Okay, so, speaking of Jessica Law: you ever think about the fact that she says the word “law” in both Trial by Song and Gunfight at the Dolorous Guard? Like I’m sure it’s nothing but I think about it every time I hear it.

I also think about her accent a lot. I *really* enjoy /g/ on the end of /ŋ/ words.

#that is genuine enjoyment. fyi. i really like accents #its possible that its actually a /k/ rather than a /g/ but i think its /g/#also those are ipa notation. /g/ is the sound g makes in ‘gain’ in english. /ŋ/ (called ‘eng’) is the sound ‘ng’ make in english. like in-#‘thing’ (but also in ‘think’ because /k/ and /g/ are so similar it sneaks in there). /k/ is a typical ‘k’ pronunciation in english #difference between /k/ and /g/ is that /g/ is voiced.#and the slashes (/ /) just denoted that its ipa but just discussing the sounds not showing the pronunciation of a word. basically (i think)#the silly problem that i have is that. when starting listening to the mechs i fell in love with jessicas part first.#and i always imitate the singer… (its fun to me)…#this has resulted in me added those /g/s onto /ŋ/ words no matter whos part im singing #its just part of my attempt at a british accent now (although i think *only* when singing)#(which is funny because i actually noticed those /g/s in her accent when examining some of her lines as *nikola*)#the mechanisms #jessica law #udad #trial by song #hnoc #gunfight at the dolorous guard

My biggest pet peeve in language learning circles is and always has been when people call Mandarin "Chinese" even though there is not one Chinese language but rather many different Chinese languages (plural! china is linguistically quite diverse), and "Mandarin" 官話 is actually considered its own language family with even more dialects under it and not just one language. I think accuracy matters when talking about what languages you're studying

anyways, here's a tweet on this topic that has been stuck in my mind from the moment i first saw it

Do you have any thoughts/opinions about a possible csa against Hunter during his time in the Emperor Coven?

I’ve thought about it a few times actually.

To be honest, he’s actually a perfect candidate for it.

He’s the only minor in a cult filled to the brim with adults, he’s isolated and wouldn’t have anyone to turn to, he seems too be easily trusting, but that’s just my interpretation. He’s often left alone for extended periods of time with said adults, and while this might be just something I’ve seen wrote in a fanfiction and it might not be true I swear he also has to bathe in a communal shower with the other scouts.

As well as that, the Emperors Coven is essentially the Isles police force. It would be easy enough to cover up crime

I know a lot of people headcanon Belos sa’ing Hunter, but I think if he was a victim of sa in the emperors coven it would have probably at the hands of a guard or scout.

Considering he is literally the chief of the police on the isles I think it’s impossible for him to not know what rape is, and why it’s bad so I feel like he might just decide to never think about it again- however in the dead of night and when he goes to sleep it’s all he can think or dream about.

Maybe the whole Belos being evil thing would push it to the back of his mind, but eventually the memories resurface

every time duolingo makes me translate "you" with "usted" I am filled with rage. not for any rational reason it's just incomprehensible to me that "you" would ever be formal. like I know that's just how the english language works but it feels wrong

been going back and forth on edits with an editor and was initially frustrated with the cuts he wanted to make. Eventually I straight up told him "this was my inspiration for the piece. These are the feelings that need to come through" and guess what? He didn't realize that and two more rounds of edits later, we landed on a really awesome piece that made me tear up. Moral of the story: your editor wants to help you make the best story you can . Be open to changes, but also if it seems like your editor doesn't understand the piece, speak up!

#also if your editor doesnt understand chances are readers might miss it to so its important to work with someone to make it clearer #but also as someone who works as an editor there have been times I needed this pointed out to me as well #i was working on a piece with a bilingual author and i couldn't tell if he was misusing words bc english is fucking hard but it was an #intentional choice to show that the story took place in a different universe than ours which was SO FUCKING CLEVER #the whole story was about hopping parallel universes #but thats also why I only use track changes and allow authors to accept or decline every change no matter how small

honestly one of the greatest joys of speaking another language is surprising people who assume you can’t understand them xD

like i was in cadets yeah? and every summer i’d go stay on a military base for training, and ofc there’re people from all over the country there. so at one point a few guys in the flight as well as our officer are talking & they realize they all speak french so they switch languages right?

well i was doing something nearby & lowkey eavesdropping—i would’ve joined in but i can’t hold a conversation at a fluent pace so i didn’t bother, but i was having fun trying to understand what they were saying—when the officer, who was usually very strict and proper, says “tabarnak,” which is basically the strongest curse word that exists in québécois (it literally means tabernacle, which is where the eucharist—the body and blood of christ—are stored in a catholic church, but is used kinda like the word fuck in english. all the strongest curse words in québec french are related to catholicism)

so i look at him with this huge exaggerated gasp & say “sir” in the most scandalized tone i can muster, and this poor man oh my god. he WHIPS AROUND to look at me with the most stricken expression on his face like “YOU SPEAK FRENCH?! WHY DIDN’T YOU SAY SOMETHING” and i just shrug and go “you didn’t ask”

it’s been years and i’m still laughing about it 💀💀💀

it’s important to try very hard to be as patient and understanding and reasonable as possible and i tell myself aw c’mon how hard can it really be to just chill out and be nice? but every now and it hits me again how we’re all being subjected to a mass gaslighting campaign and then i’m like ah that’s why i’m exhausted deep in my soul all the time. i’m being made to think i’m utterly insane for wanting words to have actual meanings so maybe that makes me a bit cranky y’know
