$50 vs $4 Watercolors

This my Sparklers is the product of two of my favorite things; eagle-eyed art shopping and the lust for artistic experimentation. A little while ago I was scavaging the clearance section at my local Michaels, and I stumbled upon some 5 ml. Winsor & Newton Professional watercolor tubes for a little over $1 each. Upon double-checking the stickers and noticing the cheapest one was originally priced at $9.99 (the most expensive was originally priced $14.99!), I knew they were coming home with me! (And for the record I got all four unique colors they had; if there had been more I certainly would've grabbed them too!) Once I had them home and swatched out, I, of course, wanted to put them to the test to see as I'm sure many of my fellow tight-pocketed artists do, are these tiny tubes really any better than the cheaper mid-range stuff? So I color matched as closely as I could with the watercolors I had, and naturally, since it was the biggest set, the Arteza set of 60 watercolors ended up being my best bet. Technically, at least right now, you can't buy the Arteza tubes individually, so I did the math and even leaned on the high end to place them at about $1 per tube. But even if I'd paid the $40 price Amazon puts on the set, that would still have been cheaper than these four tubes, and it certainly would've been cheaper than a larger set (12, 24, etc.) of most any "professional" quality paints. Unfortunately, I could only match by color similarity, as I did check and none of the pigments match between the Arteza paints and the four Winsor & Newton ones I had. The closest "match" was that the pigment for the yellow in the Arteza set that I picked out is often used as a substitute for the pigment in the yellow Winsor & Newton paint. So I acknowledge you can't really judge the comparison based on color alone here, but then again I figured even if I could match pigments the colors may still turn out differently based on formula or manufacturing process. Still, I tried to create both paintings as similarly as possible, but we'll talk more about that in a second. Now, before I go on I want you to really take a look at the two Polaroids and decide for yourself which side you think was made with the more expensive paints. Really consider what it is about each one that makes you think it's one or the other. Got your choice? Good! Moment of truth; the painting on the left was made with the Arteza watercolors; the one on the right with Winsor & Newton! It was odd though; maybe I'm just used to the cheaper stuff, but I felt like I had an easier time painting the Arteza one than the W&N one. To be fair, the yellowish-green color from W&N (Green Gold, if anyone cares) did lean more on the yellow side than the match I picked from Arteza, which didn't help. (I really could have benefitted from some sort of cool color in that palette.) The W&N paints were definitely more transparent, and yet it took more to water down the color when/if I needed to, which I have mixed feelings about. But again, maybe I'm just used to cheaper stuff and so I'm not used to the traditional properties of more expensive paint. Something I noticed about the W&N paints that I found interesting though, was that they did seem to dry more slowly than the Arteza paints. Drying time with watercolors usually depends on the paper; 100% cotton in particular usually dries more slowly and absorbs the paint more evenly. The thing is that I used the same cellulose paper for both of these; Canson XL watercolor paper. And So my conclusion is that, for whatever reason, the W&N formula just dries more slowly. This makes sense if you consider the drying "issues" I mentioned when I did my Review/First Impression piece on the Arteza paints. To summarize: when the Arteza paints dry on a palette, they dry pretty extremely so. This makes me wonder if you were to mix some glycerin and/or honey into them if they would also dry more slowly on the paper. Whatever the case, I did notice the W&N paints also seemed to layer nicely with thicker concentrations of paint, but the layers underneath wanted to reactivate almost too easily with more watery layers on top, and you can probably spot some instances of that. This was, however, very useful when I decided I wanted to add another layer of yellow to the sky to darken it up. No harsh water lines! The sun/glare spot on both I made by placing an old circular sticker where I wanted it, so I can't comment on the lifting abilities of either brand of paints, but because of how the grass/plants lead into the spot, as well as some other areas, I will say that both kinds blend pretty nicely and similarly. The W&N paints just have the added benefit of drying more slowly, which allows for more blending time. Ultimately, I have to say both paints have their pros and cons, at least as far as I can tell. But my question going into this was more so if I felt like the professional quality paints were really worth all the extra money (when you don't find them for very good clearance prices). And I'll be honest, my answer is no. Now, granted, professional-quality paints--not just watercolor--due tend to be more lightfast/long-lasting, and if you're not like me and not used to using the cheaper stuff that end of the day just behaves differently no matter how you slice it, there's nothing wrong with using the more expensive stuff if you can afford to and that's what you like. There are benefits there. It's just for me, at this point in my artist career, I'm just as happy with more amateur level supplies that, in my experience, work just as well for what I like to do with them. Of course, every case is different. Arteza has more or less made a name for themselves at this point for being less expensive but still decent quality. Not all other options will work out as nicely by comparison. And just as well, even among different professional quality brands, you may have a preference based on your own personal taste. That's just the way things are. So in conclusion: The Winsor and Newton watercolors are definitely nice, but I'm not convinced these four tiny tubes would've been worth $50+ if I'd had to pay full retail price for them. For that kind of money, I'm just as happy with 60 colors from Arteza and a little leftover for something else. What about you, dear reader? What Marketing Strategy Is the Best for You?

If you pick the right marketing strategy, you’ll be like that little guy in the middle of my diagram above. Yes! Winning! Fist pumps!

The problem with marketing today is that there are way too many options and it’s much too confusing. It makes me dizzy just thinking about this stuff and I’ve been immersed in it for 35 years.

Well, I lay down on my bed last week with a notepad and started to map out my “Unified Theory of Marketing Strategies” with an emphasis on online marketing.

And I actually came up with something that’s not totally confusing, and might even be helpful to a few people.

Here goes…

It’s yet another four-quadrant grid where the vertical axis is a scale from easy to hard and the horizontal axis is a scale from passive to proactive.

I emerged with these four snappy quadrants:

Hard and Passive = Multimedia

Easy and Passive = Publishing

Hard and Proactive = Presentations

Easy and Proactive = Email

Now, all of these strategies can be effective. But, yes some are easier than others. And the passive ones tend to take a lot longer than the proactive ones.

Hard and Passive = Multimedia (Videos)

Everyone is crazy about video these days. It’s a challenging, yet passive strategy. You put a lot work into creating a video and then post it on YouTube hoping people see it.

It’s difficult to do well. It’s time-consuming and it can be expensive. And most videos are pure crap. If you want to do it well, it takes a chunk of change and a lot of time.

Throwing up a lot of little videos on your website can be a nice touch, but they usually don’t get people to call you in droves.

So, as you can see, I’m not crazy about a video strategy for self-employed professionals. I’m not saying they can’t work, but it’s a whole lot of work to do right.

Best example: A non-duality teacher named Rupert Spira. He does live workshops and films everything. Then his staff chops them up into questions and answer segments and posts them on YouTube. They’re five to fifteen minutes long. And what you see is what you get. No pitch, no hype. It’s his teaching unadulterated.

He has hundreds of videos on YouTube with hundreds of thousands of views. Does it work? Well, his workshops are always full and all he does is a low-key email announcement to his list every month or two.

I like this approach a lot. Got a lot of good content? Look good on video (unlike yours truly)? Then you may want to emulate Rupert.

Easy and Passive = Publishing

I happen to like this strategy a lot as it, ahem, built my “Empire.” It’s relatively easy: Write a how-to article on your subject matter once a week, send it out to those on your e-list and publish on your blog. Fame ensues.

But online publishing can be a lot more than that. You can take those same articles and publish them on Medium, LinkedIn, and Ezine Articles. And then you can announce them on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. Sometimes you can get big exposure when writing an article for a major online publication. Web traffic multiplies.

The cost is zero; an article takes from two to five hours to write (unless it takes you several days). And your ideas are online for eternity to be discovered by those looking for practical ideas. Some will opt-in to your e-list and perpetuate this virtuous marketing circle.

The downside, of course, is that, according to my extensive research, (a 10 second Google search), there are 2 million articles published online every day. The mind reels. So your stuff will be out there, but somewhat lost in a very big haystack.

I’m still a big advocate of online publishing, but the mountain is getting steeper and steeper. Just writing an article or two here and there won’t help you much.

Best Example: Well, other than mine, of course, check out Henneke of Enchanted Marketing. She has a wonderful, readable, fun blog on business writing and blogging. And she walks her talk. It’s all about well-written, relevant content. If you don’t have that as a foundation, it’s a total waste of time.

Hard and Proactive = Presentations

I built my business on presentations in front of live audiences at professional associations and chambers of commerce. It got me attention, added people to my mailing list and generated warm leads for marketing coaching.

And I still do presentations today in the form of webinars. I just filled my recent group program with the help of a couple webinars (also called video conferences). They most certainly do work.

But I put presentations in the hard category, not because they are all that hard to give, but can take a long time to prepare. The last one I did took me two full days. There were about 200 slides (whew).

Yes, that’s not the only way to do a webinar. You can just go live on Zoom Video, and that can work as well. You ultimately have to find your style and test what works.

Presentations are proactive in that at the end you can ask for the business. And, of course, you can turn the recording of the webinar into a video in a snap and send it out to those on your list. Watch it here.

So presentations will always play a big part in my marketing toolkit.

One other thing though – If you don’t have a LOT of people on your email list, good luck in getting much of an attendance. Yes, you can do guest presentations hosted by others, but you don’t have the same control and ability to pitch your professional services.

How to Ace Any STEM Course!! (Study Tips)

Being a Biomedical Engineering Student has really forced me to understand and increase my knowledge in various Engineering and Medical related topics. A very general way of describing this field is that we are the bridge between the Engineering Field and the Medical Field. It is our job to fully analyze and make sure the design we create and process is safe from an engineering point of view, and at the same time we are trained to make sure that our engineered prototype is medically safe enough for the given patient. Due to these factors we are trained in various different courses across the board really. So, as time has progressed I’ve gained many studying techniques I use to this very day that help me do well in an analytical engineering course or a heavy memorization based course such as Biology or Biochemistry. However, all of these courses require you truly to understand the topic. Simply memorizing things never really worked well for me!

 For Biology/Biochemistry Related Courses

These courses usually required me a bit of time to understand and really memorize some of the material. So firstly I would plan out a chunk of time before any exam which I would fully dedicate to just simply study. I usually give myself 5 -7 days. If you need more take more that’s fine! Utilizing your lecture notes is key here. I would read my lecture notes right before class and after class as well. This should just take 10-15 mins. This isn’t meant to make you know everything about the topic, it’s just simply easing you into each lecture. That way you feel somewhat confident going to class. Next, every night I would take the lecture notes and make them into my own separate notes. This is the part of actually understanding the concepts in detail. I find writing everything out while saying it out loud actually really helped me grasp the material faster. So I would make my notes for each chapter, before the exam. Again reading it out loud, while writing it. Also I was never the person to really focus on making my notes aesthetically pretty. A lot of students in my classed had beautiful notes, and when I tried doing that I found I never really understood as much material as I should have. So find what works for you! If you love making pretty notes and it helps you do well, go for it! I however, have notes that look like chicken scratch. I would only highlight/underline key vocabulary and points I knew the professor would test on their exam. The notes I would usually have done around 4 days before my exam. Next, was just reviewing my notes and adding to them. I also have another tip which is something that I’d never heard anyone do. You guys know those access codes you have to buy early in the semester, the ones you uses to access your mandatory homework assignments. Well use that online portal. I would ALWAYS use the “Study Area” or “Testing Area” from those portals. I would print out the practice exams from there with the answers and try to understand why those were the answer. This method would always allow me to understand key concepts. And if you think about it, the textbook publisher website definitely will know what you’ll be tested on. Since the professor is using their textbook! YouTube videos also really helped me better prep for exams. I would watch tutorials anytime I got stuck on a concept.  For Engineering Courses e.g. Circuits, Mechanics, Processes Course, etc.…

I can’t emphasize enough that practicing problems is key here. There comes a time in your engineering degree, where the further you progress you don’t really get assigned homework. So all your grade depends on is essentially exams which are typically weighed 30-40% each. So this means, you are fully in charge of how much effort and work you put into a class. If your professor is using a specific textbook in your class use that to do your practice problems. I would usually go crazy doing this lol. I 99% of the time usually did all of the problems from the textbook before any exam. This would usually range from 100-200 problems. You do not have to do this many problems. If you do 10 and you understand that’s great. Personally, I just found the more I did the more I would understand each different scenario. And any time I would I would get stuck at a specific step, I would mark it first. Then I would refer to the solutions manual. The solutions manual is something that really helped me personally. But if I didn’t understand the solution in the manual I would put a sticky note on that problem. And I’d go running to my professor lol. I used office hours like no joke. I practically lived outside my professors’ office haha. There I would learn a lot more, on where specifically I was going wrong. Also keep in mind engineering exams are all about your process. When professors mark your work they could care less about the final answer. The answer itself is probably worth 2 out of 30 points. There’s been times where a problem is given and I’ve filled out 2 pages of work showing my process, but got 0 points for it. Simply because my process was wrong. So really understand how your professor grades, ask them questions. But show your work. Always. I would also be a part of a lot of group chats with my engineering friends. There we would post problems together and work on them together. These GROUP-ME chats are so useful because you can send pictures of your work to one another. I would highly suggest you join the GROUP-ME chats for your specific engineering course. Last but not least, before any of my engineering exams, I would create my own practice problems package. This usually consisted of 4 problems for each chapter. The first one would be the most basic/simplest example and the 4th problem would always be the most difficult practice problem possible. Between these 4 problems I would compare the differences and analyze why I did certain steps. I would use these packages all the time. Heck, I would even work on these packages with my friends. And when it came time for the final exam I already had around 12 packages ready to review quickly and efficiently.

i was scrolling through tumblr, decided to go through my recent likes and organize things into my different blogs. listened through some of velvet-seas, enjoyed a mix by dj lance lockarm, went to look them up on spotify, couldn't find anything so i turned to google. on google i scrolled until i landed on their discogs page and then a review from FreakyTrigger, which then led me to explore their website until i opened enough tabs to satiate my curiosity. i browsed their music section, found an article about documenting the writer's music listening history for a day, which was inspired by harkive.org.

and after doing a brief skim of their site and discovering that their annual review day is coming up on the 21st, i decided that i will do a quick rundown of today's day in music. i'll get back to reading more about the project and jotting down ideas, but i want to get this typed up before i get in too deep.

so what have i listened to today, thursday july 15th, 2021?

on my way to see george, i started where i left off on my camp 2012 playlist. i can't remember when i created this playlist on itunes/apple music, i wonder if it was before i even started streaming music? though, i find it hard to believe that i would have made it right after camp that summer. i'm going to do a quick google search and see if i can find out if there's a way to see when playlists in itunes/apple music were made like they show in spotify. so i'm not finding anything. oh well. last evening, mom and i went to the mall, parked by nordstrom. it was raining all afternoon, so the sky was still grey and it was heavy outside. late summer afternoons in the mall parking lot hold a particular weight for me so i decided to queue up my camp 2012 playlist, starting with silver lining by rilo kiley. this morning, the playlist started back up halfway through some devil by dave matthews, a song i probably haven't heard in at least 5 years. i graduated high school 6 years ago. i was in a daze in the car this morning, so i wasn't really listening or singing along. on swann, the shuffle played 3 consecutive red hot chili pepper songs (by the way, universally speaking, snow), i wanted to go back to my 2012 self. IF I MAY by pete francis made me nostalgic, dog nails tap the kitchen floor. while i waited in my car, hey hey hey and for the summer set me back a few years while i scrolled through tumblr and eventually tried to read a few pages of the spotify play. i shut the car off halfway through tutim techno.

at george's, i can't really remember the music he played. we talked about annoying tiktok songs and his love for die antward. we talked briefly about fiona apple while paper bag was playing. i saw something about the new john mayer album while scrolling through something and tried to find a leaked version of wild blue. queued up his interview with zane lowe on apple music to listen to on my way to rollin oats.

listened to that on the way there, can't remember if any music was playing while shopping. finished the interview on the way home, excited for the record to drop tomorrow. he talked about the construction of fake memories, i conjured up thoughts of making up memories from camp in the 90s, moments that are so fancifully constructed, they could never be real, and yet they feel so tangible. but i will continue to live in this secluded part of my mind that allows them to exist as if they not only actually happened, but i was actually there to experience it. this cannot be mentioned without acknowledging the role that exploring the camp coleman alumni group pages played in 2011-2012.

i didn't listen to music again until i went to go take a nap in my room after i was no longer satisfied with any of the comedy central stand up clips the youtube algorithm was feeding me. last night i fell asleep to a live performance by katy j pearson, thinking how wonderful her voice is. i shuffled the vicarious voyage playlist by jdavfromtheblock on spotify, adding some songs by adron to the queue and to my liked songs.

woke up and continued to listen to the playlist. after dinner, i sat on my bed while doing some GRE practice tests and continued to listen to the playlist. got distracted when i hit full moon by mitch margo, recognizing it from the seafaring stranger compilation by light in the attic i added sometime last year to my apple music library. i went through and queued some yacht rock songs (peter gallway, ned doheny). made it further along the playlist until it reached bumble buddies by jacob mann, which reminded me that jonwayne existed and didn't satisfy my expectations all over again (though, i did enjoy 40 winks).

at this point i had made it to scrolling through velvet-seas and started queuing up stuff i reblogged on there. listened to some cleaners from venus, unsure where i stand on that kind of music. it's not my vibe right now, but it has been and will be at some point.

somewhere between that and azealia banks, i hopped onto the dj lance lockarm mix which is ultimately what led me to typing these words right now. from his discogs, i found a 6 hr mix, people like us - a brief history of sound collage, he was featured in and then started listening to that on some random website google brought me to. i liked the third song, deck the hall by akufen, which i could only find on youtube. this of course led me down a little bit of a spotify hole and i added some recommended artists to the queue, none of which i really loved. i was ready to settle into another playlist, but i was still in a dance vibe, so i skimmed kelly's work from home playlist which then reminded me that not my boss! by blue hawaii existed, so i enjoyed that. somehow landed on tokyo ghetto pussy, which is what i was listening to right before i decided to listen to deck the hall by akufen again. going to have to download this one. ok just downloaded it and did a quick skim of his discogs. i have successfully stressed my spotify out, so i just quit and reopened the app.

so that's where i'm at. after this i am going to add music to apple music from my liked songs on spotify and then finish reading some tabs. this ended up being a lot longer than i anticipated, though i'm not fully surprised because i know that i can write forever about this stuff. this was really cool to see and i'm interested in potentially making this a daily habit.

AY2020/2021 Y2S1 Module Reviews

This semester proved to be a pain as expected. Said pain coming mostly from BT2101 and CS2030. Everything was conducted online with the exception of the weekly lab sessions for CS2030 so I only had to go to school for 1 day. F2F CS2030 recitations were optional so I gave up and just watched the recorded zoom session instead of going to school just for a class half way through the semester. I usually miss the live zoom sessions because mine was at 1pm and I am almost always still having lunch at that time and not ready at all. Also i missed about half of my BT2102 tutorials because I simply forgot I had tutorials at that time (2-4pm). They still awarded me nicely for participation much to my surprise (7/10).

CS2030 proved to be intensive not only in the aspect of planning code design but also the actual implementation itself.. (thinking about how to solve the problem and/or get the expected outputs)..  Really struggled my way through the start although that really was only the tip of the iceberg because I had no prior experience in Java and the introductory Winter Workshops were reserved exclusively for freshmen or I missed the deadlines can’t remember.. The first few lectures got us familiar with Java Programming before diving deep into Functional Programming which is a lot harder to grasp vs Object-Oriented Programming which was introduced to us in CS1010S already. The hardest part comes with Streams but honestly after learning streams so many processes can be coded so much more efficiently as compared to OOP, really simplifies some of the tasks when using FP rather than OOP. Interesting to note that this streams part ties in well with BT2102′s coding part where we learnt aggregation pipelines in MongoDB and MySQL i believe the concepts felt similar??

Weekly Labs

Pretty manageable imo , compared to the project ofc (rolls eyes)

This semester they changed things up a bit and shifted all the weekly labs deadlines to finals so we had more control in terms of time management and our progress in the labs. Naturally we are expected to do them every week but say we are busy in a certain week for other modules we can always come back on another. I was always behind by like a month compared to my friends who were more on task.

Individual Project

Project part 1 was still okay for the Discrete Event Simulator (DES) basically designing a system for customers to queue and be served and recording the relevant work done at the appropriate times using OOP.

The hardest part was project part 2 where you had to rewrite the whole chunk in part 1 FP style and also they added a lot of more complex simulations and cases which I really just gave up entirely after completing level 2.

It was so hard it was traumatic. Level 3 had something to do with importing a random number generator and the test cases only get more confusing and long i just really had no brain cells left for the work worth only 7% before deducting late submissions penalty (bc brain slow LOL) and the code design criteria and checkstyles. I was so mad that it takes up so much time and effort just to be worth a petty 7% that I gave up entirely didnt even finish reading the questions (which was also pretty darn long). Sorry i am dumb. Please be proud of me I am trying my best.

I have zero idea who in the department decided to rig the difficulty of this project by so much up compared to previous semesters. They really expected too much out of us i am so sorry to disappoint.

Practical Assessments 

Basically similar to weekly lab exercises but you have to do it within the time frame during a lab session. You get to take home and re-edit the code to get the full marks and are moderated according to the changes you made compared to the one submitted during the PA itself. That also means if you do not submit the correct full marks version of the code in a week, you do not get moderated and will be awarded with the marks scored in lab which is obviously 0 for me I had over 70 compilation errors and you might be thinking how. But trust me i am too, confused how. Most people will score around 0-2m in lab but taking it home and refining the whole code with minimal changes and will be graded according to the amount of changes made to get the final code. Tests you how close you can get to the correct outputs within the time frame whether you already had it in your head.

Final Exam

Comes in MCQs, a few case questions consisting of subparts if i remembered correctly some of which required you to write out a possible code (2-3 lines) converting oop to streams, synchronous to asynchronous etc. There are plenty resources (pyps) floating around in the gc so you can use them well for revision.

Theoretical content was tested i dont really know how to put in words but you may be able to code well even though you may have some of the concepts wrong

We only did pure coding work in labs, projects and practical assessments so this really reinforces your understanding of the material

Considering I didnt finish project part 2 this is quite a decent grade already really thankful i dont have to go through this ordeal again. See you never.

This is the second module that I have been struggling with since the start of the semester. Tutor changed after the first session, the former tutor was much better and clearer in her explanations. This is quite a math-intensive course and requires some knowledge of linear algrebra and thus the pre-requisities. Maths has never been my strong suit (well except in primary school) so I struggled hard with this module. Nearing the end we learnt about deep learning neural networks which was pretty interesting and really broadened my perspectives on the future of machine learning. The pace was okay, but the lecturer seems to just repeat the words on the lecture slides in his lectures. The lectures were seemingly simplified from the reference texts he used but is nevertheless still daunting to look at to revise. Project was a 4-5 people groupwork where we had to conduct all the stages of data analytics from data exploration, cleaning of data to data mining, conclusions etc. There were an additional 3 assignments that we had to do together with our groupmates by the stipulated deadlines. This module requires a lot of work and preparation. Am glad to be able to pass.

For this module, all 13 missions are to be done by the last date of submission for finals which was a 300 question quiz held on LumiNUS. Missions are assigned weekly where we go to the WordPress website the professor has built, a server that he regularly does maintenance on and in it he uses a tracker to track our progress through clicking links and submitting short answer questions sometimes. Most of them were done by clicking of links and we were told to disable our Adblockers if any to prevent interruptions or his system not capturing our data. We were encouraged to do it weekly although the deadline was the end of the semester. One of the missions included us doing some Linux practice penetration questions on Kali, it was a bit tough but other than that the other missions were pretty simple and straightforward. After every mission done we were to do a practice PAQ which is not graded and upon submission would give us the model answers to study in preparation for FPAQ the final week submission. PAQ consists of 5 themes * 7 questions = 35 questions, whereas FPAQ has 300 over questions to be done over the span of a week, the reading week. Carpal tunnel.

This is a general education module everyone in NUS is required to take. I dont think I learned much so I am really only there to go through the motion. There are a few pillars that the department touches on mainly Physics, Engineering, Design, etc to show how the different disciplinary courses are interconnected and how/why is questioning important. Really low maintenance course, we do a 6 or 10 MCQ quiz every week prior to the lecture for that pillar. Tutorial was online via zoom and really low workload in general. Final week was on design and we had to make a wallet for our partner and explain why or how we chose the designs, and also submitting a word essay on our reflections of things we learned.

How to Get More Traffic Using Bing Analytics

It’s easy to forget that Google isn’t the only search engine.

Sure, it dominates the market. In the time it’s taken you to read these two and a half sentences, Google has processed about 280,000 searches.

But you should also look beyond Google when it comes to driving traffic to your site.

Take Bing, for instance. It has a 2.83% share of the global search market. Its search engine powers Yahoo, which holds 1.65% of the market share. Combined, that’s just shy of 5%. Do you want to miss out on 5% of the global search market?

If not, you should be focusing on Bing and Bing Analytics to boost your web traffic.

What is Bing Analytics?

We all know about Google Analytics. It’s the tool we rely on to track and analyze our traffic. So you’d assume Bing would have a direct equivalent, but that’s not the case.

Bing Analytics technically doesn’t exist (although Bing itself returns almost 40 million results for the phrase “Bing Analytics”). What does exist is Bing Webmaster Tools, a dashboard with a bunch of Google Analytics-like features. But, it is more like Google Search Console.

So when I say “Bing analytics” in this article, I’m referring to all the stuff within Bing Webmaster Tools.

Why You Need to Review Bing Analytics

If Bing is a significant source of traffic for your site, or you hope it’ll become one, the site’s analytics tools will help maximize your search performance.

Bing Webmaster Tools offers plenty of features to improve your rankings and grab more traffic from Bing.

I won’t give you an exhaustive guide to the Webmaster Tools feature set here, but we’ll review Bing analytics’ most critical aspects and show you how they work.  

Glean Insights From Bing & Yahoo

With Google Search Console, you’re limited to exploring your search performance within Google. Sure, that’s a lot of data. But it’s not the whole story.

Bing analytics in Webmaster Tools helps fill in some of the blanks by combining data from Bing and Yahoo. That means you can see the impressions, clicks, rankings, and the specific keywords that bring users to your site (plus a whole lot more) from two different search engines.

Submit Your Sitemap

By submitting your sitemap to Bing, you make it easier for the search engine to crawl and index your site. That makes it more likely that searchers will find your content and services.

You can see all the sitemaps you’ve submitted to Bing via Webmaster Tools. And it’s simple to submit a new sitemap from the Webmaster dashboard.

Control Bing’s Crawl Speed

Does your site get a ton of traffic at specific times? For example, if your site gets a ton of traffic on weekday mornings, you don’t want search crawlers putting your servers under even more strain.

That’s why the Crawl Control feature within Bing analytics is so useful. It lets you tell Bing when you’re busiest, so it’s like asking a cold caller to call you back later when you’re off work. It’s worth noting that you can’t do this within the new Google Search Console.

Demote Sitelinks

Sitelinks, or “deep links” to use Bing’s terminology, are those links that show up just below a site’s main listing on the search engine results page (SERP).

Here’s how they look on Bing:

Google doesn’t give you any control over the sitelinks it displays. Bing does. Specifically, Webmaster lets you block individual pages, so they don’t show up as sitelinks.

Let’s say I don’t want my article 10 Powerful Instagram Marketing Tips to appear on a sitelink any more. Maybe it’s not relevant to my current strategy, and it doesn’t make sense for it to be displayed so prominently within SERPs. With Bing, I can control that.

Set up Geo-Targeting

You can’t do good local SEO without geo-targeting. It’s the feature that lets you tell search engines which parts of your site should be shown to users in different locations.

Webmaster Tools is the home of all your Bing geo-targeting needs. Whether for a whole domain, a subdomain, a directory, or an individual page, just enter the URL and choose your desired target country or region.

Of course, you can do the same with Google Search Console, but it’s much more fiddly. It’s important to geo-target on Google and Bing.

Connect Social Accounts & App Stores

Chances are, your online presence doesn’t start and end with your website.

You’ve probably got several social profiles, or your products are on all the big app stores.

Those pages are a big part of your brand. So wouldn’t it be great if there was an easy way to see how many impressions and clicks you’re getting from them?

You can, thanks to Bing analytics. By linking your social and app profiles, you can get a whole extra level of insight into how people are finding you online.

Understand How Bing Sees Your Site

The world of search algorithms and ranking factors can be pretty impenetrable. At times, the search engines seem to be going out of their way to make life more confusing.

Wouldn’t it be great if you could lift the lid on a search engine and see what it sees?

The Bing analytics Index Explorer allows you to do exactly that. It shows you how Bing sees your site, laid out in a Windows Explorer-style series of folders and files.

This feature makes it simple to find all the data Bing has collected while crawling your site, so you can identify what needs fixing. If Bing’s crawlers are stumbling across a bunch of redirects, blocked URLs, or pages infected by malware, you’ll find out with Index Explorer.

How to Add Bing Analytics to Your Website

Adding Bing analytics verification to your site is an easy process. Head to the Webmaster Tools site, sign up with a Microsoft, Google, or Facebook account, and then you’ll be given two options:

Import from Google Search Console: If your site’s already verified by Search Console, you can skip any extra verification with Bing.

Add your site manually: You’ll need to make detectable changes to your site so Bing can verify you.

Bing offers four ways to verify your site:

Log into your hosting provider account for automatic verification

Upload the XML file on your webserver

Add a custom meta tag to your site’s homepage

Edit your site’s CNAME record with a custom verification code

Boosting Your Traffic With Bing Analytics

Here are some of my favorite tips for using the Bing analytics Webmaster Tools features to increase your organic traffic.

Find Low-Hanging Fruit With SEO Reports

Google Analytics and Search Console are great, but it can be hard to tell what changes impact your search rankings.

In contrast, Bing analytics runs automated reports that flag areas on your site that don’t follow Bing SEO best practices.

Better still, the SEO reports feature ranks issues by severity (either Low, Moderate, or High). It will tell you how frequently the error occurs on your site, and how many pages are affected.

But remember, it won’t do all your SEO legwork for you. Even if you make every change Bing recommends, you won’t automatically rocket to the top of the rankings.

For example, it won’t tell you if your backlink profile is weaker than your rivals’ or targeting the wrong keywords.

But it’s fantastic for identifying common issues that can harm your search performance, like missing title tags or multiple H1s on the same page.

View Page-by-Page SEO Improvements

But you don’t just have to seek out SEO improvements at the site-level. Bing analytics also offers a page-level tool called SEO Analyzer. Enter a URL from your site, and Bing will check it against approximately 15 SEO best practices.

Interestingly, you can even use it on pages that aren’t indexed. So if you’re building a new campaign landing page but don’t want it to be crawled yet, you can still check that it’s ticking all the right SEO boxes.

Assess Your Mobile-Friendliness

Around half of all web traffic is on mobile devices. That’s been the case for the last three years, so there’s no excuse for your site not to be mobile-friendly by now.

Like Google, Bing offers a mobile-friendliness test in Webmaster that analyzes how well your site performs on mobile. You can use it to analyze any site, not just your properties, so it’s useful for checking in on competitors, too.

Now, it’s worth noting here that Bing doesn’t place quite as much value on mobile-friendliness as Google. Whereas Google has switched to mobile-first indexing for all websites, Bing isn’t planning to follow suit.

On the flip side, Bing does treat user experience as a ranking factor, unlike Google. If mobile users are having a horrible time on your site and are bouncing straight off, your rankings will likely suffer.

Find Page Two Keywords

An SEO’s job is to make the most significant impact on a site’s organic traffic with the time and resources available.

With Bing analytics, you can use the Search Keywords tool to identify terms you’re ranking just off page one of SERPs (i.e., in positions 11-20).

Those keywords are probably generating very little organic traffic for you at the moment because few searchers make it past page one. But they’re not far off, and a little tweaking could make all the difference.

Analyze the pages where those terms appear, look at the sites ranking above you, and figure out how to leapfrog them. Maybe you need a few more quality backlinks, or perhaps you need to optimize your content.

Do Keyword Research

Once you’ve grabbed all the low-hanging fruit by fixing simple errors and optimizing page two keywords, it’s time to explore new opportunities.

To do that, you’ll need to start with some keyword research. And did you know Bing is the only search engine to offer a keyword research tool based on organic data?

Even better, that data comes from searches on both Bing and Yahoo.

Bing’s keyword research tool has a few useful features. It shows you:

Organic search volumes for any given keyword: Helps identify if a given keyword has sufficient search volume to make it worth targeting.

Related keywords: Bing uses your “seed keyword” to provide suggestions for other relevant terms and their search volumes.

Results filtered by country, region, or language: You can even select multiple countries using the same language, such as the US, UK, and Australia.

As search engine keyword tools go, Bing’s is one of the more powerful, although it doesn’t offer advanced insights of a dedicated tool like Ubersuggest.

Conclusion

Ask 100 people in the street to name a search engine, and chances are they’ll all say “Google.”

Just because Bing isn’t a frontrunner doesn’t mean website owners can afford to ignore it. It still processes billions of searches a month, so you must include it in your ongoing SEO analysis.
