To say she expects Alistair is a lie. She's not even sure Alice expected him, so meeting at the front of their house comes as quite the surprise— if not a pleasant one.

She greets the nomad with a beaming smile, hands ready to take whatever she can from him. She's already thinking about spare rooms, but deep down she knows the attic will become his choice of residence for the duration he's here.

I was looking through AoUV for research purposes and I ended up taking note of the first line from each of the first POV chapters to see what kind of tone it set for that character. And honestly, kudos to Amanda and Charlie, if you think about it they all do a really good job of setting up the basis for the POV characters.

"The Lowe family had always been the undisputed villains of their town's ancient, bloodstained story, and no one understood that more than the Lowe brothers." Right away this establishes what the Lowes are like, how Alistair fits into that in regards to the tournament curse, and the fact that he and his brother are set apart from the rest because of their family.

"The funeral party flocked around the grave as the pallbearers lowered the casket into the earth." This opening line is written so passively that we don't even know whose funeral it is, and that's kind of the point. Immediately, we know that the Macaslans are closely tied to death, like scavengers, and that Isobel's identity will ultimately come back to the survival instincts of her family name.

"Callista Grieve did not wear white to her wedding." This one makes me feral, because the first line of Gavin's first POV chapter is literally about someone else. He's not even the main character in the first chapter of his own story. He's a guest, an afterthought, and his sister's eagerness to get away from the family only solidifies this starting point for him.

"The amphitheater at the edge of her family's estate always made Briony Thorburn feel like she was stepping onto a stage." I have to be honest and point out that this opening line makes Briony sound like a fucking idiot, because wow, it's almost like an amphitheater is a kind of stage. But looking beyond that, it speaks volumes that she's already putting herself at the center of the story before the final test even happens. It sets up her complete shock when she isn't chosen as champion, and the way she always makes herself the hero.

Just some interesting stuff about the way each of the POV characters are introduced!

It was bold of her to join him while he was showering, but Esme needed to shower too. It's not like he was hunting alone, after all. And since they had considerably downsized, it was the logical conclusion (that, or waiting until he'd finished… and where was the fun in that?)

So she slipped in, albeit with a smirk playing across her lips. They had been intimately involved for years now; they just had yet to share a shower together. It was something she enjoyed partaking in with Carlisle. Part of her couldn't bring herself to admit such to Alistair, both with the ache of losing Carlisle still present in her chest and the worry he would think her weird for such habits.

Still, her worries slipped away as easily as Alistair's arm did past her, even more so when he pulled her close. Her lingering smirk widened, sighing into his touch and loosely circling her arms over his shoulder so hands could clasp together behind his head.

His kiss enticed a contented sigh, his comments drawing a laugh from her as he pulled away. "Mm, but I have to entertain myself with eternity somehow," she countered, grabbing the soap and allowing it to lather against her skin. As dirty as she was, there was something familiar to mud-caked skin; it called back to her childhood on the farm. "Besides," she continued, offering him a playful glance, "what bad habits were you exactly thinking about?"

i think it's kinda funny that folks are saying gale reminds them of alistair b/c my first thought with him was snarky anders and thus i was both attracted to him and had alarm bells going off...

...meanwhile astarion is giving both fenris AND anders vibes so i was probably lost before i even got started

Alistair didn't need to sleep, but he was exhausted. He ran his hand over his face with a sigh as he shifted the cup in his hand. Ears picking up the sound of someone walking in. "You're not supposed to be back here."

for anyone wondering about my silly murderer/pizzabaker ship-

Alistair initially saw Peppino as an easy victim. a plump little snack for his rats. however, after a few deliveries and some small talk, he found himself unable to follow through with his initial plans. those little moments where the two of them would chat by the counter while Gustavo and Brick went and stored the meat in the freezer were so comfortable to him. he learned more and more about him until he realized that his prior want to kill this man has entirely fizzled. instead, he was overcome by a need to protect this man. to help him through the hard times he's facing, even if it's just by being there and listening to him. whether he liked to admit it or not, that silly little pizza maker has claimed his heart.

now- Alistair and fake Peppino is a different story-

when he and Peppino got comfy, he eventually came across fake Peppino, (who I'll now be calling 'Pino') who- despite never having met Alistair, was instantly very clingy towards him. and normally, being as touch aversed as he is, Alistair would have had MULTIPLE issues with that alone, but Pino was somehow different. it pretty soon got pretty clear that, since Pino was Peppino's clone, the two of them shared enough traits for Pino to develop the same feelings for the same person. although, Pino was a lot more open in that aspect. while Peppino was still trying to figure out what exactly he's feeling, Pino was already jumping around whenever Alistair was near, snaking his long arms around him, snuggling him and just being overall very open with his feelings. that in turn helped Alistair form the necessary connections to figure out Peppino's feelings as well. but it's not on HIM to approach him about it. whether or not Peppino is ready to confess is up to him.

and in the meantime, Alistair will just be there, waiting for that to happen..with Pino clinging to him like a koala..
