Being a defense attorney is an... utterly thankless job. He's thought to himself on more than one occasion over the past few days that he needs to give Phoenix more credit for everything he does, because he's certainly been seeing him in a new light as of late. It's not like Edgeworth hasn't always been impressed by him, though. To him, Wright is...

...Well. That's a topic for another day. At least Edgeworth's back to acting as a prosecutor again now, and everything's finally settling down. Though whenever he thinks of the danger that Wright was in just a few days ago, almost losing his life... it makes Edgeworth's stomach twist in anxiety, and he can only remind himself that what he should be feeling now isn't fear, but relief.

There is... one other thing, though. Something that's been creeping up on his thoughts, that he's constantly forced to think about even when he desperately wants to pretend it's not there. And that... is the topic of the supernatural. Starting with the moment when he was given the magatama, and ending with him being witness to an honest-to-god spirit channeling... Edgeworth didn't really have the time or opportunity to be shocked back then, but when he thinks about it all now, sometimes it feels like his whole world is being turned upside-down.

Perhaps that's a bit dramatic, but... how else can he describe the feeling of realizing that that everything he thought he knew about the world - how it works, what's possible and impossible - has been a lie? On top of that, it feels like his mind keeps drifting back to the topic even more than it should be, as of late... it's frustrating, and though he won't admit it to himself - there's something more there, too. A kind of fear buried deep inside him. A strange sense of something being unearthed. It's... as if the moment he took that magatama, something awakened inside him that he can't yet understand...

...What ridiculous notions.

"Wright. You know, you really should be resting." While Edgeworth knows that Phoenix was given the all-clear from the hospital a while back, he can't help but say it anyway. "I've had a hard enough time adjusting myself. You're not still carrying that magatama around, are you?"

edgeworth being a shit boss is so important to me. he’s absolutely unreachable and when anyone under him asks for assistance he experiences every stage of grief before telling them to “just do it” (like nike). he denies 50% of all PTO requests that end up on his desk. there are 0 unread emails in his inbox but he only replies to 1 in every 10. the most important part of his secretary’s job is making sure any prosecutor who loses a trial gets a children’s phonics workbook the next day. he only knows the names of prosecutors he’s worked with for 3+ years and calls everyone else You. he does not want to be in charge but he needs to be in charge because simply no one else could do it right (he is not doing it right).

I want Sebastian who just now has spent his first year under the wing of Edgeworth finally finishing his first trial alone

I want Sebastian who directed this investigation mostly on his own

I want Sebastian who personally uncovered the culprit by his own method and logic

I want a Sebastian who just won the trial and takes a few seconds to process that he did it; he won

I want a Sebastian who then runs out of the courtroom and outside are Kay, Miles, Gumshoe and Justine waiting for him

I want a Sebastian who breaks down crying with a smile because as soon as Miles saw him he said "You did good, I'm proud of you."

I want a Sebastian who gets all the acknowledgement he deserves

actually y'know what? i'm coming out as a fan of edgeworth calling phoenix "nick." he has done it maybe three times and not once has it been on purpose but it makes phoenix feel a little faint.

I don't consider the anime canon in my reading of AA so I don't even think any interpretation of MVK being a stereotypical wife/child-beater is necessarily "unrealistic", whatever you think that word means — to me, it means that it's fairly reasonable to believe that any man prone to murder out of sheer pettiness or who's so obsessed with having control and having the last word in his day-to-day and professional life is not treating his kids right — but I do think it's just really boring. Fics written in that vein feel less like character-studies and more like excuses to woobify Edgeworth into becoming more of a pain receptacle you're supposed to feel sorry for rather than an actual character, which make them less likely to move me and more to get me to roll my eyes.

Honestly? Edgeworth can admit to himself that Kay's ability to sneak around undetected and break into all kinds of places is rather impressive. But that doesn't mean he has to be happy about it when it happens to him!

With a sigh, and while he attempts to calm his heart-rate from rushing a mile a minute, Edgeworth gives Kay a pointed look. She knows him well enough to recognize that it's not an unfriendly one, though. Truth be told... it's always nice to see Kay like this, even if admitting it is harder than he'd like.

"...Well, that aside. It's been a while since I've seen you... but you seemed excited about something the last time we spoke. Has something happened?"

Phoenix’s decision to become a lawyer in part to save Edgeworth often is interpreted along the lines of “Phoenix changed his life to save Edgeworth because he’s gay for him.” and while I don’t think this is necessarily untrue, I think a much more compelling and realistic interpretation is that Phoenix’s reaction to seeing somebody he loves in trouble revealed to him his deep-seated desire to protect the innocent from injustice, so he became a lawyer.

Edgeworth has, in the grand scheme of things, very little to do with why Phoenix is a lawyer. he was, however, a catalyst for Phoenix unlocking that part of himself (along with Mia!). and, to me, the sentiment that love reveals who you are is much more romantic than the idea that Phoenix made a sacrifice only to save the man he loves. loving Edgeworth brings Phoenix closer in line with his true self, and it’s through his love that he sees the potential of who he could be. even if he couldn’t save Edgeworth or if he never even came face-to-face with him again, Phoenix would remain changed by his love and would stay on this path he’s realized he’s so well-suited to. becoming a lawyer was never a sacrifice for Edgeworth; it was the realization of who Phoenix is: a protector. that he realized this through his feelings for Edgeworth is almost immaterial.

Sometimes you gotta go a little crazy thinking about toxic mentor/student duos. It’s the “you made me a monster!” it’s the “You forced me to hurt you!” It’s the wild power imbalance between the idolizing student and the idol mentor. It's the broken illusion of perfection. It's the "almost considered you family but that ship has sailed." It's the "Are you proud of me?" and the years down the line "Are you proud of me now?"
