Some of my fondest childhood TV related memories included The Zone on YTV. specifically the era of hosts which included PJ Phil and his animatronic sidekick Snit. I took some creative liberties to make Snit a little more expressive since he was pretty much a TV set coated in purple bubble gum. PJ Phil and Snit really made the time between cartoons something to look forward to.

Along with being a writer, Shandi Mitchell is also a Canadian filmmaker. Don’t know if she was intentional or not, but her writing reminds me of Canadian police and medical dramas. It reminds me I should use my CBC Gem account more, and it reminds me to finally read The Tangled Garden by Richard Stursberg. I find the concept of supporting and championing Canadian media and television as part of my job, but I have a few issues with this. As someone from a Chinese Canadian family, with many older folks who had not had the chance to learn English as a second language, it has been vital to have access to media in Cantonese and Mandarin. That has meant that while I personally have seen a lot of Canadian television growing up, our family had to rely greatly on media content from Hong Kong and Mainland China. This means that Canadian media has a lot to do to attract audience members who do not speak English or French as their primary language. I recently signed a petition to save the multicultural programming at OMNI Television, which was sent to my local MP Michelle Rempel. I did not then really have a chance to reflect on my support of that petition but now I have. OMNI Television provides a choice for Canadian-produced multilingual programming that allows first-generation and multi-generation Canadians access to locally produced programming while engaging in the language spoken at home. It also contributes to increasing the diversity and innovation in Canadian media and television that can appeal to a larger global audience.
