what i want is a site that lists every single published paper but cataloged by things like area and questions. like you'd be able to go to 'human body -> head -> brain -> function' and see all the papers exploring how the brain works with summaries on methodology and sample size (if relevant) along with general summaries of the topic going over what we current know. just something that would let you explore the sum of human knowledge in a way that is natural and fun to explore around but easy to get into initially and based around published papers. i understand this is a lot to ask but i'm sure if you got enough people together you could figure it out
#just spitballing here#not sure how the categories would work but that'd be figured out when actually testing prototypes#like i'm sure i could make a site capable of this#but the challenge is really all the time youd need to find all the papers and summarise everything#dont even need the raw papers just references and summarization#a woman can dream#lizabeth talkabeth#science

Dominante Imp S/O x Millie & Moxxie.
Meeting the boss.

(This is a continuation of my previous dominant imp x M&M.)
In the five or so months you'd been together youd gotten a very mixed idea of who there boss was. Millie painted him as a lovable goof who would push boundaries on the regular.
Moxxie on the other hand, spoke as though he was a pervert Stalker who had it out for him.
Of course you challenged both of them, asked where he'd been for the last five months of he were a stalker and why Moxxie hated him so much if he were a harmless goofball.
Moxxie tells you Blitzø had been unusually busy as of late, with both work and Stolas.
Which was lucky, because Moxxie wasn't sure how you'd react if you found a strange Imp in the apartment.
So instead they decide it would be better if you met him properly, instead of finding him hiding in your fridge.
So the next day they bring you along to the I.M.P offices. Both Millie and Moxxie had mixed feelings about this meeting.
They weren't sure how Blitzø would react, and then they weren't sure how you'd react to his reaction.
Making it to the office, the two gave you a series of warnings about how to approach the subject.
You dismissed there concerns, I mean you could easily take on six sinners at once without breaking a sweat. If Blitzø wanted to dance, youd dance.
So entering the office, you were met with the young hellhound'et that you instantly realised was the source of so much of Mixxie stress.
You swallowed a scowl before going up to greet her. 'You must be Loona. I've heard... a lot about you.'
Loona barely gave you a glance before going back to her phone. Millie came up besides you and asked if Blitzø was in yet.
Loona just gave a lazy nod towards a door to her right.
Millie thanked the hellhound before giving you a kiss and going to find him.
That seemed to get Loona's attention, looking at you she raised an eyebrow.
'Wondering what that was?' You asked nonchalantly. Loona glanced over the Moxxie and smirked. 'Oh yeah.'
Turning to her you smiled back, 'Well im not one to kiss and tell, but basically, for the past five or so months I've been the third partner in our little party.'
'No. Fucking. Way.' She said incredulously before bursting into laughter. 'So Moxxie really is a cuck.'
You instantly soured at her words before slaming your hands on her desk. 'Lets get something clear, young lady. Me, Moxxie and Millie are a couple, eh, I mean triad. We are in a relationship, alright.'
Reaching into your coat you pulled out a long yellow envelope. 'Simply put, I'm going to be around frequently as of starting immediately. And from what I've heard you relish in making the lifes of others as hard as possible.' You waited a moment for Loonas reaching. The hellhound just kind of nodding her head.
'So in order to keep our relationship civil, I'm going to bribe you.' Loona perked up at that. 'Bribe me with what?' She asked, eyebrow raised.
'This' you told her, handing over the envelope.
Taking the envelope, she pulled out two pieces of paper. Her eyes bulged 'Holy shit are these-'
'F#ck you dad, tickets? Yes.' You cut in, Snatching them out of her hands. Twirling them around your fingers you told her 'Not just tickets, VIP tickets.' You held the tickest up, showing the Gold film over them.
The feminine hellhounds eyes growing to animated proportions.
'I was gonna take the pair out, but couldn't find an extra ticket. So there all yours. IF. You play nice. Do we have a deal?'
Loona thought for a long minute before reply. 'Fine. I'll try to play nice.'
'You do more then try.' You told her as you handed her the tickets.
Just as you let them go, the door to your left burst open.
'Alright where is this guy' the imp that you could only assume was Blitzø.
You stepped forward, Blitzø's attention falling on you. 'Okay, so Millie here says she wants to introduce me to someone important and I'm guessing that's you.'
Sticking your hand out you told him 'Yes I believe so. You must be Blitzø, ive heard... Interesting things about you.'
Blitzø took your hand, giving it a hearty shake. 'Well im a pretty interesting guy.'
You chuckled at that, before Millie came up behind you and wrapped her arms around your chest.
Going ridged you were about to turn around and ask what Millie was doing, when you felt someone grab your hand.
Looking to your right you found Moxxie holding your hand, an innocent little smile across his face.
You were about to ask him what he's doing when it strikes you. Looking over to Millie, you find her wearing a devious little smile. Looking back Moxxie you find him wearing a similar, if not slightly more anxious smile.
'Oh you little bastards, didn't want to make it too easy for me aye?' Millie whispered back in that sexy southern drawl, 'Nope.'
Chuckling you tell them 'You are gonna pay for this tonight.'
Looking back to Blitzø, I find a very confused Imp staring at me. 'Whats going on?' He asked, obviously suspicious.
'W-well, you see. For the last five months or so Me, Millie and Moxxie have kinda... sorta... been in a relationship.'
You leaned back a little, waiting for his reaction. It takes a minute before he screams 'What!'
You pull back, putting yourself between Blitzø and the pair.
Shrugged of the pairs touch, you repeated yourself. 'Me and your two employees are in a relationship.'
Blitzø balled his fists before slaming them the table. 'For fucks sake!' He screamed. 'Three years and this fucker lives out my fantasy.'
You look at the Imp unsure how to respond, but before you could you heard Moxxie speak up. 'Fantasy?' He asked behind you.
Blitzø chuckled, rubbing the back of his neck. 'Well I mean, surely it's not a secret I've kinda had a thing for you guys for a while.'
'Eww' Loona muttered, looking up from her phone.
Turning around you were quickly pulled forward, Blitzø wrapping his arm around your neck.
'So tell me, Uuh, what was your name again?' He asked. '(Y/N)' you replied.
'Aah, yes of course. So (Y/N), tell me what's it like? ' you raised an eyebrow, unsure what he meant. 'What's what like?'
'You know, the two of them... in bed?' He wagged his eyebrows at the end. You instantly sobered up.
Pulling your arm off your shoulder you stepped away from him. 'Sorry buddy, but that's between me and the two of them.'
Blitzø blew it off, wrapping his arm around your shoulder again. 'Come on, just give me a few details. Tell me, Is Moxxie a total bottom or can he dom.'
At this point you were done with his antics and practically threw his arm off of you.
'Listen, I get it, Moxxie and Millie have both told me you don't really do "Boundries" but our relationship is just that, Ours. You wanna hang out at work or go out for drinks, no problem.'
You turned serious 'But in our home, unless your invited. I don't wanna see you there.'
Blitzø wore a smirk , a smirk Id seen a hundred times over. The cocky little shit was gonna test me.
'Really?' He asked, smirk growing. I chuckled back, 'Yeah, really.'
Turing to him you told him 'I get it, your a killer, assassin for hire i get really. You kill people for a living.' You slipped a hand into your pocket, 'But do you know what I do?'
Blitzø just shook his head. 'I'm a bouncer, ya know what that means.' You ask him.
'You bounce things?' He asked dripping with sarcasm. You gave a dry chuckle back before gripping the back of his neck.
'My job is to put smartasses like you in there place. There place being on the curb, missing a few teeth.'
Blitzø's smirk grew a little larger, a little anger in his eyes. And before you knew it, he swung at you. His left arm swung in a sloppy haymaker.
Of course you were to quick, and easily dodged it, only to return with a proper haymaker. Although your haymaker came with a shiny set of brass knuckles, courtesy of your right pocket.
Blitzø went down, with one punch, like a sack of rocks.
You stepped back, taking a look at the now unconscious Imp. You could see a large bruise beginning to form on the left side of his face.
Moxxie and Millie came up besides you, looking down at the Imp. 'Bout time someone knocked some sense into him.' Moxxie grumbled.
'Mox he's our boss!' Millie scolded her husband. 'No. He's right.' You cut in, 'play stupid games, win stupid prizes and your boss chose to play a very stupid game.'
It took about an hour before he woke up, still on the floor he released a long groan before sitting up.
You walked up to him, coffee in hand before squatting down and checking his cheek.
'Hey there champ, good nap?' You ask, feeling particularly smug.
Blitzø rubbed his face, groaning out 'You get the make and model on the that Truck that hit me.'
You chuckled, 'No I did not. But I'm sure it would be happy to come right on back, unless that is, you've learnt your lesson?'
Blitzø looked up at you, the implications of your words sinking in. His eyes shifted across the room, then onto you.
'Yeah' he said, nodding his head 'lesson learnt.' Handing him the coffee you helped him to his feet.
'Good boy.' You told him before calling Millie and Moxxie over.
Steering the two towards the door you turn to Blitzø and ask, 'Its alright if they take the day off, aye Boss?'
Blitzø just gave a weak little thumbs up before turning and heading for his office.
Turning back to the pair, you leaned into Moxxie's ear and whispered 'Now who do I need to punish for that little scheme back there.'

Baby Winchester 2021
A/N: gift fic for @rileynicole1967. Merry Christmas! Thank you for being such a huge supporter, and for all of your kind words. I hope you like it. I dont have a laptop anymore so this is posted from my phone, hope the format is alright.
Summary: Reader finds out she's pregnant, and tells Dean in a cute way.
Warnings: fluff, puking, pregnancy, mention of sex, a tiny bit of angst but youd have to really watch for it.
W/C: 1.5k
This is also kind of a fix it fic for the season finale but I warped the time to be close to Christmas.
Excusing yourself from Thanksgiving dinner, after taking a bite of a meal your boyfriend spent hours to prepare, almost made you feel as horrible as the realization that the spontaneous sickness was accompanied by an AWOL period.
You let it slide, blaming the uneasy feeling on those intrusive thoughts, the worries that slip in and mix with hopes, turning into an anxious dream. A dream that involved having a family with Dean.
While you never had that whole marriage and kids conversation with him, you know that somewhere deep inside of him is a craving to nurture and care for a child of his own.
The way he talked about his past with Lisa and Ben was one giveaway, but when the two of you had sex he was careless, and so were you. One of you would courteously offer up the use of a condom, while the other would hear the suggestion with one ear, muttering an "oh, yeah, we probably should," between kisses, but the intention was already lost on the both of you.Â
It was like under the surface of "we can't have a kid, we're hunters,"there was a shared hope that maybe it would just happen, and it would become part of the challenges you take on in day to day life. Wouldn't really even be much of a challenge, other than keeping the kid safe, but what safer of a place than a bunker?
You'd be lying if you said you hadn't considered the thought, even if just for a daydream. It was a scary thought, raising a baby in this world, let alone in your world, but regardless, you wanted it.Â
Five days from Christmas, another period hadn't come. Sitting on the toilet you cover your eyes with your hands, pressing a bit deeper than you should, hardly able to control the bounce in your leg. On the floor in front of you is a pregnancy test, your heart racing too fast for you to watch it as it decides your future.Â
The confliction you feel is enough on its own. The one hand, excitement, the other, fear; a hope for both positive and negative to show up on that little stick.Â
Thinking back on the symptoms you'd read online they all seemed to line up with normal PMS symptoms. Your breasts were sore and heavy, but you've never examined them enough to know if they're really changing. You've been nauseous, even puking, but often that's not outside of PMS either. The only thing that really screamed 'pregnant' was your two missed periods⌠until you open your eyes to a test with two pink lines.Â
With shaky hands you bend forward to pick it up, feeling like every sense has been numbed and magnified at once, like your eyes are playing tricks on you. Your body throws out a nervous chuckle, re-reading the test like you're studying for a final before allowing yourself to actually smile. Panic and excitement fills you but you ride out the high, allowing it to consume you for a moment before planning your next move.Â
Slipping the test in your bra between your breasts, you throw the box it came in into an empty metal trash bin, setting it on fire to hide the evidence. Dean will find out eventually, but it has to be perfect.Â
You already had a world of ideas on how to tell him, and with Christmas just days away, the perfect time. You drive to the craft store to see what you could put together.Â
Walking down the aisle you turn to another and see blank christmas ornaments to decorate. Something inside of you screams, thousands of images popping into your head of what you could do with some paint and an ornament. Grabbing a present shaped ornament you head over to the paint section. You pick up a couple small gift bags and stuffing paper.Â
Leaving the bag in your car, you walk through the door to see the boys are decorating the bunker with random strings of light and tinsel.Â
"Looks great," you smile "now all we need is a tree."Â
"Well now that you're home we can go get one," Dean smiles, walking over to kiss you on the cheek.Â
You drove to all of the lots in Lebanon, all of which sold out of their best trees and left with the charlie brown's. Both Sam and Dean turned to you at each one with questions in their eyes, and you'd just shake your head. There's no way you'd let a three foot tree sit in a building as beautiful as the bunker. You'd find the perfect one, it just needed to take some time. That's when Dean suggested a different place.Â
He drove the three of you to a secluded woods, opening the trunk for a saw.Â
With wide eyes and a hidden smile, you jump out, Sam following.Â
"You're gonna cut one down?" you laugh.Â
Dean shrugs, lifting the saw to examine it. Smiling, he looks at Sam, "give me a hand with this will you?" he says, nodding to the other saw that sits in the trunk.Â
While the boys decorated the tree, you found it the perfect opportunity to sneak away and decorate your ornament. You slip into your car for the bag and run to a room you could lock, starting right away.
On Christmas morning, Dean woke you with a warm homemade peppermint mocha. The things that man could do in the kitchen made your head spin, or maybe it was the little life growing inside of you that made you so dizzy.Â
You hurriedly set the coffee on the nightstand and run to the bathroom, puking up the sweet, peppermint dream in moments.Â
Dean is quick to your side, kneeling down with his hand on your back, rubbing comforting circles.Â
"Are you okay?" he asks, and you can only nod. "Was it too much peppermint?"
You shake your head with a chuckle, wiping your lips with toilet paper before spitting into the toilet and flushing it all away.Â
"No, the coffee is great," you smile, turning to rinse your mouth out and brush your teeth, "I just don't think I ate enough yesterday," you say, mouth full of toothpaste but knowing it will be the last lie you have to tell him about the showing symptoms.Â
You walk out and accompany them as Sam pulls a gift from the tree and hands it to Dean. Dean smiles as you go to sit next to him.Â
"Oh!" you say with your best attempt at faking surprise, "I forgot an ornament" you say, barely able to conceal your smile.Â
You pull it from your pocket and hand it to Dean, stifling a giggle.Â
He smiles, "sure thing," he says, reaching for it.Â
It takes him a few steps to look at it, but even with his back turned to you you know when he reads it. He freezes, staring down at the golden letters that read: Baby Winchester 2021.Â
"What?" he says, whipping around to face you, and you just smile. Sam is alert, looking up from his phone as if Dean's voice startled him into the moment. Dean's face is tense, but he relaxes it to a smile, "what?"he says again, more excitedly, "are you serious?" he says in a laugh.Â
Sam stands and walks to Dean's side, reading the ornament over his shoulder, "no way!" he smiles.Â
You laugh, standing to grab the gift bag from under the tree with the test in it.Â
"I'm serious," you say, giving him the little gift bag.Â
Dean pulls the test out, Sam still at his side and when he looks at those little pink lines his face flushes, tears in the corners of his eyes threaten to come down. Sam is quick to run to you, wrapping you in a bear hug, saying congratulations before both of you have your arms wrapped around Dean.Â
There's silence for a moment, and you know what it means just by looking in their eyes. In their minds, just last week they were fighting mime vampires, the hunt almost getting away with Dean's life had he not missed the nail in the wall and fell backwards instead, and this week, they're expecting a baby. A baby in a world with vampires, and ghosts, and creatures that want you all dead.Â
You break the silence, "I know," you say almost somberly.Â
"What are we gonna do?" Dean asks, fear in his voice.Â
"We're gonna do what we always do. We're gonna keep fighting, but now, we'll be fighting for this little guy," you say, hand around your stomach.Â
Dean wipes the tear from his eye before it can hit his cheek and wraps his arms around you in a hug, Sam joining in shortly after in an embrace you wish you could stay in forever.Â
Sure, it's going to be difficult raising a baby in a hunter family, but with these two goons by your side, you wouldn't have it anyway else.Â

Magic and Miracles and BEYOND Chapter 4

Ok, so for those who donât know I face cast Miracle Laurie as Hazel Stevens, Titus Drautosâ love interest (*cough* love of his life *cough*) and in the upper right hand corner is my face cast for Ada, @the-immortal-marshal âs OC, she gave me Adaâs particulars forever ago so now Iâve just finally face cast her. And we have TADA I finally found a face I liked for Charlotte Stevens. Hazelâs sister who is of African American and Chinese decent. And I am OBSESSED with Empresses in the Palace which is a six episode long mini series that USED to be on Netflix, you can find it on Amazon Prime video now. And there is a lot of symbolism from that show that Iâve taken and run wild with because in this fic Gilgamesh (who I have taken so many liberties with) is a Chinese drug lord who thinks of himself as an Emperor and calls Charlotte his Empress. And Cor is obsessed with taking him down (like he is in the canon-verse).Â
Ok so you can read it here -> AO3 or below. Tumblr, be cool, keep it under a cut.Â
Magic and Miracles and BEYOND
Chapter 4
âOk, I stand corrected, this is my favorite house.â Selena announced as she came into the mansion in California wine country that was styled in a blend of Italianate, Spanish and Mediterranean. With itâs overall warm tones and clay tile roof. She fell head over heels in love with it.
âKnew it would be,â Ravus beamed.
âI want our house to be exactly like this.â Selena urged Ravus who chuckled.
âYeah, I figured as much.â Ravus nodded in agreement, having figured that the moment they hit the road.
âYeah, you can keep the house on the coast Luna, I love that location but I love and adore this house and the vineyards are just...spectacular. Itâs so beautiful I think Iâm gonna cry.â Selena teased herself as her eyes actually started to water which only got Ravus to pull her into his embrace and kiss the crown of her head. Â
âWell Ravus did buy you that place up the coast so youâre only a stroll down the beach away.â Luna teased her.
âYeah,â Selena sighed wistfully before she gave Ravus a quick peck on the lips before she had him really show her around.
âHoly shit!â Selena exclaimed when she saw the wine cellar.
âYeah, this wine cellar alone is worth as much as the actual house I think.â Ravus speculated.
âItâs all dry isnât it?â Selena asked in disappointment.
âActually, no,â Ravus began as he hunted through the cellar. âYes! This Darling, is ice wine. And it is exceptionally sweet.â Ravus said as he handed her a little mini bottle.
âShould we chill this first?â Selena asked as she looked it over.
âYes, yes we should.â Ravus nodded as he used a special wine bottle carrier box to put in a half dozen bottles in, going through the rows picking out different ones before filling the box full and putting it down before getting another before he turned the corner and it was like it kept expanding, Ravus going through the bottles like anyone would go through a library to look at books.
âDoes it ever end? I could get lost in here.â Selena teased as Ravus grinned but kept his eyes moving through all the labels.
âYou could.â Ravus answered but only half teasing himself before his phone went off.
âYeah?â Ravus answered.
âWhere are you?â Luna asked.
âIn the wine cellar?â Ravus answered.
âWhere at in the wine cellar?â Luna asked.
âIâm at the Rieslings, just about to head into the Moscatos. I already handed Darling some ice wines.â Ravus answered.
âOoh, could you get me my favorite please?â Luna requested.
âSure, what does Jock Strap want?â Ravus asked.
âOh heâs found the bar, heâs good.â Luna snorted a laugh.
âWell then get me my favorite.â Ravus insisted.
âAlready gotten.â Luna reassured him.
âThanks, when you guys figure out what to get for dinner call me back.â Ravus urged his sister.
âYup.â Luna nodded. Â
âThatâs really kind of sad that the house is so big, you have to call each other on your phones to talk to each other.â Selena teased as she leaned up against a brick wall and gave him a giddy smile.
âOh trust me, once we start our family, youâll be happy itâs as big as it is, in fact I think youâll love it down here because itâll be the one part of the house where the kids wonât be allowed to play and youâll have some nice âquiet mommy timeâ.â Ravus gently teased her with a look that had Selena wishing she could speed up time just to get to that and she just couldnât help but pull him away from the wines to pull him flush with her to kiss him deeply.
âCanât wait.â Selena purred when they broke for air and Ravus put the box down but only to allow him to pin her to the brick wall behind her before he picked her up so that her legs wrapped around his waist and her arms wrapped around his shoulders as he slipped her panties to the side since she was wearing a sundress as he unzipped his shorts and quickly entered her and moaned with her.
âI can, itâll be worth the wait. I promise.â Ravus beamed at her.
âAww,â Selena fawned.
Meanwhile Hazel and Titus were about to get ready to go to the store when Hazel checked her phone for the time before the screen went haywire for a moment as Titusâ phone did the same before both her phone and Titusâ phone turned themselves off and wouldnât turn back on and Hazel inhaled sharply as her eyes went wide with terror because she knew what was going to happen next.
âTitus, you either need to get to the car right now or you need to get into my bathroom and donât come out unless I come in and get you.â Hazel immediately ordered and Titus blinked in surprise when he saw how terrified she suddenly looked.
âWhat are you talking about?â Titus asked.
âNo time to explain, here.â Hazel decided for him before she seemed to pull a gun out from under her breakfast bar and put it into his hand and shoved him into the bathroom.
âSit right here, donât move, donât make a sound and shoot anyone but me who tries to come in.â Hazel ordered, keeping her voice whisper quiet but the hiss to her voice put him on edge before Hazel quickly locked the bathroom and quickly ran to her door and pulled out another hand gun and watched through the keyhole as Charlotte and two body guards came walking purposefully down the hallway, each body guard taking up an end to the hall to leave Charlotte to approach Hazelâs door alone before she knocked her special knock.
âPlease tell me youâve come to say goodbye.â Hazel told her sister in Mandarin when she opened the door for her sister, her gun visible at her side as Charlotte came strutting into Hazelâs apartment as Hazel shut the door behind her as she warily watched her sister.
âI came with a warning.â Charlotte began and Hazelâs stomach dropped. âYou should go out to dinner tonight.â Charlotte suggested.
âWhere and with who?â Hazelâs eyes narrowed suspiciously.
âIt doesnât matter where but I think youâll know with who.â Charlotte grinned as she laid a manila envelope on the counter.
âWhat part of âI never want to be involvedâ is hard to understand?â Hazel bit out.
âItâs Heavenâs wish, either serve the warning or you can try to Witchhazel.â Charlotte returned coolly and Hazelâs jaw clenched. âYour choice.â Charlotte shrugged before she stood in front of Hazel with a challenging smirk before hugging her sister before Hazel begrudgingly returned it.
âWhy canât you both go back to Hong Kong? At least youâd be safer there.â Hazel asked as she hugged her sister tighter, always feeling like she was seeing her sister for the last time when her sister came to her like this.
âSoon.â Charlotte answered and Hazel knew that was the closest to a straight answer she could ever get from Charlotte.
âOk.â Hazel whispered.
âNow tell Titus hi for me and to keep his nose out of our business.â Charlotte offered in English as she let go of her sister and left, snapping her fingers once she was in the hallway before both henchmen were back at her side as she left the building as Hazel blew out a shaky breath as her cheeks burned as she put the gun back into itâs hiding spot and went over to the manila envelope and opened it to find a tiny flash drive and found 50 thousand dollars with it. Hazel just huffed and shook her head. She took the money out and when she did, she found âWarhorn Lionâ written on a piece of yellow paper that almost looked and felt like tissue paper but was in fact a recreation of the paper used by Chinese Emperors to write edicts and orders on- on the inside of the envelope in Mandarin calligraphy and Hazel just closed her eyes and fought not to cry. Â
âShit.â Hazel hissed as she got gloves on and took it out and folded it carefully, damning her hands for shaking. At least it wasnât Titusâ name. She put the paper and the flash drive into a new envelope and into her purse before she put the money into her lock box and once she was done she took her gloves off and threw them away before she knocked on the door to the bathroom off her bedroom where she had put Titus.
âItâs safe now Baby.â Hazel called out softly as she unlocked the door and opened it to find Titus still sitting in the same spot she left him in.
âWhat the fuck is going on?â Titus demanded as he stood up and stared at her incredulously.
âIf I answered that, Iâd have to kill you myself.â Hazel answered defeated-ly as she took her gun back to put it away.
âWhat kind of convoluted clandestine bullshit is that?!â Titus spat angrily as he followed her and took note of where it had come from in the first place, having sat right there before and not having the smallest clue it had been there the whole time.
âThe kind of convoluted clandestine bullshit that will get you killed, moreover itâs the kind of convoluted clandestine bullshit that puts car bombs under cars and straps C4 to someoneâs chest and tells them to walk into hospitals and schools with the power to bring anyone to their knees before it lops off their heads, that kind. The kind that already knows your name, where you work, your routines, the truck you drive and where you are at all times. The kind thatâs kept a tail on me since I went to college, the kind that has already buried the last nosy boyfriend. So do yourself a favor if you want to live and let it go and never, ever breathe a word of this ever again. This is your one warning. The next time you bring this up, that sniper on that roof right over there will shoot you and Iâll have to change the carpet again because blood doesnât come out from white carpet well.â Hazel snarled as she pointed her finger into his chest, the tip digging into his flesh hard every time she said the word âyouâ as tears flowed freely from her eyes as her expression was a pleading one as Titus just stared in shock at her as he finally really sensed what kind of predicament and danger she must be in and all he wanted to do was make her feel safe again, he didnât care if he had to set the world on fire to do it either. He knew Hazel was smart, brilliant even and as badass as the day was long but if his Hazel was this scared, she would only have every justification to be so.
âOk.â Titus answered softly as finally nodded as he brought her in and hugged her tight and kissed the crown of her head.
âObviously you donât have a choice in this. If this is the way it has to be then itâs the way it has to be.â Titus offered as Hazel just broke down crying and bawled into his chest and when she was done, she pulled herself back together and kissed him so deeply it started their own familiar chain of events and once satisfied, they left and went about their day, Titus doing his best to act like nothing was wrong and that nothing had happened out of the usual.
âHey you wanna meet up with Cor and Ada for dinner?â Hazel asked innocently as they were putting their groceries away.
âYeah sure.â Titus nodded and texted Cor.
âWhere to?â Titus asked Hazel.
âI donât care, whatever they want is fine.â Hazel waived off. âActually I could go for some rice noodles though, maybe Chinese? Japanese? Vietnamese? Thai? Something like that.â Hazel waived off. Â
âThe Mandarin?â Titus suggested, knowing that was her favorite Chinese restaurant, it was a bit upscale but very authentic and the whole menu was in Mandarin and English and he loved the way Hazel could order for them in nothing but Mandarin and get things that werenât even on the menu.
âPerfect.â Hazel beamed and once at the restaurant, Cor was exceptionally happy and even giddy because he had gotten a break in the Gilgamesh case that day and Hazel was grateful that she wasnât sitting right next to him but feared for Ada, knowing that Ada was in grave danger but was powerless to say anything to her directly. Hazel excused herself from the table and took her server aside as she went to the bathroom and gave her a hundred dollar bill if she put the envelope into Corâs bill. Hazel having taken the envelope out with a tissue and put it into a folded napkin to hand to the server who thought it was some kind of practical joke before the owner, who had been watching over them, took the envelope and looked inside before their eyes went wide for a moment and made a quick phone call before they nodded and got a red envelope and wrote something out with a calligraphy pen and comped not just Cor and Adaâs meal but Titus and Hazelâs too.
âMr. Leonis, could you please come with me?â The owner asked Cor as he came and pointed to the bill as if the card had gotten declined.
âOh, that shouldnât of...â Cor said as he got up and got his wallet out as he followed the owner to the cash register.
âOh no, your card wasnât declined, no your meal was taken care of already but I didnât want to disturb your party by handing you this.â The owner said as he handed Leonis a red cash envelope typically given to newly weds at their wedding.
âWhat does this say?â Cor asked as he pointed to the writing on the envelope.
âIt says âcompliments of Emperor Gilgameshâ.â The owner answered.
âFuck.â Cor breathed. âIs he here? Like right now?â Cor asked the owner.
âOf course not. Even if he was, you could not do anything Marshal.â The owner pointed out with a smug grin.
âI could have you arrested for aiding and abetting.â Cor threatened.
âPerhaps you should look at the flash drive first before you make any foolish threats.â The owner suggested sagely as Cor narrowed his eyes and got the flash drive and put it into his phone before picture after picture of Ada and Ada and himself came up on the screen before a new message came into his phone with a picture of himself, Ada and Titus in the cross-hairs from a scope while they were still there at the restaurant and Cor looked up and searched the room, trying to find the threats and the vantage points these pictures were taken from.
âIt really would be quite rude to answer generosity with disrespect. Perhaps you should go home now.â The owner suggested. âAnd please do not think that my restaurant is unique in that his Majesty has reign here. There is no where any of you could ever go that he would not come for you.â The owner warned. âAnd if I may let you in on a secret. His Majesty is being lenient with you and has written your name in black. This is your warning that you have come too close. If you come any closer, he will write your name in white. White is the color of death in our culture. And it will be as if he would have written your death warrant.â The owner added and Cor gulped.
âUnderstood.â Cor nodded before he went back to the table and tried to casually get them all out of there as the owner came and thanked them for coming and invited them back as he handed Hazel a to go container of her favorite dumplings- raw so she could steam them herself when she got home and once back in Titusâ truck Hazel found a thick black card with what Gilgamesh liked to referred to her as written in gold ink along with a quick message of thanks.
âWhat does that say?â Titus asked as he noticed it.
âIt says âthank youâ and my name.â Hazel answered honestly.
âIâve never gotten a thank you for getting takeout from here.â Titus frowned.
âWell youâre not on first name basis and friends with the family.â Hazel tried to reason with a lop sided grin as Titus nodded in understanding.
âSo thatâs why our meal was free?â Titus asked.
âYup.â Hazel nodded.
âSo...Iâm thinking we should take up a new hobby together.â Titus began.
âWhich is?â Hazel asked curiously.
âShooting. Iâm already into hunting, I need to be a better shooter though.â Titus realized as he squeezed her hand a little tighter and gave her a gentle yet reassuring look and watched as Hazelâs grin grew into a full blown smile.
âThat would be...amazing.â Hazel praised as she squeezed his hand back tightly and just fell in love with him a little more. Because usually right about now any guy would be running for the hills but instead, Titus was making plans to stay and try to help her.
âWanna stay at my house tonight?â Titus asked.
âHell yeah.â Hazel nodded as Titus then turned to head to his house since Hazel already had enough of her things to stay there for a few months straight already.
Once back at his house, Titus put her dumplings in the fridge before he turned to face her, wanting to tell her a thousand different things all at once as he had thought about her predicament all day.
âSo, if I wanted my house as secure and defend-able as possible, how would I go about that?â Titus asked her before she grabbed the shopping list pad off of his fridge and a pen and handed them to him.
âTake notes.â Hazel grinned as Titus returned her grin and took them before Hazel began to go through the whole house and tell him exactly how to accomplish that and insisted that she pay for it all because it would be getting quite costly but it was investment in Titusâ well being and would help her sleep easier at night.

Maple Leaves and Flannel
Characters: Sam Winchester x Reader, Dean Winchester (mentioned) Word Count: 2,608 Warnings: Cutesy fluff and extreme descriptions of fall. (I donât think thatâs really a warning, but Iâm a wordy girl so...maybe?) A/N: I wrote this for @impalaimaginingâs Favorite Seasons Gif Challenge! Fall is my favorite time of year, so I was excited to get to write a fic that primarily focused on that.
Betaâd by my wonderful @trexrambling, because without her, a lot of my thoughts would be jumbled: âTHIS. HANNAH, THIS!!!!!! YESSSSSSS I LOVE THIS LINE IT IS MY NEW FAVORITE LINE. Gaaaaaaaaaah this is wonderful.â
And my sweet @pinknerdpanda, who encourages me even when I hate nearly everything I wrote and feel like starting over: â I love this whole sentence sooooo much!â
As usual, tags are at the bottom. Please let me know if youâd like to be added!!
Fall has always been my favorite time of year. Summer had its moments, but when the stifling heat finally started melting into cool breezes, when I could enjoy the sunâs warmth on my face without immediate fear of being burnt to a crisp, I was in my happy place. If anyone were to ask me why fall was my favorite, besides the cooler temperatures and the lack of sun poisoning, it would be hard to pinpoint an exact thing.
It could be the brilliant colors the leaves inevitably changed to, a magnificent splash of reds and oranges and yellows all mixing together to make it look like the landscape was on fire. The slow appearance of Halloween decorations that would go up bit by bit; a zombie here, purple and green lights there, fake spiderweb stretching across every available surface. The extraordinary amount of pumpkins that would just appear with no warning on porch steps, balanced precariously on hay bales that also would magically appear, a majority of which had simple faces that had been painstakingly carved into them by excited children who cared less about the carving and more about cleaning out the slimy guts inside.
So, had you asked me what my favorite thing about fall was, I would have told you it was too hard to choose and wandered off with my pumpkin spice latte to find some crunchy leaves to jump in.
Well, thatâs what I would have said. But then I saw him.
Right in the middle of town is a large maple tree. Large is really an understatement. This maple tree is one of the oldest Iâve ever seen, and itâs huge. Itâs right on the edge of the sidewalk, and the roots have pushed up the concrete slabs like theyâre made out of foam. Every year, I expect one of the massive branches to break off and land on top of the old, Victorian-style house that sits empty next to it, but every year it proves me wrong. It also sits directly on the path I take from my apartment to the library, and every time I walk past, regardless of what I might be doing at the time, I glance up at the huge spanning limbs and falling leaves. Most days, thereâs nothing remarkable about it. Itâs beautiful, yes, and itâs one of my favorite things about my town...but generally speaking, itâs the same scene every single day.
Except one day when there was an addition to the normal scenery.
I had just crossed the street and was making my way down the sidewalk when I glanced up out of habit and stopped dead in my tracks. Standing just under the maple was a tall man, his head bent as he looked down at his phone. His shaggy, chestnut hair hung down and obscured most of his face, and I held my breath as I waited for him to look up. He was wearing a burnt orange coat and a lighter orange flannel; he was like the perfect autumn day in a ruggedly handsome, broad shouldered package. He must have realized someone was staring at him because he looked up and locked eyes with me, a small smile playing on his lips.
âHi,â he said softly, his voice deep and smooth.
I finally released the breath Iâd been holding, my eyes wide. âH-hello.â
He took a couple of steps towards me and pocketed his phone as he did, âSorry to bother you, but do you live around here?â I nodded but remained quiet. âDo you know much about this house?â
âOh, yea, itâs one of my favorite places in town. Are you...are you interested in buying it?â
He shoved his hands in his pockets and nodded, âYea, actually. Me and my brother grew up in a house like this, and I just happened to be driving through when I saw it.â
âSo do you live close by?â Surely I would have remembered seeing him around.
He shook his head, âNo, I'm here on business. I've been kind of looking for a place to start over, and since I was already here, I thought I'd look around.â He held his hand out, âMy name is Sam, by the way. Sam Winchester.â I took his hand, and I was unsurprised when his totally engulfed mine.
âY/F/N Y/L/N. Itâs nice to meet you.â
âSame.â He smiled again, and just as he opened his mouth to say something else, a muffled ring interrupted him. He quickly reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone. After a quick glance, he looked at me apologetically, âI'm sorry, that's my brother. I gotta go meet him...family business stuff to work on. Maybe I'll see you around?â
I smiled at him, âYea, that would be nice. See you later.â
He gave a small wave and started walking down the sidewalk in the opposite direction that I was going. Luckily, that wasn't the last time I saw Sam Winchester.
The second time I saw Sam Winchester I was at the library, coffee in hand as I flipped through pages upon pages of town history. I had just started at the local newspaper, and my first assignment was to put together a large series leading up to the townâs centennial celebration. Most people would have wondered what they had done to deserve such a fate, but I loved stuff like that. There was something about getting lost in old newspapers and books, scattered photographs that lay forgotten in people's attics, only remembered when you ask them if they have anything that would help you. I could sit all day at the library, curled up in one of the overstuffed chairs with a giant book. Most of my days consisted of that, actually.
I had been reading about The Great Flood of 1928 when I heard someone clear their throat. I looked up to see Sam looking at me, one corner of his mouth turned up in a smile. âHey, Y/N.â
âHi, Sam,â I said as I shifted into a more upright position. âHow are you?â
He shrugged, âPretty good. I think weâll be here for a few more days.â He nodded towards my stack of books, âWhat are you researching?â
I glanced down at the book in my hand, âCurrently, a catastrophic flood that destroyed most of the town in 1928. In general, just getting some information for a series I'm writing for the paper. The centennial is coming up. Although I have to say, there's less interesting and happy things than there are devastating natural disasters, murder, and general bad luck.â I closed my book and sat it on the table. âWhy are you here?â
âWell, I needed to do some research of my own. The librarian told me you might have a book I need. It's actually a collection of property deeds and stuff.â
I raised an eyebrow, âThat soundsâŚâ
âBoring,â Sam laughed. âIt is. Which is why I'm here and not my brother.â He sat the books he'd already claimed down, âMind if I join you?â
I shook my head as I handed him the book he was looking for, âNot at all. I can't promise that I'll be exciting company, though,â
He laughed, âAt least we can be boring together.â
And so we sat, the next three hours consumed with what was supposed to be serious research but had quickly turned into us laughing about some of the more ridiculous things that had happened in town.
Sam sat back with a laugh, and I couldn't help but stare at the deep dimples that formed when he allowed himself to truly smile. âWow, it's been awhile since I laughed that much. That was nice.â He pulled his phone from his pocket and his smile quickly disappeared, âBut it looks like it's time for me to head out.â He stood and shouldered his coat on, âHopefully I'll get to see you before we leave.â
I smiled, âI would enjoy that. See you around.â Sam smiled and strode quickly out of the library. I looked down to find that he'd left the book he'd asked for open, and I pulled it around to look at the page he'd marked.
The deed was for the old abandoned house with the giant maple in the yard.
The last time I saw Sam Winchester is a little blurry. It's kind of a long story, and honestly I'm not even sure that I have all the details. I remember seeing the deed for the old house. Curiosity got the better of me and I did the one thing that I'm surprised I hadn't done before but realize now should never have; I googled the address of the Victorian house with the townâs oldest maple tree.
I vaguely recall reading what had to have been one of the more disturbing stories of our town that I had soundly decided not to include in our centennial write up. But even after I sat down to read something else, determined to not focus on the vicious quadruple murder/suicide that had occurred in the house, my mind kept returning to it.
Which had led me to my next question; why was Sam so interested in that house? And what family business was he doing that he needed the deed information? Nothing was adding up, and I was beginning to wonder what that handsome stranger was up to.
I remember leaving the library, bag in tow and determined to figure out what was going on. I had stopped at the end of the sidewalk before taking a big breath and striding up the cracked concrete like I owned the place.
And that's when things get a little fuzzy. All I can really remember is that I saw something that shouldn't have been real. That moment of pause, the shock of seeing a man that was long dead standing directly in front of me, nearly cost me my life. What I do remember is Sam appearing out of nowhere, quickly followed by a shorter man with bright eyes that I guessed was his brother, and a loud shotgun blast.
Then I was outside, my back against the maple tree and a large, rough hand cradled against my face.
âY/N...hey, are you alright?â Any other time, opening my eyes to that handsome face would have been welcome. As it was, I could barely remember where I was, much less who was in front of me.
âI...yea...I think so...what happened?â
Sam breathed a sigh of relief, âItâs a long story.â
I shifted my weight and groaned as my bruised ribs protested at the movement, âWhat exactly do you and your brother do, anyway?â
He chuckled, âThat's also a long story.â He helped me stand up, and I grimaced again. âAre you sure you're okay?â
I nodded, âAside from the fact that I just saw something impossible, and said impossible thing tried to kill me...I'm pretty sure I'm good. Ask me tomorrow.â He smiled sadly and my chest ached, âYou won't be here, will you?â
He shook his head, âNo, we uh...we have some other things to take care of.â I stared at him for a moment and tried to memorize the way his hair fell in his face, the little mole on his chin, how his eyes seemed to change color. There were too many details, and I knew it would be impossible to do him justice in my spotty memory. So instead, I put my arms around his waist and pressed my ear to his chest and listened to the strong, steady beat of his heart.
âIt was nice to meet you, Sam Winchester.â
Sam didn't say anything, but he wrapped his arms around me and held me a little tighter.
It's been a year since I last saw Sam Winchester. A year since I saw him standing under that maple tree, its bright red and orange leaves falling around him as he looked at his phone, unaware of the dumbstruck girl staring at him.
It's been a year since I let curiosity win out over common sense and I discovered that there was far more to this world than I could have ever imagined, and that the gentle giant that I had laughed with over coffee was responsible for keeping it all in check.
Sam and Dean had driven me home and the ride there was mostly silent. Sam sat in the back with me, his long legs tucked in as well as he could, and I had curled tightly into his side. My ribs complained the entire ride, but I ignored them; I wasn't passing up what could be my last chance to be this close to Sam.
Sam walked me to my door and pulled me into one last hug, and it took everything I had not to beg him to at least stay the night. He'd started to walk away, but at the last minute, turned back and pulled me into him, his soft lips working against mine almost desperately before he pulled back, gave me a tight lipped smile, and walked to the car. The next morning I went to stick my hand in my jacket pocket and found a piece of a napkin containing small, cramped handwriting. There was a number, and under that a single word - 'Sam'.
We had texted quite a bit for awhile; what he and Dean were up to, plans to get coffee when they finally made it back into town to visit, the most recent book we'd read. I knew that with their lifestyle, it would probably be awhile before I got to see Sam again, but I held on to hope. Then, finally, the messages stopped.
I'd like to think that he's okay, that he's saving people from the monsters that linger in the shadows, but I often worry that something happened. I think I'd feel it, though. For that much good to leave the world, I'm sure my heart would know.
I've kept the same routine this whole year. I walk the same path, go to the same job, live in the same apartment. And every day, I walk past the old Victorian, the maple looming over it with its canopy of fiery leaves. Iâd always looked towards the house, only now I do so in hopes that I'll see a man, dressed like fall, and smiling. When I don't see him there, I like to imagine that he's off saving the world with his brother, one monster at a time.
That is, until today.
Because today, I walked the same path down the same road, crossed at the same corner, and just like I did exactly one year ago, I looked up at the house and the maple. Under its falling leaves, standing just where he was the first time I saw him, was Sam. Only this time, he wasn't looking down at his phone; this time he was looking straight at me. He was a bit thinner than he was back then, and he'd cut his hair a little different, but the smile was the same. I stopped a few feet away, afraid that if I blinked he'd disappear.
âSorry I'm late,â he said softly, âthings got a little...crazy.â
I nodded, âLong story?â
Sam chuckled, âYea, you could say that.â
I walked over and wrapped my arms around his waist, my ear to his chest, and sighed happily. I never realized how relieved I would feel to hear someoneâs heartbeat. âYou know what, I have all day.â

Todd Henry, founding father of the Unintentional Artistic, makes use of this technique with superb outcomes. Right hereâs the way it works:
Earlier than you end work for the day, seize any open questions that you simplyâre presently engaged on. Ask your self: when you had been to proceed working, what can be the very subsequent factor youâd do?
Write these questions and the subsequent factor youâd do on a chunk of paper.
Decide what youâll do first once you sit all the way down to work once more. This provides you a right away start line for the subsequent day.
âEach time Iâm engaged on a long-arc challenge, I at all times finish each work session realizing the place Iâll decide up the subsequent day,â Henry says. âI donât procrastinate as a result of I need to keep away from the work, I usually do it as a result of Iâm unsure of the proper subsequent step. This tactic retains me from getting caught.â

And lest you concern you might be arriving late to the procrastination bandwagon, calm down. Thatâs the beauty of procrastination, no matter time you have got remaining is the precise period of time you want.â
One good thing about embracing procrastination is that it creates synthetic stress that trains you to cope with actual stress throughout your profession. Procrastinators need to study to prioritize. Most marijuana medicinal benefits are inconclusive, wide-ranging study finds
Study of 10,000 reports into cannabis finds only enough evidence to support therapeutic use for chemotherapy patients, chronic pain and multiple sclerosis
There is not enough research to reach conclusive judgments on whether marijuana can effectively treat most of the symptoms and diseases it is advertised as helping, according to a wide-ranging US government study.
The same is also true of many of the risks said to be associated with using cannabis, the study finds.
More than 100 conclusions about the health effects of marijuana, including claims of both helpful and harmful effects, were evaluated by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine in a study released on Thursday.
There was only enough evidence to support treatment for three therapeutic uses, the study found: to reduce nausea and vomiting from chemotherapy, to treat chronic pain and to reduce spasms from multiple sclerosis.
Really, most of the therapeutic reasons people use medical marijuana arent substantiated beneficial effects of the plant, said Sean Hennessy, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Pennsylvania, and a member of the 16-scientist committee that carried out the review.
Uses for which there was either limited evidence or insufficient evidence, according to Hennessy, included increasing appetite and weight gain for patients with HIV/Aids, calming attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children, and treating epilepsy.
Theres been an explosion of literature since 1999 We reviewed thousands of abstracts, said Robert Wallace, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Iowa College of Public Health, and another member of the committee tasked with reviewing more than 10,000 studies to reach conclusions about the current state of research on marijuana. A lot of the report is really where the state of the evidence is.
For example, the report found conclusive evidence that cannabis can alleviate some nausea and vomiting associated with cancer treatment, but that case was long ago considered settled. For many indications in the report, science has not reached a definitive answer.
The reports key findings fell into a few broad categories:
Injury and death: evidence suggests that driving while high increases the risk of a car accident. In states where marijuana has been legalized, evidence suggests that children are at more risk of ingesting marijuana. Cannabis use could also harm adolescents educational and social development.
Mental health: cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia, social anxiety disorders and, to a lesser extent, depression. Heavy marijuana users are more likely to report suicidal thoughts that non-users, and people with bipolar disorder who use marijuana almost daily show more symptoms than non-users.
Cancer: evidence does not support a link between smoking marijuana and cancers typically associated with tobacco, such as head, neck and lung cancer. Evidence suggests that smoking marijuana on a regular basis is associated with chronic bronchitis and phlegm production.
Addiction: evidence suggests that people who use more cannabis are more likely to be addicted, and that the younger people start, the more likely they are to develop problematic use.
Nausea: there is conclusive evidence that cannabinoids, compounds derived from marijuana, are useful to treat nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy.
Chronic pain: there is evidence to support use of cannabis in treatment of chronic pain, in particular in spasms associated with multiple sclerosis, the disabling central nervous system disease.
The report comes as the pace of marijuana reforms has quickened across the US. Medicinal marijuana is now legal in 29 states, and recreational marijuana is legal in eight states and in Washington DC. Marijuana is the most widely used illicit drug in the US, with an estimated 22.2 million people using the drug in the past month, according to a 2014 government survey.
Drug policy reform has also became a topic of international debate, as high-profile medical organizations and some countries call for decriminalization of illicit drugs. The academies report is the first in 18 years to address such a breadth of physical effects from marijuana, and is likely to fuel arguments on both sides of the marijuana debate.
While the paper is broad and wide-ranging, it is unlikely to end debate on any number of treatments. One researcher studying the therapeutic impacts of the cannabis compound cannabidiol on children with epilepsy said researchers conclusions were broadly conservative, and on epilepsy wrong.
For science to do what it does, I think when they do a scientific review they should incorporate all the evidence that is out there for that disorder, and I dont think they did that for epilepsy, said Orrin Devinsky, director of New York University Langone Medical Centers comprehensive epilepsy center. Still, he called the report very valuable.
The report comes at a significant time for marijuana policy worldwide, as drug policy reform has picked up both in the US and internationally. Less than one year ago, an international commission published a report in The Lancet calling for decriminalization of all drugs, finding that prohibition did not effectively combat drug use, addiction or organized crime. At the same time, the United Nations held a special session to discuss global drug policy, the first in almost 20 years. Additionally, mental health concerns about skunk marijuana have also increased.
The study represents the broadest review by the National Academies of Sciences since 1999, after California and Arizona passed the first medical marijuana laws, and the public debated whether physicians should prescribe marijuana.
Controversially, the 1999 report found that marijuana could indeed reduce nausea, but that it could also help treat pain. While the report found some negative effects from smoking marijuana, it also contradicted the then US drug czar Barry R McCaffreys position that not a shred of scientific evidence existed for the medicinal use of marijuana.
Almost two decades later, legal marijuana has spawned an untold number of shops hawking marijuana for people to enjoy like beer or wine, but also products that more closely resemble cure-alls on the untested supplement market.
There is a great fear that I continue to have, that the cannabis industry medically will be like the vitamin and nutritional supplement market, Devinsky said. People advertise on TV that we isolated a compound from jellyfish and it improves memory.
He added: Its become a religion for people, and my personal view is if you want to pray to whatever gods you pray to, and you want to advocate for whatever political candidate, its a free country. But when it comes to medical therapy, we have a higher standard.
In the US, the push for marijuana legalization comes at a time of increasing dismay over the state of the criminal justice system, as sentencing laws passed during the war on drugs are being reexamined in light of their disproportionate impact on people of color.
This growing acceptance, accessibility and use of cannabis and its derivatives has raised important public health concerns, said Marie McCormick, a pediatrician at Harvard Universitys TH Chan School of Public Health, who chaired the committee. Moreover, the lack of any aggregated knowledge of cannabis-related health effects has led to uncertainty about what, if any, are the harms or benefits from its use.
We conducted an in-depth and broad review of the most recent research to establish firmly what the science says, and to highlight areas that still need further examination. As laws and policies continue to change, research must also.
The report also took the unusual step of calling for private funding sources to advance marijuana research. Researchers found it difficult to gain access to the quantity, quality, and type of cannabis product necessary, the report said. A diverse network of funders is needed to support cannabis and cannabinoid research.
One of those hurdles is the limited supply of research-grade marijuana, which is grown only at the University of Mississippi.
Any federal study has challenges, said Nolan Kane, a geneticist at the University of Colorado at Boulder studying the evolution of plants such as sunflowers and hemp. He described government-approved marijuana as having a fraction of the psychoactive ingredients of privately grown marijuana, and said research subjects described the marijuana as old and low quality.
Getting people to even accept money to smoke their marijuana youd think college campuses, it would be easy to get people to smoke marijuana, Kane said. It doesnt at all reflect the marketplace ⌠Its always going to be comparing apples and oranges until theyre able to make the products more similar.
The report is the product of 16 experts in their fields, including neurologists, oncologists, epidemiologists and child psychiatrists. Among the reviews most fervent calls were for more investigation.
The study was sponsored by a group of state health departments, federal agencies and nonprofits, such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the Robert W Woodruff Foundation and the Arizona department of health services.

Haruki Murakami and Seiji Ozawa talk music, art and creativity
One writes fiction, the other conducts an orchestra, but Murakami and Ozawa share a drive, determination and a passion for music. They discuss the creative process, inspiration and the eclecticism of Mahler
Until we started these interviews, I had never had a serious conversation with Seiji Ozawa about music. True, I lived in Boston from 1993 to 1995, while he was still music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and I would often go to concerts he conducted, but I was just another anonymous fan in the audience. Not long after that, my wife and I happened to become friends with his daughter, Seira, and we would see and talk to her father now and then. But our acquaintance was casual and had nothing to do with either his work or mine.
Perhaps one reason we never talked seriously about music until recently is that the maestros work kept him so fully immersed. As a result, whenever we got together to have a drink, wed talk about anything other than music. At most, we might have shared a few fragmentary remarks on some musical topics that never led anywhere. Ozawa is the type of person who focuses all his energy on his work, so that when he steps away from it, he needs to take a breather. Knowing this, I avoided bringing up musical topics when I was in his company.
In December of 2009, however, Ozawa was found to have oesophageal cancer, and after major surgery the following month, he had to restrict his musical activities, largely replacing them with a challenging programme of recuperation and rehabilitation. Perhaps because of this regime, we gradually began to talk more about music whenever we met. As weakened as he was, he took on a new vitality whenever the topic turned to music. Even when talking with a musical layman such as myself, any sort of conversation about music seemed to provide the refreshment he needed. And the very fact that I was not in his field probably set him at ease.
I have been a fervent jazz fan for close to half a century, but I have also been listening to classical music with no less enjoyment, collecting classical records since I was in high school, and going to concerts as often as time would permit. Especially when I was living in Europe from 1986 to 1990 I was immersed in classical music. Listening to jazz and the classics has always been both an effective stimulus and a source of peace to my heart and mind. If someone told me that I could listen to only one or the other but not to both, my life would be immeasurably diminished. As Duke Ellington once said: There are simply two kinds of music, good music and the other kind. In that sense, jazz and classical music are fundamentally the same. The pure joy one experiences listening to good music transcends questions of genre.
During one of Ozawas visits to my home, we were listening to music and talking about one thing or another when he told me a tremendously interesting story about Glenn Gould and Leonard Bernsteins 1962 performance in New York of Brahmss First Piano Concerto. What a shame it would be to let such a fascinating story just evaporate, I thought. Somebody ought to record it and put it on paper. And, brazen as it may seem, the only somebody that happened to cross my mind at that moment was me.
When I suggested this to Ozawa, he liked the idea immediately. Why not? he said. Ive got plenty of time to spare these days. Lets do it.
To have Ozawa ill with cancer was a heart-wrenching development for the music world, for me personally, and of course for him; but that it gave rise to this time for the two of us to sit and have good, long talks about music may be one of those rare silver linings that are not in fact to be found in every cloud.
At the risk of sounding somewhat presumptuous, I confess that in the course of our many conversations, I began to suspect that Ozawa and I might have several things in common. Questions of talent or productivity or fame aside, what I mean here is that I can feel a sense of identity in the way we live our lives.
First of all, both of us seem to take the same simple joy in our work. Whatever differences there might be between making music and writing fiction, both of us are happiest when immersed in our work. And the very fact that we are able to become so totally engrossed in it gives us the deepest satisfaction. What we end up producing as a result of that work may well be important, but aside from that, our ability to work with utter concentration and to devote ourselves to it so completely that we forget the passage of time is its own irreplaceable reward.

Secondly, we both maintain the same hungry heart we possessed in our youth, that persistent feeling that this is not good enough, that we must dig deeper, forge farther ahead. This is the major motif of our work and our lives. Observing Ozawa in action, I could feel the depth and intensity of the desire he brought to his work. He was convinced of his own rightness and proud of what he was doing, but not in the least satisfied with it. I could see he knew he should be able to make the music even better, even deeper, and he was determined to make it happen even as he struggled with the constraints of time and his own physical strength.
The third of our shared traits is stubbornness. Were patient, tough, and, finally, just plain stubborn. Once weve decided to do something in a certain way, it doesnt matter what anybody else says, thats how were going to do it. And even if, as a result, we find ourselves in dire straits, possibly even hated, we will take responsibility for our actions without making excuses. Ozawa is an utterly unpretentious person who is constantly cracking jokes, but he is also extremely sensitive to his surroundings, and his priorities are clear. Once he has made his mind up, he doesnt waver. Or at least that is how he appears to me.
Creative people have to be fundamentally egoistic. This may sound pompous, but it happens to be the truth. People who live their lives watching what goes on around them, trying not to make waves, and looking for the easy compromise, are not going to be able to do creative work, whatever their field. To build something where there was nothing requires deep individual concentration, and in most cases that kind of concentration occurs in a place unrelated to cooperation with others, a place we might even call dmonisch.
Still, letting ones ego run wild on the assumption that one is an artist will disrupt any kind of social life, which in turn interrupts the individual concentration so indispensable for creativity. Baring the ego in the late 19th century was one thing, but now, in the 21st century, it is a far more difficult matter. Creative professionals constantly have to find those realistic points of compromise between themselves and their environment.
What I am trying to say here is that while Ozawa and I of course have found very different ways to establish those points of compromise, we are likely headed in pretty much the same direction. And while we may set very different priorities, the way we set them may be quite similar. Which is why I was able to listen to his stories with something more than mere sympathy.
This conversation took place on 22 February 2011, in my Tokyo office. We talked a great deal about Mahler. As we spoke, I realised what an important part of Ozawas repertory the music of Mahler has been. I myself had a problem getting into Mahler for a very long time, but at a certain stage in my life the music began to move me.
Haruki Murakami: Among musicians who perform Mahler and maybe among his listeners, too there are many who think a lot about the composers life or his worldview or his times or fin-de-sicle introspection. Where do you stand with regard to such things?
Seiji Ozawa: I dont think about them all that much. I do read the scores closely, though. On the other hand, when I started working in Vienna more than 30 years ago, I made friends and started going to the art museums there. And when I first saw the work of Klimt and Egon Schiele, they came as a real shock to me. Since then, Ive made it a point to go to art museums. When you look at the art of the time, you understand something about the music. Take Mahlers music: it comes from the breakdown of traditional German music. You get a real sense of that breakdown from the art, and you can tell it was not some half-baked thing.
HM: I know what you mean. The last time I went to Vienna, I went to a Klimt exhibition at an art museum. Seeing the art in the city where it was created, you really feel it.
SO: Klimts work is beautiful and painted with minute attention to detail; but looking at it, dont you think theres something kind of crazy about it, too?
HM: Yes, its certainly not what youd call normal.
SO: Theres something about it, I dont know, that tells you about the importance of madness, or that transcends things like morality. And in fact, at the time, morality really was breaking down, and there was a lot of sickness going around.
HM: A lot of syphilis and stuff. Vienna was more or less pervaded with this kind of mental and physical breakdown: it was the atmosphere of the age. The last time I went to Vienna, I had some time to kill, so I rented a car and spent four or five days driving around the southern part of the Czech Republic the old Bohemian region where Mahlers birthplace was located, the little village of Kalischt, or Kalit as they call it now. I didnt go there on purpose, I just happened to pass through. Its still tremendously rural out there, nothing but fields as far as the eye can see. Its not that far from Vienna, but I was surprised at how different the two areas were. So Mahler came from a place like this! I thought. What a huge turnabout in values he must have experienced! Back then, Vienna was not only the capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, it was a colourful centre of European culture and probably ripe to the point of being overripe. The Viennese must have looked upon Mahler as a real country bumpkin.
SO: I see what you mean.
Seiji Ozawa conducts Mahler Symphony No 9.
HM: And on top of that, he was a Jew. But come to think of it, the city of Vienna gained a lot of its vitality by taking in culture from its surroundings. You can see this in the biographies of Anton Rubinstein and Rudolf Serkin. Viewing it this way, its easy to see why popular songs and Jewish klezmer melodies pop up in Mahlers music all of a sudden, mixing into his serious musicality and aesthetic melodies like intruders. This diverse quality is one of the real attractions of Mahlers music. If he had been born and raised in Vienna, I doubt that his music would have turned out that way.
SO: True.
HM: All the great creators of that period Kafka, Mahler, Proust were Jews. They were shaking up the established cultural structure from the periphery. In that sense, it was important that Mahler was a Jew from the countryside. I felt that strongly when I was travelling around Bohemia.

HM: Just listening to this third movement of the First Symphony, it seems pretty clear to me that Mahlers music is filled with many different elements, all given more or less equal value, used without any logical connection, and sometimes even in conflict with one another: traditional German music, Jewish music, fin-de-sicle overripeness, Bohemian folksongs, musical caricatures, comic subcultural elements, serious philosophical propositions, Christian dogma, Asian worldviews no single one of which you can place at the centre of things. With so many elements thrown together indiscriminately (which sounds bad, I know), arent there plenty of openings where a non-western conductor such as yourself can make his own special inroads? In other words, isnt there something particularly universal or cosmopolitan about Mahlers music?
SO: Well, this is all very complicated, but I do think there are such openings.
HM: I remember when we talked about Berlioz and you said that his music had openings that a Japanese conductor could exploit, because it was crazy. Cant you say pretty much the same thing about Mahler?
SO: The big difference between Berlioz and Mahler is that Berlioz doesnt put in all these detailed instructions.
HM: Ah, I see.
SO: So we performers are a lot freer when it comes to Berlioz. We have less freedom with Mahler, but when you get to those final, subtle details, I think there exists a sort of universal opening. We Japanese and other Asian people have our own special kind of sorrow. I think it comes from a slightly different place than Jewish sorrow or European sorrow. If you are willing to attempt to understand all of these mentalities, and make informed decisions after you do so, then the music will naturally open up for you. Which is to say that when an easterner performs music written by a westerner, it can have its own special meaning. I think its well worth the effort.
HM: You mean you have to dig down to something deeper than superficial Japanese emotionalism to understand it and internalise it?
SO: Yes, thats it. I like to think that a performance of western music that also makes full use of Japanese sensibilities assuming the performance itself is excellent has its own raison dtre.
HM: When Im listening to Mahler, I always think that there are deep layers of the psyche that play an important role in his music. Maybe its something Freudian. In Bach or Beethoven or Brahms, youre more in the world of German conceptual philosophy, where the rational, unburied parts of the psyche play the most important role. In Mahlers music, though, it feels as though he is deliberately plunging down into the dark, into the subterranean realm of the mind. As if in a dream, you find many motifs that contradict one another, that are in opposition, that refuse to blend and yet are indistinguishable, all joined together almost indiscriminately. I dont know whether hes doing this consciously or unconsciously, but it is at least very direct and honest.
SO: Mahler and Freud lived at just about the same time, didnt they?
HM: Yes. Both were Jewish, and their birthplaces were not far apart, I think. Freud was a little older, and Mahler came to Freud for a consultation when his wife, Alma, had an affair [with the architect Walter Gropius, whom she married after Mahlers death]. Freud is said to have been deeply respectful of Mahler. That kind of straightforward pursuit of the underground springs of the unconscious may make us cringe but I think it is probably what helps to make Mahlers music so very universal today.
SO: In that sense, Mahler rebelled single-handedly against the sturdy mainstream of German music, from Bach through Haydn to Mozart, and from Beethoven to Brahms at least until the emergence of 12-tone music.
HM: When you stop to think about it, though, 12-tone music is extremely logical, in the same sense that Bachs Well-Tempered Clavier is logical music ⌠Twelve-tone music itself has hardly survived, but different elements of it were absorbed into the music that came afterwards ⌠But this is really quite different from the kind of influence that Mahlers music has had on later generations. I think you can say that, dont you?
SO: I do.
HM: In that sense, Mahler was really one of a kind.
âŚ
HM: What is the biggest difference between reading a score by Richard Strauss, for example, and reading a score by Mahler?
SO: At the risk of oversimplifying it, Id say that if you traced the development of German music from Bach through Beethoven, Wagner, Bruckner, and Brahms, you could read Richard Strauss as part of that trajectory. Of course, hes adding all kinds of new layers, but still you can read his music in that stream. But not Mahler. You need a whole new view. Thats the most important thing that Mahler did. There were also composers like Schoenberg and Alban Berg in his day, but they didnt do what Mahler did.
Portrait of Arnold Schoenberg by Richard Gerstl. Photograph: Archivo Iconografico, S.A./COR
HM: As you said a minute ago, Mahler was opening up very different areas than 12-tone music.
SO: He was using the same materials as, say, Beethoven or Bruckner, but building a whole different kind of music with them.
HM: Fighting his battles while always preserving tonality?
SO: Right. But still, in effect he was headed in the direction of atonality. Clearly.
HM: Would you say that by pursuing the possibilities of tonality as far as he could take them, in effect he confused the whole issue of tonality?
SO: I would. He brought in a kind of multilayering.
HM: Like, lots of different keys in the same movement?
SO: Right. He keeps changing things around. And hell do stuff like using two different keys simultaneously.
HM: He doesnt discard tonality, but he causes confusion from the inside, really shakes things up. Thats how he was, in effect, heading toward atonality. But was he striving for something different from the atonality of 12-tone music?
SO: Yes, it was different, I think. It might be closer to call what he was doing polytonality rather than atonality. Polytonality is one step before you get to atonality it means that you use more than one key at the same time. Or you keep changing keys as the music flows. In any case, the atonality that Mahler was aiming for came out of something quite different from the atonality and 12-tone scale that Schoenberg and Berg were offering. Later, people like Charles Ives pursued polytonality more deeply.
HM: Do you think Mahler thought he was doing something avant garde?
SO: No, I dont think so.
HM: Schoenberg and Berg were certainly very conscious of being avant garde, though.
SO: Oh, very much so. They had their method. Mahler had no such thing.
HM: So he flirted with chaos, not as a methodology, but very naturally and instinctively. Is that what youre saying?
SO: Yes. Isnt that exactly where his genius lies?
John Coltrane By Lee Friedlander.
HM: There was a development like that in jazz, too. In the 1960s, John Coltrane kept edging closer and closer to free jazz, but basically he stayed within the bounds of a loose tonality called mode. People still listen to his music today but free jazz is little more than a historical footnote. What were talking about may be kind of like that.
SO: Wow, so there was something like that in jazz?
HM: Come to think of it, though, Mahler had no clear successors. The main symphonic composers who came after him were not Germans but Soviet Russians, such as Shostakovich and Prokofiev. Shostakovichs symphonies are vaguely reminiscent of Mahler.
SO: Yes, very much so. I agree. But Shostakovichs music is very coherent. You dont feel the same kind of craziness you do in Mahler.
HM: Maybe for political reasons it wasnt easy for him to let anything like craziness come out. There is also something deeply abnormal about Mahlers music.
SO: Yes, its true. The art of Egon Schiele is like that, too. When I saw his pictures, I could really see how he and Mahler were living in the same place at the same time. Living in Vienna for a while, I got a strong sense of that atmosphere. It was a tremendously interesting experience for me.
HM: Mahler says in his autobiography that being director of the Vienna State Opera was the top position in the musical world. In order to obtain that position, he went so far as to abandon his Jewish faith and convert to Christianity. He felt the position was worth making such a sacrifice. It occurs to me that you were in that very position until quite recently.
SO: He really said that, did he? Do you know how many years he was director of the State Opera?
HM: Ten years, I think.
SO: For somebody who spent such a long time conducting opera, its amazing that he never wrote one of his own. I wonder why not. He wrote all those Lieder, and he was very conscious of the combination of words and music.
HM: Thats true, now that you mention it. Its too bad. But given the kind of person he was, it might have been hard for him to choose a libretto.
