Buck is very much approaching the last wish Bobby left him with like it's a recipe he left him that he needs to master. He's doing assessments, he's following scripts, he's hiding his own grief because it's ugly. And that was fine for Hen, who has Karen. And likely for Chim who has Maddie. And Ravi who I am assuming has someone. Hell, we've seen Athena get support from Hen, Karen, and her kids. But for Eddie? Buck IS the someone. Bobby could have been too, but he's gone and Buck is a shell of what he usually is, pretty much a stand-in for the department therapist. And Buck has become an increasingly floundering version of his most intense self. If he focuses on getting the recipe right, he can maybe fix this. But that's flawed thinking because there is not right recipe for handling grief and to chase that perfection will always make you go crazy and will always build a wall between you and the very real people in your life. Eddie was right, he's spiraling and the way he thinks he should be able to help isn't actually helping at all because it puts the Real Buck further and further out of reach. Eddie doesn't need nor want a Frank-ified version of Buck. He wants the Buck who asked him what he was afraid of all those years ago. He wants the Buck who admitted that Chris wasn't the only one scared the night of Eddie's breakdown. He doesn't need Buck to assign him some number that says he's doing okay, he needs him to ask what it was like, if he actually is okay beyond what a test can tell you. He needs him to be honest and real and Buck about it. Buck is so focused on "getting it right" that he's not seeing that he's only making it worse. Eddie wants Buck's shitty protein cookies, he doesn't want some perfectly constructed beautiful cake that's mostly fondant. So, in a lot of ways, Eddie was completely justified in calling out Buck. Could he have been a bit nicer in delivery? sure. maybe, but that would have been 1.) boring and 2.) not really in line with how actual humans behave.

Long distance gestures - Nico Hischier
the swiss love charm au
NICO!HISCHIER X AINSLEY!HUGHES — WARNINGS: nothing just sweet pure content — SUMMARY: Nico arranges for a Vancouver bakery to deliver Valentine’s cake to Ainsley and Freya. Freya insists on calling Nico to thank him, and during the call, Ainsley feels the undeniable pull of his charm, even from thousands of miles away. — WORD COUNT: 2,7K PART OF THE SWISS LOVE CHARM AU
Ainsley isn’t a big fan of Valentine’s Day. It is just another day to her—one filled with pink-and-red displays at the grocery store and overpriced flowers. She has already decided to spend the evening watching cartoons with Freya and Quinn while ignoring the steady ping of romantic posts flooding her social media.
“Why is there even a holiday for this?” she mutters, balancing Freya on her hip as she shoves a stack of mail into the drawer by the door. “It’s all just an excuse to sell cheap chocolate and bad greeting cards.”
Quinn, whom is stretched out on their couch with a bag of chips resting on his chest, raises an eyebrow. “You’re just bitter because Freya’s the only one who’s ever gonna get you a Valentine.”
Freya’s head perks up at her uncle’s words. “Made Mommy a card! Hearts on it!”
“See?” Quinn says with a smirk, gesturing to his niece. “Freya’s got you covered.”
Ainsley rolls her eyes but kisses the top of Freya’s head with a tender smile. “Thanks, sweetheart. At least someone in this house loves me.”
Freya giggles and leans up to give her mom a huge sloppy kiss on the cheek. Before Quinn can make another smart comment, the doorbell rings.
Ainsley glances at Quinn, frowning. “Are you expecting anyone?”
“Nope,” Quinn says, shoving another chip into his mouth, his brows furrowed in confusion and concern.
Sighing, Ainsley shifts Freya onto her other hip and opens the door. A delivery man is standing there with a white box tied with a bright red ribbon.
“Ms. Hughes?” he asks, consulting the clipboard in his hand. His chest is lifting heavily probably from the amount of time he spent in the elevator to get to their floor.
“That’s me,” she says slowly.
“This is for you. Happy Valentine’s Day,” the man says before handing over the box and heading back to the elevator
Ainsley wants to shout at him but it is too late. The doors of the elevator are already closing after him. She shuts the door, staring down at the box in confusion.
“What is it?” Quinn asks, sitting up on the couch now, his curiosity clearly piqued.
“I have no idea,” Ainsley mutters, setting the box on the counter and waiting for Quinn to join them.
Freya is taken into Quinn’s arms, her little hands reaching eagerly for the ribbon. “Open it, Mommy?”
“Hold on,” Ainsley says, her fingers trembling slightly as she pulls the ribbon loose. Lifting the lid, she freezes. Inside is a heart-shaped cake, beautifully decorated with pink frosting. The words Happy Valentine’s Day, Ainsley, and Freya are written in elegant script across the top.
Quinn let out a low whistle, leaning over her shoulder. “Looks like someone’s got an admirer.”
Ainsley shoots him a sharp look, her cheeks heating. “It’s probably just…” She trails off, unable to come up with a reasonable explanation. Because actually, she has none.
“Maybe Jacky and Luke sent it?” she tries, but she knows if it were her younger brother’s they would do something crazier, and by the look Quinn gives her, she only confirms it.
Freya bounces on her uncle’s hip, pointing at the cake. “Can eat? Pleeease?”
Ainsley ignores her brother’s knowing smirk as she reaches for her phone, already suspecting who the sender might be instead of her brothers. She taps out a quick message.
Ainsley - Did you send us a cake?
Her phone buzzes almost immediately.
Nico - Maybe. Do you like it?
Quinn is peering over her shoulder now, reading the message with a grin. “Nico?” he asks, far too amused for her liking. Not that Quinn likes the idea of Nico sending his twin cake but he can’t say it isn’t a nice gesture.
“Shut up,” Ainsley mumbles, but her lips betray her with the tiniest hint of a smile.
Freya tugs on Ainsley’s sleeve, her eyes locked on the cake. “Can eat now, Mommy?”
“Hold on,” Ainsley says, shooting Quinn a warning look as he snickers. “Go wash your hands first, Freya.” Quinn carefully puts her down ruffling her hair.
Freya huffs but obeys, scurrying off to the bathroom. The moment she is out of earshot, Ainsley turns to Quinn. “Don’t start.”
“Oh, I’m starting.” Quinn leans back against the counter, arms crossed. “The guy’s in New Jersey, and he’s still out here sending Valentine’s cakes? That’s some dedication for someone you’ve only met twice.” Even though he’s making fun of it he’s not keen on this idea of Nico’s.
“It’s not like that,” Ainsley says quickly, though the warmth creeping up her neck betrays her. “He’s just… being nice.”
Quinn smirks. “Sure. Because it’s totally normal for a guy to ship a personalized cake to someone he’s just being nice to.”
Ainsley groans and turns her attention back to her phone. She taps out another message.
Ainsley - Freya is very excited, by the way. Ainsley - Thank you, you didn’t have to do that.
His response comes almost instantly.
Nico - I wanted to. She’s a great kid. Nico - And you deserve something nice today too.
Ainsley stares at the screen, her heart doing an annoying little flutter. She is so distracted that she doesn’t notice Freya returning, her hands still a bit damp from washing.
“Mommy, show Nico card now?” Freya asks, holding up the bright pink paper covered in glitter and heart stickers.
Quinn snorts. “This is gold.” But the thing does something to his heart. Seeing his niece being this comfortable around a guy she met only twice makes him a little uncomfortable.
Ainsley shoots him another glare. “Freya, honey, Nico’s in New Jersey. We can’t exactly hand-deliver your card.”
Freya’s face falls for a moment before she brightens up. “Show him on phone!”
Before Ainsley can argue, Freya climbs onto the chair next to her, holding the card up toward the phone camera. “Look, Mommy! Picture for Nico!”
Quinn, who is utterly useless, bursts into laughter. “You’re doomed.”
Ainsley sighs but can’t bring herself to say no to Freya’s excited smile. She snaps a picture of the card and sends it to Nico with a quick caption:
Ainsley - Freya insisted you see her Valentine’s masterpiece. Ainsley - Prepare for glitter.
Nico doesn’t waste any second and replies almost immediately.
Nico - Tell Freya it’s perfect Nico - And it made my day. Nico - But now I feel bad I didn’t give her a card either.
Freya, who is watching over her mommy’s shoulder, furrows her brows.
“He likes it, Mommy?” she asks, completely confused about all the words on the screen.
“Yeah baby he does,” she ruffles her hair with a soft smile. Seeing her daughter this happy makes her happy.
“He likes it! Uncle Quinn, you hear? Nico likes card!”
Quinn ruffles her hair with a grin. “I heard, kiddo. Looks like you’ve got a fan.”
Ainsley groans, burying her face in her hands. “You’re both impossible.”
But even as Quinn teases her and Freya bounces around the kitchen, Ainsley can’t help sneaking another glance at her phone.
Ainsley - Thanks again
She types, hesitating for a moment before adding, Ainsley - You didn’t just make Freya’s day. You made mine too.
The response is simple, but it makes her heart skip.
Nico - Good. That’s all I wanted.
It isn’t much, just a few words, but Nico can picture Ainsley reading them, maybe rolling her eyes, maybe smiling without meaning to. He doesn’t know her that well yet, but he knows enough to guess she probably isn’t used to someone making an effort for her.
Freya, though—Freya makes it easy.
His phone buzzes again, and when he glances at the screen, another picture of the glitter-covered Valentine’s card stares back at him. It is crooked, the stickers are placed haphazardly, and the words To Nico! are written in Freya’s wobbly, oversized letters.
He huffs out a quiet laugh. She made him a Valentine’s card. A fucking Valentine’s card.
And now he kind of wishes he had thought to make one too. Even though it is a childish thing.
Shaking his head, he runs a hand through his hair and opens his camera roll. He scrolls until he finds what he is looking for—a picture from last week, snapped on a whim. It is a shot of the Hudson River at sunset, the water painted in streaks of pink and orange, a few buildings silhouetting in the distance. He took it while he was walking home from dinner, not really thinking much of it at the time.
Now, though, it feels like the right thing to send.
Nico - Tell Freya I owe her a Valentine next year. Nico - But for now, this is for you both. Nico - Since you made my day too.
He attaches the photo and hits send.
It isn’t a cake, which they already have. It isn’t a stuffed animal or something Freya can hold in her tiny hands. But maybe, just maybe, it is enough to remind Ainsley that he is thinking about them—even from thousands of miles away.
His phone buzzes again a few seconds later.
Ainsley - Freya says, ‘Ooooh, so pretty!’ Ainsley - And thank you. It’s beautiful.
A slow warmth spreads through Nico’s chest. He doesn’t know exactly what he is doing, or where this is going, but he knows one thing for sure.
He isn’t just thinking about them today.
He thinks about them every damn day.
Quinn - You knew about Nico’s Valentine’s surprise?
Quinn doesn’t have to wait long for a response, considering in New Jersey, is nine pm and Jack is phone addicted.
Jacky boy – What surprise? Jacky boy – Luke doesn’t know too.
Quinn sighs at that and shakes his head. Jack is not as sly as he thinks he is. Of course, he knows about this and so does Luke.
Quinnifer – Jack Rowden Hughes, you knew! Quinnifer – You little piece of shit!! Quinnifer – Why the hell you did not tell me?
On the other side of America, Jack is lying on a couch with Luke, both laughing at their angry older brother. They had known for about two months now that Nico id planning something to surprise Ainsley, they even helped him.
They knew if they told Quinn, he would fly out of his skin. He is sometimes too overprotective of Ainsley. Not that Jack and Luke aren’t, hell they didn’t like the idea of Nico having a crush on her, but they know him, and they trust him.
And Nico knows he can’t fuck up. He is kind of scared of Quinn when it comes to Ainsley. He heard how he is when it comes to his twin sister.
Jack just shakes his head at the overprotectiveness and types out a quite long response.
Jack boy – Because you are acting like a fucking psycho when it comes to sis.
As soon as he sends it, his phone rings and his brother’s face pops on the screen. Jack groans annoyed which makes Luke look over at him. Luke's eyes roll back when they see Quinn’s face.
“Pick it. You know he won’t stop.”
“Hello there, my dear brother!” Jack says with a cheesy smile.
“What the hell?” Quinn whisper-yells, looking around himself to make sure Ainsley isn’t nearby. “I swear to Stanley Cup if you helped him-”
“Okay, Q. Shut it! We didn’t like the idea from the beginning, but hey, Nico isn’t like the asshole.” Luke says annoyed by his brother’s overprotectiveness.
“Yeah, I know. It was kinda nice of him. You should see Freya; she even made him a fucking card,” He shakes his head pinching the bridge of his nose. “But I don’t like the idea of some man being like this after he met her only two times.”
“That is really nice of her,” Jack says his heart melting over his favorite niece. Before he can say anything else his sister’s voice startles him.
“Quinn! Are you serious?” Ainsley’s head pops on the screen, her eyes full of disbelief. “You are way too overprotective. And you two, thank you for helping him. It was nice of him and you.”
“You are welcome, gorgeous.” Luke winks at her, a blush coating her cheeks.
“Anyway, I and Freya are going to call Nico to thank him. And you, young man,” she looks at Quinn with furrowed brows. “Stop it!” with that she angrily walks out of the room, leaving her three brothers alone.
Annoyed by Quinn’s overprotectiveness she walks inside her room, where is Freya impatiently waiting for her mom so they can finally call Nico.
“Mommy, call!” she shrieks and makes a grabby hand at her mom.
“Minute baby! Mommy has to change her clothes first,” she says while she stands in front of the wardrobe, thinking about what she should wear.
“Mommy!” Freya whines kicking her legs as she lays on her back.
“Okay! Mommy doesn’t need to change.”
She doesn’t even know why she thought about changing, it isn’t like she needs to look good in front of Nico.
As she sits down, Freya climbs on her lap, her tiny hands reaching for the phone she is holding in front of them.
“What do we say when Nico pics up baby?”
“Hello, Nico!” Freya giggles as she watches her mom click on Nico's contact and FaceTime him.
It takes a few seconds before Nico’s face pops on the screen and Freya giggles from excitement.
“Grizzly!” she shrieks, her face being the only thing Nico can see.
“Freya!” Ainsley gasps in disbelief, while Nico only laughs at the nickname. She takes the phone from her daughter’s hands and rests it against the pillow so both of them can be seen. She grabs Freya’s shirt when she almost falls face straight down on the bed and sits her on her lap. “We don’t say things like-”
“Hey, it’s okay,” Ainsley is interrupted by Nico’s laughter. “I kinda look like one.”
“You like card?” Freya asks, crawling from Ainsley’s lap closer to the phone, this time her nose and eyes taking over Nico’s screen.
“I love it,” he smiles when he hears the sweet giggles coming from her small mouth. “Freya, would you mind moving back a little bit so I can see your mommy?” he asks, grinning when Freya nods her head and moves back on Ainsley’s lap. Ainsley soothes the hair from her daughter’s face away, her cheeks turning a light shade of pink.
“You should see her face when I picked her up from preschool and she told me she has a surprise for you.” Ainsley giggles, her eyes not leaving Freya whose attention is now on her stuffed bunny.
“I can imagine that.”
“Anyway, thank you again for the cake. It was delicious, right Fre?” she nudges her shoulder to get her attention.
“Yes, yummy.” Even though she answers, her attention does not leave the bunny for a second.
“Well, I am glad you liked it. But the credits go to Jack and Luke.” He says shyly, scratching the back of his neck.
“Yeah, I know,” she giggles, sitting more comfortably. The conversation between her and Nico takes another hour or so before she excuses herself that she needs to batch Freya and feed her.
It is when she’s just sitting on the couch that Quinn comes to her with chocolate in his hand and a nervous smile on his lips.
“I am sorry sis. I know I was acting like an asshole, but you have to understa-” he rambles out, standing in front of her.
“I do Quinny. It’s just annoying how overprotective you are.” She sighs, snatching the chocolate from his hands. A giggle leaves her mouth when Quinn jumps on her, tickling her sides.
“Stop it!” she giggles, squirming under Quinn’s body. “Quinifer!”
“Okay, okay.” He says between laughs, rolling down from her.
“You know she called him a Grizzly?” she says after a while, her fingers playing with the hem of her shirt.
“Really?” he chuckles, pride swirling through his chest. “Well, he kind of looks like one.” Ainsley glares at him, but the playful smirk on his lips softens her and she smiles.
But he is handsome Grizzly.

April Showers Bring May Flowers
Summary: You pray for good weather on your beloved dragon's birthday. Will the heavens turn an ear on your well wishes? Dragon Hybrid! Sylus x Deer Hybrid! Reader Tags: Sylus x Reader, Hybrid AU, Fluff, Predator/Prey
Author's Notes: The series has ended but my beta reader said more HAHA (Also, because I love you guys and it's our man's birthday.)
────────────────────
Sylus knows you are not one for superstition but it amuses him to see you very much bothered by the sudden burst of rain showers as his birthday comes nearer.
“What is this place you have in mind that rain has became such a bad thing to you, sweetheart?”, he asked you once, an attempt masked as a question to fish out at least a hint from you but-
-You are quicker now to see through him and he only receives a mysterious smile as his answer (“Mr. Sylus is such a bad liar,” it seems to say) before you return to what you were doing.
“Usually, I don’t let people out of my sight if they don’t answer me properly, darling.”
He will murmur softly, playfully nipping your soft deer ear but he already did it too many times that gone are the inherent instinct of yours to shiver in response.
You will turn to him then, with the most adorable and cheekiest smile, “That’s good because that means we can spend more time together.”
Yet, you are pulling all of the stops to make sure it doesn’t rain on his birthday.
First, he spots you alone in the greenhouse behind his home (and now yours as well), pulling a petal from a flower one by one murmuring to yourself, “Will it rain? Will it not?”
(You don’t seem too pleased when the flower tells you that it will rain, letting out a huff before returning to your embroidery.)
Then, there is this matter with Luke and Kieran who also support your quest for “No Rain on Boss-man’s Birthday” as they called it who began hanging those little ghost puppets on every window of the base, a culture from another country that apparently helps call for sunshine.
(“A little rain isn't too bad," he mused near the twins once but it is as if the two had a script already prepared for this. “Don't want the cake delivery truck to get delayed, boss.” or “Can’t set off fireworks if it is raining, boss-man.”)
Lastly, he saw through Mephisto’s optics you making an offering to the small altar of your mother.
(It was the slice of premium strawberry shortcake he bought for you but your wish for no rain had supersede your sweet tooth and he heard you whisper to the photo of your mother if she can put in a good word for you and that ‘Sylus is a very nice dragon and he deserves clear skies on his special day.’)
Sylus finally received his answer when you shyly handed him an envelope of tickets to a wildlife park before his birthday.
Finally, it made sense.
Of course you wouldn’t want it to rain. Creatures take refuge after all during those times.
True enough, your efforts weren’t in vain because it was the warmest day of his life, the air was cool, and every animal you and him met along the way were in their element.
“Maybe it can balance another orange,” you thought out loud, both of you huddling near a capybara who already has an orange on top of its head.
The afternoon sun was at its peak and perhaps it was good fortune that you and Sylus won an umbrella from an animal quiz bee earlier (The weekend binges of Life on Earth has paid off!) because it provided shade for the both of you while you and him figure out how many oranges can your newfound friend can balance.
At least, that was the intent and maybe the answer to that question is reserved for another year when Sylus quickly picked you up with one arm, the colorful umbrella in his other hand.
“Sy-”
“Don’t want you to get all muddy now, sweetie.”
You were about to protest that it is clear out but the always playful and knowing grin he wears as he looks up to you says otherwise.
(What is the use of his senses as a predator hybrid if not to know that a downpour is imminent?)
Cue, the umbrella above your heads, then the April shower.
“I thought my mama put in a good word,” you pouted and you believe she did but maybe the heavens had everything mixed up today that yes, the skies are blue, the sun is out but the rain came in too and it must be a mistake since its attendance is required for another day.
“Well, sweetheart, maybe the mother of the fox bride also put a good word for her daughter as well.”
“Fox bride?”
“It is also a perfect day for a fox’s wedding.”
“Oh, so that’s why we won this umbrella,” you smiled in realization while he made his way to the nearest place where both of you can stay and wait for the rain to cease, “Like a birthday gift or an apology gift to you.”
“Or a wedding giveaway to us,” Sylus grinned, setting you down under the canopy of the tall branches of overarching bougainvilleas that shield you from the sudden bout of rain that shows no signs of stopping, the fox’s wedding still in full swing.
“Our umbrella did well. It’s my favorite now,” he mused, his eyes trained at how its hues wash over you.
It is a lovely umbrella, vibrant with each panel bearing the color of the rainbow and if one spins it, it will resemble a makeshift kaleidoscope.
“What if the moths got to it? Will it still be your favorite umbrella?”, you asked, tilting your head while you watch him spin it about, spreading water droplets casting small rainbows against the sunlight.
Even the brightest satin will become dull, wore away, and one day, when you and him are waiting for your final sunset, you will pull this umbrella from the rack on a bright summer morning only to see the moths have received word of a meal they shouldn’t miss and all that remains from their overnight feast will be the system of little metal rods that used to hold the satin together.
Will it still be favored by your dragon?
Sylus stooped down slightly, angling the umbrella down to cover your faces, droplets of water slipping past through the spaces between the leaves of the flowery canopy above you and into the fur of your adorable ears that are flicking them away unconsciously but his eyes lingered more on your little pout directed towards the rain.
Strawberry.
Orange slices.
Maple syrup.
You must be a unique deer indeed because of the many different flavors he tasted on your fingers and lips today.
“It will still be, sweetie,” he chuckled softly, his breath warm against your skin as his nose brushed against yours before he closed the distance once again to get one of his special birthday wishes from you, “Our umbrella will be perfect to count the stars above our heads by then.”
Today, it serves its purpose well and right now, who would have thought?
The April shower tastes as decadent too on your lips too.
.
.
.
.
.
For his birthday wish, may more flavors be in store for him when May arrives.

How2Draw Comics: Story
Last time we learned about conceptualizing our characters, settings, art style, etc. Now we actually have to put our characters in a situation, drive them from point A to point B through a story.
There are many different ways to do this. I'm assuming you have, if not an outlined story, a situation you want your character to experience. If you don't have a story, make your character order pizza but something happens and they have to rescue the pizza (and the delivery guy, I guess.) The first method I'll discuss is my least favorite- the Script Method.

You write a script for your story, listing pages and panels as you go along. I hate this. It feels too limiting, and panels are actually one of the most limiting and intimidating things to a beginner comic artist. Yet most tutorials encourage you to draw your panels first and then squish or stretch your drawings to fit, and that's what the Script Method is based off of. I draw my panels while I do my drawings, or even after I do them.
If pacing your comics is one of the most difficult things for you (what size do I make my panels? Is there too much dialogue on this page?) then I suggest the Storytelling Method.

You do not have to make a full short story or book. Usually I just say something like, "boy is making cake. girl walks up behind him and hugs him, kissing his floury cheek. she walks away, licking her finger. she has stolen some cake batter and he didn't notice." In my head I can see a more detailed story there, but you can tell a story without a bunch of flowery prose.
You may be wondering how this helps with pacing your comics. Well, I have actions associated with dialogue, meaning I know which drawings will have which dialogue, automatically creating a nice balance. Additionally, I know what to prioritize. I know that the panel introducing the manor will be large, because I used the words "large and imposing" to describe it. I know that when I set the ballroom scene in this story, I also need to set the scene in an establishing shot. And I know that I'm going to have Bernice's appearance on the food table be surprising, taking place after she tugs his shirt or something. (This will probably make more sense once I actually make the comic)
The final method is a very flexible one for those who aren't into words and just want to draw- the Children's Book Method.

This particular example is mind-mapping, but you can also do a more organized version by storyboarding (placing each drawing in a square and giving a short description for context). I call these collectively the Children's Book Method because the basic idea is that you don't repeat your drawings like you would in a comic. Instead, you draw those things that feel the most interesting and most dynamic, the things that are most important. (like keyframes in an animation) Children's books illustrate one scene at a time, providing context for many different moments in one picture (and some text). They are less sequential than a comic because they only have one picture per page.

I usually have a mix of the storytelling method and the storyboarding end of children's book method. And usually I tell myself a story only in my head, without writing it out, because that's all I need. And I'll admit, sometimes the stories play out in my head like a movie, which is probably why the script method works for people. Sometimes you don't know which is the most effective way to tell yourself a story until you try to draw the comic and see what is giving you the most trouble.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask me! I know I'm kind of rambly and don't make much sense, so if you need clarification or other tips, I'll do my best to help.
Next is Panels and Pacing: Drawing the Comic (which will probably happen in multiple posts, but this art block will make it nigh impossible for a while, why doesn't it just go away?)
#how2draw#how2draw comics#art tutorial#comic#mouse#art block is the worst!#it's kind of hard to describe how you do things#when you just do it in your head#i may make an example of how i actually use the children's book method to help me lay out my comic pages#you could call the children's book method the keyframe method if you want

365 Albums in 365 Days: 225/365
Date: Tuesday August 13th Album: Knives for Aries Artist: ROAR Released: 2024 Genre: Indie Rock Review: I was never quite able to get a handle on how to describe ROAR. Kitsch? Ironic? Tongue-in-cheek? All their songs border on the saccharine, not so much leaning on inspiration as they are setting up in its living room. The lyrics, blunt and miserable as they are, provide a twisted contrast to the bright instrumentals and sing-song delivery. It’s the auditory equivalent of announcing a death in the family on a birthday cake, the horrific reality clashing spectacularly with the cloying script. It’s fun, even if it does call to mind those Sanrio ventcore posts and a gore-splattered Lisa Frank coloring book. Favorite Track: Knives for Aries

Starfall: Chapter 16: Baker's Delight
Previous Chapter: Next Chapter:

“Star, honey. Could I borrow you today?” Regina looked up as she helped Lizzie get her shoes on for the day. “Unless you’ve got something planned?”
“I don’t. Is everything alright?” Star was just putting away the last of the breakfast dishes.
“It’s fine. I just need a little help at the bakery today, if you don’t mind.”
“Not at all.” Star agreed, quickly zipping herself into her most comfortable pair of boots and following Regina out to the car. Instead of her usual complaints about her carseat, Lizzie wanted to show Star how she could do it herself, and they got out of the garage faster than normal. Once they’d dropped Lizzie off, Regina took her to the bakery in town.
It was a cute little two story building, with a hand painted sign that said “Sugar Quill Cafe” in floral cursive script. Regina unlocked the door for them and led Star inside. The tables inside were all polished light wood, with soft yellow and blue upholstery on the chairs and matching curtains.
“Just take the chairs down off the tables for me and wipe the tabletops?” Regina asked sweetly.
Star nodded and got started, focusing on not scraping the chair legs on the floor to avoid making the Chaos-awful sound it would cause. When she finished, Regina had gone back into the kitchen in the back.
“Grab an apron and a handkerchief to put over your quills, honey. I’m gonna teach you how to make the blueberry muffins.”
Five minutes later, Star was standing on a chair zesting a lemon and watching Regina showing her where everything was in the kitchen. Star was a quick learner, and could follow any recipe without too much trouble. Soon, she was scooping muffin batter into trays and starting to measure everything for cinnamon rolls and coffee cake while Regina got the big mixers going.
“Pick something from the recipe book for today's special, will you?” Regina winked at her as she turned around to go to the back door and accept the day’s supply order from the delivery man.
Star was immensely confused, but quickly flipped through the books for something that wouldn’t be too similar to the other things already made. That was the purpose of variety, right? When Regina came back with a dolly stacked with cases of milk, cream, eggs, and sugar, Star pointed out a page from the book. “Would this be okay?”
“Coffee creme brulee? I haven’t made those in years.” Regina beamed. “Alright. Today, we’re breaking out the blow torch. Let me show you how to get the espresso machine and coffee urn going, since they’ll need to warm up. And the tea urn, while we’re at it.”
Star followed for a barista crash course before going back to the kitchen to learn how to make creme brulee. By the time the cafe opened, she could operate everything on the coffee bar and knew at least enough about the pastry case that she could get people whatever they were ordering. And when the first morning rush hit… she kind of liked it. There was a purpose to it, a task assigned with every order taken. She could handle small talk chatter in short bursts, a “good morning” and “thank you for coming” back and forth. Most of the customers smiled at her, and knew Regina by first name.
“Oh, Reg! You finally hired someone? That’s great that you’re getting some help.” One older rabbit woman said, taking her drink and a muffin from Star with a smile.
“Actually, Star’s just being a good sport and helping me out this morning. She’s one of my girls.” Regina smiled.
The rabbit, Mrs. Peony, smiled at Star. “That’s wonderful. Such a nice girl, exactly what I’d expect of one of Regina’s daughters.”
Star’s quills involuntarily bristled, but she hoped the handkerchief on her head kept it hidden. “Daughter” felt like an unfamiliar title. How could she be someone’s daughter? She’d never had parents before… the closest thing had been Gerald, and while she’d loved him there was always the knowledge he’d made her as an experiment that lingered in the background. Describing him as a grandparent felt a little more accurate, the distance of a generation filling the gap formed by laboratory equipment.
“Thank you, ma’am.” She decided it was enough of a reaction, and went back to steaming milk and her short, polite interactions with other customers. Customer service wasn’t hard, as long as she was left alone to do it and could ask Regina questions when she wasn’t sure.
Things slowed down midmorning as people got settled in for work, and they restocked and cleaned up. “You’re doing really well, Star.” Regina handed her a case of milk, surprised when she took it one handed. “You’re a natural.”
“You didn’t really need my help today, did you?” Star asked as she put the gallons into the fridges under the bartop. “Almost everyone already knew you by name.”
“Caught me.” Regina smiled. “I just wanted to spend time with you, but I didn’t think you’d agree unless I gave you a job to do.”
“You and Emory have an uncanny ability to read people.” Star shook her head.
“Emory mostly. I’m following her lead in some ways.” Regina started refilling the sugar containers. “But I am glad you’re here. I hate to think of you sitting home alone all day.”
“I… I don’t mind doing this. Baking is more pleasant than I thought. And you let me drink free coffee all morning.” Star cocked her head to the side. “Could I come help more often?”
“Of course. I was thinking maybe… Monday, Wednesday, and Friday you come open with me? At two, you can go and pick up Lizzie if you still don’t mind watching her after school, and we’ll all meet back home for dinner? Tuesday and Thursday, you can sleep in and weekends are all yours when both girls are off. Some Saturdays are Emory’s robotics competitions, so you’ll be free to go if you want to see them.”
“Don’t you want to see them? She’s your daughter.” Star raised an eyebrow.
Regina pointed at the TV mounted to the wall in the corner closest to the register. “Emory has that one set to sync to her phone. She live streams me the competitions, and I close the bakery so I can go see her at nationals if her team makes it. Which they have for the last eight years.”
Star nodded thoughtfully. “You’re very supportive.”
“A good mom should be.” Regina hesitated before asking. “Your mom wasn’t, was she?”
“I didn’t have a mother. Or father.” Star shook her head. “It was just my grandfather, with Maria, Shadow, and I.”
Regina didn’t pry. Between what she’d overheard from Star herself and what Emory had told her, she understood enough about those names. “Well, sweetheart… if you ever find yourself wanting a mom, I’m right here.”
Star looked up at her, that same look Regina saw every time Emory reached out a hand for her or Lizzie climbed into her lap back on her face. A look that said she wanted to trust, but was afraid. “You… don’t have to say that. I’m not like your daughters, I know it. They’re good, because you took good care of them…” Her teeth clicked when she shut her mouth hard, not wanting to say what they both knew. That Star was damaged, her cracks extra noticeable next to Lizzie’s innocence and the brilliant light coming off of Emory. That she couldn’t believe, compared to them, that she belonged.
Regina reached out, flour-coated hands settling on each of Star’s cheeks. The girl’s big blue eyes locked into hers, startled by the affectionate touch. “I’m not saying it because I have to. I’m telling you that I’m going to be your mama now, because you deserve one. No, it’s not a burden to me. No, you’re not too hard to love. And don’t you ever feel like you can’t tell me that you need something, no matter what it is.” When Star’s eyes watered up, Regina wiped the tears off her face with a thumb.
She was startled when Star pushed her hands from her face, but it gave way to a warm delight when the girl surged forward and wrapped her arms around Regina’s waist, burying her face in her apron. Regina stroked her quills, smiling as Star scrubbed her face against her shoulder.
And Star didn’t have to say a word. This was exactly what she’d needed. After a lifetime of feeling like any love was unrepeatably unique by virtue of Maria’s goodness, Gerald’s obligation to a life he’d created, and Shadow’s understanding as another Ultimate Lifeform… to have it so freely given by not one but three people felt like pure hope. Maybe the future wouldn’t be impossibly bleak, even if Shadow didn’t come back for her.

“You need to sleep.” Rouge practically scruffed Shadow as he was getting off his motorcycle under the car port of his house. “You’ve been riding around for three months straight. You’re going to bed.”
“Let go.” His wiggles were halfhearted at best. She was right, he’d been looking for Star since she’d disappeared, and it was wearing on him. If he hadn’t forced himself to at least catch a nap every once in a while, he’d have been as delirious as she was when she’d tried to fight him. “She’s still out there.”
“She’s not any more lost than she was this morning, and she won’t be any more lost tomorrow than she is right now.” The bat dragged him to the front door. “Besides, she’s like you right? An Ultimate Lifeform?”
“Yes.” He sighed, poked up the front steps until he unlocked the door. “But she doesn’t know anyone on Earth.”
“Neither did you when you got here, and you made friends. Prickly as you are.” Rouge poked him over to his kitchen table. “When was the last time you ate?”
“... I think I had a cup of coffee yesterday. It might have been this morning.” He leaned on his elbows, deflating slightly.
“Figured. I already ordered takeout, it’ll be here in ten minutes.” She sat down beside him.
“It’s been months. What if she’s back in trouble with GUN?” He grumbled.
“I’ve checked. She hasn’t been located, and if she’s spotted she’s not wanted for arrest. Abe Tower let her out of custody himself.”
Shadow huffed. “I wonder if he did it in hopes she’d kill me.”
“Probably. We both know he hates you.” She patted his back. “But he’s honest about it, and he wouldn’t lie if she was in custody.”
Rouge was probably Shadow’s closest friend, besides his weird pseudo-rivalry\ deep understanding with Sonic. She was like a much bossier older sister than Maria had ever been, but he kept deferring to her for no reason he could explain. She was just… she’d given him her trust and a degree of normalcy he desperately needed after what had happened on the ARK and the aftermath of the Eclipse Cannon fiasco. So her reassurance took the rest of the fight out of him, and he put his head down on his arms. “I miss her.” He admitted quietly. “I’ve missed her since I woke up, but knowing she’s alive… I hate it. I can’t focus on a damn thing but finding her.”
“I know.” Rouge softened slightly. “But if she cares about you half as much as I think she does, she’s not going to want you to run yourself into the ground looking for her. You gotta take care of yourself or what’s left for her to come back to?.”
He mumbled halfheartedly into his arms. “You have a point… maybe I can try another angle. That robot she went back for… you think Tails could trace it?”
She glanced at her phone. “I think I’m going to grab the food, and you’re going to eat before I answer that.”
“Ugh. Fine.”
She dipped out of the kitchen for a moment and came back with a bag of Chinese, and he hadn’t realized how hungry he actually was until he smelled it. She slid him a box of noodles and a set of chopsticks, chuckling as he tried not to inhale the first real meal he’d had in a couple days. Once he’d finished half of it, she deemed it safe to talk without completely distracting him. “The robot’s going to be a no-go. I already found the little guy. He’s renamed himself from Eggdoc to just Doc, and he washed up on shore the same night she went missing. He’s leading a little group of defected Eggman robots who are calling themselves “Starniks”. Apparently she was really nice to them, so they’re hitting Eggman’s bases and recruiting over robots he had powered down. They combed the beach for her, but she’d either already made it into Crystal Keyhole or she hadn’t washed up by morning. If she turns up, Doc’s promised to make contact.”
Shadow groaned around a mouth full. “Dat’s not hepfuwl.”
Rouge bit back a giggle, knowing how important this was to him. “I know, I know. But I got an idea. I sold a little of my jewel collection to a high-price buyer for some quick cash, and went down to Chaotix Detective Agency this afternoon.”
Shadow almost choked on his food, and Rouge slid him a glass of water before he could sputter half his bite across the table. “You sold jewels for this?”
“Yeah.” She shrugged, but there was none of her usual smugness in her eyes. “I know what this means to you.”
Shadow knew what her collection of stolen jewels meant to her, and could only nod with wide eyes. “I… thank you.”
“You’re welcome. Consider it my thanks for her saving my life in Tibet.” She winked, her smirk returning. “I want a snowboarding rematch, though.”
“I’ll ask her about it.” Shadow smiled faintly. “But I’m sure she won’t mind.”
“Good. If she does, we’ll just tell her I’m the one making sure her boyfriend eats dinner and goes to sleep for more than two hours at a time. I gave Chaotix a picture of her, so you can rest easy and wait for a call.”
“You have a picture of Star?” Shadow raised an eyebrow. “I don’t even have a picture of her.”
Rouge grinned and reached into her pocket, pulling out an envelope. “Got these from GUN evidence. Abe went digging after he found out about Star, but it took him a while to find them. They were buried under an obscene amount of security clearance and coverup, just like she was when she was in custody. Everything to do with the ARK is like that, he’s having to manually declassify things he didn’t even know existed.”
“Don’t present it like I’m supposed to feel sorry for him.” He tried to take the envelope, but she held it out of his reach.
“Finish eating first, then you can have it.” She grinned.
“Fine, fine.” He sent back to shovelling noodles in his mouth, eyes locked on the envelope. It was thick enough to hold at least a stack of polaroids, and he wondered if they were all lab documentation that failed to capture any of the life in Star’s blue eyes.
He’d finished the carton while lost in thought, and Rouge was good on her word and handed the envelope to him. He cleared a spot on the table, careful to make sure nothing would stain the photos, and opened the envelope. “... Maria took these.” He whispered, taking them out one at a time. He still remembered the white heavy plastic shell of her camera, studded with pink and blue stickers, and the blinding flash accompanied by a giggle whenever she took a picture. Sometimes she’d even got Gerald to take ones of all three of them together.
Rouge watched as he carefully laid them out, snapshots of his life with his family before he’d lost them. Him as a kid, looking up with big round eyes with an even smaller and wider eyed baby Star leaning against his side. Maria with a hedgehog on either side, buried in blankets with a TV scrolling credits in the background when they’d all fallen asleep during a movie. The three of them and a child Abe Tower, sitting in desks doing classwork with an eager smile on Star and Maria’s face, bemusement on Shadow’s, and Abe with his grumpy little arms crossed. Star walking on the railing over the observation deck, arms outstretched and balanced on one foot like a ballerina. Maria teaching Shadow how to dance, which he’d recalled feeling stupid doing but laughed along anyway. The three of them laying on the observation deck, looking up at the stars. There were at least thirty, taken over the course of the few years he’d lived on the ARK, little innocent glimpses into a happier time for them all.
The last one he didn’t remember being taken. It was himself, brow furrowed with thought as he looked out the window. Maria had apparently gotten behind him, getting his face in the reflection and his back facing her. Star was standing beside him, hands folded behind her back, but instead of looking where he was facing she was looking at him. Even in the faded colors of a fifty year old polaroid, he knew that look on her face. The same one he’d buried in her quills every time he’d hugged her for the last two years they’d lived together on the ARK, knowing how much he adored and waiting for the perfect moment to tell her so.
Rouge put a hand on his shoulder. “We’ll find her.” She set a picture next to the ones he’d laid out, the original she’d let Chaotix copy for their search. It was Star by herself, facing the camera with a brilliant smile and a pair of brand new thruster boots. The stark difference of her carefree grin and the intense stare they’d both seen on the airship was almost chilling.
“Yeah… We’ll find her.” He murmured with a conviction he hadn’t felt in a long time. Star was out there, and he wasn’t alone in looking. They’d find her.

Headcanons and other things I like to keep consistent in any interpretations, AUs or otherwise of the ZX/A crew, just for fun:
• For all intents and purposes, Girouette IS Vent and Aile's dad, adoptive or otherwise, no ifs, ands, or buts.
• Girouette is both a master baker and a total prankster.
• Girouette Express actually started out as a cake delivery business, which Giro inherited from his own adoptive father that named it in his honour.
• Vent and Aile are twins. Neither is sure who the oldest actually is, but it's Vent.
• Vent's favourite food is barbeque pork buns, which I took from the manga.
• Aile takes her coffee black but will also indulge in hot chocolate every so often. We're talking very, VERY fancy hot choc.
• Vent is a bonafide fashion disaster when he's not in uniform, and Aile prefers to dress androgynous. The two will often share accessories and jackets. Aile buys hers several sizes too big A: for aesthetic, B: so her tank of a twin can borrow them.
• Sho from the manga inevitably ends up running Girouette Express when the twins are indisposed.
• The source material never actually states that PnP are twins (and believe me I've scoured the ZX/A scripts), but I always treat them as such, with Prometheus as the older twin.
• Prometheus will always, without fail, end up in a death-related job no matter what universe I write him in. This is inspired by his status in canon proper as the Grim Reaper.
• Pandora is naturally glamourous but always puts effort into her appearance. Prometheus is vain as a peacock and unfortunately is NOT naturally glamourous at all.
• Pandora is weirdly perceptive of everyone's emotions but her own. Prometheus sucks at social interactions but doesn't come across that way due to immense vanity and overconfidence.
• Pandora is usually the first of the twins to spike her drinks with some sort of alcohol. Prometheus, bizarrely enough, recognises this to be an unhealthy coping mechanism more than she does and doesn't drink as often. His preference is chilli hot chocolate, she likes matcha lattes.
• Aeolus has some experience in working as a lawyer, no matter what universe I write him in.
• Aeolus is classically trained in ballet and has dabbled in both kendo and iajitsu.
• Aeolus is albino and partially blind.
• Siarnaq is fluent in sign language. Aeolus and Pandora are the only other two Megamen able to have a full conversation with him in it as they are also fluent. The rest are still learing.
• Siarnaq is a terrible, awful cook who will burn his RICE without fail. Bizarrely enough however the only thing he is ANY good at preparing is pufferfish.
• Thetis grew up around religious influences which partly influenced his whole "cleanse the world" pholisophy, and also has a criminal record from being involved in graffiting and protests.
• Thetis loves tacky formalwear and anything with fish on it. I can see an older Thetis wearing fish-patterned ties.
• Atlas is the best cook out of the Big Four as she actually uses spices. Oftentimes, TOO many spices for their tastes, barring Siarnaq. Her spiciness tolerance is very high.
• Partly taken from what I've seen of the ZXA manga, but Grey LOVES his sweets and trying new foods. Ashe has not helped in this as what she drinks can barely even be considered coffee given the amount of syrups she puts in it.
• Ashe is a FANTASTIC dancer. Vent dances like a dad at a disco. Both are inevitably the first to join in if something like the Macarena or Nutbush are played. (Great, now I want to animate them doing the Nutbush.)
Any other headcanons I give away will spoil some very minor plot points of FTGFTF, but spoil them nonetheless, haha.
Feel free to reblog and add what you like to keep consistent about these characters!! Curious to see how interpretations differ :)

Desert Dreams: Crafting Exquisite Cakes with Saudi Arabian Flair
Cake decorating is an art form that transcends cultures, yet finds unique expression in each corner of the world. Today, we’re embarking on a journey to explore the vibrant and rich culture of Saudi Arabia and discover how to incorporate its iconic elements into stunning cake designs. Whether you're a seasoned baker or a curious beginner, this blog post will provide you with inspiration and practical tips to create cakes that are not only delicious but also culturally resonant. Get ready to transform ordinary cakes into edible masterpieces that celebrate Saudi Arabian heritage. We will explore the best designs, colors, patterns and elements that you can easily incorporate.
Saudi Arabia, a land of stunning landscapes, intricate artistry, and profound traditions, offers a wealth of inspiration for cake decorators. From the sweeping dunes of the desert to the ornate architecture of its mosques, there's a myriad of visual cues that can translate beautifully onto a cake. Think about incorporating the warm hues of the desert – terracotta, sand, and gold – into your color palette. Intricate geometric patterns found in Islamic art and architecture can be recreated using stencils or freehand piping. The beauty of the Arabic script, with its elegant curves, can also be used to add a personalized touch. You can Send Cake To Saudi Arabia that are decorated in this manner for any occasion to add an extra element of thoughtful design and love.
When it comes to decorating techniques, fondant is a versatile medium that lends itself well to creating intricate designs. You can use fondant to create shapes inspired by traditional Saudi patterns, such as arabesque designs or geometric motifs. Edible gold leaf can be used to add a touch of opulence, reminiscent of the gilded details found in many Saudi palaces and mosques. Another technique you can try is using edible paints to create watercolor effects, or a gradient of colors on a fondant background. Remember that the key is to incorporate cultural elements in a way that’s both authentic and aesthetically pleasing. Also, think about using natural ingredients like dates, saffron, or rose water to add an authentic Saudi Arabian flavor. If you are looking for inspiration, you can always Order Cakes Online for Delivery Saudi Arabia and explore existing designs that you can build upon.
Piping techniques also offer a way to bring cultural elements to life on your cake. Intricate floral patterns inspired by Saudi carpets and textiles can be recreated using various piping tips. You can use different colors of buttercream or royal icing to create dimension and texture. Consider adding delicate dots or lines that emulate the beadwork and embroidery often found in traditional Saudi clothing. The goal is to create a design that’s both visually appealing and subtly reflective of Saudi artistry. Experiment with different piping tips and techniques to achieve the desired effect. For some additional ease and convenience, you can look into Order Cake Online Saudi Arabia to get some ideas and see what appeals to you.
Beyond visual elements, consider incorporating edible elements that represent Saudi cuisine. Dates, a staple in Saudi Arabia, can be used in various ways – as a filling, as a garnish, or even incorporated into the cake batter itself. Saffron, another popular ingredient, can be used to add a vibrant color and a unique flavor to the cake. Rosewater, a fragrant ingredient, can be incorporated into the frosting or the cake itself for a subtle aromatic touch. These authentic ingredients will not only enhance the taste of the cake, but they will also further highlight its Saudi Arabian inspiration. Additionally, you may guarantee prompt delivery, ensuring that your lovely cake will reach in time for your important event.
The following particular cake decorating concepts are influenced by Saudi culture:
The Desert Oasis Cake: This cake would feature a sandy-colored base made with buttercream or fondant, decorated with edible "dunes" created using textured frosting or crumbled cookies. You can also add edible cacti or palm trees made from fondant.
The Geometric Marvel Cake: This cake would showcase intricate geometric patterns inspired by Islamic art and architecture. Use stencils or freehand piping with royal icing or edible paints to create your desired pattern.
The Arabic Calligraphy Cake: Personalize the cake by adding a message or a name written in elegant Arabic calligraphy using edible ink.

IT HAD BEEN QUITE AN AFFAIR to track down the right address - for one, Gale hasn't entirely got the knack of utilizing the little tablet he'd been given upon his arrival - but this matter was too urgent to simply be left alone. They're all going to be trapped in this city together for quite some time, so far as he can gather. Best not to let any resentment begin to foster, not this early into their venture.
( Still, he hopes this will be a one-time affair. He'd told Astarion in no short terms that next time he would let the city go and form a mob, if that's what he wanted. )
The polite smile Gale puts on as he knocks on the door edges dangerously close to a grimace. "Hello. No need to mind me, just playing delivery boy." He holds out a box to her; through the transparent lid one can see the elegant script that adorns the top of the small cake. SORRY ABOUT THE BIRD.
"An apology. A very sincere one, or so I've been assured."
#wshingwells#wshingwells — 01#|| IC.#one day prior to this he was grabbing astarion by the ear like ffs this is your only strike if you cant act civilized ur on your own

Building a Logical Flow: Information Architecture for Engaging Blog Posts

We bloggers pour our hearts into crafting compelling content, meticulously researching topics, and sharing our unique perspectives. But what about the unseen forces that shape how readers experience our work? Enter the unsung heroes of blogging: typography, information architecture, and title tags. While often overlooked, these elements play a crucial role in transforming our content from a collection of words into an engaging and impactful blog.
1. The Art of Speaking Volumes: Typography’s Silent Power
Imagine a captivating story whispered in a monotone. While the content itself might be interesting, the delivery falls flat. Typography, similar to vocal inflection, adds depth and meaning to your written content. The right font choice can:
Set the Tone: A playful script can create a lighthearted atmosphere, while a bold serif conveys authority.
Enhance Readability: Easy-to-read fonts with appropriate size and spacing prevent reader fatigue.
Guide the Reader’s Eye: Using different font styles for headings, subheadings, and body text creates a visual hierarchy that guides readers through your content.
2. Building a Mental Map: Information Architecture for Clarity
Information architecture (IA) is the architect within you, meticulously designing the layout of your blog to optimize user experience. Strong IA ensures a smooth reading journey by:
Creating a Clear Navigation: A well-organized menu with logical categories and subcategories allows readers to easily find the information they seek.
Structuring Content Logically: Imagine a recipe instructing you to frost a cake before mixing the batter. A logical flow within blog posts keeps readers engaged and prevents confusion.
Internal Linking: Connecting related posts within your blog keeps readers engaged, allows them to explore further, and improves SEO.

Title tags are the first impression your blog posts make on search engines and readers alike. They’re like the catchy headlines of a newspaper that entice you to delve deeper. A compelling title tag should:
Be Keyword-Rich: Include relevant keywords that people might search for, but avoid keyword stuffing that sounds unnatural.
Offer Clarity: Clearly reflect the content of your post, accurately setting reader expectations.
Spark Curiosity: Intrigue readers with a hint of what they will learn, prompting them to click and discover more.
The Synergy of Success
These unsung heroes, when working together, weave magic on your blog. Typography draws readers in, IA guides them through your content, and title tags act as the initial pull. When all three elements work in harmony, your blog becomes a well-designed space that fosters engagement, clarity, and ultimately, a loyal readership. So, the next time you sit down to create a blog post, don’t just focus on the content itself. Remember the power of typography, information architecture, and title tags. By wielding these unsung heroes strategically, you can transform your blog into a powerhouse of reader engagement and success.

A Very Bad Good Girl x Rewind
Cinema is said to be a reflection of one's nation and its people. I say, any decent film is also a Mirror of Erised that's either too crass or too classy.
One of the reasons why I took up communication research is to deepen my roots on how frameworks are engineered and optimized to fit my current stance. It's not about the shiny badge of UPDi, it's just me being perpetually curious.
One of the things I did over the long holiday break is to randomly check content as I've been too out of touch. Of course, I'd definitely choose Ooku: The Inner Chambers over A Very Good Girl, however, I'd need to immerse myself in local mainstream films, because, one of my very few GCs is poppin' rainbows about an upcoming debrief. Kidding aside, it's my attempt to immerse in the perspective of my "audience of one" when it comes to work. Yes, work. More so, films are very easy access passes to what the pulse of the nation is, even when I'd have to yawn and laugh dryly so many times while at it.
In line with new stories for 2024, let me share my thoughts and feelings about A Very Good Girl. Alert: Spoilers incoming; however, I'd list down the stuff I gathered instead of lambasting and praising it straight up.
1 The male gaze is currently severely butchered but it's still a butch or femme butch scene, after all. Sorry, not sorry. I'd like to see an unapologetic ultra femme era of films in my lifetime, to be honest.
2 Women in films are on their way to find their safe space without sacrificing a safe space for all. Being immersed in feminism and postmodernism, the truth is that you can't advocate for safe space if you aim to silence the males in any social setting. As a reformed radical feminist, I'm still learning this ground. It's not easy, but it's for the greater good.
3 This film talks about how this country is still ruled by familial ties and feudalism.
4 Production and tiny details make or break the story even when your audience of one is but a passerby or a stranger.
5 While the film tackles the power struggle of females, the subtext I'm getting is that it's a class act involving the Philippines and her people. LOL. Money, fame and power are means to make you appear convenient; but, in reality, everything has a floor and a ceiling you can't escape nor evade. The poor and middle class clamor for these three pillars, however, it's all about being good even when you and the rest of universe make really, really bad choices each time.
Side Note: Sana lang, 'wag masyadong antagonized ang rich and poor masyado. 'Di naman kasalanan ng mahirap na mahirap sila in the same manner na 'di naman kasalanan ng mayaman na mayaman sila, right? And I think that this film has made a decent commentary about this topic.
6 As the media is silenced, harassed and policed with literal and figurative machineries, films are more experimental and more vibrant and dull, all together.
7 Scripts and deliveries do not exactly co-exist; but, I'd like to believe that we're probably off to better heights.
8 The agenda setting and unmuting the muted groups may be lost in translation because the dresses and the accessories seem to take the center stage. I know this is an attempt to put forward a more presentable cake to be eaten by the dogs and the underdogs, however, there should always be context so that the audience masticates is better.
9 Research as Paulo Coelho shares in one of his books is super duper integral to any literary work. I also believe that this is what's lacking in most films in the Philippines. 10 After the credits roll, what matters most is the lesson that the audience of one accepts or rejects. Period. Now, the question is: How deep did the film really go?
11 Not all women are meant to be mothers. But any woman can be a mother, so as long as there is a child who's willing or unwilling to be mothered.
12 Being a child is not bound by age, folio or social class. Being a child may be an adult's most "adulting" thing to down.
13 At times, women take too much heat in any kitchen. Asking for help especially when she can't cook is the cross in which women crucify themselves. This bit hits home a little too much, but hey, that's the truth, the hard pill I am downing, currently.
14 This film seems to be an attempt to shed light on dramatic and tragic-comedic existentialism. OPAK. Ako lang naman 'to since bias ko 'yan e.
Is there such a thing as a signature Filipino film style? This is something that I've been searching for since my biases are European or Japanese films. It's actually tough to answer a yes, but saying no seems tougher. There are a good number of films like Sakada, Serbis, Cuchera, Ekstra, Pamilya Ordinaryo, Nerseri, Posas, Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros, Engkwentro, Moral, Anak, That Thing Called Tadhana and Muli that have a strong sense of what the Filipinos are made of. In the same manner, these films seem to remind me of foreign films at some level. I try my best not to compare, however, I guess that I'd have to be more forgiving in my next viewings.
More so, regional films are yet to be highlighted as I know so well that our culture beyond Manila is so rich, pure and worth the budget. As one of Anthony Bourdain's visits to PH says it, we are not even regional; we're archipelagic. I'd like to witness a Philippine cinema scene where there's a vibe of pride about the mundane. I'd like to move beyond fake resiliency, sex sells, more sex sells more even when the lighting and editing is really trashy. I'm hoping to see our own theater arts mold our film dreams, hopes, and fears.
---
I'd also like to share that dad watched Rewind and shared the whole story with me this morning. I told him that before he starts, I am on the verge of telling him to skip it the movie and his sharing, because it's gonna be a blood bath; however, this is me, letting him be.
Of course, he didn't bother checking the trailer and the reviews. And so, he gave a blow by blow account of this movie's story. In between bashing and laughing with him, he told me that he's been a very bad dad, all this time. He even enumerated the missed attendances because he was "too busy" with work that's actually manageable. He further confessed that he could have been more present in our lives when we were growing up instead of growling like a beast even at our slightest hiccups. He shared that he'd be more than willing to go back in time to make bawi for his misgivings. I flatly told him that he's not giving... giving up, now and until his forever ends, eventually.
It felt as though he's on his Walk of Shame era with a dog cone and butt naked as he goes around the UPDi Ikot and Toki route. But, I tried my best not to get too bored and tuned in. His sharing lasted for almost 45 minutes, I think.
I chuckled and told him several times that it's his first time to be a dad, a parent; so, naturally, things are always on beta test mode. He told me that if he could rewind our past, he could have chosen to give up his dear life for mom to live longer. He meant what he said. This broke my hypothalamus in the same manner that it gave me a piece of peace that I'm aiming at.
I joked him: Dad, 'di ka naman magso-sorry 'di ba? He said: Alam mo naman tatay mo, iiyak, pero 'di magso-sorry. Me: Sus. OK.
I breathed deeply and told him that everything happens for a reason and that I'd like him to be with me for a long while, perhaps, longer than my original ask. I'd like him to let go of the past and should we talk about the good, the bad, the pretty and the ugly, may those be parts of healthy kwentuhans and batuhans. I'm also sure that this is no longer about mother dragon's smirk alone. This time around, it's about me and him and my brother making it together and emerging better.
Ah, January 3, you're something weird, wonky and wonderful! Perhaps, one of the things I'd see in the Mirror of Erised is dad and I biking around Japan for two straight weeks. LOL. Huy, tigil mo na 'yan, back to regular programming ka na in a few hours. Let's go!

Secrets of the Sound Booth: 5 Tips to Achieve Professional-Quality Voice Over Recordings

If you’ve ever wondered how to make your voice-over recordings sound totally pro, you’ve come to the right place. This blog post is all about the “Secrets of the Sound Booth” and we’ve got five killer insider tips that will level up your voice over recordings game.
Now, you might be wondering, why are high-quality voice-over recordings so important? Well, my friend, the answer is simple: they can make or break your project. Whether you’re narrating an audiobook, creating a commercial, or breathing life into animated characters, the quality of your voice-over performance can leave a lasting impression on your audience.
Imagine listening to a voice-over that sounds muffled, lacks energy, or is plagued by background noise. It’s like trying to enjoy your favorite movie with a scratchy, distorted soundtrack — pretty frustrating, right? On the other hand, when you hear a professional-quality voice-over, it’s like a symphony of perfectly timed notes that effortlessly convey emotions and engage your senses.
That’s exactly what we’re here to help you achieve. Our goal is to equip you with the knowledge, techniques, and insider tips that will transform your voice-over recordings into masterpieces. In the next sections, we’ll explore five essential tips that will revolutionize the way you approach voice over recordings.
So, let’s jump right into the first tip and discover how finding your unique voice can set you apart in the competitive world of voice overs.
Tip 1: Find Your Unique Voice
Alright, my aspiring voice-over maestros, it’s time to dig deep and find that voice that sets you apart from the crowd. Just like a fingerprint, your voice is unique, and it’s what will make you stand out in the sea of talent.
Embrace Your Vocal Quirks
First things first, forget about trying to imitate someone else’s voice. Your voice is like a fingerprint, remember? So, embrace those quirks and imperfections that make it distinctively yours. Maybe you have a velvety smooth tone, a captivating raspiness, or a knack for delivering humorous lines with perfect timing. Whatever it may be, celebrate your vocal uniqueness and let it shine through in your voice recordings.
Explore Your Vocal Range
Now, let’s talk about vocal range. Just like a versatile actor, a voice-over artist should be able to adapt to various roles and moods. Take some time to explore the different tones and pitches your voice can reach. Can you effortlessly switch between a warm, comforting voice for narrations and a vibrant, energetic voice for commercials? Experiment with different vocal styles and see where your range takes you.
Develop Your Style
Ah, style, the icing on the cake that makes your voice memorable. Think about the kind of projects you want to specialize in. Are you drawn to narrations that evoke emotions and transport listeners to faraway lands? Or do you have a knack for injecting enthusiasm and energy into commercials that make products fly off the shelves? Find your niche and develop your unique style within it. Remember, versatility is key, but having a signature touch can make you truly unforgettable.
To hone your skills, try recording yourself reading different scripts, experimenting with various emotions, tones, and delivery styles. Play with inflections, pacing, and even accents if you’re up for the challenge. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes — this is your laboratory for growth and improvement.
Tip 2: Master the Art of Script Interpretation
Now that you’ve found your unique voice, it’s time to explore into the art of script interpretation. Think of yourself as a storyteller, breathing life into words and immersing your listeners in narratives.
Understand the Message and Target Audience
Before you begin recording, take the time to truly understand the script’s message and the audience it aims to engage. Is it a heartfelt testimonial that requires sincerity and empathy? Or perhaps a lively commercial that needs a burst of energy and excitement? By grasping the intended tone and purpose of the script, you’ll be able to tailor your delivery to match the needs of the project.
Break Down the Script
Next, it’s time to break down the script into smaller, digestible parts. Highlight key phrases, emotional cues, and any specific instructions provided. Pay attention to the flow of the story and identify the natural pauses, climaxes, and transitions. This analysis will serve as your roadmap for delivering a compelling performance.
Inject Life into the Words
Now comes the fun part — bringing the script to life with your voice. As you read through the lines, imagine yourself as the character or narrator in the story. Visualize the scene, the emotions, and the intended impact. Channel that energy and emotion into your delivery, creating an immersive experience for your listeners. Remember, it’s not just about reading the words, it’s about embodying the essence of the script.
Play with Delivery Techniques
Script interpretation gives you the opportunity to play with a variety of delivery techniques. Experiment with different pacing, emphasis on specific words or phrases, and variations in tone to enhance the overall impact of the script. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step outside your comfort zone. Sometimes, it’s those unexpected choices that truly make a voice-over performance memorable.
Practice, Practice, Practice
As with any skill, practice makes perfect. Take the time to practice your script interpretations before hitting that record button. Rehearse the lines, experiment with different approaches, and solicit feedback from trusted friends or mentors. Embrace constructive criticism as an opportunity for growth and refinement.
By mastering the art of script interpretation, you’ll elevate your voice over performances from good to exceptional. You’ll have the power to breathe life into words and transport listeners to a world of imagination and emotion.
Tip 3: Harness the Power of Breathing and Posture
Alright, let’s talk about two essential elements that can significantly impact your vocal performance: breathing and posture.
Breathe for Vocal Control
Take a deep breath — literally. Proper breathing is the foundation of vocal control and projection. Start by becoming aware of your breathing patterns. Are you breathing shallowly from your chest, or are you utilizing the power of your diaphragm?
To utilize the full potential of your voice, practice diaphragmatic breathing. Imagine filling your lungs from the bottom up, allowing your abdomen to expand as you inhale deeply. This technique provides more air and support for your voice, resulting in better projection, clarity, and overall vocal control.
Posture: Stand Tall, Perform Tall
Now, let’s straighten up and focus on your posture. Your posture not only affects your physical appearance but also influences your vocal performance. Stand tall, my friend, with your shoulders relaxed and your spine aligned. Avoid slouching or slumping, as it can restrict your diaphragm and hinder your vocal power.
Maintaining good posture opens up your chest cavity, allowing for unrestricted airflow and resonance. It also helps prevent strain and tension in your neck and shoulders, ensuring a more comfortable recording session.
Warm-up Exercises for Breathing and Posture
To warm up your breathing and posture muscles before recording, here are a few exercises you can try:
Belly Breaths: Lie on your back and place a hand on your abdomen. Inhale deeply, feeling your belly rise as you fill your lungs with air. Exhale slowly, allowing your abdomen to fall. Repeat this exercise, focusing on expanding your breath capacity.
Shoulder Rolls: Stand tall and roll your shoulders backward in a circular motion. This helps release tension in your upper body and promotes relaxation.
Spine Stretch: Sit upright on a chair, feet flat on the ground. Slowly tilt your head forward, rounding your spine, and reach for your toes. Hold for a few seconds, then slowly roll back up, stacking each vertebra until you’re sitting tall again. This exercise helps release tension and promotes a flexible spine.
Incorporating these breathing and posture practices into your daily routine will not only improve your voice-over recordings but also benefit your overall vocal health.
Tip 4: Create a Professional Recording Environment
If you want to achieve top-notch recordings that sound like they were crafted in a high-end studio, it’s time to focus on creating a professional recording environment. Let’s explore the key elements that will take your voice-over game to the next level.
Find the Perfect Recording Space
First and foremost, you need to find a suitable space for recording. Ideally, choose a small, quiet room where external noises can be minimized. Consider using a spare bedroom, a home office, or even a walk-in closet — the goal is to create a space that can be dedicated to recording without interruptions.
Soundproofing Is Your Friend
Soundproofing is the secret sauce that ensures clean and clear recordings. You don’t want external noises creeping into your recordings, ruining all your hard work. To minimize unwanted sounds, consider using acoustic foam panels or soundproofing curtains to absorb echoes and reduce ambient noise. Pay attention to sealing windows, doors, and any other potential sources of noise leakage.
Equipment Essentials
While you don’t need to break the bank on expensive gear, having a few essential items will significantly improve your recordings. Here’s what you’ll need:
Microphone: Invest in a good-quality condenser microphone that suits your voice and recording needs. Do your research, read reviews, and find one that fits your budget.
Pop Filter: A pop filter helps eliminate plosive sounds (such as “p” and “b” sounds) that can distort your recordings. It’s a simple yet effective tool for achieving clean and professional audio.
Headphones: Invest in a pair of closed-back headphones to monitor your recordings accurately and catch any imperfections or background noise.
Optimize the Recording Space: Once you have your equipment ready, it’s time to optimize your recording space. Here are a few tips:
Positioning: Set up your microphone on a stable surface and adjust its position to capture your voice clearly. Experiment with different microphone placements to find the sweet spot.
Reflection Filters: If your budget allows, consider using reflection filters or portable vocal booths to further enhance the sound quality. These tools help reduce reflections and improve vocal clarity.
Eliminate Background Noise: Turn off fans, air conditioners, and any other noisy appliances. Make sure your phone is on silent mode to avoid unexpected interruptions during recording sessions.
Remember, a well-optimized recording environment sets the stage for professional-grade voiceovers. Take the time to fine-tune your setup and create a space that allows your talent to shine.
Tip 5: Polish Your Recording with Editing and Sound Design
Now that you’ve captured your stellar voice-over performance, it’s time to talk about editing and sound design. This is where the magic truly happens and where you’ll transform your raw recordings into polished masterpieces that will captivate your audience.
Choose the Right Editing Software
To kick off your editing journey, you’ll need reliable editing software. There are plenty of options out there, from beginner-friendly tools to industry-standard software. Choose one that suits your needs and budget. Popular choices include Adobe Audition, Audacity, and GarageBand.
Fine-Tune Your Recordings
Once you’ve imported your recordings into your chosen editing software, it’s time to fine-tune them. Here are a few editing techniques to consider:
Trim and Clean: Trim any unnecessary silence or mistakes to tighten up your recordings. Use the waveform visualization to identify and remove background noise, clicks, or pops.
Adjust Levels: Ensure your voice is balanced and consistent throughout the recording. Adjust the volume levels to maintain a clear and even sound.
Smooth Transitions: Smooth out any abrupt transitions or breaths that may disrupt the flow. Use crossfades or gentle fades to create seamless transitions between sections.
Sound design is the icing on the cake that adds depth and richness to your voice-over recordings. Here are some techniques to consider:
Music and Sound Effects: If appropriate for your project, add background music or sound effects to enhance the overall atmosphere and emotional impact. Choose sounds that complement the tone and message of the script.
EQ and Compression: Use equalization (EQ) to shape the frequency balance of your voice and make it stand out in the mix. Compression can help even out the dynamics of your voice and give it a polished, professional sound.
Ambience and Reverb: Add subtle ambience or reverb to create a sense of space and immersion. Be careful not to overdo it, subtlety is key here.
Final Checks and Exporting
Before you hit that export button, give your edited recording a final listen. Check for any remaining errors, ensure the volume levels are appropriate, and make any necessary adjustments. When you’re satisfied, export your final recording in a high-quality format suitable for your intended use (e.g., WAV or MP3).
Editing and sound design are powerful tools that can elevate your voiceovers to new heights. Take the time to refine your recordings, experiment with different techniques, and let your creativity shine through.
Conclusion
