Sooooooo life update?

I'm getting married to the love of my life after being together for almost 2 years. We definitely didn't do the stereotypical uhaul method but we also didn't go too slowly either lol.

Also we are currently living in and learning all about our new house?! We have a beautiful old home, over 120 years old, that we are turning into our own little oasis in the middle of town. Also discovering all the wonderful "landlord specials" the previous owner blessed us with repairing.

I'd like to use this space to mostly talk about the different home repairs/decorating that we're going to be doing/two queer women living together in a successful relationship if that's anything anyone here wants to see. It's crazy to think how far I've come from where I started with this little blog and how much I've gone through, and I'm not quite ready to give it up just yet 😊

Wow, I didn't expect the interior of this home. It's an 1848 Greek Revival in Beverly, NJ, (I had to look it up- never heard of it), 11bds, 4.2ba, and has a pending sale for $999K. Check this one out- I heard that it was on the market before with photos the owners took w/a cheap camera and all their stuff in the house. They cleaned it up and hired a professional photographer, so I found the original photos, b/c you know how much I love before & after. I hope you enjoy it.

And, this is the photographer's. Can this be the same home? W/o any redo? Which one is really how it looks? I mean didn't the pending buyers notice?

This is the remodel. Look at the new bar. I don't know, it was kind of old Hollywood glamor before. Art deco.

Honestly, the dining room looks much better empty. You see the superb details of the painted floor and that gorgeous piece in the back.

They refreshed the kitchen- painted the cabinets black and got rid of the laminate island, making it brown wood.

They added chandeliers to the pot rack.

They didn't show the everyday dining room, either. Look at the wonderful brick wall.

I don't know why the photographer skipped this room. I like it.

The 2nd. fl. bedrooms. They removed the owners framed pictures and featured the bookcase. The colors are so dfferent.

The primary bedroom was emptied out and photographed to show how large it is.

This is a better representation of the bath than the one above.

The photographer included pics of the attic bedrooms. The owners did not.

He also included another vintage bath photo.

He added this room with the cool ceiling.

And, he took photos of the huge basement.

He took photos of the lovely gardens.

The gazebo, and stairs down to the beautiful boardwalk on the Delaware River. The property is 2.2 acres.

Speaking of characters around Eddie aging, how does he deal with the existential dread of how everybody around him gets older and he stays the same? Eddie is in his early 80's, so he's most certainly seen a number of aging-related deaths already.

oh yeah i should have mentioned he teamed up with Lily after she jostled him out of a 3 year isolationist depression spiral because his horse died of old age

The first half of Eddie’s life was spent being overly cautious and he moving around a lot- he didn’t let many people in. He was burned pretty bad by his original buyer/first lover, and with animosity towards androids in that time, he was too scared of getting hurt, emotionally or physically. Eddie also knows he would get attached to people, he’s programmed to be a lover and provider after all, so he kept himself moving to not get too attached. His horse, Jacobsbane, was very special to him. She was a representation of his freedom and part of the inception of Los Ojos Negros. Her death just made him more guarded. Lily is an outlier, it wasn’t until recently, upon setting up in Heartbreak Gulch, that he’s actually allowing himself to have friends.

He has trouble with age, it doesn’t quite click for him, and when it does, he doesn’t like to think about it.

But, he accepts that he is an old computer. Software decay could kill him on any given day, might as well stop locking up his heart and feel the full array of artificial emotions he can.

When Kelly Marie Tran wore an áo dài designed by Thái Nguyễn to the Oscars in 2022, this moment created a magnificent stir, both among Americans and Vietnamese people of the diaspora who’d never seen our national garment represented on a red carpet. It was, in so many ways, a kind of permission to exist outside of the margins, to have our culture spotlit without explanation or apology.

Nguyễn remembers receiving a phone call from Tran, who asked if it was possible to create an áo dài in three days. He said, “[That call] woke me up.” After 16 hours of work, the team at Thái Nguyễn Atelier finished the áo dài hours before the award show. Nguyễn describes the way that American PR companies and buyers once told him that his name and identity were too ethnic; they didn’t think an áo dài would ever be a mainstream garment. “I’ve been yearning for that moment,” Nguyễn says, recalling the first time he saw Tran at the Oscars. “Afterward, a Vietnamese follower sent me a photo of her five-year-old daughter in an áo dài and said, ‘She can wear this now to a birthday party, instead of a Cinderella or Snow White gown.’” In fact, Nguyễn is co-writing Mai’s Ao Dai, a children’s book about a girl who discovers the beauty of áo dài, with Vietnamese American writer Monique Truong. Such representation is already changing the way younger generations are embracing the áo dài.

Greetings, boils and ghouls! Apologies for the radio silence, life has been...A LOT. But the newly shapeshifted The Miskatonic Institute of Horror Studies kicks off its online semester on Tuesday, and I'm unspeakably excited for our first class, "Terrors of the Mind" with David Metcalfe! I first saw David speak when he co-taught a class with Diana Walsh-Pasulka on representations of extraterrestrial phenomena in horror films, and I was thrilled that he wanted to come speak for us. And of course, he brought one of my personal favorite topics: Cold War-era psy experiments, as reflected in horror cinema of the 1970s and 80s!

I hope you can join us, but please note that we're operating at the new time of 2pm EST. This seems to be the sweet spot for international attendance, but don't fret, ticket buyers and season passholders will be able to view a video for a limited time for after the class.

FreenBecky (BeckFreen) and WLW representation after Gap the Series

I’m once again pulled into the world of Gap the Series, but in particular, the rich, warm fandom that has become FreenBecky or on occasion, BeckFreen, in its wake. As we all grapple with Gap the Series finally ending, the fandom seems to have gravitated towards the main stars, namely Rebecca “Becky” Armstrong and Freen Sarocha. This is a thing unto itself and vastly different from the fan service that the Rich Man’s Daughter gave us.

Here, we find an army of fans translating nearly all content from the actors across Tiktok, Twitter, Instagram, and Weibo from the Thai language to others’:

It’s a concerted effort among a web of individual to fan-club-run accounts that drum up enormous coverage, enthusiasm, admiration, funds for billboard ads or fan projects, and even gifts for the pair.

The fan community is self-sustaining in its growth; it is massive in Southeast Asia and South America, hashtags trending in one country or another, and even globally nearly every day. I have the impression that this fandom never sleeps and there is new content to traverse and giggle over every 12-hour cycle. It’s refreshing to see this level of self-sustained, growing adulation for actors of an LGBT show in countries that have traditionally been so conservative in their views and sorely underrepresented in mainstream media.

But it isn’t just the fans. There is consistent, honest regard in Freen and Becky’s interactions with each other, a world of memes and a language of their own that they share between themselves and with the fans (ex. “mami” and “honey” lines, the “phi-nong” interactions *wink-wink*).

We have so little of this attention and enthusiasm for and in the LGBT community with mainstream actors, but these two! They demonstrate a commitment to the fans that is unwavering and unprecedented. They are clear and vocal about their acceptance of the LGBT community, which make up so much of their fan base, trumpeting their advocacy at every opportunity simply by showing up together.

And oh! Do they have opportunity. They sell record amounts of product as the faces for a variety of brands on live streaming –from make-up, to magazines, to something as innocuous as seaweed chips.

Together or individually, they are constantly being promoted in magazines or on bright, LED billboards in Thailand and even so far as New York’s Times Square:

A magazine seems to be released nearly every week, and it has left fans languishing with empty pockets as they faithfully try to collect every single one. Though these magazines aren’t distributed internationally, an informal network of locals purchase them for international fans (or interfans, as they’re called), and ship them out at the buyer’s expense, which interfans are more than willing to cover.

Freen and Becky are adored, loved, and fiercely protected. It’s an amazing phenomenon to watch, and even more extraordinary to contemplate that their popularity has brought their relatively new promoters IdolFactory tremendous exposure and a mountain of ad cash. To an extent, because of such exponential growth, the company has been criticized for poor security and an inability to cater for a large fan base during events as it continues to hire woefully small, inadequate venues.

We deserve to be heard. LGBT content, specifically wlw content, is valuable, loved, adored. If it came to just the bottom line, it is also incredibly profitable. What a message to send to media creators, to brands! I want this to be heard loudly, and for media executives to realize that they are missing out by cancelling so many wlw-centred shows on their streaming services:

I want Gap the Series to have even more exposure and recognized as the phenomenon that it is –as the first wlw web series that has breached more than 17M collective views on YouTube. It is the singular show pushing very, very hard against the norm: whether against the persistent cancellations of many wlw shows, catering to a mainly Western audience, or the more Western narrative perpetuated in majority of famous LGBT media today.
