every day and night are stories of endless journey. It's good for a time but it's just as dangerous as it could be. Men do not know boundaries when it comes to entertainers so when the gold cloaks came to you and took you to Red Keep, you were quite uneasy. You met the Hand who was in charge of the small council, future of the realm and all of those parts including an upcoming celebration of the King's second son. You were known for your talents, not only did you sing, you also played instruments like your favorites, lute and harp. Your name was praised through streets of King's Landing, though you mostly performed at Flea Bottom, many won't expect to find you there since it's a dangerous place filled with crimes, foul men and rats. The Hand told you that being a court singer came with its benefits, a safe place to sleep, foods to eat, gifts if you did your duty well, all the goods and comforts, after hearing those offerings, you agreed.
Now, you look out through the window to the view of the city. If you wanted to taste freedom again even for a night, who could stop you? without a second thought, you put on a cloak and find your way to Flea Bottom. The hours are getting late once you arrived and the fun has just begun. Walking down the street, many recognized you, the women of the brothel especially, smiled as they called out your name.
You walked into a local winesink where your fellow singer had sung at, and took a seat as you enjoyed the show alone until a man sat next to you and ruined all the fun with his grip on your arm. You ignored him but once you felt his hand, you tried to push him away until you laid your eyes on him, instantly recognized those silvery hair and purple gaze. This must be Prince Aegon, you have heard about him through the women at the brothels. He is clearly drunk and might be mistaken you for a whore, mumbling words out but you couldn't understand a thing. “Get off of me!” you told him, it is wrong to spoke that way to a prince but he was clearly drunk and didn't seem to mind, he gripped you even tighter and took you to sit on his lap. You struggle to break free from his force until someone takes him from you. A man, wearing a cloak, except that he is older with dark hair and dark eyes, calling for his prince as he tried to keep everything calm as much as possible, Prince Aegon continued his mumbling. Another man followed and you instantly recognized this one, Prince Aemond. They came to rescue Prince Aegon back, you think. Aemond saw you and he said something to another man before giving each other a nod as that man returned with Prince Aegon.
Aemond stood still and look at you while you try to look anywhere but him, he came closer and took your arm, “What are you doing here?” He sounds furious but why? “I simply wanted to enjoy a peaceful night, my prince" you answered him and look down to the floor, it seems to make him sound even more furious. “Peaceful night with a bunch of drunkards, have you gone mad? " his words offended you and you chose to walked away from him, he instantly followed you, you still don't understand why. You have always been smart enough to know what people wanted but not with him. He always managed to get you all confused and nervous, you can't take it no more. He called out your name and took your hand, the two of you entered a narrow alley, “You listen to your prince and return back now” how can he suddenly talks to you and orders you around now, he might be a prince but that's not enough to stop you. “I have enough!” you shouted at him, guilt follows you right after but it couldn't stop you now, “Why are you doing this to me? I don't understand. Last night you wouldn't even danced or enjoyed any seconds of my voice, you made me doubt myself!” tears forming through eyes and instead he just chuckled. “You really are a stupid girl” he took your hand and led you back to Red Keep.
It was a long walk of silence but he never lets go of your hand, you don't want him to either. But the confusion has already overwhelmed you so you just stopped walking, he turned to look at you, “What do you not like about me?” your voice is shaken. “Just tell me, please, is it my voice? or my songs?” You keep questioning him. He looks annoyed now, “No” short and plain. “Then what is it? Why are you so cold? so hard to understand?” you are on the verge of tears again, gods, how you hated when this happened. “Nothing, keep walking” his voice is still as though he didn't feel a thing. “No! there's something, it was your name day and you don't seem content”. He sighed again “And why is that? Who are you to care whether I am content or not on my name day?”. You are not sure what to say because he was right, you are not close to him, not even his family so why do you care so much. “I just wish to see you happy” that's all you said. His face softened, his hand still wrapped around yours, nothing was said after.
He escorted you back to your chamber and made sure you didn't leave again. When he returned to his chamber. He couldn't help but grin a little, “I just wish to see you happy” he replayed those words to himself. How thoughtful of you, never knowing of his cruelty. While the other ladies frightened at the sight of him. You only chose to come closer, begging to know more. Would it be possible for a prince to marry a lovely court singer like you? He wished to, as much as he hates to admit it but he is quite smitten by you. That was the very first night that he slept well to the sounds of your voice in his head. How he loved to hear more, he wondered if you could write a song for him and you. A song where boys and girls would blush at, a song which men and women would dance to at their wedding, a song that would pass down through centuries, and especially a song to numb away his bitter pain with your honeyed-voice, his little songbird.

“Don’t tell me you’re one of those people…”
genshin characters i feel would be swifties!!
if you think i’m wrong, i do not care. 🩷
warnings: none (idk how this tag stuff works)
Tumblr media
#1: Navia (obviously)
• One of my favorite parts of Fontaine’s release is how everyone went nuts when she came out especially on tiktok bc she gives such Taylor vibes. Navia Swift fr.
• The type of girlie who stays up till midnight whenever a new album is released so she can listen the second it comes out
• She def gives fearless and 1989 vibes, i firmly believe they are her favorite
• Her favorite songs are Style and You Belong With Me. You cannot tell me she doesn’t freak tf out whenever they play on the radio.
• She would absolutely have a taylor baking playlist for while she makes her signature macarons
Tumblr media
#2: Nilou
• Listen to me when I say all dancers are inherently swifties (i’m joking plz calm down)
• As a former competitive dancer:
taylor swift across the floor is >>>
• She absolutely loves dancing to taylor!!
• I feel like she’s be a speak now and 1989 girlie. also definitely appreciates midnights! (i might only feel this way because she was released roughly the same time as midnights was and i just associate two and two together?? anyways..)
• If they went, I just know her and Navia would have the most gorgeous fits for the eras tour
• the type of girl to stay in the studio after rehearsal is over, just practicing and dancing for fun. she loves to improv and make combos, especially to taylor. (imagine her dancing to epiphany??? like?? absolutely stunning)
Tumblr media
#3: Xingqiu
• just stay with me now- i don’t feel like he listens to her a ton, but since he’s such a little bookworm i feel like he loves her songs and lyrics with deeper meaning to them
• 100% a folklore/evermore/tortured poets kinda guy
• he’s the type of person who hyper analyzes the lyrics and deciphers all of the hidden meanings.
• he is no singer, but he has definitely tried his hand at writing taylor-esque lyrics in his free time.
• HUUUUGE fan of the folklore teenage love triangle
• #1 john mayer hater
• also definitely stans any songs that make fun of her exes
Tumblr media
#4: Barbara
• now i would just be crazy if i didn’t put her here
• taylor was definitely one of her big inspirations for starting to sing
• makes covers of her favorite songs and likes to perform them along with her own originals
• i feel like she’d really be a fan of taylor’s older albums, specifically fearless and red (her fav song is 100% all too well 10 minute version)
• imagine jean and barbara sister bonding time while they do each others hair and listen to their favorite songs together! ughhhh so cute
• i also feel like jean is a taylor appreciator, but doesn’t talk about it much because she feels as the acting grand master she doesn’t really have the time for things like that
Tumblr media
#5: Ayaka
• Similar to Xingqiu, I don’t feel like she’s an avid listener, but we know that Ayaka also enjoys poetry so i feel like she would really enjoy taylor’s lyricism
• loves songs like the archer and this is me trying (probably doesn’t tell anyone because sweetie is embarrassed, but i think she really likes some of the songs that are a little more sultry or flirtatious like dress and false god)
• after a long day of wearing her mask and presenting herself as inazuma’s noble lady like everyone expects, she loves to just relax in her room and listen to her faves :)
• yk those tiktok’s that are like: you’re pretty, pretty like (insert song)? she gives me that vibe but wildest dreams
Tumblr media
Bonus: Itto
hard to say if he’s actually a swiftie or not, but i just think it’s funny because he reminds me of those videos of post malone dancing on stage with guilty as sin? in the background and he would totally do that 💀 i have a whole collection saved they are so funny to me

When I was a kid I used to love Britney Spears. Her music videos fascinated me - they were colourful and they seemed to have a story to tell, so I adored watching them and making up my own stories that went along with what was happening on the screen. I didn't know English back then at all, so I didn't understand a word, but her songs brought me joy and I adored her.
When I got a bit older, around maybe 8 or 9, it turned out that liking Britney Spears is BAD TM. Because she is a stupid blonde, you see. My parents told me I was too smart to listen to trashy pop. They helped me get the CDs, yes, but they were always given to me with a 'eh, I hope you will grow out of it soon'. I was a smart kid, I shouldn't listen to stupid things.
My peers also mocked Britney, telling me all the other artists that were better to listen to, like Christina Aguilera. She was the smart, edgy blonde, so if I had to listen to silly songs, then I could at least pick a more mature, better option.
There were other artists I listened to, of course, it's not like Britney was the only one that spoke to me, but when I learned English enough to understand what the songs were about, I grew to like them more - the songs about trying to be your own person, about not accepting what other people tell you you should be. About parents deciding what you should do and like. They resonated with me, even though I was 'too smart' for that sort of music.
As most kids do, I started to hide it. When I was 10, maybe 11, I made a very good impression of being over it. I listened to Rammstein now, sometimes to Linkin Park. It was much better, according to many.
My dad told me he was proud of me when I told him I enjoyed Sabaton. "Finally, you grew out of your stupid era!"
I was sufficiently shamed by that point to never mention my Britney Spears phase. It was the butt of jokes at family dinners still, because it was such a funny thing for a kid to like silly music. Now that the kid was over it, we should mock it as viciously as possible. Just in case said kid wants to revert to the old ways.
To be completely honest, I copied that approach - my victim of choice was Adele. It was in high school already, and I absolutely abhorred her songs. I found them whiny, overhyped, unnecessarily tearful and man-oriented, they all sounded the same to my ears, so whenever someone said that their favourite song was something of Adele's, my first thought was 'but you are smart? Why her?'
Fast-forward to now, and with Britney Spears's book released, it turns out that listening to her is okay now. It's feminist. It's fine and even good to say outright that you are a fan. Because she is a victim of abuse now, so it's fine and morally correct to like her. Her songs and lyrics have value now. Curious.
The thing is, I truly did grow out from my Britney phase. I retain some sentiment for a few songs, but either it's simply not who I am anymore, or I successfully eradicated my interest in her to stop feeling ashamed whenever her name comes up in a conversation. Doesn't matter which one it is, the effect is the same.
However, now I am old enough to see that what was done to my Britney phase, I applied to other singers - Adele, Billie Eilish, to name a few. There is always a woman singer to hate, someone whose lyrics and music "you are too smart to enjoy".
There is no real take away from it really, all of that are just musings born out of an idle mind, but now I believe that songs are a bit like poetry - you either connect with it or you don't, either it touches you or it doesn't. One person will see themselves in Adele, someone else will find themselves mirrored in Billie Eilish, someone else feels seen whenever they listen to Mitski. It's a universal feeling we all experience, to like a song and think 'wow, this speaks to me!', we all just have different tastes and different experiences.
I just know that right now, I no longer want to be the person who says 'I thought you were smarter than this?' whenever someone shares their favourites.

artistic expression (woozi fic)
I'm thoroughly enjoying writing these. They’ve been like 20-minute fics when I see or hear something I like.
I’ve been writing forever and making art for the last decade, but I realize not everyone does the same to express themselves. Or believes they can’t.
w.c. 773 (fluff)
Jihoon overhears her talking to Soonyoung between snippets of songs.
She’d stopped at the studio on her way home from work with dinner. After eating, Jihoon had given her a little kiss to the head and went back to work. As she was about to leave, Soonyoung had popped in.
“You know, that would be a great song lyric,” Soonyoung comments.
She laughs. “Maybe.”
“Seriously. It completely encompasses…” When Soonyoung doesn’t finish the thought, Jihoon glances over his shoulder. Soonyoung is creating large circles with his hands, trying to encompass… something.
“Life?” she guesses when Soonyoung doesn’t say anything.
Soonyoung hums. “Yes, but it’s such a specific line to encompass life right now. Like the essence of kidult but in a more… poetic way.”
In the reflection of his computer monitor, Jihoon can see her shake her head. “You guys have a song for that.”
“But yours is… melancholic.”
“Melancholic?” she echoes.
Soonyoung chuckles. “Word of the day.”
“Song writing’s your guys’ thing. I’ll stick to policy documents and research papers.”
“But don’t you ever just want to write… fun stuff? Not that your stuff isn’t important or whatever—” The ‘whatever’ makes her snort in Jihoon’s favourite way that makes him smile. “—but what about all those poetic things going on in your head?”
“Poetic things?”
“Clearly you think about things.”
“Clearly.”
“So, why not express them? You can write.”
“I think I’m just better at appreciating the art than creating it,” she says, slinging her bag over her shoulder. She walks over to Jihoon and gives him a kiss on the head goodbye. When he grabs her wrist to stop her, she raises an eyebrow in response.
“I wanna ask you something,” he says as he drops his headphones around his neck.
Soonyoung gets the hint. He hugs her goodbye and pats Jihoon’s arm. “I’ll see you in the practice room.”
Once Soonyoung leaves, taking the leftovers with him, she meets Jihoon’s eye again. “What’s up?”
“Talk to me about life,” he says. He pulls her to stand in front of him, sliding his chair closer so she stands between his legs.
She blinks at the request. Resting her butt against his desk, she shakes her head, not understanding his question.
“Soonyoungie seems to think you have a way with words that you won’t share with the world.”
Rolling her eyes, she straightens up and readjusts her bag on her shoulder. “I think Soonyoung thinks everyone has an ability to artistically express themselves.”
Jihoon studies her expression. It’s not anger, not frustration. Disappointment feels the closest. “And you don’t?”
“When have you ever seen me artistically express myself, Hoonie?”
“Verbally,” he answers. It’s almost as if he was just waiting for her to ask him.
Another roll of her eyes. “The things I say to you in bed don’t exactly count.”
This makes him laugh. Her ability to joke means that she’s not that hurt. He laces their fingers together and she rests back against the desk. “Not just then. I mean, you’re able to express your thoughts and feelings in plain language. It’s a different kind of poetry.”
“That’s very kind of you.”
The emotion comes to him then: Bitterness.
“Would you want to be able to do this?”
“This…?”
Jihoon motions towards his desk, littered with song lyrics and half-finished thoughts.
She picks one up and her eyes go over the words. “Yeah. I would. Your stuff is fun to read. Mine is…”
“Boring,” Jihoon chuckles. He pulls her to his lap, relieving her of her bag. She sits comfortably in the space between his thighs, his arms around her as he shows her a couple of songs.
“Soonyoung’s right, you know.”
“About?”
Jihoon clicks open one song and then rifles through the papers on his desk for the one he’s looking for. He sets the paper down in front of her. Leaning his chest against her back, he peers around her to point at one particular verse.
“This was something you said to me a couple weeks ago.” He plays the song. “And it inspired me to write this.”
By the time he’s shown her the most recent songs her words have inspired, Jihoon swears she’s crying. But she won’t look at him and he can’t see her face properly from this angle.
“Jagi?”
She sniffles and then clears her throat. “Thank you.”
Jihoon kisses her shoulder. “I can help you express things artistically if you ever want that.”
“You’d do that?”
“Sure. I don’t think I’ve ever been useful in your work, but,” he gestures to his desk again, “this has you written all over it.”

thoughts on tortured poets:
my husband listened and he said he didn’t like all the songs sound the same. honestly this was my first big takeaway - maybe it’s because i’m still holding out for another album like folklore and evermore LOL but after my second listen through I realized that I…. kind of really liked it? like I enjoyed the fact that you’re supposed to focus on the lyrics - the poetry - and immersed myself in that and now i’m convinced that this is probably my favorite album of hers ever. the writing is gorgeous.
I like that there’s no driving point in the music, no climax. it’s very stare down at the floor at your shoes music and I think it’s very refreshing, in a heartbreaking kind of way.
i’m still digesting it and making me way through it another couple of times but here are some songs that made me think of aim & ignite:
1. who’s afraid of little old me?
2. the bolter
3. the prophecy (PAIN)
4. Cassandra

a deeply honest review of the tortured poets department
okay, so i will take this moment to preface that i am not a professional music journalist or anything like that--i'm just very interested in music, and i've grown up with taylor swift for quite a long time. i would also like to say that i think she is capable of making quite good art and that she is an exceptional songwriter, especially for someone who frequently writes alone or with a team of 1-3 close professional friends.
to be totally honest, this album is mediocre. i've seen a lot of blind swiftie praise for it (as per usual) and a whole lot of hate from people who don't seem like they've listened to more than one song (also pretty typical), and i just don't find either to be warranted. it's boring.
though it was perhaps emotionally difficult to parse through, nothing about this album feels like it was challenging for swift to write on a technical or skill-based level. she relies on her old songwriting tricks, which i think can be a good place to start, but nearly all of the tracks on this one feel like second drafts at best rather than songs that were poured over for weeks before she was happy with them.
there are also just. so many corny moments, beginning at the track titles. they lack the maturity that i was expecting from this album. i'm not one of those people who thinks work that claims to be "poetic" has to have an indie-ish sound to it by any means, but i think the lyrics themselves have to have a certain depth and richness to them. i've seen arguments that this sort of corniness in combination with the concept of poetry is sarcastic on swift's part, but even if that's true, it still feels like that just doesn't work or excuse mediocre and cringeworthy lyricism. which is certainly not all that's on this album, but it's there enough that it greatly takes away from my experience.
she also relies too heavily on longtime producer jack antonoff, who can't seem to do anything new or interesting with her work at this point in their collaboration. midnights felt like they just camped out in a studio together for 2 weeks and went "yessss that's so fire" at each other with no outside influence, and this feels the same way except they invited aaron dessner for the latter half and he did what he could to salvage it. the end result is a mix between 1989 2 and evermore 2. i truly feel like she needs someone in that studio with her who hates her to push her to reach something new creatively.
that being said, there are things i liked about it:
-i always enjoy the way swift incorporates turns of phrase and flips them on their heads, which is something she seems to love to do, and this album is full of that kind of wordplay (some of it stronger than others).
-i like the features she picked a lot more than i was expecting to, especially post malone. fortnight is an excellent title track, and he blends so seamlessly into the background.
-there is a lot of religious imagery that is a thread that runs throughout the album (one that is even stronger in the songs i specifically like).
-though many of her tongue-in-cheek moments fall exceptionally flat, several of them work quite well (for example, "is that a bad thing to say in a song?" from florida!!! or "lights camera bitch smile" from icdiwabh).
ultimately, i would say that i think this is a mixed bag album that could've been about 15 tracks shorter. it's not her worst work, and it's not a bad pop album, but it's definitely not her best. it falls far too in her comfort zone, and to me, that makes it only a 6.5/10 album. above average, but not by much. it's totally fine to make average music, that's what creates the average, but i have so much belief that she is capable of better because i have seen it.

I have thoughts on ttpd
And I don’t know where else to share them without my criticisms and qualms being written off as blind hatred so here goes
Quantity over quality was definitely the motto with this one. She said at one of the eras shows that this album was when she needed writing more than ever. That doesn’t however, mean that everything she wrote needed to be on this album. Part of what makes an album good is an artists ability to edit their songs into a cohesive work.
Going off of that last point: I blame the vault tracks. Swift and her team saw how much people loved the vault tracks and went overboard with the concept of “give the people more.” The vault tracks worked so well because they felt like a bonus. When the whole album feels like “vault tracks” it loses some of the allure.
The concept is pretty weak overall. The aesthetic that was used to market the album only fits about half of the songs. I was hoping for literary references beyond just name dropping various poets and artists but so far Cassandra is the closest that I can recall that actually references poetry. I’m sure there’s some connections I’m missing so please enlighten me, (my academic background is in art history, not literature).
I feel like conceptually there are at least two albums here. The first is the actual ttpd concept of poetic sad songs, and then there’s a second set of songs that feel much more modern and feel like they belong on a different album (Florida!!!, down bad, imgonnagetyouback, etc.). I wish she would’ve taken the double album concept all the way and grouped the songs into more cohesive narratives.
Imgonnagetyouback is the exact same idea as get him back! by Olivia Rodrigo. I just feel like there’s some irony there because didn’t Taylor sue Olivia for something similar (I don’t know the ins and outs of that whole situation so forgive me if I’m missing some nuance)? Not that two people can’t write about the same thing but something about these two songs in particular seems too similar. They don’t sound the same but specifically the lines “key his car… make him lunch” in Rodrigo’s and “be your wife … smash up your bike” in Swift’s are the exact same “domestic tasks/destroy vehicle” dichotomy. Idk man something isn’t quite right about the whole thing to me.
A lot of the lyrics do not fit the melodies AT ALL. so many lines feel oddly paced, either stretched out where they shouldn’t be or too many words crammed in. The melody should fit the lyrics and it’s just not happening in this album as a whole. So many of the lyrics are just too wordy and awkward. Poetry doesn’t need to be long to be good.
Some of the lyrics are just so bad that they take me out of the song. I’m sure anyone that’s read this far can think of a few instances that made them pause. Hearing the words “finance guy” in a song was absolutely jarring.
Overall I just feel like it’s a poor representation of her abilities. She’s shown that she can write better. Her other albums were better sonically. There’s just nothing about this that is phenomenal. Very few memorable songs. No standout radio hits. It’s not the worst album ever made but it’s just so mediocre.
This album was made for a specific type of fan; someone who is up to date on her personal life and will listen to find Easter eggs, someone who will buy all of the vinyls just to complete their collection, someone who will love these songs just because they are Taylor Swift songs. I think every fan can find a few songs they like but I’d be shocked if anyone could genuinely say that they enjoy every song on this album, or that they think this album is one of Taylor’s better releases.

Everything, everywhere is full of passion. It’s cheerful. Friendly. This is YEONJUN’s world.
Tumblr media
You brought a book of poetry for the gift exchange you held with the other members for your holiday Weverse Live.
YEONJUN: I’m not a heavy reader but I got inspired after seeing some nice quotes and poems on social media. And I thought it would be nice to show them to those who are having a hard time around me. I think I’m good at using wordplay in my lyrics but not so much at incorporating my emotions, so I thought poetry books might help.
The lyrics you wrote for the track “Farewell, Neverland” off the latest album are sentimental.
YEONJUN: And yet it wasn’t particularly difficult. I always watch a lot of movies and have a good imagination. My MBTI has N, after all. (laughs) I’ve had a rich imagination ever since I was young so I used to imagine myself as a movie character and act like one. I wrote the lyrics to “Farewell, Neverland” by picturing myself as one of the boys who wants to play with Peter Pan. They don’t want to grow up but they have no choice but to leave Neverland if they’re going to keep developing and moving forward. I wrote it from the perspective of resisting Peter Pan’s temptation.
Conversely, the lead single “Sugar Rush Ride” and the song “Devil by the Window” explore what temptation and giving into it looks like. I’d say you tried recording with some new vocal styles that you never used before.
YEONJUN: You know, if you’re tempting someone you don’t just say, (dryly) “Come here.” You have to say it in a sly and sexy voice. (laughs) So I went over the top for some parts, abandoning my normal self and getting into the role of the devil, then for other parts I really exaggerated my vocals and tried to make the expressions as strong as possible.
Tumblr media
What was it like writing lyrics for “Happy Fools” (feat. Coi Leray)? I was curious to see if there would be a moment you give into temptation, seeing as you’re usually so hardworking.YEONJUN: I really sympathize with the idea of wanting to have fun, so I kept that in mind while writing the lyrics. But, to be honest, even when I’ve had a hard time, the worst it ever gets is I can’t concentrate quite as well or I practice a little less. I never once completely gave up on anything. So you’re saying you’ve always done everything you have to. (laughs) Don’t you ever feel like blowing everything off, even just occasionally?YEONJUN: Even if I thought about it, I don’t think I could actually go through with it. It’s already such an inborn habit and just the way I work. What if you magically had one day where you’re allowed to live life however you want—a day where you won’t get tired for tomorrow no matter what you do and it won’t have any effect on all the effort you’ve put in so far?YEONJUN: (laughs) Could I have that? (After thinking it over) I’d probably just do something fun, I guess? Hang out with friends, go somewhere cool to listen to some music. But that’s not something I absolutely crave anyway. Why’s that?YEONJUN: I’m so ambitious and eager that it outweighs any inconveniences. This job is my pride and joy. I’m pretty easygoing but I also have a lot of dignity. (laughs) I want to keep feeling proud when it comes to my work. It’s interesting to see your photos in that sense. You usually aim for perfection, even under pressure, but you look so natural when you have your picture taken—like you don’t even notice anyone’s looking.YEONJUN: I always enjoy photoshoots. Today’s shoot for Weverse Magazine was no exception. I feel enough pressure on a day-to-day basis so I try to have some confidence when I’m doing a shoot. And anyway, it’s the real deal. It’s like how actors really try to become another person rather than just read lines from a script. It’s the same with me: When I’m doing a shoot or on stage, I’m not just making facial expressions and striking attractive poses—I’m usually trying to become the kind of person who fits in with the given mood.
Tumblr media
That helped make the Daydream version of the concept photos for the new album memorable. Whereas showing off your bare chest and back could’ve been burdensome, you make it look like a breeze, and you stuck out your tongue in a unique way.YEONJUN: I was okay with showing some skin. I think everything from the background to the outfits, hair and makeup were perfectly orchestrated to set the mood. I think they really helped sell the particular idea of dreaminess for the Daydream version. But I also worried that taking off my top would come across as leaning too hard into sex appeal. As I understood it, it was never meant to be like that. It should be really clear from how I’m sticking out my tongue, but it’s meant to be mischievous. Mysterious but mischievous. So I was trying to convey a mix of feelings. You worked yourself very naturally into the atmosphere of your concerts during last year’s ACT: LOVESICK world tour and at Lollapalooza. You really couldn’t hide your excitement over the festival atmosphere at Lollapalooza.YEONJUN: You’re right. It was a valuable time to reflect on why I do this line of work. I got started in this because of how much I love the stage. Is there an area you want to explore more of? In an earlier interview in Weverse Magazine, you said you wanted to try writing more intense lyrics, and you said in a vlog you recorded while in the US that you used all your energy on the Lollapalooza stage and even said, “This is what a performance is.”YEONJUN: We can’t do everything we want in the course of our everyday lives. There’s so many restrictions. But when it comes to the stage, I can do anything I want. So I think I want to do whatever I want to the fullest no matter what people say. That’s true for music, performing and photoshoots, too. So you must’ve been really energized while interacting with MOA from so many different countries.YEONJUN: It meant a lot because I’m the kind of person who wants to experience everything. I was especially amazed how the mood and energy differed between cities. I was impressed how calm and extremely focused on the concert itself they were in Japan, and then Southeast Asia they sang along really passionately to the songs and were jumping up and down. In the US they sang and danced in front of us however they wanted without feeling self-conscious. After Lollapalooza, I really thought I just want to be a massive rock star. (laughs) So I tried writing songs that everyone could dance to and have fun and just enjoy themselves to.
Tumblr media
You continuously contribute to the music and lyrics of the songs on your albums. Can we expect to hear some songs that are about your personal stories?YEONJUN: I still want to work on it a bit more before I reveal anything to MOA. I’m the type of person that cannot show if I’m not confident or if I’m not fully ready. (laughs) You’re quite the perfectionist. (laughs) Because of the nature of your job, though, it’s always the case that you have to have something to show by a specified time. How do you deal with that? I’m thinking especially about how you have to play many different roles, like when you performed “Lonely Boy (The tattoo on my ring finger)” at 2022 MAMA last year and the dance covers you did at 2022 SBS Gayo Daejeon.YEONJUN: In my personal opinion, none of those performances were perfect. I just tried to put on performances that were as close to perfection as possible. I just practiced as much as I could until time was up. I didn’t want to feel anxious right before I got up on stage and worry about whether I could do a good enough job. In the end, I tried my best and did it all without any mistakes. (laughs) I’m surprised someone with such a strong stage presence is so hard on himself. You garner a lot of attention, too: You earned the nickname 4th Gen It Boy and now have over 12 million followers on Instagram.YEONJUN: I do love myself and have high self-esteem, but apart from that, I’ve never felt fully satisfied with myself. I’m always finding something I could be doing better. Aside from the title you mentioned, I trained for this job long enough that I always feel like I need to be doing better.
Tumblr media
That makes me think of the lyrics to “Tinnitus (Wanna be a rock),” which you helped write. Do you ever feel like you’re “just a rock” after spending so much time thinking and putting in the effort?YEONJUN: I’m sure every artist has that feeling at some point. As an artist, I’m always following a big dream when I work, but sometimes when I see myself I feel like I’m not good enough and I feel useless—like I’m nothing. That’s what I was thinking about when I wrote those lyrics. So you’re always aiming higher.YEONJUN: I want to be a role model and to be able to have a good influence on people. My friend told me a really good story yesterday. Apparently, a friend of a friend is my fan. When that MOA saw I had written “study hard” when I signed their CD, that was enough to get past being bullied, study hard and make it into the university program this friend wanted. I just wrote that short message. When I heard that, I thought, I’m at a place now where I can change a person’s life. What about this job could be more rewarding than that? You don’t hold any prejudices and you respect everyone for who they are. For example, you wore a skirt and made a post saying boys can wear skirts too, and when you first saw iced tea with a shot of espresso and confirmed that that person ordered it that way on purpose, you responded, “Okay then, no problem.”YEONJUN: I try not to hold prejudices. I fell into some preconceived notions in the past, but the world keeps changing and there’s still a lot more that needs to change. So I took a careful look at myself, didn’t really like what I saw and thought I better not let myself get stuck in those mindsets. Are you always fully conscious of what’s happening around you? I recall on Weverse Live when HUENINGKAI was feeling camera-shy because of his messy hair but MOA really wanted to see him and you carefully smoothed over that situation.YEONJUN: I try but I don’t know if I’m doing a very good job. (laughs) I try to organize my thoughts by priority at least. I start by talking about what needs to be taken care of immediately and wait a little to bring up other things when there’s an opportunity. I also take each of the members’ styles into consideration. They’re all very different. (laughs) I felt a lot of pressure last year to get us more in sync and practicing more when we had to get a lot of performances ready in a short time because I tend to be ambitious about wanting to do a good job. But it takes some time for everyone to get on the same page and that’s just the way it is. So I talked about the most pressing issues first and waited to talk about the other parts till the next time and we got in sync that way.
Tumblr media
I imagine spending so much time together during the world tour must have made it a major turning point for the group, too.
YEONJUN: We definitely had more of a chance to talk. Things have always been good between us, but we got even better at being open with each other than before. I think it can actually be harder to be open with someone the more time you spend together and the closer you are. I tried to be more open, too, and we all tried really hard on the things we felt were important or necessary. That’s how we got better.
In an interview with GQ last year, you said, “We have to try harder so we can be extremely good.” That seems to be your default attitude toward both the other members and toward MOA.
YEONJUN: I think you can always do better, no matter how good you already are. I know I have my weaknesses but I can always do better despite that. I think, if you have your thoughts set on some specific standard, you’re done for. And I’m always YEONJUN from TOMORROW X TOGETHER before just YEONJUN. I couldn’t have done any of the things it took to get me to where I am today on my own. The label helped and because I have the other members and MOA with me, we can all shine brighter.
Is that why you’re always showing the people around you how grateful you are? You shared the heartfelt messages you wrote to the staff you work with on Weverse and you even got snacks for hosts Jjoonijjoon and the rest of SBS’s Inkigayo staff.
YEONJUN: I think it’s really important to be grateful. I really hate when I take things for granted. I think I’ll fail as both a person and as an artist the moment I start taking others for granted. We’re going to get more and more the more we grow, and I never want to forget that I can’t take those things for granted. I think I need to be a person first and an artist second.
Personally, the lyrics to “Tinnitus (Wanna be a rock)” made me think of the movie Everything Everywhere All at Once. If you could pick one version of yourself from the multiverse, like in the movie, which YEONJUN would you choose?
YEONJUN: Me? I’m just … I’m happy the way things are now. (laughs) I hope I would be a happy YEONJUN. If it’s good, it’s good. (laughs) I want the YEONJUN who lives in a world where everyone’s happy and worry-free.
I wonder if that happy YEONJUN is doing the same work that you do.
YEONJUN: Yep.

*Disclaimer: I'm brainrotting so hard I'm sorry. Feel free to ignore/don't answer this if you don't want to, I don't mean to dictate the way your AU should be
So... I came up with little lyrics for each song lol. They're very much sad boy era and they don't rhyme sometimes, but I like to think that these songs are just a way for them to let it all out, since they'll probably never share them with anybody.
Best Interviewer Now that the silence engulfs me And I'd kill for a single word Please talk all you want, I'll just listen I'm the best interviewer in the world
Birthday Card It's still sitting in my window Sometimes I can hear it tell me So many stories from the past I know there's no one here But I feel like I'm the one being watched
Quota of Self-Importance Did I make you feel less? Did I treat you poorly?
I guess we'll never know I guess I'll never know I bet you could answer these questions If only I dared to pose them to you
Nostalgia I find myself looking back At all those memories we made They're like little bread crumbs That lead me back to you again
Magnifying Glass 'Cause the Sun is shining bright today It's time to take out the glass And when we're done doing our magic We will burn this to the ground (This last rhyme is a direct reference to the song with the same name)
Compartmentalize I look around my mind, all I see are cabinet files They keep notes on everything I see It is funny though, you would think I'd be able to remember more And to forget what I wish I could
Where Are You Where are you? I ask myself (where are you?) It's a stupid question, too (and i know, i know) I'm well aware of where you are But it only matters where you're not (right here, right here
The President It's like a table with a short leg Uneven, unstable, useless I can find nothing to brace it And so like that it stays
I can't worry about that now 'Cause the clock still keeps ticking I have to take control now There's a new President in office
Bummer I keep on writing regardless Doesn't matter if it sucks What I am supposed to do otherwise? I'm just Ian from Smosh
Hope you enjoyed :D
THIS IS EVERYTHING TO ME i literally. Dollar Bin #24: The Doors
Tumblr media
Like every other wishing-he-were-cool Southern California white boy born in the mid-to-late 70's, I had a big Doors phase in 1990. In the year leading up to Oliver Stone's ridiculously silly, TV flinging, film I spent 10 rich months in the following fashion:
First, I copied a friend's father's double CD Door's Greatest Hits collection (the one with Jim Morrison's fabulous pecks on the cover). I was discovering music after comic books and I memorized every glorious moment.
Next, I tracked down the band's four easily accessible full albums via another friend's Costco (or was it still called Price Club at that point?) Nice Price 4 Pack and memorized all of that too, even though I found parts of Waiting For The Sun dull and much of LA Woman sorta gross.
Then, I decided that Not To Touch The Earth was actually their best song and that anyone who only knew the band's greatest hits was a poser.
Next, I enjoyed listening to my father's tall tales about how The Doors had once lived on the strand in Manhattan Beach (my hometown) and were often practicing in their garage when my dad passed by. He also claimed that Morrison had worked for him for one single day as a house painter (my father's trade) but that Jim had been too nuts to keep on the payroll. At other points in my dad's joyful imagination Charles Manson and Ginger Baker had also been on past crews; his lies, which were specifically designed to entertain us, led us to mock and roll our eyes at him when he sincerely claimed that one of his past painters, Robbie Rodgers, actually had gone on to be a relatively successful musician. But then dad scored us tickets and we went to see the dude's Reggae/slasher band, War Called Peace, open for Yellowman; it was totally nuts, and Robbie told us that my dad had changed his life.
After that, I learned of the existence of The Soft Parade and swore to myself that I'd never listen to it. My heroes, horrifyingly, had once SOLD OUT!
Next, I watched Apocalypse Now over and over, daydreaming of the day I'd get my own hands on The End's master tapes and undercover even more of Morrison's Oedipal ranting.
(All the while I had no idea what Oedipal actually meant.)
Throughout it all, I feverishly followed Robert Hilburn's updates in the LA Times on the back and forth on set about whether or not Val Kilmore would sing or lip sync in the upcoming film.
Shortly thereafter, I shook my fist in fury when Billy Idol dared to cover LA Woman. The poser!
That drove me to the library, where I got Riders on the Storm, Jim Densmore's Morrison bio. I read it feverishly, taking mental notes on how I too would one day successfully avoid the draft by demonstrating Morrison-level savvy madness.
Midway through Densmore's self-aggrandizing tome, I bought a copy of Wilderness, Morrison's slim and posthumous published poetry collection, and carried it around with me together with my copy of the Tao Te Ching, convinced that they were the two true holy books. Anyone who thought otherwise I recognized as a poser.
All the while, I spent a lot of time thinking about how Ray Manzarek doubled as the band's bass player and pianist all at the same time on one keyboard. I viewed him as Einstein with a chainsaw.
Somewhere along the way, I sought out an ancient tape copy of a disco sounding album the band made after Jim's death and noted that no one in the band had made meaningful music ever since. And so I grew slightly concerned that maybe my heroes were secretly lame.
But I still stood in line for opening night of the film and smugly mocked everyone else in line with me as a poser. Clearly, none of them knew the secret lyric, edited out, after She Gets! on Break on Through...
And I thought the movie was pretty cool!
Then I proceeded to grow sick of the whole thing - the band and everything about them was suddenly far too mainstream for my superior tastes - and I decided anyone who liked The Doors on any level was a poser. Lou Reed and Bob Dylan were all that mattered.
Then a cool older kid played me Peace Frog and I realized I'd missed a whole album (damn Costco!). So I decided The Doors were cool again for about 15 minutes.
Then, 10 months after the whole thing had started, I moved on for good.
But that's not entirely true. Years and year later, I sang my kids to sleep with The Spy and The Crystal Ship; and I can still can almost recite Morrison's poem about some dude burning leaves. Now that I summon it from the internet and read it again I still think it's pretty great:
A man rakes leaves into
a heap in his yard, a pile,
& leans on his rake &
burns them utterly.
The fragrance fills the forest
children pause & heed the
smell, which will become
nostalgia in several years
But now, I have to ask, how does one even go about listening to The Doors with any objectivity 33 years after they became the world's biggest band for a moment and 50 years after Morrison's death? I mean there's a 15 year old hipster in the high school where I teach who still wears a t-shirt with Morrison on it. I don't know if objectivity can be achieved.
But I'm giving it a shot right now as I write this.
My copy of their debut, self-titled, album is an original print supposedly, and the vinyl sure sounds like it's creeping up on its 60th birthday. Crackling thunder, seemingly borrowed from Riders on the Storm, buzzels and pops throughout. But the whole record sounds great that way, like it too was taken from the Ancient Gallery and WALKED ON DOWN THE HALL!
Fair reader, here's what I think: if I try hard and strip back all the nonsense I know about poor Jim and the band, then I'm left with what is elemental music.
Sure there's some silly stuff to be found: Morrison's lyric "specialize in having fun" from Take It As It Comes is, and always has been, embarrassing, along with basically all the lyrics to Light My Fire. And I don't really know that the organ's drunk circus vibe in Alabama Song holds up.
But listen to Manzarek spill every coin in the band's copious wallet on Take It As It Comes; remember just how cool the wandering guitar intro still is on The End, not to mention the slapping, rippling, pick me up 3/4 of the way through that wandering track; appreciate just how unhinged Morrison's screaming holler is on Back Door Man; ride on the perfect Crystal Ship. And for god's sake, just sit back and listen to Light My Fire.
youtube
What if we simply thought of The Doors alongside their actual peers from 66-71: Love, Buffalo Springfield, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead? What if we slowed down and remembered that the band did everything they did in under 5 years? What if we remembered, at the same time, just how much Stephen Stills still sucks? And what if we set aside for good just how damn magnetic poor Jim was? What if we just listened to The Doors?
I encourage you to give it a shot. Drop the needle on The Doors debut once a season; ride the King's Highway west; catch all the weird scenes in the goldmine. You too will wish The Doors practiced in a garage down your street.
-------------
Update! After posting this, my famous brother sent me this photo of Morrison. He's actually in Manhattan Beach!
Tumblr media
I think my father, who, come to think of it, looked a hell of a lot like Morrison at that point, is just outside the frame, striding away after firing his ass. Rest in peace Jim.
