a thing I really really enjoy about omori is that you can almost see sunny's conscience slowly growing in headspace. even just after sunny wakes up from that first scene and hears his moms voicemail about kel wanting to see him, you can see his guilt in his dream with spaceboy. like spaceboy literally says laying around won't heal a broken heart. but being with friends might help. sunny's realizing maybe his friends wanna see him. even if he doesn't think he deserves it. and he tries to erase the guilt around basil by erasing him, but stranger is the *embodiment* of that.

stranger is sunny realizing how much his friends were hurting because he left. aubrey demanding to know why he came back now, realizing what lied behind kel's cheery persona, realizing how depressed hero was, and basil begging him not to leave him again and seeing how absolutely torn up he was by the events...it's him realizing just how badly he messed up. stranger isn't the parts of basil he doesn't like. stranger is sunny's conscience. stranger is his love for his friends telling him, you hurt them. not how omori told him you hurt them. stranger tells him, they need you. they needed us. and we weren't there. I missed you, you left me. I wanted you back, and you didn't come.

stranger isn't the parts of basil sunny doesn't want to see. stranger is *his conscience.* and his conscience takes the form of basil because basil and his trauma are so deeply intertwined.
