so i've been reading this wonderful platonic hanahaki Branch fic by @sarilolla, where Branch has familial hanahaki x4 from the loss of his brothers

and im like. not even finished with it. but my brain said "What if all five of them had hanahaki lol?"

so pls consider. post movie, all 5 of these idiots have hanahaki and are refusing to tell the others. this hanahaki isn't terminal, but it makes you ill and puts you in more danger from other diseases or injuries. (Injuries/illnesses such as getting the life sucked out of you in a diamond... *evil laugh*)

they're still on Vacay island, which is good bc Branch knows as soon as they return to Pop Village he's MADE, so he needs to figure out a plan QUICKLY. He's still getting used to opening up to ppl, especially his brothers

Bruce is considering telling them but hasn't had much a chance with the kids around. Floyd is hesitating, mostly bc he dosn't want to make them worried but also bc it's scary to admit. Clay is oscillating between making plans to tell them and making plans to hide indefinetly, and JD is fully planning to take this secret to his grave

cue several days of awkwardly trying to hide flowers, super obvious excuses that no one notices bc they are also trying to escape, and just alot of sus behavior. I think one of Bruce's kids has individually found out about and been sworn to secrecy by JD, Clay, Floyd and Branch (in that order).

Brandy knows everything and is trying so hard not to spill it, she just keeps trying to encourage Bruce even though he keeps losing his nerve or getting interrupted. Viva and Poppy are kinda playing interference on everyone, even each other, for their respective boys, so they're a little too preoccupied to find out.

cue kismet (who are in the know, at least w/ Branch) showing up. they're careful not to reveal anything out of respect for Branch, but they're also protective and make some pointed comments.

some people get up in their feelings, and it ends up with the brothers in a room together arguing until-

Branch coughs up four perfect flowers in front of them

he watches them fall in slow motion, their gentle descent like a guillotine to him, and he's seconds from panicking until-

"YOU HAVE IT TOO?"

anyway cue spiderman meme as they all reveal their hanahaki and then have an emotional convo

What books have you been reading since your last update?

I don't remember what I shared with my last update, so apologies if I repeat anything, but these are some of the books I've read over the past couple months:

•An Unfinished Love Story: A Personal History of the 1960s by Doris Kearns Goodwin (BOOK | KINDLE | AUDIO) I'm actually still reading this new book by the legendary Doris Kearns Goodwin, so I still have a couple of chapters to go, but I can definitely recommend it. This is undoubtedly the most personal book that DKG has ever written, and it's a fascinating story.

Sawamura Testuo

Main character from a manga that no one should ever read and also everyone should read because he’s fantastic. Trans man living in 50’s Japan with a mysterious background who within like a chapter of meeting him burns down the other MC’s apartment to incentivize him to work with him and like, does not even try to hide it but succeeds anyway. Cannot be summed up there’s seriously no way I can do him justice here. He’s everything

i just ughggn shes a CREEPY LADY and she doesnt even MEAN to be scary she just IS!!!!! and shes like 400 years old and from the 1600s and she does blood magic and tarot and shit and i just love her soso much <3

also looking close at the sheet music glimpse, i noted when i went "kiss me what?" and looked up the lyrics and it gave me that of those of a doris day rendition, that version apparently goes "down in lover's lane my dearie" instead of "lover's lane with you" despite that the latter creates a rhyme, and we do see the [my] rather than the [with] in the lyrics

the doris day version is a whole different arrangement certainly, and more downtempo

another thing that might suggest its arrangement, besides just its lyrics, being that that's three beats per measure in the sheet music, the doris day version sure is a waltz, and idk what time signature the kay starr version has but it's not 3/4....played out orville's line on a virtual keyboard too, definite harmonizing going on. now imagining it could go from this downtempo waltz and swing up into the kay starr version like whoa we gotta ease orv into this and he's never heard a song above 50 bpm in his life

Based on 8x24 – John is worried when he finds out Steve was hurt. He's also grateful to Joe for saving his son and making sure he got out of there...alive.

Pre-series: how Steve gets the purple heart or his gold star. There's a flashback in 8x24 of Steve getting injured in the field. He would have received an award for that. They didn't specify which one, though.

Steve gets sunburned really bad on his back. (McRollins or McKono) (ik this is a cliché; sorry, not sorry)

Maybe Steve was on his morning run and overheard an old lady in his neighborhood on the phone with a landscaping company to hire someone to mow her lawn. Steve doesn't want her to have to pay a bunch of money just for someone to cut her grass, so he offers to do it for free. She gratefully accepts. It's very hot out – like over 100°F. (Another cliché, ik)

Maybe later that night, right when Steve is about to go to bed (on his stomach), or in the middle of the night, he gets a case.

Emotional H/C:

Danny goes too far in his ranting or his insults; Kono tells him off and defends Steve and comforts Steve.

Steve has abandonment issues.

Post 6x19 – Steve tells Lou about his mom faking her death and his dad sending him and Mary away.

Veteran's Day or Memorial Day

Maybe Grace or one of Grace's teachers or her principal asks Steve or asks Grace or Danny to ask Steve to give a speech for Veteran's Day. Or Memorial Day.

Maybe Steve went to his Dad's grave and/or the Pearl Harbor Memorial and/or had to attend a ceremony. Without realizing what day it is and/or where Steve was, Danny starts ranting and teasing about Steve being late to work or for the speech/presentation at Grace's/Charlie's school.

Maybe at Grace's school students had to write letters to veterans; Grace writes hers to Uncle Steve.

Anniversary of attack on Pearl Harbor

Maybe Danny makes some comment without thinking and doesn't realize what day it is, and Steve gets pissed. Chin scolds Danny and tells him what day it is. Danny wants to go find Steve and apologize, but Chin tells him to let Steve cool off. Going after him now will only result in Steve retreating further behind his walls. Instead, Chin offers to go check on him later.

Chin and Steve talk about how Steve isn't sleeping.

Steve has self-worth issues.
