Small Green Jasper Snuffbox with Diamonds
c. 1760
“This snuffbox is created with a single type of stone, jasper, that is enlivened with gold cagework and set with jewels. At the center of the lid, diamonds have been arranged in the shape of a cornucopia, or horn of plenty, a symbol of abundance.”

Cagework garde le grunge sous respirateur
youtube

Snuffbox
1775-1780 (made)
This box forms part of the group of snuffboxes associated with Frederick the Great of Prussia, who was a cultivated admirer of the arts. He maintained a lengthy, although sometimes heated, correspondence with the French philosopher Voltaire and was a gifted musician, composer and linguist. He had a passion for gold boxes, some of which he may have designed himself. He carried a box at all times; one is even said to have saved his life by deflecting a bullet during the battle of Kunersdorf in 1759.
Although the goldsmith who made the box is unknown, it is modelled on a design by Jean Guillaume George Krüger. Krüger was a London-born artist who was summoned to Berlin in 1753. Twenty designs for snuffboxes survive, all apparently made before the period around 1774 which he spent working in Paris.
Sir Arthur Gilbert and his wife Rosalinde formed one of the world's great decorative art collections, including silver, mosaics, enamelled portrait miniatures and gold boxes. Arthur Gilbert donated his extraordinary collection to Britain in 1996.
Cartouche-shaped snuffbox comprised of seventeen panels of bloodstone mounted in a cagework of gold and set with a profusion of diamonds, some of which are coloured yellow and others foiled. The cover is set with a vase, coloured to resemble porphyry, in which is set a bouquet of stylised flowers comprised of emeralds, rubies and diamonds, with smaller flowers. This is bordered by diamonds set in gold and sprigs of flowers. The walls of the box are divided into six reserves set with sprays of flowers. The base is encrusted in a similar fashion with a smaller bouquet of cut flowers.
Depth: 7.3cm
Width: 9.5cm
Height: 5.4cm
Weight: 360g

~ "Rectangular with curved edges, in the manner of a Japanese inro, the apricot-coloured agate body overlaid with a cagework of swirling iris leaves and flowers studded with diamonds, chased laurel border, rose-cut diamond thumb-piece, the base grooved for striking. (height 5.2cm., 2 in.). Peter Carl Fabergé was the creator of marvellous works epitomising creative genius and impeccable craftsmanship. The son of jeweller Gustav Fabergé, founder of the eponymous firm, Carl studied jewellery under his father’s guidance and, after further study in Frankfurt, Dresden and Florence, returned to St Petersburg to work at the Fabergé firm and eventually take over as manager at the young age of 24. Under his watchful eye, the careers of his workshop masters such as Henrik Wigström blossomed. In the 1880's, Fabergé began receiving commissions from Emperor Alexander III for jewels and objets d’art - everyday objects from vesta cases (used to store and light matches) to photo frames transformed into luxurious works of art. Fabergé, as jeweller to the Imperial Russian court, consequently gained international recognition and began furnishing the Danish, British and Thai monarchies with its masterpieces. Eventually, wealthy individuals also became prominent patrons and collectors - most notably the Nobel and Rothschild families. The firm expanded to Moscow, London, Kyiv and Odessa, and began looking further afield for sources of inspiration such as Japan and the Art Nouveau. What sets Fabergé apart from his contemporaries such as Cartier or Tiffany is unrivalled technical mastery and craftsmanship: each of Fabergé’s workmasters were highly specialised and the best in their field. Though his competitors tried to replicate Fabergé’s designs, they could not come close to the technical excellence and innovation of the House of Fabergé. After visits to Russia in 1904, 1905 and 1908, Cartier even produced a Russian-inspired range of hardstone and enamelled jewels and objects - including clocks based on this sale’s Fabergé nephrite and enamel example - with the help of Russian artisans." ~

ND Ladies: Shimizu Kasumi (Shadow at the Water’s Edge)
Many trees are blooming right now, which makes me think of the blossoms in the garden in SAW. It’s clear Kasumi enjoyed the beauty of this space, and you can represent that beauty in an outfit inspired by her story. Pair a lacy blouse with a kimono-style cardigan, a simple skirt, a hair bow, cagework sandals, and a satchel bag. Fan earrings, a sword necklace, bamboo bracelets, a cherry blossom ring, and an origami crane ring complete the look.

Cynosura
Lilybeth Silverthorn wasn’t always the wife of the ancient Kal’dorei sorcerer, Kalithil. She was once his student. Though she tried and tried, she often struggled to work the spells with the grace and control that was required. Her master saw it, and decided on a solution. Cynosura, The Focus. Crafted by his own hands to help her contain her raw power.    An excerpt from the story:    For tense moments, there was no sound or movement, then she heard a metallic tinkling sound. Without realizing, she had squeezed her eyes shut. She cracked them open to see something hanging before her. On a silver chain, a pendant hung a few inches in front of her eyes. Fine silver cagework enclosed a smooth, milky round gem. The silver-work was beautiful, but the gem at first seemed unimpressive. That is, until a shaft of light from one of her lanterns hit it, just so. When that beam of light struck, flecks and striations of green, blue, and violet lit up within the gem, transforming it. She sat utterly still, just staring at it, completely lost.    “Call it Cynosura,” came his resonate, slightly gravelly voice behind her, “It means The Focus.” You can read the full story here, as written by @forosuul, who owns Kalithil. http://silverthorn.house/lilybeth/focus-bandu/   I had the absolutely pleasure to design and paint the 'Cynosura' focusing pendant as a prize art from the Second Brigade Contest, awarded to @TindomielSilverthorn for 2nd place! The Brigade supply box which contained the prize looked like this -
https://sta.sh/02flat306v91    Painting this piece was a treat! And getting to depict a piece of Kalithil's sanctum was also a lot of fun. I hope you enjoy the final piece ! :)

Winter Fabergé Egg
The egg is about 15 cm tall on its stand, with a diameter of 10 cm. The outer shell is blue lapis lazuli, with architectural, Louis XV-style gold cagework in a design of leafy scrolls. The gold motifs cover each joint, making the egg look as if it was carved from a single block of lapis. The goldwork includes two Imperial double-headed eagles, as well as cupids, canopies, floral scrolls, flower baskets and garlands. Two large diamonds, one at top and one at bottom, are encrusted into the egg's surface, showing the initials of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, the year 1912 and the Imperial crown. The location of the original stand is unknown, however it is thought to have not made it out of Russia when purchased by antiques dealer Armand Hammer. The "surprise" inside is a Russian double-headed Imperial eagle with a miniature portrait of the Tsarevich Alexei, set in platinum and encrusted with diamonds.
25 March 1912 (O.S.) Presented to Empress Alexandra Feodorovna of Russia, a gift from Tsar Nicholas II of Russia at a cost 28,597 rubles.
