Motivation Drain
When a person feels ill, their mental and physical motivation can often diminish. Short term, such feelings may be beneficial, promoting rest and recuperation. But, with chronic illnesses, the reduced motivation may develop into severe apathy and depression â an extreme version of this being seen in cancer patients with cachexia (wasting syndrome). Recently, scientists have identified the brain circuitry behind this illness-induced motivation slump. Using a mouse model of cachexia, they showed that the neurons (green) of a brain region called the area postrema (pictured) were responsive to interleukin 6 â an inflammatory cytokine (type of small protein) found at unusually high levels in cachexia. In turn, these neurons inhibited the release of the feel-good factor dopamine in a key part of the brainâs reward system â thus sapping the animalsâ drive. Importantly, blocking this inflammation-neuronal circuitry, restored motivation in the cachectic mice, providing hope that such a strategy might benefit cancer patients too.

Cancer kills by lactate: how cellular junk becomes a signal to acquire more fuel
Cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome associated with rapid loss of body weight, mainly loss of fat and lean muscle. Patients with cancer cachexia often develop anemia, fatigue, asthenia and anorexia, which worsen their quality of life and reduce their tolerance to anticancer therapies. As a result, cachexia accounts for approximately 20% of patients with cancer-related deaths. To date,âŚ

Since I can't post on r/VisualNovels because I don't have enough interaction with the community to be allowed, I'll post my Visual Novel tier list here!
I won't be counting VNs I've seen others play, though Death Mark would be S tier
S: The House in Fata Morgana, THiFM:RfI, Seventh Lair, The Letter, The Hungry Lamb, Reverse 1999
A: Umineko, Pale Cachexia, Paranormasight, Higurashi Onikakushi-hen, Cage of Roses
B: Sound of Drop -fall into poison-, The Silver Case
C: Return to Shironagasu Island,
D: Kara no Shoujo, Werewolf -Heart of the Forest-
I'll be updating this list as I play more. I won't be reading any more of Higurashi since I've already consumed it in manga and anime form.
Also um no I'm not biased with THiFM:RfI and Seventh Lair, it's totally not because I love THiFM so much that I live and breathe for it. đ¤¨

For millions of people, losing muscle isn't just about weakness; it's about losing independence. Whether caused by Duchenne muscular dystrophy, aging or other degenerative conditions, muscle loss can make everyday activitiesâlike walking, climbing stairs or even standing upâa daily struggle. But a recent discovery from researchers at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy could help change that. The team, led by Ashok Kumar, Else and Philip Hargrove Endowed Professor of Drug Discovery and director of the Institute of Muscle Biology and Cachexia, discovered a potential therapeutic target in muscular disorders by identifying a previously unrecognized role of a protein called Fn14 in regulating satellite cell stability and function. They have published their findings in JCI Insight.

im curious how your discourses around eating disorders/disordered eating would fit around my situation - i have difficulty with switching between tasks and with percieving the passage of time, and of late have also completely lost my appetite for 90% of the food avaliable to me (college dining :/ ) even the stuff i used to like, presumably due to finals stress creating a need to avoid strong sensory experiences like flavors and textures. exacerbating this is both the amount of steps it takes to get to the dining hall and (presumably) a shrunken stomach leading to less food overall. im not particularly concerned about my weight nor do i have a desire not to eat - just a lack of sufficiently motivating desire to get up and do it. its also complicated by lactose intolerance and a wheat sensitivity making a lot of the foods in the DCs feel as though they carry risk on those grounds - the easiest things to eat might give me horrible gas etc. but honestly like. i have lactaid and the wheat pills i should just use them
im not really sure i follow what you're asking lol. the eating disorder concept is discursively constructed around the notion of conscious refusal to eat. im not proprietary about it but it sounds like what you're saying is that you would find these discourses inapplicable to your life. there are plenty of ways to starve or become malnourished sans conscious refusal Ă la icd ed codes. eg cachexia is a common feature of many chronic conditions & in medical discourse does not constitute prima facie evidence for a psychiatric dragnet dx. it's also not unusual for starvation itself to precede & cause the psychological development of the compulsive and anxiety-regulating feedback loops that noumenally comprise the ed dx (see: minnesota semistarvation experiment).

When we talk about brave people, in my eyes few can surpass the bravery of Jane Haining, who was born on June 6th 1897 in Dunscore, Dumfries & Galloway.
Itâs only in the past few years that Jane Haining has justifiably, been given her place in history, Iâve know of her story for a number of years, thanks mainly to the small plaque on The Vigil Monument on Calton hill.
Jane lost her mother at the age of five and grew up a determined, capable woman. She worked for ten years in a threadmakerâs in Paisley, but at a meeting in Glasgow about the Jewish Mission she turned to a friend and said, prophetically: âI have found my life-work.â She got the call to work at a Church of Scotland mission to the Jews in Budapest in 1932.
Famous for her broad Scots accent, she was popular with the 400 children, a mix of Christians and Jews, attending the school. Many were orphans, from broken or poverty-stricken homes, while others were sent simply because they got an excellent education from the Scots.
She loved her little ones. In one letter, she wrote: 'We have one nice little mite who is an orphan and is coming to school for the first time. She seems to be a lonely wee soul and needs lots of love. We shall see what we can do to make life a little happier for her.â
Another letter read: 'We have one new little six-year-old, an orphan without a mother or a father. She is such a pathetic wee soul to look at and I fear, poor lamb, has not been in too good surroundings before she came to us .. she certainly does look as though she needs heaps and heaps of love.â
She was in Scotland on leave when World War 2 broke out, but immediately undertook the hazardous journey back to Budapest to help the Jewish children.
Later the missionaries were ordered back to Scotland to safety when the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944. Jane Haining disobeyed and remained to take care of her children. 'If these children need me in the days of sunshineâ, she said, 'how much more do they need me in the days of darkness?â Her sister Nan O'Brien later recalled: 'It was no surprise that she refused to come back. She would never have had a momentâs happiness if she had come home and left the children.â
During the war the Nazi brutality accelerated with murder, violence and terror and the little Jewish children were increasingly under threat. Jane protected them to the best of her ability.
Jane Haining was denounced to the Nazi authorities and SS men raided the place early in May. They searched her office and her bedroom, gave her 15 minutes to get ready and took her away. She was thrown in jail on charges of British espionage and helping Jews. She was accused of working among Jews and of weeping! She wept as she had to sew the yellow stars of David onto the dresses of her children .
One of her former wards later recalled: 'I still feel the tears in my eyes and hear in my ears the siren of the Gestapo motor car. I see the smile on her face while she bade me farewell. I never saw Miss Haining again, and when I went to the Scottish Mission to ask the minister about her, I was told she had died. I did not want to believe it, nor to understand, but a long time later I realised that she had died for me, and for others. The body of Miss Haining is dead, but she is not alone, because her smile, voice and face are still in my heart.â
Jane Haining was deported along with some of her Jewish children to the death camp Auschwitz. In three months 1,300,000 were liquidated in Auschwitz, among them No. 79467, Jane Haining, who refused to reject her children and showed herself to be a saint. She died for her beliefs and was gassed along with a batch of Hungarian women on August 16th, 1944, at the age of 47.
Because Jane Haining was a British citizen and passport-holder, the Church of Scotland was sent her death certificate from Auschwitz: 'Miss Haining, who was arrested on account of justified suspicion of espionage against Germany, died in hospital, July 17, of cachexia brought on by intestinal catarrh.â
In 1997 Yad Vashem, the Holocaust Martyrs and Heroes Memorial in Jerusalem, awarded Jane Haining a medal and a place among the Righteous Among the Nations for her selfless dedication to the children. The award was presented to her sister, Nan O'Brien of Londonderry, Northern Ireland, by the Israeli Ambassador to Britain at a ceremony in Glasgow.
She is remembered in the stained-glass windows of Queenâs Park Church in Glasgow and at the Church in Dunscore, as well as a memorial there, as seen in the pics, in book form. A plaque remembers her aerected by the Budapest Jewish community, 1984.Vorosmarty utca 51, Budapest. Jaane is also remebered on Jerusalem Yad Vashem Memorial Hall of Names
In 2017 Jane Haining was honoured by the city of Budapest being the focus of a new exhibition in the Holocaust Memorial Centre. Zoltan Toth-Heinmann, the centre spokesman stated that he was determined to ensure that as many people as possible learn about Haining, who was posthumously honoured by the British Government for "preserving life in the face of persecutionâ
The second pic is Jane Haining Quay.

So.. say that Arthur was able to recover from tb, what would be the hardest part of recovery?
In a hypothetical situation? Honestly, for Arthur, it would be the realisation that he will never physically be the same as he was before his illness, and all the rest he needs.
As much as recovery is possible (less so in the 1800s, if at all), TB still leaves a lot of permanent damage, even beyond the respiratory system. It can take years for just your lungs alone to recover, and even then, they'll never have the full strength and capability that they once had.
It's the same with muscle, because Arthur's weight loss wasn't just him losing body fat. Cachexia is a condition that goes hand in hand with TB, it causes muscle loss (specifically muscle protein) that cannot be fully reversed, even after recovery. It's a very complex metabolic syndrome that affects almost everything in the body, like scarring your heart muscle, which causes a heap of other problems.
But most importantly, Arthur would need to work very hard to put weight back on. And knowing Arthur, that's something he'll especially struggle with. His self esteem is in the ground as it is, so getting Arthur to rest and eat enough to gain weight back will be an almost impossible task.
A lot of TB patients also struggle neurologically after recovery, Arthur might be especially irritable or forgetful or have trouble concentrating, so bless Charles or whoever is helping to take care of Arthur during all this.
#the emotional burden that arthur feels like he is when he needs to be taken care of for once always makes me cry#the fear of taking up space and resources and not pulling his weight enough and the fear of never getting better#head in hands#hope this answers your question!!#rdr2#red dead redemption 2#arthur morgan#vaccine posting#arfur :(#red dead redemption 2 spoilers#tb talk

So this what "emaciated" and "cachexia" looks like?

Haters like Aeltri and C Beyers are fabricating a tale that BC is suffering from a severe loss of weight. They are trying to be clever and suggest that it's from some terrible, debilitating disease or that he is being tortured/poisoned.

This is complete nonsense. BC has always been a slim person. The only time he looked too thin was when he purposely lost a lot of weight for his role in The Courier. It was done under medical supervision and when it was over he regained the weight he lost.
But that truth doesn't play well with the Hater narrative. So they make up this elaborate story to weave into their lies about him.
It's almost like they have a bizarre form of Munchausen syndrome by proxy. They want him to be a victim sooooo bad they make up all sorts of tragic diseases for him to be suffering from. Then they can be his rescuer. They can save him from total destruction!
What a crock!
#haters#benedict cumberbatch#haters just canât stand to see bc happy!#haters are liars!#morons the lot of them#extreme denial syndrom

so I think I know when these two diverged. At least in my personal canon
Operator's name is Malik. He/him. I think Drifter kept whatever name they were born with, and it was probably a more feminine one. Don't know it yet and might not bother to decide it - after a billion spirals in Duviri they depersonalized to such an extent that they don't feel like they have a name anymore. They respond to Drifter, D, My Liege and Thrax interchangeably, but none are "their name", just a callsign.
TW for like⌠idk. Childhood trauma, warframe-brand kids enduring the horrors.
The setup, inevitably, was always going to come from Quincy fucking Isaacs.
the divergence was here
the other two choices for this event were 1. I watched my friends kill my parents, and 2. I killed my own parents
The divergence is this: Malik killed them himself. Drifter watched them die. Across days.
There was nothing left behind their eyes. They weren't the people they used to be anymore, their minds had been stolen away. And somewhere in their heart, the kid knew this. Malik could accept it. The other one could not.
So instead of making the choice, making the cut, they waited. It took many days for fatigue, famine and eventually cachexia to kill those who had once been their parents
thanks for that Isaacs. You dipshit
#warframe#warframe 1999#quincy isaacs#warframe drifter#duviri#gaming sauron#the interpretation that it was an experiment on the part of the indifference plays into the Drifter's personal take on it#that it is a part of Albrecht - a reflection of his worst nature#idk if the Drifter would kill Albrecht Entrati if given the chance but I know Malik would - and relish in it#âsquirm like the maggot you areâ#I need to specify these characters are thought of - by me - as inevitable consequences of their lives#Malik is the way he is because he grew up AS a Tenno. The warrior mentality and rejection of it is baked into his bones. His tiny tiny bone#whatever's baked into the Drifter is much more complicated and distasteful - their words not mine

Asher!! Asher is a version of Scotty from @boots-with-the-fur-club 's Mama Bear AU! Born as a human named Trevor Avery, he was diagnosed with cachexia at a little over a year old, though it's unknown how he got it. Despite several different doctors and many many tests, it was confirmed he did not have any diseases that usually lead to it in later stages. This made him a "medical marvel" to these doctors. Unfortunately, treatment wasn't working for him, and a little over three years old, the doctors gave him less than six months. His father made a deal with a few shady ex-EPF members. They get a test subject, there's a chance their experiments would save Trevor. After a fight with his wife, his father kidnapped him and took him to a facility outside of New York.
The experiments involved a genetically modified snow leopard cub whose blood proteins were showing healing capabilities. Their goal was to see how it would affect a terminally ill human, and Trevor was their new subject. After a few days of blood transfusions, a loose oozesquito got into Trevor's room and bit him, turning him into a little snow leopard cub. Confused and a bit scared, he escaped the facility. The mutation mixed with the snow leopard's altered blood cured his wasting disease, but ultimately took his memories as well.

thinking about this poem again today. id below the cut
[ID: a screenshot of the poem âcachexiaâ by max ritvo. it reads:
Today I woke up in my body
and wasnât that body anymore.
âŻItâs more like my dogâ
for the most part obedient,
warming to me
when I slip it goldfish or toast,
âŻbut it sheds.
Canât get past a simple sit,
stay, turn over. House-trained, but not entirely.
âŻThis doesnât mean itâs time to say goodbye.
âŻIâve realized the estrangement
is temporary, and for my own good:
âŻMy bodyâs work to break the world
into bricks and sticks
has turned inward.âŻ
As all the doors in the world
grow heavy
a big white bed is being put up in my heart.]
